Abstract Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) is one of the most promising scaffold materials due to its ability to retain natural extracellular matrix structure. Micronized acellular dermal matrix (mADM) was prepared with no intact cell nuclei and preserved growth factors by High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) approach. And mADM-collagen wound dressings were developed with different proportion of type I collagen and recombinant humanized type III collagen. The porous structure of the mADM-collagen wound dressings made them a good candidate for preventing excessive fluid accumulation, while the collagens with gel-like texture combined with mADM powder to form pasty texture wound dressing, which preserving the moisture at the wound site. Moreover, the paste texture of the mADM-collagen wound dressing was easy to reshape to conform any wound shapes and body contours. Furthermore, the resulted mADM-collagen wound dressings showed good biocompatibility by supporting fibroblasts adhesion and proliferation in vitro. Subsequently, a murine model of full-thickness skin wounds was employed to assess its effects on wound healing. Notably, mADM-75% Col-I exhibited superior effects throughout the wound healing process, specifically it promoted neovascularization, skin appendage growth and new skin regeneration. This formulation closely mimicked the collagen ratio found in healthy skin, facilitating the favorable wound repair. These results indicated the superior performance of this mADM-collagen wound dressing providing an optimal environment for wound healing. Graphical Abstract

Objective To explore the complex mechanisms of keloid, new approaches have been developed by different strategies. However, conventional treatment did not significantly reduce the recurrence rate. This study aimed to identify new biomarkers and mechanisms for keloid progression through bioinformatics analyses.Methods In our study, microarray datasets for keloid were downloaded from the GEO database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by R software. Multiple bioinformatics tools were used to identify hub genes, and reverse predict upstream miRNAs and lncRNA molecules of target hub genes. Finally, the total RNA-sequencing technique and miRNA microarray were combined to validate the identified genes.Results Thirty-one DEGs were screened out and the upregulated hub gene SPP1 was finally identified, which was consistent with our RNA-sequencing analysis results and validation dataset. In addition, a ceRNA network of mRNA (SPP1)-miRNA (miR-181a-5p)-lncRNA (NEAT1, MALAT1, LINC00667, NORAD, XIST and MIR4458HG) was identified by the bioinformatics databases. The results of our miRNA microarray showed that miR-181a-5p was upregulated in keloid, also we found that the lncRNA NEAT1 could affect keloid progression by retrieving the relevant literature.Conclusions We speculate that SPP1 is a potential candidate biomarker and therapeutic target for patients with keloid, and NEAT1/miR-181a-5p/SPP1 might be the RNA regulatory pathway that regulates keloid formation.

Based on the comprehensive analysis of core, thin section, logging and seismic data, this study carried out the identification and comparison of Permian Changxing Formation sequences, clarified the typical sedimentary architectures of intra-platform shoal, investigated the vertical and horizontal development and distribution of intra-platform shoal in each sequence, and thus established the sedimentary evolution model of shoal body. The study results are reflected in four aspects. First, there are two complete third-order sequences (SQ1 and SQ2) in Changxing Formation in central Sichuan Basin. SQ1 is generally thick in the north and thin in the south, and SQ2 shows a thickness differentiation trend of “two thicknesses and three thinnesses”. Second, the Changxing Formation in central Sichuan Basin mainly develops intra-platform shoal, inter-shoal sea and intra-platform depression subfacies. In the vertical direction, the intra-platform shoal mainly presents two typical sedimentary sequences: stable superposed and high-frequency interbedded. Third, the stable superimposed sedimentary sequence is developed in the shoal belt at the edge of intra-platform depression, which is composed of two shoal-forming periods and located in the highstand systems tracts (HSTs) of SQ1 and SQ2. The high-frequency interbedded sedimentary sequence is developed in the southern shoal belt of intra-platform depression, which is composed of four shoal-forming periods and mainly located in the HST of SQ2. Fourth, during the SQ1 deposition, the intra-platform shoal was mainly developed at the edge of the intra-platform depression on the north side of the study area, and the inter-shoal sea subfacies was mainly developed on the south side. During the SQ2 deposition, the intra-platform shoal was widely developed in the area, forming two nearly parallel intra-platform shoal belts. The study results provide direction and ideas for exploration of Changxing Formation intra-platform shoal reservoirs in central Sichuan Basin.

The Pressure Index of commercial banks is an effective measure of the systemic risk in the sector. This helps decision makers and market participants assess the potential levels of stress that commercial banks may face when confronted with impending risks. This study proposes a method for forecasting future trends in a Pressure Index for systemic risk prediction. The banking stress index is specifically constructed through an extreme value approach, followed by a non-stationary time series decomposition using variational mode decomposition (VMD). The number of decompositions was determined using the fuzzy entropy (FE) rule. These models were then used to construct autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), artificial neural network (ANN), backpropagation neural network (BP), recurrent neural network (RNN), and long short-term memory (LSTM) models for independent prediction. The empirical results demonstrate the significant advantages of the VMD technique for forecasting non-linear and non-stationary complex time series. These findings highlight the substantial benefits of using VMD in forecasting intricate temporal patterns, especially in cases where traditional methods may face challenges in effectively capturing underlying dynamics. The VMD-ARIMA model showed superior prediction accuracy compared with the other models. Our study aims to model and forecast the data of the banking stress index, which is of utmost importance for the central bank in formulating macroeconomic policies and for commercial banks in managing credit risk.

Microtia is a congenital deformity of the ear with an incidence of about 0.8–4.2 per 10,000 births. Total auricular reconstruction is the preferred treatment of microtia at present, and one of the core technologies is the preparation of cartilage scaffolds. Autologous costal cartilage is recognized as the best material source for constructing scaffold platforms. However, costal cartilage harvest can lead to donor-site injuries such as pneumothorax, postoperative pain, chest wall scar and deformity. Therefore, with the need of alternative to autologous cartilage, in vitro and in vivo studies of biomaterial scaffolds and cartilage tissue engineering have gradually become novel research hot points in auricular reconstruction research. Tissue-engineered cartilage possesses obvious advantages including non-rejection, minimally invasive or non-invasive, the potential of large-scale production to ensure sufficient donors and controllable morphology. Exploration and advancements of tissue-engineered cartilaginous framework are also emerging in aspects including three-dimensional biomaterial scaffolds, acquisition of seed cells and chondrocytes, 3D printing techniques, inducing factors for chondrogenesis and so on, which has greatly promoted the research process of biomaterial substitute. This review discussed the development, current application and research progress of cartilage tissue engineering in auricular reconstruction, particularly the usage and creation of biomaterial scaffolds. The development and selection of various types of seed cells and inducing factors to stimulate chondrogenic differentiation in auricular cartilage were also highlighted. There are still confronted challenges before the clinical application becomes widely available for patients, and its long-term effect remains to be evaluated. We hope to provide guidance for future research directions of biomaterials as an alternative to autologous cartilage in ear reconstruction, and finally benefit the transformation and clinical application of cartilage tissue engineering and biomaterials in microtia treatment.

Background: The treatment of microtia or acquired ear deformities by surgery is a significant challenge for plastic and ENT surgeons; one of the most difficult points is constructing the scaffold for auricular reconstruction. As a type of cell with multiple differentiation potentials, stem cells play an essential role in the construction of cartilage scaffolds, and therefore have received widespread attention in ear reconstructive research.Methods: A literature search was conducted for peer-reviewed articles between 2005 and 2023 with the following keywords: stem cells; auricular cartilage; ear cartilage; conchal cartilage; auricular reconstruction, regeneration, and reparation of chondrocytes; tissue engineering in the following databases: PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Ovid.Results: Thirty-three research articles were finally selected and their main characteristics were summarized. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs), perichondrial stem/progenitor cells (PPCs), and cartilage stem/progenitor cells (CSPCs) were mainly used in chondrocyte regeneration. Injecting the stem cells into the cartilage niche directly, co-culturing the stem cells with the auricular cartilage cells, and inducing the cells in the chondrogenic medium in vitro were the main methods that have been demonstrated in the studies. The chondrogenic ability of these cells was observed in vitro, and they also maintained good elasticity and morphology after implantation in vivo for a period of time.Conclusion: ADSC, BMMSC, PPC, and CSPC were the main stem cells that have been researched in craniofacial cartilage reconstruction, the regenerative cartilage performed highly similar to normal cartilage, and the test of AGA and type II collagen content also proved the cartilage property of the neo-cartilage. However, stem cell reconstruction of the auricle is still in the initial stage of animal experiments, transplantation with such scaffolds in large animals is still lacking, and there is still a long way to go.

Refractory skin defects such as pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, and vascular ulcers represent a challenge for clinicians and researchers in many aspects. The treatment strategies for wound healing have high cost and limited efficacy. To ease the financial and psychological burden on patients, a more effective therapeutic approach is needed to address the chronic wound. MSC-derived exosomes (MSC-exosomes), the main bioactive extracellular vesicles of the paracrine effect of MSCs, have been proposed as a new potential cell-free approach for wound healing and skin regeneration. The benefits of MSC-exosomes include their ability to promote angiogenesis and cell proliferation, increase collagen production, regulate inflammation, and finally improve tissue regenerative capacity. However, poor targeting and easy removability of MSC-exosomes from the wound are major obstacles to their use in clinical therapy. Thus, the concept of bioengineering technology has been introduced to modify exosomes, enabling higher concentrations and construction of particles of greater stability with specific therapeutic capability. The use of biomaterials to load MSC-exosomes may be a promising strategy to concentrate dose, create the desired therapeutic efficacy, and maintain a sustained release effect. The beneficial role of MSC-exosomes in wound healing is been widely accepted; however, the potential of bioengineering-modified MSC-exosomes remains unclear. In this review, we attempt to summarize the therapeutic applications of modified MSC-exosomes in wound healing and skin regeneration. The challenges and prospects of bioengineered MSC-exosomes are also discussed.

Abstract Background The BDDQ-AS (Body Dysmorphic Disorder Questionnaire—Aesthetic Surgery) is a simple and reliable patient-reported outcome measure. It can be used as a screening tool for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in patients undergoing aesthetic rhinoplasty. The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the Mandarin version of the BDDQ-AS (M-BDDQ-AS) and evaluate its selected psychometric validation in patients after rhinoplasty. Method According to international guidelines, the BDDQ-AS questionnaire was translated from English to Mandarin. Twenty Mandarin-speaking rhinoplasty patients were interviewed in order to evaluate the understandability and acceptability of the translation and produce a final version. It was then administered to 137 patients with a mean age of 38.75 ± 6.24 years. Psychometric validation were evaluated using reliability (internal consistency, test–retest reliability) and item-reponse theory (IRT) test. Result High internal consistency of 0.823 was found using Cronbach’s α coefficient. Reliability of the M-BDDQ-AS resulted in Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) = 0.863. Besides, based on IRT analysis, the discrimination abilities of all the items were good (over 2.0), and their difficulty estimates were reasonable. Conclusion The M-BDDQ-AS is a reliable and valid self-reported questionnaire that can be used in rhinoplasty patients. The very good psychometric validation of the M-BDDQ-AS indicates that it can be used in clinical practice and scientific research. Graphical Abstract

Large skin defects caused by burns, unhealing chronic wounds, and trauma, are still an intractable problem for clinicians and researchers. Ideal skin regeneration includes several intricate and dynamic stages of wound repair and regeneration of skin physiological function. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), a type of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with abundant resources and micro-invasive extraction protocols, have been reported to participate in each stage of promoting skin regeneration via paracrine effects. As essential products secreted by ADSCs, extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from ADSCs (ADSC-EVs) inherit such therapeutic potential. However, ADSC-EVs showed much more clinical superiorities than parental cells. ADSC-EVs carry various mRNAs, non-coding RNAs, proteins, and lipids to regulate the activities of recipient cells and eventually accelerate skin regeneration. The beneficial role of ADSCs in wound repair has been widely accepted, while a deep comprehension of the mechanisms of ADSC-EVs in skin regeneration remains unclear. In this review, we provided a basic profile of ADSC-EVs. Moreover, we summarized the latest mechanisms of ADSC-EVs on skin regeneration from the aspects of inflammation, angiogenesis, cell proliferation, extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, autophagy, and oxidative stress. Hair follicle regeneration and skin barrier repair stimulated by ADSC-EVs were also reviewed. The challenges and prospects of ADSC-EVs-based therapies were discussed at the end of this review.

Abstract Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a serious complication in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and renal interstitial fibrosis plays a key role in DN progression. Here, we aimed to probe into the role and potential mechanism of miR-483-5p in DN-induced renal interstitial fibrosis. In this study, we corroborated that miR-483-5p expression was lessened in type 1 and type 2 diabetic mice kidney tissues and high glucose (HG)-stimulated tubular epithelial cells (TECs), and raised in the exosomes derived from renal tissues in type 1 and type 2 diabetic mice. miR-483-5p restrained the expressions of fibrosis-related genes in vitro and renal interstitial fibrosis in vivo. Mechanistically, miR-483-5p bound both TIMP2 and MAPK1, and TIMP2 and MAPK1 were bound up with the regulation of miR-483-5p on renal TECs under HG conditions. Importantly, HNRNPA1-mediated exosomal sorting transported cellular miR-483-5p out of TECs into the urine. Our results expounded that HNRNPA1-mediated exosomal sorting transported cellular miR-483-5p out of TECs into the urine, thus lessening the restraint of cellular miR-483-5p on MAPK1 and TIMP2 mRNAs, and ultimately boosting extracellular matrix deposition and the progression of DN-induced renal interstitial fibrosis.

The prevalence of Merkel cell polyomavirus(MCPyV) in Merkel cell carcinoma(MCC) and non-MCC skin lesions and its possible role in the etiology of other skin diseases remain controversial. To systematically assess the association between MCPyV infection and MCC, non-MCC skin lesions, and normal skin. For this systematic review and meta-analysis, a comprehensive search for eligible studies was conducted using Medline Ovid, Pubmed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane CENTRAL databases until August 2021; references were searched to identify additional studies. Observational studies that investigated the association between MCPyV infection and MCC, non-MCC skin lesions, and normal skin using polymerase chain reaction(PCR) as a detection method and provided sufficient data to calculate the prevalence of MCPyV positivity. A total of 50 articles were included in the study after exclusion criteria were applied. Two reviewers independently reviewed and assessed the eligibility of the studies, and all disagreements were resolved by consensus. To determine the association between MCPyV and MCC, overall odds ratio (OR) were calculated with 95% CI using a random-effects model. Single-arm meta-analyses were performed to examine the prevalence rate of MCPyV+ in MCC, non-MCC skin lesions, and normal skin. The primary analysis was the prevalence rate of MCPyV+ in MCC. Secondary outcomes included the prevalence rate of MCPyV+ in non-MCC skin lesions and normal skin. A total of 50 studies involving 5428 patients were reviewed based on our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Compared with the control group, MCPyV infection was significantly associated with MCC (OR = 3.51, 95% CI = 2.96 - 4.05). The global prevalence of MCPyV+ in MCC, melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, Bowen’s disease, actinic keratosis, keratoacanthoma, seborrheic keratosis, and normal skin was 80%, 4%, 15%, 15%, 21%, 6%, 20%, 10%, and 11%, respectively. The current results suggest that MCPyV infection is significantly associated with an increased risk of MCC. However, the low prevalence rate of MCPyV+ in non-MCC skin lesions does not exclude a pathogenic association of this virus with the development of non-MCC skin lesions.

Abstract Background Microtia is a congenital anomaly of ear that ranges in severity from mild structural abnormalities to complete absence of the outer ears. Concha-type microtia is considered to be a mild form. The H6 family homeobox 1 transcription factor gene (HMX1) plays an important role in craniofacial structures development. Copy number variations (CNVs) of a downstream evolutionarily conserved enhancer region (ECR) of Hmx1 associated with ear and eye abnormalities have been reported in different animals, but not yet in human. To date, no genetic defects responsible for isolated human microtia has been reported except for mutations in HOXA2. Here we recruited five Chinese families with isolated bilateral concha-type microtia, and attempt to identify the underlying genetic causes. Methods Single Nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array was performed to map the disease locus and detect CNVs on a genome scale primarily in the largest family (F1). Whole genome sequencing was performed to screen all SNVs and CNVs in the candidate disease locus. Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) was then performed to detect CNVs in the other four families, F2-F5. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to validate and determine the extent of identified CNVs containing HMX1-ECR region. Precise breakpoints in F1 and F2 were identified by gap-PCR and sanger sequencing. Dual-luciferase assays were used to detect the enhancer function. qPCR assays were also used to detect HMX1-ECR CNVs in 61 patients with other types mictrotia. Results Linkage and haplotype analysis in F1 mapped the disease locus to a 1.9 Mb interval on 4p16.1 containing HMX1 and its downstream ECR region. Whole genome sequencing detected no potential pathogenic SNVs in coding regions of HMX1 or other genes within the candidate disease locus, but it detected a 94.6 Kb duplication in an intergenic region between HMX1 and CPZ. aCGH and qPCRs also revealed co-segregated duplications in intergenic region downstream of HMX1 in the other four families. The 21.8 Kb minimal overlapping region encompassing the core sequences consensus with mouse ECR of Hmx1. Luciferase assays confirmed the enhancer function in human sequences, and proved that HOXA2 could increase its enhancer activity. No CNVs were detected in HMX1-ECR regions in 61 patients with other type of microtia. Conclusion Duplications involving long range HMX1 enhancers are associated with human isolated bilateral concha-type microtia. We add to evidences in human that copy number variations in HMX1-ECR associates with ear malformations, as in other species. This study also provides an additional example of functional conserved non-coding elements (CNEs) in humans.

Abstract Background Microtia is a congenital malformation of the external ear and may occur as an isolated deformity or as part of a syndrome. Our previous study found a high correlation between microtia and thoracic deformities, thus, we propose that external ear and thorax development may be regulated by certain genes in common. Methods We performed exome sequencing on 10 families of sporadic microtia with thoracic abnormalities. We identified mutated genes under different models of inheritance, and checked them through Mouse Genome Informatics and association analysis. Results We identified 45 rare mutations, including 9 de novo mutations, 20 heterozygous mutations, 3 homozygous mutations, and 13 hemizygous mutations, of which 2 are likely to be causative. They are de novo missense variant in PHF5A and compound heterozygous mutations in CYP26B1, of which CYP26B1 mutation is highly likely pathogenic. Conclusion The results indicate that certain genes may affect both external ear and thorax development, and demonstrate the benefits of whole‐exome sequencing in identifying candidate genes of microtia. This study provides a new way for genetic exploration in microtia.

Two-dimensional material nanosheets have always been a research hotspot because of their unique structure and properties. We report mode-locked operation in ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL) for the first time by adopting Fe3O4 nanosheets as a saturable absorber (SA). The laser is capable of generating 456 ps pulses, centered around 1039 nm. Our results manifest that Fe3O4 nanosheets are expected to become a new type of saturable absorber, which can better promote the development of mode-locked lasers.

Owing to the limitation of optical fiber materials and conventional fabrication methods, the development of optical fiber devices has encountered a bottleneck. Recently, two-photon polymerization technology is attracting increasing research interest due to its superiorities of high precision, flexibility and diversity of polymer materials. The optical fiber integrated micro-/nanostructures induced by two-photon polymerization have become a research hotspot due to the great application expansion of optical fiber device. In this paper, we review the research progress in the field of optical fiber integrated micro-/nanostructures induced by two-photon polymerization in the last 10 years, which are classified by micro-optics, optical waveguide device and optical micro-cavity. Furthermore, we briefly discussed the future prospects of this exciting research field.

We demonstrate a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating with a taper induced by femtosecond laser micromachining. In this configuration, a fiber taper fabricated by an arc discharge in a fiber splicer was sandwiched between two fiber Bragg grating sections, which were formed using femtosecond laser line-by-line inscription. The degree of phase shift produced by this device can be adjusted by introducing axial strain, with a sensitivity of 4.59 pm/με. A theoretical study was also conducted by modeling the taper under axial strain. The relative deviation between simulated and measured sensitivities is less than 10%.

We report a new fiber optic sensor for temperature measurement at a temperature range of up to 900 °C with excellent stability and repeatability. The sensing head is comprised of a short hollow-core fiber segment spliced between two single-mode fibers using a commercial splicer. Optical power from the lead-in fiber is partly coupled to silica cladding of the hollow-core fiber with the remainder propagating in air core by short distance. The two beams are then re-coupled to the core of the lead-out fiber, owing to the offset splicing joint. Due to the effective index difference between the two beams, an interference pattern in the transmission spectrum is obtained. The distinct thermo-optic coefficients between silica and air result in a high-temperature sensitivity of 41 pm/ °C, and the enclosed structure ensures its immunity to the external refractive index.

In this paper, we have proposed and experimentally prepared an improved gas pressure sensing device. It is mainly constructed by a short hollow silica tube segment and a CO2-laser-induced long period grating in hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF). To effectively enhance the interaction between light in the air-core of HC-PBF and external surroundings, thus to achieve the best possible gas pressure sensitivity, a microchannel is introduced in the middle of the hollow silica tube segment with the femtosecond laser processing technique. The corresponding gas pressure experiments demonstrate that the resonant wavelength of the LPFG shows a blue shift up to −1.3 nm/MPa. Moreover, the temperature response sensitivity of this sensor is as low as 5.3 pm/°C and enable it possible as a temperature-insensitive gas pressure measure apparatus.

Plastic surgery is a broad field, including maxillofacial surgery, skin flaps and grafts, liposuction and body contouring, breast surgery, and facial cosmetic procedures. Due to the requirements of plastic surgery for the biological safety of materials, biomaterials are widely used because of its superior biocompatibility and biodegradability. Currently, there are many kinds of biomaterials clinically used in plastic surgery and their applications are diverse. Moreover, with the rise of three-dimensional printing technology in recent years, the macroscopically more precise and personalized bio-scaffolding materials with microporous structure have made good progress, which is thought to bring new development to biomaterials. Therefore, in this paper, we reviewed the plastic surgery biomaterials and current progress in their 3D manufacturing technology.

We demonstrate a high-sensitivity gas pressure sensor by use of an in-fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI) based on hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF) with a side-opened channel. The FPI was constructed by splicing a thin piece of HC-PBF between two stander single-mode fibers. Then, a side-opened channel was drilled through the hollow core of the HC-PBF by use of a femtosecond laser. Such an FPI with a side-opened channel greatly enhanced the gas pressure sensitivity up to 4.24 nm/MPa, which is two orders of magnitude higher than that of FPI with an enclosed cavity. In addition, the effects of cavity length on the gas pressure sensing performance were also studied. A shorter cavity gives rise to broader measurement range while offering larger detection limit, and vice versa. The structure size is tens of micrometers, which makes it possible to develop an ultracompact high-sensitivity gas pressure sensor.

We reported a gas pressure sensor based on CO2-laser-induced long-period fiber grating (LPFG) in an air-core photonic bandgap fiber (PBF). The LPFG was inscribed in an air-core PBF by the use of an improved CO2 laser system with an ultraprecision 2-D scanning technique, which induced periodic collapses of air holes along the axis of the PBF. Such an LPFG could be used to develop a promising gas pressure sensor with a sensitivity of -137 pm/MPa. Moreover, a simplified fiber model with a relatively similar elastic response was developed to qualitatively study the gas pressure response of the LPFG inscribed in the air-core PBF. A simulated stress distribution along the LPFG revealed that the gas pressure leads to a stress concentration at the collapsed area of the air holes in the fiber cladding, which finally results in a resonant wavelength shift of the LPFG through an elastooptical effect.

A method to structure the Jones quaternion utilizing Pauli matrices is proposed, improving the quaternion theory of polarization optics. It is proved that the Stokes quaternion is the double product of the Jones quaternion and its Hermitian transpose and that the rotation axis of the output three-adjacent-point Stokes quaternions is a mapping from the rotation axis of the three-adjacent-reflection-point Stokes quaternions in the optical fiber and that the rotation angle among the output three adjacent points is the doubleness of the rotation angle among the three adjacent reflection points in the optical fiber. The three-point quaternion method to measure birefringence distribution is proposed and implemented, the experimental result shows that the average birefringence is 0.263/m in the fiber under test, and the corresponding average beat length is 26 m. We also demonstrated the paraxial approximate quaternion Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula of exponential quaternions multiplying for cascaded optical components; then, a quaternion interpolation method to estimate the error of birefringence measurement is proposed, and the relative error calculated was less than 5%. The previously cited works indicate that the quaternion algorithm is very effective in the research of the polarization in optical fibers.

We demonstrate an ultrasensitive temperature sensor based on a unique fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI) that was created by means of splicing a mercury-filled silica tube with a single-mode fiber. The air cavity of the fiber FPI was formed by the surface of the mercury column and the endface of the single-mode fiber. Moreover, the mercury-based fiber FPI exhibits an ultrahigh temperature-sensitivity of up to -41.9 nm/°C, which is about one order of magnitude higher than that of the ordinary FPI-based fiber-tip sensors reported so far. Hence, such a mercury-based fiber FPI temperature sensor could be used for highly sensitive ambient temperature sensing applications.

Abstract Background A lack of force feedback in laparoscopic surgery often leads to a steep learning curve to the novices and traditional training system equipped with force feedback need a high educational cost. This study aimed to use a laparoscopic grasper providing force feedback in laparoscopic training which can assist in controlling of gripping forces and improve the learning processing of the novices. Methods Firstly, we conducted a pre-experiment to verify the role of force feedback in gripping operations and establish the safe gripping force threshold for the tasks. Following this, we proceeded with a four-week training program. Unlike the novices without feedback (Group A2), the novices receiving feedback (Group B2) underwent training that included force feedback. Finally, we completed a follow-up period without providing force feedback to assess the training effect under different conditions. Real-time force parameters were recorded and compared. Results In the pre-experiment, we set the gripping force threshold for the tasks based on the experienced surgeons’ performance. This is reasonable as the experienced surgeons have obtained adequate skill of handling grasper. The thresholds for task 1, 2, and 3 were set as 0.731 N, 1.203 N and 0.938 N, respectively.
