Species discrimination of insects is an important aspect of ecology and biodiversity research. The traditional methods based on human visual experience and biochemical analysis cannot strike a balance between accuracy and timeliness. Morphological identification using computer vision and machine learning is expected to solve this problem, but image features have poor accuracy for very similar species and usually require complicated networks that are unfriendly to portable edge devices. In this work, we propose a fast and accurate species discrimination method of similar insects using hyperspectral features and lightweight machine learning algorithm. Feature regions selection, feature spectra selection and model quantification are used for the optimization of discriminating network. The experimental results of six similar butterfly species in the genus of Graphium show that, compared with morphological recognition with machine vision, our work achieves a higher accuracy of 92.36 ± 3.04% and a shorter inference time of 0.6 ms, with the tiny-size convolutional neural network deployed on a neural network chip. This study provides a rapid and high-accuracy species discrimination method for insects with high appearance similarity and paves the way for field discriminations using intelligent micro-spectrometer based on on-chip microstructure and artificial intelligence chip.

Abstract Solute carrier family 26 member 9 (SLC26A9) is a member of the Slc26a family of multifunctional anion transporters that functions as a Cl- channel in parietal cells during acid secretion. We explored the role of SLC26A9 in colorectal cancer (CRC) and its related mechanisms through clinical samples from CRC patients, CRC cell lines and mouse models. We observed that SLC26A9 was expressed at low levels in the cytoplasm of adjacent tissues, polyps and adenomas but was significantly increased in colorectal adenocarcinoma. Moreover, increased levels of SLC26A9 were associated with a high risk of disease and poor prognosis. In addition, downregulation of SLC26A9 in CRC cells induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis but inhibited cell proliferation and xenograft tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistic analysis revealed that SLC26A9 was colocalized with β-catenin in the nucleus of CRC cells. The translocation of these two proteins from the cytoplasm to the nucleus reflected the activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, and promoted the transcription of downstream target proteins, including CyclinD1, c-Myc and Snail, but inhibited the expression of cytochrome C (Cyt-c), cleaved Caspase9, cleaved Caspase3 and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF). CRC is accompanied by alteration of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers. Meanwhile, further studies showed that in SW48 cells, overexpressing SLC26A9 was cocultured with the β-catenin inhibitor XAV-939, β-catenin was downregulated, and EMT was reversed. Our study demonstrated SLC26A9 may be responsible for alterations in the proliferative ability and aggressive potential of CRC by regulating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a malignancy that is widely prevalent worldwide. Due to its unsatisfactory treatment outcome and extremely poor prognosis, many studies on the molecular mechanisms and pathological mechanisms of CRC have been published in recent years. The tumor microenvironment (TME) is an extremely important feature of tumorigenesis and one of the hallmarks of tumor development. Metabolic reprogramming is currently a hot topic in tumor research, and studies on this topic have provided important insights into CRC development. In particular, metabolic reprogramming in cancer causes changes in the composition of energy and nutrients in the TME. Furthermore, it can alter the complex crosstalk between immune cells and associated immune factors, such as associated macrophages and T cells, which play important immune roles in the TME, in turn affecting the immune escape of tumors by altering immune surveillance. In this review, we summarize several metabolism-related processes affecting the immune microenvironment of CRC tumors. Our results showed that the immune microenvironment is regulated by metabolic reprogramming and influences the development of CRC.

IntroductionPanax ginseng C. A. Mey. (Araliaceae; Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), a traditional plant commonly utilized in Eastern Asia, has demonstrated efficacy in treating neuro-damaging diseases and diabetes mellitus. However, its precise roles and mechanism in alleviating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) need further study. The objective of this study is to explore the pharmacological effects of ginseng extract and elucidate its potential mechanisms in protecting islets and promoting β-cell regeneration.MethodsThe T2DM mouse model was induced through streptozotocin combined with a high-fat diet. Two batches of mice were sacrificed on the 7th and 28th days following ginseng extract administration. Body weight, fasting blood glucose levels, and glucose tolerance were detected. Morphological changes in the pancreatic islets were examined via H & E staining. Levels of serum insulin, glucagon, GLP-1, and inflammatory factors were measured using ELISA. The ability of ginseng extract to promote pancreatic islet β-cell regeneration was evaluated through insulin & PCNA double immunofluorescence staining. Furthermore, the mechanism behind β-cells regeneration was explored through insulin & glucagon double immunofluorescence staining, accompanied by immunohistochemical staining and western blot analyses.Results and DiscussionThe present research revealed that ginseng extract alleviates symptoms of T2DM in mice, including decreased blood glucose levels and improved glucose tolerance. Serum levels of insulin, GLP-1, and IL-10 increased following the administration of ginseng extract, while levels of glucagon, TNF-α, and IL-1β decreased. Ginseng extract preserved normal islet morphology, increased nascent β-cell population, and inhibited inflammatory infiltration within the islets, moreover, it decreased α-cell proportion while increasing β-cell proportion. Mechanistically, ginseng extract might inhibit ARX and MAFB expressions, increase MAFA level to aid in α-cell to β-cell transformation, and activate AKT-FOXM1/cyclin D2 to enhance β-cell proliferation. Our study suggests that ginseng extract may be a promising therapy in treating T2DM, especially in those with islet injury.

Among the eight types of aroma and flavour characteristics of Chinese flue-cured tobacco (FCT), tobacco grown in Shandong is classified as having a honey-sweet and burnt aroma. To elucidate the key chemical components that determine the characteristics of the honey-sweet and burnt aroma styles of Shandong FCT, we qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated the smoke flavour quality and five categories of flavour-related chemical components (routine components, water-soluble sugars, free amino acids, Amadori compounds and key aroma-active compounds) in Shandong middle FCT leaves using sensory analysis and modern instrumental analysis techniques. The association between the chemical components and sensory quality was analysed. Our results showed that the total sugars, reducing sugars (fructose, glucose, and psicose), total sugar-nicotine ratio, proline-total amino acid ratio, sulphur-containing amino acid-total amino acid ratio and fructosyl-proline (Fru-Pro) were high in premium FCT leaves. The aroma-active compounds associated with the honey-sweet burnt flavour style of the Shandong Middle FCT included sweet-scented 2,3-pentanedione, 2,3-butanedione, butyrolactone, 2-furanmethanol, roasted-like 2-pentylfura, and green-like 1-penten-3-one. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis revealed that 29 aroma precursors were positively correlated with the sensory quality characteristics of Shandong FCT. The results of our study can provide guidance for the targeted improvement and precise regulation of the flavour-style characteristics of Shandong FCT.

Loading rate is usually considered as a significant factor affecting formability of AZ91 magnesium alloy structural components. Herein, uniaxial tensile tests are conducted on extruded-annealed AZ91 alloy under room temperature with strain rates ranging from 1 × 10−4 s−1 to 1 × 10−2 s−1. Mechanical properties, microstructure characteristics, and fracture morphologies tensioned at these different strain rates are investigated. Extruded-annealed AZ91 alloy exhibits a positive strain-rate dependence of strength and a negative strain-rate dependence of elongation. With strain rate increasing, strain rate sensitivity basically decreases while strain-hardening rate increases. At higher strain rate, the larger strength is mainly attributed to the more rapid accumulation of dislocation and the larger dislocation density, and the lower elongation is mostly owing to the more elevated level of inhomogeneous deformation related with dislocations accumulation. As strain rate increases, the area fraction of basal texture increases while that of prismatic and pyramid texture decreases in tensioned samples, which is associated with the dominant room-temperature deformation mode of basal-slip and twinning co-induced lattice rotation. With tension strain rate increasing, there are three kinds of fracture modes including ductile facture with more and deeper dimples at low strain rate, ductile-brittle facture with some dimples and cleavage planes at mediate strain rate and brittle facture with dominant cleavage planes at high strain rate.

We present COSBO-7, a strong millimeter source known for more than 16 yr that just revealed its near-to-mid-IR counterpart with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The precise pinpointing by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array on the exquisite NIRCam and MIRI images show that it is a background source gravitationally lensed by a single foreground galaxy, and the analysis of its spectral energy distribution by different tools is in favor of photometric redshift at z _ph > 7. Strikingly, our lens modeling based on the JWST data shows that it has a regular disk morphology in the source plane. The dusty region giving rise to the far-IR-to-millimeter emission seems to be confined to a limited region to one side of the disk and has a high dust temperature of >90 K. The galaxy is experiencing starburst both within and outside of this dusty region. After taking the lensing magnification of μ ≈ 2.5–3.6 into account, the intrinsic star formation rate is several hundred M _⊙ yr ^−1 both within the dusty region and across the more extended stellar disk, and the latter already has >10 ^10 M _⊙ of stars in place. If it is indeed at z > 7, COSBO-7 presents an extraordinary case that is against the common wisdom about galaxy formation in the early Universe; simply put, its existence poses a critical question to be answered: how could a massive disk galaxy come into being so early in the Universe and sustain its regular morphology in the middle of an enormous starburst?

Gastric cancer (GC) is a malignant tumor of the gastrointestinal tract with a high mortality rate worldwide, a low early detection rate and a poor prognosis. The rise of metabolomics has facilitated the early detection and treatment of GC. Metabolism in the GC tumor microenvironment (TME) mainly includes glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism and amino acid metabolism, which provide energy and nutrients for GC cell proliferation and migration. Abnormal tumor metabolism can influence tumor progression by regulating the functions of immune cells and immune molecules in the TME, thereby contributing to tumor immune escape. Thus, in this review, we summarize the impact of metabolism on the TME during GC progression. We also propose novel strategies to modulate antitumor immune responses by targeting metabolism.

When using traditional Euler deconvolution optimization strategies, it is difficult to distinguish between anomalies and their corresponding Euler tails (those solutions are often distributed outside the anomaly source, forming “tail”-shaped spurious solutions, i.e., misplaced Euler solutions, which must be removed or marked) with only the structural index. The nonparametric estimation method based on the normalized B-spline probability density (BSS) is used to separate the Euler solution clusters and mark different anomaly sources according to the similarity and density characteristics of the Euler solutions. For display purposes, the BSS needs to map the samples onto the estimation grid at the points where density will be estimated in order to obtain the probability density distribution. However, if the size of the samples or the estimation grid is too large, this process can lead to high levels of memory consumption and excessive computation times. To address this issue, a fast linear binning approximation algorithm is introduced in the BSS to speed up the computation process and save time. Subsequently, the sample data are quickly projected onto the estimation grid to facilitate the discrete convolution between the grid and the density function using a fast Fourier transform. A method involving multivariate B-spline probability density estimation based on the FFT (BSSFFT), in conjunction with fast linear binning appropriation, is proposed in this paper. The results of two random normal distributions show the correctness of the BSS and BSSFFT algorithms, which is verified via a comparison with the true probability density function (pdf) and Gaussian kernel smoothing estimation algorithms. Then, the Euler solutions of the two synthetic models are analyzed using the BSS and BSSFFT algorithms. The results are consistent with their theoretical values, which verify their correctness regarding Euler solutions. Finally, the BSSFFT is applied to Bishop 5X data, and the numerical results show that the comprehensive analysis of the 3D probability density distributions using the BSSFFT algorithm, derived from the Euler solution subset of x0,y0,z0, can effectively separate and locate adjacent anomaly sources, demonstrating strong adaptability.

Pollution source analysis is an effective method that can help chemical park managers accurately understand the characteristics and contributions of pollution sources in the park. However, as more receptor models are being used in this field, it has become difficult for managers to find the best interpretable and reasonable model among many source analysis models.Here, we present a case study of pollution source analysis in a southern chemical park using the D–S evidence theory approach to combine the source analysis results of different receptor models for comprehensive consideration. Receptor models were used to analyse the pollution sources via positive definite matrix decomposition, principal component analysis–multiple linear regression, and Unmix models.The results demonstrated that source analysis was greatly influenced by the uniqueness of pollutant characteristics and model receptor differences. Furthermore, incomparable analysis results and low fineness were observed. The D–S evidence theory model proposed in this study solved the above-mentioned problem to some extent and successfully extracted the four primary pollution sources in the study area, of which 45.73 % came from the metal processing industry (F1), whose primary pollutants were Cr, Ni, Zn, Cr(VI), and Cu, and 25.12 % came from the electronics manufacturing industry (F2), whose primary pollutants were Pb, Cr(VI), Cu, and Zn. 15.62 % of the contamination came from the production of chemical agents (F3), whose primary pollutant was TEHP, and 13.53 % came from the use of oil-containing auxiliary materials (F4), whose primary pollutant was TPH.The D–S evidence theory model used in this study provides a reference for the management of chemical parks.

High mobility group box protein B1 (HMGB1) belongs to the HMG family, is widely expressed in the nucleus of digestive mucosal epithelial cells, mesenchymal cells and immune cells, and binds to DNA to participate in genomic structural stability, mismatch repair and transcriptional regulation to maintain normal cellular activities. In the context of digestive inflammation and tumors, HMGB1 readily migrates into the extracellular matrix and binds to immune cell receptors to affect their function and differentiation, further promoting digestive tract tissue injury and tumor development. Notably, HMGB1 can also promote the antitumor immune response. Therefore, these seemingly opposing effects in tumors make targeted HMGB1 therapies important in digestive cancer. This review focuses on the role of HMGB1 in tumors and its effects on key pathways of digestive cancer and aims to provide new possibilities for targeted tumor therapy.

Abstract Diffuse gastric mucosal injury is a chronic injury with altered cell differentiation, including spasmolytic polypeptide expression metaplasia (SPEM) and intestinal metaplasia (IM), which are considered precancerous lesions of gastric cancer (GC). Previously, most studies have focused on how parietal cell loss causes SPEM through transdifferentiation of chief cells. In theory, alteration or loss of chief cells seems to be a secondary phenomenon due to initial partial cell loss. However, whether initial chief cell loss causes SPEM needs to be further investigated. Currently, increasing evidence shows that initial chief cell loss is sufficient to induce gastric mucosal injury, including SPEM and IM, and ultimately lead to GC. Therefore, we summarized the two main types of models that explain the development of gastric mucosal injury due to initial chief cell loss. We hope to provide a novel perspective for the prevention and treatment of diffuse gastric mucosal injury.

In Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), Automated Driving Systems (ADS), and Driver Assistance Systems (DAS), RGB camera sensors are extensively utilized for object detection, semantic segmentation, and object tracking. Despite their popularity due to low costs, RGB cameras exhibit weak robustness in complex environments, particularly underperforming in low-light conditions, which raises a significant concern. To address these challenges, multi-sensor fusion systems or specialized low-light cameras have been proposed, but their high costs render them unsuitable for widespread deployment. On the other hand, improvements in post-processing algorithms offer a more economical and effective solution. However, current research in low-light image enhancement still shows substantial gaps in detail enhancement on nighttime driving datasets and is characterized by high deployment costs, failing to achieve real-time inference and edge deployment. Therefore, this paper leverages the Swin Vision Transformer combined with a gamma transformation integrated U-Net for the decoupled enhancement of initial low-light inputs, proposing a deep learning enhancement network named Vehicle-based Efficient Low-light Image Enhancement (VELIE). VELIE achieves state-of-the-art performance on various driving datasets with a processing time of only 0.19 s, significantly enhancing high-dimensional environmental perception tasks in low-light conditions.

The Hutuo River Drinking Water Source Area is an important water source of Shijiazhuang (North China Plain). Knowing the characteristics of groundwater chemistry/quality is essential for the protection and management of water resources. However, there are few studies focused on the groundwater chemistry evolution over the drinking water area. In this study, total of 160 groundwater samples were collected in November 2021, and the spatial distribution of groundwater chemistry and related controlling factors were analyzed using hydrological and multivariate analysis. The entropy-weighted water quality index (EWQI) was introduced to assess the groundwater quality. The results show that the hydrogeochemical types of groundwater are Ca-HCO3 (78.1%), mixed Ca-Mg-Cl (20%), and Ca-Cl (1.9%) in the area. Graphical and binary diagrams indicate that groundwater hydrochemistry is mainly controlled by water–rock interaction (i.e., rock weathering, mineral dissolution, and ion exchange). Five principal components separated from the principal component analysis represent the rock–water interaction and agricultural return, redox environment, geogenic sources, the utilization of agricultural fertilizer, the weathering of aluminum silicates, and dissolution of carbonates, respectively. More than 70% of the samples are not recommended for irrigation due to the presence of high salt content in groundwater. EWQI assessment demonstrates that the quality of the groundwater is good. The outcomes of this study are significant for understanding the geochemical status of the groundwater in the Hutuo River Drinking Water Source Area, and helping policymakers to protect and manage the groundwater.

Background and objective: As a partial positive allosteric modulator of the gamma-aminobutyric acid A (GABAA) receptor, dimdazenil was used for the treatment of insomnia with the potential to alleviate associated side effects compared to full agonists. The objective of this trial is to assess the safety, tolerability, food effect and pharmacokinetics following single and multiple doses of dimdazenil in Chinese healthy subjects.Methods: In this phase 1 trial, 36 healthy subjects aged ≥18 years were assigned to receive a single dose of 1.5, 2.5, or 5 mg dimdazenil, with each dose cohort consisting of 12 subjects, and 14 subjects were assigned to receive a multiple 2.5 mg daily dose of dimdazenil for 5 days. Safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic characteristics were evaluated.Results: Of the 50 subjects enrolled and 49 completed the trial, the incidences of treatment-emergent adverse events (AEs) in the single-dose groups of 1.5, 2.5, and 5 mg were 16.7%, 58.3% and 66.7% respectively, while 61.5% in the multiple-dose group. There were no serious AEs, deaths, AEs leading to discontinuation or AEs of requiring clinical intervention in any treatment groups. The most treatment-emergent AEs were dizziness (n = 4, 8.2%), hyperuricemia (n = 2, 6.1%), upper respiratory tract infection (n = 2, 6.1%), diastolic blood pressure decreased (n = 2, 6.1%), blood TG increased (n = 2, 6.1%) and RBC urine positive (n = 2, 6.1%). All AEs were mild-to-moderate and transient, and no severe AEs were documented in any study phase. The PK profile of dimdazenil and its active metabolite Ro46-1927 was linear across 1.5–5 mg oral doses in humans. The median Tmax for dimdazenil was in the range of 0.5–1.5 h, and the apparent terminal t1/2z ranged from 3.50 to 4.32 h. Taking Dimdazenil with food may delay Tmax and decrease Cmax, without affecting the total exposure (AUC). No relevant accumulations of dimdazenil and Ro 46–1927 were observed in multiple-dose group.Conclusion: Dimdazenil was generally well tolerated in healthy Chinese subjects after single and 5 days-multiple dosing. The pharmacokinetic properties of dimdazenil are compatible with a drug for the treatment of insomnia.Clinical Trial Registration: chinadrugtrials.org.cn, identifier CTR20201978

Mapping crop distribution using satellite technology is an effective approach for gaining information about food production over broad, regional scales. However, crop classification in high altitude regions from satellite platforms remains challenging, due to the spatial heterogeneity caused by the complex planting patterns. Moreover, the frequent cloud cover makes it difficult to collect time-series imagery for these regions. Thus, this study used a mosaic of single images of Gaofen-6 data to map the crop distribution in high altitude regions of Xining City and Haidong City prefectures of Qinghai Province, China. To improve the accuracy of the crop classification, random forest-recursive feature elimination (RF-RFE) was used to determine an optimal feature subset from existing spectral, texture and topographic features. Then, a two-layer stacking generalization ensemble model, incorporating Random Forest, XGBoost and AdaBoost, was trained. The results reveal that the stacking algorithm outperformed the other single classifiers, with overall accuracy higher than 85% (87.89% for the optimal feature subset and 85.38% for the original spectral band subset). In addition, the user’s and producer’s accuracies for wheat, rape and maize field all exceeded 90%. Elevation was the variable with the highest importance score, illustrating its importance in crop classification of high altitude regions. Overall, the framework, combining RF-RFE and a stacking algorithm, can improve the accuracy of the crop classification in high altitude regions.

Nitrogen (N) deposition is an important environmental factor that can change soil chemical properties. It can also alter the characteristics of microbial communities. The incorporation of biochar into soils is considered a potential strategy to enhance carbon (C) storage in soil and modify the impacts of N deposition. However, the impacts of biochar on the microbial characteristics of soil after short-term N deposition in subtropical plantations remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of biochar application (0, 5, 10 t ha−1) on soil chemical traits and microbial characteristics (extracellular enzyme activities, microbial community and microbial biomass) in a Larix kaempferi plantation in Shennongjia, China, under N addition (0, 50, 100 kg N ha−1 yr−1) during two growing seasons. We found that simulated N deposition significant increased soil total nitrogen (TN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations, while heavy N deposition (100 kg N ha−1 yr−1) significant decreased soil microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) concentration and β-glucosidase (β-GC) activity. Biochar amendment significantly increased soil microbial biomass, TN and soil organic carbon (SOC) concentrations. Both N addition and biochar amendment significantly altered Ascomycota and Basidiomycota relative abundance, with biochar amendment increasing Ascomycota relative abundance and decreasing Mortierellomycota relative abundance under heavy N deposition. Fungal diversity showed a positive correlation to TN, TP and NO3−-N concentrations, but a negative correlation to MBN. Biochar addition inhibited the increase in soil NO3−-N concentration caused by high N addition in the plantation, and influenced the change in the composition of microbial community caused by N addition. Our piecewise structural equation model suggested that N addition affected MBN and fungal diversity directly or indirectly via its effects on soil enzyme activities and properties. In contrast, there were no significant direct or indirect effects on bacterial diversity among all factors. These results improve our understanding of the influence and mechanisms of N addition and biochar amendment on soil microbial characteristics in subtropical coniferous plantations in the short term, and can provide a valuable reference for predicting the future effects of N deposition on soils in this region’s plantation.

Climate change and air pollution are primarily caused by the combustion and utilization of fossil fuels. Both climate change and air pollution cause health problems. Based on the development of China, it is extremely important to explore the synergies of the energy transition, CO2 reduction, air pollution control, and health improvement under the target of carbon peaking before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060. This study introduces the policy evolution and research progress related to energy, climate change, and the environment in China and proposes a complete energy-climate-air- health mechanism framework. Based on the MESSAGE-GLOBIOM integrated assessment model, emission inventory and chemical transport model, and exposure-response function, a comprehensive assessment method of energy-climate-air- health synergies was established and applied to quantify the impacts of Chinese Energy Interconnection Carbon Neutrality (CEICN) scenario. The results demonstrate that, by 2060, the SO2, NOx and PM2.5 emissions are estimated to be reduced by 91 %, 85 %, and 90 % respectively compared to the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario. The direct health impacts brought by achieving the goal of carbon neutrality will drive the proactive implementation of more emission reduction measures and bring greater benefits to human health.

Hydrogel electrolytes, which feature intriguing characteristics of being soft and wet, accompanied with high solubility of zinc salts, are especially advantageous for fabricating flexible Zn-based batteries. Furthermore, the abundant and tunable chemistries of hydrogels offer opportunities to bestow novel affiliated functionalities, such as super toughness, extreme temperature tolerance, stimuli-responsive properties, and self-healing capability, by engineering polymer chains and chemical structures to fabricate flexible batteries with unprecedentedly scintillating functions. Herein, the design principles of functional hydrogel electrolytes including polymer chemistry, synthesis methods, characterisation and versatility demonstration for flexible Zn-based batteries are comprehensively reviewed. Relevant challenges and perspectives are also analysed and discussed.

After the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals were proposed, different institutions and scholars carried out research on China’s medium- and long-term mitigation pathways. Through the literature review of China’s research on carbon neutrality, this paper finds that the zero-carbon energy transition is the key to achieving carbon neutrality. The main driving factors of reducing energy-related carbon emissions include the cleanliness of primary and secondary energy supply systems, the electrification of energy consumption and the development of hydrogen energy, energy efficiency improvement, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and negative emissions. Furthermore, based on the literature, this paper conducts a quantitative comparative analysis, and selects key indicators for comparative analysis and summary from seven dimensions, including economic and social development, carbon emission pathways, primary energy consumption, final energy consumption, final hydrogen energy consumption, electricity demand and supply, and installed capacity and structure of power generation. Main conclusions are as follows: (i) In terms of carbon emission pathways, the institutions generally believed that China will peak carbon emissions around 2028 and achieve carbon neutrality between 2050 and 2060. Achieving net-zero or near-zero emissions first in the power sector is the key to carbon neutrality across the society; (ii) In terms of energy supply, it is a consensus to increase the proportion of clean energy and reduce carbon emissions from the source. The proportion of clean energy in primary energy will increase to more than 85%, and the proportion of clean energy power generation and installed capacity will reach more than 90%; (iii) In terms of energy use, electricity will become the core of final energy consumption in the future. The predicted electricity consumption across the society will range 14.3–18.4[Formula: see text]PWh, and the predicted electrification rate will exceed 65%.

Gas extraction is an important way to solve coal mine gas in China. At present, the development of new and more efficient gas sealing materials is an urgent problem in China's coal mining industry. In order to improve the gas extraction efficiency and promote the development and utilization of coalbed methane, we developed a new inorganic slow setting material which used bentonite as main material. We added two kinds of organic modified materials and two kinds of inorganic modified materials to optimize the sealing performance, and analyzed the viscosity, sealing and particle size changes after modification. The rheological properties and diffusion properties of sealing materials was studied. Meanwhile, field experiments were carried out to verify that it has more efficient sealing performance than traditional cement materials and could improves the efficiency of gas drainage and reduces mine gas disaster accidents.

The pelleted TMR pulverized the grass during processing, which may result in more solid attached microorganisms in the filtered rumen fluid. The objective of this study was evaluating the necessity of distinguishing physical phases of rumen contents for analysis of prokaryotes communities in rumen of lambs fed pelleted TMR, considering the dissimilarity of diversity and community of bacteria and archaea between fluid and mixed rumen contents. The yield of microbial DNA, bacterial diversity, abundances of fibrolytic bacteria of phylum Fibrobacterota and Spirochaetota, as well as genus Ruminococcus, Lachnospiraceae_NK3A20, Fibrobacter, and F082, and abundance of archaeal Methanimicrococcus in rumen fluid were lower than those in mixed phase of rumen contents (p ≤ 0.05). In conclusion, it is necessary to consider rumen content physical phases when studying the prokaryotic community in rumen of lambs fed pelleted TMR.

The gastric mucosal immune system is a unique immune organ independent of systemic immunity that not only maintains nutrient absorption but also plays a role in resisting the external environment. Gastric mucosal immune disorder leads to a series of gastric mucosal diseases, including autoimmune gastritis (AIG)-related diseases, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-induced diseases, and various types of gastric cancer (GC). Therefore, understanding the role of gastric mucosal immune homeostasis in gastric mucosal protection and the relationship between mucosal immunity and gastric mucosal diseases is very important. This review focuses on the protective effect of gastric mucosal immune homeostasis on the gastric mucosa, as well as multiple gastric mucosal diseases caused by gastric immune disorders. We hope to offer new prospects for the prevention and treatment of gastric mucosal diseases.

Grain starch has a faster rate of rumen fermentation than straw fiber and causes a rapid increase in ruminal molecular hydrogen (H2) partial pressure, which may promote other H2 sinks to compete H2 away from methanogenesis. The study was designed to investigate the effects of increasing ratios of grain starch to straw fiber on hydrogen allocation and methanogenesis through in vitro ruminal batch incubation. Corn grain and corn straw were employed as starch and fiber source respectively. Seven treatments were the ratios of corn grain to corn straw (RGS) being 0:6, 1:5, 2:4, 3:3, 4:2, 5:1, and 6:0. Elevating RGS increased dry matter (DM) degradation and decreased methane (CH4) and hydrogen gas (gH2) production relative to DM degraded. Elevating RGS increased volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration, propionate molar percentage and microbial protein (MCP) concentration, decreased acetate molar percentage, acetate to propionate ratio and estimated net metabolic hydrogen ([H]) production relative to DM degraded. Elevating RGS decreased the molar percentage of [H] utilized for CH4 and gH2 production. In summary, increasing ratios of grain starch to straw fiber altered rumen fermentation pathway from acetate to propionate production, reduced the efficiency of [H] production with the enhancement of MCP synthesis, and led to a reduction in the efficiency of CH4 and gH2 production.

In the context of rural development and transformation, it is crucial to identify the impact of rural multifunctionality on non-point source (NPS) pollution. This study applies the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), geographical detector, and principal component analysis in Liyang, a typical hilly subbasin in China, in order to assess the rural multifunctional development that influences the spatial differentiation of NPS pollution and detect the interactive effects of rural multifunctionality. The R2 and NSE demonstrated that the calibrated SWAT model successfully simulated NPS pollution in Liyang. The village scale was identified as the optimal research scale for examining the rural multifunctional development on NPS pollution distribution. The rural multifunctional indicators, such as the proportion of vegetable farming, sowing area, and grain farming, would influence NPS distribution. The number of family farming cooperatives, the area of pond farming, and the nature reserves area were also significant. The rural multifunctionality in Liyang could be classified into five categories: grain production, mixed agriculture, ecological conservation, leisure tourism, and industry and business function. The superposition of rural multifunctionality has a strengthening effect on NPS pollution, especially when the ecological conservation function is combined with the grain production or modern agriculture function. The study could provide NPS pollution control strategies for policymaking in rural multifunctional development.

Iron humic acid complex (Fe/HA) was selected as the anode material for its good redox activity,and the effect of Fe/HA modified anode on the power generation and nitrate degradation performance of MFC was investigated.Fe/HA modified anode was prepared by electrodeposition method.The surface morphology and active functional groups of the prepared anode were measured by scanning electron microscopy and flourier transform infrared spectroscopy;cyclic voltammetry curve,tafel curve,and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy curve were used to investigate the electrochemical performance of Fe/HA modified anode;and the performance of MFC was investigated with the synthetic nitrate wastewater.Results showed that Fe/HA modified anode has a loose cluster structure and redox-active functional groups;compared with the control anode,the charge transfer amount,exchange current density and charge transfer impedance of the Fe/HA modified anode improved by 75.82%,14.95% and 17.60%;compared with the control anode MFC,the maximum average output voltage and denitrification efficiency of Fe/HA modified anode MFC were increased by 16.52% and 6.47%.The Fe/HA modified anode has effectively increased the number of redox-active functional groups and the area of microbial attachment on the anode surface,thereby improving the electron transfer efficiency and further achieving the enhancement of the MFC power generation and nitrogen removal efficiency.This work provides theoretical basis for the development of metal humic acid complex anodes and their applications in MFC wastewater treatment field.

Abstract As one of the key technologies of electromagnetic spectrum operations, radar waveform recognition is an important basis for judging the threat degree of enemy’s weapons. At present, it is difficult to recognize the waveform at low signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR), and the theoretical simulation is used in most research studies, which leads to the problem that the engineering practicality of the algorithm is poor. In this paper, a two‐stream convolutional network radar waveform recognition (TCNRWR) algorithm that fuses the original time–frequency image and the continuous frames autocorrelation time–frequency image is proposed, and an experimental platform is built by using software defined radio technology. Compared with traditional theoretical simulations, this paper focusses on the influence of spatial background interference and signal incompleteness on the recognition of intra‐pulse signals, and proposes an automatic removal method of invalid signal in the time–frequency domain. In order to further improve the recognition rate at low SNR, a deeper feature of short‐time autocorrelation flow is excavated, and a two‐stream time–frequency images fusion convolutional network (TTIFCNet) is constructed. The network effectively fuses the pre‐classification results of the two streams through Softmax layer and different weights. Finally, the hardware platform HackRF is used to realize the communication and processing of signals in real space, which proves the effectiveness of the TCNRWR algorithm.

Abstract Tumor microenvironment (TME), characterized by high glutathione (GSH), high hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and acidic pH levels, is favorable for the growth, invasion and metastasis of cancer cells. Taking advantage of the specific characteristics of tumors, TME-responsive GCBD NPs are designed to deliver nanoscale coordination polymers (NCPs, GA-Cu) and chemotherapy drugs (doxorubicin, DOX) based on bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanocarriers into cancer cells for combined chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and chemotherapy. In an acidic environment, GCBD NPs could release approximately 90% copper ions, which can not only consume overexpressed GSH to modulate the TME but can also react with endogenous H2O2 in a Fenton-like reaction to achieve the CDT effect. Meanwhile, the released DOX could enter the nucleus of tumor cells and affect their proliferation to achieve efficient chemotherapy. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that GCBD NPs had good biosafety and could effectively inhibit the growth of cancer cells. GCBD NPs are promising as a biocompatible nanoplatform to exploit TME characteristics for combined chemo and chemodynamic therapy, providing a novel strategy to eradicate tumors with high efficiency and specificity. Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new pandemic the entire world is facing since December of 2019. Several risk factors are identified in developing severe disease and one of which is preexisting type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin is known to have host-directed anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. However, whether these effects offer lower mortality remains unclear. In this retrospective study, we aim to address whether metformin use prior to admission decreases mortality in patients with COVID-19 and pre-existing type 2 diabetes mellitus. A total of 1356 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and pre-existing type 2 diabetes mellitus was analyzed by multivariable regression. Covariates that potentially confound the association were further adjusted using propensity score matching or inverse probability of treatment weighting. We found that metformin therapy prior to admission in patients with COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes mellitus was significantly associated with less primary outcome events including in-hospital mortality and hospice care enrollment with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.25 (95% CI 0.06–0.74) and less in-hospital length of stay, compared to the non-metformin group. Our results provide supporting evidence that metformin may confer increased survival in patients with COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with metformin prior to hospitalization.

Abstract A new concentrated ternary salt ether‐based electrolyte enables stable cycling of lithium metal battery (LMB) cells with high‐mass‐loading (13.8 mg cm−2, 2.5 mAh cm−2) NMC622 (LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2) cathodes and 50 μm Li anodes. Termed “CETHER‐3,” this electrolyte is based on LiTFSI, LiDFOB, and LiBF4 with 5 vol% fluorinated ethylene carbonate in 1,2‐dimethoxyethane. Commercial carbonate and state‐of‐the‐art binary salt ether electrolytes were also tested as baselines. With CETHER‐3, the electrochemical performance of the full‐cell battery is among the most favorably reported in terms of high‐voltage cycling stability. For example, LiNixMnyCo1–x–yO2 (NMC)‐Li metal cells retain 80% capacity at 430 cycles with a 4.4 V cut‐off and 83% capacity at 100 cycles with a 4.5 V cut‐off (charge at C/5, discharge at C/2). According to simulation by density functional theory and molecular dynamics, this favorable performance is an outcome of enhanced coordination between Li+ and the solvent/salt molecules. Combining advanced microscopy (high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy) and surface science (X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time‐of‐fight secondary ion mass spectroscopy, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy), it is demonstrated that a thinner and more stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) are formed. The CEI is rich in lithium sulfide (Li2SO3), while the SEI is rich in Li3N and LiF. During cycling, the CEI/SEI suppresses both the deleterious transformation of the cathode R‐3m layered near‐surface structure into disordered rock salt and the growth of lithium metal dendrites.

ABSTRACT The soil microbiome is a driver of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in terrestrial ecosystems. Identifying the core microbiome of N2O emissions and its temperature sensitivity from trillions of soil microorganisms is a great challenge and is essential to improving the predictability of soil-climate feedback related to increasing temperature. Here, the integrated soil microbiome covering archaeal, bacterial, fungal, algal, and microfaunal communities was studied to disengage the potential linkage with its N2O emissions and its temperature sensitivity in paddy fields by hunting for core species pairs. The results showed that between-group interactions of core bacterial and archaeal members and the within-group interactions of core bacterial members jointly contributed to the N2O emissions and its temperature sensitivity. The contribution of between-group interactions (32 to 33%) was greater than that of within groups (10 to 18%). These results suggested that N2O emissions and their fluctuations related to climate warming are affected by the within- and between-group interactions of the soil microbiome. Our results help advance the knowledge on the importance of microbial keystone species and network associations in controlling N2O production and their responses to increasing temperature. We report the results of James Webb Space Telescope/NIRCam observations of 19 (sub)millimeter sources detected by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The accurate ALMA positions allowed unambiguous identifications of their NIRCam counterparts. Taking gravitational lensing into account, these represent 16 distinct galaxies in three fields and constitute the largest sample of its kind to date. The counterparts’ spectral energy distributions cover from rest-frame ultraviolet to near-IR and provide photometric redshifts (1 < z < 4.5) and stellar masses ( M _* > 10 ^10.5 M _⊙ ), which are similar to submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) studied previously. However, our sample is fainter in (sub)millimeter than the classic SMG samples are, and our sources exhibit a wider range of properties. They have dust-embedded star formation rates as low as 10 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , and the sources populate both the star-forming main sequence and the quiescent categories. The deep NIRCam data allow us to study the rest-frame near-IR morphologies. Excluding two multiply imaged systems and one quasar, the majority of the remaining sources are disk-like and show either little or no disturbance. This suggests that secular growth is a potential route for the assembly of high-mass disk galaxies. While a few objects have large disks, the majority have small disks (median half-mass radius of 1.6 kpc). At this time, it is unclear whether this is due to the prevalence of small disks at these redshifts or some unknown selection effects of deep ALMA observations. A larger sample of ALMA sources with NIRCam observations will be able to address this question.

The recent searches for z > 11 galaxies using the James Webb Space Telescope have resulted in an unexpectedly high number of candidate objects, which imply at least 1 order of magnitude higher number density of z > 11 galaxies than the previously favored predictions. A question has risen whether there are some new types of contaminants among these candidates. The candidate sample of Yan et al., totaling 87 dropouts, is the largest one, and we notice that a number of these candidates are pointlike. We hypothesize that the point-source dropouts could be supernovae at high redshifts. Further investigation shows that most of their spectral energy distributions indeed can be explained by supernovae at various redshifts from z ∼ 1 to 15, which lends support to this hypothesis. Attributing such point-source dropouts to supernova contamination cannot eliminate the tension, however, because they only account for ∼10% of the Yan et al. sample. On the other hand, the discovery of “contaminant” supernovae at z > 3 will have a series of important implications. Ironically, the existence of supernovae at z > 10 would still imply that the previously favored picture of early galaxy formation severely underestimates the global star formation rate density such redshifts. Multiple-epoch JWST imaging will be the simplest and yet the most efficient way to further test this hypothesis.

BackgroundCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new pandemic that the entire world is facing since December of 2019. Increasing evidence has shown that metformin is linked to favorable outcomes in patients with COVID-19. The aim of this study was to address whether outpatient or inpatient metformin therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with low in-hospital mortality in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.MethodsWe searched studies published in PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library up to November 1, 2022. Raw event data extracted from individual study were pooled using the Mantel-Haenszel approach. Odds ratio (OR) or hazard ratio (HR) adjusted for covariates that potentially confound the association using multivariable regression or propensity score matching was pooled by the inverse-variance method. Random effect models were applied for meta-analysis due to variance among studies.ResultsTwenty-two retrospective observational studies were selected. The pooled unadjusted OR for outpatient metformin therapy and in-hospital mortality was 0.48 (95% CI, 0.37-0.62) and the pooled OR adjusted with multivariable regression or propensity score matching was 0.71 (95% CI, 0.50-0.99). The pooled unadjusted OR for inpatient metformin therapy and in-hospital mortality was 0.18 (95% CI, 0.10-0.31), whereas the pooled adjusted HR was 1.10 (95% CI, 0.38-3.15).ConclusionsOur results suggest that there is a significant association between the reduction of in-hospital mortality and outpatient metformin therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

The effects of dandelion addition (DA) on the physiochemical properties, antioxidant activity, inhibitory activity against xanthine oxidase (XOD) and flavor of craft beer were investigated. It was found that DA changed the pH value, total acid content, thiobarbituric-acid-value, sugar content and color of beer, and increased the contents of total polyphenols and flavonoids and thus the antioxidant activity of beer. HPLC analysis showed that DA provided beer with chlorogenic, caffeic, ferulic, and chicoric acid, contributing to the inhibition activity against XOD that is a key enzyme in uric acid production. GC-MS analysis showed that 3-methyl-1-butanol, isopentyl acetate and ethyl caprylate were main aroma components of all samples. Although DA introduced the special aroma component of azulene, it did not significantly affect the appearance, bubble, aroma and taste evaluation of beer. Conclusively, DA potentially improved the beer properties of antioxidant and inhibition of uric acid production without changing its sensory characteristics.

Contamination flashover of insulators is one of the main threats to the safety of power systems, and regular cleaning of insulator surface pollution is an effective solution to this problem. In this paper, the laser cleaning of ceramic insulators is studied via simulations and experiments. The adhesion between a contamination layer and an insulator surface is estimated. A laser cleaning model for contaminated insulators is established, and a numerical analysis of the thermal stress field distribution characteristics of laser cleaning is carried out. Various factors that affect the thermal stress field distribution, including the laser power, laser scanning speed and thickness of the contamination layer, are also analysed. The optimal cleaning parameters for the best performance of laser cleaning are obtained through simulation and experiments. The result shows if the equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) is 0.05 mg/cm2, and the nonsoluble deposit density (NSDD) is 0.25 mg/cm2, the best cleaning effect could be achieved when the laser power is 100 W and the scanning speed reached 6000 mm/s.

Significant interest in the stoichiometric and off-stoichiometric Fe2MnGa alloys is based on their complex phase transition behavior and potential application. In this study, temperature- and magnetic-field-induced phase transformations in the Fe41.5Mn28Ga30.5 magnetic shape memory alloy were investigated by in situ synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction and in situ neutron diffraction techniques. It was found that incomplete phase transformation and phase coexistence behavior are always observed while applying and removing fields in Fe41.5Mn28Ga30.5. Typically, even at 4 K and under 0 T, or increasing the magnetic field to 11 T at 250 K, it can be directly detected that the martensite and austenite are in competition, making the phase transition incomplete. TEM observations at 300 K and 150 K indicate that the anti-phase boundaries and B2 precipitates may lead to field-induced incomplete phase transformation behavior collectively. The present study may enrich the understanding of field-induced martensitic transformation in the Fe-Mn-Ga magnetic shape memory alloys.

BackgroundSeveral studies have revealed a positive correlation between a Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This meta-analysis was conducted to explore further the relationship between HP infection and NAFLD in the Asian and non-Asian populations.MethodsRelevant studies published from inception to July 22, 2021, in the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane library, and Web of Science were comprehensively searched. The odds ratio (OR) and hazard ratio (HR) with a 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were pooled by the random-effects model or fixed-effects model. Additionally, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed. The funnel plot and the Egger test were used to estimate publication bias.ResultsThis meta-analysis included 25 studies involving 107,306 participants. Positive associations between HP infection and NAFLD were found both for the Asian (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.13–1.49, P < 0.01; I2 = 94.30%, P < 0.01) and non-Asian populations (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.04–1.94, P = 0.03; I2 = 44.90%, P = 0.09). Moreover, similar results were observed in the Asian female group (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.17–1.46, P < 0.01; I2 = 46.30%, P = 0.07) but not for the Asian male group. Subgroup analyses for the Asian population showed that there were differences in the association among NAFLD diagnosis methods (P < 0.01) and the study design (P < 0.01). However, subgroup and sensitivity analyses results showed that the association for the non-Asian population was not stable enough.ConclusionsThe data obtained in this systematic review and meta-analysis suggested that an HP infection was associated with an increased risk of NAFLD for Asian and non-Asian populations. However, the association was not found for Asian males. Abstract Modulation of endothelial cell behavior and phenotype by hemodynamic forces involves many signaling components, including cell surface receptors, intracellular signaling intermediaries, transcription factors, and epigenetic elements. Many of the signaling mechanisms that underlie mechanotransduction by endothelial cells are inadequately defined. Here we sought to better understand how β‐arrestins, intracellular proteins that regulate agonist‐mediated desensitization and integration of signaling by transmembrane receptors, may be involved in the endothelial cell response to shear stress. We performed both in vitro studies with primary endothelial cells subjected to β‐arrestin knockdown, and in vivo studies using mice with endothelial specific deletion of β‐arrestin 1 and β‐arrestin 2. We found that β‐arrestins are localized to primary cilia in endothelial cells, which are present in subpopulations of endothelial cells in relatively low shear states. Recruitment of β‐arrestins to cilia involved its interaction with IFT81, a component of the flagellar transport protein complex in the cilia. β‐arrestin knockdown led to marked reduction in shear stress response, including induction of NOS3 expression. Within the cilia, β‐arrestins were found to associate with the type II bone morphogenetic protein receptor (BMPR‐II), whose disruption similarly led to an impaired endothelial shear response. β‐arrestins also regulated Smad transcription factor phosphorylation by BMPR‐II. Mice with endothelial specific deletion of β‐arrestin 1 and β‐arrestin 2 were found to have impaired retinal angiogenesis. In conclusion, we have identified a novel role for endothelial β‐arrestins as key transducers of ciliary mechanotransduction that play a central role in shear signaling by BMPR‐II and contribute to vascular development.

Alarmins exist outside cells and are early warning signals to the immune system; as such, alarmin receptors are widely distributed on various immune cells. Alarmins, proinflammatory molecular patterns associated with tissue damage, are usually released into the extracellular space, where they induce immune responses and participate in the damage and repair processes of mucosal diseases.In the stomach, gastric alarmin release has been shown to be involved in gastric mucosal inflammation, antibacterial defense, adaptive immunity, and wound healing; moreover, this release causes damage and results in the development of gastric mucosal diseases, including various types of gastritis, ulcers, and gastric cancer. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the role of alarmins in gastric mucosal diseases. This review focuses on the contribution of alarmins, including IL33, HMGB1, defensins and cathelicidins, to the gastric mucosal barrier and their role in gastric mucosal diseases. Here, we offer a new perspective on the prevention and treatment of gastric mucosal diseases.

Brittle Culm 15 (BC15) gene encodes a membrane-associated chitinase-like protein that participates in cellulose synthesis, and BC15 gene mutation affects cell wall composition in plant, such as cellulose or hemicellulose. The present study was designed to investigate the changes of carbohydrates composition in bc15 mutant straw, and the resulting consequence on rumen fermentation, methanogenesis, and microbial populations (qPCR) during in vitro ruminal fermentation process. Two substrates, bc15 mutant and wild-type (WT) rice straws, were selected for in vitro rumen batch culture. The first experiment was designed to investigate the kinetics of total gas and CH4 production through 48-h in vitro ruminal fermentation, while the second experiment selected incubation time of 12 and 48 h to represent the early and late stage of in vitro ruminal incubation, respectively, and then investigated changes in biodegradation, fermentation end products, and selected representative microbial populations. The bc15 mutant straw had lower contents of cellulose, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF), and higher contents of water-soluble carbohydrates, neutral detergent solubles (NDS) and monosaccharides. The bc15 mutant straw exhibited a distinct kinetics of 48-h total gas and CH4 production with faster increases in early incubation when compared with WT straw. The bc15 mutant straw had higher DM degradation, NDF degradation and total volatile fatty acid concentration at 12 h of incubation, and lower NDF degradation and CH4 production at 48 h of incubation, together with lower acetate to propionate ratio and ADF degradation and higher butyrate molar percentage and NDS degradation at both incubation times. Furthermore, the bc15 mutant straw resulted in greater 16S gene copies of F. succinogenes, with lower 18S gene copies of fungi at both incubation times. These results indicated that the BC15 gene mutation decreased fibrosis of cell wall of rice straw, enhanced degradation at the early stage of rumen fermentation, and shifts fermentation pattern from acetate to propionate and butyrate production, leading to the decreased volume and fractional rate of CH4 production. However, BC15 gene mutation may enhance hardenability of cell wall structure of rice straw, which is more resistant for microbial colonization with decreased fiber degradation. Thus, this study modified rice straw by manipulating a cell wall biosynthesis gene and provides a potential strategy to alter degradation and CH4 production during in vitro ruminal fermentation process.

This study aimed to explore the effects of early feeding strategies on the growth and rumen development of lambs from pre-weaning to the transition to fattening diets. Ninety-six newborn, male lambs with similar body weights were randomly assigned to three treatments: fed starter at 42 days old + weaned at 56 days old (Ctrl, n = 36), fed starter at 7 days old + weaned at 56 days old (ES, n = 36), and fed starter at 7 days old + weaned at 28 days old (ES + EW, n = 24). The fattening diets of all lambs were gradually replaced from 60 to 70 days of age. Six randomly selected lambs from each treatment were slaughtered at 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, and 84 days of age. The results showed that the richness and diversity of rumen microbiota of lambs in the Ctrl group were distinct from those of lambs in the other groups at 42 days of age. Moreover, transcriptome analysis revealed 407, 219, and 1,211 unique differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the rumen tissue of ES vs. Ctrl, ES vs. ES + EW, and ES + EW vs. Ctrl groups, respectively, at 42 days of age. Different early feeding strategies resulted in differences in ruminal anatomy, morphology, and fermentation in lambs from 42 to 84 days of age (P < 0.05). Lambs in the ES + EW group had a higher average starter diet intake than those in the other groups (P < 0.05) from 28 to 56 days of age, which affected their growth performance. After 42 days of age, the body and carcass weights of lambs in the ES and ES + EW groups were higher than those in the Ctrl group (P < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that feeding lambs with a starter diet at 7 days of age and weaning them at 28 days of age can promote rumen development and improve growth performance, and this advantage persists for up to 2 weeks after transition to the fattening diet.

In this paper, partially coherent radially polarized (RP) Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) rotationally symmetrical power-exponent phase vortex (RSPEPV) beams with the LG-correlated Schell-model (LGSM) were introduced. The statistical properties of the tightly focused beams, including intensity distribution, degrees of polarization and coherence, and Stokes vector, were studied based on vectorial Richards-Wolf diffraction integral theory. Moreover, when the distance between focal plane and the observation plane z = 0, the relationships between the tight-focusing properties of RP-LG-RSPEPV beams with LGSM and the order of LGSM p’, topological charges l, power exponent n, spatial correlation δ, and radial index p were investigated. The results show that by changing the order of LGSM, topological charge, power exponent, spatial correlation length, and radial index, the focal spot distribution of various shapes can be obtained. This work provides ideas for the application of partially coherent beams in particle capture and optical tweezers.

This paper studies the spatial distribution characteristics and controlling factors of groundwater chemistry in the Chahannur Basin. One hundred and seventy shallow groundwater samples (50 m shallow) are collected, and seven ions, pH, TDS, TH, iron, manganese, COD, barium and other indicators, are detected. Piper triplex graph, Gibbs model, ion ratio, analysis of variance and Kriging interpolation are used to carry out the research. The results show that bicarbonate water is the main water chemical type in the Chahannur Basin, in which bicarbonate water accounts for 65.23%, chloride water accounts for 15.15% and sulfate water accounts for 19.62%. Bicarbonate water is mainly distributed in the mountainous areas in the north and south of the basin, and the main controlling factor is rock weathering. Sulfate-type water is mainly distributed in the lower reaches of the northern mountains of the basin, and the main controlling factors are rock weathering and evaporation concentration. The chloride water is mainly distributed in the Chahannur Lake area and the shallow groundwater buried area in the central region of the basin. The main controlling factors are evaporation concentration and human influence. Na+ is mainly derived from atmospheric precipitation and rock salt leaching, Ca2+ and Mg2+ are mainly derived from carbonate minerals leaching, and silicate minerals leaching is less. The pH of groundwater in the basin ranges from 6.3 to 9.18, with an average value of 7.50. The TDS in the basin ranges from 227 to 22,700 mg/L, with an average of 1661 mg/L. Iron in the catchment ranges from 0.01 to 15.343 mg/L, with a mean of 0.837 mg/L. The manganese content in the basin ranges from 0.005 to 3.802 mg/L, with an average value of 0.254 mg/L. COD in the basin ranges from 0.71–32.72 mg/L, with an average value of 3.49 mg/L. Barium in the basin ranges from 0.005 to 0.312 mg/L, with an average of 0.075 mg/L. The research results provide basic scientific data support for groundwater hydrochemistry research in the Chahannur Basin and show that the types of water chemistry in the study area are complex and diverse, and although the distribution is still controlled by terrain and geological conditions, the area affected by human activities accounts for a high proportion, so attention should be paid to the impact of human activities on groundwater in this area.

Although China possesses a large number of islands, knowledge of their overall ecological condition is limited on a national scale. Accordingly, this study developed a comprehensive and quantitative island ecosystem assessment framework that incorporates environmental quality, biological structure, and landscape patterns. The framework was applied to 42 typical, representative islands within China’s coastal regions, including different climatic zones, area sizes, populations, and substratum lithologies. Results showed that the value range of the comprehensive index of island ecosystem condition (CIisland) was significant (from 52.33 to 89.53, 71.72 average), and 85.4% of islands scored either “high” or “good,” indicative of their exceptional condition. However, conditions varied among different island components, indicating different challenges. Environmental quality index (Ienv) values ranged from 60.70 to 94.80 (79.72 average), where primary threats were seawater nutrient pollution, petroleum, and marine organism metal contamination. Biological structure index (Ibio) values ranged from 43.50 to 89.40 (66.10 average), where primary threats were vegetation destruction and a reduction in marine biodiversity within intertidal and subtidal zones. Landscape pattern index (Iland) values varied significantly (from 6 to 100, 72.36 average), where a key characteristic of highly developed islands was low natural landscape (vegetation) coverage. Conditions also varied among island climate zones, lithologies, area sizes, and levels of human habitation. Additionally, island ecosystem conditions were influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors as well as area size, population, and GDP. Although distance to the mainland significantly correlated to (Ibio), and (CIisland), these parameters did not significantly correlate to (Ienv), which might be explained by that environmental quality was generally conditional on large-scale environments. This assessment is intended to provide a holistic perspective on island conditions in China while identifying key challenges and associated driving factors, which will greatly aid in establishing island-specific sustainable management practices.

Gastric mucosal injuries include focal and diffused injuries, which do and do not change the cell differentiation pattern. Parietal cells loss is related to the occurrence of gastric mucosal diffused injury, with two phenotypes of spasmolytic polypeptide-expressing metaplasia and neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia, which is the basis of gastric cancer and gastric neuroendocrine tumor respectively. Multiple ion channels and transporters are located and expressed in the parietal cells, which is not only regulate the gastric acid-base homeostasis, but also regulate the growth and development of parietal cells. Therefore, alteration and dysregulation of ion channels and transporters in the parietal cells impairs the morphology and physiological functions of stomach, resulted in gastric diffused mucosal damage. In this review, multiple ion channels and transporters in parietal cells, including K+ channels, aquaporins, Cl- channels, Na+/H+ transporters, and Cl-/HCO3- transporters are described, and their roles in gastric diffused mucosal injury are discussed. We hope to drive researcher’s attention to focus on the role of ion channels/transporters loss in the parietal cells induced gastric diffused mucosal injury.

AbstractBackground Tripteryguim wilfordii Hook (TWH) has significant anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties and is widely used for treating autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. However, the multi-target mechanism of TWH on ankylosing spondylitis (AS) remains to be elucidated.Methods Active components and their target proteins were screened from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP). Meanwhile, AS-related targets were obtained from the Genecards Database. After overlapping, the targets of TWH against AS were collected. Then protein–protein interaction (PPI) network and core targets analysis were conducted through STRING network platform and Cytoscape software. Moreover, molecular docking methods were utilized to confirm the high affinity between TWH and targets. Finally, DAVID online tool was used to perform gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto encyclopaedia of genes and genome (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis of overlapping targets.Results The TCMSP Database results showed that there were11 active components of TWH against AS. PPI network and core targets analysis suggested that ESR1, VEGF, ICAM-1, and RELA were key targets against AS. Moreover, molecular docking methods confirmed the high affinity between bioactive molecular of TWH and their targets in AS. At last, enrichment analysis indicated that TWH participates in various biological processes, such as cell–cell adhesion, regulation of cell–matrix adhesion, acute inflammatory response, via TNF-α, NF-κB and so forth signalling pathways.Conclusion Verified by network pharmacology approach based on data mining and molecular docking methods, multi-target drug TWH may serve as a promising therapeutic candidate for AS but still needs further in vivo/in vitro experiments.

With its unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has opened a new window for time-domain discoveries in the infrared. Here we report observations in the only field that has received four epochs (spanning 126 days) of JWST NIRCam observations in Cycle 1. This field is toward MACS J0416.1−2403, which is a rich galaxy cluster at redshift z = 0.4 and is one of the Hubble Frontier Fields. We have discovered 14 transients from these data. Twelve of these transients happened in three galaxies (with z = 0.94, 1.01, and 2.091) crossing a lensing caustic of the cluster, and these transients are highly magnified by gravitational lensing. These 12 transients are likely of a similar nature to those previously reported based on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data in this field, i.e., individual stars in the highly magnified arcs. However, these 12 could not have been found by HST because they were too red and too faint. The other two transients are associated with background galaxies ( z = 2.205 and 0.7093) that are only moderately magnified, and they are likely supernovae. They indicate a demagnified supernova surface density, when monitored at a time cadence of a few months to a ∼3–4 μ m survey limit of AB ∼28.5 mag, of ∼0.5 arcmin ^−2 integrated to z ≈ 2. This survey depth is beyond the capability of HST but can be easily reached by JWST.
