1. Age structure and body size of two Tibetan toad (Bufo tibetanus) populations from different elevations in China

Abstract

Abstract Understanding how age and body size vary across elevations can provide insights into the evolution of life‐history traits in animals. In the present study, we compared the demographic (using skeletochronology) and morphological traits of the Tibetan toad (Bufo tibetanus) between two populations from different elevational habitats (2650 vs. 3930 m). We found that (1) the mean age and body size of females were significantly greater than those of males in both populations; (2) both sexes of toads from the higher elevation tended to be significantly older in age and larger in body size; (3) there was a significant positive relationship between age and body size within each sex of the toad at both elevations; and (4) growth rates varied between the two populations, with the higher rate observed in the lower‐elevation population. Our results suggested that factors other than age, such as elevation‐associated temperature, influence the observed differences in body size between the two populations. Future research at a broader range of elevations should focus on these factors and evaluate their influence on animal growth patterns.

Abstract

Natural killer cells (NKCs) are non-specific immune lymphocytes with diverse morphologies. Their broad killing effect on cancer cells has led to increased attention towards activating NKCs for anticancer immunotherapy. Consequently, understanding the motion characteristics of NKCs under different morphologies and modeling their collective dynamics under cancer cells has become crucial. However, tracking small NKCs in complex backgrounds poses significant challenges, and conventional industrial tracking algorithms often perform poorly on NKC tracking datasets. There remains a scarcity of research on NKC dynamics. In this paper, we utilize deep learning techniques to analyze the morphology of NKCs and their key points. After analyzing the shortcomings of common industrial multi-object tracking algorithms like DeepSORT in tracking natural killer cells, we propose Distance Cascade Matching and the Re-Search method to improve upon existing algorithms, yielding promising results. Through processing and tracking over 5000 frames of images, encompassing approximately 300,000 cells, we preliminarily explore the impact of NKCs’ cell morphology, temperature, and cancer cell environment on NKCs’ motion, along with conducting basic modeling. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: polarized cells are more likely to move along their polarization direction and exhibit stronger activity, and the maintenance of polarization makes them more likely to approach cancer cells; under equilibrium, NK cells display a Boltzmann distribution on the cancer cell surface.

Abstract

Abstract Following the design demands of the protective switch used in ±800 kV hybrid UHVDC system, a plasma‐triggered‐based protective gas switch (PTGS) is developed by performing the comparative study of its dynamic performance by considering the arc dynamic behaviour induced by the transverse magnetic field (TMF)‐based electrode used in the PTGS. The PTGS‐based electrode, as the core component, is designed with a helical‐slotted structure, the TMF could drive the arc between moving from the electrode centre to the electrode edge and then rotate rapidly along the edge. A 3D magnetohydrodynamic model (MHD) was established to computationally evaluate the effects of electrode structure variation on arc rotation characteristics. The model was verified by comparing the calculation results with experiments performed on the designed PTGS prototype. A comprehensive evaluation approach was also proposed to support the comparative analysis of the arc dynamic behaviour and estimate the arc‐controlling capability of the designed electrode to further assess the dynamic performance of the designed PTGS. This approach could quantitatively estimate the arc behaviour from a spatial scale, the variation of characterised parameters such as temperature associated with arc behaviour is concerned as well, which reasonably supports the electrode optimum design and the PTGS.

4. Phonon Pseudoangular Momentum in α-MoO3

Abstract

In recent studies, it has been discovered that phonons can carry angular momentum, leading to a series of investigations into systems with three-fold rotation symmetry. However, for systems with two-fold screw rotational symmetry, such as α-MoO3, there has been no relevant discussion. In this paper, we investigated the pseudoangular momentum of phonons in crystals with two-fold screw rotational symmetry. Taking α-MoO3 as an example, we explain the selection rules in circularly polarized Raman experiments resulting from pseudoangular momentum conservation, providing important guidance for experiments. This study of pseudoangular momentum in α-MoO3 opens up a new degree of freedom for its potential applications, expanding into new application domains.

Abstract

The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

Abstract

Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Abstract

Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

8. Gut microbiota of two invasive fishes respond differently to temperature

Abstract

Temperature variation structures the composition and diversity of gut microbiomes in ectothermic animals, key regulators of host physiology, with potential benefit to host or lead to converse results (i.e., negative). So, the significance of either effect may largely depend on the length of time exposed to extreme temperatures and how rapidly the gut microbiota can be altered by change in temperature. However, the temporal effects of temperature on gut microbiota have rarely been clarified. To understand this issue, we exposed two juvenile fishes (Cyprinus carpio and Micropterus salmoides), which both ranked among the 100 worst invasive alien species in the world, to increased environmental temperature and sampled of the gut microbiota at multiple time points after exposure so as to determine when differences in these communities become detectable. Further, how temperature affects the composition and function of microbiota was examined by comparing predicted metagenomic profiles of gut microbiota between treatment groups at the final time point of the experiment. The gut microbiota of C. carpio was more plastic than those of M. salmoides. Specifically, communities of C. carpio were greatly altered by increased temperature within 1 week, while communities of M. salmoides exhibit no significant changes. Further, we identified 10 predicted bacterial functional pathways in C. carpio that were temperature-dependent, while none functional pathways in M. salmoides was found to be temperature-dependent. Thus, the gut microbiota of C. carpio was more sensitive to temperature changes and their functional pathways were significantly changed after temperature treatment. These results showed the gut microbiota of the two invasive fishes differ in response to temperature change, which may indicate that they differ in colonization modes. Broadly, we have confirmed that the increased short-term fluctuations in temperatures are always expected to alter the gut microbiota of ectothermic vertebrates when facing global climate change.

Abstract

With the development of the flexible low frequency transmission technology following the improvement of offshore wind power transmission, it is of great significance to investigate the operation adaptability of the main equipment especially under the low frequency conditions. A comparative study was performed in the present work to discuss the dynamic operation performance of a 252 kV/50 kA puffer-type circuit breaker influenced by the system operational frequency. Since the decreased operational frequency would result in a longer arc duration, a pre-designed driving mechanism with characteristics of high speed control was proposed and compared with a conventional unit. Moreover, as one of the reasonable indicators to evaluate the interruption performance of the circuit breaker, the critical rate of rise of recovery voltage (RRRV) that the circuit breaker can withstand after the arc extinguishment under different low frequencies were computationally obtained by an established arc model. The effects of the frequency change on the arc dynamic characteristics during the interruption of circuit breaker were comprehensively discussed as well and it could reasonably provide technical optimisation for the development of low-frequency-based circuit breaker for further engineering applications by analysing its interruption feasibility.

Abstract

Two-dimensional van der Waals materials could be used as electron emitters alone or stacked in a heterostructure. Many significant phenomena of two-dimensional van der Waals field emitters have been observed and predicted since the landmark discovery of graphene. Due to the wide variety of heterostructures that integrate an atomic monolayer or multilayers with insulator nanofilms or metallic cathodes by van der Waals force, the diversity of van der Waals materials is large to be chosen from, which are appealing for further investigation. Until now, increasing the efficiency, stability, and uniformity in electron emission of cold cathodes with two-dimensional materials is still of interest in research. Some novel behaviors in electron emission, such as coherence and directionality, have been revealed by the theoretical study down to the atomic scale and could lead to innovative applications. Although intensive emission in the direction normal to two-dimensional emitters has been observed in experiments, the theoretical mechanism is still incomplete. In this paper, we will review some late progresses related to the cold cathodes with two-dimensional van der Waals materials, both in experiments and in the theoretical study, emphasizing the phenomena which are absent in the conventional cold cathodes. The review will cover the fabrication of several kinds of emitter structures for field emission applications, the state of the art of their field emission properties and the existing field emission model. In the end, some perspectives on their future research trend will also be given.

Abstract

Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract

Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

Abstract

A novel optical arrangement to generate a laser array line source of laser-generated ultrasound based on two-beam interference is proposed. The arrangement simplifies the adjustment of the laser array source period by changing the intersection angle of two interference beams. The performance of the arrangement is illustrated through measurements of the surface acoustic wave generated by the nanosecond laser array line source in aluminum metal. The surface acoustic wave generated by the laser line array source has stronger directivity parallel to the direction of the line source. The intensity of the measured surface acoustic wave is higher than that generated by a laser spot source with the same incident energy. The optical arrangement generating the laser array line source will be particularly advantageous in laser-generated ultrasound systems used for chemical corrosion detection.

Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

Abstract

The measurement for the surface electric field intensity of insulators based on electroluminescent effect is a non-contact measurement. By spraying a coating of epoxy paint mixed with ZnS:Cu electroluminescence powder on the surface of insulators, the part with high surface electric field intensity would be the first to glow. As the applied voltage increases, the area of luminous and the brightness increase. Therefore, the surface electric field distribution can be deduced by photographing and analyzing the luminescence of insulator surface coating. This method has successfully measured the surface electric field intensity distribution of disc insulators in GIL. Without the use of electric field probe, this method eliminates the electric field distortion caused by the probe completely. Besides, the permittivity of the coating can be decided according to the permittivity of the insulator material, and so eliminate the electric field distortion caused by the coating. The measure results of this method are in good agreement with reality.

Abstract

Vascular calcification (VC) is regarded as an important pathological change lacking effective treatment and associated with high mortality. Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) is a member of the Sirtuin family, a class III histone deacetylase and a key epigenetic regulator. SIRT6 has a protective role in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the exact role and molecular mechanism of SIRT6 in VC in patients with CKD remain unclear. Here, we demonstrated that SIRT6 was markedly downregulated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and in the radial artery tissue of patients with CKD with VC. SIRT6-transgenic (SIRT6-Tg) mice showed alleviated VC, while vascular smooth muscle cell–specific (VSMC-specific) SIRT6 knocked-down mice showed severe VC in CKD. SIRT6 suppressed the osteogenic transdifferentiation of VSMCs via regulation of runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2). Coimmunoprecipitation (co-IP) and immunoprecipitation (IP) assays confirmed that SIRT6 bound to Runx2. Moreover, Runx2 was deacetylated by SIRT6 and further promoted nuclear export via exportin 1 (XPO1), which in turn caused degradation of Runx2 through the ubiquitin-proteasome system. These results demonstrated that SIRT6 prevented VC by suppressing the osteogenic transdifferentiation of VSMCs, and as such targeting SIRT6 may be an appealing therapeutic target for VC in CKD.

Abstract Background To develop a low-dose cone beam CT (LD-CBCT) reconstruction method named simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique and dual-dictionary learning (SART-DDL) joint algorithm for image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and evaluate its imaging quality and clinical application ability. Methods In this retrospective study, 62 CBCT image sets from February 2018 to July 2018 at west china hospital were randomly collected from 42 head and neck patients (mean [standard deviation] age, 49.7 [11.4] years, 12 females and 30 males). All image sets were retrospectively reconstructed by SART-DDL (resultant D-CBCT image sets) with 18% less clinical raw projections. Reconstruction quality was evaluated by quantitative parameters compared with SART and Total Variation minimization (SART-TV) joint reconstruction algorithm with paired t test. Five-grade subjective grading evaluations were done by two oncologists in a blind manner compared with clinically used Feldkamp-Davis-Kress algorithm CBCT images (resultant F-CBCT image sets) and the grading results were compared by paired Wilcoxon rank test. Registration results between D-CBCT and F-CBCT were compared. D-CBCT image geometry fidelity was tested. Results The mean peak signal to noise ratio of D-CBCT was 1.7 dB higher than SART-TV reconstructions (P .05). In clinical registration, the maximum translational and rotational difference was 1.8 mm and 1.7 degree respectively. The horizontal, vertical and sagittal geometry fidelity of D-CBCT were acceptable. Conclusions The image quality, geometry fidelity and clinical application ability of D-CBCT are comparable to that of the F-CBCT for head-and-neck patients with 18% less projections by SART-DDL.

An integrated guidance and control (IGC) scheme considering the field-of-view (FOV) constraint is proposed in this paper for hypersonic skid-to-turn (STT) missiles with a strapdown seeker intercepting a high-speed maneuvering target, which is based on the backstepping control (BC), barrier Lyapunov function (BLF), sliding mode control (SMC), dynamic surface control (DSC), and reduced-order extended state observer (ESO). First, a fifth-order strict feedback IGC model considering the rudder delay dynamics is derived, which also considers the drag effect on the axial velocity. Second, the missile guidance control system based on the BC consists of seeker, guidance, angle-of-attack, attitude, and rudder subsystems. The seeker subsystem was designed based on the BLF, and the other four subsystems were designed based on the SMC. The system-lumped disturbances, including unknown target maneuvers, unmodeled parts, perturbations caused by aerodynamic parameter variations, and external disturbances, were estimated and compensated for using the reduced-order ESO. The DSC prevented the “differential explosion” caused by virtual control commands introduced by the BC. Subsequently, the stability of the closed-loop system was strictly proven using the Lyapunov theory, and the boundedness of the FOV angle was strictly derived. Finally, the simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed IGC scheme.

Bcl-2 family proteins play critical roles in regulating lymphocyte development and maintain homeostasis, and have also been proved to be involved in various cancer types development. However, the role of Bcl-2 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development has not been clearly studied. Here, we reported the pan-Bcl-2 inhibitor, obatoclax could directly inhibit HCC growth in vitro. We further demonstrated in murine HCC model that obatoclax also suppressed HCC development in vivo. We also proved that although obatoclax inhibited T cells expansion, it had no influence on T cells activation in vivo. Mechanism study revealed that obatoclax sensitized HCC cells to T cell-mediated killing. Combination therapy of obatoclax with anti-PD-1 antibody synergistically suppressed HCC development and prolonged the survival rate of tumor-bearing mice. The combination therapy promoted T cells activation and effector cytokines expression both in spleen and tumor. In summary, our results proved that obatoclax sensitized HCC cells to T cell -mediated killing. Combination of obatoclax with immune checkpoint blockade served as a promising therapeutic strategy for HCC treatment.

A plasma jet-triggered gas switch (PJT-GS) has been developed as an important piece of equipment to operate in an ±800 kV ultra-high voltage direct current transmission system (UHV DC) to achieve grid system protection and control. The crucial factors that would affect its operational performance, such as the current level the PJT-GS could withstand and the gas gap distance between the two rotating electrodes, are comparatively studied in the present work by analysing the arc dynamic characteristics. The rotating electrode used in the PJT-GS is designed with a helical-slotted structure, and the arc can be rotated circularly driven by the produced transverse magnetic field (TMF) along the electrode edge. The objective of such research is to provide a thorough study of the arc dynamic behaviour during the current flowing process of the PJT-GS and also to characterise the physical mechanism that affects the arc rotation and the PJT-GS operation performance. The magnetohydrodynamic-based (MHD) approach is applied by establishing a 3D arc model. Following such a study, the variation of arc characteristics under different operation conditions could be thoroughly determined and it also could provide the guidance for the PJT-GS optimum design reasonably to support its corresponding engineering applications.

23. Surface Modification via Dielectric Barrier Discharge Atmospheric Cold Plasma (DBD–ACP): Improved Functional Properties of Soy Protein Film

Abstract

Atmospheric cold plasma (ACP), a novel technology, has been widely adopted as an efficient approach in surface modification of the film. The effect of ACP treatment on the physicochemical and structural properties of soy protein film were investigated. As a result, the optimal conditions for the preparation of the film were determined for soy protein (10%), glycerol (2.8%), ACP treatment at 30 kV for 3 min, on the basis of elongation at the break, and water vapor permeability. Under the optimal conditions, the ACP–treated films exhibited enhanced polarity according to the increased values of solubility, swelling index, and moisture content, compared with the untreated counterpart. An increase in the hydrophilicity is also confirmed by the water contact angle analysis, which decreased from 87.9° to 77.2° after ACP pretreatment. Thermostability was also improved by ACP exposure in terms of DSC analysis. SEM images confirmed the tiny pores and cracks on the surface of film could be lessened by ACP pretreatment. Variations in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that some hydrophilic groups were formed by ACP pretreatment. Atomic force microscopy data revealed that the roughness of soy protein film which was pretreated by ACP was lower than that of the control group, with an Rmax value of 88.4 nm and 162.7 nm for the ACP- treated and untreated samples, respectively. The soy protein film was characterized structurally by FT–IR and DSC, and morphological characterization was done by SEM and AFM. The soy protein film modified by ACP was more stable than the control group. Hence, the great potential in improving the properties of the film enables ACP treatment to be a feasible and promising alternative to other modification methods.

Abstract

This research examines a cyclonic-anticyclonic eddy (AE) pair off Fraser Island next to the eastern Australian coast in 2009 using the Bluelink Reanalysis data, where the local eddies are poorly understood. This eddy pair formed in July and dissipated in November. We detailed the horizontal and vertical structures of the eddy pair in terms of three-dimensional variations in relative vorticity, hydrographic properties, velocity, and dynamic structures, which presented notable scales of the eddy pair. The AE formed beside the meandering of the East Australian Current (EAC) at 24°S and had a tilting structure in the upper 1,000 m toward the EAC. A cyclonic eddy (CE) formed a month later and interacted with the AE, which had a tilting structure toward the AE in the upper 1,000 m. Heterogeneity in the AE and CE composing this eddy pair was observed in the horizontal and vertical planes. The AE had a stronger and more coherent dynamic structure than the CE. The AE and the EAC interacted in the generation stage when the EAC path shifted eastward, away from the coast. As the EAC subsequently swung back to the coastal area, the AE and the EAC separated. The AE then interacted with the surrounding eddy fields, propagated westward, before finally merging again with the EAC. The energy transfer during this process also indicated the interactions among the eddy pair, the surrounding eddy fields and the EAC. Baroclinic instability (BCI) was a main contributor to the AE in the generation stage. Barotropic instability (BTI) also contributed energy to the AE when it interacted with the EAC but accounted for a much smaller proportion. Both BCI and BTI contributed to the CE for most of its life cycle but to a much less extend than to the AE. The zonal heat and salt mass transported by the AE and CE were calculated based on a Lagrangian framework method, and these amounts were considerable compared with global zonal averaged heat and salt mass transported by other mesoscale eddies.

Recently, the successful incorporation of artificial base pairs in genetics has made a significant progress in synthetic biology. The present work reports the proton transfer and photoisomerization of unnatural base pair ZP, which is synthesized from the pyrimidine analog 6-amino-5-nitro-3-(1-β-D-2′-deoxyribo-furanosyl)-2 (1H)-pyridone (Z) and paired with its Watson-Crick complement, the purine analog 2-amino-8-(1′-β-D-2′- deoxyribofuranosyl)-imidazo[1,2-a]-1,3,5-triazin-4(8H)-one (P). To explain the mechanism of proton transfer process, we constructed the relaxed potential energy surfaces (PESs) linking the different tautomers in both gas phase and solution. Our results show that the double proton transfer in the gas phase occurs in a concerted way both in S0 and S1 states, while the stepwise mechanism becomes more favorable in solution. The solvent effect can promote the single proton transfer, which undergoes a lower energy barrier in S1 state due to the strengthened hydrogen bond. In contrast to the excited state ultrafast deactivation process of the natural bases, there is no conical intersection between S0 and S1 states along the proton transfer coordinate to activate the decay mechanism in ZP. Of particular relevance to the photophysical properties, charge-transfer character is obviously related to the nitro rotation in S1 state. We characterized the molecular vibration effect on the electronic properties, which reveals the electronic excitation can be tuned by the rotation-induced structural distortion accompanied with the electron localization on nitro group.

Abstract

Image fusion and reconstruction from muldti-images taken by distributed or mobile cameras need accurate calibration to avoid image mismatching. This calibration process becomes difficult in fog when no clear nearby reference is available. In this work, the fusion of multi-view images taken in fog by two cameras fixed on a moving platform is realized. The positions and aiming directions of the cameras are determined by taking a close visible object as a reference. One camera with a large field of view (FOV) is applied to acquire images of a short-distance object which is still visible in fog. This reference is then adopted to the calibration of the camera system to determine the positions and pointing directions at each viewpoint. The extrinsic parameter matrices are obtained with these data, which are applied for the image fusion of distant images captured by another camera beyond visibility. The experimental verification was carried out in a fog chamber and the technique is shown to be valid for imaging reconstruction in fog without a prior in-plane. The synthetic image, accumulated and averaged by ten-view images, is shown to perform potential applicability for fog removal. The enhanced structure similarity is discussed and compared in detail with conventional single-view defogging techniques.

As a promising third-generation semiconductor, β-Ga2O3 is facing bottleneck for its p-type doping. We investigated the electronic structures and the stability of various Cu doped structures of β-Ga2O3. We found that Cu atoms substituting Ga atoms result in p-type conductivity. We derived the temperature and absolute oxygen partial pressure dependent formation energies of various doped structures based on first principles calculation with dipole correction. Then, the critical thermodynamic condition for forming the abovementioned substitutional structure was obtained.

Abstract

Epoxy resin samples were processed by one direction and multi-directions polishing methods in this research. The contact angles of the samples, the AC/DC flashover voltage in C4F7N/CO2 gas mixtures and the charge dissipation rate of the polished samples were measured. The results show that the contact angle of the polished epoxy resin sample increases. In the gas mixtures, the surface roughness modification of the epoxy resin under different voltage types is proposed. According to the charge dissipation rate, the development mechanism of creeping flashovers under different voltage is revealed. Different dissipative properties ultimately enhance the creeping discharge voltage of the samples by suppressing electron secondary electron emission. This paper offers a basis for insulation design in the C4F7N/CO2 gas mixture.

Abstract

Metal particles, difficult to be eliminated in gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear (GIS), can cause GIS discharge and breakdown between electrodes, or flashover on the insulator surface. It influences the development of ultra-high voltage (UHV) projects. Therefore, the work optimised the model of metal particle movement under AC voltage, studying the metal particle movement and distribution characteristics between ball-plane electrodes through experiment and simulation. Under AC voltage, the particle jumps on a small scale on the plane surface. With the increase of voltage, the jump amplitude increases. However, the collision frequency decreases until the particle collides with the ball electrode. When the initial phase angle of power changes, the particle-moving pattern is symmetrical in the angle ranging from 0 to 180°, and from 180 to 360°. The collision frequency changes slightly with the increase of jump amplitude when the angel ranges from 0 to 120°.

Abstract

In this paper, a radial basis neural network adaptive sliding mode controller (RBF−NN ASMC) for nonlinear electromechanical actuator systems is proposed. The radial basis function neural network (RBF−NN) control algorithm is used to compensate for the friction disturbance torque in the electromechanical actuator system. An adaptive law was used to adjust the weights of the neural network to achieve real−time compensation of friction. The sliding mode controller is designed to suppress the model uncertainty and external disturbance effects of the electromechanical actuator system. The stability of the RBF−NN ASMC is analyzed by Lyapunov’s stability theory, and the effectiveness of this method is verified by simulation. The results show that the control strategy not only has a better compensation effect on friction but also has better anti−interference ability, which makes the electromechanical actuator system have better steady−state and dynamic performance.

Abstract

Human body motion tracking is a key technique in robotics, virtual reality and other human–computer interaction fields. This paper proposes a novel simple-structure Kalman filter to improve the accuracy of human body motion tracking, named the Second EStimator of the Optimal Quaternion Kalman Filter (E2QKF). The new algorithm is the combination of the Second Estimator of the Optimal Quaternion (ESOQ-2) algorithm, the linear Kalman filter and the joint angle constraint method. In the proposed filter, the ESOQ-2 algorithm is used to produce an observation quaternion by preprocessing accelerometer and magnetometer measurements. The compensation for the accelerometer added in the ESOQ-2 algorithm is to eliminate the influence of human body motion acceleration included in the results. The state vector of the filter is the quaternion, which is calculated with gyroscope measurements, and the Kalman filter is to calculate the optimal quaternion by fusing the state quaternion and the observation quaternion. Therefore, the filter becomes a simple first-order linear system model, which avoids the linearization error of measurement equations and reduces the computational complexity. Furthermore, the joint angle constraint is considered in the proposed algorithm, which makes the results more accurate. To verify the accuracy of the proposed algorithm, inertial/magnetic sensors are used to perform the upper limb motion experiment, and the result of E2QKF (without joint angle constraint) is compared with an optical motion capture system and two traditional methods. Test results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed filter: the root mean square error (RMSE) of E2QKF is less than 2.0° and the maximum error is less than 4.6°. The result of E2QKF (with joint angle constraint) is compared with E2QKF (without joint angle constraint). Test results demonstrate the superiority of E2QKF (with joint angle constraint): the joint angle constraint method can further improve the accuracy of human body motion tracking.

32. Spin symmetry breaking and entropy production during the evolution of spinor Bose-Einstein condensate driven by coherent atom beam

Abstract

The spinor condensate with spin states degenerated in the ground spin-space provides a unique platform for investigating the edge of quantum mechanics and statistical physics. We study the evolution of the condensate under the scattering of a coherent atom beam. The time-dependent magnetization, entanglement entropy, statistical entropy, and the entropy production rate are calculated. A novel spontaneous spin symmetry breaking is found during the evolution. It is shown that the stationary spin distribution can be controlled by the coherent spin state of the incident atom beam, therefore the atom-condensate scattering provides a new way to generate designable spin distributions of the condensate.

Abstract

For spin-1 condensates, the spatial degrees of freedom can be considered as being frozen at temperature zero, while the spin-degrees of freedom remain free. Under this condition, the entanglement entropy has been derived exactly with an analytical form. The entanglement entropy is found to decrease monotonically with the increase of the magnetic polarization as expected. However, for the ground state in polar phase, an extremely steep fall of the entropy is found when the polarization emerges from zero. Then the fall becomes a gentle descent after the polarization exceeds a turning point.

Abstract

Enhanced plasma injection (EPI) driven by the electrical explosion of a metal wire in a microcavity has been proven to be an effective method for triggering 10-cm-magnitude high-pressure SF6 gas gap at very low working coefficients and provides a potential technical routine for ultrafast bypass switches (UFBPSs). In this study, aiming to further promote the EPI strength and improve its triggering ability, the EPI actuator is optimized, and several vital parameters of the actuator structure, including diameter D and length L of the microcavity and nozzle shape, are investigated. EPI with a maximum height of ∼10 cm and an initial velocity of ∼1000 m/s can be realized in 0.5 MPa SF6 when a 600 μm aluminum wire is exploded by a ∼1000 J trigger pulse. The EPI strength vs D curve has an inverted V shape, and 2 mm D results in the most intense EPI, due to the competitive effect of the vent congestion inside a thin capillary and parasitic volume in a fat capillary. As L increases, the EPI strength increases to saturation and then decreases. A 20–23 mm L can yield suitable EPI strength with limited trigger energy. The nozzle shape has a remarkable influence, and a divergent-type nozzle leads to a much stronger EPI than the shrink-type or straight-type nozzle, generating an EPI with a maximum height of 12 cm and an initial velocity of 1600 m/s. This study provides a useful guidance for the EPI actuator design for triggering megavolt UFBPSs at very low working coefficients.

Abstract

Free metallic particles are the main factor inducing flashover incidents and threatening the safety of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and gas-insulated transmission line (GIL) devices. Acoustic diagnosis is widely used to detect free metal particles due to its high sensitivity, but it generally fails under multiple particle conditions because of the overlap of acoustic signals. This paper proposes a new method of acoustically recognizing multiple free metallic particles. The pattern of t-Normalized N that can be used to distinguish single/multi-particles is determined first. Second, each particles neighboring collision signals are extracted from raw data by the established physical relation between adjacent collision signals. Finally, the free metal spherical double-particles mass and density values are calculated as per the numerical connection between adjacent collision signals. The proposed method is validated in a scale concentric hemisphere platform. The results of this work may provide a workable reference for GIS free metal multi-particle monitoring.

45. Complementary interactions between indirect and direct fitness in a cooperatively breeding bird

Altruism is difficult to explain evolutionarily and to understand it, there is a need to quantify the benefits and costs to altruists. Hamilton’s theory of kin selection argues that altruism can persist if the costs to altruists are offset by indirect fitness payoffs from helping related recipients. Nevertheless, helping nonkin is also common and in such situations, the costs must be compensated for by direct benefits. While previous researchers tended to evaluate the indirect and direct fitness in isolation, we expect that they have a complementary interaction where altruists are associated with recipients of different relatedness within a population. The prediction is tested with 12 years of data on lifetime reproductive success for a cooperatively breeding bird, Tibetan ground tits Pseudopodoces humilis. Helpers who helped distantly related recipients gained significantly lower indirect benefits than those who helped closely related recipients, but the opposite was true for direct fitness, thereby making these helpers have an equal inclusive fitness. Helping efforts were independent of helpers’ relatedness to recipients, but those helping distantly related recipients were more likely to inherit the resident territory, which could be responsible for their high direct reproductive success. Our findings provide an explanatory model for the widespread coexistence of altruists and recipients with varying relatedness within a single population.
