Search

Research on microwave signal measurement techniques is risen, driven by the expanding urgent demands of wireless communication, global positioning systems, remote sensing and 6G networks. In stark contrast with traditional electronic-based realization, the implementations of microwave signal measurement systems based on integrated compact photonic chip have exhibited distinct advantages in high operation bandwidth, light weight, and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, although numerous integrated microwave photonic signal measurement systems have been reported, measurement bandwidth of the majority of them is still below 30 GHz due to the bandwidth limitation of electro-optical modulators (EOMs). Furthermore, previous studies often are more focused on the measurement of one single parameter (typically the frequency) of microwave signals, which has hindered their practical application in complex situations. Here, an integrated photonic microwave multi-parameter measurement system composed of microwave frequency measurement module and microwave phase amplitude measurement module based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform is reported. Utilizing this system, not only the ultra-high bandwidth (up to 60GHz) of microwave frequency, phase and amplitude measurement with low root-mean-squares errors (450MHz, 3.43{\deg} and 1.64% of the measurement for frequency, phase and amplitude, respectively), but also the time-domain reconstruction of sinusoidal microwave signals is achieved. Changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei (CL AGN) exhibit drastic variations in broad emission lines (BELs), the mechanism of which remains unclear. Expanding the sample of CL AGN is helpful to reveal the mechanism. This study aims to identify more CL AGNs by cross-matching spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Our approach to identify CL AGN candidates is based on the automatic spectral fitting, followed by detailed visual inspections. Through this method, we present a sample of 88 CL AGNs, in which 77 sources being newly discovered. Within this sample, 59 CL AGNs primarily show the variability of the H$\beta$ line, 22 exhibit changes in both the H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ lines, and 7 mainly display variations in the H$\alpha$ line. Our findings reveal that the sequence of appearance and disappearance of the BELs aligns with the known CL sequence. We estimate the black hole mass and Eddington ratio for these CL AGNs, which range from $2.5\times 10^6$ to $8.0\times 10^8 M_\odot$ and from 0.001 to 0.13, respectively. The Eddington ratio is lower than that of most typical AGNs, and is consistent with the results of previous studies on CL AGN. Sonomyography (SMG) is a novel human-machine interface that controls upper-limb prostheses by monitoring forearm muscle activity using ultrasonic imaging. SMG has been investigated for controlling upper-limb prostheses during the last two decades. The results show that this method, in combination with artificial intelligence, can classify different hand gestures with an accuracy of more than 90%, making it a great alternative control system compared to electromyography (EMG). However, up to now there are few reports of a system integrating SMG together with a prosthesis for testing on amputee subjects to demonstrate its capability in relation to daily activities. In this study, we developed ProRuka, a novel low-cost 6-degree-of-freedom prosthetic hand integrated with the control provided by a SMG system with a wearable ultrasound imaging probe. The classification of hand gestures using different machine learning classification/regression algorithms including KNN, nearest neighbor regression, random forest, decision tree classifier, decision tree regression, support vector regression and support vector machine in combination with a transfer learning model (VGG16) was first evaluated off-line to determine its reliability and precision. Additionally, the developed controlling system were evaluated on two amputees, in real-time experiments using a variety of hand function test kits. The results from an off-line study including ten healthy participants indicated that nine different hand motions can be classified with a success rate of 100%. In addition, the hand function test in real time (using 4 different hand gestures) confirmed that the designed prosthesis with the SMG controlling system can assist amputees to perform a variety of hand movements needed in daily activities.

We report on the first measurement of the elemental fragmentation cross sections (EFCSs) of $^{29-33}\mathrm{Si}$ on a carbon target at $\sim$230~MeV/nucleon. The experimental data covering charge changes of $\Delta Z$ = 1-4 are reproduced well by the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) coupled with the evaporation GEMINI (IQMD+GEMINI) model. We further explore the mechanisms underlying the single-proton removal reaction in this model framework. We conclude that the cross sections from direct proton knockout exhibit a overall weak dependence on the mass number of $\mathrm{Si}$ projectiles. The proton evaporation induced after the projectile excitation significantly affects the cross sections for neutron-deficient $\mathrm{Si}$ isotopes, while neutron evaporation plays a crucial role in the reactions of neutron-rich $\mathrm{Si}$ isotopes. The current clinical gold standard for evaluating adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is X-ray radiography, using Cobb angle measurement. However, the frequent monitoring of the AIS progression using X-rays poses a challenge due to the cumulative radiation exposure. Although 3D ultrasound has been validated as a reliable and radiation-free alternative for scoliosis assessment, the process of measuring spinal curvature is still carried out manually. Consequently, there is a considerable demand for a fully automatic system that can locate bony landmarks and perform angle measurements. To this end, we introduce an estimation model for automatic ultrasound curve angle (UCA) measurement. The model employs a dual-branch network to detect candidate landmarks and perform vertebra segmentation on ultrasound coronal images. An affinity clustering strategy is utilized within the vertebral segmentation area to illustrate the affinity relationship between candidate landmarks. Subsequently, we can efficiently perform line delineation from a clustered affinity map for UCA measurement. As our method is specifically designed for UCA calculation, this method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods for landmark and line detection tasks. The high correlation between the automatic UCA and Cobb angle (R$^2$=0.858) suggests that our proposed method can potentially replace manual UCA measurement in ultrasound scoliosis assessment.

The similar densities of dark matter and baryons in the universe imply that they might arise from the same ultraviolet model. The B-Mesogenesis, which assumes dark matter is charged under the baryon number, attempts to simultaneously explain the origin of baryon asymmetry and dark matter in the universe. In particular, the B-Mesogenesis might induce bottom-baryon decays into invisible or semi-invisible final states, which provide a distinctive signal for probing this scenario. In this work, we systematically study the invisible decays of bottom baryons into dark matters, and semi-invisible decays of bottom baryons into a meson or a photon together with a dark matter particle. In particular, the fully invisible decay can explore the stable particles in B-Mesogenesis. Some QCD-based frameworks are used to calculate the hadronic matrix elements under the B-Mesogenesis model. We estimate the constraints on the Wilson coefficients or the product of some new physics couplings with the Wilson coefficients by the semi-invisible and invisible decays of bottom baryons at future colliders., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) has achieved tremendous success in the field of Natural Language Processing owing to diverse training paradigms that empower LLMs to effectively capture intricate linguistic patterns and semantic representations. In particular, the recent "pre-train, prompt and predict" training paradigm has attracted significant attention as an approach for learning generalizable models with limited labeled data. In line with this advancement, these training paradigms have recently been adapted to the recommendation domain and are seen as a promising direction in both academia and industry. This half-day tutorial aims to provide a thorough understanding of extracting and transferring knowledge from pre-trained models learned through different training paradigms to improve recommender systems from various perspectives, such as generality, sparsity, effectiveness and trustworthiness. In this tutorial, we first introduce the basic concepts and a generic architecture of the language modeling paradigm for recommendation purposes. Then, we focus on recent advancements in adapting LLM-related training strategies and optimization objectives for different recommendation tasks. After that, we will systematically introduce ethical issues in LLM-based recommender systems and discuss possible approaches to assessing and mitigating them. We will also summarize the relevant datasets, evaluation metrics, and an empirical study on the recommendation performance of training paradigms. We present a sample of 305 QSO candidates having $|b| < 30^{\circ}$, the majority with GALEX magnitudes NUV < 18.75. To generate this sample, we apply UV-IR color selection criteria to photometric data from the Ultraviolet GAlactic Plane Survey (UVGAPS) as part of GALEX-CAUSE, the Million Quasars Catalog, Gaia DR2, and Pan-STARRS DR1. 165 of these 305 candidate UV-bright AGN (54%) have published spectroscopic redshifts from 45 different surveys, confirming them as AGN. We further obtained low-dispersion, optical, longslit spectra with the APO 3.5-m, MDM 2.4-m, and MDM 1.3-m telescopes for 84 of the candidates, and confirm 86% (N = 72) as AGN, generally with z < 0.6. These sources fill a gap in the Galactic latitude coverage of the available samples of known UV-bright QSO background probes. Along with a description of the confirmed QSO properties, we provide the fully-reduced, flux and wavelength-calibrated spectra of 84 low-latitude QSOs through the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes. We report on an experimental simulation of the spin-1 Heisenberg model with composite bosons in a one-dimensional chain based on the two-component Bose-Hubbard model. Exploiting our site-and spin-resolved quantum gas microscope, we observed faster superexchange dynamics of the spin-1 system compared to its spin-1/2 counterpart, which is attributed to the enhancement effect of multi-bosons. We further probed the non-equilibrium spin dynamics driven by the superexchange and single-ion anisotropy terms, unveiling the linear expansion of the spin-spin correlations, which is limited by the Lieb-Robinson bound. Based on the superexchange process, we prepared and verified the entangled qutrits pairs with these composite spin-1 bosons, potentially being applied in qutrit-based quantum information processing.

The counterflow superfluidity (CSF) was predicted two decades ago. Counterintuitively, while both components in the CSF have fluidity, their correlated counterflow currents cancel out leading the overall system to an incompressible Mott insulator. However, realizing and identifying the CSF remain challenging due to the request on extreme experimental capabilities in a single setup. Here, we observe the CSF in a binary Bose mixture in optical lattices. We prepare a low-entropy spin-Mott state by conveying and merging two spin-1/2 bosonic atoms at every site and drive it adiabatically to the CSF at $\sim$ 1 nK. Antipair correlations of the CSF are probed though a site- and spin-resolved quantum gas microscope in both real and momentum spaces. Changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are a special class of AGNs that change their spectral type from type 1 to type 2 or vice versa. In recent years, a number of changing-look blazars (CLBs) were also reported, which transition between flat-spectrum radio quasars and BL Lacs. The physical properties of CLBs are still unclear. Using the $mclust$ R package for Gaussian Mixture Modeling, we performed a clustering analysis for a sample of 105 CLBs selected from the literature. Three kinds of analysis found that CLBs lie in between the parameter distributions of FSRQs and BL Lacs: (i) univariate analysis; (ii) bivariate analysis; and (iii) multivariate analysis, carried out with a dimension reduction approach of the physical properties of the three types of blazars. Our results suggest that CLBs belong to a transition type between FSRQs and BL Lacs, which may be regulated by the change of accretion process and may be similar to other changing-look AGNs., Comment: Published in ApJ. 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The cycling of metals between interstellar gas and dust is a critical aspect of the baryon cycle of galaxies, yet our understanding of this process is limited. This study focuses on understanding dust depletion effects in the low metallicity regime (< 20% Zo) typical of cosmic noon. Using medium-resolution UV spectroscopy from the COS onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, gas-phase abundances and depletions of iron and sulfur were derived toward 18 sightlines in local dwarf galaxies IC 1613 and Sextans A. The results show that the depletion of Fe and S is consistent with that found in the Milky Way, LMC and SMC. The depletion level of Fe increases with gas column density, indicating dust growth in the interstellar medium (ISM). The level of Fe depletion decreases with decreasing metallicity, resulting in the fraction of iron in gas ranging from 3% in the MW to 9% in IC 1613 and ~19% in Sextans A. The dust-to-gas and dust-to-metal ratios (D/G, D/M) for these dwarf galaxies were estimated based on the MW relations between the depletion of Fe and other elements. The study finds that D/G decreases only slightly sub-linearly with metallicity, with D/M decreasing from 0.41 +/- 0.05 in the MW to 0.11 +/- 0.11 at 0.10 Zo (at log N(H) = 21 cm-2). The trend of D/G vs. metallicity using depletion in local systems is similar to that inferred in Damped Ly-alpha systems from abundance ratios but lies higher than the trend inferred from FIR measurements in nearby galaxies.

Photonic neural networks (PNNs) have emerged as a promising platform to address the energy consumption issue that comes with the advancement of artificial intelligence technology, and thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) offers an attractive solution as a material platform mainly for its combined characteristics of low optical loss and large electro-optic (EO) coefficients. Here, we present the first implementation of an EO tunable PNN based on the TFLN platform. Our device features ultra-high fidelity, high computation speed, and exceptional power efficiency. We benchmark the performance of our device with several deep learning missions including in-situ training of Circle and Moons nonlinear datasets classification, Iris flower species recognition, and handwriting digits recognition. We present a new technique to identify associations of HI emission in the Magellanic Stream (MS) and ultraviolet (UV) absorbers from 92 QSO sight lines near the MS. We quantify the level of associations of individual HI elements to the main HI body of the Stream using Wasserstein distance-based models, and derive characteristic spatial and kinematic distances of the HI emission in the MS. With the emission-based model, we further develop a comparison metric, which identifies the dominant associations of individual UV absorbers with respective to the MS and nearby galaxies. For ionized gas associated with the MS probed by CII, CIV, SiII, SiIII, SiIV, we find that the ion column densities are generally $\sim$0.5 dex higher than those that are not associated, and that the gas is more ionized toward the tail of the MS as indicated by the spatial trend of the CII/CIV ratios. For nearby galaxies, we identify potential new absorbers associated with the CGM of M33 and NGC300, and affirm the associations of absorbers with IC1613 and WLM. For M31, we find the previously identified gradient in column densities as a function of impact parameter, and that absorbers with higher column densities beyond M31's virial radius are more likely to be associated with the MS. Our analysis of absorbers associated with the Magellanic Clouds reveals the presence of continuous and blended diffuse ionized gas between the Stream and the Clouds. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is home to many HII regions, which may lead to significant outflows. We examine the LMC's multiphase gas ($T\sim10^{4-5}$ K) in HI, SII, SiIV, and CIV using 110 stellar sight lines from the HST's Ultraviolet Legacy Library of Young Stars as Essential Standards (ULLYSES) program. We develop a continuum fitting algorithm based on the concept of Gaussian Process regression and identify reliable LMC interstellar absorption over $v_{\rm helio}=175-375$ km s$^{-1}$. Our analyses show disk-wide ionized outflows in SiIV and CIV across the LMC with bulk velocities of $|v_{\rm out, bulk}|\sim20-60$ km s$^{-1}$, which indicates that most of the outflowing mass is gravitationally bound. The outflows' column densities correlate with the LMC's star formation rate surface densities ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$), and the outflows with higher $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ tend to be more ionized. Considering outflows from both sides of the LMC as traced by CIV, we conservatively estimate a total outflow rate of $\dot{M}_{\rm out}\gtrsim 0.03~M_\odot {\rm yr}^{-1}$ and a mass loading factor of $\eta\gtrsim 0.15$. We compare the LMC's outflows with those detected in starburst galaxies and simulation predictions, and find a universal scaling relation of $|v_{\rm out, bulk}|\propto \Sigma_{\rm SFR}^{0.23}$ over a wide range of star-forming conditions ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}\sim10^{-4.5}-10^{2}~M_\odot {\rm yr}^{-1} {\rm kpc}^{-2}$). Lastly, we find that the outflows are co-rotating with the LMC's young stellar disk and the velocity field does not seem to be significantly impacted by external forces; we thus speculate on the existence of a bow shock leading the LMC, which may have shielded the outflows from ram pressure as the LMC orbits the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Achieving spatiotemporal control of light at high-speeds presents immense possibilities for various applications in communication, computation, metrology, and sensing. The integration of subwavelength metasurfaces and optical waveguides offers a promising approach to manipulate light across multiple degrees of freedom at high-speed in compact photonic integrated circuit (PICs) devices. Here, we demonstrate a gigahertz-rate-switchable wavefront shaping by integrating metasurface, lithium niobite on insulator (LNOI) photonic waveguide and electrodes within a PIC device. As proofs of concept, we showcase the generation of a focus beam with reconfigurable arbitrary polarizations, switchable focusing with lateral focal positions and focal length, orbital angular momentum light beams (OAMs) as well as Bessel beams. Our measurements indicate modulation speeds of up to gigahertz rate. This integrated platform offers a versatile and efficient means of controlling light field at high-speed within a compact system, paving the way for potential applications in optical communication, computation, sensing, and imaging.

The interaction between the supersonic motion of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM) is expected to result in a bow shock that leads the LMC's gaseous disk. In this letter, we use hydrodynamic simulations of the LMC's recent infall to predict the extent of this shock and its effect on the Milky Way's (MW) CGM. The simulations clearly predict the existence of an asymmetric shock with a present day stand-off radius of $\sim6.7$ kpc and a transverse diameter of $\sim30$ kpc. Over the past 500 Myr, $\sim8\%$ of the MW's CGM in the southern hemisphere should have interacted with the shock front. This interaction may have had the effect of smoothing over inhomogeneities and increasing mixing in the MW CGM. We find observational evidence of the existence of the bow shock in recent $H\alpha$ maps of the LMC, providing a potential explanation for the envelope of ionized gas surrounding the LMC. Furthermore, the interaction of the bow shock with the MW CGM may also explain observations of ionized gas surrounding the Magellanic Stream. Using recent orbital histories of MW satellites, we find that many satellites have likely interacted with the LMC shock. Additionally, the dwarf galaxy Ret2 is currently sitting inside the shock, which may impact the interpretation of reported gamma ray excess in Ret2. An equivalent width (EW) based classification may cause the erroneous judgement to the flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lacerate objects (BL Lac) due to the diluting the line features by dramatic variations in the jet continuum flux. To help address the issue, the present paper explore the possible intrinsic classification on the bias of a random forest supervised machine learning algorithm. In order to do so, we compile a sample of 1680 Fermi blazars that have both gamma-rays and radio-frequencies data available from the 4LAC-DR2 catalog, which includes 1352 training and validation samples and 328 forecast samples. By studying the results for all of the different combinations of 23 characteristic parameters, we found that there are 178 optimal parameters combinations (OPCs) with the highest accuracy ($\simeq$ 98.89\%). Using the combined classification results from the nine combinations of these OPCs to the 328 forecast samples, we predict that there are 113 true BL Lacs (TBLs) and 157 false BL Lacs (FBLs) that are possible intrinsically FSRQs misclassified as BL Lacs. The FBLs show a clear separation from TBLs and FSRQs in the $\gamma$-ray photon spectral index, $\Gamma_{\rm ph}$, and X-band radio flux, ${\rm log}{F_{R}}$, plot. Phenomenally, existence a BL Lac to FSRQ (B-to-F) transition zone is suggested, where the FBLs are in the stage of transition from BL Lacs to FSRQs. Comparing the LSP Changing-Look Blazars (CLBs) reported in the literatures, the majority of LSP CLBs are located at the B-to-F zone. ChatGPT, an implementation and application of large language models, has gained significant popularity since its initial release. Researchers have been exploring ways to harness the practical benefits of ChatGPT in real-world scenarios. Educational researchers have investigated its potential in various subjects, e.g., programming, mathematics, finance, clinical decision support, etc. However, there has been limited attention given to its application in data science education. This paper aims to bridge that gap by utilizing ChatGPT in a data science course, gathering perspectives from students, and presenting our experiences and feedback on using ChatGPT for teaching and learning in data science education. The findings not only distinguish data science education from other disciplines but also uncover new opportunities and challenges associated with incorporating ChatGPT into the data science curriculum.

Charge-changing cross section ($\sigma_{\text{cc}}$) measurements via the transmission method have made important progress recently aiming to determine the charge radii of exotic nuclei. In this work, we report a new $\sigma_{\text{cc}}$ measurement of 304(9) MeV/nucleon $^{28}$Si on carbon at the second Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou (RIBLL2) and describe the data analysis procedure in detail. This procedure is essential to evaluate the systematic uncertainty in the transmission method. The determined $\sigma_{\mathrm{cc}}$ of 1125(11) mb is found to be consistent with the existing data at similar energies. The topological $\theta$-angle is central to the understanding of a plethora of phenomena in condensed matter and high-energy physics such as the strong CP problem, dynamical quantum topological phase transitions, and the confinement--deconfinement transition. Difficulties arise when probing the effects of the topological $\theta$-angle using classical methods, in particular through the appearance of a sign problem in numerical simulations. Quantum simulators offer a powerful alternate venue for realizing the $\theta$-angle, which has hitherto remained an outstanding challenge due to the difficulty of introducing a dynamical electric field in the experiment. Here, we report on the experimental realization of a tunable topological $\theta$-angle in a Bose--Hubbard gauge-theory quantum simulator, implemented through a tilted superlattice potential that induces an effective background electric field. We demonstrate the rich physics due to this angle by the direct observation of the confinement--deconfinement transition of $(1+1)$-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. Using an atomic-precision quantum gas microscope, we distinguish between the confined and deconfined phases by monitoring the real-time evolution of particle--antiparticle pairs, which exhibit constrained (ballistic) propagation for a finite (vanishing) deviation of the $\theta$-angle from $\pi$. Multi-criteria recommender systems can improve the quality of recommendations by considering user preferences on multiple criteria. One promising approach proposed recently is multi-criteria ranking, which uses Pareto ranking to assign a ranking score based on the dominance relationship between predicted ratings across criteria. However, applying Pareto ranking to all criteria may result in non-differentiable ranking scores. To alleviate this issue, we proposed a hybrid multi-criteria ranking method by using subsorting. More specifically, we utilize one ranking method as the major sorting approach, while we apply another preference ordering method as subsorting. Our experimental results on the OpenTable and Yahoo!Movies data present the advantages of this hybrid ranking approach. In addition, the experiments also reveal more insights about the sustainability of the multi-criteria ranking for top-N item recommendations.

Programmable photonic circuits performing universal linear-optical transformations underpin vital functions in photonic quantum information processing, quantum-enhanced sensor networks, machine learning and many other intriguing applications. Recent advances in photonic integrated circuits facilitate monolithic integration of externally controlled Mach-Zehnder interferometers which can implement arbitrary unitary transformation on a large number of input/output modes. In this work, we demonstrate a 4x4 programmable linear photonic circuit on lithium niobate on insulator platform employing fast, power-efficient and low-loss electro-optical phase shifters, showing enormous advantages in terms of configuration rate and power consumption. Our device is capable of fast switching with 500 ps rise time and 1.7 ns fall time, and possesses a total on-chip power dissipation of only 0.015 mW when operated at 1 MHz modulation, and an insertion loss of 0.15 dB for each modulator and an on-chip extinction ratio of -34 dB for both cross and bar routes.
