Abstract Background Commensal bacteria in the intestine release enzymes to degrade and ferment dietary components, producing beneficial metabolites. However, the regulatory effects of microbial-derived enzymes on the intestinal microbiota composition and the influence on host health remain elusive. Xylanase can degrade xylan into oligosaccharides, showing wide application in feed industry. Results To validate the immune-protective effects of xylanase, Nile tilapia was used as the model and fed with xylanase. The results showed that dietary xylanase improved the survival rate of Nile tilapia when they were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. The transcriptome analysis showed significant enrichment of genes related to interleukin-17d (il-17d) signaling pathway in the xylanase treatment group. High-throughput sequencing revealed that dietary xylanase altered the composition of the intestinal microbiota and directly promoted the proliferation of Allobaculum stercoricanis which could produce butyrate in vitro. Consequently, dietary xylanase supplementation increased the butyrate level in fish gut. Further experiment verified that butyrate supplementation enhanced the expression of il-17d and regenerating islet-derived 3 gamma (reg3g) in the gut. The knockdown experiment of il-17d confirmed that il-17d is necessary for butyrate to protect Nile tilapia from pathogen resistance. Flow cytometry analysis indicated that butyrate increased the abundance of IL-17D+ intestinal epithelial cells in fish. Mechanistically, butyrate functions as an HDAC3 inhibitor, enhancing il-17d expression and playing a crucial role in pathogen resistance. Conclusion Dietary xylanase significantly altered the composition of intestinal microbiota and increased the content of butyrate in the intestine. Butyrate activated the transcription of il-17d in intestinal epithelial cells by inhibiting histone deacetylase 3, thereby protecting the Nile tilapia from pathogen infection. This study elucidated how microbial-derived xylanase regulates host immune function, providing a theoretical basis for the development and application of functional enzymes. Video Abstract

Abstract Background Intestinal barrier is a dynamic interface between the body and the ingested food components, however, dietary components or xenobiotics could compromise intestinal integrity, causing health risks to the host. Gossypol, a toxic component in cottonseed meal (CSM), caused intestinal injury in fish or other monogastric animals. It has been demonstrated that probiotics administration benefits the intestinal barrier integrity, but the efficacy of probiotics in maintaining intestinal health when the host is exposed to gossypol remains unclear. Here, a strain (YC) affiliated to Pediococcus pentosaceus was isolated from the gut of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and its potential to repair gossypol-induced intestinal damage was evaluated. Results A total of 270 Nile tilapia (2.20 ± 0.02 g) were allotted in 3 groups with 3 tanks each and fed with 3 diets including CON (control diet), GOS (control diet containing 300 mg/kg gossypol) and GP (control diet containing 300 mg/kg gossypol and 108 colony-forming unit (CFU)/g P. pentosaceus YC), respectively. After 10 weeks, addition of P. pentosaceus YC restored growth retardation and intestinal injury induced by gossypol in Nile tilapia. Transcriptome analysis and siRNA interference experiments demonstrated that NOD-like receptors (NLR) family caspase recruitment domain (CARD) domain containing 3 (Nlrc3) inhibition might promote intestinal stem cell (ISC) proliferation, as well as maintaining gut barrier integrity. 16S rRNA sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed that addition of P. pentosaceus YC altered the composition of gut microbiota and increased the content of propionate in fish gut. In vitro studies on propionate’s function demonstrated that it suppressed nlrc3 expression and promoted wound healing in Caco-2 cell model. Conclusions The present study reveals that P. pentosaceus YC has the capacity to ameliorate intestinal barrier injury by modulating gut microbiota composition and elevating propionate level. This finding offers a promising strategy for the feed industry to incorporate cottonseed meal into fish feed formulations. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a 2D material with excellent electrical and optical properties, and developing a universal technology for the preparation of high‐performance MoS2‐based photodetector is extremely desirable. Here, a UV to NIR broadband flexible photodetector based on MoS2/(PDPP3T) inorganic–organic hybrid heterostructures is reported. In the experiment, high crystalline 2H‐phase few‐layer MoS2 nanoflakes are first prepared by optimized electrochemical intercalation of tetraheptylammonium cation (THA+) and ultrasound‐assisted exfoliation strategy. Thereafter, a narrow bandgap organic semiconductor PDPP3T is introduced to construct the MoS2/Poly(diketopyrrolopyrrolothiophrn) (PDPP3T) heterojunction. Experimental results reveal that the photodetector can have broadband photo response from 380 to 980 nm. Meanwhile, excellent responsivities and detectivity of 12.4 mA W−1, 2.2 × 1010 Jones at 380 nm and 0.1 mA W−1 and 5 × 108 Jones at 980 nm are achieved, which are ≈10 (UV band)/100 (NIR band) times high than that obtained on the pure MoS2‐based detector. Moreover, the flexibility of the device is investigated by conformal covering the device on a curved surface (R = 5 and 2.5 mm), it shows that the photo response remains almost the same as that measured on the planar substrate, indicating the possible application in the wearable electronics.

Abstract The mechanisms of acclimating to a nitrogen-fluctuating environment are necessary for the survival of aquatic cyanobacteria in their natural habitats, but our understanding is still far from complete. Here, the synthesis of phycobiliprotein is confirmed to be much earlier than that of photosystem components during recovery from nitrogen chlorosis and an unknown protein Ssr1698 is discovered to be involved in this synthetic process. The unknown protein is further identified as a c-type heme oxygenase (cHO) in tetrapyrrole biosynthetic pathway and catalyzes the opening of heme ring to form biliverdin IXα, which is required for phycobilin production and ensuing phycobiliprotein synthesis. In addition, the cHO-dependent phycobiliprotein is found to be vital for the growth of cyanobacterial cells during chlorosis and regreening through its nitrogen-storage and light-harvesting functions, respectively. Collectively, the cHO expressed preferentially during recovery from nitrogen chlorosis is identified in photosynthetic organisms and the dual function of this enzyme-dependent phycobiliprotein is proposed to be an important mechanism for acclimation of aquatic cyanobacteria to a nitrogen-fluctuating environment.

Abstract Background As substitutes for antibiotics, probiotic bacteria protect against digestive infections caused by pathogenic bacteria. Ligilactobacillus salivarius is a species of native lactobacillus found in both humans and animals. Herein, a swine-derived Ligilactobacillus salivarius was isolated and shown to colonize the ileal mucous membrane, thereby promoting nutritional digestion, absorption, and immunity. To evaluate its probiotic role, the entire genome was sequenced, the genetic information was annotated, and the metabolic information was analyzed. Results The phylogenetic relationship indicated that the bacteria was closer to L. salivarius MT573555.1 and MT585431.1. Functional genes included transporters, membrane proteins, enzymes, heavy metal resistance proteins, and putative proteins; metabolism-related genes were the most abundant. The six types of metabolic pathways secreted by L. salivarius were mainly composed of secretory transmembrane proteins and peptides. The secretory proteins of L. salivarius were digestive enzymes, functional proteins that regulate apoptosis, antibodies, and hormones. Non-targeted metabolomic analysis of L. salivarius metabolites suggested that ceramide, pyrrolidone- 5- carboxylic acid, N2-acetyl-L-ornithine, 2-ethyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid, N-lactoyl-phenylalanine, and 12 others were involved in antioxidation, repair of the cellular membrane, anticonvulsant, hypnosis, and appetite inhibition. Metabolites of clavaminic acid, antibiotic X14889C, and five other types of bacteriocins were identified, namely phenyllactic acid, janthitrem G, 13-demethyl tacrolimus, medinoside E, and tertonasin. The adherence and antioxidation of L. salivarius were also predicted. No virulence genes were found. Conclusion The main probiotic properties of L. salivarius were identified using genomic, metabonomic, and biochemical assays, which are beneficial for porcine feeding. Our results provided deeper insights into the probiotic effects of L. salivarius.

Abstract Background Soybean (Glycine max) meal is one of the important protein sources for fish, but the non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) in soybean meal impair the intestinal barrier function. Here we aimed to investigate whether xylanase can alleviate the adverse effects on the gut barrier induced by soybean meal in Nile tilapia and to explore the possible mechanism. Results Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (4.09 ± 0.02 g) were fed with two diets including SM (soybean meal) and SMC (soybean meal + 3,000 U/kg xylanase) for 8 weeks. We characterized the effects of xylanase on the gut barrier, and the transcriptome analysis was performed to investigate the underlying mechanism. Dietary xylanase improved intestinal morphology and decreased the concentration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in serum. The results of transcriptome and Western blotting showed that dietary xylanase up-regulated the expression level of mucin2 (MUC2) which may be related to the inhibition of protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (perk)/activating transcription factor 4 (atf4) signaling pathways. Microbiome analysis showed that addition of xylanase in soybean meal altered the intestinal microbiota composition and increased the concentration of butyric acid in the gut. Notably, dietary sodium butyrate was supplemented into the soybean meal diet to feed Nile tilapia, and the data verified that sodium butyrate mirrored the beneficial effects of xylanase. Conclusions Collectively, supplementation of xylanase in soybean meal altered the intestinal microbiota composition and increased the content of butyric acid which can repress the perk/atf4 signaling pathway and increase the expression of muc2 to enhance the gut barrier function of Nile tilapia. The present study reveals the mechanism by which xylanase improves the intestinal barrier, and it also provides a theoretical basis for the application of xylanase in aquaculture.

In this paper, ISO 7730 as thermal comfort standard was utilized to analyze the applicability of counter flow dew point evaporative cooler in the dry and hot region—Datong, Shanxi. The output air temperature, cooling efficiency, and cooling capacity were considered, and the finite method was used to optimize the operating parameters and geometric parameters of the evaporative cooler. The effects of primary air inlet velocity, primary-to-secondary air ratio, channel spacing, and channel height on the cooling performance of the system were investigated. The results showed that with the increase of the primary wind speed, both the temperature and cooling capacity of the produced air increase. On the premise that the supply air parameters meet the requirements, the cooling capacity can be increased by increasing the primary wind speed. When working ratio is 0.4 and the channel spacing is 5 mm, the dew point evaporative cooler with the channel height greater than 0.8 m meets the thermal comfort requirement in the range of primary air inlet velocity from 1 to 7 m/s. At the same time, when the heat exchange area is fixed, the greater the length-to-width ratio of the channel, the better the cooling performance.

Abstract N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) modification has been implicated in the progression of obesity and metabolic diseases. However, its impact on beige fat biology is not well understood. Here, via m6A‐sequencing and RNA‐sequencing, this work reports that upon beige adipocytes activation, glycolytic genes undergo major events of m6A modification and transcriptional activation. Genetic ablation of m6A writer Mettl3 in fat tissues reveals that Mettl3 deficiency in mature beige adipocytes leads to suppressed glycolytic capability and thermogenesis, as well as reduced preadipocytes proliferation via glycolytic product lactate. In addition, specific modulation of Mettl3 in beige fat via AAV delivery demonstrates consistently Mettl3's role in glucose metabolism, thermogenesis, and beige fat hyperplasia. Mechanistically, Mettl3 and m6A reader Igf2bp2 control mRNA stability of key glycolytic genes in beige adipocytes. Overall, these findings highlight the significance of m6A on fat biology and systemic energy homeostasis.

In recent years, ozone (O3) pollution has worsened in China and contributes frequently to air pollution problems. To support the implementation of coordinated control for ozone and fine particulate matter, it is essential to study the chemical compositions and sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are the crucial precursor of both ozone and fine particulate matter. In this study, 117 volatile organic compounds were monitored in 13 cities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban Agglomeration and Fenwei plain. Concentrations of total volatile organic compounds ranged from 42 to 279 μg/m3 during the monitoring episode. In all 13 cities, alkanes, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatics and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) were the dominant volatile organic compounds. Contributions of alkanes, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatics and oxygenated volatile organic compounds to total ozone formation potential (OFP) were 21.7%–32.6%, 21.0%–27.9%, 24.3%–50.8% and 28.6%–52.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the results of source apportionment by positive matrix factorization (PMF) model indicated that solvent usage, gasoline evaporation, vehicle emissions, petrochemical industry and combustion were essential volatile organic compounds sources in 13 cities. Moreover, the sensitivity of ozone production was studied using an Empirical Kinetic Modeling Approach (EKMA) model, and it was found that ozone formation was volatile organic compounds limited in all 13 cities.

Indoor particles and carbon dioxide concentration are major indices to evaluate indoor air quality. Based on the two-dimensional filler sieving model of the direct evaporative cooling segment, the porous media model was used for the simulation of the water filler section, the filtering efficiency of particle was simulated by adjusting the water drenching density and airflow velocity in different operating conditions. The three-dimensional classroom model used to change the exhaust outlet position and control the use of air conditioners simulated the indoor thermal environment and the changes in pollutant concentration. The Euler method and Lagrangian method were used to analyze the indoor flow field and particle sieving in the direct evaporation section, respectively. Conclusions show that in the application of evaporative cooling and stratum ventilation air conditioning system in classroom, the position of the exhaust port affects the concentration of carbon dioxide in the student’s breathing area. The water filler section can effectively reduce the concentration of particle and carbon dioxide supplied indoors. The filtration efficiency of particle in outdoor air passing through the direct evaporative cooling section based on diffusion, inertial collision, and interception is affected by the combined effect of particle size, onward wind speed, and water spray density. The filtration efficiency of particle increases as the density of the spray water increases. With the increase of head-on wind speed, the filtration efficiency of coarse particulate matter is higher than that of fine particulate matter. The research results help policy makers decide whether to install evaporative cooling air conditioning in schools and determine which exhaust outlet positions are most effective in improving indoor air quality.

Temporal knowledge graphs (KGs) have recently attracted increasing attention. The temporal KG forecasting task, which plays a crucial role in such applications as event prediction, predicts future links based on historical facts. However, current studies pay scant attention to the following two aspects. First, the interpretability of current models is manifested in providing reasoning paths, which is an essential property of path-based models. However, the comparison of reasoning paths in these models is operated in a black-box fashion. Moreover, contemporary models utilize separate networks to evaluate paths at different hops. Although the network for each hop has the same architecture, each network achieves different parameters for better performance. Different parameters cause identical semantics to have different scores, so models cannot measure identical semantics at different hops equally. Inspired by the observation that reasoning based on multi-hop paths is akin to answering questions step by step, this paper designs an Interpretable Multi-Hop Reasoning (IMR) framework based on consistent basic models for temporal KG forecasting. IMR transforms reasoning based on path searching into stepwise question answering. In addition, IMR develops three indicators according to the characteristics of temporal KGs and reasoning paths: the question matching degree, answer completion level, and path confidence. IMR can uniformly integrate paths of different hops according to the same criteria; IMR can provide the reasoning paths similarly to other interpretable models and further explain the basis for path comparison. We instantiate the framework based on common embedding models such as TransE, RotatE, and ComplEx. While being more explainable, these instantiated models achieve state-of-the-art performance against previous models on four baseline datasets.

Most regional seismic damage assessment (RSDA) methods are based on the rigid-base assumption to ensure evaluating efficiency, while these practices introduce factual errors due to neglecting the soil–structure interaction (SSI). Predicting the influence of the SSI on seismic responses of regionwide structure portfolios remains a challenging undertaking, as it requires developing numerous high-fidelity, integrated models to capture the dynamic interplay and uncertainties in structures, foundations, and supporting soils. This study develops a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) model to efficiently predict to what degree considering the SSI would change the inter-story drifts and base shear forces of RC frame buildings. An experimentally validated finite element model is developed to simulate the nonlinear seismic behavior of the building-foundation–soil system. Subsequently, a database comprising input data (i.e., structural and soil parameters, ground motions) and output predictors (i.e., changes in story drift and base shear) is constructed by simulating 1380 pairs of fixed-base versus soil-supported structures under earthquake loading. This large-scale dataset is used to train, test, and identify the optimal hyperparameters for the 1D-CNN model to quantify the demand differences in inter-story drifts and base shears due to the SSI. Results indicate the 1D-CNN model has a superior performance, and the absolute prediction errors of the SSI influence coefficients for the maximum base shear and inter-story drift are within 9.3% and 11.7% for 80% of cases in the testing set. The deep learning model can be conveniently applied to enhance the accuracy of the RSDA of RC buildings by updating their seismic responses where no SSI is considered.

Drought is one of the most brutal environmental factors limiting the productivity of fruit trees. The search for new and efficient microorganisms from unexplored environments that can be used to mitigate the negative effects of water stress is an interesting alternative to alleviate the drought stress experienced by plants. This study aimed to determine the effects of PGPR inoculation on the growth and physioecological characteristics of walnut (Juglans regia) seedlings under drought stress. A pot experiment was conducted using J. regia seedlings with controlled water supplies at different levels (light, moderate, and severe drought stress and control) and with or without inoculation with Bacillus cereus L90, a type of PGPR that produces high levels of cytokinins and indoleacetic acid (IAA). Under well-watered conditions, there was no obvious effect of PGPR inoculation on the antioxidant enzyme activities, osmotic adjustment levels, and photosynthetic characteristics of J. regia. As the stress intensity increased, B. cereus inoculation increased the antioxidant enzyme activities in walnut seedlings and changed their photosynthetic characteristics. However, levels of osmotic adjustment substances were decreased as a result of PGPR inoculation. Regardless of water status, B. cereus inoculation induced a significant increase in IAA, gibberellins, and zeatin contents in J. regia. Under well-watered and light stress conditions, the abscisic acid content of walnut was significantly increased by B. cereus inoculation. Additionally, B. cereus inoculation significantly promoted the growth of plants in terms of ground diameter and plant height. As a result, PGPR inoculation could improve the drought resistance of J. regia and improve its photosynthetic characteristics and growth, suggesting that it is a useful supplementary measure for use in afforestation in arid and semiarid environments.

Abstract Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are beneficial bacteria that survive within the range of plant rhizosphere and can promote plant growth. The effects of PGPR in promoting plant growth, activating soil nutrients, reducing fertilizer application, and improving the resistance of plant inducible system have been widely investigated. However, few studies have investigated PGPR as elicitors of tolerance to abiotic stresses, especially drought stress. In this study, the effects of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus X128 on the photosynthetic rate (P n), stomatal conductance (G s), intracellular CO2 concentration (C i), and total chlorophyll content [Chl(a+b)] of Sambucus williamsii Hance seedling leaves under moderate drought stress and drought-rewatering conditions were determined. Compared with those of uninoculated seedlings, the average P n values during the entire drought stress of inoculated seedlings increased by 12.99%. As the drought duration was lengthened, C i of uninoculated leaves continued to increase after rapidly declining, whereas G s continuously decreased. Furthermore, their photosynthetic properties were simultaneously restricted by stomatal and non-stomatal factors. After X128 inoculation, C i and G s of S. williamsii Hance leaves continued to decrease, and their photosynthetic properties were mainly restricted by stomatal factors. At the end of the drought stress, water stress reduced [Chl(a + b)] of S. williamsii Hance leaves by 13.49%. However, X128 inoculation decreased this deficit to only 7.39%. After water supply was recovered, P n, G s , and [Chl(a+b)] in uninoculated leaves were reduced by 14.23%, 12.02%, and 5.86%, respectively, relative to those under well-watered conditions. However, C i increased by 6.48%. Compared with those of uninoculated seedlings, P n, G s , and [Chl(a+b)] in X128-inoculated seedlings were increased by 9.83%, 9.30%, and 6.85%, respectively. Therefore, the inoculation of X128 under arid environments can mitigate the reduction of chlorophyll, delay the restriction caused by non-stomatal factors to P n in plant leaves under water stress, and can be more conducive to the recovery of photosynthetic functions of leaves after water supply is recovered.

Lipid molecules and fatty acids were analyzed using lipidomics to understand the change of lipid structure and metabolism in the hepatopancreas of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). The crabs fed diets with four oil sources (palm oil, olive oil, safflower seed oil and purple perilla oil) for 8 weeks. Palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid were the most abundant fatty acids in these oil types, respectively. Sixteen lipid classes were identified in the hepatopancreas. Triglycerides, phosphatidylcholines, diacylglycerols, and phosphatidylethanolamines in hepatopancreas were analysis deeply in this study. The relative contents of main lipid classes in the hepatopancreas were all significantly influenced by dietary oil sources. A similar pattern of lipid metabolism was observed in the E. sinensis fed palm oil and olive oil diets with an increasing quantity of C18:2n-6 in sn-1, 3 of triglycerides. Polyunsaturated fatty acids were distributed mainly in the sn-1, 3 position in triglycerides and in the sn-2 position in diacylglycerols and phospholipids. The abundance of C18:3n-3 in the diet could not significantly increase the contents of EPA and DHA in the hepatopancreas. Meanwhile, there was no C18:3n-3 at the sn-1 and no C18:0 at the sn-2 positions in phosphatidylcholines. This study was the first attempt on using lipidomics in crustaceans to understand the impact of dietary oil source on the structure of lipids stored in crustaceans. It provides a new insight and theoretical basis to understand the mechanism on the difference in lipid composition in the diet and in the tissue of crustaceans.

This article analyses the transmission path of the international commodity futures market’s impact on the Chinese economy. We use the MIDAS model and daily data to predict China’s CPI in real time. Empirical analysis results show that (1) the influence of high-frequency explanatory variables on low-frequency CPI is different. The optimal lag orders of domestic high-frequency variables are all around 23, which can be regarded as one month in practice, indicating that their CPI influence takes one month to show. (2) Both the univariate MIDAS model and the multivariate MIDAS combined prediction model have good performance in prediction accuracy. (3) The predicted results of the multivariate MIDAS combined prediction model for CPI in China’s normal months are relatively excellent. However, when exceptional circumstances occur, the prediction results will show a specific deviation, and the prediction accuracy will also be reduced. Finally, some feasible suggestions are put forward according to the research results.

Adversarial examples have aroused great attention during the past years owing to their threat to the deep neural networks (DNNs). Recently, they have been successfully extended to video models. Compared with image cases, the sparse adversarial perturbations in the videos can not only reduce the computation complexity, but also guarantee the crypticity of adversarial examples. In this paper, we propose an efficient attack to generate adversarial video perturbations with large sparsity in both the temporal (inter-frames) and spatial (intra-frames) domains. Specifically, we select the key frames and key pixels according to the gradient feedback of the target models by computing the forward derivative, and then add the perturbations on them. To overcome the problem of dimensional explosion in the video, we introduce super-pixels to decrease the number of pixels that need to compute gradients. The proposed method is finally verified under both the white-box and black-box settings. We estimate the gradients using natural evolution strategy (NES) in the black-box attacks. The experiments are conducted on two widely used datasets: UCF101 and HMDB51 versus two mainstream models: C3D and LRCN. Results show that compared with the state-of-the-art method, our method can achieve the similar attacking performance, but it pollutes only

Deep neural networks in the area of information security are facing a severe threat from adversarial examples (AEs). Existing methods of AE generation use two optimization models: (1) taking the successful attack as the objective function and limiting perturbations as the constraint; (2) taking the minimum of adversarial perturbations as the target and the successful attack as the constraint. These all involve two fundamental problems of AEs: the minimum boundary of constructing the AEs and whether that boundary is reachable. The reachability means whether the AEs of successful attack models exist equal to that boundary. Previous optimization models have no complete answer to the problems. Therefore, in this paper, for the first problem, we propose the definition of the minimum AEs and give the theoretical lower bound of the amplitude of the minimum AEs. For the second problem, we prove that solving the generation of the minimum AEs is an NPC problem, and then based on its computational inaccessibility, we establish a new third optimization model. This model is general and can adapt to any constraint. To verify the model, we devise two specific methods for generating controllable AEs under the widely used distance evaluation standard of adversarial perturbations, namely Lp constraint and SSIM constraint (structural similarity). This model limits the amplitude of the AEs, reduces the solution space’s search cost, and is further improved in efficiency. In theory, those AEs generated by the new model which are closer to the actual minimum adversarial boundary overcome the blindness of the adversarial amplitude setting of the existing methods and further improve the attack success rate. In addition, this model can generate accurate AEs with controllable amplitude under different constraints, which is suitable for different application scenarios. In addition, through extensive experiments, they demonstrate a better attack ability under the same constraints as other baseline attacks. For all the datasets we test in the experiment, compared with other baseline methods, the attack success rate of our method is improved by approximately 10%.

Thermal energy storage (TES) system plays an essential role in the utilization and exploitation of renewable energy sources. Over the last two decades, single-tank thermocline technology has received much attention due to its high cost-effectiveness compared to the conventional two-tank storage systems. The present paper focuses on clarifying the performance indicators and the effects of different influencing factors for the thermocline TES systems. We collect the various performance indicators used in the existing literature, and classify them into three categories: (1) ones directly reflecting the quantity or quality of the stored thermal energy; (2) ones describing the thermal stratification level of the hot and cold regions; (3) ones characterizing the thermo-hydrodynamic features within the thermocline tanks. The detailed analyses on these three categories of indicators are conducted. Moreover, the relevant influencing factors, including injecting flow rate of heat transfer fluid, working temperature, flow distributor, and inlet/outlet location, are discussed systematically. The comprehensive summary, detailed analyses and comparison provided by this work will be an important reference for the future study of thermocline TES systems.

1α,25(OH)2D3 (vitamin D3) is crucial for mineral homeostasis in mammals, but the precise effects of 1α,25(OH)2D3 in adipose tissue remain to be clarified in vivo. The initial 25-hydroxylation is catalyzed by liver microsomal cytochrome P450 2R1 (CYP2R1), which is conserved in vertebrates. To probe the physiological function(s) of 1α,25(OH)2D3 in teleosts, we generated two independent cyp2r1-deficient zebrafish lines. These mutants exhibit retarded growth and increased obesity, especially in the visceral adipose tissue (VAT). These defects could be rescued with 25(OH)D3 treatments. ChIP-PCR analyses demonstrated that pgc1a is the target of the vitamin D receptor in the liver and VAT of zebrafish. Significantly decreased protein levels of Pgc1a, impaired mitochondrial biogenesis, and free fatty acid oxidation are also observed in the cyp2r1 mutant VAT. Our results demonstrate that regulation of 1α,25(OH)2D3 during lipid metabolism occurs through the regulation of Pgc1a for mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative metabolism within zebrafish VAT.

The issue of how to alleviate the negative effects imposed by water stress is an interesting problem. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) colonize the rhizosphere of plants and are known to promote the growth of crops. However, there are few studies characterizing the physiological response of plants to drought stress after PGPR inoculation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of different PGPRs in arid environments and then investigated the effects of PGPR inoculation under drought stress on the physiological characteristics and growth of North China red elder (Sambucus williamsii) nursery container seedlings. The viable count of different PGPRs under drought stress varies widely, and the drought tolerance of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus X128 was significantly higher than that of other PGPRs. In comparison with non-inoculation, inoculation with X128 in an arid environment significantly increased stomatal conductance and mitigated the inhibition of net photosynthetic rate caused by drought stress; this mitigating effect of inoculation is enhanced as the level of drought stress increases. Relative to non-inoculated seedlings, cytokinin levels in the leaves increased by 91.17% under severe drought stress conditions in inoculated seedlings. However, X128 inoculation decreased this deficit to only 44.54%. Compared with non-inoculated seedlings, the relative water content of inoculated seedlings under severe drought stress increased by 15.06%, however the relative conductivity decreased by 12.48%. Consequently, X128 could increase dry matter accumulation of S. williamsii regardless of watering status, indicative of the greater benefits of PGPR on shoot growth than root. Therefore, inoculation of A. calcoaceticus X128 under drought conditions play a significant role for alleviating the negative effects imposed by water stress and promoting plant growth.

Accurate methods to estimate the aboveground biomass (AGB) of mangroves are required to monitor the subtle changes over time and assess their carbon sequestration. The AGB of forests is a function of canopy-related information (canopy density, vegetation status), structures, and tree heights. However, few studies have attended to integrating these factors to build models of the AGB of mangrove plantations. The objective of this study was to develop an accurate and robust biomass estimation of mangrove plantations using Chinese satellite optical, SAR, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) data based digital surface models (DSM). This paper chose Qi’ao Island, which forms the largest contiguous area of mangrove plantation in China, as the study area. Several field visits collected 127 AGB samples. The models for AGB estimation were developed using the random forest algorithm and integrating images from multiple sources: optical images from Gaofen-2 (GF-2), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from Gaofen-3 (GF-3), and UAV-based digital surface model (DSM) data. The performance of the models was assessed using the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and relative RMSE (RMSEr), based on five-fold cross-validation and stratified random sampling approach. The results showed that images from the GF-2 optical (RMSE = 33.49 t/ha, RMSEr = 21.55%) or GF-3 SAR (RMSE = 35.32 t/ha, RMSEr = 22.72%) can be used appropriately to monitor the AGB of the mangrove plantation. The AGB models derived from a combination of the GF-2 and GF-3 datasets yielded a higher accuracy (RMSE = 29.89 t/ha, RMSEr = 19.23%) than models that used only one of them. The model that used both datasets showed a reduction of 2.32% and 3.49% in RMSEr over the GF-2 and GF-3 models, respectively. On the DSM dataset, the proposed model yielded the highest accuracy of AGB (RMSE = 25.69 t/ha, RMSEr = 16.53%). The DSM data were identified as the most important variable, due to mitigating the saturation effect observed in the optical and SAR images for a dense AGB estimation of the mangroves. The resulting map, derived from the most accurate model, was consistent with the results of field investigations and the mangrove plantation sequences. Our results indicated that the AGB can be accurately measured by integrating images from the optical, SAR, and DSM datasets to adequately represent canopy-related information, forest structures, and tree heights.

This study investigated the effect of dietary supplementation of yeast nucleotides on the growth, non-specific immunity, intestine growth and intestinal microbiota of juvenile hybrid tilapia. Tilapia (initial average weight of 8.02 g) was fed test diets supplemented with a yeast-originated nucleotide mixture (0, 0.15, 0.30, 0.60, and 1.20 g/100 g diet) for 8 weeks. Fish fed the diet with 0.60% nucleotide had significantly higher weight gain than the control group (P < 0.05). Feed efficiency was improved in the fish fed 0.60 and 1.20% nucleotide compared with that in the control group. The optimal doses of nucleotides supplementation for growth and feed efficiency of fish were determined as 0.63 and 0.81%, respectively. Intestinal growth was improved in the 0.30 and 0.60% groups, as indicated by significant increase in intestine length. The fish fed 0.60 and 1.20% nucleotide showed higher super oxide dismutase (SOD) activity and lower malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the liver than the control fish, indicating enhancement of the anti-oxidant status. Serum lysozyme activity was significantly increased in the 0.15 and 0.3% nucleotide supplementation groups, suggesting an enhancement effect on the non-specific immune response. Lastly, dietary nucleotides supplementation exerted moderate influence on the intestinal microbiota of hybrid tilapia. A reduction in the cumulative abundance of putative butyrate-producing species was observed in the intestinal microbiota of fish fed diets with 0.60% nucleotide compared with the control, implying an interaction between dietary nucleotides and butyrate production. Briefly, dietary supplementation with 0.60% nucleotide improve the growth performance, immune activity and intestine growth in tilapia. AlCoCrFeNiTi is one kind of high entropy alloys with potential applications in aerospace, electronics and machinery manufacturing, etc. Its microstructure, thermodynamic and mechanical properties vary with Al and Ti contents. The disordered structures of Al _x CoCrFeNiTi _1− _x ( x = 0–1.0) alloys were generated and screened with the special quasi-random method. First-principles calculations with the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof functional and projector-augmented wave potential were carried out to further identify the structures and assess their thermodynamic and mechanical properties. The measured lattice constants and observed phase transition from bcc to fcc with Ti addition and Al reduction were reproduced in the calculations. The predicted transition point is at the Al content of about 8 at%. The heat capacity of the bcc and fcc structures exhibit similar temperature dependence, matching well with the empirical Dulong-Petit Model and the quantum Debye Model. The elastic constants and elastic moduli vary with the phase structures and compositions. The studied Al _x CoCrFeNiTi _1− _x alloys are predicted to possess good comprehensive mechanical performances, especially for x = 0.8 and 0.6 for the bcc structures and x = 0.5 for the fcc structures. The addition/reduction of Al atoms from the systems alters the electron localization/delocalization that has considerable influence on the interatomic interaction strength in the alloy systems.

Aquatic animals have a close relationship with water, but differences in their symbiotic bacteria and the bacterial composition in water remains unclear. Wild or domestic Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) and the water in which they live were collected from four sampling sites in Jiangsu and Shanghai, China. Bacterial composition in water, gills or guts of E. sinensis, were compared by high-throughput sequencing using 16S rRNA genes. Analysis of >660,000 sequences indicated that bacterial diversity was higher in water than in gills or guts. Tenericutes and Proteobacteria were dominant phyla in guts, while Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were dominant in gills and water. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis indicated that microbiota from gills, guts or water clearly separated into three groups, suggesting that crabs harbor a more specific microbial community than the water in which they live. The dominant OTUs in crab gut were related to Mycoplasmataceae, which were low in abundance in gills, showing that, like mammals, crabs have body-site specific microbiota. OTUs related to Ilumatobacter and Albimonas, which are commonly present in sediment and seawater, were dominant in gills but almost absent from the sampled water. Considering E. sinensis are bottom-dwelling crustacean and they mate in saline water or seawater, behavior and life cycle of crabs may play an important role in shaping the symbiotic bacterial pattern. This study revealed the relationship between the symbiotic bacteria of Chinese mitten crab and their habitat, affording information on the assembly factors of commensal bacteria in aquatic animals.

In the malware detection process, obfuscated malicious codes cannot be efficiently and accurately detected solely in the dynamic or static feature space. Aiming at this problem, an integrative feature extraction algorithm based on simhash was proposed, which combines the static information e.g., API (Application Programming Interface) calls and dynamic information (such as file, registry and network behaviors) of malicious samples to form integrative features. The experiment extracts the integrative features of some static information and dynamic information, and then compares the classification, time and obfuscated-detection performance of the static, dynamic and integrated features, respectively, by using several common machine learning algorithms. The results show that the integrative features have better time performance than the static features, and better classification performance than the dynamic features, and almost the same obfuscated-detection performance as the dynamic features. This algorithm can provide some support for feature extraction of malware detection.

A comprehensive numerical study on coupled heat and mass transfer in an earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHE) is conducted by self-complied program based on the finite volume method. The soil thermal and moisture coupled characteristics in the vicinity of the pipe and the thermal performance of the EAHE are evaluated by a two-dimensional simulation model. The model of the EAHE is verified by the experimental data, which achieved a good agreement with each other. The numerical results show that there is an obvious moisture peak in the radial direction, and the peak position radially moves away from the wall of the pipe over time. It is also found that the thermal performance of the heat and mass transfer model in soil is better than the pure heat conduction model.

PM _2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than 2.5 μm) and PM _10 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than 10 μm) samples were collected by high-volume air samplers simultaneously at a rural site and an urban site in Beijing, China. Various carbohydrates were quantified by high-performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD), including the sugar alcohols mannitol and arabitol, recently proposed as molecular tracers for fungal aerosol. The annual average concentrations of arabitol in PM _2.5 and PM _10 at the urban site were 7.4 ± 9.4 and 21.0 ± 20.4 ng m ^−3 , and the respective mannitol concentrations were 10.3 ± 9.5 and 31.9 ± 26.9 ng m ^−3 . During summer and autumn, higher arabitol and mannitol levels than during spring and winter were observed in coarse particles, probably due to different dominant sources of fungal spores in different seasons. In the dry season (i.e., winter and spring) in Beijing, probably only the suspension from exposed surfaces (e.g., soil resuspension, transported dust, etc) can be regarded as the main sources for fungal aerosols. On the other hand, in summer and autumn, fungal spores in the atmosphere can be derived from more complex sources, including plants, vegetation decomposition and agricultural activity, such as ploughing; these fungal spore sources may contribute more to coarse PM. Moreover, statistical analysis according to typical seasonal patterns, including a dry season (December 2010 to March 2011) and a wet season (July to September 2011), revealed different variations of fungal spores in different seasons. Although fungal spore levels at rural sites were reported to be consistently higher than those at urban sites in other studies, our findings showed the opposite pattern, indicating a high abundance of fungal spores in the urban area of this Chinese megacity.
