Compared to classical optical coherence theory based on Maxwell's electromagnetic theory and Glauber's quantum optical coherence theory based on matrix mechanics formulation of quantum mechanics, quantum optical coherence theory based on Feynman's path integral formulation of quantum mechanics provides a novel tool to study optical coherence. It has the advantage of understanding the connection between mathematical calculations and physical interpretations better. Quantum optical coherence theory based on Feynman's path integral is introduced and reviewed in this paper. Based on the results of transient first-order interference of two independent light beams, it is predicted that the classical model for electric field of thermal light introduced by classical optical textbooks may not be accurate. The physics of two-photon bunching of thermal light and Hong-Ou-Mandel dip of entangled photon pairs is the same, which can be interpreted by constructive and destructive two-photon interference, respectively. Remote heart rate measurement is an increasingly concerned research field, usually using remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) to collect heart rate information through video data collection. However, in certain specific scenarios (such as low light conditions, intense lighting, and non-line-of-sight situations), traditional imaging methods fail to capture image information effectively, that may lead to difficulty or inability in measuring heart rate. To address these limitations, this study proposes using ghost imaging as a substitute for traditional imaging in the aforementioned scenarios. Optical phased arrays (OPA) with high integration, fast speed, low power consumption, and high steering resolution are critical components in the emerging photonic integrated circuit (PIC), LiDAR, free space optical communication, 3D printing, and so on. According to the OPA working principle, its function is generally achieved by independently controlling the phase of the array elements. In practice, this presents a major challenge to overcome critical trade-offs of the element numbers, the control electronics, and the power consumption. Here, we give an alternative OPA solution to overcome this technical limitation, in the form of a cascaded periodically poled electro-optical crystal structure. Compared with the existing OPA scheme, only one control electronics is used to control the entire array elements in the current proposal, regardless of the number of array elements, implying higher integration and lower power consumption. With the help of the fast response properties of electro-optic crystal materials, a high-speed and high-resolution beam steering device is demonstrated. Simulating results show that the angular resolution can be improved by several orders of magnitude when the number of the cascaded-layer increases. An OPA prototype of a 6-layer cascaded periodically poled LiNbO$_3$ (cascaded-PPLN) was designed, fabricated, and characterized. The experiment that observed beam deflection in cascaded-PPLN OPA agrees well with the simulation results. Meantime, by demonstrating dynamic beam steering continually, its capability of continuous scanning and continually active phase tunability has been verified. Therefore, this cascaded periodically poled electro-optical crystal OPA offers a feasible direction of miniaturization and low power consumption for the optical system, such as the PIC system.

Due to the complex of mixed spectral point spread function within memory effect range, it is unreliable and slow to use speckle correlation technology for non-invasive imaging through scattering medium under broadband illumination. The contrast of the speckles will drastically drop as the light source's spectrum width increases. Here, we propose a method for producing the optical transfer function with several speckle frames within memory effect range to image under broadband illumination. The method can be applied to image amplitude and color objects under white LED illumination. Compared to other approaches of imaging under broadband illumination, such as deep learning and modified phase retrieval, our method can provide more stable results with faster convergence speed, which can be applied in high speed scattering imaging under natural light illumination.

A new type of polarization sensitive interferometer is proposed, which is named as Delta interferometer due to the geometry of the simplest interferometer looks like Greek letter, Delta. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that this type of interferometer is proposed. The main difference between Delta interferometer and other existed interferometer, such as Michelson interferometer, Mach-Zehnder interferometer, Young\rq{}s double-slit interferometer, is that the two interfering paths are asymmetrical in Delta interferometer, which makes it polarization sensitive. The visibility of the first-order interference pattern observed in Delta interferometer is dependent on the polarization of the incidental light. Optical coherence theory is employed to interpret the phenomenon and a single-mode continuous-wave laser is employed to verify the theoretical predictions. The theoretical and experimental results are consistent. Delta interferometer provides a perfect tool to study the reflection of electric field in different polarizations and may find applications in polarization sensitive scenarios.

Stronger light intensity fluctuations are pursued by related applications such as optical resolution, image enhancement, and beam positioning. In this paper, an Nth-order light intensity fluctuation amplifier is proposed, which was demonstrated by a four-wave mixing process with different statistical distribution coupling lights. Firstly, its amplification mechanism is revealed both theoretically and experimentally. The ratio $R$ of statistical distributions and the degree of second-order coherence ${g^{(2)}}(0)$ of beams are used to characterize the affected modulations and the increased light intensity fluctuations through the four-wave mixing process. The results show that the amplification of light intensity fluctuations is caused by not only the fluctuating light fields of incident coupling beams, but also the fluctuating nonlinear coefficient of interaction. At last, we highlight the potentiality of applying such amplifier to other N-order nonlinear optical effects.

Benefit from the promising features of second-order correlation, ghost imaging (GI) has received extensive attentions in recent years. Simultaneously, GI is affected by the poor trade-off between sampling rate and imaging quality. The traditional image reconstruction method in GI is to accumulate the action result of each speckle and the corresponding bucket signal. We found that the image reconstruction process of GI is very similar to the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), which is one of the deep learning algorithm. In this paper, we proposed a novel method that effectively implements GI on the RNN architecture, called GI-RNN. The state of each layer in RNN is determined by the output of the previous layer and the input of this layer, and the output of the network is the sum of all previous states. Therefore, we take the speckle of each illumination and the corresponding bucket signal as the input of each layer, and the output of the network is the sum of all previous speckle and bucket signal, which is the image of the target. The testing results show that the proposed method can achieve image reconstruction at a very low sampling rate (0.38$\%$). Moreover, we compare GI-RNN with traditional GI algorithm and compressed sensing algorithm. The results of different targets show that GI-RNN is 6.61 dB higher than compressed sensing algorithm and 12.58 dB higher than traditional GI algorithm on average. In our view, the proposed method makes an important step to applications of GI.

Differing from the traditional method of achieving subwavelength interference, we have demonstrated the two-photon subwavelength interference effect of broadband chaotic light in a polarization-selective Michelson interferometer with an ultrafast two-photon absorption detector the first time, which is achieved by manipulating two-photon probability amplitudes involved in the interference. In theory, the two-photon polarization coherence matrix and probability amplitudes matrix are combined to develop polarized two-photon interference terms, which explains the experimental results well. In order to make better use of this interferometer to produce the subwavelength effect, we also make a series of error analyses to find out the relationship between the visibility and the degree of polarization error. Our experimental and theoretical results are helpful to understand the two-photon subwavelength interference, which sheds light on the development of the two-photon interference theory of vector light field based on quantum mechanics. Superbunching pseudothermal light has important applications in studying the second- and higher-order interference of light in quantum optics. Unlike the photon statistics of thermal or pseudothermal light is well understood, the photon statistics of superbunching pseudothermal light has not been studied yet. In this paper, we will employ single-photon detectors to measure the photon statistics of superbunching pseudothermal light and calculate the degree of second-order coherence. It is found that the larger the value of the degree of second-order coherence of superbunching pseudothermal light is, the more the measured photon distribution deviates from the one of thermal or pseudothermal light in the tail part. The results are helpful to understand the physics of two-photon superbunching with classical light. Ghost imaging (GI) has been paid attention gradually because of its lens-less imaging capability, turbulence-free imaging and high detection sensitivity. However, low image quality and slow imaging speed restrict the application process of GI. In this paper, we propose a improved GI method based on Denoising Convolutional Neural Networks (DnCNN). Inspired by the corresponding between input (noisy image) and output (residual image) in DnCNN, we construct the mapping between speckles sequence and the corresponding noise distribution in GI through training. Then, the same speckles sequence is employed to illuminate unknown targets, and a de-noising target image will be obtained. The proposed method can be regarded as a general method for GI. Under two sampling rates, extensive experiments are carried out to compare with traditional GI method (basic correlation and compressed sensing) and DnCNN method on three data sets. Moreover, we set up a physical GI experiment system to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method achieves promising performance.

By modulating the intensity of laser light before the rotating groundglass, the well-known pseudothermal light source can be modified into superbunching pseudothermal light source, in which the degree of second-order coherence of the scattered light is larger than 2. With the modulated intensities following binary distribution, we experimentally observed the degree of second- and third-order coherence equaling 20.45 and 227.07, which is much larger than the value of thermal or pseudothermal light, 2 and 6, respectively. Numerical simulation predicts that the degree of second-order coherence can be further improved by tuning the parameters of binary distribution. It is also predicted that the quality of temporal ghost imaging can be improved with this superbunching pseudothermal light. This simple and efficient superbunching pseudothermal light source provides an interesting alternative to study the second- and higher-order interference of light in these scenarios where thermal or pseudothermal light source were employed., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

As a promising lensless imaging method for distance objects, intensity interferometry imaging (III) had been suffering from the unreliable phase retrieval process, hindering the development of III for decades. Recently, the introduction of the ptychographic detection in III overcame this challenge, and a method called ptychographic III (PIII) was proposed. We here experimentally demonstrate that PIII can image a dynamic distance object. A reasonable image for the moving object can be retrieved with only two speckle patterns for each probe, and only 10 to 20 iterations are needed. Meanwhile, PIII exhibits robust to the inaccurate information of the probe. Furthermore, PIII successfully recovers the image through a fog obfuscating the imaging light path, under which a conventional camera relying on lenses fails to provide a recognizable image.

In general, the typical approach to discriminate antibunching, bunching or superbunching categories make use of calculating the second-order coherence function ${g^{(2)}}(\tau )$ of light. Although the classical light sources correspond to the specific degree of second-order coherence ${g^{(2)}}(0)$, it does not alone constitute a distinguishable metric to characterize and determine light sources. Here we propose a new mechanism to directly classify and generate antibunching, bunching or superbunching categories of light, as well as the classical light sources such as thermal and coherent light, by Gamma fitting according to only one characteristic parameter $\alpha$ or $\beta$. Experimental verification of beams from four-wave mixing process is in agreement with the presented mechanism, and the in fluence of temperature $T$ and laser detuning $\Delta$ on the measured results are investigated. The proposal demonstrates the potential of classifying and identifying light with different nature, and the most importantly, provides a convenient and simple method to generate light sources meeting various application requirements according to the presented rules. It is challenging for observing superbunching effect with true chaotic light, here we propose and demonstrate a method to achieve superbunching effect of the degree of second-order coherence is 2.42 with broadband stationary chaotic light based on a cascaded Michelson interferometer (CMI), exceeding the theoretical upper limit of 2 for the two-photon bunching effect of chaotic light. The superbunching correlation peak is measured with an ultrafast two-photon absorption detector which the full width at half maximum reaches about 95 fs. Two-photon superbunching theory in a CMI is developed to interpret the effect and is in agreement with experimental results. The theory also predicts that the degree of second-order coherence can be much greater than $2$ if chaotic light propagates $N$ times in a CMI. Finally, a new type of weak signals detection setup which employs broadband chaotic light circulating in a CMI is proposed. Recently, ghost imaging has been attracting attentions because its mechanism would lead to many applications inaccessible to conventional imaging methods. However, it is challenging for high contrast and high resolution imaging, due to its low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the demand of high sampling rate in detection. To circumvent these challenges, we here propose a ghost imaging scheme that exploits Haar wavelets as illuminating patterns with a bi-frequency light projecting system and frequency-selecting single-pixel detectors. This method provides a theoretically 100% image contrast and high detection SNR, which reduces the requirement of high dynamic range of detectors, enabling high resolution ghost imaging. Moreover, it can highly reduce the sampling rate (far below Nyquist limit) for a sparse object by adaptively abandoning unnecessary patterns during the measurement. These characteristics are experimentally verified with a resolution of 512 times 512 and a sampling rate lower than 5%. Single-pixel imaging is suitable for low light level scenarios because a bucket detector is employed to maximally collect the light from an object. However, one of the challenges is its slow imaging speed, mainly due to the slow light modulation technique. We here demonstrate 1.4MHz video imaging based on computational ghost imaging with a RGB LED array having a full-range frame rate up to 100MHz. With this method, the motion of a high speed propeller is observed. Moreover, by exploiting single-photon detectors to increase the detection efficiency, this method is developed for ultra-high-speed imaging under low light level.

Ghost imaging is usually based on optoelectronic process and eletronic computing. We here propose a new ghost imaging scheme, which avoids any optoelectronic or electronic process. Instead, the proposed scheme exploits all-optical correlation via the light-light interaction and the vision persistence effect to generate images observed by naked eyes. To realize high contrast naked-eye ghost imaging, a special pattern-scanning architecture on a low-speed light-modulation disk is designed, which also enables high-resolution imaging with lower-order Hadamard vectors and boosts the imaging speed. With this approach, we realize high-contrast real-time ghost imaging for moving colored objects.

Based on optical correlations, ghost imaging is usually reconstructed by computer algorithm from the acquired data. We here proposed an alternatively high contrast naked-eye ghost imaging scheme which avoids computer algorithm processing. Instead, the proposed scheme uses a photoelectric feedback loop to realize the multiplication process of traditional ghost imaging. Meanwhile, it exploits the vision persistence effect to implement integral process and to generate negative images observed by naked eyes. To realize high contrast naked-eye ghost imaging, a special pattern-scanning architecture on a low-speed light-modulation mask is designed, which enables high-resolution imaging with lower-order Hadamard vectors and boosts the imaging speed as well. Moreover, two kinds of feedback circuits, the digital circuit and the analog circuit, are presented respectively, which can achieve high-speed feedback operation on the light intensity. With this approach, we demonstrate high-contrast real-time imaging for moving objects.

Three-photon superbunching is experimentally observed with the recently proposed superbunching pseudothermal light. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that three-photon superbunching is observed in linear optical system. From the quantum optics point of view, three-photon superbunching is interpreted as the result of constructive-destructive three-photon interference. The key to observe three-photon superbunching in superbunching pseudothermal light is that all the different ways to trigger a three-photon coincidence count are in principle indistinguishable, which is experimentally guaranteed by putting a pinhole before each rotating groundglass to ensure that all the passed photons are within one coherence area. The observed three-photon superbunching is helpful to increase the visibility of ghost imaging and understand the physics of third-order interference of light., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Pseudothermal light by scattering laser light from rotating groundglass has been extensively employed to study optical coherence in both classical and quantum optics ever since its invention in 1960s. In this paper, we will show that by replacing the invariant intensity laser light in pseudothermal light source with intensity modulated laser light, superbunching pseudothermal light can be obtained. Two-photon interference in Feynman's path integral theory is employed to interpret the phenomenon. Two-photon superbunching is experimentally observed by employing common instruments in optical laboratory. High visibility temporal ghost imaging with classical light is possible when superbunching pseudothermal light is employed. In the numerical simulation, the visibility of temporal ghost imaging with pseudothermal light equaling ($4.7\pm 0.2$)\% can be increased to ($75\pm 8$)\% in the same scheme with superbunching pseudothermal light. The reasons for the difference in visibility and quality of the retrieved images in different situations are discussed in detail. It is concluded that high visibility and high quality temporal ghost image can be obtained by collecting large enough number of data points. The results are helpful to understand the difference between ghost imaging with classical light and entangled photon pairs. Two-photon superbunching of pseudothermal light is observed with single-mode continuous-wave laser light in a linear optical system. By adding more two-photon paths via three rotating ground glasses,g(2)(0) = 7.10 is experimentally observed. The second-order temporal coherence function of superbunching pseudothermal light is theoretically and experimentally studied in detail. It is predicted that the degree of coherence of light can be increased dramatically by adding more multi-photon paths. For instance, the degree of the second- and third-order coherence of the superbunching pseudothermal light with five rotating ground glasses can reach 32 and 7776, respectively. The results are helpful to understand the physics of superbunching and to improve the visibility of thermal light ghost imaging.

A novel and simple superbunching pseudothermal light source is introduced based on common instruments such as laser, lens, pinhole and groundglass. $g^{(2)}(0)=3.66 \pm 0.02$ is observed in the suggested scheme by employing two rotating groundglass. Quantum and classical theories are employed to interpret the observed superbunching effect. It is predicted that $g^{(2)}(0)$ can reach $2^N$ if $N$ rotating groundglass were employed. These results are helpful to understand the physics of superbunching. Ghost imaging with thermal fermions is calculated based on two-particle interference in Feynman's path integral theory. It is found that ghost imaging with thermal fermions can be simulated by ghost imaging with thermal bosons and classical particles. Photons in pseudothermal light are employed to experimentally study fermionic ghost imaging. Ghost imaging with thermal bosons and fermions is discussed based on the point-to-point (spot) correlation between the object and image planes. The experimental study of the second-order interference with fermions is much less than the one with bosons since it is much more difficult to do experiments with fermions than with photons. Based on the conclusion that the behavior of two identical classical particles has exactly half fermionic and half bosonic characteristics (PRA \textbf{88}, 012130 (2013)), we have studied the second-order interference of fermions via the second-order interference of photons in Hanbury Brown-Twiss and Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometers, respectively. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical predictions, which serve as an efficient guidance for the future interference experiments with fermions. The second-order temporal interference between two independent single-mode continuous-wave lasers is discussed by employing two-photon interference in Feynman's path integral theory. It is concluded that whether the second-order temporal interference pattern can be retrieved via two-photon coincidence counting measurement is dependent on the relationship between the resolution time of the detection system and the frequency difference between these two lasers. Two identical and tunable single-mode diode lasers are employed to verify the predictions experimentally. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical predictions. The first- and second-order temporal interference between two independent thermal and laser light beams is discussed by employing the superposition principle in Feynman's path integral theory. It is concluded that the first-order temporal interference pattern can not be observed by superposing thermal and laser light, while the second-order temporal interference pattern can be observed in the same condition. These predictions are experimentally verified by employing pseudothermal light to simulate thermal light. The indistinguishability of non-identical photons is dependent on detection system in quantum physics. If two photons with different wavelengths are indistinguishable for a detection system, there can be two-photon interference when these two photons are incident to two input ports of a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer, respectively. The reason why two-photon interference phenomena are different for classical and nonclassical light is not due to interference, but due to the properties of light and detection system. We introduce two-dimensional (2D) linear and nonlinear Talbot effects. They are produced by propagating periodic 2D diffraction patterns and can be visualized as 3D stacks of Talbot carpets. The nonlinear Talbot effect originates from 2D rogue waves and forms in a bulk 3D nonlinear medium. The recurrences of an input rogue wave are observed at the Talbot length and at the half-Talbot length, with a \pi phase shift; no other recurrences are observed. Different from the nonlinear Talbot effect, the linear effect displays the usual fractional Talbot images as well. We also find that the smaller the period of incident rogue waves, the shorter the Talbot length. Increasing the beam intensity increases the Talbot length, but above a threshold this leads to a catastrophic self-focusing phenomenon which destroys the effect. We also find that the Talbot recurrence can be viewed as a self-Fourier transform of the initial periodic beam that is automatically performed during propagation. In particular, linear Talbot effect can be viewed as a fractional self-Fourier transform, whereas the nonlinear Talbot effect can be viewed as the regular self-Fourier transform. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the rogue wave initial condition is sufficient but not necessary for the observation of the effect. It may also be observed from other periodic inputs, provided they are set on a finite background. We demonstrate the photonic Floquet topological insulator (PFTI) in an atomic vapor with nonlinear susceptibilities. The interference of three coupling fields splits the energy levels periodically to form a periodic refractive index structure with honeycomb symmetry that can be adjusted by the choice of frequency detunings and intensities of the coupling fields, which all affect the appearance of Dirac cones in the momentum space. When the honeycomb lattice sites are helically ordered along the propagation direction, we obtain a PFTI in the atomic vapor in which an obliquely incident beam moves along the zigzag edge without scattering energy into the PFTI, due to the confinement of the edge states. The appearance of Dirac cones and the formation of PFTI is strongly affected by the nonlinear susceptibilities; i.e. the PFTI can be shut off by the third-order nonlinear susceptibility and re-opened up by the fifth-order one., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We investigate numerically interactions between two bright or dark incoherent localized beams in an strontium barium niobate photorefractive crystal in one dimension, using the coherent density method. For the case of bright beams, if the interacting beams are in-phase, they attract each other during propagation and form bound breathers; if out-of-phase, the beams repel each other and fly away. The bright incoherent beams do not radiate much and form long-lived well-defined breathers or quasi-stable solitons. If the phase difference is $\pi/2$, the interacting beams may both attract or repel each other, depending on the interval between the two beams, the beam widths, and the degree of coherence. For the case of dark incoherent beams, in addition to the above the interactions also depend on the symmetry of the incident beams. As already known, an even-symmetric incident beam tends to split into a doublet, whereas an odd-symmetric incident beam tends to split into a triplet. When launched in pairs, the dark beams display dynamics consistent with such a picture and in general obey soliton-like conservation laws, so that the collisions are mostly elastic, leading to little energy and momentum exchange. But they also radiate and breathe while propagating. In all the cases, the smaller the interval between the two interacting beams, the stronger the mutual interaction. We investigate three-dimensional nonparaxial linear accelerating beams arising from the transverse Whittaker integral. They include different Mathieu, Weber, and Fresnel beams, among other. These beams accelerate along a semicircular trajectory, with almost invariant nondiffracting shapes. The transverse patterns of accelerating beams are determined by their angular spectra, which are constructed from the Mathieu functions, Weber functions, and Fresnel integrals. Our results not only enrich the understanding of multidimensional nonparaxial accelerating beams, but also display their real applicative potential -- owing to the usefulness of Mathieu and Weber functions, and Fresnel integrals in describing a wealth of wave phenomena in nature., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We investigate numerically interactions between two in-phase or out-of-phase Airy beams and nonlinear accelerating beams in Kerr and saturable nonlinear media in one transverse dimension. We discuss different cases in which the beams with different intensities are launched into the medium, but accelerate in opposite directions. Since both the Airy beams and nonlinear accelerating beams possess infinite oscillating tails, we discuss interactions between truncated beams, with finite energies. During interactions we see solitons and soliton pairs generated that are not accelerating. In general, the higher the intensities of interacting beams, the easier to form solitons; when the intensities are small enough, no solitons are generated. Upon adjusting the interval between the launched beams, their interaction exhibits different properties. If the interval is large relative to the width of the first lobes, the generated soliton pairs just propagate individually and do not interact much. However, if the interval is comparable to the widths of the maximum lobes, the pairs strongly interact and display varied behavior., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Akhmediev and Kuznetsov-Ma breathers are rogue wave solutions of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE). Talbot effect (TE) is an image recurrence phenomenon in the diffraction of light waves. We report the nonlinear TE of rogue waves in a cubic medium. It is different from the linear TE, in that the wave propagates in a NL medium and is an eigenmode of NLSE. Periodic rogue waves impinging on a NL medium exhibit recurrent behavior, but only at the TE length and at the half-TE length with a \pi-phase shift; the fractional TE is absent. The NL TE is the result of the NL interference of the lobes of rogue wave breathers. This interaction is related to the transverse period and intensity of breathers, in that the bigger the period and the higher the intensity, the shorter the TE length., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate that beams originating from Fresnel diffraction patterns are self-accelerating in free space. In addition to accelerating and self-healing, they also exhibit parabolic deceleration property, which is in stark contrast to other accelerating beams. We find that the trajectory of Fresnel paraxial accelerating beams is similar to that of nonparaxial Weber beams. Decelerating and accelerating regions are separated by a critical propagation distance, at which no acceleration is present. During deceleration, the Fresnel diffraction beams undergo self-smoothing, in which oscillations of the diffracted waves gradually focus and smooth out at the critical distance.

We investigate numerically the interactions of two in-phase and out-of-phase Airy beams and nonlinear accelerating beams in Kerr and saturable nonlinear media, in one transverse dimension. We find that bound and unbound soliton pairs, as well as single solitons, can form in such interactions. If the interval between two incident beams is large relative to the width of their first lobes, the generated soliton pairs just propagate individually and do not interact. However, if the interval is comparable to the widths of the maximum lobes, the pairs interact and display varied behavior. In the in-phase case, they attract each other and exhibit stable bound, oscillating, and unbound states, after shedding some radiation initially. In the out-of-phase case, they repel each other and after an initial interaction, fly away as individual solitons.
