Abstract Background The mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress imbalance caused by macrophage polarization play a role in the progression of COPD, with CDGSH iron–sulfur domain-containing protein 1 (CISD1) playing a key role. This study revealed the role and mechanism of CISD1 in smoke-induced macrophages. Methods Using a pure cigarette smoke exposure-induced COPD mouse model, stimulation of Raw264.7 macrophages with cigarette smoke extract mimics the COPD environment. Knocking down CISD1 expression in macrophages and combining it with high-throughput sequencing to obtain subsequent differentially expressed genes and pathways. Macrophage polarization tendency under different treatments was determined using flow cytometry. Meanwhile, Mitosox, JC-1, DCFH-DA fluorescence intensity was measured to detect mitochondrial function and cellular oxidative stress levels. Western Blot technique was employed to validate autophagy (mitochondrial autophagy) pathway-related proteins. In addition, Elisa technique was used to measure inflammatory factors (IL-6, TNF-a) in the cell supernatant after co-culturing macrophages (Raw264.7) with epithelial cells (MLE12). Results CISD1 is underexpressed in peripheral blood monocytes of COPD patients. Under in vitro conditions, we verified that cigarette smoke (smoke extract) indeed inhibits CISD1 expression in macrophages. Subsequently, we found that macrophages with knocked-down CISD1 tend to polarize towards M1 phenotype, and exhibit signs of mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress imbalance. In addition, we observed significant activation of the autophagy pathway in CISD1-inhibited macrophages, with upregulation of LC3A/B and downregulation of p62 protein, as well as increased expression of mitochondrial autophagy-related proteins (PINK1, PARKN). Furthermore, co-culturing CISD1-knockdown macrophages (Raw264.7) with epithelial cells (MLE12) resulted in upregulation of inflammatory factors in the supernatant. Conclusions Smoke-induced reduction of CISD1 in macrophages promotes M1 polarization and mitochondrial dysfunction by activating the autophagy pathway, thereby promoting the occurrence and development of COPD.

ObjectivesThis study aims to explore the relationship between the severity of asthma and neutrophils and related oxidative stress-associated molecules in peripheral blood and induced sputum.MethodsA total of 67 subjects were included in this study, namely, 25 patients with severe asthma and 42 patients with non-severe asthma. Clinical data, induced sputum and peripheral blood were collected. Lung function and molecules related to oxidative stress in induced sputum and peripheral blood of asthma patients were detected. The relationship between neutrophils and asthma severity was analyzed. HDAC2 mRNA and protein expression levels and HDAC2 activity were also analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to select statistically significant variables.ResultsThe absolute value of neutrophils and percentage of neutrophils were higher in the severe asthma patients. These two values were used to predict the severity of asthma by ROC analysis, with the best cutoff values being 4.55 × 109/L (sensitivity 83.3%, specificity 64.0%) and 55.15% (sensitivity 54.8%, specificity 88.0%). The ROS concentration of neutrophils in the induced sputum samples and the 8-iso-PGF2α concentration in the peripheral blood samples were higher in the severe asthma group (P = 0.012; P = 0.044), whereas there was reduced HDAC2 protein activity in PBMCs (P < 0.001). A logistic equation and a nomogram were created to give a precise prediction of disease severity.ConclusionOxidative stress is increased in severe asthma patients. Peripheral blood neutrophils and 8-iso-PGF2α can be used as biomarkers to predict the severity of asthma. A prediction model was created for evaluating asthma severity.

Single-shot dual-wavelength interferometry offers a promising avenue for surface profile measurement of dynamic objects. However, current techniques employing pixel multiplexing or color cameras encounter challenges such as complex optical alignment, limited measurement range, and difficulty in measuring rough surfaces. To address these issues, this study presents a novel approach to single-shot dual-wavelength interferometry. By utilizing separated polarization illumination and detection, along with a monochromatic polarization camera and two slightly different wavelengths, this method enables the simultaneous recording of two frames of separated interferometric patterns. This approach facilitates straightforward optical alignment, expands measurement ranges, accelerates data acquisition, and simplifies data processing for dual-wavelength interferometry. Consequently, it enables online shape measurement of large dynamic samples with rough surfaces.

Abstract Background Signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) is an intracelluar transcriotion factor and NLRP3 (Nod-like receptor containing a pyrin domain 3) is a component of NLRP3 inflammasome in pyroptotic cells. There was increased activation of STAT6 and expression of NLRP3 in mice with murine acute lung injury (ALI). However, it is unknown their roles in the development of murine ALI. We in this study, investigated the effects of STAT6 signaling on murine ALI and pyroptosis in STAT6 knock-out (KO) mice and macrophages. Results STAT6 was activated in the lung tissues of mice 2 days after intratracheal treatmemt with 5 mg/kg LPS. Lack of STAT6 expression in KO mice induced more severe lung inflammation, associated with elevated neutrophil influx and expression of TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-1beta in the inflamed lung tissues. In addition, the expression of NLRP3, ASC (apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD), p-p38 MAPK (p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase) and ratio of LC3-II/I (microtubule-associated protein-1 light chain-3) was increased, accompanied with the increased polarization of Siglec-F(−) subtype macrophages in KO mice with ALI. Further studies in bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) revealed that lack of STAT6 increased the expression of NLRP3 and p-p38 MAPK, in association with elevated expression of TNF-alpha, IL-1beta and Calreticulin in LPS-treated KO BMDMs. Conclusions Lack of STAT6 exacerbated murine ALI through improving the expression of NLRP3 and activation of p38 MAPK in macrophages. STAT6 has an immune suppressive role in the development of ALI and would be a promising therapeutic target in the treatment of ALI and possibly among patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Abstract Background Respiratory fungal exposure is known to be associated with various allergic pulmonary disorders. Eosinophils have been implicated in tissue homeostasis of allergic inflammation as both destructive effector cells and immune regulators. What contributions eosinophils have in Aspergillus fumigatus (Af)-induced allergic lung inflammation is worthy of investigating. Methods We established the Af-exposed animal asthmatic model using eosinophil-deficient mice, ∆dblGATA1 mice. Airway inflammation was assessed by histopathological examination and total cell count of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). The protein level in BALF and lung mRNA level of type 2 cytokines IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 were detected by ELISA and qRT-PCR. We further studied the involvement of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, apoptosis, and autophagy by western blots, qRT-PCR, immunofluorescence, TUNEL, or immunohistochemistry. RNA-Seq analysis was utilized to analyze the whole transcriptome of Af-exposed ∆dblGATA1 mice. Results Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and periodic acid–Schiff staining (PAS) showed that airway inflammation and mucus production were alleviated in Af-challenged ∆dblGATA1 mice compared with wild-type controls. The protein and mRNA expressions of IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 were reduced in the BALF and lung tissues in Af-exposed ∆dblGATA1 mice. The results demonstrated that the significantly increased ER stress markers (GRP78 and CHOP) and apoptosis executioner caspase proteases (cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-7) in Af-exposed wild-type mice were all downregulated remarkably in the lungs of ∆dblGATA1 mice with Af challenge. In addition, the lung autophagy in Af-exposed ∆dblGATA1 mice was found elevated partially, manifesting as higher expression of LC3-II/LC3-I and beclin1, lower p62, and downregulated Akt/mTOR pathway compared with Af-exposed wild-type mice. Additionally, lung RNA-seq analysis of Af-exposed ∆dblGATA1 mice showed that biological processes about chemotaxis of lymphocytes, neutrophils, or eosinophils were enriched but without statistical significance. Conclusions In summary, eosinophils play an essential role in the pathogenesis of Af-exposed allergic lung inflammation, whose deficiency may have relation to the attenuation of type 2 immune response, alleviation of ER stress and apoptosis, and increase of autophagy. These findings suggest that anti-eosinophils therapy may provide a promising direction for fungal-induced allergic pulmonary diseases.

Ptychography is a lensless imaging technique that is capable of reconstructing an object and illumination simultaneously by scanning the object at several positions with respect to a localized illumination beam. It has emerged as a powerful tool with applications ranging from high resolution imaging to optical metrology. A precise image reconstruction in ptychography is of utmost importance in several applications. An error in the measurement of the object–detector distance was found to affect the reliability of the reconstructed probe and the object. Several axial distance correction algorithms have been proposed to address the issue. However, the additional axial distance correction increases the complexity of the reconstruction algorithm. In this study, a detailed theoretical analysis of the relationship between the reconstructed images and the object–detector distance error is presented. It shows that high resolution object and probe images can still be reconstructed without an axial distance correction algorithm. The theoretical analysis is quantitatively studied by numerical simulations and experimental results.

Soluble signal regulatory protein-alpha (SIRP-alpha) is elevated in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of mice with lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI). To define the role of soluble SIRP-alpha in the pathogenesis of ALI, we established murine ALI in wild-type (WT) and SIRP-alpha knock-out (KO) mice by intratracheal administration of LPS. The results indicated that lack of SIRP-alpha significantly reduced the pathogenesis of ALI, in association with attenuated lung inflammation, infiltration of neutrophils and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in mice. In addition, lack of SIRP-alpha reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS-treated bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) from KO mice, accompanied with improved macrophage phagocytosis. Blockade of soluble SIRP-alpha activity in ALI BAL by anti-SIRP-alpha antibody (aSIRP) effectively reduced the expression of TNF-alpha and IL-6 mRNA transcripts and proteins, improved macrophage phagocytosis in vitro. In addition, lack of SIRP-alpha reduced activation of Src homology 2 domain-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 1 (SHP-1) and improved activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (STAT3) and STAT6. Suppression of SHP-1 activity by tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor 1 (TPI-1) increased activation of STAT3 and STAT6, and improved macrophage phagocytosis, that was effectively reversed by STAT3 and STAT6 inhibitors. Thereby, SIRP-alpha suppressed macrophage phagocytosis through activation of SHP-1, subsequently inhibiting downstream STAT3 and STAT6 signaling. Lack of SIRP-alpha attenuated murine ALI possibly through increasing phagocytosis, and improving STAT3 and STAT6 signaling in macrophages. SIRP-alpha would be promising biomarker and molecular target in the treatment of murine ALI and patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Abstract Background Glucocorticoid (GC) insensitivity is an important feature of severe and fatal asthma. Oxidative stress can induce phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) activation, contributing to the development of GC insensitivity in chronic airway diseases. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of PI3K in the pathogenesis of severe asthma remains unknown. Methods We isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 34 participants (12 patients with mild/moderate asthma, 10 patients with severe asthma, and 12 control subjects). H2O2 was used to stimulate the human macrophage line U937 to mimic the oxidative stress status in severe asthma. The ability of candidate compounds, namely, azithromycin, PI3K inhibitors (BEZ235 and LY294002) and a p38 MAPK inhibitor (BIRB796), to ameliorate GC insensitivity in severe asthma was evaluated. In this paper, a phase retrieval method is proposed to reconstruct the high-quality image free from undesired terms in on-axis digital holography (DH) with modified coherent diffraction imaging (MCDI). A random phase plate (RPP) is applied to generate a modulated diffraction pattern which forms an on-axis digital hologram with a plane reference wave, and a proper iterative algorithm is designed to reconstruct high-quality object information from both on-axis digital hologram and modulated diffraction pattern. Numerical simulations and experiments prove that both modulus and phase distributions can be accurately reconstructed within 100 iterations while the undesired twin image and zero-order diffraction can be effectively removed, thus demonstrating the feasibility of the suggested method.

Surfactant protein D (SP-D) plays an important role in innate and adaptive immune responses. In this study, we found that the expression of total and de-oligomerized SP-D was significantly elevated in mice with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI). To investigate the role of the lower oligomeric form of SP-D in the pathogenesis of ALI, we treated bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) with ALI-derived bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and found that SP-D in ALI BAL predominantly bound to calreticulin (CALR) on macrophages, subsequently increasing the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and expression of interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IL-10, and CD80. However, anti-SP-D (aSP-D) and anti-calreticulin (aCALR) pretreatment reversed the SP-D binding and activation of macrophages induced by ALI BAL or de-oligomerized recombinant murine SP-D (rSP-D). Lack of signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)6 in STAT6-/- macrophages resulted in resistance to suppression by aCALR. Further studies in an ALI mouse model showed that blockade of pulmonary SP-D by intratracheal (i.t.), but not intraperitoneal (i.p.), administration of aSP-D attenuated the severity of ALI, accompanied by lower neutrophil infiltrates and expression of IL-1beta and IL-6. Furthermore, i.t. administration of de-oligomerized rSP-D exacerbated the severity of ALI in association with more pro-inflammatory CD45+Siglec-F(-) M1 subtype macrophages and production of IL-6, TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-18. The results indicated that SP-D in the lungs of murine ALI was de-oligomerized and participated in the pathogenesis of ALI by predominantly binding to CALR on macrophages and subsequently activating the pro-inflammatory downstream signaling pathway. Targeting de-oligomerized SP-D is a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of ALI and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

A nonlinear robust control method for the trajectory tracking of the underwater vehicle and manipulator system that operates in the presence of external current disturbances is proposed using double closed-loop integral sliding mode control. The designed controller uses a double closed-loop control structure to track the desired trajectory in the joint space of the underwater vehicle and manipulator system, and its inner and outer loop systems use integral sliding surface to enhance the robustness of the whole system. Then, the continuous switching mode based on hyperbolic tangent function is used instead of the traditional discontinuous switching mode to reduce the chattering of the control input of the underwater vehicle and manipulator system. In addition, the control method proposed in this article does not need to estimate the uncertainties of the underwater vehicle and manipulator system control system through online identification, but also can ensure the robustness of the underwater vehicle and manipulator system motion control in underwater environment. Therefore, it is easier to be implemented on the embedded platform of the underwater vehicle and manipulator system and applied to the actual marine operation tasks. At last, the stability of the control system is proved by the Lyapunov theory, and its effectiveness and feasibility are verified by the simulation experiments in MATLAB software.

Summary: Fractals are a series of intricate patterns with aesthetic, mathematic, and philosophic significance. The Sierpiński triangles have been known for more than one hundred years, but only recently discrete shape-persistent low-generation (mainly ST-1) fractal supramolecules have been realized. Herein, we report a retro-assembly pathway to the nanometer-scale, supra-macromolecular second-generation Sierpiński triangle and its third-generation saturated counterpart (Pascal's triangle). These gigantic triangular assemblies are unambiguously confirmed by NMR, DOSY, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, TEM, and AFM analyses. Notably, the dense-packed counterions of these discrete triangular architectures could further form supramolecular hydro-gels in water. This work not only provides a fundamental chemical pathway to explore various giant supramolecular constructs and further overcome the synthetic limitation of complicated molecular fractals, but also presents a new type of supramolecular hydro-gels with potential in controlled release applications.

As a non-interferometric method, the transport of intensity equation (TIE) method suits for quantitative phase imaging with the commercial microscope platform, especially those higher order TIE approaches which can realize precise phase retrieval by eliminating undesired higher order derivatives are widely used. However, these approaches are mostly adopted separately without considering their phase retrieval precision in various noise levels. In this paper, we first compared these classical higher order TIE approaches through theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and experiments. Then, based on the quantitative comparisons mainly focusing on their phase retrieval accuracy and noise suppression capability, we determine the application scope corresponding to different noise levels of each higher order TIE approach. Finally, in order to deal with different noisy cases, we design the hybrid higher order TIE application, in which the specific higher order TIE approach is selected for phase retrieval according to the precise noise estimation, and the performance of the hybrid higher order TIE application is tested by both the numerical simulations and the experiments, proving it can perform high-quality phase imaging by balancing the tradeoff between the phase retrieval accuracy and the noise influence. The paper not only provides a systematic reference for analysis and comparisons on different higher order TIE approaches, but also proposes the hybrid application for noise adaptive phase imaging, which can be a potential tool in biological observations and medical diagnostics.

Abstract Background SOCS3 (suppressor of cytokine signaling 3) is a negative regulator of JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway and participates in the regulation of lung inflammation in a mouse model with acute lung injury (ALI). However, it is not well understood how SOCS3 regulates lung inflammation in the ALI mouse model. Method In the present study, we investigated the effects of SOCS3 on modulation of Ly6C(+) monocyte phenotypes in a mouse model with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI. Conditional SOCS3(Lyz2cre) mice with myeloid cell-restricted depletion of SOCS3 gene were created by breeding transgenic Lyz2Cre mice with SOCS3(fl/fl) mice. Wilde-type (WT) and SOCS3(Lyz2cre) mice were intratracheal instilled with 5 mg/kg LPS for 2 days. Lung, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and blood were collected for analysis by flow cytometry, ELISA, qRT-PCR and Western blot analysis. Results The studies in the ALI mouse model revealed that myeloid cell-restricted SOCS3 deficiency exacerbated the severity of ALI as compared to the WT mice. The increased severity of ALI in SOCS3-deficient mice was associated with higher populations of neutrophils, T lymphocytes and Ly6C(+) monocytes in the inflamed lung tissues. In addition, CCR2 and CXCL15 were elevated, and accompanied by greater expression and activation of STAT3 in the lung of SOCS3-deficient mice. SOCS3-deficient bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) expressed a higher amount of TNF-alpha, and adoptive transfer of the SOCS3-deficient Ly6C(+) BMDMs into WT mice enhanced the severity of ALI than adoptive transfer of WT control BMDMs. However, depletion of Ly6C(+) circulating monocytes by anti-Ly6C(+) neutralizing antibody moderately attenuated neutrophil infiltration and resulted in lower prevalence of Ly6C(+) cells in the lung of treated mice. Conclusion Myeloid cell-restricted lack of SOCS3 induced more severe ALI through modulation of Ly6C(+) subtype macrophages. The results provide insight into a new role of SOCS3 in modulation of Ly6C(+) monocyte phenotypes and provide a novel therapeutic strategy for ALI by molecular intervention of macrophages subtypes.

Calreticulin (CALR) has anti-tumor effects by increasing dendritic cell maturation and tumor antigen presentation. However, whether CALR affects macrophages and modulates progression of acute respiratory distress syndrome/acute lung injury (ARDS/ALI) remains unknown. In this study, we discovered that CALR protein was highly expressed in the mice with LPS-induced ALI and CALR expression level was positively correlated to the severity of ALI. Commercial anti-CALR antibody (aCALR) can neutralize recombinant CALR (rCALR) and suppress the expression of TNF-alpha and IL-6 in the rCALR-treated macrophages. Blocking CALR activity by intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of aCALR significantly suppressed ALI, accompanied with lower total cell counts, neutrophil and T cell infiltration in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and lung tissues. The expression of CXCL15, IL-6, IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, and CALR were significantly reduced, in association with more polarization of Siglec F+CD206+M2 subtype macrophages in the aCALR-treated mice. Pre-depletion of circulating monocytes did not abolish the aCALR-mediated suppression of ALI. Further analysis in bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) showed that aCALR suppressed the expression of CD80, IL-6, IL-1beta, IL-18, NLRP3, and p-p38 MAPK; but enhanced the expression of CD206 and IL-10. In addition, we observed more expression and phosphorylation of STAT6 in the aCALR-treated BMDM. Lack of STAT6 resulted in comparable and slightly higher expression of CALR, TNF-alpha and IL-6 in the aCALR-treated STAT6-/- BMDMs than the untreated cells. Therefore, we conclude that CALR is a novel biomarker in the evaluation of ALI. Blocking CALR activity by aCALR effectively suppressed ALI independent of circulating monocytes. Siglec F+CD206+M2 subtype macrophages and p38 MAPK/STAT6 signaling pathway played important role in the immune regulation of aCALR. Blocking CALR activity is a promising therapeutic approach in the treatment of ARDS/ALI.

Inhaled glucocorticoids form the mainstay of asthma treatment because of their anti-inflammatory effects in the lung. Exposure to the air pollutant ozone (O3) exacerbates chronic airways disease. We and others showed that presence of the epithelial-derived surfactant protein-D (SP-D) is important in immunoprotection against inflammatory changes including those induced by O3 inhalation in the airways. SP-D synthesis requires glucocorticoids. We hypothesized here that O3 exposure impairs glucocorticoid responsiveness (including SP-D production) in allergic airway inflammation. The effects of O3 inhalation and glucocorticoid treatment were studied in a mouse model of allergic asthma induced by sensitization and challenge with Aspergillus fumigatus (Af) in vivo. The role of O3 and glucocorticoids in regulation of SP-D expression was investigated in A549 and primary human type II alveolar epithelial cells in vitro. Budesonide inhibited airway hyperreactivity, eosinophil counts in the lung and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and CCL11, IL-13, and IL-23p19 release in the BAL of mice sensitized and challenged with Af (p < 0.05). The inhibitory effects of budesonide were attenuated on inflammatory changes and were completely abolished on airway hyperreactivity after O3 exposure of mice sensitized and challenged with Af. O3 stimulated release of pro-neutrophilic mediators including CCL20 and IL-6 into the airways and impaired the inhibitory effects of budesonide on CCL11, IL-13 and IL-23. O3 also prevented budesonide-induced release of the immunoprotective lung collectin SP-D into the airways of allergen-challenged mice. O3 had a bi-phasic direct effect with early (48 h) activation of SP-D mRNA (sftpd) in vitro. Dexamethasone and budesonide induced sftpd transcription and translation in human type II alveolar epithelial cells in a glucocorticoid receptor and STAT3 (an IL-6 responsive transcription factor) dependent manner. Our study indicates that O3 exposure counteracts the effects of budesonide on airway inflammation, airway hyperreactivity, and SP-D production. We speculate that impairment of SP-D expression may contribute to the acute O3-induced airway inflammation. Asthmatics exposed to high ambient O3 levels may become less responsive to glucocorticoid treatment during acute exacerbations.

Based on the wavefront sensing and propagation, the wavefront-based autofocus approach is proposed for potentially adopted in rapid autofocusing since it can precisely locate the focal plane but only requiring much fewer multi-focal image captures. However, due to the much time spent in serial numerical calculation and analysis, this method fails to improve the autofocusing efficiency as expected. In order to further accelerate the autofocusing speed, we improve this method by adopting the parallel computing in the numerical wavefront propagation and focal analysis procedures based on the graphics processing unit (GPU). Proved by experiments relying on our self-built system, the time consuming for autofocusing can be drastically reduced within 1 s, besides, it can guarantee extremely high focal determination accuracy in various sample cases, indicating that the GPU aided wavefront-based method can be future adopted in commercial microscopes for precise and rapid autofocusing.

The recently developed Light Field Moment Imaging (LMI) is adopted to show the stereoscopic structure of the sample studied in Coherent Diffractive Imaging (CDI), where 3D image were always generated with complicated experimental procedure such as the rotation of the sample and time-consuming computation. The animation of large view angle can be generated with LMI very quickly, and the 3D structure of sample can be shown vividly. This method can find many applications for the coherent diffraction imaging with x-ray and electron beams, where a glimpse of the hierarchical structure required and the quick and simple 3D view of object is sufficient. The feasibility of this method is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally with a recently developed CDI method called Ptychographic Iterative Engine.

We design a multifunctional THz polarization modulation meta-mirror integrated with polarization conversion and dichroism functions switched by temperature and voltage. The meta-mirror is composed of two-layered graphene metasurfaces and a layer of vanadium dioxide (VO2) on a gold film substrate. Linear-to-linear polarization conversion and linear dichroism (LD) can be switched by temperature control in the VO2 film and Fermi level adjustments in the graphene metasurfaces, where the polarization conversion ratio (PCR) is higher than 0.9 in the range of 2.89 THz to 4.02 THz, LD value reached a maximum of 0.6 at 3.84 THz, and linear-to-circular polarization conversion and circular dichroism (CD) can also be tuned with ellipticity higher than 0.9 in the range of 2.32 THz to 2.69 THz and CD value as high as 0.71 at 2.45 THz. The proposed meta-mirror is the first THz metamaterial device integrating four switchable functions, including linear-to-linear polarization conversion, linear-tocircular polarization conversion, linear dichroism and circular dichroism.
