International audience; Urbanization is one of the main causes of land use change, especially from 1990 to now in China, but knowledge of its effect on different functional groups of carabids and spiders in the adjacent rural areas over time remains limited. We assessed whether landscape alterations (1993 versus 2013) drove changes in carabid and spider functional groups (1995 versus 2013) in an agricultural landscape located on the fringe of a rapidly growing city in China. Although built-up land increased from 6.3% to 32% across the whole landscape, the overall species richness of carabids and spiders did not decline. In contrast to the reduction in species richness of large carabids, the species richness of small carabids increased. Species richness of both large and small spiders increased. The species composition of carabids and spiders significantly changed between 1995 and 2013. Species compositions of large, predatory carabids and large or ground-hunting spiders were more sensitive to the changes in built-up land than those of small, omnivorous carabids and small or web-building spiders. The amount of grassland (abandoned land covered by wild grass) also increased as farmers began to work in the city. The increased grassland significantly contributed to the increased species richness of predatory and macropterous carabids. However, increased landscape diversity did not affect species richness of either carabids or spiders. High landscape diversity was related to reduction in field size, resulting in a decrease in the mean body size of carabids. This indicates that evaluating the effect of landscape change on carabid and spider diversity should be based on their functional traits. Different taxa, even different functional groups, have different responses to landscape change. The increase in built-up land did not immediately reduce species richness at the urban fringe. Increasing wild grasslands and combining smaller fields may benefit farmland biodiversity in this region.

Participatory approach is useful to clarify local interests, and improve planning activities. This paper aims to evaluate local interests change and make improvements of rural development planning activities as a response. Participatory approaches were used to make rural development planning in 2007. According to the planning activities in 2007, implementation of plans and local developing requirements were tested from local perspective in 2012. Comparing local developing requirements in 2007 and 2012, local interests changes were clarified and used to advise planning activities improvements. Wangzhuang village, Hebei province, China, was chosen as the case study. The results suggest that local preference was helpful to clarify planning goals. Conflicts between different stakeholders’ interests were mainly about planning activities related to local daily life. Local interests showed a fast changeable character in a short term. These interests generally had a stable requirement on agriculture production improvement, while changed in other aspects during local community development. Participatory approach efficiently identified local interests priority and developing requirements change with a low cost. Then advised planning activities improvements consistent supported local sustainable development. We argue that taking planning activities improvements in response to local interests change through participatory approach could efficiently stimulate rural development.

Wild bees provide important pollination services for crops and wild plants. While land use intensification has resulted in steep declines of wild bee diversity across agricultural landscapes, the creation of semi-natural habitats has been proposed as a counter-measure. However, the relative value of semi-natural and natural habitats in promoting wild bees has rarely been studied, especially for China that harbors the world's largest plantation forest area, characterized by intensively managed, mono-dominant stands of wind-pollinated tree species. We sampled wild bees in apple orchards to assess how their assemblages were influenced by semi-natural habitats in the surrounding landscape and the local flowering ground-cover. Bee abundance declined with increasing isolation from natural shrubland. In contrast, wild bee diversity and abundance were negatively linked to plantation forests. For the abundance of large bees, this effect was partly ameliorated by local flowering ground-cover. Maintaining or restoring wild bee assemblages in agricultural landscapes therefore requires careful evaluations of restoration measures such as forest planting. Availability of local flower resources and nearby natural shrubland appeared particularly important to enhance wild bees and their potential services in apple orchards.

Aim: Following the near-complete destruction of China’s forest ecosystems during the 20th century, recent reforestation programmes have created large-scale mosaics of protected secondary and plantation forests. These restored forests are often assumed to have limited biodiversity conservation value, but large-scale evaluations of their diversity are lacking. In our study, we compared α-diversity and species dissimilarity patterns of vascular plants and ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in restored secondary and plantation forests to remnant mature forests across North-eastern temperate China. We also assessed functional traits of beetles and cross-taxon diversity links to evaluate differences in ecosystem functioning among forest types. // Location: Forested landscapes between Beijing and China’s North Korean and Russian borders. // Methods: Vascular plant and ground beetle assemblages were recorded in 159 temperate forest plots. The α-diversity and species compositional dissimilarity of these taxa and the functional traits of beetles were compared between plantation, secondary and mature forest ecosystems. // Results: Herbaceous plant species richness peaked in mature forests, while carabid and woody plant diversity did not differ between forest types. Species dissimilarity of carabids was lowest in mature forests and highest in plantation forests. Mature forest contained the highest proportion of carnivorous beetles, and secondary forests of large-bodied carabids. Carabid diversity and woody plant species richness were positively correlated in mature forests, but not in secondary or plantation forests. // Main conclusions: While China’s mature forests show a great conservation value in harbouring highly diverse herbaceous plant assemblages and an abundance of distinct invertebrate trait groups such as small predatory carabids, China’s restored temperate forests also support a high diversity of woody plants and carabids. Overall, our findings offer an encouraging conservation message for biodiversity conservation in China, and demonstrate the importance of policy measures that ensure effective long-term protection of both, China’s remnant mature forests, but also its new forest ecosystems.

Agroecosystems are complex socio-ecological systems that are managed by farmers to achieve desired outcomes, including economic income and environmental benefits contributed by ecosystem services (ES). Therefore, understanding farmers&rsquo, attitudes for ES will provide references for targeted agricultural environment management, which is critical to achieving the sustainable development of agriculture. The aim of this study is to identify the attitudes of farmers regarding ES, and to test whether and how annual household income and social demographic characteristics affect farmers&rsquo, attitudes toward ES. Using face-to-face interviews to collect data and the hypothesis of environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) to provide an analytical framework, the results reveal that, in general, the perceptions of farmers&rsquo, attitudes on ES are highly complex, caused by characteristics of the farmers. Furthermore, the inflection points of the U-shaped curves, where priorities change from increasing income to paying more attention to waste assimilation and biological pest control, are identified at 17,091 and 25,071RMB, respectively. Initiatives that aim to achieve sustainable agricultural development by strengthening ES provisions should be sensitive to farmers&rsquo, perceptions. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen farmers&rsquo, educational attainment, concentrate fragmented cultivation area and create reasonable incentives for preserving and restoring of ES and increasing farmers&rsquo, income together, which then can enhance the positive outcomes from income growth.

Several studies have documented the semi-natural habitats and heterogeneous landscape patterns play a crucial role in maintaining spider diversity in agricultural landscapes. However, which types of semi-natural habitat contribute more to conserve spider diversity and functional traits, and how they respond to landscape patterns at different landscape scales are still poorly understood. Thereby, we sampled epigeic spider communities by pitfall traps within recovered grasslands, plantation forests and croplands around three villages with different altitudes in northern China and surveyed the surrounding landscape structures in both 2017 and 2018. The results confirmed the diverse distribution of spiders in different habitat types. There was a greater spider activity density in recovered grasslands than that of plantation forests or croplands significantly. Furthermore, both recovered grasslands and plantation forests contained more species richness than croplands. Moreover, the spider community in the recovered grasslands and cropland had more similar functional trait compositions (including hunting types, body size and ballooning ability) comparing to the plantation forests, which mainly due to the higher proportion of ambush hunters in recovered grassland and cropland. Secondly, the study also indicated that the proportion area of plantation forest negatively affected spider diversity at multi-scales. Meanwhile, recovered grassland with high landscape diversity would benefit spider diversity only on a small scale like a 100 m radius. The spider functional traits were insensitive to landscape patterns. Overall, the study implies that increasing recovered grassland rather than plantation forest could protect spider diversity in northern China. The findings presented in this paper added to our understanding of how landscapes and different semi-natural affect the diversity of spiders and their functional traits. Meanwhile, the research results represent a further step towards developing more suitable landscape patterns and choosing restoration semi-natural types for policymakers to enhance biodiversity in agricultural landscapes.

Agricultural intensification has resulted in major losses of biodiversity due to landscape homogenization and an increasing use of agrochemicals. It has often been assumed that associated changes in environmental conditions are impacting composition and diversity of two main ground-dwelling generalist predator taxa, carabid beetles and epigaeic spiders, in similar ways. Here, we test how variations in environmental conditions at local scales (plant diversity and total soil nitrogen, Ntot) and landscape-scale (mean patch size) affect species composition, richness and abundance of ground beetles and epigaeic spiders in semi-natural and cultivated habitats of an agricultural landscape. We specifically test the hypotheses that both taxa are more diverse in semi-natural than cultivated habitats, but that due to their weaker dispersal ability, ground beetles are more strongly linked to local factors than spiders. Our results indicate that in our study area, carabid diversity shows no significant difference between semi-natural habitats and cropland, while spider abundance is significantly enhanced in semi-natural habitats. Ntot significantly affected carabid species richness and abundance, but had a limited influence on spider abundances. The species composition of both carabids and spiders was influenced by plant diversity, while Ntot played a significant role in determining spider assemblages but not carabid composition. There was no significant effect of the mean patch size in the surroundings landscape on either spider or carabid species. Nonetheless, in landscapes with small patch sizes, spider abundance decreased with increasing Ntot, while in landscapes with large sized patches, this relationship was reversed. The differences in responses of these taxa to local and landscape-scale environmental factors suggests that scale- and taxon-specific targets need to be established to improve the efficiency of measures aimed at enhancing ecosystem services provisions by these key pest control agents.

Provisioning services have always been the main focus of agriculture, and which have led to a decline in biodiversity and have damaged a number of other services. Agriculture should contribute to current and future food security while producing multiple ecosystem services (ES). Restoration outcomes of multiple ES were affected by different socioeconomic drivers, thus a better understanding of how multiple ES respond to socioeconomic drivers can help to restore multiple ES. This paper used rural people's perceptions of ES to quantify and map ecosystem service obtainment and demand in the Mengyin County, China. An integrative index of multiple ecosystem services (IMES) was used to effectively aggregate the values of multiple ES. The threat categorization framework is designed to communicate the degree to which the adequate and sustainable provision of multiple ES is threatened, in order to prioritize conservation actions. The results revealed that 6 townships in the Mengyin County exhibited an excessive obtainment situation (demand is less than obtainment) of multiple ES; an insufficient obtainment situation (demand is greater than obtainment) of multiple ES was mainly situated in the northern part of Mengyin County. Overall, the current state of multiple ES across Mengyin County is classified as “Endangered” classification according to application of threat categorization framework. It is necessary to restructure and manage socioeconomic factors for multiple ES. At national level, the macro decision-making (controlling population density) and the mechanisms (attracting high-quality human resources into the rural) will play an important role in promoting multiple ES management, and it is necessary to provide 3 or more years of tailored educational resources for rural residents to advance multiple ES in agricultural landscape. Development of agricultural PES programs in China that enable farmers to profit from production ES is a sustainable strategy for increasing multiple ecosystem services.

Agricultural intensification has caused severe declines in ground-dwelling arthropods and associated ecosystem services. The conservation and re-establishment of semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes represent widely accepted measures to counter these declines. The effectiveness of these measures nonetheless varies between target taxa and their functional traits, while also being affected by local management. Here, we studied how species richness and abundance of different functional groups of carabid beetles and spiders in apple orchards were affected by landscape complexity (% semi-natural habitat) and local management intensity (mowing and soil total nitrogen (STN) content). Both abundance and species richness of non-carnivorous carabids and carabids overall were negatively affected by STN, while the abundance of carnivorous carabids and carabids overall was affected by interactive effects of mowing and landscape complexity, showing a positive response to mowing where semi-natural habitats are scarce, but negative responses in landscapes with a higher proportion of semi-natural habitats. The abundance of ground-hunting spiders and spiders overall was generally positively related to % semi-natural habitats, while the abundance of web-building spiders and the species richness of ground-hunting spiders showed a positive correlation with STN at landscapes with a low or medium abundance of semi-natural habitats, but a negative correlation where semi-natural habitats were more abundant. Non-carnivorous carabid diversity benefitted from low nitrogen application, while carnivorous carabid abundance benefitted from mowing intensity especially in simple and structurally homogenous agricultural landscapes. Both web-building and ground-hunting spiders positively responded to low nitrogen applications and intermediate landscape complexity. Overall, a low local management intensity promoted carabid beetles, while spiders were favored by increasing landscape complexity. We conclude that taxon- and functional group-specific, multi-scale conservation strategies are therefore required to conserve invertebrate predators in apple orchards.

Understanding the response of plant species richness to environmental filters is critical for conservation management as there is an increasing emphasis on plant restoration in urban/rural planning. However, empirical studies on the effects that the regional species pool has on plant species richness often overlook small spatial scales, therefore requiring more comprehensive approaches. As mountains can act as barriers to plant dispersal, the impact on the species pool, particularly, should be a priority. This study aimed to investigate how the regional species pool affects the local plant species richness in a multivariate context. We sampled vascular plant communities along three transects located in three valleys across the Chongli District, China, where four common habitat types were selected for sampling: grassland, shrubbery, pure forest, and mixed forest. We compared the differences in the multi-scale species richness and species composition between habitats and regions and used piecewise structural equation modeling to analyze the relative importance of the regional species pool, habitat species pool, soil resource availability, and exposure for local plant richness. The β-diversity had the highest contribution to the total species richness between valleys and habitats. The species composition between regions and habitats showed a significant difference and the local species richness was most strongly affected by the soil characteristics, but effects from the regional species pool still played an important role. Conservation efforts and urban/rural planning should use a multi-level and multi-scale approach based on a detailed structural investigation.

This study investigated the effects of different additives on fermentation quality and aerobic stability of Leymus chinensis silage. Bees provide important pollination services for crops, but pollination limitation is a common problem in agricultural landscapes worldwide. To promote ecological intensification in fruit production, more knowledge is needed concerning the interacting effects of insect pollination services and soil fertility on crop quality and quantity. We investigated the effects of three pollination treatments (open, self and hand pollination) on apple quantity and quality parameters. We also analyzed the effects of bee abundance (wild bees and managed honeybees (Apis mellifera)) and soil nitrogen on fruit quantity and quality, and the responses of bee abundance and species richness to landscape metrics. Apple fruit set and yield of open pollinated flowers increased by 57 % and 25 t/ha (compared to bagged controls), respectively. Hand pollination further enhanced yields by 7 t/ha (compared to open pollination; i.e. to 39 t/ha), indicating pollination limitation in the orchards. Seed number was highest in open pollinated fruits, and increased with bee abundance if soil nitrogen was low, but decreased with bee abundance at high nitrogen levels, possibly due to higher flower density resulting in pollinator dilution effects. Higher seed numbers reduced the proportion of deformed apples and thus increased fruit quality. The percent of surrounding semi-natural habitats positively affected species richness of wild bees in apple orchards. We conclude that yield and quality of apples may benefit from ecological intensification comprising the augmentation of wild bees by semi-natural habitat and lowering of fertilizer inputs.

The reductions of ecosystem services (ES) initiated by land consolidation towards intensive agriculture has been recognized in many parts of the world. Land consolidation in China is experiencing a transformation towards sustainability, which may be promoted by learning the experience of Europe to introduce agri-environment measures (AEM). This paper focused on the typical engineering works of land consolidation projects (LCP) to discuss the requirements and possibilities of introducing AEM in LCP in China. Evidence was sought through the ES changes and farmers' attitudes. Based on a database collected from the literature, the changes of ES under LCP across China were evaluated. Household interviews were conducted to identify farmers' perception of ES changes under LCP and their preference of AEM in LCP. In consisted with our expectation, our study demonstrated the negative impacts of LCP on the environment, that the present agricultural-focused LCP in China have typically generated increases in the arable land but decreases in non-crop habitats, and extensively caused growths in food supply ES but reductions in biodiversity maintenance ES. This tendency would threaten the provision of multiple ES and the ultimate sustainability of agriculture. It reflected the urgent requirements of environment integration in LCP in China, for which AEM are efficient instruments. Our results further illustrated the high possibilities of introducing AEM in LCP based on the evidence that the AEM welcomed by the majority of farmers involved all the engineering works, although the farmers selected AEM mainly due to their pursuit of aesthetic instead of biodiversity consideration. To promote land consolidation in China towards sustainability, it is essential to integrate ES into the goals of land use policy, set up the quantitative parameter controlling for non-crop habitats, and introduce AEM in LCP guidelines.

This study aimed to determine the fermentation characteristics, nutrient composition and in vitro digestibility of desert wormwood (DW, Artemisia desertorum Spreng.) silage as the sole ingredient, or mixed with high-moisture maize (corn) straw (HMCS). Desert wormwood and HMCS were harvested and chopped (1–2 cm) then ensiled in laboratory silos (25 cm high with an internal diameter of 7·6 cm) at a density of 550 g L−1 at room temperature for 60 days. The proportions of DW in the DW/HMCS mixtures were 1, 0·75, 0·50, 0·25 and 0, based on fresh weight. The silages were analysed for fermentation characteristics, nutrient composition and in vitro digestibility. Desert wormwood ensiled with HMCS had lower pH and acetic acid concentration and higher lactic acid concentration as the proportion of DW decreased. As the proportion of DW decreased, the crude protein concentration and the in vitro digestibility of dry matter increased and the concentrations of neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre and acid detergent lignin decreased. This study has indicated that mixing HMCS with DW can improve the fermentation quality and nutrient composition of these silage mixtures.

Leymus chinensis is an important grass in China and Russia. Six lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains (LB, LPL1, LPL2, LPL3, LCL and WH) from L. chinensis silage were screened and identified and their effects on fermentation quality were investigated. All six strains were grown at 6·5% NaCl and pH 4·00. Strains LPL1, LPL2 and LPL3 were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, and LB, WH and LCL were classified as Lactobacillus brevis, Weissella hellenica and Lactobacillus casei respectively. The six isolated strains and a commercial inoculant (Lactobacillus buchneri) were added to L. chinensis for ensiling at densities of 500 and 600 kg m−3. The control was sprayed with the same volume of distilled water. The effects of the strains on fermentation quality after 45 d ensiling and aerobic stability during 8 d of exposure to air were evaluated. Unreasonable land use planning can reduce ecosystem service value and result in unsustainable land use. In this paper, the changes of ecosystem service value were investigated by using the GIS and dynamic simulation model of land use in Miyun of Beijing, China, based on the land use at four time points including 1991, 2006, 2021 and one improved scenario, respectively. The results showed the total ecosystem service value of Miyun was about 2968.34 million Yuan in 1991, 3304.72 million Yuan in 2006, 3106.48 million Yuan in 2021, and 3759.77 million Yuan in the improved scenario. In terms of ecosystem service function, the functions of water supply and soil formation and retention accounted for the largest proportion, which were 19.99% and 14.58% respectively, whereas the functions of food supply and recreation and culture were only 1.83% and 5.99%, respectively. Coefficients of sensitivity for forest cover, water bodies and arable land were relatively large, which were 0.73, 0.28 and 0.14, respectively. The contribution factors of total ecosystem service value with the land use change during different periods were mainly the unused land to forest cover and arable land, which respectively accounted for more than 63% and 21% of the contribution rate. These results suggested that sustainable land use planning should be undertaken with emphasis on vegetation restoration and protection of water bodies.

BACKGROUND Liver cirrhosis is associated with enhanced renal tubular sodium retention, the mechanism of which is still debated. We hypothesized that liver cirrhosis is associated with increased expression of renal epithelial sodium transporter(s). METHODS Liver cirrhosis was induced by bile duct ligation (BDL) in rats. Steady state mRNA of ENaC subunits alpha, beta, gamma serum and glucocorticoid inducible kinase (Sgk1) were measured by TaqMan PCR in kidney homogenates at week 1, 2, 3 and 4 after BDL. Renal protein content of ENaC subunits, ubiquitin-protein-ligase Nedd4-2 and NaCl cotransporter (NCC) were assessed by western blot. Subcellular localization of ENaC subunits and NCC were analysed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS Steady state mRNA of ENaC alpha, beta and gamma were unchanged during the 4 weeks investigated, while ENaC protein decreased most prominently at week 2 (control vs BDL; alpha, -46%; beta, -81%; and gamma, -63%; n = 6). Subcellular localization of ENaC subunits was not altered at week 2. Sgk1 mRNA did not change, whereas Nedd4-2 protein was reduced by >50% 2-4 weeks after BDL. Researchers aspire to strike a balance between the production and consumption of ecosystem services (ES) in agriculture for long-term farm sustainability. One approach is to provide payments for ecosystem services (PES) through government programs. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate ecosystem services and use the evaluated information to determine what policy designs could effectively induce more services in agricultural landscapes. This research uses a theoretical and analytical framework. In this framework, farmers’ perceptions of the obtained ES, importance of ES, design rules of PES programs and management practices of PES programs are identified in Mengyin County by using surveys. The results show: (1) farmers could possibly recognize the limitations of the obtained ES and reduce their demand appropriately; (2) regulating services (e.g., pollination and biological pest control) provision is central to transforming trade-offs into synergies among ecosystem services; (3) farmers should not only attach great importance to the maintenance of soil fertility and health but also to the maintenance of semi-natural habitat, and the adoption of such an attitude could positively affect their behavior to maximize synergies among ES; and (4) farmers are program implementers; if they have a better understanding of the perceptions of ES and PES programs, the theoretical and analytical framework could help farmers, policy-makers and relevant institutions design effective schemes.

Agricultural land use is affected by government policies and leads to different consequences of regional sustainability. In this work, changes in cropping patterns including acreage, cropping locations and management-related environmental impacts were simulated under various policy scenarios for Quzhou County, China. This county is in China's major agricultural region, the North China Plain. Four dominant crop systems were categorized (winter wheat/summer maize, winter wheat/summer maize/spring maize, cotton, and vegetables) and analyzed, following two alternative policy scenarios that either prioritized government funding to subsidize crop production (“subsidy” scenario) or promoted advanced irrigation techniques (“technique” scenario). Input–output coefficients for all four crop systems were determined, mainly irrigation demand, yield, and price of produce, but other factors like a limited area of arable land and scarce regional water resources were also considered. For the simulation, a LINDO Inc. system was linked with the CLUE (Conversion of Land Use and its Effects) model. Temporal changes of crop systems were simulated with the LINDO system, whereas spatial dynamics of cropping patterns were simulated with the CLUE model, based on land suitability maps. The results show that crop patterns changed variably with time under the two scenarios, and water availability was the primary constraint on sustainability of land use. Under the subsidy scenario, winter wheat/summer maize/spring maize became dominant across the entire county, replacing other crop systems. In contrast, the vegetable system gradually occupied farmland surrounding the township under the technique scenario. The different policies produced opposite consequences for regional sustainability. Although a “subsidy” policy contributed to farmers’ income, it did not encourage water conservation for sustainable crop production, leading to land abandonment because of water shortage. In contrast, the “technique” policy partially cut direct financial benefits to farmers, but promoted water conservation and made a substantial contribution to agricultural sustainability.

Home gardens have been recognized as repositories of agricultural biodiversity across the world. The influence of socioeconomics and location-specific factors on urban gardening patterns merits continued study. Using Beijing Municipal Province in China, a rapidly urbanizing region, as a case study, we address two questions: 1) How do biodiversity patterns change between different urbanized regions in Beijing? 2) How do ecosystem services provided by Beijing home gardens change with socioeconomic status and location-based preferences of gardeners? We surveyed 104 home gardens in Beijing Municipal Province for plant biodiversity, abundance, and species ecosystem services (ES) (provisioning or cultural uses). The gardens were distributed across three urbanized regions (suburban, peri-urban, and exurban). We found that species biodiversity and abundance shift according to a hierarchy of need from ornamentals (cultural ES) to edibles (provisioning ES) with increasing distance from Beijing. These trends are related to reduced income, lowered food security, and lack of urban markets in exurban regions. Rarefaction curves indicate ornamental species drive β diversity. Ordination also showed a shift in species composition with increasing isolation from the city; Suburban and exurban gardens were the most different, while peri-urban gardens were similar to both others. Only exurban gardens had a positive relationship between species and area. High edible cover and high species density indicates that demand for edibles in exurban regions may be higher than space constraints allows. Our study better quantifies species biodiversity patterns in Beijing, and can inform urban planners about the value and usefulness of home garden space.

An understanding of how and where a landscape can be improved with green infrastructure is important for the development of land-use policies. However, it is still a big challenge to manage landscapes due to a lack of condition-based diagnosis and consistent conflicts with social–economic interests. The purpose of this study is to identify the thresholds of landscape change and to explore new reference lines of policy decision-making for balancing social–economic development and green infrastructure management. Five different landscape types and their thresholds of landscape change were identified using parametric and piecewise linear models in the district of Haidian, Beijing, PR China, and their changes and social–economic drivers were analyzed with principal component analysis and a stepwise linear regression model for the time period 1991–2010. It is shown that different thresholds of different landscapes do exist and can be identified by the area of their key elements of green infrastructure. Integrating these thresholds into a social–economic context, it is shown where and how social–economic variables can be manipulated quantitatively to achieve development targets with respect to green infrastructure in individual towns and the entire district. Green infrastructure can be managed by changing just a small proportion of social–economic investment. This paper provides a useful tool to achieve a sustainable development by balancing green infrastructure with social–economic interests.

Rural decline caused by rapid urbanization is a global issue, and village regrouping is an effective way to revitalize the countryside. The eastern plains of China (EPC) were the first regions to implement the policy of village regrouping in China. Despite being one of the most critical factors in village regrouping, home-field distances (HFDs) in these areas have received little attention. In this study, we selected 240 sample points in the EPC through spatial stratified sampling, each of which is a square of 10 &times, 10 km2. Based on high-resolution remote sensing images, the inter-regional differences of rural settlements and home-field straight-line distances (HFLDs) in the EPC were systematically analyzed. Based on the central place theory (CPT), the influencing mechanism of the HFLD, the maximum HFLD acceptable to farmers, and the reasonable number, distribution pattern, and service scope of central villages in the EPC were further explored. The results indicate that HFLDs in the EPC have significant latitude zonality and spatial autocorrelation. In the northeastern China plain (NECP), north China plain (NCP), and middle and lower reaches plain of the Yangtze River (MLPYR), the ranges of the maximum HFLD are 1000&ndash, 4000 m, 500&ndash, 2200 m, and 500&ndash, 1500 m, respectively. The distribution pattern of rural settlements, the traffic conditions, and the vehicles used by farmers during periods of land development directly impact the HFLD. HFLDs in the EPC should not exceed 3.6&ndash, 4.2 km (NECP can use the higher standard-4.2 km, NCP and MLPYR can use the lower standard-3.6 km), the service range of each rural settlement should not exceed 33.6&ndash, 45.8 km2, and the number of rural settlements per 100 km2 should be greater than three. The rural settlements should be discretely distributed so that each piece of farmland can be tended. The MLPYR demonstrates the greatest potential for village regrouping, and the Chinese government should invest more funds in village regrouping and central village construction in the MLPYR. This study can provide a case study for developing countries in the urbanization phase, so as to improve the rationality of village regrouping planning.

Looking back at a history of more than 7000 years of agricultural production, Chinese agriculture had succeeded in supporting China's ever-increasing human population without changing the stability of the agro-landscape. The traditional biodiversity-friendly management of agricultural landscapes incorporated various elaborate techniques such as the use of organic manure, traditional integrative farming approaches like dyke–pond and rice–fishery systems, crop rotations and intercropping as well as the preservation of traditional agricultural landscapes including diverse natural and semi-natural elements. These systems were developed to maintain landscapes with healthy soil quality, a complex structure and diverse habitat composition, which favoured the sustenance of diverse species and a stable ecosystem functioning. While many biodiversity-friendly elements of traditional agriculture have been maintained, further developed or extended in modern agricultural practices in some regions, the biodiversity conservation in the agricultural landscapes is generally lacking of efficient policy support. Challenges and potential measures for biodiversity conservation in the context of Chinese agricultural landscapes are discussed.

Current approaches in terrestrial biodiversity conservation focus predominantly on plants and vertebrates. While these groups account for less than 4% of the estimated global species richness, it is commonly argued that especially the species richness in higher plants is a suitable indicator of overall biodiversity. We tested this assumption, investigating species richness and equitability patterns in three highly species-rich insect families and their links with the vegetation and other environmental factors. Vegetation surveys were combined with pitfall and light trapping to establish the α-diversity of ground beetles, geometrid moths and arctiid moths on 48 plots at varying altitudes between Beijing and the Inner Mongolian Plateau. Soil pH and nutrient status were also recorded. The α-diversity patterns in the three insect families were non-congruent, and links with phytodiversity were weak. The spatial α-diversity patterns in each of the three insect families were significantly correlated with the species density of individual plant families. These links varied between the three insect taxa and were mostly negative in moths. Furthermore, geometrid moth diversity decreased with increasing elevation and decreasing soil pH. Strongly diverging α-diversity patterns across different insect taxa illustrate that it is impossible to find a simple surrogate representing cross-taxon diversity for these highly diverse groups. Furthermore, phytodiversity and vegetation composition appear to play a limited role in governing insect diversity patterns. These results underline the significant risk that current plant-focused approaches in terrestrial biodiversity conservation are inadequate in addressing the conservation needs of the vast majority of species on earth.

Soil moisture is an important indicator to describe soil conditions, and can also provide information on crop water stress and yield estimation. The combination of vegetation index (VI) and land surface temperature (LST) can provide useful information on estimation soil moisture status at regional scale. In this paper, the Huang-huai-hai (HHH) plain, an important food production area in China was selected as the study area. The potential of Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data in assessing soil moisture was investigated in this region. The 16-day composite MODIS Vegetation Index product (MOD13A2) and 8-day composite MODIS temperature product (MOD11A2) were used to calculate the TVDI. Correlation and regression analysis was carried out to relate the TVDI against in-situ soil moisture measurements data during the main growth stages of winter wheat/summer maize. The results show that a significantly negative relationship exists between the TVDI and in-situ measurements at different soil depths, but the relationship at 10-20 cm depth (R2 = 0.43) is the closest. The spatial and temporal patterns in the TVDI were also analysed. The temporal evolution of the retrieved soil moisture was consistent with crop phenological development, and the spatial distribution of retrieved soil moisture accorded with the distribution of precipitation during the whole crop growing seasons. The TVDI index was shown to be feasible for monitoring the surface soil moisture dynamically during the crop growing seasons in the HHH plain.

Diversity of ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) assemblages and sub-assemblages was compared between reafforested woodland, grassland, and intensively cultivated fields at Chongli County in Northern China. An array of eight pitfall traps per plot was used to sample the beetles on four replicate plots for each habitat. Replanted conifer woodland and semi-natural grassland harbored very similar beetle assemblages. These had significantly lower rarefied species numbers than the distinctly different assemblages recorded in cultivated fields, with differences in alpha diversity being less pronounced for large and predatory species. Carabid activity-density levels were higher in both woodland and grassland than in fields, with this trend being most pronounced for predatory and large species. To conserve high levels of gamma diversity, it is important to maintain a mosaic of agricultural areas and semi-natural habitats. The latter also form a potential source for predatory species important in pest control. It appears that woodland-specific species are rare in the study area, or they have not been able to reach and colonize the newly established woodland sites. It can also be concluded that morphological and ecological traits allow important insights into underlying ecological principles of overall diversity patterns.

Reclamation of salinity-affected land for intensive agricultural production represents a highly promising pathway towards feeding our increasing global population. Nonetheless, biodiversity and ecosystem service responses to agricultural intensification in desalinized landscapes remain poorly understood. In our study, we analyzed long-term diversity responses of carabids as important pest control agents to agricultural intensification in desalinized landscapes by comparing data from 1997 and 2014, and we analyzed the potential role of field-margins as beetle refuge habitats. Despite agricultural intensification, carabid species richness increased significantly following desalinization, with this increase being chiefly limited to field margins. Carabid assemblages also showed a dramatic temporal species turnover, leading towards a species-rich, homogeneous community dominated by generalists. Therefore, we believe that desalinization triggered positive regional diversity responses despite simultaneous agricultural intensification, with semi-natural field margins playing an increasingly important role as local diversity hotspots. Nonetheless, the highly uniform composition of the generalist beetle assemblages and its potential implications for ecosystem functioning require further scrutiny, and the targeted management of semi-natural habitats appears crucial to optimize farmland biodiversity and associated ecosystem services in desalinized agricultural landscapes.

In the intensively cultivated major crop production areas of China, large knowledge gaps still prevail with regard to the current status of biodiversity in general, and especially in relation to agriculture management and planting patterns. Effective measures for species conservation are hence widely lacking. 2. The diversity of ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) assemblages was compared between intensively managed wheat/maize fields, cotton monocultures, lawns, orchards and semi-natural woodland located in Quzhou county, a typical, intensively managed agricultural region in the North China Plain. 3. Although significant differences were found in species composition between different habitats, diversity of ground beetles in non-cropping sites was not significantly higher than in intensively managed wheat/maize double-cropping fields, while cotton monocultures had a significant lower carabid diversity. A combination of intensively managed wheat/maize double-cropping fields with orchards appears to preserve substantial proportions of ground beetle diversity. 4. To conserve the full spectrum of beetle species currently observed in the agricultural landscape of the North China Plain, the creation of both diverse habitats and a diversity of cropping systems are important, which includes a strengthening of less intensive farming practices.

The objective of this article was to study the spatial distribution pattern of rainfall erosivity. The precipitation data at each climatological station in Hebei Province, China were collected and analyzed and modeled with SPSS and ArcGIS. A simple model of estimating rainfall erosivity was developed based on the weather station data. Also, the annual average rainfall erosivity was calculated with this model. The predicted errors, statistical feature values and prediction maps obtained by using different interpolation methods were compared. The result indicated that second-order ordinary Kriging method performed better than both zero and first-order ordinary Kriging methods. Within the method of secondorder trend, Gaussian semi-variogram model performed better than other interpolation methods with the spherical or exponential models. Applying geostatistics to study rainfall erosivity spatial pattern will help to accurately and quantitatively evaluate soil erosion risk. Our research also provides digital maps that can assist in policy making in the regional soil and water conservation planning and management strategies.

The concept of participation is not intrinsic to the nature of Chinese planning systems; institutionally, they are centralized and top-down and lack local effective participation and communication between all actors. In recent years, participatory geographic information systems (PGIS) approaches have been used in natural resource planning and management. The paper discusses a concrete adoption of the methodology of PGIS into Participatory land use planning (PLUP) in the rural Shanxi province of China. A PGIS operational framework for PLUP is generalized from the project practice.

A sensitive method by fluorescence quenching for the determination of dexamethasone sodium phosphate is proposed. The method is based on the ability of phosphate to inhibit the formation of a strong fluorescent complex of Tb3+ with tiron. The fluorescence intensity trends equilibrium after a 20-minutes reaction of dexamethasone sodium phosphate and Tb3+-tiron complex. The optimal conditions for the determination of dexamethasone sodium phosphate are studied. Under optimal conditions, the linear range is 2.5 × 10−7–4 × 10−6 mol/L and the detection limit is 6.2 × 10−8 mol/L, and the relative size distribution (RSD) of 11 times determination are 2.2% and 0.8% for 5 × 10−7 mol/L and 1 × 10−6 mol/L, respectively. The developed method is successfully applied to assay the dexamethasone sodium phosphate content in pharmaceutical injections.

Mountainous regions harbor high levels of biodiversity, while often experiencing substantial pressure from agricultural production. Our current understanding of factors driving changes in the highly diverse species assemblages of these regions is generally limited. We used variance partitioning based on redundancy analysis to establish the effects of environmental variables on the species composition of vascular plants and three insect taxa (Geometridae, Arctiinae and Carabidae). These environmental determinants are linked to three distinct spatial levels: the regional level - the four study regions positioned at similar to 400 m altitudinal intervals, the landscape level - the landscape structure in the vicinity of each study plot, and the plot level the environmental conditions. at individual sampling locations. Our results showed that variations in the species composition of vascular plants and carabids were more closely linked to plot-level characteristics than to regional-level factors, while the opposite trend was observed for the two moth taxa. When effects explicitly linked to the four study regions were controlled, plant and carabid assemblages showed strong links to the percentage of semi-natural habitat at the landscape level, while geometrid and arctiinid assemblages were affected primarily by the overall plant species richness and plant coverage at the plot level. Overall, the variations in the species composition of different taxa can be explained by varying sets of environmental variables acting at different spatial scales, and the relative role of these variables is highly taxon-specific. Regional-scale approaches are crucial for biodiversity conservation in mountainous agricultural landscapes, as exemplified by the responses in the two moths taxa, while a high proportion of semi-natural habitats in the agricultural landscape is not only linked to a diverse vegetation, but also to species-rich carabid assemblages. Drought and fresh water shortage are in the way of sustainable agriculture development in the North China Plain. The scarcity of fresh water forces farmers to use shallow saline ground water, which helps to overcome drought and increase crop yields but also increases the risk of soil salinization. This paper describes salt regimes and crop responses to saline irrigation water based on field experiments conducted from October 1997 to September 2005. It was found that use of saline water causes the ECe of the topsoil (0–100 cm, Cv: 0.196∼0.330) to be higher and more variable than the subsoil (100–180 cm, Cv: 0.133∼0.219). The salt load rapidly increased, notably in the upper 80 cm and especially during the season of October 1999 to June 2000. It was concluded that the maximum soil depth to which the soil was leached during the wet season was about 150 cm. The relative yields of winter wheat could be ranked Fresh Sufficient (FS, 100%) > Fresh Limited (FL, 91.80%) > Saline Sufficient (SS, 91.63%) > Saline Limited (SL, 88.28%) > Control (C, 69.58%) and for maize FS (100%) > FL (96.37%) > SS (93.05%) > SL (90.04%)> C (89.81%). The best irrigation regime was Saline Limited for winter wheat and maize, provided rainfall is sufficient. The experiments confirm that saline irrigation water appears to be economically attractive to farmers in the short term and ecological hazards can still be controlled with proper leaching.

China has long been experiencing intense land use/cover changes (LUCC). Undesirable land use/cover changes have resulted in widespread land degradation. This study examines the temporal and spatial dynamics of land use change and land degradation as evident from land use survey datasets (1991–2001). Six prominent land degradation processes were identified, namely: desertification, secondary salinisation, loss of agricultural use, deforestation, grassland degradation and loss of wetland. Rates of conversion were calculated and distribution patterns were mapped with the aid of GIS. The results showed that these land use changes have affected the wider environment and accelerated land degradation. It provided a more complete and up-to-date picture of China's land degradation which helps to develop improved conservation policies that combat land degradation and promote sustainable land management. The diversity of carabid assemblages at newly established field margins was compared to the diversity in surrounding fields and woodland habitats at Dongbeiwang village, Beijing. Carabids were sampled using 6 pitfalls per plot at a total of 12 plots in the year 2000. Although sampled only a year after their establishment, field margins harbored the most abundant and diverse carabids assemblages of all sites. More than a quarter of carabid species encountered were furthermore restricted to catches from field margins. Also woodland and fields under rotational wheat/maize cultivation harbored some unique species. Therefore, a short term establishment of field margins is effective in enhancing diversity and abundance of carabids, an important predator group in the agricultural landscape, while only the preservation of a heterogeneous landscape will enable the conservation of the overall species diversity.

Diversity and species composition of carabid beetles were investigated at Quzhou county in the North China Plain. The study area was originally affected by high salinity and desalinized in three stages in 1973, 1978 and 1982. At sites desalinized in 1982, carabids were sampled at field margins as well as inside fields to investigate the role of field margins as refuge habitats. Furthermore, samples were taken from field margins desalinized in 1973 and 1978, respectively, to explore long-term developments of carabid assemblages following desalinization. At margins, soil salinity, N contents and the number of plant species as well as the height of dominant plants were recorded and their correlation with the species composition of carabids explored. Overall carabid diversity at Quzhou was low compared to areas not affected by high salinity. Field margins yielded significantly higher numbers of both species and individuals, whereas assemblages within the field had a low diversity and a homogeneous species composition. Carabid diversity slightly increased in relation to decreased soil salt contents and time elapsed since desalinization. These results may be explained by field margins serving as refuge to many carabid species and by an overall low species pool of carabids in Quzhou due to former high salinity, current high levels of fertilizer and pesticide applications, and by a comparatively low colonization rate of carabids to the area. As different carabid species varied strongly in their reaction to environmental parameters, the preservation of a diverse set of habitats will best protect the current diversity of these beetles in the agricultural landscape of Quzhou.

Coping with various ecological risks caused by extreme weather events of global climate change has become an important issue in regional planning, and storm water management for sustainable development. In this paper, taking Shanghai, China as a case study, four potential ecological risks were identified including flood disaster, sea-source disaster, urban heat island effect, and land subsidence. Based on spatial database, the spatial variation of these four ecological risks was evaluated, and the planning area was divided into seven responding regions with different green infrastructure strategy. The methodology developed in this study combining ecological risk evaluation with spatial regionalization planning could contribute to coping with global climate change.

A number of environmental factors were used experimentally to enhance myogenesis during muscle regeneration; however, many hormones and growth factors have been shown to have the ability to increase the rate of satellite cell division, but they only work on satellite cells that are already active in many animal experiments. Recently, the crushed muscle extract (CME) of rats was found to be able to trigger dormant adult rat satellite cells to re-enter the cell mytogenic cycle; however, the identity of the active factors present in rat CME remains unknown. In the present study, the CME was fractionated by the strategy of sequential isoelectric focusing and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) coupled with functional analysis by myoblast culture. Two satellite cell-specific myogenic factors were identified and purified from CME by this strategy. One of the factors has a molecular mass of around 7 kDa and another about 39 kDa. The factor of 39 kDa could be retained in heparin-Sepharose column and eluted with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) containing 1 M NaCl, but the 7 kDa factor did not bind to the heparin column. These two purified myogenic factors could synergistically trigger the proliferation and differentiation of dormant satellite cells, whose progenies subsequently fuse in vitro, or fuse to pre-existing partially damaged muscle fibers to form full repair of the damaged muscle fibers or to form new myotubes to replace the completely damaged muscle fibers during the cascade of muscle healing and regeneration in vivo. The identities of these two myogenic factors are under study.
