In this work, we consider the target detection problem in a multistatic integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) scenario characterized by the cell-free MIMO communication network deployment, where multiple radio units (RUs) in the network cooperate with each other for the sensing task. By exploiting the angle resolution from multiple arrays deployed in the network and the delay resolution from the communication signals, i.e., orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals, we formulate a cooperative sensing problem with coherent data fusion of multiple RUs' observations and propose a sparse Bayesian learning (SBL)-based method, where the global coordinates of target locations are directly detected. Intensive numerical results indicate promising target detection performance of the proposed SBL-based method. In this correspondence, we analyze the performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication system that involves a fluid antenna system (FAS)-enabled receiver. By applying the central limit theorem (CLT), we derive approximate expressions for the system outage probability when the RIS has a large number of elements. Also, we adopt the block-correlation channel model to simplify the outage probability expressions, reducing the computational complexity and shedding light on the impact of the number of ports. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our analysis, especially in scenarios with a large number of RIS elements.

In this paper, we investigate reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication systems which involve a fixed-antenna base station (BS) and a mobile user (MU) that is equipped with fluid antenna system (FAS). Specifically, the RIS is utilized to enable communication for the user whose direct link from the base station is blocked by obstacles. We propose a comprehensive framework that provides transmission design for both static scenarios with the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) and harsh environments where CSI is hard to acquire. It leads to two approaches: a CSI-based scheme where CSI is available, and a CSI-free scheme when CSI is inaccessible. Given the complex spatial correlations in FAS, we employ block-diagonal matrix approximation and independent antenna equivalent models to simplify the derivation of outage probabilities in both cases. Based on the derived outage probabilities, we then optimize the throughput of the FAS-RIS system. For the CSI-based scheme, we first propose a gradient ascent-based algorithm to obtain a near-optimal solution. Then, to address the possible high computational complexity in the gradient algorithm, we approximate the objective function and confirm a unique optimal solution accessible through a bisection search method. For the CSI-free scheme, we apply the partial gradient ascent algorithm, reducing complexity further than full gradient algorithms. We also approximate the objective function and derive a locally optimal closed-form solution to maximize throughput. This paper proposes a two-timescale transmission scheme for extremely large-scale (XL)-reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-aided massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems considering visibility regions (VRs). The beamforming of base stations (BS) is designed based on rapidly changing instantaneous channel state information (CSI), while the phase shifts of RIS are configured based on slowly changing statistical CSI. Specifically, we first formulate a system model with spatially correlated Rician fading channels and introduce the concept of VRs. Then, we derive a closed-form approximate expression for the achievable rate applicable to any number of BS antennas and RIS elements, and analyze the impact of VRs on system performance and complexity. Next, we solve the problem of maximizing the minimum user rate by optimizing the phase shifts of RIS through an algorithm based on accelerated gradient ascent. Finally, we present numerical results to demonstrate the performance of the gradient algorithm from different aspects and reveal the low system complexity of deploying XL-RIS in massive MIMO systems with the help of VRs.

This paper introduces a novel mobile tracking framework leveraging the high-dimensional signal received from extremely large-scale (XL) reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). This received signal, named XL-RIS information, has a much larger data dimension and therefore offers a richer feature set compared to the traditional base station (BS) received signal, i.e., BS information, enabling more accurate tracking of mobile users (MUs). As the first step, we present an XL-RIS information reconstruction (XL-RIS-IR) algorithm to reconstruct the high-dimensional XL-RIS information from the low-dimensional BS information. Building on this, this paper proposes a comprehensive framework for mobile tracking, consisting of a Feature Extraction Module and a Mobile Tracking Module. The Feature Extraction Module incorporates a convolutional neural network (CNN) extractor for spatial features, a time and frequency (T$\&$F) extractor for domain features, and a near-field angles of arrival (AoAs) extractor for capturing AoA features within the XL-RIS. These features are combined into a comprehensive feature vector, forming a time-varying sequence fed into the Mobile Tracking Module, which employs an Auto-encoder (AE) with a stacked bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) encoder and a standard LSTM decoder to predict MUs' positions in the upcoming time slot. Simulation results confirm that the tracking accuracy of our proposed framework is significantly enhanced by using reconstructed XL-RIS information and exhibits substantial robustness to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) variations.

This paper proposes a novel localization algorithm using the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) received signal, i.e., RIS information. Compared with BS received signal, i.e., BS information, RIS information offers higher dimension and richer feature set, thereby providing an enhanced capacity to distinguish positions of the mobile users (MUs). Additionally, we address a practical scenario where RIS contains some unknown (number and places) faulty elements that cannot receive signals. Initially, we employ transfer learning to design a two-phase transfer learning (TPTL) algorithm, designed for accurate detection of faulty elements. Then our objective is to regain the information lost from the faulty elements and reconstruct the complete high-dimensional RIS information for localization. To this end, we propose a transfer-enhanced dual-stage (TEDS) algorithm. In \emph{Stage I}, we integrate the CNN and variational autoencoder (VAE) to obtain the RIS information, which in \emph{Stage II}, is input to the transferred DenseNet 121 to estimate the location of the MU. To gain more insight, we propose an alternative algorithm named transfer-enhanced direct fingerprint (TEDF) algorithm which only requires the BS information. The comparison between TEDS and TEDF reveals the effectiveness of faulty element detection and the benefits of utilizing the high-dimensional RIS information for localization. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided localization systems have attracted extensive research attention due to their accuracy enhancement capabilities. However, most studies primarily utilized the base stations (BS) received signal, i.e., BS information, for localization algorithm design, neglecting the potential of RIS received signal, i.e., RIS information. Compared with BS information, RIS information offers higher dimension and richer feature set, thereby significantly improving the ability to extract positions of the mobile users (MUs). Addressing this oversight, this paper explores the algorithm design based on the high-dimensional RIS information. Specifically, we first propose a RIS information reconstruction (RIS-IR) algorithm to reconstruct the high-dimensional RIS information from the low-dimensional BS information. The proposed RIS-IR algorithm comprises a data processing module for preprocessing BS information, a convolution neural network (CNN) module for feature extraction, and an output module for outputting the reconstructed RIS information. Then, we propose a transfer learning based fingerprint (TFBF) algorithm that employs the reconstructed high-dimensional RIS information for MU localization. This involves adapting a pre-trained DenseNet-121 model to map the reconstructed RIS signal to the MU's three-dimensional (3D) position. Empirical results affirm that the localization performance is significantly influenced by the high-dimensional RIS information and maintains robustness against unoptimized phase shifts.

Integrating the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) into a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) system is an effective solution to achieve high system capacity with low cost and power consumption. However, existing works of RIS-assisted systems mostly assumed perfect hardware, while the impact of hardware impairments (HWIs) is generally ignored. In this paper, we consider the general Rician fading channel and uplink transmission of the RIS-assisted CF-mMIMO system under transceiver impairments and RIS phase noise. To reduce the feedback overhead and power consumption, we propose a two-timescale transmission scheme to optimize the passive beamformers at RISs with statistical channel state information (CSI), while transmit beamformers at access points (APs) are designed based on instantaneous CSI. Also, the maximum ratio combining (MRC) detection is applied to the central processing unit (CPU). On this basis, we derive the closed-form approximate expression of the achievable rate, based on which the impact of HWIs and the power scaling laws are analyzed to draw useful theoretical insights. To maximize the users' sum rate or minimum rate, we first transform our rate expression into a tractable form, and then optimize the phase shifts of RISs based on an accelerated gradient ascent method. Finally, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the correctness of our derived expressions and validate the previous analysis, which provide some guidelines for the practical application of the imperfect RISs in the CF-mMIMO with transceiver HWIs., Comment: 51 pages, 11 figures

This paper investigates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Frequency-selective Rician fading channels are considered, and the OFDM data transmission process is presented in time domain. This paper derives the closed-form approximate expression of the uplink achievable rate, based on which the asymptotic system performance is analyzed when the number of the antennas at the base station and the number of reflecting elements at the RIS grow to infinity. Besides, the power scaling laws of the considered system are revealed to provide energy-saving insights. Furthermore, this paper proposes a gradient ascent-based algorithm to design the phase shifts of the RIS for maximizing the minimum user rate. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the correctness of analytical conclusions and draw insights.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology has been considered as one of the key candidate technologies in the next-generation wireless communication systems. However, when radar and communication equipment coexist in the same system, i.e. radar-communication coexistence (RCC), the interference from communication systems to radar can be large and cannot be ignored. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been introduced into RCC systems to reduce the interference. However, the "multiplicative fading" effect introduced by passive RIS limits its performance. To tackle this issue, we consider a double active RIS-assisted RCC system, which focuses on the design of the radar's beamforming vector and the active RISs' reflecting coefficient matrices, to maximize the achievable data rate of the communication system. The considered system needs to meet the radar detection constraint and the power budgets at the radar and the RISs. Since the problem is non-convex, we propose an algorithm based on the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) framework. Specifically, we initially introduce auxiliary variables to reformulate the coupled variables into equation constraints and incorporate these constraints into the objective function through the PDD framework. Then, we decouple the equivalent problem into several subproblems by invoking the block coordinate descent (BCD) method. Furthermore, we employ the Lagrange dual method to alternately optimize these subproblems. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, the results also show that under the same power budget, deploying double active RISs in RCC systems can achieve higher data rate than those with single active RIS and double passive RISs.

Fluid Antenna System (FAS) is recognized as a promising technology for enhancing communication performance. In this context, we explored the potential of FAS-assisted wireless powered communication systems. Specifically, the transmitter, equipped with FAS, harvests the radio frequency (RF) signal from a power beacon and utilizes the harvested energy for data transmission to the receiver. To evaluate the performance of the considered systems, we derive both the analytical and asymptotic expressions of the outage probability. Simulation results indicate that the diversity of the considered network closely aligns with the number of ports. Besides, it is also revealed that the port selection criteria based solely on single-hop configurations yield a diversity order of only one.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is capable of supporting extremely high system capacities with large numbers of users. In this work, we build a framework for the analysis and low-complexity design of XL-MIMO in the near field with spatial non-stationarities. Specifically, we first analyze the theoretical performance of discrete-aperture XL-MIMO using an electromagnetic (EM) channel model based on the near-field spherical wavefront. We analytically reveal the impact of the discrete aperture and polarization mismatch on the received power. We also complement the classical Fraunhofer distance based on the considered EM channel model. Our analytical results indicate that a limited part of the XL-array receives the majority of the signal power in the near field, which leads to a notion of visibility region (VR) of a user. Thus, we propose a VR detection algorithm and leverage the acquired VR information to devise a low-complexity symbol detection scheme. Furthermore, we propose a graph theory-based user partition algorithm, relying on the VR overlap ratio between different users. Partial zero-forcing (PZF) is utilized to eliminate only the interference from users allocated to the same group, which further reduces computational complexity in matrix inversion. Numerical results confirm the correctness of the analytical results and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of a two-timescale transmission design in cell-free massive multi-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems incorporating reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) under the assumption of imperfect channel state information (CSI). We examine the Rician channel model and formulate the passive beamforming for the RISs based on statistical channel state information (S-CSI). To that end, we put forth a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator with the aim of estimating the aggregation of channels from the users to the APs within each channel coherence interval. Meanwhile, the active beamforming for the radio units (APs) is executed using the maximum ratio combining (MRC) approach, which utilizes the instantaneous aggregated channels, that result from the combination of the direct and reflected channels from the RISs. Subsequently, we derive the closed-form expressions of the achievable uplink spectral efficiency (SE), which is a function of S-CSI elements such as distance-dependent path loss, Rician factors as well as the number of RIS elements and AP antennas. We then optimize the phase shifts of the RISs to maximize the sum SE of the users, utilizing the soft actor-critic (SAC) which is a deep reinforcement learning (RL) method, and relying on the derived closed-form expressions. Numerical evaluations affirm that, despite the presence of imperfect CSI, the deployment of RIS in cell-free systems can lead to significant performance improvement.

This paper investigates the performance of a two-timescale transmission design for uplink reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) systems. We consider the Rician channel model and design the passive beamforming of RISs based on the long-time statistical channel state information (CSI), while the central processing unit (CPU) utilizes the maximum ratio combining (MRC) technology to perform fully centralized processing based on the instantaneous overall channel, which are the superposition of the direct and RIS-reflected channels. Firstly, we derive the closed-form approximate expression of the uplink achievable rate for arbitrary numbers of access point (AP) antennas and RIS reflecting elements. Relying on the derived expressions, we theoretically analyze the benefits of deploying RIS into cell-free mMIMO systems and draw explicit insights. Then, based on the closed-form approximate rate expression under statistical CSI, we optimize the phase shifts of RISs based on the genetic algorithm (GA) to maximize the sum rate and minimum rate of users, respectively. Finally, the numerical results demonstrate the correctness of our derived expressions and the benefits of deploying large-size RISs into cell-free mMIMO systems. Also, we investigate the optimality and convergence behaviors of the GA to verify its effectiveness. To give more beneficial analysis, we give the closed-form expression of the energy efficiency and present numerical results to show the high energy efficiency of the system with the help of RISs. Besides, our results have revealed the benefits of distributed deployment of APs and RISs in the RIS-aided mMIMO system with cell-free networks.

In this paper, a novel secure and private over-the-air federated learning (SP-OTA-FL) framework is studied where noise is employed to protect data privacy and system security. Specifically, the privacy leakage of user data and the security level of the system are measured by differential privacy (DP) and mean square error security (MSE-security), respectively. To mitigate the impact of noise on learning accuracy, we propose a channel-weighted post-processing (CWPP) mechanism, which assigns a smaller weight to the gradient of the device with poor channel conditions. Furthermore, employing CWPP can avoid the issue that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the overall system is limited by the device with the worst channel condition in aligned over-the-air federated learning (OTA-FL). We theoretically analyze the effect of noise on privacy and security protection and also illustrate the adverse impact of noise on learning performance by conducting convergence analysis. Based on these analytical results, we propose device scheduling policies considering privacy and security protection in different cases of channel noise. In particular, we formulate an integer nonlinear fractional programming problem aiming to minimize the negative impact of noise on the learning process. We obtain the closed-form solution to the optimization problem when the model is with high dimension. For the general case, we propose a secure and private algorithm (SPA) based on the branch-and-bound (BnB) method, which can obtain an optimal solution with low complexity. The effectiveness of the proposed CWPP mechanism and the policies for device selection are validated through simulations.

This letter theoretically compares the active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided system with the passive RIS-aided system. For fair comparison, we consider that these two systems have the same overall power budget that can be used at both the base station (BS) and the RIS. For active RIS, we first derive the optimal power allocation between the BS's transmit signal power and RIS's output signal power. We also analyze the impact of various system parameters on the optimal power allocation ratio. In the past as well as present wireless communication systems, the wireless propagation environment is regarded as an uncontrollable black box that impairs the received signal quality, and its negative impacts are compensated for by relying on the design of various sophisticated transmission/reception schemes. However, the improvements through applying such schemes operating at two endpoints (i.e., transmitter and receiver) only are limited even after five generations of wireless systems. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) or intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) have emerged as a new and revolutionary technology that can configure the wireless environment in a favorable manner by properly tuning the phase shifts of a large number of quasi passive and low-cost reflecting elements, thus standing out as a promising candidate technology for the next-/sixth-generation (6G) wireless system. However, to reap the performance benefits promised by RIS/IRS, efficient signal processing techniques are crucial, for a variety of purposes such as channel estimation, transmission design, radio localization, and so on. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances on RIS/IRS-aided wireless systems from the signal processing perspective. This paper provides a theoretical framework for understanding the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with zero-forcing (ZF) detectors under imperfect channel state information (CSI). We first propose a low-overhead minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimator, and then derive and analyze closed-form expressions for the uplink achievable rate. Our analytical results demonstrate that: $1)$ regardless of the RIS phase shift design, the rate of all users scales at least on the order of $\mathcal{O}\left(\log_2\left(MN\right)\right)$, where $M$ and $N$ are the numbers of antennas and reflecting elements, respectively; $2)$ by aligning the RIS phase shifts to one user, the rate of this user can at most scale on the order of $\mathcal{O}\left(\log_2\left(MN^2\right)\right)$; $3)$ either $M$ or the transmit power can be reduced inversely proportional to $N$, while maintaining a given rate. Furthermore, we propose two low-complexity majorization-minimization (MM)-based algorithms to optimize the sum user rate and the minimum user rate, respectively, where closed-form solutions are obtained in each iteration. Finally, simulation results validate all derived analytical results. This paper investigates the two-timescale transmission design for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the beamforming at the base station (BS) is adapted to the rapidly-changing instantaneous channel state information (CSI), while the passive beamforming at the RIS is adapted to the slowly-changing statistical CSI. Specifically, we first propose a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator to obtain the aggregated channel from the users to the BS in each channel coherence interval. Based on the estimated channel, we apply the low-complexity maximal ratio combining (MRC) beamforming at the BS, and then derive the ergodic achievable rate in a closed form expression. To draw design insights, we perform a detailed theoretical analysis departing from the derived ergodic achievable rate. If the BS-RIS channel is Rician distributed, we prove that the transmit power can be scaled proportionally to $1/M$, as the number of BS antennas, $M$, grows to infinity while maintaining a non-zero rate. If the BS-RIS channel is Rayleigh distributed, the transmit power can be scaled either proportionally to $1/\sqrt{M}$ as $M$ grows large, or proportionally to $1/N$ as the number of reflecting elements, $N$, grows large, while still maintaining a non-zero rate. By capitalizing on the derived expression of the data rate under the statistical knowledge of the CSI, we maximize the minimum user rate by designing the passive beamforming at the RIS. Numerical results confirm that, even in the presence of imperfect CSI, the integration of an RIS in massive MIMO systems results in promising performance gains. This letter investigates the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a two-timescale design. First, the zero-forcing (ZF) detector is applied at the base station (BS) based on instantaneous aggregated CSI, which is the superposition of the direct channel and the cascaded user-RIS-BS channel. Then, by leveraging the channel statistical property, we derive the closed-form ergodic achievable rate expression. Using a gradient ascent method, we design the RIS passive beamforming only relying on the long-term statistical CSI. We prove that the ergodic rate can reap the gains on the order of $\mathcal{O}\left(\log_{2}\left(MN\right)\right)$, where $M$ and $N$ denote the number of BS antennas and RIS elements, respectively. This paper investigates the reconfigurable reflecting surface (RIS)-aided multiple-input-single-output (MISO) systems with imperfect channel state information (CSI), where RIS-related channels are modeled by Rician fading. Considering the overhead and complexity in practical systems, we employ the low-complexity maximum ratio combining (MRC) beamforming at the base station (BS), and configure the phase shifts of the RIS based on long-term statistical CSI. Specifically, we first estimate the overall channel matrix based on the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator, and evaluate the performance of MSE and normalized MSE (NMSE). Then, with the estimated channel, we derive the closed-form expressions of the ergodic rate. The derived expressions show that with Rician RIS-related channels, the rate can maintain at a non-zero value when the transmit power is scaled down proportionally to $1/M$ or $1/N^2$, where $M$ and $N$ are the number of antennas and reflecting elements, respectively. However, if all the RIS-related channels are fully Rayleigh, the transmit power of each user can only be scaled down proportionally to $1/\sqrt{M}$ or $1/N$. We investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user massive multiple-input multi-output (MIMO) system where low-resolution digital-analog converters (DACs) are configured at the base station (BS) in order to reduce the cost and power consumption. An approximate analytical expression for the downlink achievable rate is derived based on maximum ratio transmission (MRT) and additive quantization noise model (AQNM), and the rate maximization problem is solved by particle swarm optimization (PSO) method under both continuous phase shifts (CPSs) and discrete phase shifts (DPSs) at the RIS. This paper considers an uplink reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with statistical channel state information (CSI). The RIS is deployed to help conventional massive MIMO networks serve the users in the dead zone. We consider the Rician channel model and exploit the long-time statistical CSI to design the phase shifts of the RIS, while the maximum ratio combination (MRC) technique is applied for the active beamforming at the base station (BS) relying on the instantaneous CSI. Firstly, we reveal the power scaling laws and derive the closed-form expressions for the uplink achievable rate which holds for arbitrary numbers of base station (BS) antennas. Based on the theoretical expressions, we discuss the rate performance under some special cases and provide the average asymptotic rate when using random phase shifts. Then, we consider the sum-rate maximization and the minimum user rate maximization problems by optimizing the phase shifts at the RIS. However, these two optimization problems are challenging to solve due to the complicated data rate expression. To solve these problems, we propose a novel genetic algorithm (GA) with low complexity but can achieve considerable performance. Finally, extensive simulations are provided to validate the benefits by integrating RIS into conventional massive MIMO systems. In this paper, we derive the uplink achievable rate expression of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems, taking into account the phase noise at IRS and the quantization error at base stations (BSs). We show that the performance is limited only by the resolution of analog-digital converters (ADCs) at BSs when the number of IRS reflectors grows without bound. On the other hand, if BSs have ideal ADCs, the performance loss caused by IRS phase noise is a constant. From the perspective of statistical performance, this paper presents a framework for the per-user throughput analysis in random cache based multi-antenna heterogeneous networks (HetNets) with user-centric inter-cell interference nulling (IN). Using tools from stochastic geometry, an explicit expression for the per-user throughput is derived. Based on the analytical results, the optimal cache probabilities for maximizing the per-user throughput are analyzed. Theoretical analysis and numerical results reveal that the optimal random cache under interference nulling fully harvests the file diversity gain (FDG) and achieves a promising per-user throughput., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures
