Abstract Background The management of anterior colliculus fractures in combination with deltoid ligament injuries is a topic of debate, and there is a need to improve surgical outcomes. The purpose of the present study was to describe the application of a modified double-row suture bridge technique and evaluate its early clinical outcomes in the management of anterior colliculus fracture combined with deltoid ligament injury. Methods From 2020 to 2022, 12 patients with anterior colliculus fracture combined with deltoid ligament injury were treated using a modified double-row suture bridge technique. Abstract Large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have demonstrated impressive capabilities in various tasks and attracted increasing interest as a natural language interface across many domains. Recently, large vision-language models (VLMs) that learn rich vision–language correlation from image–text pairs, like BLIP-2 and GPT-4, have been intensively investigated. However, despite these developments, the application of LLMs and VLMs in image quality assessment (IQA), particularly in medical imaging, remains unexplored. This is valuable for objective performance evaluation and potential supplement or even replacement of radiologists’ opinions. To this end, this study introduces IQAGPT, an innovative computed tomography (CT) IQA system that integrates image-quality captioning VLM with ChatGPT to generate quality scores and textual reports. First, a CT-IQA dataset comprising 1,000 CT slices with diverse quality levels is professionally annotated and compiled for training and evaluation. To better leverage the capabilities of LLMs, the annotated quality scores are converted into semantically rich text descriptions using a prompt template. Second, the image-quality captioning VLM is fine-tuned on the CT-IQA dataset to generate quality descriptions. The captioning model fuses image and text features through cross-modal attention. Third, based on the quality descriptions, users verbally request ChatGPT to rate image-quality scores or produce radiological quality reports. Results demonstrate the feasibility of assessing image quality using LLMs. The proposed IQAGPT outperformed GPT-4 and CLIP-IQA, as well as multitask classification and regression models that solely rely on images.

Abstract Solid-state infrared-to-visible photon up-conversion is important for spectral-tailoring applications. However, existing up-conversion systems not only suffer from low efficiencies and a need for high excitation intensity, but also exhibit a limited selection of materials and complex fabrication processes. Herein, we propose a sensitizer with a bulk-heterojunction structure, comprising both an energy donor and an energy acceptor, for triplet-triplet annihilation up-conversion devices. The up-conversion occurs through charge separation at the donor-acceptor interface, followed by the formation of charge transfer state between the energy donor and annihilator following the spin statistics. The bulk-heterojunction sensitizer ensures efficient charge generation and low charge recombination. Hence, we achieve a highly efficient solid-state up-conversion device with 2.20% efficiency and low excitation intensity (10 mW cm−2) through a one-step solution method. We also demonstrate bright up-conversion devices on highly-flexible large-area substrates. This study introduces a simple and scalable platform strategy for fabricating efficient up-conversion devices.

Excessive fructose diet is closely associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. Nevertheless, fructose's specific function and precise mechanism in colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) is rarely known. Here, this study reported that the fructose absorbed by primary colorectal cancer could accelerate CRLM, and the expression of KHK-A, not KHK-C, in liver metastasis was higher than in paired primary tumors. Furthermore, KHK-A facilitated fructose-dependent CRLM in vitro and in vivo by phosphorylating PKM2 at Ser37. PKM2 phosphorylated by KHK-A inhibited its tetramer formation and pyruvic acid kinase activity but promoted the nuclear accumulation of PKM2. EMT and aerobic glycolysis activated by nuclear PKM2 enhance CRC cells' migration ability and anoikis resistance during CRLM progression. TEPP-46 treatment, targeting the phosphorylation of PKM2, inhibited the pro-metastatic effect of KHK-A. Besides, c-myc activated by nuclear PKM2 promotes alternative splicing of KHK-A, forming a positive feedback loop.

Nickel–titanium (NiTi) alloy is a widely utilized medical shape memory alloy (SMA) known for its excellent shape memory effect and superelasticity. Here, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology was employed to fabricate a porous NiTi alloy scaffold featuring a topologically optimized dominant cellular structure that demonstrates favorable physical and superior biological properties. Utilizing a porous structure topology optimization method informed by the stress state of human bones, two types of cellular structures—compression and torsion—were designed, and porous scaffolds were produced via LPBF. The physical properties of the porous NiTi alloy scaffolds were evaluated to confirm their biocompatibility, while their osteogenic efficacy was investigated through both in vivo and in vitro experiments, with comparisons made against a traditional octahedral unit cell structure. NiTi alloy porous scaffolds can be nearly net-shaped via LPBF and exhibit favorable physical properties, including a low elastic modulus, high hydrophilicity, a specific linear expansion rate, as well as superelastic and shape memory effects. These scaffolds demonstrate excellent biocompatibility, support in vitro osteogenesis, and possess significant in vivo bone ingrowth capabilities. When compared to titanium alloys, NiTi alloys show comparable osteogenic properties in vitro but superior bone ingrowth properties in vivo. Additionally, among octahedral-type, torsion-type, and topologically optimized compression-type porous scaffolds, the latter demonstrates enhanced bone ingrowth properties. LPBF technology is effective for manufacturing porous NiTi alloy scaffolds with fine pore structures and excellent mechanical properties. The scaffolds based on topologically optimized dominant cellular structures facilitate satisfactory and efficient bone formation.

Elucidating the genetic basis of natural variation in grain size and weight among rice varieties can help breeders develop high-yielding varieties. We identified a novel gene, GW3a (Grain Weight 3a) (LOC_Os03g27350), that affects rice grain size and weight. gw3a mutants showed higher total starch content and dry matter accumulation than the wild type (WT), Nipponbare, suggesting that GW3a negatively regulates grain size and weight. Moreover, our study found that GW3a interacted with OsATG8 by cleaving it, suggesting that GW3a may be involved in the assembly of autophagosomes and starch degradation in plants. The haplotype analysis of GW3a showed functional differences between indica and japonica rice. Taken together, we conclude that GW3a is expressed in the autophagosome pathway regulating starch metabolism in rice, affecting yield-related traits, such as grain size, grain weight and thousand grain weight (TGW). Our findings also shed new light on autophagy-mediated yield trait regulation, proposing a possible strategy for the genetic improvement of high-yield germplasm in rice.

We propose a double image encryption scheme combining DNA, parallel compressed sensing, enhanced Zigzag confusion, chaotic sparse basis matrix, and chaotic permutation. Firstly, use the logistic map to scramble a Discrete Wavelet Transformation (DWT) matrix to obtain a chaotic DWT matrix. Next, 2D-LICM generates the measurement matrix. Parallel compressed sensing is then performed separately on the two images. Then, enhanced Zigzag confusion and DNA encryption are performed on the new matrix using chaotic sequences to obtain an encrypted image. The chaotic system’s initial value is generated using SHA-256, which has a strong sensitivity to the plain image. We improve on the third-order Colpitts chaotic circuit to construct a more general higher-order Colpitts chaotic oscillator and propose a new fourth-order Colpitts chaotic system. The performance analysis indicates that our encryption algorithm provides excellent security and performance while saving storage space.

Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) was used in aeronautical engineering due to its low equipment cost and ability to create complex shapes. However, the fatigue behavior of WAAM titanium alloy, specifically for low cycle fatigue (LCF), was poorly studied. This paper investigated the microstructure and mechanical behavior of WAAM TC17 in both vertical and horizontal orientations. Fully reversed LCF tests were conducted on specimens with varying strain amplitudes from ±0.4 % to ±1.2 %. The results found that the ultimate tensile and yield strength were similar for both vertical and horizontal samples, but the elongation in the horizontal orientation was approximately 60 % lower than that in the vertical orientation. Considering the cyclic loading behavior, both vertical and horizontal samples exhibited cyclic softening characteristics at high strain amplitudes (0.8%–1.2 %). Additionally, the cyclic softening rate (CSR) of horizontal samples exhibited a higher than that of vertical samples at high strain amplitude. The LCF cracks of WAAM TC17 were initiated from the surface and internal defects of the samples. The LCF performance of the horizontal samples was found to decrease than that of vertical samples. Specifically, the fatigue performance of the horizontal samples is lower by 36.7 % compared to the vertical samples when the number of cycles is 103.

Electricity demand forecasting is of great significance to the electricity system and residents’ life, but it is difficult to forecast the electricity demand series because of the influence of cyclical factors. Electricity demand forecasting also faces the problem of small data amounts. Therefore, we need to design a model that is less affected by data volume and can cope with complex electricity demand series. Based on the Autoformer model, this paper establishes a novel forecasting framework with excellent performance. In the part of data preprocessing, multiple linear regression with 10 variables and Bootstrap processing are added. In the part of the model, the Auto-Correlation mechanism is modified to better extract the historical and nonlinear characteristics of electricity demand series from different time spans. Using this framework, we further analyze the impact of working days and seasonal changes on the electricity demand in Taixing City and New South Wales. In addition, we propose a new electricity demand forecasting method, which can adjust the original sequence according to the actual situation. The experimental results show that this method can achieve good precision in demand forecasting. Taking Taixing of China and New South Wales of Australia as examples, the forecasting performance with the proposed framework is better than that of Autoformer, Reformer, Informer, and other mainstream models. The forecasting indexes with our proposed framework of the test set are MAE: 35.05, RMSE: 47.28, MAPE: 1.63 in Taixing and MAE: 193.17, RMSE: 239.96, MAPE: 2.43 in NSW.

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) is widely used as a sealing material due to its excellent mechanical properties and good oil resistance. However, when using NBR material, the seal structure is unable to avoid the negative effects of rubber aging. Hence, the influence of oil and thermal aging on the characteristics of NBR seals was studied by coupling the mechanical behavioral changes with the tribological behavioral changes of NBR in oil and the thermal environment. For this paper, aging testing and compression testing of NBR were carried out. Additionally, friction testing between friction pairs under different aging times was carried out. The surface morphology of the NBR working surface under different aging conditions was also observed. Finally, coefficients of different test conditions were introduced into the finite element model of NBR seals. It can be seen from the results that the elastic modulus increased with the increase in aging time in the thermal oxidative aging testing. The elastic modulus after 7 days of thermal oxidative aging increased by 135.45% compared to the unaged case, and the elastic modulus after 7 days of oil aging increased by 15.03% compared to the unaged case. The compression set rate of NBR increased significantly with the increase in aging time and temperature. The coefficient of friction (COF) between friction pairs increased first and then decreased with the increase in aging time. The maximum contact pressure decreased by 2.43% between the shaft and sealing ring and decreased by 4.01% between the O-ring and groove. The proportion of the effective sealing area decreased by 3.05% between the shaft and sealing ring and decreased by 6.11% between the O-ring and groove. Furthermore, the sealing characteristics between the O-ring and groove were better than those between the shaft and sealing ring.

Abstract Occluded person re‐identification (Re‐ID) is to identify a particular person when the person's body parts are occluded. However, challenges remain in enhancing effective information representation and suppressing background clutter when considering occlusion scenes. This paper proposes a novel attention map‐driven network (AMD‐Net) for occluded person Re‐ID. In AMD‐Net, human parsing labels are introduced to supervise the generation of partial attention maps, while a spatial‐frequency interaction module is suggested to complement the higher‐order semantic information from the frequency domain. Furthermore, a Taylor‐inspired feature filter for mitigating background disturbance and extracting fine‐grained features is proposed. Moreover, a part‐soft triplet loss, which is robust to non‐discriminative body partial features is also designed. Experimental results on Occluded‐Duke, Occluded‐Reid, Market‐1501, and Duke‐MTMC datasets show that this method outperforms existing state‐of‐the‐art methods. BackgroundThere is a lack of individualized evidence on surgical choices for glioblastoma (GBM) patients.AimThis study aimed to make individualized treatment recommendations for patients with GBM and to determine the importance of demographic and tumor characteristic variables in the selection of extent of resection.MethodsWe proposed Balanced Decision Ensembles (BDE) to make survival predictions and individualized treatment recommendations. We developed several DL models to counterfactually predict the individual treatment effect (ITE) of patients with GBM. We divided the patients into the recommended (Rec.) and anti-recommended groups based on whether their actual treatment was consistent with the model recommendation.ResultsThe BDE achieved the best recommendation effects (difference in restricted mean survival time (dRMST): 5.90; 95% confidence interval (CI), 4.40–7.39; hazard ratio (HR): 0.71; 95% CI, 0.65–0.77), followed by BITES and DeepSurv. Inverse probability treatment weighting (IPTW)-adjusted HR, IPTW-adjusted OR, natural direct effect, and control direct effect demonstrated better survival outcomes of the Rec. group.ConclusionThe ITE calculation method is crucial, as it may result in better or worse recommendations. Furthermore, the significant protective effects of machine recommendations on survival time and mortality indicate the superiority of the model for application in patients with GBM. Overall, the model identifies patients with tumors located in the right and left frontal and middle temporal lobes, as well as those with larger tumor sizes, as optimal candidates for SpTR.

Abstract Tumor‐associated macrophages (TAMs) play a crucial role in promoting tumor growth and dissemination, motivating a search for key targets to interfere with the activation of TAMs or reprogram TAMs into the tumor‐suppressive type. To gain insight into the mechanisms of macrophage polarization, a designed co‐culture system is established, allowing for the education of macrophages in a manner that closely mimics the intricacies of TAMs in the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). Through database mining, exosomal miR‐1246 is identified and is then validated. Exosomal miR‐1246‐driven polarization of TAMs disrupts the infiltration and function of CD8+ T cells. Mechanically, the amassment of exosomal miR‐1246 stems from TUT7‐mediated degradation of small noncoding RNA, a process stabilized by SNRPB, but not the precursor of miR‐1246. Moreover, an Exo‐motif is present in the exosomal miR‐1246 sequence, enabling it to bind with the exosomal sorting protein hnRNPA2B1. RNA‐seq analysis reveals that exogenous miR‐1246 modulates the polarization of TAMs at a post‐transcriptional level, emphasizing the pivotal role of the NLRP3 in macrophage polarization. In conclusion, the findings underscore the importance of exosomal miR‐1246 as a trigger of macrophage reprogramming and uncover a novel mechanism for its enhanced presence in the TIME.

Background Serotonin (5-HT) precursors regulate bone remodeling. This study aims to investigate the correlation of plasma 5-HT precursors and metabolite with bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover markers in postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) patients. Methods The age, body mass index (BMI), and years since menopause (YSM) were documented for 348 postmenopausal women in normal/osteopenia/osteoporosis (OP) groups, with lumbar spine and femoral neck BMD measured. Serum bone turnover markers (PINP/β-CTX) and plasma 5-HT, 5-HT precursors (Trp/5-HTP) and metabolite (5-HIAA) were measured by ELISA. OP patients were allocated to high/low expression groups following ROC analysis of 5-HT/Trp/5-HTP/5-HIAA. The relationship of plasma 5-HT/Trp/5-HTP/5-HIAA, BMD, and bone turnover markers with PMOP was analyzed using logistic regression analysis. The correlation of plasma 5-HT/Trp/5-HTP/5-HIAA with BMD and bone turnover markers was analyzed using Pearson’s correlation analysis, followed by logistic regression analysis of the relationship between plasma 5-HT/Trp/5-HTP/5-HIAA and BMD, bone turnover markers and PMOP. Results BMI, YSM, BMD and PINP, and β-CTX levels differed among groups. Levels of plasma 5-HT precursors/metabolite were increased in OP patients. Individuals with high 5-HT precursors/metabolite levels had low BMD and high PINP/β-CTX levels. The 5-HT precursors/metabolite negatively-correlated with BMD and positively-correlated with PINP/β-CTX. BMI, YSM, BMD, and PINP/β-CTX/Trp/5-HTP/5-HT related to PMOP and were independent risk factors for OP. Conclusion Plasma 5-HT precursors and metabolite negatively-correlate with BMD and positively-correlate with PINP/β-CTX in PMOP patients. Peripheral 5-HT precursors and metabolite level may be a new direction of treatment of PMOP and bone metabolism-related disorders.

The degradation of typical dye wastewater is a focus of research in the printing and dyeing industry. In this study, a combined micro-electrolysis and microbial treatment method was established to treat refractory dye wastewater, and the pivotal factors in the microbial treatment were optimized. In the series and coupled modes, the removal rates of chroma reached 98.75% and 92.50%, and the removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD) reached 96.17% and 82.29%, respectively. The high-throughput sequencing results showed that the microbial communities in the microbial system varied at different treatment stages. From the culture stage to the domestication stage, the dominant phylum was Proteobacteria; however, the community abundance of microorganisms decreased. A combination of micro-electrolysis and biological methods can alter the characteristics of the microbial community, increase the number of dominant phyla, and increase the abundance of microorganisms. The degradation effect of the series mode and the overall strengthening effect of micro-electrolysis on the microorganisms were better than those of the coupled mode. In actual wastewater, the maximum removal rates of chroma, COD, total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and total phosphorus (TP) are 97.50%, 98.90%, 94.35%, 93.95%, and 91.17%, respectively. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum analysis showed that microbial processes could significantly degrade fluorescent components in wastewater, and methanogenic active enzymes in anaerobic processes could continue to react. The combined process can realize the efficient treatment of toxic dye wastewater by reducing the toxicity of wastewater and efficiently degrading organic matter, which has important guiding significance for the treatment of refractory dye wastewater.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) has the ability to invade human cortical bones and cause intracellular infections in osteoblasts, which may lead to a long-term infection that is difficult to eliminate. It is critical to identify the underlying mechanisms of the osteoblast response to the intracellular S. aureus. More recently, multiple circular RNA (circRNA) functions have been identified, including serving as protein scaffolds or miRNA sponges and being translated into polypeptides. The role that circRNAs play in intracellular S. aureus infection of osteoblasts has not, to our knowledge, been investigated. Here, we established an intracellular infection model of S. aureus in osteoblasts and compared the circRNA expression of osteoblasts between the infected and control groups using RNA sequencing technology, by which a significant difference was found. In total, 117 upregulated and 125 down-regulated differentially expressed circRNAs (DEcircRNAs) were identified, and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR was employed to validate the results of RNA sequencing. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses demonstrated that DEcircRNAs were enriched in processes associated with macromolecule modification, cellular component organization or biogenesis, and intracellular non-membrane-bound organelles. Finally, a potentially important network of circRNA-miRNA-mRNA based on the DEcircRNAs was constructed. Overall, this study revealed the circRNA expression profile of human osteoblasts infected by intracellular S. aureus for the first time, and identified the circRNAs that may contribute to the pathogenesis of infectious diseases caused by intracellular S. aureus infection in human osteoblasts.

Abstract Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a serious infectious disease and one of the major causes of death in the global pig industry. PRRS virus (PRRSV) strains have complex and diverse genetic characteristics and cross-protection between strains is low, which complicates vaccine selection; thus, the current vaccination strategy has been greatly compromised. Therefore, it is necessary to identify effective natural compounds for the clinical treatment of PRRS. A small molecule library composed of 720 natural compounds was screened in vitro, and we found that Sanggenon C (SC) was amongst the most effective natural compound inhibitors of PRRSV infection. Compared with ribavirin, SC more significantly inhibited PRRSV infection at both the gene and protein levels and reduced the viral titres and levels of protein expression and inflammatory cytokine secretion to more effectively protect cells from PRRSV infection and damage. Mechanistically, SC inhibits activation of the NF-κB signalling pathway by promoting TRAF2 expression, thereby reducing PRRSV replication. In conclusion, by screening natural compounds, we found that SC suppresses PRRSV infection by regulating the TRAF2/NF-κB signalling pathway. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the therapeutic targets and pathogenesis of PRRSV infection. More importantly, our results demonstrate that SC has potential as a candidate for the treatment of PRRS.

Abstract Background Due to the heterogeneity of low‐grade gliomas (LGGs), the lack of randomized control trials, and strong clinical evidence, the effect of the extent of resection (EOR) is currently controversial. Aim To determine the best choice between subtotal resection (STR) and gross‐total resection (GTR) for individual patients and to identify features that are potentially relevant to treatment heterogeneity. Methods Patients were enrolled from the SEER database. We used a novel DL approach to make treatment recommendations for patients with LGG. We also made causal inference of the average treatment effect (ATE) of GTR compared with STR. Results The patients were divided into the Consis. and In‐consis. groups based on whether their actual treatment and model recommendations were consistent. Better brain cancer‐specific survival (BCSS) outcomes in the Consis. group was observed. Overall, we also identified two subgroups that showed strong heterogeneity in response to GTR. By interpreting the models, we identified numerous variables that may be related to treatment heterogeneity. Conclusions This is the first study to infer the individual treatment effect, make treatment recommendation, and guide surgical options through deep learning approach in LGG research. Through causal inference, we found that heterogeneous responses to STR and GTR exist in patients with LGG. Visualization of the model yielded several factors that contribute to treatment heterogeneity, which are worthy of further discussion.

Abstract State‐of‐the‐art object detection models rely on large‐scale datasets for training to achieve good precision. Without sufficient samples, the model can suffer from severe overfitting. Current explorations in few‐shot object detection are mainly divided into meta‐learning‐based methods and fine‐tuning‐based methods. However, existing models do not focus on how feature maps should be processed to present more accurate regions of interest (RoIs), leading to many non‐supporting RoIs. These non‐supporting RoIs can increase the burden of subsequent classification and even lead to misclassification. Additionally, catastrophic forgetting is inevitable in both few‐shot object detection models. Many models classify directly in low‐dimensional spaces due to insufficient resources, but this transformation of the data space can confuse some categories and lead to misclassification. To address these problems, the Feature Reconstruction Detector (FRDet) is proposed, a simple yet effective fine‐tune‐based approach for few‐shot object detection. FRDet includes a region proposal network (RPN) based on channel attention and space attention called Multi‐Attention RPN (MARPN) and a head based on feature reconstruction called Feature Reconstruction Head (FRHead). MARPN utilizes channel attention to suppress non‐supporting classes and spatial attention to enhance support classes based on Attention RPN, resulting in fewer but more accurate RoIs. Meanwhile, FRHead utilizes support features to reconstruct query RoI features through a closed‐form solution, allowing for a comprehensive and fine‐grained comparison. The model was validated on the PASCAL VOC, MS COCO, FSOD, and CUB200 datasets and achieved better results.

Abstract Background Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a prevalent cancer in adult urology, often leading to metastasis and poor prognosis. Recently, advances in tumor immunology and aging research have opened up new possibilities for the treatment of kidney cancer. Therefore, the identification of potential targets and prognostic biomarkers for immunotherapy has become increasingly urgent. Methods Using GSE168845 data, we identified immune-aging-associated differentially expressed genes (IAR-DEGs) by intersecting differentially expressed immune-related genes and aging-related genes. The prognostic value of IAR-DEGs was determined via univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis, revealing KL as an independent prognostic factor for ccRCC. We also investigated the correlation between KL and various immune-related factors, including immune cell infiltration, immune score, immune checkpoint, MSI, and TIED score. To confirm the expression of KL in ccRCC, we conducted qRT-PCR assays on both ccRCC cell lines and clinical tissue samples, and compared KL expression levels between normal kidney cell line (HK-2) and ACHN, a ccRCC cell line. Finally, we assessed KL protein expression levels in tissues using immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results In this study, we utilized Venn diagram analysis to identify 17 co-expressed immune-aging related DEGs from GSE168845, import database, and MSigDB database. GO and KEGG analysis revealed that the functions of the 17 IAR-DEGs were primarily related to “aging”. Univariate and multivariate Cox analysis validated these 17 genes, and KL was determined to be an independent prognostic factor for ccRCC. Abstract Wireless power transfer with collimated power transmission and efficient conversion provides an alternative charging mode for off-grid and portable micro-power electronics. However, charging micro-power electronics with low photon flux can be challenging for current laser power converters. Here we show laser power converters with organic photovoltaic cells with good performance for application in laser wireless power transfer. The laser selection strategy is established and the upper limit of efficiency is proposed. The organic laser power converters exhibit a 36.2% efficiency at a 660 nm laser with a photon flux of 9.5 mW cm−2 and achieve wireless micro power transfer with an output of 0.5 W on a 2 meter scale. This work shows the good performance of organic photovoltaic cells in constructing organic laser power converters and provides a potential solution for the wireless power transfer of micro-power electronics.

The Tsinghua University–Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS) started to monitor the LAMOST plates in 2020, leading to the discovery of numerous short-period eclipsing binaries, peculiar pulsators, flare stars, and other variable objects. Here, we present the uninterrupted light curves for a sample of 64 cataclysmic variables (CVs) observed/discovered using the TMTS during its first three-year observations, and we introduce new CVs and new light-variation periods (from known CVs) revealed through the TMTS observations. Thanks to the high-cadence observations of TMTS, diverse light variations, including superhumps, quasi-periodic oscillations, large-amplitude orbital modulations, and rotational modulations, are able to be detected in our CV samples, providing key observational clues for understanding the fast-developing physical processes in various CVs. All of these short-timescale light-curve features help further classify the subtypes of CV systems. We highlight the light-curve features observed in our CV sample and discuss further implications of minute-cadence light curves for CV identifications and classifications. Moreover, we examine the Hα emission lines in the spectra from our nonmagnetic CV samples (i.e., dwarf novae and nova-like subclasses) and find that the distribution of Hα emission strength shows significant differences between the sources with orbital periods above and below the period gap, which agrees with the trend seen from the SDSS nonmagnetic CV sample.

The achievement of size uniformity and monodispersity in perovskite quantum dots (QDs) requires the implementation of precise temperature control and the establishment of optimal reaction conditions. Nevertheless, the accurate control of a range of reaction variables represents a considerable challenge. This study addresses the aforementioned challenge by employing manganese (Mn) doping to achieve size uniformity in CsPbBr3 perovskite QDs without the necessity for the precise control of the reaction conditions. By optimizing the Mn:Pb ratio, it is possible to successfully dope CsPbBr3 QDs with the appropriate concentrations of Mn²⁺ and achieve a uniform size distribution. The spectroscopic measurements on single QDs indicate that the appropriate Mn²⁺ concentrations can result in a narrower spectral linewidth, a longer photoluminescence (PL) lifetime, and a reduced biexciton Auger recombination rate, thus positively affecting the PL properties. This study not only simplifies the size control of perovskite QDs but also demonstrates the potential of Mn-doped CsPbBr3 QDs for narrow-linewidth light-emitting diode applications.

Keap1 interacts with Nrf2 by assisting in its ubiquitination and subsequent proteolysis. By preventing ROS accumulation during RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis, Nrf2 activation can prevent the differentiation of osteoclasts. Additionally, inhibiting the Keap1-Nrf2 PPI can be an effective strategy for triggering Nrf2 to regulate oxidative stress. Structure-based virtual screening was performed to discover a potentially novel Keap1-Nrf2 PPI inhibitor wherein KCB-F06 was identified. The inhibitory effects of KCB-F06 on osteoclastogenesis were investigated in vitro through TRAP staining and bone resorption assays. An ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis mouse model was applied to evaluate KCB-F06’s therapeutic effects in vivo. Lastly, the underlying mechanisms were explored using real-time PCR, Western blotting, and co-IP assays. KCB-F06 was discovered as a novel Keap1-Nrf2 PPI inhibitor. As a result, the expression of antioxidants (HO-1 and NQO1) was suppressed, hence reducing ROS accumulation during osteoclastogenesis. Subsequently, this caused the inactivation of RANKL-induced IKB/NF-kB signaling. This eventually led to the downregulation of osteoclast-specific proteins including NFATc1, which is an essential transcription factor for osteoclastogenesis. These results demonstrated that Nrf2 activation in osteoclasts is a valuable tool for osteoclastic bone loss management. In addition, KCB-F06 presents as an alternative candidate for treating osteoclast-related bone diseases and as a novel small molecule that can serve as a model for further Keap1-NRF2 PPI inhibitor development.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), which regulate gene expression through post-transcriptional modifications of RNAs, play a role in diverse biological processes that include bone cell development and bone tissue formation. RBP dysregulation may result in aberrant bone homeostasis and contribute to various bone diseases. The function of RBPs in bone physiology and pathophysiology and the underlying molecular mechanisms have been extensively studied in recent years. This article provides a review of such studies, highlighting the potential of RBPs as pivotal targets for therapeutic intervention.

Stem color is an important agronomic trait of wax gourds. However, its regulatory genes have not been identified. In this study, 105 inbred lines constructed from two parents (GX-71 and MY-1) were sequenced and quantitative trait loci sequencing was used to mine the genes that regulate stem color in wax gourds. The results identified two quantitative trait loci related to stem color, qSC5 and qSC12, located on Chr05 (11,134,567–16,459,268) and Chr12 (74,618,168–75,712,335), respectively. The qSC5 had a phenotypic variation rate of 36.9% and a maximum limit of detection of 16.9. And the qSC12 had a phenotypic variation rate of 20.9%, and a maximum limit of detection of 11.2. Bch05G003950 (named BchAPRR2) and Bch12G020400 were identified as candidate genes involved in stem color regulation in wax gourds. The chlorophyll content and expression of BchAPRR2 and Bch12G020400 were significantly higher in green-stemmed wax gourds than in white-stemmed ones. Therefore, BchAPRR2 and Bch12G020400 were considered the main and secondary regulatory genes for wax gourd stem color, respectively. Finally, InDel markers closely linked to BchAPRR2 were developed to validate the prediction of wax gourd stem color traits in 55 germplasm lines, with an accuracy of 81.8%. These findings lay the foundation for exploring the genetic regulation of wax gourd stem color and future research on wax gourd breeding.

Abstract Dense video captioning aims to locate multiple events in an untrimmed video and generate captions for each event. Previous methods experienced difficulties in establishing the multimodal feature relationship between frames and captions, resulting in low accuracy of the generated captions. To address this problem, a novel Dense Video Captioning Model Based on Local Attention (DVCL) is proposed. DVCL employs a 2D temporal differential CNN to extract video features, followed by feature encoding using a deformable transformer that establishes the global feature dependence of the input sequence. Then DIoU and TIoU are incorporated into the event proposal match algorithm and evaluation algorithm during training, to yield more accurate event proposals and hence increase the quality of the captions. Furthermore, an LSTM based on local attention is designed to generate captions, enabling each word in the captions to correspond to the relevant frame. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of DVCL. On the ActivityNet Captions dataset, DVCL performs significantly better than other baselines, with improvements of 5.6%, 8.2%, and 15.8% over the best baseline in BLEU4, METEOR, and CIDEr, respectively.

Summary: The premetastatic niche (PMN) contributes to lung-specific metastatic tropism in osteosarcoma. However, the crosstalk between primary tumor cells and lung stromal cells is not clearly defined. Here, we dissect the composition of immune cells in the lung PMN and identify granulocytic myeloid-derived suppressor cell (gMDSC) infiltration as positively associated with immunosuppressive PMN formation and tumor cell colonization. Osteosarcoma-cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) activate lung interstitial macrophages to initiate the influx of gMDSCs via secretion of the chemokine CXCL2. Proteomic profiling of EVs reveals that EV-packaged S100A11 stimulates the Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 signaling pathway in macrophages by interacting with USP9X. High level of S100A11 expression or circulating gMDSCs correlates with the presentation of lung metastasis and poor prognosis in osteosarcoma patients. In summary, we identify a key role of tumor-derived EVs in lung PMN formation, providing potential strategies for monitoring or preventing lung metastasis in osteosarcoma.

To solve the problem of full-process path planning that includes multi-target path planning and automatic mooring, this paper proposes a hybrid D*Lite algorithm for an unmanned surface vessel with pose constraints (position and attitude) in an unknown environment. First, to solve the problem of multi-target path planning under the pose constraints, the D*Lite algorithm is combined with the Dubins search tree algorithm, and the corner at the sampling point is eliminated so that the path is smoothly connected. Second, to achieve the automatic mooring under the pose constraints and the avoidance of unknown obstacles, the D*Lite algorithm is combined with Reeds-Shepp curves to introduce the heading angle into the traditional two-dimensional search. This paper has conducted three groups of simulation experiments. In simulation experiment 1 and 2, compared with other algorithms in the multi-target points and automatic mooring environment for simulation experiments respectively, the D*Lite (Dubins) and D*Lite (RS) algorithm outperformed other algorithms in terms of planning time, planning distance, and smoothness. In simulation experiment 3, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method were verified on the grid map and compared with the traditional D*Lite algorithm. A visualization simulation was conducted, and the results revealed that the hybrid D*Lite algorithm enabled the unmanned surface vessel to efficiently achieve smooth movement with full-process throughout unknown environment.

With advancements in deep space exploration missions, long-term spaceflights pose potential hazards to the reproductive and developmental functions of astronauts. Embryonic stem cells (ESCs), which are crucial to the development and growth of individual organisms, are observably altered by a microgravity environment. However, the role and mechanisms of microgravity in other activities of ESCs are still unclear. Here, mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) were used to investigate and understand the effect of microgravity on their activities. Combined with the SJ-10 satellite and random position machine, which were utilized for spaceflight and microgravity simulation, respectively, the bioinformatic tools were also used to assess the effect that microgravity might have on mESC activities. Based on differentially expressed genes (DEGs) analysis, 114 DEGs were significantly up-regulated and 859 DEGs were significantly down-regulated in mESCs after being subjected to spaceflight. The activities, such as cell proliferation, senescence, and apoptosis, were selected and confirmed by Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses. It demonstrated a reduced proliferation capability of mESCs but increased the number of senescent and apoptotic cells after being subjected to simulated microgravity. Real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis of the screened activity-related DEGs demonstrated approximately consistent trends of these gene expressions in both spaceflight and simulated microgravity, as was predicted by bioinformatics analysis. Overall, these findings suggest that microgravity inhibits the proliferation of mESCs and induces senescence and apoptosis, shedding light on the impact of microgravity on the fundamental functions of mESCs in reproductive and embryonic development.

Aims/hypothesis: The association between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been reported by many observational studies in the Asian population. This study aimed to examine the bidirectional causal effects between GERD and RA by two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses using genetic evidence.Methods: Two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses were performed to determine the causal effect of GERD (129,080 cases vs. 602,604 control participants) on RA (6,236 cases vs. 147,221 control participants) and RA on GERD, respectively. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary analysis. Weighted median and MR-Egger regression were taken as supplementary analyses. Cochran’s Q test evaluated the heterogeneity. Horizontal pleiotropy was detected by estimating the intercept term of MR-Egger regression. Furthermore, multivariable MR analyses were performed to exclude the influence of confounding factors, including the years of schooling, BMI, and time spent watching television, between GERD and RA.Result: Both univariate MR (UVMR) and multivariable MR (MVMR) provided valid evidence that RA was causally and positively influenced by GERD (UVMR: OR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.25–1.76, p = 6.18*10−6; MVMR: OR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.24–2.31, p = 8.62*10−4), whereas GERD was not influenced by RA (UVMR: OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.00–1.06, p = 0.042; MVMR: OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.00–1.07, p = 0.0271).Conclusion: Our comprehensive bidirectional MR analysis found that for the European population, GERD can induce the occurrence of RA (OR = 1.69, p < 0.00125), whereas RA only has no significant influence on GERD. In particular, patients with GERD are suffering a 69% increased risk of RA occurrence, which means GERD is a substantial risk factor for RA.

Abstract Amorphous carbon films have attracted substantial interest due to their exceptional mechanical and tribological properties. Previous studies revealed that the amorphous carbon films exhibited lower coefficient of friction (COF) because of the transformation in bond structure from sp3-C to sp2-C during friction processes. However, the mechanism for such a transformation during friction is not well understood. This study is conducted to get an insight into the metastable transformation in amorphous carbon film during friction by means of experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Relevant wear tests showed that wear of the film changed from an abrasive wear mode to a mixture of abrasion and adhesive wear, resulting in a decrease in growth rate of the wear rate after the running-in stage. It is worth noting that the sp3-C atoms were increased during the running-in stage when the films contained lower sp3/sp2 ratios. However, the formed sp3-C atoms could only be short-lived and gradually transformed to sp2-C atoms with the graphitization generated on the wearing surface of the films. The radial distribution function and translational order parameter indicated that the films’ high sp3/sp2 ratio led to an increased sp2-C proportion on the wear scar after friction, which caused an increased structural ordering.

Abstract Objective The microinflammatory state can influence the occurrence of dialysis-related complications in dialysis patients. Chronic periodontitis (CP), in which plaque biofilm is considered to be the initiating factor, is a chronic infectious disease in the oral cavity. It is still uncertain whether CP affects the microinflammatory state in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and the occurrence of dialysis-related complications. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between the periodontal index and clinical parameters in peritoneal dialysis patients with CP and dialysis-related complications, including peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP) and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (CCEs). Methods This was a retrospective cohort study, and 76 patients undergoing PD were enrolled. Clinical parameters, the occurrence of PD-related complications and periodontitis-related indicators, including the gingival index (GI), plaque index (PLI), probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL), were collected. Correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation between periodontal or clinical parameters and the occurrence of PD-related complications. Results All the patients had different degrees of periodontitis (mild 9.2%, moderate 72.4%, severe 18.4%); PPD was inversely related to serum albumin (r = − 0.235, p = 0.041); CAL has a positive correlation with serum C-reactive protein (rs = 0.242, p = 0.035); PLI was positively correlated with serum calcium (r = 0.314, p = 0.006). ANOVA, multivariate logistic regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier Survival curve suggested that CAL was a risk factor for the occurrence of PDAP. There was no correlation between periodontal parameters and CCEs or poor prognosis. Conclusion CP is universally present in PD patients, and the presentation of periodontitis influences the systemic inflammatory state in PD patients. CP is a risk factor for PDAP.

Background: The decreased osteogenic differentiation ability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is one of the important reasons for SOP. Inhibition of Wnt signaling in MSCs is closely related to SOP. Microtubule actin crosslinking factor 1 (MACF1) is an important regulator in Wnt/β-catenin signal transduction. However, whether the specific expression of MACF1 in MSC regulates SOP and its mechanism remains unclear. Methods: We established MSC-specific Prrx1 (Prx1) promoter-driven MACF1 conditional knock-in (MACF-KI) mice, naturally aged male mice, and ovariectomized female mice models. Micro-CT, H&E staining, double calcein labeling, and the three-point bending test were used to explore the effects of MACF1 on bone formation and bone microstructure in the SOP mice model. Bioinformatics analysis, ChIP-PCR, qPCR, and ALP staining were used to explore the effects and mechanisms of MACF1 on MSCs’ osteogenic differentiation. Results: Microarray analysis revealed that the expression of MACF1 and positive regulators of the Wnt pathway (such as TCF4, β-catenin, Dvl) was decreased in human MSCs (hMSCs) isolated from aged osteoporotic than non-osteoporotic patients. The ALP activity and osteogenesis marker genes (Alp, Runx2, and Bglap) expression in mouse MSCs was downregulated during aging. Furthermore, Micro-CT analysis of the femur from 2-month-old MSC-specific Prrx1 (Prx1) promoter-driven MACF1 conditional knock-in (MACF-cKI) mice showed no significant trabecular bone changes compared to wild-type littermate controls, whereas 18- and 21-month-old MACF1 c-KI animals displayed increased bone mineral densities (BMD), improved bone microstructure, and increased maximum compression stress. In addition, the ovariectomy (OVX)-induced osteoporosis model of MACF1 c-KI mice had significantly higher trabecular volume and number, and increased bone formation rate than that in control mice. Mechanistically, ChIP-PCR showed that TCF4 could bind to the promoter region of the host gene miR-335–5p. Moreover, MACF1 could regulate the expression of miR-335–5p by TCF4 during the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. Conclusion: These data indicate that MACF1 positively regulates MSCs osteogenesis and bone formation through the TCF4/miR-335-5p signaling pathway in SOP, suggesting that targeting MACF1 may be a novel therapeutic approach against SOP. The translational potential of this article: MACF1, an important switch in the Wnt signaling pathway, can alleviate SOP through the TCF4/miR-335-5p signaling pathway in mice model. It might act as a therapeutic target for the treatment of SOP to improve bone function.

Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) acquisition is a technique for marine seismic survey that has gained increased attention in recent years. The removal of shear wave noise from the vertical component of receivers plays a crucial role in the subsequent processing and interpretation of OBN data. Previous solutions suffer from noise residue or signal impairment for complex noise and signal overlap scenarios. In this work, we present and explore a self-supervised deep learning approach to attenuate shear wave noise in OBN data. It applies a deep neural network (DNN) to perform adaptive subtraction and comprises two steps to remove the noise associated with the two horizontal components of receivers, respectively. The two horizontal components are considered as noise reference and are sequentially fed into the DNN, and the DNN predicts the actual leaked noise from the contaminated vertical components data. The self-supervised method achieves improvements in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on a set of synthetic data. The implementation of our method on field data demonstrates that it effectively attenuates the shear wave noise and preserves the valid signal.

The synthesis of nylon 6 and nylon 66 can be performed, starting with the selective hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene, which is deemed to be environmentally friendly and cost-saving and to have higher atom efficiency. Nano-Ru catalyst was synthesized via a precipitation method. The prepared catalyst was evaluated in the selective hydrogenation of benzene toward cyclohexene generation in the presence of ZnSO4 in a liquid batch reactor. The promotion effect of the addition of amines, i.e., ethylenediamine, ethanolamine, diethanolamine, and triethanolamine, was investigated. The fresh and spent catalysts were thoroughly characterized by XRD, TEM, AES, N2-sorption, FT-IR, and TPR. It was found that the addition of amines could significantly improve the catalytic selectivity toward cyclohexene formation in the presence of ZnSO4. This was attributed to the formation of (Zn(OH)2)5(ZnSO4)(H2O)x (x = 0.5, 3 or 4) through the reaction between ZnSO4 and the amines, which could be chemisorbed on the Ru surface. This led to retarding the formation of cyclohexane from the complete hydrogenation of benzene and, thus, increased the catalytic selectivity toward cyclohexene synthesis. Therefore, with the presence of ZnSO4, the amount of chemisorbed (Zn(OH)2)5(ZnSO4)(H2O)x increased with increasing amounts of added amines, leading to a decline in the catalytic activity toward benzene conversion and selectivity toward cyclohexene generation. When 7.6 mmol of diethanolamine and 10 g of ZrO2 were applied, the highest cyclohexene yields of 61.6% and 77.0% of benzene conversion were achieved over the Ru catalyst. Promising stability was demonstrated after six runs of catalytic experiments without regeneration. These achievements are not only promising for industrial application but also beneficial for designing other catalytic systems for selective hydrogenation.

Abstract The mechanism behind the significant Izu‐Bonin‐Mariana (IBM) trench advance is still controversial. We conduct slab subduction numerical models that reproduce the spatio‐temporal tectonic evolution of the Philippine Sea region to investigate whether slab pull from the Ryukyu subduction zone can cross the weakened Philippine Sea Plate and act on the IBM trench. Model results show that the lithospheric strengthening and weakening effects cancel out each other during the rift stage so that the slab pull from the Ryukyu Trench can transmit through the weak fossil spreading centers and intra‐arc rifts and drive the Izu‐Bonin Trench's advance. In contrast, lithospheric weakening overwhelms lithospheric strengthening and impedes stress transfer in the back‐arc spreading stage, suggesting that the slab pull cannot directly pull the Mariana Trench to advance at present. Our study indicates that extreme rheological parameters are not needed for the IBM trench advance, despite the Philippine Sea Plate is weakened.

Introduction/BackgroundThe seed size of wax gourds is an important agronomic trait; however, the associated genes have not yet been reported.MethodsIn this study, we used a high-density genetic map constructed based on F8 recombinant inbred line populations derived from a cross between MY-1 (large seed) and GX-71 (small seed) strains to detect quantitative trait locis (QTLs) for seed-size-related traits in wax gourd over a two-year period.ResultsTwo stable QTLs (qSL10 and qSW10) for seed length (SL) and seed width (SW) on chromosome 10 were repeatedly detected over two years (2021–2022). qSL10 had a phenotypic variation rate of 75.30% and 80.80% in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Whereas, qSW10 had a phenotypic variation rate of 66.60% and 73.80% in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Further, a single nucleotide polymorphism mutation was found to cause early termination of Bch10G006400 (BhHLS1) translation in GX-71 through sequencing analysis of candidate genes. Based on gene functional annotation and quantitative real-time PCR analyses, BhHLS1 encoded a probable N-acetyltransferase HLS1-like protein and its expression level was significantly different between parents. Therefore, BhHLS1 is a major candidate gene associated with a one-factor polymorphism regulating the SL and SW of wax gourds. Finally, based on variation in the BhHLS1 sequence, a cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence marker was developed for the molecular marker-assisted breeding of wax gourds.DiscussionOverall, this study is of great significance for the genetic improvement of seed size, verification of gene functions, and cultivation of specific germplasm resources for wax gourds.

Abstract Background N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C) as a significant RNA modification has been reported to maintain the stability of mRNA and to regulate the translation process. However, the roles of both ac4C and its ‘writer’ protein N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10) played in the disease especially colorectal cancer (CRC) are unclear. At this point, we discover the underlying mechanism of NAT10 modulating the progression of CRC via mRNA ac4C modification. Methods The clinical significance of NAT10 was explored based on the TCGA and GEO data sets and the 80 CRC patients cohort of our hospital. qRT-PCR, dot blot, WB, and IHC were performed to detect the level of NAT10 and ac4C modification in CRC tissues and matched adjacent tissues. CCK-8, colony formation, transwell assay, mouse xenograft, and other in vivo and in vitro experiments were conducted to probe the biological functions of NAT10. The potential mechanisms of NAT10 in CRC were clarified by RNA-seq, RIP-seq, acRIP-seq, luciferase reporter assays, etc. Results The levels of NAT10 and ac4C modification were significantly upregulated. Also, the high expression of NAT10 had important clinical values like poor prognosis, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, etc. Furthermore, the in vitro experiments showed that NAT10 could inhibit apoptosis and enhance the proliferation, migration, and invasion of CRC cells and also arrest them in the G2/M phase. The in vivo experiments discovered that NAT10 could promote tumor growth and liver/lung metastasis. In terms of mechanism, NAT10 could mediate the stability of KIF23 mRNA by binding to its mRNA 3’UTR region and up-regulating its mRNA ac4c modification. And then the protein level of KIF23 was elevated to activate the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and more β-catenin was transported into the nucleus which led to the CRC progression. Besides, the inhibitor of NAT10, remodelin, was applied in vitro and vivo which showed an inhibitory effect on the CRC cells. Conclusions NAT10 promotes the CRC progression through the NAT10/KIF23/GSK-3β/β-catenin axis and its expression is mediated by GSK-3β which forms a feedback loop. Our findings provide a potential prognosis or therapeutic target for CRC and remodelin deserves more attention. Graphical Abstract

Skeletal progenitors provide a reservoir for bone-forming osteoblasts. However, the major energy source for their osteogenesis remains unresolved. Here, the authors demonstrate that ESCIT-mediated regulation of mitochondrial metabolism is required for osteogenesis.

Rice paddies are unique waterlogged wetlands artificially constructed for agricultural production. Periphytic biofilms (PBs) at the soil–water interface play an important role in rice paddies characterized by high nutrient input but low utilization efficiency. PBs are composed of microbial aggregates, including a wide variety of microorganisms (algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and metazoa), extracellular polymeric substances and minerals (iron, aluminum, and calcium), which form an integrated food web and energy flux within a relatively stable micro-ecosystem. PBs are crucial to regulate and streamline the nitrogen cycle by neutralizing nitrogen losses and improving rice production since PBs can serve as both a sink by capturing surplus nitrogen and a source by slowly re-releasing this nitrogen for reutilization. Here the ecological advantages of PBs in regulating the nitrogen cycle in rice paddies are illustrated. We summarize the key functional importance of PBs, including the intricate and delicate community structure, microbial interactions among individual phylotypes, a wide diversity of self-produced organics, the active adaptation of PBs to constantly changing environments, and the intricate mechanisms by which PBs regulate the nitrogen cycle. We also identify the future challenges of microbial interspecific cooperation in PBs and their quantitative contributions to agricultural sustainability, optimizing nitrogen utilization and crop yields in rice paddies.

The use of AI systems in healthcare for the early screening of diseases is of great clinical importance. Deep learning has shown great promise in medical imaging, but the reliability and trustworthiness of AI systems limit their deployment in real clinical scenes, where patient safety is at stake. Uncertainty estimation plays a pivotal role in producing a confidence evaluation along with the prediction of the deep model. This is particularly important in medical imaging, where the uncertainty in the model's predictions can be used to identify areas of concern or to provide additional information to the clinician. In this paper, we review the various types of uncertainty in deep learning, including aleatoric uncertainty and epistemic uncertainty. We further discuss how they can be estimated in medical imaging. More importantly, we review recent advances in deep learning models that incorporate uncertainty estimation in medical imaging. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future directions in uncertainty estimation in deep learning for medical imaging. We hope this review will ignite further interest in the community and provide researchers with an up-to-date reference regarding applications of uncertainty estimation models in medical imaging.

High temperature and humidity affect the tribological performance of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) seals, which affects the precise positioning of cylinder systems. Therefore, it is crucial to study the effect of hydrothermal aging on the tribological performance of the NBR seals. In this study, the changes in the tribological performance of the NBR seals under hydrothermal aging conditions were investigated. The results show that the volatilization of additives and the increase in crosslink density of the NBR seals occurs in the hydrothermal aging environment, leading to the deterioration of their surface quality, elastic deformability, and tribological performance. The formation of surface micropores due to additive volatilization is the main factor in the degradation of tribological performance.

Abstract Background The aim of the study was to use a moderated mediation model to understand and examine the relationship between negative emotions and creativity among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic, using psychological resilience as a mediator and posttraumatic growth as a moderator. Methods A sample of 881 college students in mainland China completed a self-report questionnaire that included four scales: the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale, Psychological Resilience Scale, Runco Ideational Behavior Scale and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Results Findings indicated that:(1) negative emotions were a strong predictor of creativity; (2) psychological resilience partially mediated the association between negative emotions and creativity; and (3) posttraumatic growth moderated the positive effect of psychological resilience, such that the indirect effect between negative emotions and creativity via psychological resilience was stronger for someone with a low level of resilience. Conclusion The findings further clarify the mechanisms that affect the relationship between negative emotions and creativity among college students.
