Abstract This study was performed to investigate the diagnostic value of radiomics models constructed by fat suppressed T2-weighted imaging (T2WI-FS) and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging (CET1) based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for differentiation of osteosarcoma (OS) and chondrosarcoma (CS). In this retrospective cohort study, we included all inpatients with pathologically confirmed OS or CS from Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University (Hunan, China) as of October 2020. Demographic and imaging variables were extracted from electronic medical records and compared between OS and CS group. Totals of 530 radiomics features were extracted from CET1 and T2WI-FS sequences based on MRI. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method was used for screening and dimensionality reduction of the radiomics model. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to construct the radiomics model, and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was generated to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the radiomics model. The training cohort and validation cohort included 87 and 29 patients, respectively. 8 CET1 features and 15 T2WI-FS features were screened based on the radiomics features. In the training group, the area under the receiver-operator characteristic curve (AUC) value for CET1 and T2WI-FS sequences in the radiomics model was 0.894 (95% CI 0.817–0.970) and 0.970 (95% CI 0.940–0.999), respectively. In the validation group, the AUC value for CET1 and T2WI-FS sequences in the radiomics model was 0.821 (95% CI 0.642–1.000) and 0.899 (95% CI 0.785–1.000), respectively. In this study, we developed a radiomics model based on T2WI-FS and CET1 sequences to differentiate between OS and CS. This model exhibits good performance and can help clinicians make decisions and optimize the use of healthcare resources.

This work aimed to develop a high-throughput analytical method based on QuEChERS coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) for the determination of 13 mycotoxins in plant-solid beverages. The samples were homogenized and dissolved in water. QuEChERS method was used for pretreatment, ultrasonic extraction with 2% formic acid-acetonitrile solution, and purification with octadecylsilane bonded silica gel (C18). The extraction solution was then separated by a Kinetex F5 column, detected by a tandem mass spectrometry detector in multiple reaction monitoring mode (MRM), and quantified by matrix-matched standard calibration. The optimum conditions achieved limits of detections (LODs) in the range of 0.04~16.9 μg/kg, with correlation coefficient over 0.9916. The limit of quantifications (LOQs) were in the range 0.12~38.2 μg/kg. The recoveries in real plant-solid beverages ranged from 82.2% to 103.3%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 9.0%. Moreover, the proposed method was applied to analyze mycotoxins in 18 plant-solid beverage samples, a positive detection rate of 4/18 was obtained, and the detected analytes included deoxynivalenol and fumonisin B3. This proposed method has the advantages of simple operation, low cost, high sensitivity and accuracy, which can be used for the high-throughput screening of multiple mycotoxins in plant-solid beverages.

Abstract Background Zuogui Wan (ZGW) is a traditional herbal formula used to treat chronic kidney and bone diseases. Previous research has shown that ZGW slows down the aging process of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and improves bone metabolism. However, its role in treating postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) has not yet been fully investigated. Therefore, we investigated the therapeutic effects of ZGW and its potential mechanisms in an ovariectomy (OVX)-induced osteoporosis rat model. Results We observed significant improvements in bone loss and the osteoporotic phenotype in OVX rats treated with ZGW. These findings were confirmed with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histomorphological analysis. We also discovered that ZGW reversed the macrophage imbalance, which in turn inhibited osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption. Furthermore, RNA-Seq results revealed the active expression of CD51 in BMSCs before and after ZGW therapy, which is associated with macrophage polarization and osteoblastic differentiation. The results also showed that ZGW decreased CD51 + BMSCs levels, which is closely related to the inhibition of osteoblast differentiation and promotion of osteoclast resorption. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that ZGW may improve postmenopausal osteoporosis by restoring macrophage polarization and down-regulating CD51 + BMSCs. In addition, ZGW promoted osteoblast formation and inhibited osteoclast resorption.

Objective Clinical validity of genome sequencing (GS) (>30×) has been preliminarily verified in the post-natal setting. This study is to investigate the potential utility of trio-GS as a prenatal test for diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) anomalies.Methods We performed trio-based GS on a prospective cohort of 17 foetuses with CNS abnormalities. Single nucleotide variation (SNV), small insertion and deletion (Indel), copy number variation (CNV), structural variant (SV), and regions with absence of heterozygosity (AOH) were analyzed and classified according to ACMG guidelines.Results Trio-GS identified diagnostic findings in 29.4% (5/17) of foetuses, with pathogenic variants found in SON, L1CAM, KMT2D, and ASPM. Corpus callosum (CC) and cavum septum pellucidum (CSP) abnormalities were the most frequent CNS abnormalities (47.1%, 8/17) with a diagnostic yield of 50%. A total of 29.4% (5/17) foetuses had variants of uncertain significance (VUS). Particularly, maternal uniparental disomy 16 and a de novo mosaic 4p12p11 duplication were simultaneously detected in one foetus with abnormal sulcus development. In addition, parentally inherited chromosomal inversions were identified in two foetuses.Conclusion GS demonstrates its feasibility in providing genetic diagnosis for foetal CNS abnormalities and shows the potential to expand the application to foetuses with other ultrasound anomalies in prenatal diagnosis.

Abstract The interlayer stacking modes of 2D covalent‐organic frameworks (COFs) directly influence their structural features, ultimately determining their functional output. However, controllably modulating the interlayer stacking structure in traditional 2D metal‐free COFs, based on the same building blocks, remains challenging. Here, two trinuclear copper organic frameworks are synthesized successfully with different interlayer stacking structures: eclipsed AA stacking in Cu3‐PA‐COF‐AA and staggered ABC stacking in Cu3‐PA‐COF‐ABC, using the same monomers. Remarkably, various functionalities, including porosity and electronic and optical properties, can be effectively regulated by interlayer stacking. As a result, Cu3‐PA‐COF‐AA and Cu3‐PA‐COF‐ABC exhibit significantly different activities toward the photoreduction of U(VI), presenting a promising strategy for removing radioactive uranium pollution. Due to its broader visible‐light absorption range and superior photogenerated carrier migration and separation efficiency, Cu3‐PA‐COF‐AA achieves a U(VI) removal ratio of 93.6% without additional sacrificial agents in an air atmosphere—≈2.2 times higher than that of Cu3‐PA‐COF‐ABC (42.0%). To the best of the knowledge, this is the first study to elucidate the effect of interlayer stacking in COFs on the photocatalytic activity of U(VI) reduction. This finding may inspire further exploration of the structure‐function relationship in COFs as photocatalysts and their potential for photoinduced removal of radionuclides.

The world is experiencing unprecedented urbanization, particularly through the continuous growth of megacities, leading to significant urban land expansion. The spatial layout and growth patterns of urban areas play a critical role in determining cities' sustainable development. However, the optimal path for cities undergoing rapid urbanization remains uncertain. This study examines four megacities—Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, and Shanghai—and, from the perspective of urban land density, compares their patterns and processes of land expansion in 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020. Findings reveal that the urban land area of China's megacities has expanded nearly fourfold over the past three decades. Meanwhile, Tokyo and Seoul have adopted a polycentric urban structure, becoming increasingly compact. In contrast, Beijing and Shanghai are only beginning to show signs of polycentric development. The study concludes that cities experiencing rapid growth should not impose excessive limitations on urban expansion. Polycentric and compact development has become a critical strategy for megacities. These insights offer valuable guidance for urban planning and sustainable development in both established and emerging megacities across East Asia.

Bi(Te, Se)-based compounds have attracted lots of attention for nearly two centuries as one of the most successful commercial thermoelectric (TE) materials due to their high performance at near room temperature. Compared with 3D bulks, 2D thin films are more compatible with modern semiconductor technology and have unique advantages in the construction of micro- and nano-devices. For device applications, high average TE performance over the entire operating temperature range is critical. Herein, highly c-axis-oriented N-type Bi(Te, Se) epitaxial thin films have been successfully prepared using the pulsed laser deposition technology by adjusting the deposition temperature. The film deposited at ∼260 °C demonstrate a remarkable average power factor (PFave) of ∼24.4 μW·cm−1·K−2 over the temperature range of 305–470 K, higher than most of the state-of-the-art Bi(Te, Se)-based films. Moreover, the estimated average zT value of the film is as high as ∼0.81. We then constructed thin-film TE devices by using the above oriented Bi(Te, Se) films, and the maximum output power density of the device can reach up to ∼30.1 W/m2 under the temperature difference of 40 K. Predictably, the outstanding average TE performance of the highly oriented Bi(Te, Se) thin films will have an excellent panorama of applications in semiconductor cooling and power generation.

The safe operation of high-speed rail running gear is crucial, as fault diagnosis can effectively prevent potential risks and ensure the smooth operation of the train. The Belief Rule Base (BRB) method has demonstrated excellent performance in complex system modeling. However, during the optimization process, BRB may lead to a “combinatorial explosion” of rules within the model, resulting in a loss of model interpretability and an increase in complexity. To address this, a Multidimensional Belief Rule Base (MBRB) fault diagnosis method is proposed. By optimizing the structure and parameters, the interpretability of the model is enhanced, and its complexity is reduced. Specifically, the model inputs are decomposed into multiple dimensions for analysis, and then the MBRB rules are updated using the Projection Covariance Matrix Adaption Evolution Strategy (P-CMA-ES), increasing the model’s interpretability and accuracy. Finally, the effectiveness of this method is validated through an example of high-speed rail running gear.

As a fundamental task in remote sensing earth observation, hyperspectral change detection (HCD) aims to identify the changed pixels in bitemporal hyperspectral images. However, the water-absorption effect, poor weather conditions, noise and inconsistent illumination as well as lack of accurate ground truth has made HCD particularly challenging. To tackle these challenges, a novel Accumulated Band-wise Binary Distancing (ABBD) model was proposed for unsupervised parameter-free HCD. Rather than relying on the absolute pixel difference with thresholding in conventional approaches, the binary distancing only indicated whether a pixel was changed or not in a certain band, which could alleviate the adverse effects of noise-induced inconsistency of measurement. The band-wise binary distance map is then accumulated to form a grayscale change map, on which the simple k-means was applied for a final binary decision-making. Experiments on three publicly available datasets have validated the superiority of our approach, which has yielded comparable or slightly better results in comparison to a few state-of-the-art methods including several deep learning models.

In this study, the precipitation transformation and age hardening of solution-treated Mg-9Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.5Zr(wt.%) alloy were investigated at different aging treatment parameters. The precipitation sequences of the alloy aged at 200 ℃, 250 ℃ and 300 ℃ are β″(DO19) → β′(BCO) → β(FCC), β″(DO19) → β′(BCO) → β1(FCC) → β(FCC) and β(FCC), respectively. The streaks sequences of the alloy aged at 200 ℃, 250 ℃ and 300 ℃ are SF, SF → 14H-LPSO and SF → 14H-LPSO, respectively. For the alloy aged at 200 ℃ and 250 ℃, the increase in hardness with increasing aging time is contributed from the increase in precipitate volume fraction and the transformation from β′′ to β′ phase with basal → prismatic and spherical → spindle-like precipitate changes. The decrease in hardness after the peak-aging stage is attributed to the appearance of micro-sized β precipitates. Because of the smaller size of precipitates and the triangular arrangement of β′ precipitate, the hardness of the alloy aged at 200 ℃ is higher than that aged at 250 ℃. For the alloy aged at 300 ℃, the appearance of only micro-sized β precipitate and its coarsening with increasing aging time leads to the lowest hardness and an overall decrease in hardness with the aging time.

The running gear mechanism is a critical component of high-speed trains, essential for maintaining safety and stability. Malfunctions in the running gear can have severe consequences, making it imperative to assess its condition accurately. Such assessments provide insights into the current operational status, facilitating timely maintenance and ensuring the reliable and safe operation of high-speed trains. Traditional evidential reasoning models for assessing the health of running gear typically require the integration of multiple characteristic indicators, which are often challenging to obtain and may lack comprehensiveness. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel assessment model that combines evidential reasoning with multidimensional fault conclusions. This model synthesizes results from various fault diagnoses to establish a comprehensive health indicator system for the running gear. The diagnostic outcomes serve as inputs to the model, which then assesses the overall health status of the running gear system. To address potential inaccuracies in initial model parameters, the covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) algorithm is utilized for parameter optimization. Comparative experiments with alternative methods demonstrate that the proposed model offers superior accuracy and reliability in assessing the health status of high-speed train running gear.

Abstract Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) has an important role in treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis. The vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are a major part of the atherosclerotic plaque. However, the biological functions of Tan IIA in regulating VSMCs function remain mostly unclear. This research aimed at identifying the explicit molecular mechanism that Tan IIA regulates oxidized low‐density lipoprotein (ox‐LDL)‐mediated VSMC proliferation and migration. VSMCs challenged by ox‐LDL were adopted as cellular model of atherosclerosis, and suffered from Tan IIA treatment. After that, cells proliferation, apoptosis or migration were measured. The expression levels of microRNA (miR)‐137, transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily C member 3 (TRPC3) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were measured. The targeting relationship between miR‐137 and TRPC3 was determined. It was found that Tan IIA blunted VSMC proliferation, PCNA expression and migration mediated by ox‐LDL. Tan IIA promoted miR‐137 level, and miR‐137 knockdown reversed the influences of Tan IIA on VSMC proliferation, PCNA expression and migration in the presence of ox‐LDL. TRPC3 was verified to be targeted by miR‐137. Moreover, TRPC3 silencing exacerbated the influences of Tan IIA on VSMC proliferation, apoptosis and migration, and it mitigated the inhibitive effects of miR‐137 knockdown on function of Tan IIA. We confirmed for the first time that Tan IIA constrained ox‐LDL‐stimulated VSMC proliferation and migration via regulating the miR‐137/TRPC3 axis, which provided a theoretical basis for the research and promotion of Tan IIA as a therapeutic drug.

Objective: To investigate the shift in the oral microbiota of periodontitis patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) undergoing nonsurgical periodontal treatment and its implications. Methods: Eleven patients with chronic periodontitis and eleven patients with chronic periodontitis and diabetes from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University received nonsurgical periodontitis treatment and were re-evaluated 3 months later. DNA from the saliva and subgingival plaques was amplified and sequenced using 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene sequencing for microbiome profiling. Clinical indexes at the onset and after periodontal therapy were recorded and compared. Results: The species richness and dominant microbiota of periodontitis patients with and without T2DM changed significantly after nonsurgical periodontal treatment in both saliva and subgingival plaques. The periodontal condition of the patients was also effectively improved three months after therapy. Glycemic control in patients with periodontitis and T2DM was improved. Additionally, nonsurgical periodontal therapy could increase in subgingival microbial diversity and the proportion of health-associated bacteria but a proportional reduction in pathogenic bacteria in periodontitis patients with T2DM. Network analysis revealed fewer links and a lower level of centralization in the chronic periodontitis (CP) group after treatment. However, more links and a higher network density of the networks were found in the CP + T2DM group, suggesting a more stable microbial community after treatment. Conclusions: There were significant differences in both the structural composition and reaction of the oral microbiota to periodontal treatment between periodontitis patients with and without T2DM. Nonsurgical periodontal treatment can improve metabolic control, decrease the proportion of periodontal pathogens in oral conditions, and help stabilize microbial communities in patients with periodontitis and T2DM. Furthermore, nonsurgical periodontal treatment may be a potential supplementary approach for managing T2DM.

Abstract Background Whole-exome sequencing (WES) is an effective method in the prenatal setting for identification of the underlying genetic etiology of fetal ultrasound abnormalities. To investigate the diagnostic value of WES in fetuses with ultrasound abnormalities that resulted in fetal demise or pregnancy termination. Methods 61 deceased fetuses with ultrasound abnormalities and normal copy number variation Sequencing were retrospectively collected. Proband-only or trio-WES were performed on the products of conception. Result Collectively, 28 cases were positive with 39 variants (10 pathogenic, 22 likely pathogenic and 7 variants of uncertain significance) of 18 genes, and the overall diagnostic rate was 45.9% (28/61), of which 39.2% (11/28) were de novo variants. In addition, 21 variants in 11 genes among the positive cases had not been previously reported. The diagnostic yield for definitive findings for trio analysis was 55.9% (19/34) compared to 33.3% (9/27) for singletons. The most common ultrasound abnormalities were skeletal system abnormalities 39.2% (11/28), followed by multiple system abnormalities (17.9%, 5/28) and genitourinary abnormalities (17.9%, 5/28). Conclusion Our results support the use of WES to identify genetic etiologies of ultrasound abnormalities and improve understanding of pathogenic variants. The identification of disease-related variants provided information for subsequent genetic counseling of recurrence risk and management of subsequent pregnancies.

In order to reduce the influence of ground vibration generated by tractors during driving and operation on driving stability and driver ’s ride comfort, this paper proposes a tractor active seat suspension control method based on model predictive control (MPC). Through the establishment of three degrees of freedom tractor active seat suspension model, electromagnetic actuator (linear motor) model and ground excitation input model, the inner and outer loop control strategy of linear motor active seat suspension based on outer loop MPC control and inner loop current hysteresis comparison control is proposed. The influence of MPC parameters on the vibration performance and control cost of seat suspension is compared and analyzed through experiments. The appropriate system parameters are selected through optimization analysis. The simulation and experimental results show that compared with the passive seat suspension and PID seat suspension, the tractor active seat suspension based on model predictive control improves the ride comfort and vibration reduction characteristics of the tractor, and on this basis, it reduces the energy consumption required for the seat suspension system to achieve active control, while ensuring the timeliness of MPC control.

In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to fuel cell-based hybrid tractors. In order to optimize the global power distribution of tractors and further improve the fuel economy and fuel cell durability of the system, this paper designs an energy management strategy to maximize external energy efficiency based on fuel cell/lithium battery/supercapacitor hybrid tractors. This strategy aims to reduce the real-time hydrogen consumption of the system while maximizing the external energy output so as to reduce the impact of load randomness on the output power of the fuel cell. Under the typical ploughing conditions of the tractor, the simulation is compared with the state machine strategy and the equivalent hydrogen consumption minimization strategy. The results show that the proposed strategy meets the power requirements of a given ploughing condition, and compared with the two traditional strategy systems, the performance characteristics of auxiliary energy are more fully exerted. It reduces the burden on fuel cells and improves the durability of fuel cells. The hydrogen consumption of the system was reduced by 11.03 g and 16.54 g, respectively, improving the overall economy of the hybrid system.

Objective In order to reduce surgical scars and the risk of neurovascular injury for the treatment of terrible triad injuries of the elbow (TTI), minimally invasive and better therapeutic effect approaches are being explored to replace the conventional combined lateral and medial approach (CLMA). This study was performed to compare the clinical effect and security of the modified posterior approach (MPA) through the space of the proximal radioulnar joint vs the CLMA for treatment of TTI. Methods This study retrospectively analyzed 76 patients treated for TTI from January 2009 to December 2020 (MPA: n = 44; CLMA: n = 32). Treatment involved plate and screw fixation or Steinmann pin fixation for the radial head and ulnar coronoid process fractures. Surgeons only sutured the lateral ligament because the medial collateral ligament was usually integrated in the TTI. The continuous variables were compared by the independent Student t‐test and the categorical variables by the χ2‐test or Fisher's exact test. Results Both groups of patients attained a satisfactory MEPS after the operation. The MEPS (MPA: 96.82 ± 6.04 vs CLMA: 96.56 ± 5.51) was not significantly different between the two groups (p > 0.05). However, the MPA resulted in better elbow flexion and extension (MPA: 123.98 ± 10.09 vs CLMA: 117.66 ± 8.29), better forearm rotation function (MPA: 173.41 ± 6.81 vs CLMA: 120.00 ± 12.18), and less intraoperative hemoglobin (MPA: 9.34 ± 5.64 vs CLMA: 16.5 ± 8.75) and red cell volume loss (MPA: 3.09 ± 2.20 vs CLMA: 6.70 ± 2.97) (All p

The morphology of urban residential blocks in China, which is strictly affected by regulations, can potentially improve or deteriorate microclimates. This paper first proposes a framework for identifying typical residential block typologies using Nanjing as an example. A thorough investigation, consisting of 114 samples, was conducted, and 18 typical residential block typologies were summarized. Second, 3D non-isothermal numerical simulations were performed on the hottest days of summer using the ENVI-met. The effect of morphological indices on the microclimate at the pedestrian level was explored using statistical methods and a novel graphic method named m-SpaceMate. The results revealed a strong correlation between the urban heat island intensity (UHII), mean radiation temperature, and universal thermal climate index (UTCI) and floor area ratio (FAR), as well as between wind velocity (U) and building coverage ratio (BCR). A significant increase in FAR (by approximately 1.0) can result in a low UTCI that was driven by MRT and shading conditions. Six-floor blocks, with FAR between 1.8 and 2.1, had a better overall thermal environment (except for lower U) than that of 11-floor blocks. When considering a similar BCR, blocks with slab-type buildings tended to have a U that was higher by approximately 30%.

The reliability of gearboxes is extremely important for the normal operation of mechanical equipment. This paper proposes an optimized long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network fault diagnosis method. Additionally, a feature extraction method is employed, utilizing variational mode decomposition (VMD) and permutation entropy (PE). Firstly, the gear vibration signal is subjected to feature decomposition using VMD. Secondly, PE is calculated as a feature quantity output. Next, it is input into the improved LSTM fault diagnosis model, and the LSTM parameters are iteratively optimized using the chameleon search algorithm (CSA). Finally, the output of the fault diagnosis results is obtained. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the method exceeds 97.8%.

Abstract Background To determine the characteristics of cross-pin protrusion in patients treated with the reverse Rigidfix femoral fixation device for femoral tunnel preparation through the anteromedial portal in Arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), analyse the reasons for this outcome, and identify safety hazards of this surgical technique for improvement. Methods A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent ACLR using this technology at our hospital in 2018 was conducted. Patients with and without cross-pin protrusion were included in the protrusion positive and negative groups, respectively. The sex, age and imaging characteristics of the patients with cross-pin protrusion were identified, and the reasons for cross-pin protrusion were analysed. Results There were 64 and 212 patients in the protrusion positive and negative groups, respectively. The proportion of cross-pin protrusion cases was 23.19% (64/276). Abstract Background Metabolic reprogramming has been reported in various kinds of cancers and is related to clinical prognosis, but the prognostic role of pyrimidine metabolism in gastric cancer (GC) remains unclear. Methods Here, we employed DEG analysis to detect the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in pyrimidine metabolic signaling pathway and used univariate Cox analysis, Lasso-penalizes Cox regression analysis, Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis to explore their prognostic roles in GC. The DEGs were experimentally validated in GC cells and clinical samples by quantitative real-time PCR. Results Through DEG analysis, we found NT5E, DPYS and UPP1 these three genes are highly expressed in GC. This conclusion has also been verified in GC cells and clinical samples. A prognostic risk model was established according to these three DEGs by Univariate Cox analysis and Lasso-penalizes Cox regression analysis. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis suggested that patient cohorts with high risk score undertook a lower overall survival rate than those with low risk score. Stratified survival analysis, Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis of this model confirmed that it is a reliable and independent clinical factor. Therefore, we made nomograms to visually depict the survival rate of GC patients according to some important clinical factors including our risk model. Conclusion In a word, our research found that pyrimidine metabolism is dysregulated in GC and established a prognostic model of GC based on genes differentially expressed in pyrimidine metabolism.

This study proposed an effective plastic deformation technique, rotating backward extrusion (RBE), for producing high performance AZ80 magnesium alloy cup-shaped pieces. The RBE process was carried on the Gleeble-3500 test machine at 653 K, and the conventional backward extrusion (CBE) was also conducted for comparison. A detailed microstructure analysis was performed using the optical microscopy (OM) and electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). The results shown that the equivalent strain and deformation uniformity of the cup pieces could be substantially increased by the RBE process compared with the CBE process. Furthermore, the RBE process could significantly improve the grain refining capacity and the proportion of dynamic recrystallization (DRX), of which the maximum reduction of grain size was 88.60%, and the maximum increase of DRX proportion was 55.30% in the cup bottom. The main deformation mechanism of the RBE process was the discontinuous DRX (DDRX), while the continuous DRX (CDRX) was also occurred in the cup transition. Compared with the CBE sample, the texture of the cup bottom was weakened for the RBE sample. The microhardness value of the RBE sample was higher than that of the CBE sample, which can be attributed to the grain refinement strengthening.

AbstractTo identify the factors controlling high-quality deep shale gas reservoirs and the exploration and development potential of the Lower Paleozoic marine shale in the Sichuan Basin, the sedimentary environment of deep shale was comprehensively analysed using core thin sections, scanning electron microscopy, gamma ray spectrometry logging, and elemental logging data. In addition, the geological conditions of deep shale gas accumulation and the effect of tectonic processes on the preservation conditions are discussed based on the experimental data of mineral composition analysis, geochemical features, and reservoir spatial characteristics. (1) The sedimentary environment changes from an anoxic water environment to an oxygen-rich oxidizing environment from bottom to top in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in southern Sichuan. The deep shale gas reservoir shows overpressure and rich gas characteristics, namely, high formation pressure (2.0~2.2), high porosity (20%~55%), and high gas content (4.0~5.0 m3/t). (2) The favourable sedimentary environment has a higher hydrocarbon generation potential and deposits of rich organic matter and siliceous particles. During the hydrocarbon generation process, the rich organic matter generates a large number of organic pores and a large specific surface area, which provides the main reservoir and adsorption space for free and adsorbed shale gas. A large number of biogenic siliceous particles provide a solid rock support framework for the shale reservoir, thereby maintaining excellent reservoir physical properties. (3) Late and small stratigraphic uplifts result in a short shale gas escape time and favourable preservation conditions. Additionally, the small-scale faults and a high-angle intersection between the fracture strike and the geostress direction are conducive to the preservation of shale gas. (4) A high formation pressure coefficient, a sedimentary environment rich in organic siliceous deep-water continental shelf microfacies, and a relatively stable tectonic structure are conducive to the accumulation of deep shale gas.

Abstract Stimuli‐responsive supercapacitors have attracted broad interest in constructing self‐powered smart devices. However, due to the demand for high cyclic stability, supercapacitors usually utilize stable or inert electrode materials, which are difficult to exhibit dynamic or stimuli‐responsive behavior. Herein, this issue is addressed by designing a MoS2@carbon core‐shell structure with ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets incorporated in the carbon matrix. In the three‐electrode system, MoS2@carbon delivers a specific capacitance of 1302 F g−1 at a current density of 1.0 A g−1 and shows a 90% capacitance retention after 10 000 charging‐discharging cycles. The MoS2@carbon‐based asymmetric supercapacitor displays an energy density of 75.1 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 900 W kg−1. Because the photo‐generated electrons can efficiently migrate from MoS2 nanosheets to the carbon matrix, the assembled photo‐responsive supercapacitor can answer the stimulation of ultraviolet‐visible‐near infrared illumination by increasing the capacitance. Particularly, under the stimulation of UV light (365 nm, 0.08 W cm−2), the device exhibits a ≈4.50% (≈13.9 F g−1) increase in capacitance after each charging‐discharging cycle. The study provides a guideline for designing multi‐functional supercapacitors that serve as both the energy supplier and the photo‐detector.

Abstract Background Balanced reciprocal translocation is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities in humans that may lead to infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, or having children with physical or mental abnormalities. Karyotyping and FISH are traditional detection approaches with a low resolution. Bionano optical genome mapping (OGM) developed in recent years can be used to analyze chromosomal abnormalities at a higher resolution, providing the possibility of more in‐depth analyses of balanced chromosome translocations. Methods To evaluate the feasibility of OGM to detect chromosome balanced translocations, 10 genetic outpatients were collected and detected simultaneously by karyotype analysis, FISH, CNV‐seq, and Bionano OGM in this study. Results The results showed that the karyotypes of the patients were detected by karyotype analysis, FISH, and Bionano OGM, but one patient with karyotype t(Y,19) was not correctly detected by OGM. There were not find any chromosome abnormality by CNV‐seq. More importantly, OGM allowed the location of the mutation to the gene level, which is important for aiding diagnoses, compared to karyotype analysis, and FISH. Conclusions This study shows that OGM can be a high adjunctive diagnostic method for detecting balanced chromosome translocations, but the accuracy and precision of OGM detecting mutations need to be gradually improved in telomere and centromere regions.

Fractures have significantly impacted the preservation, enrichment, and productivity of shale gas in the Longmaxi Formation in the complex structural area of the southern Sichuan Basin. Based on outcrop, core, imaging logging, inclusion analysis, acoustic emission experiments, and burial and thermal evolution history data, the formation stage, evolution and preservation conditions of structural fractures were comprehensively studied. Shear fractures are the main features of tectonic origin and are characterized by small widths, wide spacing, and high filling degrees. The structural fractures of the Longmaxi Formation can be divided into three groups in terms of their formation stage. The first-stage fractures were formed in the middle-late period of the Yanshanian tectonic movement (86.2–68.5 Ma), when the palaeotectonic stress was 68.33–71.82 MPa; and the homogenization temperature of the fluid inclusions in the corresponding fracture fillings is 150–178°C. The second-stage fractures were formed at the end of the Yanshanian -early Himalayan tectonic movement (68.5–35.2 Ma), when the palaeotectonic stress was 85.2–100.5 MPa; the homogenization temperature of the corresponding fluid inclusions is 123–148°C. The third-stage tectonic fractures formed during the middle-late period of the Himalayan tectonic movement (35.2–0 Ma), when the palaeotectonic stress was 55.6–63.8 MPa; fillings are scarce in these fractures, but the measured homogenization temperature of the corresponding fluid inclusions is 90–110°C. Shale gas preservation conditions were affected by the fracture formation stage, maximum horizontal crustal stress, fault scale, structural burial depth, formation pressure coefficient, etc. Three types of favourable preservation conditions were identified. The Type I target area is the low slope area in the middle of the syncline, which occurs more than 2.0 km from the fault. The research results have guiding significance for the evaluation of the preservation conditions of deep shale gas in the study area and similar areas.

The southern Sichuan Basin is the core area of China’s efficient development of deep shale gas (burial depth greater than 3,500 m). Reservoir geological characteristics determine whether shale gas can be preserved, enriched, and produced. Taking the Long 11 sub-member of the Wufeng Formation of the Upper Ordovician and the Longmaxi Formation of the Lower Silurian in the East Weiyuan–North Rongchang area as an example, we used the core, logging, production test, and other data, combining X-ray diffraction analysis, LECO Total Organic Carbon (TOC)-S analysis, optical microscopy, and argon ion polishing field-emission scanning electron microscopy, to study the shale mineral composition, geochemistry, reservoir space, pore structure characteristics, and reservoir physical properties. The following results were obtained: 1) The brittle mineral content, organic matter maturity, and TOC content are high, gradually increase from top to bottom, and reach their maxima at small layer 1 of Long 11. 2) Organic pores, inorganic pores, and fractures are important reservoir spaces, among which organic pores and fractures are important seepage channels for shale gas. 3) The shale pore structure revealed by electron microscopy shows that the pore structure in target layers can be divided into four types: unimodal type (mainly organic pores), bimodal type (both organic and inorganic pores), monoclinic type I (mainly organic pores), and monoclinic type II (mainly inorganic pores). The pore morphology is complex, and circular and oval shapes predominate. 4) Sedimentary facies are the main factor controlling the enrichment of shale gas, and the development of fractures is the key to obtaining high yields of shale gas. 5) The class I favorable target area is mainly distributed in wells W206, W206H1, R234H, and R233H and areas to its south, and some areas in the east of the study area.

Introduction The PER2 (Period circadian regulator 2) gene is related to the circadian clock, and it has been deemed as a suppressor gene in osteosarcoma and lung carcinoma. However, the part of PER2 in CRC (colorectal cancer) needs to be further determined. Methods First, we collected clinical samples to detect PER2 expression in CRC. Then, we used cell transfection to knock down PER2 expression in CRC cell lines and performed a series of functional experiments to elucidate the effects of PER2 on CRC cells. We next verified whether PER2 affects the epithelial-mesenchymal transformation (EMT) process in CRC by conducting quantitative real-time PCR and western blotting. Results In the research, we revealed that the expression of PER2 decreased in CRC clinical samples. In addition, knocking down PER2 expression caused CRC cells to acquire malignant biological features. Finally, we found that PER2 knockdown may activate the Snail/Slug axis through inhibiting p53, therefore promote the activation of the EMT pathway. Conclusion In conclusion, low PER2 expression reinforces migration and activates EMT in CRC, suggesting that PER2 is closely related to CRC development and could be used as a potential treatment site in the clinic.

Tidal energy is a renewable and promising energy source. Turbines are deployed under water in marine channels where there is a fast tidal current. The first arrays have only recently been deployed and there is no consensus yet on the optimal array design. In this paper, we explore whether the maximum harvestable power can be increased by using harvesters or flow deflectors that exert a side force in the streamnormal direction to oppose the expansion of the streamtube. The power harvesting and the side force exertion are modelled with sink terms in the two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. We found that the power limit increases linearly with the side force, and it should be exerted from the upstream side edges of the array. We conclude that future arrays might not be made only of turbines that harvest power, but also of deflectors such as vertical wings of size comparable to a turbine. The promising results of this theoretical study may direct new research on the use of deflectors to maximise the power harvested by tidal arrays.

Distinguished features of cities influence the characteristics of CH4 emissions. A city-level emission inventory represents the characteristics of CH4 on a smaller scale, according to the special factors in each city. A city-level emission inventory was established to reveal the characteristics and source profile of CH4 emissions in the coldest province, which is a typical provincial cold region in northeast China. The dominant sources were identified for targeted cities. Rice cultivation, coal mining, oil and gas exploitation, and livestock are the dominant emission sectors. Emissions from other sectors, including wastewater disposal, biomass burning, landfill, etc. were also estimated. The provincial CH4 emissions increased gradually from 2003 to 2012, up to 2993.26 Gg with an annual increase rate of 2.85%; the emissions were 2740.63 in 2020. The emissions of CH4 in Harbin, Daqing, Jiamusi, and Hegang cities were higher than in the other nine cities, which were 337.23 Gg, 330.01 Gg, 328.55 Gg, and 307.42 Gg in 2020, respectively. Agriculture, including the rice cultivation, livestock, and biomass burning sectors contributed to 51.24–62.12% of total emissions, and the contributions increased gradually. Coal mining, oil and gas exploration, and fossil fuel combustion are energy-related sources, which contributed up to 37.91% of the total emissions, and the proportion kept decreasing to 23.87% in 2020. Furthermore, meteorological factors are especially relevant to the region, by which the differences of ambient temperature are over 60 °C (±30 °C). In the summer, CH4 emissions from the rice cultivation, biomass burning, livestock, and landfill sectors are obviously distinct from the heating period (winter), while few differences in CH4 emissions are found from wastewater disposal and the fossil fuel production sectors.

Background: Breast cancer bone metastasis and osteoporosis are both severe diseases that seriously threaten human health. These diseases are closely associated with osteolytic lesions. And osteoclasts are the key targets of this pathological process. Given the lack of effective preventive or treatment options against these diseases, the exploitation of new pharmacological agents is critically required.Method: We assessed the efficacy of punicalin on receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-mediated osteoclast formation, F-actin ring formation, gene expression, bone resorption, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) as well as on mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways and molecular docking in vitro. The impact of punicalin on breast cancer-induced osteoclastogenesis, breast cancer cell proliferation, and apoptosis were examined. Transwell assays were also performed. Moreover, we evaluated in vivo effects of punicalin in postmenopausal osteoporosis models and breast cancer bone metastasis model by micro-CT scanning and histomorphometry.Results: Punicalin inhibited osteoclast formation, F-actin ring formation, bone resorption, as well as osteoclast-related gene expression by suppressing the NF-κB signaling pathway. In vitro, punicalin also suppressed the breast cancer-induced osteoclastogenesis, and proliferation, migration as well as invasion of MDA-MB-231 cells and dose-dependently promoted their apoptosis. In vivo, punicalin significantly suppressed breast cancer-induced osteolysis, breast cancer-associated bone metastasis, and ovariectomized (OVX)-mediated osteoporosis by repressing osteoclast and breast cancer cell.Conclusion: Punicalin is expected to offer a novel treatment for the prevention of osteolysis diseases, including osteoporosis and breast cancer-associated osteolysis.

The reduction mechanisms of Yb(III) on W electrodes in molten LiCl-KCl-YbCl3 were explored at 773 K, and the diffusion coefficient of Yb(III) was determined. Then, various electrochemical techniques were employed to investigate the electroreduction of Yb(III) in molten LiCl-KCl on a liquid Pb film and Pb electrode. Electrochemical signals were associated with forming Pb3Yb, PbYb, Pb3Yb5, and PbYb2. The deposition potentials and equilibrium potentials of four Pb-Yb intermetallics were obtained through open-circuit chronopotentiometry. Metallic Yb was extracted by potentiostatic electrolysis (PE) on a liquid Pb electrode, and XRD analyzed the Pb-Yb alloy obtained at different extraction times. The recovered Yb was found in the form of Pb3Yb and PbYb intermetallics. The extraction efficiency of Yb was calculated according to ICP analysis results, and extraction effectivity could attain 94.5% via PE at −1.86 V for 14 h.

Many multi-story residential buildings have been built in villages to improve the living quality of rural residents in China. Therefore, village morphology has dramatically changed compared to the past. Since northern China continues to suffer from environmental problems, improving village ventilation by optimizing village morphology is essential for creating a good rural environment. In this study, 17 morphology models were categorized based on 383 actual villages in Tianjin. In addition, the ventilation capacity of courtyards and streets and residents’ health risks of different morphology cases were analyzed. For the northwest wind direction, the ventilation capacity of the courtyards in the northern part of the village can be improved when there are multi-story residences in the north or west of the village. Accordingly, in the southeast wind direction, multi-story buildings in the south or east of the village can improve the courtyard ventilation in the southern part of the village. In addition, multi-story buildings in the west or east of the village can form ventilation corridors in the northwest or southeast wind direction. The morphologies without multi-story buildings in the west or east of the village were recommended to be applied in the village planning in Tianjin due to good ventilation capacity and low exposure risks.

The deterioration of the urban environment is a problem which has captured the attention of governmental departments and researchers, who are committed to improving the urban environment from the perspective of optimizing urban morphology. Although many researchers have applied computational fluid dynamics (CFD) plug-ins to study the problems of urban ventilation and pollutant accumulation, studies on the reliability and simulation accuracy verification of CFD plug-ins are currently scarce. Therefore, we used three CFD plug-ins based on different architectural design platforms to evaluate and compare their operation difficulty, simulation accuracy, and efficiency through the analysis of the simulation results of urban ventilation. This study complements the reliability validation of CFD plug-in simulations and guides urban planners and architects in the selection and application of CFD plug-ins. The results show that the CFD plug-in generally underestimates the wind speed at the pedestrian level and the prediction accuracy is poor in the wake area of obstacles, especially with the GH_Wind plug-in. Under the 0° inflow direction, the simulation results of the Butterfly plug-in were the most consistent with the experimental values. When the inflow direction increased to 22.5° and 45°, the Autodesk CFD showed the best simulation accuracy. Overall, Autodesk CFD achieves a balance between simulation accuracy and speed in urban airflow simulation.

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) infects poultry and antagonizes host immunity via several mechanisms. Dendritic cells (DCs) are characterized as specialized antigen presenting cells, bridging innate and adaptive immunity and regulating host resistance to viral invasion. However, there is little specific knowledge of the role of DCs in NDV infection. In this study, the representative NDV lentogenic strain LaSota was used to explore whether murine bone marrow derived DCs mature following infection. We examined surface molecule expression and cytokine release from DCs as well as proliferation and activation of T cells in vivo and in vitro in the context of NDV. The results demonstrated that infection with lentogenic strain LaSota induced a phenotypic maturation of immature DCs (imDCs), which actually led to curtailed T cell responses. Upon infection, the phenotypic maturation of DCs was reflected by markedly enhanced MHC and costimulatory molecule expression and secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. Nevertheless, NDV-infected DCs produced the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and attenuated T cell proliferation, inducing Th2-biased responses. Therefore, our study reveals a novel understanding that DCs are phenotypically mature but dysfunctional in priming T cell responses during NDV infection.

Vehicle tires are major components that are subjected to fatigue loading and their durability is of economic interest as it is directly related to the safety of property and the life of producers and consumers. Tire durability is also a major issue of energy conservation and environmental protection. This research aims to establish a reasonable fatigue evaluation and optimization method that effectively improves tire fatigue life. In the study, 11.00R20 and 12.00R20 all-steel radial truck tires were the research objects, and the guiding hypothesis for the research was that “the maximum area of ​​the strain energy density gradient modulus corresponds to the initial failure area, its direction corresponds to the crack propagation direction, and also the maximum strain energy value is inversely proportional to the tire fatigue life.” Through finite element analysis and durability test, the strain energy density gradient was determined as tire fatigue evaluation index, and the hypothesis of tire fatigue life prediction was validated. At the same time, the sensitivities of strain energy gradient to the tire structure parameters were calculated. Besides, the relationship between the structure parameters and the fatigue life was as well established in this paper. This study has formulated a tire fatigue evaluation method and proposed an effective optimization method for enhancing tire fatigue life. The results obtained are of high application value in offering guidance for tire structural design and useful for refining the fatigue failure theory of truck radial tires and improving durability.

Ligamentum arteriosum calcification is the calcification or ossification of arterial ligaments. However, on computed tomography images, ligamentum arteriosum calcification is often mistaken for esophageal perforation when a patient has a medical history of foreign body ingestion. Ligamentum arteriosum calcification is uncommon in clinical practice. In this case report, we confirm the presence of this condition intraoperatively, which has seldom been reported previously. Increased awareness of the clinical characteristics of this uncommon disease can help thoracic surgeons with proper patient management.

Abstract An ideal porous adsorbent toward uranium with not only large adsorption capacity and high selectivity but also broad applicability even under rigorous conditions is highly desirable but still extremely scarce. In this work, a porous adsorbent, namely [NH4]+[COF‐SO3−], prepared by ammoniating a SO3H‐decorated covalent organic framework (COF) enables remarkable performance for uranium extraction. Relative to the pristine SO3H‐decorated COF (COF‐SO3H) with uranium adsorption capacity of 360 mg g−1, the ammoniated counterpart of [NH4]+[COF‐SO3−] affords ultrahigh uranium uptake up to 851 mg g−1, creating a 2.4‐fold enhancement. Such a value is the highest among all reported porous adsorbents for uranium. Most importantly, a large distribution coefficient, KdU, up to 9.8 × 106 mL g−1 is observed, implying extremely strong affinity toward uranium. Consequently, [NH4]+[COF‐SO3−] affords highly selective adsorption of uranium over a broad range of metal ions such as SU/Cs = 821, SU/Na = 277, and SU/Sr = 124, making it as effective uranium adsorbent from seawater, resulting in amazing uranium adsorption capacity of 17.8 mg g−1. Moreover, its excellent chemostability also make it an effective uranium adsorbent even under rigorous conditions (pH = 1, 8, and 3 m acidity).

Sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains the leading complication for mortality caused by bacterial infection. The regulatory T (Treg) cells appear to be an important modulator in resolving lung injury. Despite the extensive studies, little is known about the role of macrophage HMGB1/PTEN/β-catenin signaling in Treg development during ALI.Objectives: This study was designed to determine the roles and molecular mechanisms of HMGB1/PTEN/β-catenin signaling in mediating CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Treg development in sepsis-induced lung injury in mice.Setting: University laboratory research of First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University.Subjects: PTEN/β-catenin Loxp and myeloid-specific knockout mice.Interventions: Groups of PTENloxp/β-cateninloxp and myeloid-specific PTEN/β-catenin knockout (PTENM−KO/β-cateninM−KO) mice were treated with LPS or recombinant HMGB1 (rHMGB1) to induce ALI. The effects of HMGB1-PTEN axis were further analyzed by in vitro co-cultures.Measures and Main Results: In a mouse model of ALI, blocking HMGB1 or myeloid-specific PTEN knockout (PTENM−KO) increased animal survival/body weight, reduced lung damage, increased TGF-β production, inhibited the expression of RORγt and IL-17, while promoting β-catenin signaling and increasing CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Tregs in LPS- or rHMGB-induced lung injury. Notably, myeloid-specific β-catenin ablation (β-cateninM−KO) resulted in reduced animal survival and increased lung injury, accompanied by reduced CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Tregs in rHMGB-induced ALI. Furthermore, disruption of macrophage HMGB1/PTEN or activation of β-catenin significantly increased CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Tregs in vitro.Conclusions: HMGB1/PTEN/β-catenin signaling is a novel pathway that regulates Treg development and provides a potential therapeutic target in sepsis-induced lung injury.

Network coding–based routing has been widely considered as a promising technology to improve the network throughput of wireless multihop network. However, existing network coding aware routings have the problem of failure decoding and usually neglect the transmission scheduling, which degrades the gain of network coding. In this article, a common network coding condition and traffic matching supported network coding aware routing is proposed for wireless multihop network. In this, common network coding condition is proposed to avoid the problem of failed decoding. In addition, traffic matching mechanism is presented to promote the occurrence of network coding. Besides, a coding and load aware routing metric, which jointly considers the network coding opportunity and node load, is designed to evaluate the discovered paths. Extensive simulations on NS2 demonstrate that CTNR increases the number of coding opportunities and network coding occurrence, and improves network throughput.

Remaining life prediction is an effective way to optimize maintenance strategy and improve service life for light-emitting diode driving power in rail vehicle carriage. In this article, a Wiener process–based remaining life prediction method is proposed with the analysis of performance degradation data of light-emitting diode driving power in rail vehicle carriage. First, the temperature and humidity stress accelerated degradation tests are put forward in order to measure the output current of light-emitting diode driving power. Based on the output current, the accelerated degradation model is established. The drift and diffusion coefficients of the Wiener process are then obtained without prior information. Finally, the reliability of light-emitting diode driving power in rail vehicle carriage is assessed and the remaining lifetime is predicted after updating the degradation model parameters with Bayesian inference. The results show that the proposed method can improve the precision of assessment and reduce the uncertainty of prediction significantly. It also provides a potential solution for life prediction of other similar products.

Semantic segmentation is one of the most widely studied problems in computer vision communities, which makes a great contribution to a variety of applications. A lot of learning-based approaches, such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), have made a vast contribution to this problem. While rich context information of the input images can be learned from multi-scale receptive fields by convolutions with deep layers, traditional CNNs have great difficulty in learning the geometrical relationship and distribution of objects in the RGB image due to the lack of depth information, which may lead to an inferior segmentation quality. To solve this problem, we propose a method that improves segmentation quality with depth estimation on RGB images. Specifically, we estimate depth information on RGB images via a depth estimation network, and then feed the depth map into the CNN which is able to guide the semantic segmentation. Furthermore, in order to parse the depth map and RGB images simultaneously, we construct a multi-branch encoder–decoder network and fuse the RGB and depth features step by step. Extensive experimental evaluation on four baseline networks demonstrates that our proposed method can enhance the segmentation quality considerably and obtain better performance compared to other segmentation networks.

This paper is devoted to the assessment of urban greening effects on two important ecosystem services, i.e., air quality and CO2 storage, including the corresponding economic impacts in a real urban area, i.e., a district located in the Mediterranean city of Lecce (southern Italy). Two tools were employed, i-Tree Canopy and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) microclimate model ENVI-met. i-Tree Canopy allowed fully determining the land-cover percentage on the basis of different ground cover classes and obtaining an estimate of annual values of CO2 storage, air pollutant removal, and economic benefits in the presence of urban greening. The estimate in i-Tree Canopy considered only the amount of greening; therefore, air pollutant removal estimates were only potential. As the vegetation was located in street canyons, its interaction with local meteorology and urban geometry strictly affected the dispersion of nitrogen oxides (NOx) (taken here as an example) as obtained from ENVI-met simulations. In ENVI-met, both deposition/absorption and aerodynamic effects were considered, and local increases in concentration were found in the district. The analysis of results obtained from different tools (one complex (CFD model) and the other simple (i-Tree model)) showed the error associated with the simple model in the computation of impacts if the interaction among the vegetation characteristics, the meteorological conditions, and the urban geometry was neglected; however, it also uncovers a novel approach for comprehensively characterizing a given area in terms of its vegetation cover, CO2 storage, and economic benefits, as well as local effects on air quality. This study is set in a broader context aimed at assessing the air quality in urban canopies of Mediterranean areas characterized by the presence of narrow street canyons where pollutants can accumulate due to ineffective air exchange with the above atmosphere.

This paper presents a conceptual framework that looks at photovoltaic systems in synergy with ecosystem services. The focus is to connect business success with social and ecological progress based on the operative concept of multifunctional land use. Such an approach attempts to harmonise the needs of the industrial processes of photovoltaic systems and the ecological and social needs of the landscape context. Different from the usual design of ground photovoltaic systems in farmlands or brownfields, a new framework is proposed, combining photovoltaic panels and vegetation. A case study is considered, applying the framework to existing photovoltaic systems in the Apulia region (southern Italy). The analysis shows how the framework has, among others, the major functions of increasing solar energy production, recycling wastewater, creating raw material for biofuel, as well as providing animal habitat and mitigating air temperature. The latter is preliminarily evaluated by means of modelling simulations performed with a computational fluid dynamics and microclimate model, ENVI-met. This approach opens up a new vision of the infrastructure design of photovoltaic systems which can produce new social and economic income.
