In industrial detection scenarios, achieving high accuracy typically relies on extensive labeled datasets, which are costly and time-consuming. This has motivated a shift towards semi-supervised learning (SSL), which leverages labeled and unlabeled data to improve learning efficiency and reduce annotation costs. This work proposes the unsupervised spectral clustering labeling (USCL) method to optimize SSL for industrial challenges like defect variability, rarity, and complex distributions. Integral to USCL, we employ the multi-task fusion self-supervised learning (MTSL) method to extract robust feature representations through multiple self-supervised tasks. Additionally, we introduce the Enhanced Spectral Clustering (ESC) method and a dynamic selecting function (DSF). ESC effectively integrates both local and global similarity matrices, improving clustering accuracy. The DSF maximally selects the most valuable instances for labeling, significantly enhancing the representativeness and diversity of the labeled data. USCL consistently improves various SSL methods compared to traditional instance selection methods. For example, it boosts Efficient Teacher by 5%, 6.6%, and 7.8% in mean Average Precision(mAP) on the Automotive Sealing Rings Defect Dataset, the Metallic Surface Defect Dataset, and the Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) Defect Dataset with 10% labeled data. Our work sets a new benchmark for SSL in industrial settings.

The microstructure and chemical properties of the corona discharge process could provide an effective method for predicting the performance of high-voltage cable insulation materials. In this work, the depth profile of the microstructure and chemical characteristics of corona discharge-treated PE were extensively investigated using Doppler broadening of position annihilation spectroscopy accompanied with positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectra, Raman spectra and contact angle measurement. By increasing corona discharge duration, the oxygen-containing polar groups, including hydroxyl, carbonyl and ester groups, strongly contribute to the deterioration of hydrophobicity and the enhancement of hydrophilicity. And the mean free volume size, with a broadening distribution, decreases slightly. The line shape S parameter decreases because of the decrease in free volume elements and the appearance of oxygen-containing groups. Also, the thickness of the degradation layer, determined from the S parameter with positron injection depth, increases and diffuses into the PE matrix. A linear S-W plot within the degradation layer of different corona treatment duration samples indicates the defect type does not change. The S parameter decreases and the W parameter increases with an increasing corona duration. Using a slow positron beam, the nondestructive probe can be used to profile the microstructure and chemical environment across the corona discharge damage depth, which is beneficial for investigating the surface and interfacial insulation materials.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the role of foot muscle amide proton transfer weighted (APTw) contrast and tissue rest perfusion in quantifying diabetic foot (DF) infection and its correlation with blood parameters.Materials and methodsWith approval from an ethical review board, this study included 40 diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with DF and 31 DM patients without DF or other lower extremity arterial disease. All subjects underwent MRI, which included foot sagittal APTw and coronal arterial spin labeling (ASL) imaging. The normalized MTRasym (3.5 ppm) and the ratio of blood flow (rBF) in rest status of the affected side lesions to the non-affected contralateral side were determined. The inter-group differences of these variables were evaluated. Furthermore, the association between normalized MTRasym (3.5 ppm), rBF, and blood parameters [fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycosylated hemoglobin content, C-reactive protein, neutrophil percentage, and white blood cell count] was explored. Using an ROC curve, the diagnostic capacity of normalized MTRasym (3.5 ppm), BF, and blood biochemical markers in differentiating with or without DF in DM was assessed.ResultsIn the DF group, MTRasym (3.5 ppm) and BF in lesion and normalized MTRasym (3.5 ppm) were higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). In addition, correlations were identified between normalized MTRasym (3.5 ppm) and blood parameters, such as C-reactive protein, glycosylated hemoglobin content, FBG, neutrophil ratio, and white blood cell (p < 0.001). Meanwhile, association between BF in lesion and blood parameters, such as C-reactive protein, neutrophil percentage, and FBG (p < 0.01). AUC of normalized MTRasym (3.5 ppm) in identifying with/without DF in patients with DM is 0.986 (95% CI, 0.918–1.00) with the sensitivity of 97.22% and the specificity of 100%.ConclusionNormalized MTRasym (3.5 ppm) and the BF in lesion may be treated as a safer and more convenient new indicator to evaluate the tissue infection without using a contrast agent, which may be useful in monitoring and preoperatively assessing DF patients with renal insufficiency.

In the wireless charging system of electric vehicles, different charging stages have different charging requirements, namely constant-current (CC) charging mode and constant-voltage (CV) charging mode. The purpose of this paper is to provide a multi-winding wireless charging system with a reconfigurable topology to realize CC and CV charging with different optimal load resistances so that high efficiency can be achieved over a large load resistance range. The designed system can form different compensation topologies by switching on and off relays, such as the series–series topology and the inductor–capacitor–capacitor-series topology. Different topologies have different optimal load resistances, therefore, it can realize efficient transmission in a large load resistance range. In addition, the half-bridge scheme and the full-bridge scheme are the other two functioning modes for each topology. At the same time, the efficiency of the system can reach up to 94.34% and 95.13% in the half-bridge as well as full-bridge schemes under the CC mode. The highest transmission efficiency can reach 93.37% and 90.78% for the half-bridge as well as full-bridge schemes under the CC mode, respectively. Experiment results have validated the proposed method.

In the practical application of magnetic coupling wireless charging technology, the absence of direct contact between the receiver and transmitter usually leads to metal objects (MOs) entering the charging area. The strong magnetic field between the receiver and transmitter causes eddy current effects and generates large amounts of heat in MOs, which may lead to serious hazards such as fires, so it is necessary to detect accidental entry of MOs. In this paper, a novel detection coil layout suitable for wireless charging of electric vehicles (EVs) has been proposed, which consists of multiple quadrupole coils arranged to achieve decoupling from the receiver and the transmitter to minimize the effect on the system efficiency. The influence of the presence of MOs on the equivalent inductance and equivalent resistance of the quadrupole detection coil has been deduced. The simulation results show that the maximum self-inductance change rate of the proposed detection coil reaches 28.11%, and a high self-inductance variation rate is also achieved at the edge of the detection coil.

As an emerging technology, wireless power transfer (WPT) has various advantages, which can be enhanced by extending the WPT system into a multi-channel one. With the rapid development of electronic equipment, the demand for multiple independent voltage-source outputs is increasing. In many consumer electronics and industrial applications, voltage sources with multiple independent outputs are required. This paper proposes a wireless charging system with multiple constant-voltage (CV) outputs. The LCC-S (inductor capacitor capacitor-series) topology is adopted to achieve CV outputs. The output voltage can be regulated by the corresponding mutual inductance between the transmitting and receiving coils. The receiving coils are designed with overlapped areas to realize mutual decoupling, thus, each output voltage can be independent of each other. The compensating inductor is designed as a quadruple coil so that it can be integrated and decoupled with the transmitting coil at the same time, meanwhile, it can also be decoupled with the receiving coils. In this way, a multi-channel WPT system with independent CV outputs can be achieved. An experimental prototype with three CV output channels is implemented to validate the proposal. The experimental results have revealed that the three CV outputs can be stable with the load resistance variation in each channel.

A transformer can capture long-term dependencies through an attention mechanism, and hence, can be applied to various vision tasks. However, its secondary computational complexity is a major obstacle in vision tasks that require accurate predictions. To address this limitation, this study introduces linear-window attention (LWA), a new attention model for a vision transformer. The transformer computes self-attention that is restricted to nonoverlapping local windows and represented as a linear dot product of kernel feature mappings. Furthermore, the computational complexity of each window is reduced to linear from quadratic using the constraint property of matrix products. In addition, we applied the LWA to feature matching to construct a coarse-to-fine-level detector-free feature matching method, called transformer with linear-window attention for feature matching TRLWAM. At the coarse level, we extracted the dense pixel-level matches, and at the fine level, we obtained the final matching results via multi-head multilayer perceptron refinement. We demonstrated the effectiveness of LWA through Replace experiments. The results showed that the TRLWAM could extract dense matches from low-texture or repetitive pattern regions in indoor environments, and exhibited excellent results with a low computational cost for MegaDepth and HPatches datasets. We believe the proposed LWA can provide new conceptions for transformer applications in visual tasks.

Wireless charging for electric vehicles (EVs) enjoys advantages such as automation, safety, and convenience. For the most popular magnetic induction wireless power transfer (WPT) technology, different coupled coils are utilized such as the unipolar coil, the bipolar coil, and the quadruple coil. Thus, the interoperability of different coil types should be solved. Particularly, the transmitter should be interoperable with different receiving coil types, able to charge different EVs This paper proposes an interoperable solution for the two most popular coil types: the unipolar coil and the bipolar coil. The unipolar and bipolar coils are adopted on the transmitter side. Based on the transmitter-side capacitor–inductor–capacitor–capacitor (CLCC) compensation and the alteration of the switching pattern, when the receiving coil is a unipolar coil, the transmitter-side unipolar coil can work as the power transmission coil and the bipolar coil can work as the compensating inductor; when the receiving coil is a bipolar coil, the transmitter-side bipolar coil can work as the power transmission coil and the unipolar coil can work as the compensating inductor. In this way, the transmitter can be interoperable with the unipolar or bipolar receiving coil. The mathematical mode is built. A simulation model and an experimental prototype is established to validate the effectiveness of the proposal. The experimental results show that the interoperability of the receiver-side unipolar or bipolar coil can be achieved.

Li-ion batteries are expected to become the mainstream devices for green energy storage or power supply in the future due to their advantages of high energy and power density and long cycle life. Monitoring the temperature and strain change characteristics of Li-ion batteries during operation is conducive to judging their safety performance. The hinged differential lever sensitization structure was used for strain sensitization in the design of an FBG sensor, which also allowed the simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature. The temperature and strain variation characteristics on the surface of a Li-ion soft-packed battery were measured using the des.igned sensor. This report found that the charging and discharging processes of Li-ion batteries are both exothermic processes, and exothermic heat release is greater when discharging than when charging. The strain on the surface of Li-ion batteries depends on electrochemical changes and thermal expansion effects during the charge and discharge processes. The charging process showed an increasing strain, and the discharging process showed a decreasing strain. Thermal expansion was found to be the primary cause of strain at high rates.

ObjectivesTo compare the signal alterations of amide proton transfer (APT), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and fractional anisotropy (FA) in white matter (WM) lesions in multiple sclerosis (MS), compared with healthy controls (HCs), and to investigate the relationships between these changes and clinical measurements such as serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL).Materials and methodsTwenty-nine patients with relapsing-remitting MS (21 females and 8 males) and 30 HCs (23 females and 7 males) were recruited. APT-weighted (APTw) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were acquired using a 3.0-T magnetic resonance system. APTw and DTI images were registered to FLAIR-SPIR images and assessed by two neuroradiologists. MTRasym (3.5 ppm), ADC, FA values for MS and HC are calculated using mean values from all regions of interest (ROI). The ROI criteria were: (1) for MS patients, ROI were defined as MS lesions, and each lesion was identified. (2) The WM around each HC’s lateral ventricle (frontal lobe, parietal lobe, and centrum semiovale) was assessed bilaterally. The diagnostic efficacy of MTRasym (3.5 ppm), ADC, and FA in the lesions of MS patients was compared using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The associations between MTRasym (3.5 ppm), ADC, and FA values and the clinical measurements were investigated further.ResultsThe MTRasym (3.5 ppm) and ADC values of brain lesions were increased, while FA values were decreased in patients with MS. The diagnostic area under curve (AUC) of MTRasym (3.5 ppm), ADC, and FA value was 0.891 (95% CI: 0.813, 0.970), 0.761 (95% CI: 0.647, 0.875) and 0.970 (95% CI: 0.924, 1.0), respectively. sNfL was considerably positively correlated with MTRasym (3.5 ppm) (P = 0.043, R = 0.38) and disease durations were significantly negatively correlated with FA (P = 0.046, R = −0.37).ConclusionAmide proton transfer-weighted (APTw) and DTI are potential imaging methods for assessing brain lesions in patients with MS at the molecular and microscopic levels, respectively. The association between APTw, DTI parameters and clinical factors implies that they may play a role in disease damage monitoring.

This paper proposes a general methodology for the development of power system models suitable for distributed real-time simulations (D-RTS) based on topology, simulator interfaces and data exchange. D-RTS have risen as functional alternatives that can combine remote and multi-vendor resources for large-scale power system simulations via a virtual connection. However, previous work focused on combination of separate models and not the performance of D-RTS when splitting a single monolithic model, failing to study the behaviors of D-RTS, including, synchronization and accuracy. The proposed methodology is used to develop distributed models of two widely used testbed large power systems, the IEEE Australian Benchmark model and the IEEE 300-Bus system. These testbeds are selected as they can be simulated as both monolithic and distributed models in available simulators in order to validate both the methodology and resulting model performance. The obtained results and comparison between monolithic and distributed models support the proposed approach and demonstrate the performance of D-RTS under both steady-state and transient operations in multiple scenarios.

ObjectiveTo determine the distribution and diagnostic value of peripheral enthesitis detected by whole-body MRI (WBMRI) in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) diagnosis, and to determine the value of the peripheral enthesitis score in axSpA assessment.MethodsSixty axSpA patients [mean age of 33.2 (24.8–40.6) years] and 50 controls with chronic low back pain (LBP) [mean age of 34.7 (28.3–41.1) years] were enrolled. The gold standard was physician’s comprehensive diagnosis based on current classification criteria and physical examination. All subjects underwent WBMRI, and 47 peripheral entheses were assessed for each patient with scores of 0–188.ResultsWBMRI identified 155 enthesitis sites in 78.3% (n = 47) patients with axSpA. Meanwhile, 23 enthesitis sites were identified in 32% (n = 16) controls. The pelvis had the maximum number of enthesitis sites (52, 33.5%) in axSpA patients. Pelvic and anterior chest wall enthesitis had the highest sensitivity (51.67%) and specificity (100%) in axSpA diagnosis, respectively. There were different manifestations of enthesitis subtypes between axSpA patients and the control group. Osteitis was more present than soft-tissue inflammation in axSpA patients. The AUC for the number of enthesitis sites was 0.819 (95% CI 0.739–0.899), and that for the enthesitis score was 0.833 (95% CI 0.755–0.910), indicating statistically significant differences (P = 0.025). Based on the Youden index and clinical need, three enthesitis sites (sensitivity of 53.33, specificity of 98, and Youden index of 0.51) and enthesitis score (sensitivity of 58.33, specificity of 98, and Youden index of 0.56) may have the greatest value for axSpA diagnosis.ConclusionThe distribution of peripheral enthesitis can be adequately assessed by whole-body MRI, which could help diagnose axial spondyloarthritis. The enthesitis score may provide a more accurate assessment and diagnostic tool in axSpA compared with enthesitis site counting.

This paper proposes a novel WOA-based robust control scheme with two kinds of propagation latencies and external disturbance implemented in Software-Defined Wireless Networks (SDWNs) to maximize overall throughput and enhance the stability of the global network. Firstly, an adjustment model developed using the Additive-Increase Multiplicative-Decrease (AIMD) adjustment scheme with propagation latency in device-to-device paths and a closed-loop congestion control model with propagation latency in device–controller pairs are proposed, and the effect of channel competition from neighboring forwarding devices is analyzed. Subsequently, a robust congestion control model with two kinds of propagation latencies and external disturbance is established. Then, a new WOA-based scheduling strategy that considers each individual whale as a specific scheduling plan to allocate appropriate sending rates at the source side is presented to maximize the global network throughput. Afterward, the sufficient conditions are derived using Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals and formulated using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a numerical simulation is conducted to verify the effectiveness of this proposed scheme.

With the growing demand for the development of intranasal (IN) products, such as nasal vaccines, which has been especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the lack of novel technologies to accurately test the safety and effectiveness of IN products in vitro so that they can be delivered promptly to the market is critically acknowledged. There have been attempts to manufacture anatomically relevant 3D replicas of the human nasal cavity for in vitro IN drug tests, and a couple of organ-on-chip (OoC) models, which mimic some key features of the nasal mucosa, have been proposed. However, these models are still in their infancy, and have not completely recapitulated the critical characteristics of the human nasal mucosa, including its biological interactions with other organs, to provide a reliable platform for preclinical IN drug tests. While the promising potential of OoCs for drug testing and development is being extensively investigated in recent research, the applicability of this technology for IN drug tests has barely been explored. This review aims to highlight the importance of using OoC models for in vitro IN drug tests and their potential applications in IN drug development by covering the background information on the wide usage of IN drugs and their common side effects where some classical examples of each area are pointed out. Specifically, this review focuses on the major challenges of developing advanced OoC technology and discusses the need to mimic the physiological and anatomical features of the nasal cavity and nasal mucosa, the performance of relevant drug safety assays, as well as the fabrication and operational aspects, with the ultimate goal to highlight the much-needed consensus, to converge the effort of the research community in this area of work.

ObjectivesTo evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic values of glutamate chemical exchange saturation transfer (GluCEST) magnetic resonance imaging as a quantitative method for pathogenetic research and clinical application of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning-induced encephalopathy combined with the proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) and the related histopathological and behavioral changes.MethodsA total of 63 Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups. Group A (n = 12) was used for animal modeling verification; Group B (n = 15) was used for magnetic resonance molecular imaging, Group C (n = 15) was used for animal behavior experiments, and Group D (n = 21) was used for histopathological examination. All the above quantitative results were analyzed by statistics.ResultsThe peak value of carboxyhemoglobin saturation in the blood after modeling was 7.3-fold higher than before and lasted at least 2.5 h. The GluCEST values of the parietal lobe, hippocampus, and thalamus were significantly higher than the base values in CO poisoning rats (p < 0.05) and the 1H-MRS showed significant differences in the parietal lobe and hippocampus. In the Morris water maze tests, the average latency and distance were significantly prolonged in poisoned rats (p < 0.05), and the cumulative time was shorter and negatively correlated with GluCEST.ConclusionThe GluCEST imaging non-invasively reflects the changes of glutamate in the brain in vivo with higher sensitivity and spatial resolution than 1H-MRS. Our study implies that GluCEST imaging may be used as a new imaging method for providing a pathogenetic and prognostic assessment of CO-associated encephalopathy.

ABSTRACT: Background and purpose: The prenatal diagnosis of cleft palate is an important component of sequential therapy, but the relevant diagnostic methods are still limited. We aimed here, to explore the possibility of an early prenatal diagnosis of cleft palate by assessing metabolites in pregnant mice. Methods: Twenty-four inseminated females were randomly divided into retinoic acid (RA)-treated (treated with retinoic acid at 10.5 gestation days) and control groups. The metabolites of the embryonic palatal tissue, maternal amniotic fluid, and serum were characterized using 9.4T magnetic resonance spectroscopy in vitro. Then, a predictive model was established through the principal component analysis (PCA), and the correlations between the metabolites of amniotic fluid and palatal tissue were explored using orthogonal-2 partial least squares (O2- PLS). Results: The incidences of cleft palate were 100% and 0% in the RA-treated and control groups, respectively. A predictive PCA model with a high specificity and sensitivity was established for the early prenatal diagnosis of isolated cleft palate using amniotic fluid metabolic data. Between RA-treated and control mice, we found that two metabolites in the amniotic fluid and palatal tissue were correlated. Creatinine showed the same trend in the palatal tissue and amniotic fluid, while choline showed opposite trends in the two tissues. However, the data for serum metabolites could not be used to establish a prediction model. Conclusion: This study indicates that assessing the metabolites of amniotic fluid is a potential approach for the prenatal diagnosis of isolated cleft palate.

Abstract Background Nanomedicine is a promising new approach to cancer treatment that avoids the disadvantages of traditional chemotherapy and improves therapeutic indices. However, the lack of a real-time visualization imaging technology to monitor drug distribution greatly limits its clinical application. Image-tracked drug delivery is of great clinical interest; it is useful for identifying those patients for whom the therapy is more likely to be beneficial. This paper discusses a novel nanomedicine that displays features of nanoparticles and facilitates functional magnetic resonance imaging but is challenging to prepare. Results To achieve this goal, we synthesized an acylamino-containing amphiphilic block copolymer (polyethylene glycol-polyacrylamide-polyacetonitrile, PEG-b-P(AM-co-AN)) by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The PEG-b-P(AM-co-AN) has chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) effects, which enable the use of CEST imaging for monitoring nanocarrier accumulation and providing molecular information of pathological tissues. Based on PEG-b-P(AM-co-AN), a new nanomedicine PEG-PAM-PAN@DOX was constructed by nano-precipitation. The self-assembling nature of PEG-PAM-PAN@DOX made the synthesis effective, straightforward, and biocompatible. In vitro studies demonstrate decreased cytotoxicity of PEG-PAM-PAN@DOX compared to free doxorubicin (half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50), mean ~ 0.62 μg/mL vs. ~ 5 μg/mL), and the nanomedicine more efficiently entered the cytoplasm and nucleus of cancer cells to kill them. Further, in vivo animal experiments showed that the nanomedicine developed was not only effective against breast cancer, but also displayed an excellent sensitive CEST effect for monitoring drug accumulation (at about 0.5 ppm) in tumor areas. Abstract The unique electronic structure and crystal structure driven by external pressure in transition metal tellurides (TMTs) can host unconventional quantum states. Here, the discovery of pressure‐induced phase transition at ≈2 GPa, and dome‐shaped superconducting phase emerged in van der Waals layered NbIrTe4 is reported. The highest critical temperature (Tc) is ≈5.8 K at pressure of ≈16 GPa, where the interlayered Te–Te covalent bonds form simultaneously derived from the synchrotron diffraction data, indicating the hosting structure of superconducting evolved from low‐pressure two‐dimensional (2D) phase to three‐dimensional (3D) structure with pressure higher than 30 GPa. Strikingly, the authors have found an anisotropic transport in the vicinity of the superconducting state, suggesting the emergence of a “stripe”‐like phase. The dome‐shaped superconducting phase and anisotropic transport are possibly due to the spatial modulation of interlayer Josephson coupling .

Tyrosinase is a key enzyme involved in melanin synthesis. Therefore, various tyrosinase inhibitors have been screened by researchers in recent years. In the present study, we discovered a novel tyrosinase inhibitor, a peptide ECGYF (named EF-5), with free radical scavenging ability. The effect of tyrosinase inhibition by EF-5 was stronger than that of arbutin and glutathione, when analyzed both in vitro (IC50: 0.46 mM) and in vivo. The UV-Vis absorption and circular dichroism spectroscopies indicated that EF-5 interacted with tyrosinase in a different way as that of glutathione. The results of molecular docking showed that the binding between EF-5 and tyrosinase was determined majorly by hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions. EF-5 had also retained its ability to scavenge both hydroxyl and superoxide radicals in vitro and was found to be nontoxic to cells, as revealed by the MTT assay. These features suggested that the EF-5 peptide may serve as a safe and effective alternative as a tyrosinase inhibitor.

A correlation between the abnormal cerebral glucose metabolism and the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has been found in previous studies, suggesting that glucose alterations may be used to predict the histopathological diagnosis in AD. In this study, we investigated the dynamic changes of cerebral glucose uptake in vivo using MR glucose chemical exchange saturation transfer (glucoCEST) imaging in a rat model of AD with an intracerebroventricular (i.c.v) injection of amyloid Aβ-protein (25–35), confirmed by Morris water maze and Nissl staining. In total, 6 rats in the AD group and 6 rats in the control group that were given an injection of sterile normal saline were included. At 28 days after injection, all rats performed a 7.0 T MR exanimation, including glucoCEST, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and hippocampus magnetic resonance spectra (MRS), to detect the possible metabolic and structural changes in the rat brain. A significantly elevated brain glucoCEST signal in the brain of AD rats was observed, and a decreased brain glucose uptake was also explored during the progression of glucose infusion compared with those in rats of the control group. In addition, there is a significant positive correlation between glucoCEST enhancement (GCE) and myo-Inosito (Ins) in the AD group and the control group (P < 0.05). A significantly reduced number of neurons in the cortex and hippocampus in AD rats combined with the significantly longer escape and a decreased number of crossings were verified at 28 days after Aβ25–35 injection by Nissl staining and Morris water maze, respectively. Our results indicated that an abnormal brain glucose mechanism in AD rats could be detected by glucoCEST imaging, suggesting a new method to explore the occurrence and progress of diabetes-related AD or dementia.

PurposeIn this study, we aimed to use 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is clinically available, to determine the extracellular pH (pHe) of liver tumors and prospectively evaluate the ability of chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) MRI to distinguish between benign and malignant liver tumors.MethodsDifferent radiofrequency irradiation schemes were assessed for ioversol-based pH measurements at 3T. CEST effects were quantified in vitro using the asymmetric magnetization transfer ratio (MTRasym) at 4.3 ppm from the corrected Z spectrum. Generalized ratiometric analysis was conducted by rationing resolved ioversol CEST effects at 4.3 ppm at a flip angle of 60 and 350°. Fifteen patients recently diagnosed with hepatic carcinoma and five patients diagnosed with hepatic hemangioma [1 male; mean age, 48.6 (range, 37–59) years] were assessed.ResultsBy conducting dual-power CEST MRI, the pH of solutions was determined to be 6.0–7.2 at 3T in vitro. In vivo, ioversol signal intensities in the tumor region showed that the extracellular pH in hepatic carcinoma was acidic(mean ± standard deviation, 6.66 ± 0.19), whereas the extracellular pH was more physiologically neutral in hemangioma (mean ± standard deviation, 7.34 ± 0.09).The lesion size was similar between CEST pH MRI and T2-weighted imaging.Conclusiondual-power CEST MRI can detect extracellular pH in human liver tumors and can provide molecular-level diagnostic tools for differentiating benign and malignant liver tumors at 3T.

Corona discharge, an inevitable phenomenon, may lead to insulation degradation, threatening the safe and reliable operation of gas-insulated power equipment. The pulse stage is a complex but usual discharge process in corona discharge. In this paper, we investigate the pulse characteristics of negative corona discharge in a needle-to-plane electrode configuration in SF6/N2 gas mixtures under DC voltages. With an increase in mean current, a stage transition phenomenon from the Townsend stage through the pulse stage to the breakdown stage is observed. The variation in pulse amplitude and pulse time characteristics at the pulse stage is analyzed. In addition, the effects of gas pressure, gap spacing, and N2 content on onset voltage and pulse characteristic parameters, including pulse time parameters and the pulse repetition rate, at the pulse stage are presented. The results show that the current pulses mainly exhibit an irregular distribution of small amplitude. The pulse time parameters are not affected by gas pressure, gap spacing, or N2 content at pressures higher than 0.1 MPa. The pulse repetition rate decreases with an increase in gas pressure and N2 content but is only weakly affected by gap spacing, ranging from 1 kHz to dozens of kHz.

Background: Acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) is an acute febrile disease with good prognosis. It is often manifested as cough, dyspnea and fever, and sometimes may also as myalgia. However, there are no reports of AEP with sepsis-like symptoms of arthralgia, joint stiffness, lymph node enlargement, transient rashes and abnormal liver function in the literature. Case summary: A male patient with AEP was admitted to our hospital. He presented with fever, cough, arthralgia and joint stiffness, and also had transient rashes, lymph node enlargement and mild abnormal liver function. The counts of white blood cells and eosinophils were increased in peripheral blood. It seemed like sepsis, but his percutaneous lung biopsy suggested eosinophil inflammation, which had a good response to corticosteroids instead of antibiotics. Discussion: AEP is easily misdiagnosed as bacterial pneumonia with sepsis when it presents with lung infiltration on CT and atypical manifestations such as arthralgia, joint stiffness, lymph node enlargement, transient rashes and abnormal liver function. In this case, if a lot more antibiotics do not work, some of possible diseases including AEP may be considered. Increased eosinophils in peripheral blood and lung biopsy are helpful for the diagnosis of the disease.

Australia is one of the leading countries in energy transition, and its largest power system is intended to securely operate with up to 75% of variable renewable generation by 2025. High-inertia synchronous condensers, battery energy storage systems, and grid-forming converters are some of the technologies supporting this transformation while facilitating the secure operation of the grid. Synchronous condensers have enabled 2500 MW of solar and wind generation in the state of South Australia, reaching minimum operational demands of ≈100 MW. Grid-scale battery energy storage systems have demonstrated not only market benefits by cutting costs to consumers but also essential grid services during contingencies. Fast frequency response, synthetic inertia, and high fault currents are some of the grid-supporting capabilities provided by new developments that strengthen the grid while facilitating the integration of new renewable energy hubs. This manuscript provides a comprehensive overview, based on the Australian experience, of how power systems are overcoming expected challenges while continuing to integrate secure, low cost, and clean energy.

We aimed to evaluate microscale changes in the bilateral red nucleus and substantia nigra of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) using diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI). Twenty-six patients with PD [mean age, 62.5 ± 8.7 years; Hoehn-Yahr stage, 0–4.0; Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) scores, 8–43] and 15 healthy controls (mean age, 59.5 ± 9.4 years) underwent DKI of the substantia nigra and red nucleus. Imaging was performed using a General Electric (GE) Signa 3.0-T MRI system. Patients with PD were divided into two groups consisting of 12 patients with UPDRS scores ≥ 30 and 14 patients with UPDRS scores < 30. All DKI data processing operations were performed with commercial workstations (GE, ADW 4.6) using Functool software to generate color-coded and parametric maps of mean kurtosis (MK), fractional anisotropy (FA), and mean diffusivity (MD). MK values in the bilateral substantia nigra were significantly lower in patients with early- and advanced-stage PD than in controls. Moreover, MK values in the left substantia nigra were significantly lower in patients with advanced-stage PD than in those with early-stage PD. Patients with advanced-stage PD also exhibited significant decreases in MK values in the bilateral red nucleus relative to controls. No significant differences in FA or MD values were observed between the PD and control groups. There were no significant correlations between MK, FA, or MD values and UPDRS scores. Our findings suggest that decreased MK values in the substantia nigra may aid in determining the severity of PD and help provide early diagnoses.

The detection of local dielectric properties is of great importance in a wide variety of scientific studies and applications. Here, we report a novel method for the characterization of local dielectric distributions based on surface adhesion mapping by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The two-dimensional (2D) materials graphene oxide (GO), and partially reduced graphene oxide (RGO), which have similar thicknesses but large differences in their dielectric properties, were studied as model systems. Through direct imaging of the samples with a biased AFM tip in PeakForce Quantitative Nano-Mechanics (PF-QNM) mode, the local dielectric properties of GO and RGO were revealed by mapping their surface adhesion forces. Thus, GO and RGO could be conveniently differentiated. This method provides a simple and general approach for the fast characterization of the local dielectric properties of graphene-based materials and will further facilitate their applications in energy generation and storage devices.

Background/Aims: Renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury (RI/RI) is a common complication of diabetes, and it may be involved in altering intracellular calcium concentrations at its onset, which can result in inflammation, abnormal lipid metabolism, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and nitroso-redox imbalance. The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) is a G-protein coupled receptor, however, the functional involvement of CaSR in diabetic RI/ RI remains unclear. The present study was intended to investigate the role of CaSR on RI/RI in diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: The bilateral renal arteries and veins of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats were subjected to 45-min ischemia followed by 2-h reperfusion with or without R-568 (agonist of CaSR) and NPS-2143 (antagonist of CaSR) at the beginning of I/R procedure. DM without renal I/R rats served as control group. The expressions of CaSR, calmodulin (CaM), and p47phox in the renal tissue were analyzed by qRT-PCR and Western blot. The renal pathomorphology, renal function, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and calcium disorder were evaluated by detection of a series of indices by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, transmission electron microscope (TEM), commercial kits, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and spectrophotofluorometry, respectively. Results: Results showed that the expressions of CaSR, CaM, and p47phox in I/R group were significantly up-regulated as compared with those in DM group, which were accompanied by renal tissue injury, increased calcium, oxidative stress, inflammation, and nitroso-redox imbalance. Conclusion: These results suggest that activation of CaSR is involved in the induction of damage of renal tubular epithelial cell during diabetic RI/RI, resulting in lipid peroxidation, inflammatory response, nitroso-redox imbalance, and apoptosis.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) for electric vehicles is an emerging technology and a future trend. To increase power density, the coupling coefficient of coils can be designed to be large, forming a strongly coupled WPT system, different from the conventional loosely coupled WPT system. In this way, the power density and efficiency of the WPT system can be improved. This paper investigates the dual-side phase-shift control of the strongly coupled series–series compensated WPT systems. The mathematical models based on the conventional first harmonic approximation and differential equations for the dual-side phase-shift control are built and compared. The dual-side phase-shift angle and its impact on the power transfer direction and soft switching are investigated. It is found that synchronous rectification at strong couplings can lead to hard switching because the dual-side phase shift in this case is over 90°. In comparison, a relatively high efficiency and soft switching can be realized when the dual-side phase shift is below 90°. The experimental results have validated the analysis.

In light of the global effort to limit the temperature rise, many cities have undertaken initiatives to become climate-neutral, making decentralized urban energy production more relevant. This paper addresses the potential of urban wind energy production with small wind turbines, using Berlin as an example. A complete framework from data selection to economic feasibility is constructed to enable the empirical assessment of wind energy for individual buildings and Berlin as a whole. Based on a detailed dataset of all buildings and hourly wind speed on a 1 km2 grid, the results show that multiple turbines on suitable buildings can significantly contribute to households’ energy consumption but fall short of covering the full demand. For individual households, our economic evaluation strongly recommends the self-consumption of the produced electricity. The findings suggest that while the use of small wind turbines should be continuously encouraged, exploring other renewable resources or combination of wind and photovoltaic energy in the urban environment remains important.

Laminated ceramics with weak interface layers have been proven to be effective in toughening ceramics. The energy absorption ability of laminated ceramics may also benefit their ballistic performance. However, the effect of the layer structure on the ballistic performance of laminated ceramics has not been studied. Focusing on the application for body armor, this paper studied the effect of the different layer structures on the ballistic performance of laminated SiC ceramics. The laminated SiC ceramics with different layered structures were designed and prepared by tape-casting and hot-pressing. When used for the ‘in conjunction with’ armor system, the laminated SiC ceramics with a gradual-layered structure had the backface signature depth of 30% less than the laminated SiC with no interface structure and 50% less than the commercial solid-state sintered SiC. However, when used stand-alone, the laminated SiC had a similar ballistic performance regardless of the layer structure, which was likely due to the weak back support. In conclusion, the ballistic performance of the laminated ceramics was related to the back support of the armor system. When used for the ‘in conjunction with’ armor system, the laminated SiC had a better ballistic performance than that of the solid-state sintered SiC.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) deposits and some proteins play essential roles in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Amide proton transfer (APT) imaging, as an imaging modality to detect tissue protein, has shown promising features for the diagnosis of AD disease. In this study, we chose 10 AD model rats as the experimental group and 10 sham-operated rats as the control group. All the rats underwent a Y-maze test before APT image acquisition, using saturation with frequency alternating RF irradiation (APTSAFARI) method on a 7.0 T animal MRI scanner. Compared with the control group, APT (3.5 ppm) values of brain were significantly reduced in AD models (p < 0.002). The APTSAFARI imaging is more significant than APT imaging (p < 0.0001). AD model mice showed spatial learning and memory loss in the Y-maze experiment. In addition, there was significant neuronal loss in the hippocampal CA1 region and cortex compared with sham-operated rats. In conclusion, we demonstrated that APT imaging could potentially provide molecular biomarkers for the non-invasive diagnosis of AD. APTSAFARI MRI could be used as an effective tool to improve the accuracy of diagnosis of AD compared with conventional APT imaging.

It is difficult to perform an in vivo evaluation of the nerve conduction mechanism in a patient with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). We aim to explore possible activation differences to enable a further understanding of the nerve conduction mechanisms of diabetic neuropathy and to present a novel clinical method to evaluate nerve injury and recovery. DPN patients (n = 20) and healthy volunteers (n = 20) were included in this study to detect the functional activation of the lumbar spinal cord via electric stimulation. Spinal fMRI data sets were acquired via a single-shot fast spin echo (SSFSE) sequence. A task-related fMRI was performed via low-frequency electrical stimulation. After post-processing, the active voxels and the percentage of signal changes were calculated for the DPN evaluation and the correlations between the blood biochemical indexes, such as glucose, total cholesterol, and hemoglobin A1c were explored. Activation in the DPN patients was primarily observed in the T12 (10/13) vertebral level. The percentage of signal changes in DPN patients was higher than that in the control group (Z = −2.757, P < 0.05). Positive correlation between the percentage of signal changes and the total cholesterol/glucose in the DNP group was found (P < 0.05). Lumbar spinal cord fMRI, based on the SEEP effect, was determined to be feasible. The repetitive activation distribution was primarily located at the T12 vertebral level. Lumbar spinal cord fMRI might be used as a potential tool to assess and reveal the nerve conduction mechanisms in DPN.

To explore the capability of the amide-proton-transfer weighted (APTW) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of clinical neurological deficit at the time of hospitalization and assessment of long-term daily functional outcome for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We recruited 55 AIS patients with brain MRI acquired within 24–48 h of symptom onset and followed up with their 90-day modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score. APT weighted MRI was performed for all the study subjects to measure APTW signal quantitatively in the acute ischemic area (APTWipsi) and the contralateral side (APTWcont). Change of the APT signal between the acute ischemic region and the contralateral side (ΔAPTW) was calculated. Maximum APTW signal (APTWmax) and minimal APTW signal (APTWmin) were also acquired to demonstrate APTW signals heterogeneity (APTWmax−min). In addition to extracellular β-amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles, neuroinflammation has been identified as a key pathological characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Once activated, neuroinflammatory cells called microglia acquire different activation phenotypes. At the early stage of AD, activated microglia are mainly dominated by the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. Conversely, in the later stage of AD, the excessive activation of microglia is considered detrimental and pro-inflammatory, turning into the M1 phenotype. Therapeutic strategies targeting the modulation of microglia may regulate their specific phenotype. Fortunately, with the rapid development of in vivo imaging methodologies, visualization of microglial activation has been well-explored. In this review, we summarize the critical role of activated microglia during the pathogenesis of AD and current studies concerning imaging of microglial activation in AD patients. We explore the possibilities for identifying activated microglial phenotypes with imaging techniques and highlight promising therapies that regulate the microglial phenotype in AD mice.

The structure, evolution, and function of heat shock proteins 90 (Hsp90s) have been investigated in great detail in fungi and animals. However, studies on the Hsp90 genes in plants are generally limited. Brachypodium distachyon (L.) P. Beauv., as a model plant for cereal crops, has become a potential biofuel grass. During its long evolution, the Hsp90 gene family in Brachypodium has developed some strategies to cope with adverse environments. How the Hsp90 gene family in Brachypodium evolved in different plant lineages and what its role is in plant responses to drought and salt stresses remains to be elucidated. We used a set of different bioinformatics tools to identify 94 Hsp90 genes from 10 species representing four plant lineages and classified into three subgroups. Eight BdHsp90 genes were detected from B. distachyon. The number of exon-intron structures differed in each subgroup, and the motif analysis revealed that these genes were relatively conservative in each group. The fragments duplication and tandem duplication, which are the prime powers for functional diversity, generally occurred during the duplication of the whole plant genome. Transcriptional analysis of the BdHsp90 genes under salt and drought stress conditions indicated that the expression of these genes was delayed or increased at different stress time points; The expression was more affected in that of Bradi3g39630, Bradi4g06370, and Bradi1g30130. Our findings suggest the involvement of BdHsp90s in plant abiotic stress response, and further consolidate our views on the stress response mechanism of Hsp90 in general.

The detection of short exons is a challenging open problem in the field of bioinformatics. Due to the fact that the weakness of existing model-independent methods lies in their inability to reliably detect small exons, a model-independent method based on the singularity detection with wavelet transform modulus maxima has been developed for detecting short coding sequences (exons) in eukaryotic DNA sequences. In the analysis of our method, the local maxima can capture and characterize singularities of short exons, which helps to yield significant patterns that are rarely observed with the traditional methods. In order to get some information about singularities on the differences between the exon signal and the background noise, the noise level is estimated by filtering the genomic sequence through a notch filter. Meanwhile, a fast method based on a piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial is applied to reconstruct the wavelet coefficients for improving the computational efficiency. In addition, the output measure of a paired-numerical representation calculated in both forward and reverse directions is used to incorporate a useful DNA structural property. The performances of our approach and other techniques are evaluated on two benchmark data sets. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms all assessed model-independent methods for detecting short exons in terms of evaluation metrics.

Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) is an emerging MRI contrast mechanism that is capable of noninvasively imaging dilute CEST agents and local properties such as pH and temperature, augmenting the routine MRI methods. However, the routine CEST MRI includes a long RF saturation pulse followed by fast image readout, which is associated with high specific absorption rate and limited spatial resolution. In addition, echo planar imaging (EPI)-based fast image readout is prone to image distortion, particularly severe at high field. To address these limitations, we evaluated magnetization transfer (MT) prepared gradient echo (GRE) MRI for CEST imaging. We proved the feasibility using numerical simulations and experiments in vitro and in vivo. Then we optimized the sequence by serially evaluating the effects of the number of saturation steps, MT saturation power (B1), GRE readout flip angle (FA), and repetition time (TR) upon the CEST MRI, and further demonstrated the endogenous amide proton CEST imaging in rats brains (n = 5) that underwent permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion. The CEST images can identify ischemic lesions in the first 3 hours after occlusion. In summary, our study demonstrated that the readily available MT-prepared GRE MRI, if optimized, is CEST-sensitive and remains promising for translational CEST imaging.

AIM: To characterize the abnormal metabolic profile of all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA)-induced craniofacial development in mouse embryos using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). METHODS: Timed-pregnant mice were treated by oral gavage on the morning of embryonic gestation day 11 (E11) with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA). Dosing solutions were adjusted by maternal body weight to provide 30, 70, or 100 mg/kg RA. The control group was given an equivalent volume of the carrier alone. Using an Agilent 7.0 T MR system and a combination of surface coil coils, a 3 mm×3 mm×3 mm 1H-MRS voxel was selected along the embryonic craniofacial tissue. 1H-MRS was performed with a single-voxel method using PRESS sequence and analyzed using LCModel software. Hematoxylin and eosin was used to detect and confirm cleft palate. RESULT: 1H-MRS revealed elevated choline levels in embryonic craniofacial tissue in the RA70 and RA100 groups compared to controls (P
