Purpose: To provide a comprehensive investigation of the optical quality across the visual field for current mainstream types of refractive surgeries. Methods: Sixty eyes from 60 adults who received refractive surgery of either femtosecond laser–assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK), Q-value guided customized laser in situ keratomileusis (Q-LASIK), small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), or Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) (STAAR Surgical) implantation were included in this study. Refraction and optical aberrations from a visual field of horizontal 60° (from temporal 30° to nasal 30°) and vertical 36° (from superior 20° to inferior 16°) were measured using a custom-made Hartmann-Shack wavefront peripheral sensor. Refractive error, higher order aberrations, point spread function (PSF), and Strehl ratio were compared among these groups prior to and after the surgical procedures, respectively. Results: All types of surgical procedures achieved an almost plano refraction in the central retina. This was also the case in the peripheral retina for the three types of laser refractive surgeries. However, residual peripheral relative hyperopic defocus was observed after ICL implantation. In all groups prior to the surgery, PSFs showed increasing distortion with eccentricity and arrow-like shape pointing toward the central fovea in the periphery in diagonals. Degradation of the PSFs was diminished by all three types of laser refractive surgeries, whereas ICL implantation made the peripheral distortion more prominent. Conclusions: Although ICL implantation produced a similar impact on refractive correction and objective optical quality in the central vision compared with other laser refractive surgeries, its outcome on the peripheral optics is different. The residual refractive error and retinal image quality of the corrected eyes were also investigated.Methods: For 120 lenses, internal lens stress was measured using a newly designed digital strain viewer (colmascope). Sixty myopic adults (120 eyes) were recruited. The effects of internal lens stress on residual refraction and retinal image quality were evaluated using OPD Scan III. The results were compared between loose and tight mounting and between the right and left eyes.Results: Significant differences were observed among nine lens zones in both the right and left lenses, regardless of the mounting state (P < 0.001). The differences were mainly derived from the five vertically arranged zones (P < 0.05). Significant differences in internal lens stress were observed between the right and left lenses (P < 0.05). No significant differences in central residual refractive error and retinal image quality of the corrected eyes were found between the loose- and tight-mounted lenses.Conclusion: The applied forces generated by the rim screw changed the peripheral optical performance of the mounted myopia lenses but exerted only negligible impacts on the central residual refractive error and visual image quality.Keywords: myopia, colmascope, internal stress, optical performance, retina image quality

Atropine has been proven to be effective in retarding myopia progression. However, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Our purpose was to detect morphological and functional changes caused by atropine during myopic inhibition. Twenty 2-week-old guinea pigs were randomly assigned to either the saline group (n = 10) or the atropine group (n = 10). Form-deprived myopia (FDM) and intravitreal injections were applied on the right eyes. The injections were given every 3 days, lasting for 2 weeks. The left eyes served as control. Ocular refraction, axial length, retinal, and choroidal thickness were collected at the start and the end of the experiment. Retinal function was evaluated via full-field electroretinogram (ERG) at the end of treatment. The interocular differences (experimental eye minus control eye) of refraction error (RE), vitreous chamber depth (VCD), and axial length (AL) in the saline group were significantly greater than those in the atropine group (RE, VCD: P < .001, AL: P < .0001). The differences in choroidal thickness between the two groups did not reach statistical significance. However, a decreasing trend of choroidal thickness was observed in the saline group but not in the atropine group. Furthermore, the interocular differences of total retinal and outer retinal thickness in the atropine group were much thicker than in the saline group (P < .001 and P < .01, respectively). The treatment did not affect inner retinal thickness. In photopic ERG, the atropine-treated FDM eyes showed significantly greater a-wave amplitudes compared to the saline group. During the process of inhibiting FDM, atropine showed an effect on the outer retina, most likely on the cones, in guinea pigs.

The purpose of this study was to compare the reliability and acceptability of tele-controlled subjective refraction supported by RDx, a new technique that involves optical software designed for controlling phoropters remotely, to traditional subjective refraction.Sixty-five participants underwent tele-controlled subjective refraction and traditional subjective refraction randomly and nine of them underwent the second tele-controlled subjective refraction measurement on the same day. After their examinations, we distributed a validated satisfaction questionnaire to each participant. The elapsed time taken for refraction, sphere (S), cylinder (C), spherical equivalent (SE), vertical and oblique cylindrical vectors (J0 and J45), and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were compared. Age and refractive error type were included as covariates. Bland-Altman analysis was used to assess the agreement between both methods of refraction.The mean age was 20.5 ± 5.9 years for all participants (aged 9 to 40 years); 57% were female participants. The repeatability analysis of tele-controlled method showed no significant differences for all parameters (P0.05). We found no statistical differences (P0.05) between tele-controlled subjective refraction and traditional subjective refraction for all parameters in either group. The mean difference and 95% limits of agreement for SE, J0, and J45 were -0.03 ± 0.36 diopters (D), -0.00 ± 0.57 D, and -0.01 ± 0.79 D, respectively. The tele-controlled method took more time to perform than the traditional one (P0.05). Completed questionnaires were returned by 55 participants (85%), and they showed high satisfaction and acceptance of the tele-controlled method (98%).Tele-controlled subjective refraction results agreed with traditional subjective refraction for all refraction components except for cylinder vectors. In addition, the broad acceptability of tele-controlled subjective refraction means practicability in clinical practice.The RDx-based tele-controlled method can provide an alternative to subjective refraction, especially in areas that lack experienced optometrists.

To develop an approach of combining convolution neural network and graph convolution network to predict the progression of myopia. The working distance (WD) and light intensity (LI) of three hundred and seventeen children were recorded by Clouclip. The spherical equivalent refraction (SER) of the children were recorded by ophthalmologists. The data of WD and LI were filtered and mapped into a two-dimensional WD-LI space. The percentage of time (PoT) falling into each pixel in the space was calculated for each subject. The space of each subject can be thought of as an image and it is the input of our neural network model that combining several convolution layers and graph convolution layers. The output of the model is the SER. With tenfold cross validation, the validation error is 0.79 D when the L1 loss function is used. This study provides an innovative way to predict the development of myopia by WD and LI. The convolution neural network and graph convolution network are used to predict the myopia with WD and LI simultaneously, which has not been done before.

Peripheral refraction has been studied for decades; however, its detection and description are somehow simplistic and limited. Therefore, their role in visual function and refractive correction, as well as myopia control, is not completely understood. This study aims to establish a database of two-dimensional (2D) peripheral refraction profiles in adults and explore the features for different central refraction values. A group of 479 adult subjects were recruited. Using an open-view Hartmann–Shack scanning wavefront sensor, their right naked eyes were measured. The overall features of the relative peripheral refraction maps showed myopic defocus, slight myopic defocus, and hyperopic defocus in the hyperopic and emmetropic groups, in the mild myopic group, and in other myopic groups, respectively. Defocus deviations with central refraction vary in different regions. The defocus asymmetry between the upper and lower retinas within 16° increased with the increase of central myopia. By characterizing the variation of peripheral defocus with central myopia, these results provide rich information for possible individual corrections and lens design.

AimTo reassess the association between near work, outdoor exposure and myopia in children through an objective approach.MethodsEighty-six children (10.13±0.48 years) were asked to wear Clouclip, a newly developed wearable device that is able to measure working distance and eye-level illuminance, for a complete week to obtain information on near work and outdoor exposure. The mean daily Clouclip wearing time was 11.72±1.14 hour. The spherical equivalent refraction was determined by cycloplegic autorefraction.ResultsThe myopic children were found to be exposed to light intensities >3000 lux (0.68±0.50 hour vs 1.02±0.53 hour, p=0.012) and >5000 lux (0.42±0.35 hour vs 0.63±0.31 hour, p=0.004) for shorter durations on average each day than the non-myopic children. Additionally, the myopic children spent more time on average each day on activities at a distance of 3000 lux (OR=0.27, 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.72, p=0.009); >5000 lux (OR=0.11, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.56, p=0.008)) and a working distance of 3000 lux (OR=1.17, 95% CI: 1.09 to 1.86, p=0.038) or in that of >5000 lux (OR=1.12, 95% CI: 1.03 to 1.77, p=0.046)) were the independent protective factors and risk factors, respectively.ConclusionThe current study provides novel evidence, based on objective data, to support the association between the intensity of near work, light intensity and myopia. However, the causality and the dose-effect relationship need to be investigated further.

Purpose Given the robust effectiveness of inhibiting myopia progression, orthokeratology has gained increasing popularity worldwide. However, identifying the boundary and the center of reshaped corneal area (i.e., treatment zone) is the main challenging task in evaluating the performance of orthokeratology. Here we present automated deep learning algorithms to solve the challenges. Methods A total of 6328 corneal topographical maps, including 2996 axial subtractive maps and 3332 tangential subtractive maps, were collected from 2044 myopic patients who received orthokeratology. The boundary and the center of the treatment zones were annotated by experts as ground truths using axial subtractive maps and tangential subtractive maps, respectively. The algorithms based on neural network structures of fully convolutional networks (FCNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were developed to automatically identify the boundary and the center of the treatment zone, respectively. Results The algorithm of FCNs identified the treatment zone boundaries with an accuracy intersection over union (IoU) of 0.90 ± 0.06 (mean ± SD; range, 0.60–0.97). The algorithm of CNNs also identified the treatment zone centers with an average deviation of 0.22 ± 0.22 mm (range, 0.01–1.66 mm). Conclusions These results show that a deep learning–based solution is able to provide an automatic and accurate tool to accomplish the two main challenges of orthokeratology. Translational Relevance Deep learning in orthokeratology can shorten the time while maintaining accurate results in clinical practice, which enables clinicians to help more patients daily.

This retrospective study investigated circulating immune cell alteration in patients with myopic retinopathy. Blood test results and demographic and ocular information of 392 myopic patients and 129 emmetropia controls who attended Changsha Aier Eye Hospital from May 2017 to April 2022 were used in this study. Compared with emmetropia, the percentages of neutrophils and basophils and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio were significantly higher in myopic patients, whereas the percentages of monocytes and lymphocytes and the counts of lymphocytes and eosinophils were significantly lower in myopic patients. After adjusting for age and hypertension/diabetes, the difference remained. Interestingly, the platelet counts were significantly lower in myopic patients after the adjustments. Further subgroup analysis using multivariable linear regression showed that higher levels of neutrophils, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and platelet/lymphocyte ratio, lower levels of monocytes, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and platelets, were related to myopic peripheral retinal degeneration (mPRD) and posterior staphyloma (PS). A higher level of basophils was linked to myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV). Our results suggest that higher levels of circulating neutrophils and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, lower monocytes, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and platelets are related to mild myopic retinopathy. A higher level of circulating basophils is related to the severe form of myopic retinopathy, such as mCNV.

Background: Myopia is the second leading cause of visual impairment globally. Myopia can induce sight-threatening retinal degeneration and the underlying mechanism remains poorly defined. We generated a model of myopia-induced early-stage retinal degeneration in guinea pigs and investigated the mechanism of action. Methods: The form-deprivation-induced myopia (FDM) was induced in the right eyes of 2~3-week-old guinea pigs using a translucent balloon for 15 weeks. The left eye remained untreated and served as a self-control. Another group of untreated age-matched animals was used as naïve controls. The refractive error and ocular biometrics were measured at 3, 7, 9, 12 and 15 weeks post-FDM induction. Visual function was evaluated by electroretinography. Retinal neurons and synaptic structures were examined by confocal microscopy of immunolabelled retinal sections. The total RNAs were extracted from the retinas and processed for RNA sequencing analysis. Results: The FDM eyes presented a progressive axial length elongation and refractive error development. After 15 weeks of intervention, the average refractive power was −3.40 ± 1.85 D in the FDM eyes, +2.94 ± 0.59 D and +2.69 ± 0.56 D in the self-control and naïve control eyes, respectively. The a-wave amplitude was significantly lower in FDM eyes and these eyes had a significantly lower number of rods, secretagogin+ bipolar cells, and GABAergic amacrine cells in selected retinal areas. RNA-seq analysis showed that 288 genes were upregulated and 119 genes were downregulated in FDM retinas compared to naïve control retinas. In addition, 152 genes were upregulated and 12 were downregulated in FDM retinas compared to self-control retinas. The KEGG enrichment analysis showed that tyrosine metabolism, ABC transporters and inflammatory pathways were upregulated, whereas tight junction, lipid and glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis were downregulated in FDM eyes. Conclusions: The long-term (15-week) FDM in the guinea pig models induced an early-stage retinal degeneration. The dysregulation of the tyrosine metabolism and inflammatory pathways may contribute to the pathogenesis of myopia-induced retinal degeneration.

To validate a novel wearable device that can measure both viewing distance and light exposure, Clouclip, and compare questionnaire estimates regarding near-work and outdoor time with the objective measures obtained using Clouclip.Fifteen Clouclips were selected to measure different distances and levels of illuminance. With each Clouclip, five measurements at different distances and light intensities were measured and recorded. Eighty participants wore Clouclips for a week and completed an activity questionnaire afterwards.The intra- and inter-Clouclip coefficients were 1.00 and 0.99 for measuring distance and 1.00 and 1.00 for illuminance, respectively. Within the measurement limit, the maximum relative error was 2.07% for distance and 2.23% for illuminance. Assuming that30 cm was the typical distance for near-work activities and1000 Lux was the typical cut-off for outdoor environments, the questionnaire showed a trend of overestimation for both. The greatest overestimation of near-work occurred during the school period [Questionnaire: 4.73 hr (4.73, 5.07) versus Clouclip: 2.16 hr (1.74, 2.78); p 0.01]. The greatest overestimation of outdoor activity also occurred during the school period [Questionnaire: 1.60 hr (1.33, 1.85) versus Clouclip: 1.21 hr (0.96, 1.50); p 0.01]. Based on Clouclip, the total time spent outdoors was estimated to be 1.55 hr on school days, of which 0.34 hr occurred after school. For weekend days, however, the duration was only 0.17 hr.Clouclip had excellent precision and accuracy. Although the agreement between the questionnaire and Clouclip was relatively poor, they were able to complement each other to provide a more logical and feasible assessment of exposure to near-work and outdoor activity. Indoor-oriented lifestyles were found to predominate in Chinese children.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the two-dimensional peripheral refraction in fellow eyes of patients with isomyopia and anisomyopia. Methods Sixty-eight young adults were recruited, including 25 isomyopes with interocular differences (IODs) of foveal refraction < 1.00 D and 43 anisomyopes with IOD > 1.50 D. Peripheral refraction across an area of the visual field of 60° × 36° with a resolution of 1° was measured using a custom-made Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. The retinal area was divided into 3 × 3 zones for comparison between the fellow eyes. Results There was no difference of refraction in all corresponding zones between the fellow eyes in the isomyopic group (all P > 0.05). The IODs between more myopic (MM) eyes and less myopic (LM) eyes in the anisomyopic group ranged from −1.40 to approximately −2.46 D (all P

Orthokeratology (O-K) is a common procedure that uses rigid contact lenses to reshape the cornea while worn overnight. Beyond the correction of refractive error, it has been suggested that this approach can also be used to reduce myopia progression, possibly because it induces changes in peripheral optics. As this hypothesis remains unproven, the aim of the present study was to explore changes in peripheral retinal optical quality in a group of myopic children following O-K treatment. We provide a comprehensive description of optical characteristics in a group of myopes before and after achieving stable corneal reshaping using overnight O-K lenses. These characteristics extended across the central visual field (60° horizontal x 36° vertical) as measured with a custom Hartmman-Shack wavefront sensor. After corneal reshaping, peripheral refraction was found to be asymmetrically distributed, with a myopic relative refraction of approximately 3D in the temporal retina. Astigmatism and higher order aberrations also increased in the temporal side. Based on corneal topography following treatment, subjects were divided into two groups: Centred Treatment (CT, decentration ∈ [−0.5 + 0.5] mm) and Slightly Decentred Treatment (subjects with more decentred lenses). The process was also modelled by ray-tracing simulation. The results indicate that increased myopia in the temporal retina is caused by the decentration of lenses towards the temporal side. Peripheral optics differ significantly following O-K lens treatment, but further research is required to determine whether this is likely to affect myopia progression.

Synopsis Both optimal stereoacuity and integration time to achieve that are impaired in patients with intermittent exotropia. The deterioration of stereoacuity is more revealing since it correlates well with exotropia control score. Background Despite the periodic misalignment of two eyes, some intermittent exotropia (IXT) patients exhibit normal stereoacuity, particularly when evaluated with static tests. It is not clear if the temporal integration process of stereopsis is altered in IXT patients, thus warranting further research. Methods IXT patients (n = 29) and age-matched normal controls (n = 36) were recruited. Static stereopsis was measured with the Titmus stereoacuity test. In computer-generated random dots tests, stereoacuity was measured with a stimuli presentation duration varying from 100 to 1,200 ms. And the relationship between stereoacuity and stimuli duration was fitted into a quadratic model. Optimal stereoacuity was achieved when fitted curve flattened and the critical integration time was the duration needed to achieve optimal stereoacuity. Results IXT patients were not found to differ significantly from control subjects under the Titmus test, while the Random Dots stereotest showed significantly worse optimal stereoacuity and significantly longer critical integration time. Multiple regression analysis showed that age (R = -4.83; P = 0.04) had statistically significant negative correlation on the critical integration time, age (R = -6.45; P = 0.047) and exotropia control scores (R = 60.71; P = 0.007) had statistically significant effects on optimal stereoacuity. Conclusion The temporal integration for stereopsis is impaired in IXT patients, requiring longer critical integration time to achieve elevated optimal stereoacuity.

We investigated the adaptability and acceptance of a novel spectacle lens design that was recently reported to achieve a significant antimyopia effect.A prospective, cross-over study.Twenty children were recruited to wear both Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) and single vision (SV) lens, with a random assignment of which type of lens was experienced first. For each type of lens, high and low contrast central distant visual acuity (VA) and high contrast mid-peripheral near VA were measured at both 500 lux and 50 lux ambient illuminance after 30 minutes' and a week's wearing of the lens. A self-developed questionnaire was applied to evaluate the visual discomfort at the 1-week visit. All quantitative data were analyzed by paired t test, while qualitative data were analyzed with the χCentral VA was not affected by DIMS lens compared with SV lens in all circumstances (all P.05). However, the mid-peripheral near VA was found to reduce by approximately 0.06 logarithm of minimal angle of resolution unit in 2 of 4 quadrants (500 lux; P.05) and in 3 quadrants (50 lux; P.05) for DIMS lenses. No improvement was detected in the 1-week visit. Mid-peripheral blurred vision was the main visual complaint, which was noticed only once or twice a day. Being aware of the average antimyopic efficacy, 90% of children subjects preferred DIMS lenses.Mid-peripheral vision through DIMS lenses was slightly affected compared with SV lenses. Otherwise, DIMS lenses received good tolerance and acceptance by Chinese children.

AIM: To investigate the effects of spectral composition and light intensity on natural refractive development in guinea pigs. METHODS: A total of 124 pigmented guinea pigs (2-week-old) were randomly assigned to three groups at high (Hi; 4000 lx), medium (Me; 400 lx) and low (Lo; 50 lx) light intensities under a 12:12 light/dark cycle for 6wk. Each group was subdivided into subgroups with the following spectra: broad spectrum Solux halogen light (BS), 600 nm above-filtered continuous spectrum (600F), 530 nm above-filtered continuous spectrum (530F), and 480 nm above-filtered continuous spectrum (480F; HiBS: n=10, Hi600F: n=10, Hi530F: n=10, Hi480F: n=10, MeBS: n=10, Me600F: n=10, Me530F: n=10, Me480F: n=10, LoBS: n=11, Lo600F: n=12, Lo530F: n=10, Lo480F: n=11). Refractive error, corneal curvature radius, and axial dimensions were determined by cycloplegic retinoscopy, photokeratometry, and A-scan ultrasonography before and after 2, 4, and 6wk of treatment. Average changes from both eyes in the ocular parameters and refractive error were compared among different subgroups. Purpose To develop a practical approach to quantify the exposure to environmental risk factors of myopia. Methods In total, 179 children (age, mean ± standard deviation [SD] 9.17 ± 0.52 years) were requested to wear Clouclip, designed to measure working distance (WD) and light intensity (LI), for a whole week. The spherical equivalent refraction (SER) was determined by cycloplegic autorefraction. The raw data of WD and LI were preprocessed through several steps, including data denoising, constructing a two-dimensional WD-LI space, and data sparseness disposing. Weighted linear regression was used to explore the relationship between WD/LI and SER. A novel parameter visual behaviour index (VBI) was developed to summarize the overall impact of WD/LI on SER. Results The mean ± SD SER of 179 participants was 0.22 ± 1.18 D. WD and LI were positively associated with SER. However, their magnitude of effect on SER varied with the relative level between them. When WD and LI were split up, the detrimental threshold was approximately 40 cm for WD and 6300 lux for LI. VBI was significantly positively associated with SER (β = 0.0623, R 2 = 0.031, P Conclusions The current study provides a novel approach to quantify environmental risk factors of myopia. Despite the complexity of the interaction between these risk factors and their impact on SER, this information can be summarized as one single-parameter VBI, which provides a useful tool to investigate the effect of environmental factors on myopia development and progression. Translational relevance We developed a novel approach to quantify environmental risk factors of myopia.

INTRODUCTION The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of an intervention for unhealthy visual behaviors of school-age children using a wearable device (Clouclip). METHOD The design was a self-controlled prospective study. Clouclip, with the vibration alert disabled, was first applied to measure baseline near-work behaviors in the first week. The vibration alert was then enabled to signal unhealthy visual behaviors (near-work distance 5 seconds, or near-work distance 45 minutes) for 3 weeks. Near-work behaviors were measured again at the first week and the first month after intervention, respectively. The changes in behaviors between the baseline and the first week and the first month after intervention were analyzed. RESULTS Sixty-seven subjects were eligible for this experiment (the mean age 10.45 ± 0.50 years, 34 boys). Children who logged sufficient wearing time (12.30 ± 0.18 hours on weekdays and 12.16 ± 0.23 hours on weekends) were included for analysis. The average daily near-work distance was significantly increased after the vibration intervention. The time ratio of near-work activity 30 minutes) were significantly decreased after the intervention. Although some of the effects were reversed with time following the intervention, some were observed to be maintained until the end of the observation period, and the improvement of the behaviors was more prominent in children who had a shorter near-work distance (

Dopamine is known to play an important role in the pathophysiological process of myopia development relevant to the ambient lighting, but it is still poorly understood about how lighting regulates dopamine and its interaction with dopamine receptors to mediate the pathogenic signal transduction leading to alterations of ocular globe and the pathogenesis of myopia. Many studies have highlighted changes of ocular dopamine amount in response to different lighting conditions, but little attention has been paid to the dopamine receptors during these processes. Here we examined the effects of different lighting exposures on the expression of dopamine receptors in rat R28 retinal precursor cells. R28 cells normally grown in dark were exposed to a low (10 lux) or high (500 lux) intensity of a source of LED white light (5000 K–6000 K) for 12 h and total RNA was isolated either immediately or after certain time continuous growing in dark. Both conventional and real-time RT-PCR were performed to determine the expression of all five different dopamine receptors in cells after treatments. While the transcripts of dopamine D2, D3, and D4 receptors were not detected in the total RNA preparations of all the cells, those of D1 and D5 receptors (DRD1 and DRD5) were induced by lighting in contrast to the dark control. Elevated levels of DRD1 and DRD5 mRNA returned back close to the original levels once the cells were maintained in dark after light exposures. Immunofluorescence microscopy using a specific antibody confirmed an increase in the immunoreactivity of DRD1 in the cells exposed to 500 lux lighting versus dark control. Notably, treatments of R28 cells with nanomolar dosages of dopamine (0–500 nM) directly downregulated expression of both DRD1 and DRD5, whereas haloperidol (0–50 nM), a DRD2 antagonist, significantly induced expression of DRD1. These results suggest that dopamine receptors in the retinal cells might actively respond to the environmental lighting to act as an important player in the activation of the dopaminergic system in the ocular structures relevant to the lighting-induced pathogenic development of myopia.

Purpose To compare light intensity and near-visual tasks objectively between rural and urban children. Methods Clouclip, a wearable device, was applied to assess metrics of these two factors in 78 fifth-grade students from an urban and from a rural school. Results The light intensity experienced by urban students was found significantly lower both in the school period (614.05 ± 178.77 vs. 918.41 ± 257.81 lux, P < 0.001) and on the weekend (444.53 ± 216.65 vs. 882.21 ± 536.67 lux, P < 0.001). The duration of exposure to bright light (>1000 lux) was also substantially shorter for urban students. Although no significant difference was found in near work–related behaviors during the school period and the weekend, for the after-school period the urban students had a shorter average viewing distance (30.94 ± 4.14 vs. 34.81 ± 3.93 cm, P < 0.001), a longer accumulated duration of near work (2.25 ± 0.53 vs. 1.95 ± 0.46 hours, P = 0.010), a greater time ratio of near work (56% ± 14% vs. 49% ± 14%, P = 0.045), and a greater time ratio of excessively close near work (49% ± 13% vs. 40% ± 12%, P = 0.001). Conclusions Our data indicate there were substantial differences in light exposure and near-work metrics between the two regions. The correlation between these differences and the discrepancy in regional myopia prevalence needs further investigation. Translational Relevance The objective quantification of these metrics might help explain the varied myopia prevalence among regions.

Oleanolic acid (OA) is a pentacyclic triterpenoid acid of natural abundance in plants which possesses important biological activities. However, its medicinal applications were severely impeded by the poor water solubility and resultant low bioavailability and potency. In this work, studies on solid inclusion complexes of OA with a series of amino-appended β-cyclodextrins (ACDs) were conducted in order to address this issue. These complexes were prepared by suspension method and were well characterized by NMR, SEM, XRD, TG, DSC and Zeta potential measurement. The 2:1 inclusion mode of ACDs/OA complexes was elucidated by elaborate 2D NMR (ROESY). Besides, water solubility of OA was dramatically promoted by inclusion complexation with ACDs. Moreover, in vitro anticancer activities of OA against human cancer cell lines HepG2, HT29 and HCT116 were significantly enhanced after formation of inclusion complexes, while the apoptotic response results indicated their induction of apoptosis of cancer cells. This could provide a novel approach to development of novel pharmaceutical formulations of OA.
