24. Efficient Hydrogen Production from Methanol Using a Single-Site Pt1/CeO2 Catalyst

Abstract

Hydrogen is regarded as an attractive alternative energy carrier due to its high gravimetric energy density and only water production upon combustion. However, due to its low volumetric energy density, there are still some challenges in practical hydrogen storage and transportation. In the past decade, using chemical bonds of liquid organic molecules as hydrogen carriers to generate hydrogen in situ provided a feasible method to potentially solve this problem. Research efforts on liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) seek practical carrier systems and advanced catalytic materials that have the potential to reduce costs, increase reaction rate, and provide a more efficient catalytic hydrogen generation/storage process. In this work, we used methanol as a hydrogen carrier to release hydrogen in situ with the single-site Pt1/CeO2 catalyst. Moreover, in this reaction, compared with traditional nanoparticle catalysts, the single site catalyst displays excellent hydrogen generation efficiency, 40 times higher than 2.5 nm Pt/CeO2 sample, and 800 times higher compared to 7.0 nm Pt/CeO2 sample. This in-depth study highlights the benefits of single-site catalysts and paves the way for further rational design of highly efficient catalysts for sustainable energy storage applications.

Abstract

Hole transport materials (HTMs) are essential for improving the stability and efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this study, we have designed and synthesized a novel organic small molecule HTM, cor‐(DPA)5, characterized by a bowl‐shaped core with symmetric five diphenylamine groups. Compared to already‐known HTMs, the bowl‐shaped and relatively compact structure of cor‐(DPA)5 facilitates intermolecular π–π interactions, promotes film formations, and enhances charge transport. Consequently, the cor‐[DPA(2)]5 HTM exhibits high charge mobility, exceptional hydrophobicity, and a significantly elevated glass transition temperature. Superior to previously reported HTMs such as spiro‐OMeTAD and cor‐OMePTPA, our newly synthesized cor‐(DPA)5 HTM is free from any ionic dopants. As a result, the dopant‐free cor‐[DPA(2)]5‐based PSC demonstrates an impressive efficiency of 24.01 %, and exhibits outstanding operational stability. It retains 96 % after continuous exposure to 1 sun irradiation for 800 hours under MPP (maximum power point) tracking in ambient air. These findings present a structurally compact novel HTM and exemplify a new approach to the molecular design of HTM for the development of stable and effective PSCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

42. LnIII/CuIBimetallic Nanoclusters with Enhanced NIR-II Luminescence

Abstract

Coinage-metal clusters with excellent luminescence properties have attracted considerable interest due to their intriguing structures and potential applications. However, achieving strong near-infrared (NIR) luminescence in these clusters is highly challenging. Here, we have successfully synthesized the first LnIII/CuIbimetallic clusters, formulated as [LnCu54O6Cl3(2-MeO-PhC≡C)36] (ClO4)6(Ln = Yb for YbCu54, Er for ErCu54, and Gd for GdCu54). Single crystal X-ray diffraction showed that the LnCu54clusters have a three-layered core–shell structure, consisting of (LnO6)@Cu18Cl3@Cu36units protected by 36 2-MeO-PhC≡C–ligands. Notably, the YbCu54cluster exhibits significant NIR-II luminescence at 986 nm with the solid quantum efficiency of 33.3%, the highest among Cu clusters with NIR-II emission. This work not only reports the first category of LnIII/CuIclusters but also presents a method to enhance NIR luminescence in coinage-metal clusters through the incorporation of LnIIIions.
