Abstract Utilizing ultrafast light-matter interaction to manipulate electronic states of quantum materials is an emerging area of research in condensed matter physics. It has significant implications for the development of future ultrafast electronic devices. However, the ability to induce long-lasting metastable electronic states in a fully reversible manner is a long-standing challenge. Here, by using ultrafast laser excitations, we demonstrate the capability to manipulate the electronic polar states in the charge-density-wave material EuTe4 in a non-volatile manner. The process is completely reversible and is achieved at room temperature with an all-optical approach. Each induced non-volatile state brings about modifications to the electrical resistance and second harmonic generation intensity. The results point to layer-specific phase inversion dynamics by which photoexcitation mediates the stacking polar order of the system. Our findings extend the scope of non-volatile all-optical control of electronic states to ambient conditions, and highlight a distinct role of layer-dependent phase manipulation in quasi-two-dimensional systems with inherent sublayer stacking orders.

Abstract The interplay of topology, magnetism, and correlations gives rise to intriguing phases of matter. In this study, through state-of-the-art angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, density functional theory, and dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we visualize a fourfold degenerate Dirac nodal line at the boundary of the bulk Brillouin zone in the antiferromagnet YMn2Ge2. We further demonstrate that this gapless, antiferromagnetic Dirac nodal line is enforced by the combination of magnetism, space-time inversion symmetry, and nonsymmorphic lattice symmetry. The corresponding drumhead surface states traverse the whole surface Brillouin zone. YMn2Ge2 thus serves as a platform to exhibit the interplay of multiple degenerate nodal physics and antiferromagnetism. Interestingly, the magnetic nodal line displays a d-orbital dependent renormalization along its trajectory in momentum space, thereby manifesting Hund’s coupling. Our findings offer insights into the effect of electronic correlations on magnetic Dirac nodal lines, leading to an antiferromagnetic Hund nodal line.

BackgroundAtopic dermatitis (AD) is inflammatory disease. So far, therapeutic mechanism of Runfuzhiyang powder on AD remains to be studied. This study aimed to mine key biomarkers to explore potential molecular mechanism for AD incidence and Runfuzhiyang powder treatment.MethodsThe control group, AD group, treat group (AD mice treated with Runfuzhiyang powder were utilized for studying. Differentially expressed AD-related genes were acquired by intersecting of key module genes related to control group, AD group and treatment group which were screened by WGCNA and AD-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs). KEGG and GO analyses were further carried out. Next, LASSO regression analysis was utilized to screen feature genes. The ROC curves were applied to validate the diagnostic ability of feature genes to obtain AD-related biomarkers. Then protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, immune infiltration analysis and single-gene gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) were presented. Finally, TF-mRNA-lncRNA and drug-gene networks of biomarkers were constructed.Results4 AD-related biomarkers (Ddit4, Sbf2, Senp8 and Zfp777) were identified in AD groups compared with control group and treat group by LASSO regression analysis. The ROC curves revealed that four biomarkers had good distinguishing ability between AD group and control group, as well as AD group and treatment group. Next, GSEA revealed that pathways of E2F targets, KRAS signaling up and inflammatory response were associated with 4 biomarkers. Then, we found that Ddit4, Sbf2 and Zfp777 were significantly positively correlated with M0 Macrophage, and were significantly negatively relevant to Resting NK. Senp8 was the opposite. Finally, a TF-mRNA-lncRNA network including 200 nodes and 592 edges was generated, and 20 drugs targeting SENP8 were predicted.Conclusion4 AD-related and Runfuzhiyang powder treatment-related biomarkers (Ddit4, Sbf2, Senp8 and Zfp777) were identified, which could provide a new idea for targeted treatment and diagnosis of AD.

Loads and strains in critical areas play a crucial role in aircraft structural health monitoring, the tracking of individual aircraft lifespans, and the compilation of load spectra. Direct measurement of actual flight loads presents challenges. This process typically involves using load-strain stiffness matrices, derived from ground calibration tests, to map measured flight parameters to loads at critical locations. Presently, deep learning neural network methods are rapidly developing, offering new perspectives for this task. This paper explores the potential of deep learning models in predicting flight parameter loads and strains, integrating the methods of flight parameter preprocessing techniques, flight maneuver recognition (FMR), virtual ground calibration tests for wings, dimensionality reduction of flight data through Autoencoder (AE) network models, and the application of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network models to predict strains. These efforts contribute to the prediction of strains in critical areas based on flight parameters, thereby enabling real-time assessment of aircraft damage.

In flat band materials, the ’flat’ dispersion of the electronic states mean that interactions between electrons can be strong, potentially leading to a variety of interesting magnetic and transport properties. Here, Nag et al study the Kagomé semimetal Co3Sn2S2, and show a nearly flat Stoner excitation dispersion, a clear indication of spin-polarized and flat electronic bands.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing of electromagnetic (EM) waves is of great significance for high-speed wireless communication and remote sensing. To achieve high-efficiency OAM multiplexing for multi-channel incident EM waves, this paper presents a novel angle-dispersive meta-atom structure, which can introduce the required anti-symmetric phase dispersion as well as high transmission efficiency for OAM multiplexing. These meta-atoms are then arranged delicately to form an angle-dispersive metasurface working at the X band, which enables three-channel OAM multiplexing by converting highly directional transverse-magnetic (TM) waves incident from 0 and ±45° to coaxial OAM beams with l = 0 and ±2 modes, respectively. The simulation and experimental results reveal that the proposed metasurface can convert a higher proportion of energy to the required OAM modes compared to the conventional OAM multiplexing metasurfaces, which can significantly improve the coaxial transmission efficiency of multi-channel OAM multiplexing.

Flight maneuver recognition (FMR) is a critical tool for capturing essential information about the state of an aircraft, which is necessary to improve pilot training, flight safety, and autonomous air combat. However, due to the alignment of multidimensional, multimodal time series and insufficient data, challenges exist that limit the accuracy of FMR. In this paper, two FMR methods, including an improved dynamic time-warping distance-based algorithm (D-DTW) and a perceptually important point-based method, are proposed based on time series mining techniques. The differential dynamics equations of the aircraft’s center of gravity in the trajectory coordinate system are established. Subsequently, based on the obtained flight data, the engine thrust is derived by employing criteria based on flight mechanics and coordinate system transformation methods. Finally, the flight profile is clustered and divided based on the preprocessed data. The engine load factor is obtained through centroid transformation and coordinate system translation based on flight dynamics calculations. The results indicate that the two methods exhibit varying applicability with respect to FMR. However, the second method is more suitable regarding the recognition or prediction of engine thrust and load factor.

By exploiting the geometric frustration of a kagome crystal lattice, it is possible to enhance electron localisation and engineer exotic electronic structures such as electronic flat bands. Here, the authors use inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the evolution of spin excitations modes for FeSn and CoSn, finding that an anomalous flat mode actually arises from the material used to fix the sample to the aluminium holder for analysis instead of the expected magnetic flat bands.

The typical characters of the electronic structure of magnetic kagome materials remain elusive. Here, the authors observe a Dirac cone, a flat band and a saddle point near the Fermi energy in ferromagnetic kagome material YMn6Sn6.

High-precision operational flight loads are essential for monitoring fatigue of individual aircraft and are usually determined by flight parameters. To tackle the nonlinear relationship between flight loads and flight parameters for more accurate prediction of flight loads, artificial neural networks have been widely studied. However, there are still two major problems, namely the training strategy and sensitivity analysis of the flight parameters. For the first problem, the gradient descent method is usually used, which is time-consuming and can easily converge to a local solution. To solve this problem, an extreme learning machine is proposed to determine the weights based on a Moore–Penrose generalized inverse. Moreover, a genetic algorithm method is proposed to optimize the weights between the input and hidden layers. For the second problem, a mean impact value (MIV) method is proposed to measure the sensitivity of the flight parameters, and the neuron number in the hidden layer is also optimized. Finally, based on the measured dataset of an aircraft, the proposed flight load prediction method is verified to be effective and efficient. In addition, a comparison is made with some well-known neural networks to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method.

Iron-pnictide superconductors share similar topological band structure with iron-chalcogenide superconductors, but no Majorana modes have been observed in the former. Here, the authors observe both the superconducting Dirac surface states and Majorana zero modes inside its vortex cores in CaKFe4As4.

Abstract An ultrathin and flexible metamaterial absorber (MA) with triple absorption peaks is presented in this paper. The proposed absorber has been designed in such a way that three absorption peaks are located at 8.5, 13.5, and 17 GHz (X and Ku bands) with absorption of 99.9%, 99.5%, and 99.9%, respectively. The proposed structure is only 0.4 mm thick, which is approximately 1/88, 1/55, and 1/44 for the respective free space wavelengths of absorption frequency in various bands. The MA is also insensitive due to its symmetric geometry. In addition, the proposed structure exhibits minimum 86% absorption (TE incidence) within 60° angle of incidence. For TM incidence, the proposed absorber exhibits more than 99% absorptivity up to 60° incidence. Surface current and electric field distributions were investigated to analyze the mechanism governing absorption. Parameter analyses were performed for absorption optimization. Moreover, the performance of the MA was experimentally demonstrated in free space on a sample under test with 20 × 30 unit cells fabricated on a flexible dielectric. Under normal incidence, the fabricated MA exhibits near perfect absorption at each absorption peak for all polarization angles, and the experimental results were found to be consistent with simulation results. Due to its advantages of high-efficiency absorption over a broad range of incidence angles, the proposed absorber can be used in energy harvesting and electromagnetic shielding.

The understanding of kagome bands, which are characterized by Dirac-like bands capped by a flat band, remains largely elusive. Here, Liu et al. report the observation of a flat band and Dirac bands as ideal features of kagome bands in CoSn, revealing orbital-selective character.

Recently, much attention has been paid to beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) for radio communication, which faces a great challenge of dynamic generation of OAM with different topological charges. In this paper, a novel reflective metasurface is designed to generate mode-reconfigurable OAM beams in radio frequency domain. Each unit cell of the proposed metasurface consists of an octagonal ring slot and a varactor diode. The response of each element to incident radio field can be engineered individually by controlling the voltage of the corresponding varactor diode, thereby dynamically producing OAM with different modes. Full-wave simulations show that the designed reflective metasurface can generate frequency-adjustable OAM beams with different topological charges of l = +1, +2, -1, -2 over a frequency range of 5.2 GHz~5.8 GHz. An OAM purity analysis further verified the reliability of OAM beams generated by the proposed metasurface. The obtained results are in good agreements with the theoretical analyses, demonstrating a good prospect of practical application.

We propose an F-band phase shifter based on the nematic liquid crystals (NLCs). The proposed phase shifter is formed by a voltage-controlled cavity through introducing an NLC layer between a dipole structure array and a metal floor. Under the action of electric field, the orientation of the NLC molecules will be deflected. We adjust the resonant frequency and phase of the reflected electromagnetic (EM) wave by tuning the permittivity. The transmission characteristics and the LC parameters are calculated and analyzed for EM waves within the frequency range from 85 to 115 GHz. The LC-based device with a $30\times 30$ array of two parallel unequal dipoles is printed on a quartz substrate, with 4 cm $\times {4}$ cm area and $490~\mu \text{m}$ thickness. The experimental results show that phase shift of zero to 350.7° is achieved at 104.2 GHz by changing the applied bias voltage on the LC layer from 0 to 20 V. Considering the anisotropy and inhomogeneity of the LC, an improved electrification model is established and compared with the test results. The proposed phase shifter is expected to find several applications in millimeter wave and terahertz reconfigurable antenna systems.

This paper presents the design and process of two highly sensitive sensors working in the terahertz band. The sensors comprise the quartz substrate, medium, reflection plate, and metal resonant layer with a symmetrical single-slot patch array. The devices help study the electrically induced permittivity of two liquid crystals in different frequency bands and at different voltages, and the experimental data verify that both liquid crystals have a large birefringence. Based on experimental results, the sensitivity of the fabricated sensor is 47.03 GHz/RIU in the frequency range 90–140 GHz. Similarly, the other fabricated sensor has a sensitivity of 112.47 GHz/RIU in the frequency range 325–500 GHz. The results show that both sensors have superior sensing properties and potential applications in biological and chemical liquid sensing.

In this paper, we present a novel design of an electrically tunable metamaterial device in the terahertz frequency range of 325–500 GHz. The device is analyzed and optimized using an equivalent circuit and numerical simulation. The experimental and simulation results are almost identical in the entire design frequency range. A maximum modulation depth of 90.87% is achieved in the transmission window. The bandpass width decreases from 102.55 to 28.7 GHz as the bias voltage increases from 0 to 30 V. This structure provides new insights into the potential of electrically tunable terahertz devices for a wide range of applications.

Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) has become a prevalent design for aeronautical and aerospace engineering. The main problem is that it is impractical in complex cases with multi-failure regions, especially in multi-objective optimization. The active learning method can obtain an adaptive size of samples to get a relatively acceptable accuracy. The problem of RBDO using the traditional active learning Kriging (ALK) method is that the design space is generally still and only one training point is selected, which is not reasonable based on the concept of importance sampling and parallel calculation. As a consequence, the accuracy improvement is limited. In this paper, we investigate the method of obtaining an optimal size of design and reliability to assess space in parallel, simultaneously. A strategy of parallel adaptive candidate (PAIC) region with ALK is proposed and a sequential optimization and reliability assessment (SORA) method is modified to efficiently improve the accuracy. Importance sampling is used as a demonstration for the modified SORA with more accuracy. The method is then verified using mathematical cases and a scooping system of an amphibious aircraft.

In this work, a single-band metamaterial absorber (MA) based on a three dimensional (3D) resonant structure is presented. The unit cell is composed of a standing gear-shaped resonator, which is embedded in the dielectric substrate. The proposed 3D MA is ultrathin with a total thickness of 2.3 mm, corresponding 0.077λ0 at its center frequency. The simulation results demonstrate a high absorption peak at 10.1 GHz with absorptivity of 99.9%. The proposed 3D MA is insensitive to the polarization of the incident wave due to its rotationally symmetric structure. Moreover, the proposed 3D MA exhibits a wide-incident-angle stability, as absorptivity of more than 85% can be achieved for both TE and TM incidences with incident angle up to 60°. Most importantly, multiband electromagnetic wave absorption of the stereo MA can be enabled by adjusting the structural parameters of the standing gear. The proposed structure is compatible with 3D printing technology and has potential applications in electromagnetic shielding.

This study investigated a novel electronically controlled two-dimensional beam-scanning reflective array antenna (reflectarray), which uses nematic liquid crystals. A double-dipole resonance structure is used as the phase-shift unit for the reflectarray for the required phase compensation. The simulation shows that, for about 7 GHz bandwidth of the phase shift range, over 360° can be achieved at the F-band. In addition, a novel wiring scheme is proposed to reduce the adverse effect of the biasing line on the phase-shift performance and simplify the manufacturing process. A simulation of the designed 39 × 39 reflectarray shows that the maximum beam steering range, maximum gain, and side-lobe level at 115 GHz are 20°, 16.55 dBi, and −8.4 dB, respectively.

In this article, we present a study of the equivalent dielectric constant of two nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with different thicknesses, in the region from 90 to 140 GHz. The equivalent dielectric constant of the LCs was measured using a frequency selective surface (FSS). The LC-based tunable FSS with 22 × 25 unit cells was printed on a quartz substrate with an area of 4 × 4 cm2 and a thickness of 480 µm; the LC layer with thicknesses ranging from 30 to 100 µm acted as a substrate. The FSS featured a maximum frequency-shifting range of 8.15 GHz and 30 µm-thick LC layers with mutually orthogonal rubbing directions were deposited on it. The results show that the initial equivalent dielectric constant of the LC layer increased with the LC layer thickness, while the saturation-equivalent dielectric constant remained almost constant. This work provides LC parameters that can be useful for the design of LC-based devices in the millimeter and terahertz ranges.

In this paper, with the aids of the Monte Carlo simulations, we have investigated the depolarization performances of circularly polarized light (CPL) and linearly polarized light (LPL) transmitted in homogeneous scattering media systems. The depolarization performances depend on the number density, refractive index, and the concrete size distributions of scattering particles. Here, we mainly investigate the mixed ratio and distribution effect of scattering particles on the depolarization performances of CPL and LPL, respectively. The simulation results show that there exist larger mismatches in the depolarization performances between monodisperse and polydisperse scattering systems, and with increasing small particles' proportion the degree of linear polarization decreases slightly, but the degree of circular polarization decreases drastically. When the size distribution of scattering particles obey the logarithmic normal distribution, the simulated results show that the propagation behavior of the incident light in a polydisperse medium system with standard deviation of σ = 0.1 μm can be modeled very well by the corresponding monodisperse medium system with the mean value, however, the approximation will fail for a scattering medium with larger standard deviation of σ = 0.5 μm. These results demonstrated that the depolarization behavior of light was sensitive to the mixed ratio or the distribution state of particles, which was significant to the polarization engineering, such as polarization imaging and polarization based communications.

Abstract In this paper, a high-order dielectric metasurface based on silicon nanobrick array is proposed and investigated. By controlling the length and width of the nanobricks, the metasurfaces could supply two different incremental transmission phases for the X-linear-polarized (XLP) and Y-linear-polarized (YLP) light with extremely high efficiency over 88%. Based on the designed metasurface, two polarization beam splitters working in high-order diffraction modes have been designed successfully, which demonstrated a high transmitted efficiency. In addition, we have also designed two vortex-beam generators working in high-order diffraction modes to create vortex beams with the topological charges of 2 and 3. The employment of dielectric metasurfaces operating in high-order diffraction modes could pave the way for a variety of new ultra-efficient optical devices.

The microscopic mechanism underlying an enhanced superconductivity in electron-doped iron selenide superconductor remains unclear. Here, Pan et al. report the spin excitations of Li0.8Fe0.2ODFeSe, revealing analogous momentum structure and dispersion to hole-doped cuprates.

Condensed Matter Physics: nematic order does not exist in FeS Low energy spin excitations show no sign of nematic order existing in FeS, a structure-similar material of FeSe, without direct coupling to superconductivity. An international team led by Pengcheng Dai at the Rice University and Beijing Normal University carried out transport, neutron scattering, quantum oscillation measurements combined with theoretical calculations to study single crystals of FeS. They found that the spin excitations below 100 meV reveal only stripe-type spin fluctuations without direct coupling to superconductivity, suggesting FeS being a tetragonal paramagnet without nematic order and with a reduced quasiparticle mass compared to that of FeSe. These results not only suggest that FeS is a weakly correlated analog of FeSe, but also shed a light to understand the nematic order in FeSe, which is due to the competing spin fluctuations driven by frustrated magnetic interactions.

In the previous work, two new nematic liquid crystal (NLC) mixtures, E7-2 and S200-2, were produced by adding eight LC monomers to two commercial LCs S200 and E7, respectively. At λ = 589 nm, the birefringence (Δn) characteristics of the two LC nematic mixtures E7-2 (Δn = 0.260) and S200-2 (Δn = 0.298) are greater than those of the commercial LC E7 (Δn = 0.224) and S200 (Δn = 0.266). The properties (TN-I, ε//, Δɛ, K11, and K33) of these four NLCs were measured. A double-layer metal loop arrays modulation structure based on metamaterial (MM) metal−dielectric−metal (MDM) was designed and fabricated for use in the THz frequency range. The results show that the LC mixtures E7-2 and S200-2 have greater modulation depth (MD) and less modulation insertion loss (IL) than E7 and S200 at THz frequencies. The results show that LC mixtures have significant potential for designing active tunable LC-based devices in the THz and visible light range.

In this paper, a tunable patch array based on high-order is proposed at the frequency of 300 GHz, achieving active controllable beam steering, focusing and generation of orbital angular momentum vortex beams. It has been demonstrated that the patch array can achieve wide beam scanning angle by controlling the phase of array elements with tunable phase shifters. Meanwhile, beam focusing on the specified position can also be realized by phase modulation of array elements based on the focusing theory. In addition, we also designed a patch array to generate vortex beams with multiple topological charges by high-order modes. The performances show that the patch antenna array we designed has a good application prospect.

An electrically tuned phase shifter based on the single slot unit cell and liquid crystal for a reconfigurable reflectarray antenna was presented. The simulation and measured results obtained at the F-band were used to demonstrate that the dielectric properties of a nematic state liquid crystal could be exploited to realize a slot unit cell phase shifter for the reconfigurable reflectarrays antennas. By reducing the inhomogeneous of the external electric field in the liquid crystal layer, a lower control voltage and improved model accuracy was obtained. In the experiments test, the achieved saturation bias voltage (10 V) was smaller than the previously reported structure, and the phase shift of the reflectarray greater than 300° was achieved in the frequency range 121.5⁻126 GHz. The maximum phase shift of 306° occurred at 124.5 GHz.

This paper introduces a tunable metamaterial absorber (MA) based on polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC) in the terahertz (THz) frequency band. Under the optimal polymerization condition, through electrical control of the orientation of the PNLC embedded in the frequency selective surface, the resonant frequency of the absorber can be tuned from 416.5 to 405.0 GHz, corresponding to fractional frequency bandwidth of 2.8%. The experimental results show that the proposed MA based on the PNLC offers an adjustment time of 10 ms and recovery time of 85 ms, which is significantly faster than the tunable metamaterial devices based on conventional nematic liquid crystal (LC).

A new CS-based inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging framework is proposed to enhance both the image performance and the robustness at a low SNR. An ISAR echo preprocessing method for enhancing the ISAR imaging quality of compressed sensing (CS) based algorithms is developed by implementing matched filtering, echo denoising and matrix optimization sequentially. After the preprocessing, the two-dimensional (2D) SL0 algorithm is applied to reconstruct an ISAR image in the range and cross-range plane through a series of 2D matrices using the 2D CS theory, rather than converting the 2D convex optimization problem to the one-dimensional (1D) problem in the image reconstruction process. The proposed preprocessing framework is verified by simulations and experiment. Simulations and experimental results show that the ISAR image obtained by the 2D sparse recovery algorithm with our proposed method has a better performance.

We present a wideband metamaterial (MM) filter based on a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) structure. The proposed structure consists of a quartz dielectric substrate and two metallic square-loop arrays, which were deposited on both surfaces of the substrate. The performance of the proposed design was numerically simulated by considering the angle of incidence. The surface current and electric field distributions were calculated for the two resonant frequencies to examine the intrinsic mechanism of the proposed filter. The transmittance of the structure for various oblique angles of incidence was also analyzed. It is generally challenging to completely align the two metallic layers due to limitations in the manufacturing process. Hence, the influence of periodic misalignment on wave propagation was studied. Furthermore, a prototype of the proposed structure was fabricated and the transmission spectra were measured. Simulation and experimental results reveal that our proposed filter can achieve wideband transmission in the F-band. This work is valuable for the design of broadband filters in millimeter and terahertz waves.

A polarization-dependent, frequency-selective metamaterial (MM) absorber based on a single-layer patterned resonant structure intended for F frequency band is proposed. The design, fabrication, and measurement for the proposed absorber are presented. The absorber’s absorption properties at resonant frequencies have unique characteristics of a single-band, dual-band, or triple-band absorption for different polarization of the incident wave. The calculated surface current distributions and power loss distribution provide further understanding of physical mechanism of resonance absorption. Moreover, a high absorption for a wide range of TE-polarized oblique incidence was achieved. Hence, the MM structure realized on a highly flexible polyimide film, makingthe absorber suitable for conformal geometry applications. The proposed absorber has great potential in the development of polarization detectors and polarizers.

A new LFM-signal detector formulated by the integration of the 4th-power modulus of the fractional Fourier transform is proposed. It has similar performance to the modulus square detector of Radon-ambiguity transform because of the equivalence relationship between them. But the new detector has much lower computational complexity in the case that the number of the searching angles is far less than the length of the signal. Moreover, it is proved that the new detector can be generalized to the integration of the nth-power (2

The heavy fermion (HF) state of d-electron systems is of great current interest since it exhibits various exotic phases and phenomena that are reminiscent of the Kondo effect in f -electron HF systems. Here, we present a combined infrared spectroscopy and first-principles band structure calculation study of the 3d-electron HF compound YFe2Ge2. The infrared response exhibits several charge-dynamical hallmarks of HF and a corresponding scaling behavior that resemble those of the f -electron HF systems. In particular, the low-temperature spectra reveal a dramatic narrowing of the Drude response along with the appearance of a hybridization gap (Δ ~50 meV) and a strongly enhanced quasiparticle effective mass. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the infrared response indicates a crossover around T* ~100K from a coherent state at low temperature to a quasi-incoherent one at high temperature. Despite of these striking similarities, our band structure calculations suggest that the mechanism underlying the HF behavior in YFe2Ge2 is distinct from the Kondo scenario of the f -electron HF compounds and even from that of the d-electron iron-arsenide superconductor KFe2As2. For the latter, the HF state is driven by orbital-selective correlations due to a strong Hund's coupling. Instead, for YFe2Ge2 the HF behavior originates from the band flatness near the Fermi level induced by the combined effects of kinetic frustration from a destructive interference between the direct Fe-Fe and indirect Fe-Ge-Fe hoppings, band hybridization involving Fe 3d and Y 4d electrons, and electron correlations.
