1. The effect of liver metastases on clinical efficacy of first‐line programmed death‐1 inhibitor plus chemotherapy in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: A post hoc analysis of ASTRUM‐007 and meta‐analysis

Abstract

Abstract Objective To explore the efficacy of serplulimab plus chemotherapy in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients with liver metastases. Methods A post hoc exploratory analysis of ASTRUM‐007 study was performed, focusing on the association between the liver metastases status and the clinical outcomes. A systematic literature search of electronic databases was conducted to identify eligible randomized controlled trials for the meta‐analysis. Study‐level pooled analyses of hazard ratios (HRs) for PFS according to liver metastases were performed. Results The post hoc analysis of ASTRUM‐007 showed that although patients with liver metastases had a worse prognosis comparing with the non‐liver metastases patients in both treatment arms (serplulimab plus chemotherapy arm: median PFS, 5.7 vs. 6.6 months, HR 1.57 [95% CI, 1.15–2.13]; median OS, 13.7 vs. 15.3 months, HR 1.48 [95% CI, 1.09–1.98]; placebo plus chemotherapy arm: median PFS, 4.3 vs. 5.5 months, HR 1.58 [95% CI, 1.01–2.39]; median OS, 10.3 vs. 11.2 months, HR 1.32 [95% CI, 0.84–2.00]), OS and PFS benefits derived from serplulimab plus chemotherapy versus placebo plus chemotherapy in this study were observed in both patients with liver metastases (HR of PFS: 0.60; 95% CI, 0.37–0.97; HR of OS: 0.68; 95% CI, 0.43–1.11) and the non‐liver metastases patients (HR of PFS: 0.62; 95% CI, 0.49–0.80; HR of OS: 0.69; 95% CI, 0.55–0.87) with similar magnitude. Three randomized controlled trials were included in the meta‐analysis. Pooled HRs demonstrated that the addition of anti‐PD‐1 antibodies significantly improved PFS compared to chemotherapy alone regardless of liver metastases status. Conclusions This study reveals that the presence of liver metastases is a poor prognostic factor but does not affect the improvements in both PFS and OS brought by adding PD‐1 blockade to chemotherapy in ESCC patients. Predictive biomarkers for survival in these patients warrant further investigation.

Abstract

Accurate identification and understanding of various metallic minerals are crucial for deciphering geological formations, structures, and ages. Giving their pivotal role as essential natural resources, a microscopic exploration of metallic minerals becomes imperative. Traditional analytical methods, while helpful, exhibit certain limitations. However, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, distinguished by its high signal-to-noise ratio, expansive frequency band, and low incident wave energy, is a promising complement to conventional techniques in characterizing metallic minerals. This study employs terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to examine samples of Stibnite, Sphalerite, Galena, and Pyrite originating from diverse geological conditions. The vibrations of molecules within these metallic minerals induce discernible changes in the terahertz spectra. Our findings untiate the extensive potential of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in the characterization of metallic minerals, affirming its considerable practical value in mineral resource exploration.

3. Reservoir characteristics and genesis of the Lower Ordovician Tongzi Formation in central Sichuan Basin, China

Abstract

Although the Ordovician petroleum exploration in the Sichuan Basin has been developed slowly for a long time, deepening the research of reservoir characteristics and genesis is still a robust way to accelerate it. This paper characterizes the Ordovician reservoirs in the central part of Sichuan Basin and analyzes their genesis based on cores, thin sections, well logs and drilling data. The results show the reservoirs concentrated in the Lower Ordovician Tongzi Formation, which consist mainly of sandy oolitic dolostones, bioclastic dolostones, fine crystalline dolostones, sandy dolomitized conglomerates, sandy dolostones and dolomite sandstone. The porosity types include interparticle pore, intraparticle pore, moldic pore, fracture and vug. Throats are mostly necked and flaky. The Tongzi Formation reservoirs mainly experienced three types of diageneses, including compaction, cementation and dissolution. The reservoir development was controlled by multiple factors of deposition, diagenesis and tectonics; the shoal facies is the basis, the penecontemporaneous dissolution and dolomitization are the main driving force, and the burial dissolution is the aid. The study can provide reference for deepening the Ordovician petroleum exploration and development in the Sichuan Basin.

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the prognostic value of white blood cells detected for the first time after adjuvant chemotherapy in primary operable non-small cell lung cancer. Methods: From January 2010 to May 2016, data from 208 patients who underwent surgery for non-small cell lung cancer were retrospectively analyzed. Results: A white blood cell count detected for the first time after adjuvant chemotherapy greater than 7.00 was an independent predictor of poor disease-free survival (Hazard ratio: 1.736, 95% confidence interval: 1.267-2.378; P = .001) and overall survival (Hazard ratio: 1.802, 95% confidence interval: 1.305-2.471; P = .000). In a further study, after myelosuppression, survival analysis indicated that the patients with white blood cell counts 7.00 and increased white blood cell after chemotherapy compared to pretreatment had a poorer prognosis than patients with white blood cell ≤7.00 and no increase in white blood cell, P = .000 and P = .002, respectively. We further evaluated the prognosis of the 2 groups in different levels of white blood cell. In the group of patients with white blood cell ≤4.0, patients with chemotherapy cycles ≤2, and >2 showed no differences (Hazard ratio: 2.346, 95% confidence interval: 0.288-19.073, P = .425). In the group of patients with white blood cell of 4.0 to 7.0, the prognosis of patients with chemotherapy cycles ≤2 and patients with chemotherapy cycles >2 showed no difference (Hazard ratio: 0.560, 95% confidence interval: 0.248-1.261, P = .161). In the group of patients with white blood cell >7.0, patients with >2 chemotherapy cycles had a better prognosis than patients with chemotherapy cycles ≤2 (Hazard ratio: 0.573, 95% confidence interval: 0.338-0.971, P = .037) Conclusions: The level of white blood cells detected for the first time after adjuvant chemotherapy is an independent risk factor for non-small cell lung cancer, especially for patients with nonadenocarcinoma. In addition, the level of white blood cells after postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy and its change compared with pretreatment might also provide useful information regarding the best choice of cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy.

Abstract

Grain rate (GR) is a very important trait in maize ( Zea mays L.) breeding program related to yield. To realize its genetic basis, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population and different nitrogen (N) regimes were used to map the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for GR in maize. As a result, two QTLs were identified under high N regime and could explain a total of 14.84% of phenotypic variance. Due to additive effect, the QTL on chromosome 6 could decrease 0.029 of GR, while the QTL on chromosome 9 could increase 0.0203 of GR. Under low N regime, one QTL was mapped on chromosome 6 and could account for 9.52% of phenotypic variance, and owning to additive effect, the QTL could make GR decrease by 0.0234. The result in comparison with previous studies showed that the three QTLs in this present study were new quantitative loci associated with GR in maize. These results were beneficial for understanding the genetic basis of GR in maize. Key words : Maize ( Zea mays L.), grain rate, quantitative trait locus, recombinant inbred line, nitrogen.

Abstract

To efficiently address the challenge of thermoelastic coupling in functionally graded materials, we propose an approach that combines the radial integral boundary element method (RIBEM) with proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). This integration establishes a swift reduced-order model to transform the high-dimensional system of equations into a more manageable, low-dimensional counterpart. The implementation of this reduced-order model offers the potential for rapid numerical simulations of functionally graded materials (FGMs) under thermal shock loading. Initially, the RIBEM is utilized to resolve the thermal coupling issue within the FGMs. From these solutions, a snapshot matrix is constructed, capturing the solved temperature and displacement fields. Subsequently, the POD modes are established and a POD reduced-order model is constructed for the boundary element format of the thermally coupled problem. Finally, a system of low-order discrete differential equations is solved. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the results obtained from the reduced-order model closely align with those of the full-order model, even when considering variations in structural parameters or impact loads. Thus, the introduction of the reduced-order model not only guarantees solution accuracy but also significantly enhances computational efficiency.

Abstract

Nitrogen (N) deficiency will severely affect many metabolic pathways and physiological progresses during maize ( Zea mays L.) growth and change of anthesis-silking interval (ASI) is one of the most serious consequences. To realize the genetic basis of ASI, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population consisting of 239 RILs, derived from the cross between Mo17 and Huangzao4, was used to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling ASI under different N environments. As a result, 6 QTLs were detected under high N environment on chromosome 3, 6, 7 and 8 and could explain total 53.67% of phenotypic variance. While, under low N environment, only 3 QTLs were identified on chromosome 6, 7 and 8, and they could account for total 31.87% of phenotypic variance. The two QTLs Qasihn6-1 and Qasihn3-1 , identified under high N environment, were quite near to their linked marker Phi077 and Bnlg197, respectively, with less than 1 cM of genetic distance. These results are beneficial for understanding the genetic basis of ASI in maize.

To realize the genetic basis of DPS, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population from the cross between Mo17 and Huangzao4 was used to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling DPS under two N regimes. As a result, 2 QTLs were detected, of which the QTL identified under both N regimes was quite near to the marker Nc134, with 0 centiMorgan (cM) of mapping distance between them, it could account for 15.36% and 10.39% of phenotypic variance under high and low N regimes respectively, and could make maize flower with ahead of time about 1 d duo to its additive effect. The other QTL, identified only under low N regime, was close to marker Bnlg1129 with 8.6 cM of maping distance between them, could explain 12.39% of phenotypic variance and increase DPS for 0.8 d owing to its additive effect. These results are beneficial for understanding the genetic basis of DPS in maize.

Abstract

To evaluate the results of chest wall reconstruction (CWR) in patients who underwent chest wall tumor resection accompanying huge chest wall defect.From Jan. 1998 to Mar. 2003, 31 patients underwent CWR. Among them, 20 were male and 11 female. The age ranged from 8 to 72 years. The indications for resection were primary chest wall tumor in 21 patients, lung cancer with invasion of chest wall 6, recurrence of breast cancer 2, radiation necrosis 1 and skin cancer 1. The number of rib resected was 2-7 ribs (3.6 in average). The defect was 20-220 cm2 (97.1 cm2 in average). Concomitant resection was done in 13 patients, including lobectomy or wedge resection of lung 10, partial resection of diaphragm 2, and partial sternotomy 1. Seven patients underwent soft tissue reconstruction alone (latissimus dorsi+greater omentum, latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap, latissimus dorsi muscle flap), 5 patients bony reconstruction alone (Prolene web), and simultaneous BR and STR were performed in 19 patients (latissimus dorsi, pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi+fascia lata, and Prolene web).Three patients (9.7%) developed postoperative complications. Postoperative survival period was 6-57 months with a median of 22 months.A favorable clinical outcome can be achieved by CWR for the patients with huge chest wall defects that result from resection of chest wall tumors.
