Abstract Single‐atom alloys (SAAs) have gained increasing prominence in the field of selective hydrogenation reactions due to their uniform distribution of active sites and the unique host‐guest metal interactions. Herein, 15 SAAs are constructed to comprehensively elucidate the relationship between host‐guest metal interaction and catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of 4‐nitrostyrene (4‐NS) by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results demonstrate that the SAAs with strong host‐guest metal interactions exhibit a preference for N─O bond cleavage, and the reaction energy barrier of the hydrogenation process is primarily influenced by the host metal. Among them, Ir1Ni SAA stands out as the prime catalyst candidate, showcasing exceptional activity and selectivity. Furthermore, the Ir1Ni SAA is subsequently prepared through precise synthesis techniques and evaluated in the selective hydrogenation of 4‐NS to 4‐aminostyrene (4‐AS). As anticipated, the Ir1Ni SAA demonstrates extraordinary catalytic performance (yield > 96%). In situ FT‐IR experiments and DFT calculations further confirmed that the unique host‐guest metal interaction at the Ir‐Ni interface site of Ir1Ni SAA endows it with excellent 4‐NS selective hydrogenation ability. This work provides valuable insights into enhancing the performance of SAAs catalysts in selective hydrogenation reactions by modulating the host‐guest metal interactions.

Abstract Copper-based catalysts serve as the predominant methanol steam reforming material although several fundamental issues remain ambiguous such as the identity of active center and the aspects of reaction mechanism. Herein, we prepare Cu/Cu(Al)O x catalysts with amorphous alumina-stabilized Cu2O adjoining Cu nanoparticle to provide Cu0−Cu+ sites. The optimized catalyst exhibits 99.5% CH3OH conversion with a corresponding H2 production rate of 110.8 μmol s−1 gcat −1 with stability over 300 h at 240 °C. A binary function correlation between the CH3OH reaction rate and surface concentrations of Cu0 and Cu+ is established based on kinetic studies. Intrinsic active sites in the catalyst are investigated with in situ spectroscopy characterization and theoretical calculations. Namely, we find that important oxygen-containing intermediates (CH3O* and HCOO*) adsorb at Cu0−Cu+ sites with a moderate adsorption strength, which promotes electron transfer from the catalyst to surface species and significantly reduces the reaction barrier of the C−H bond cleavage in CH3O* and HCOO* intermediates.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common malignancy in men around the world. In recent years, studies have shown that the development of PCa is driven by epigenetic modifications to a great extent, mediated through abnormal DNA methylation. Aberrant methylation of DNA promoters leads to abnormal expression of genes that regulate the development and progression of PCa. In addition, the current diagnosis of PCa still relies on tissue invasiveness. Prostate biopsy is an invasive process whereas non-invasive liquid biopsy based measurement of abnormal DNA methylation is expected to become the future diagnostic method and may be established as a therapeutic target. This article reviews the progress on DNA methylation in the development, early diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of PCa.

Abstract Nanomaterials have been well demonstrated to have the potential to be used for tumor cell-targeted drug delivery. Targeted inhibition of miR-221 was proved to promote the sensitivity of triple genitive breast cancer (TNBC) cells to chemo-drugs. In order to improve the chemotherapeutic effect in TNBC, herein, we developed a novel kind of nanoparticles shelled with PLGA and loaded with perfluoropentane (PFP), paclitaxel (PTX), and anti-miR-221 inhibitor, which was named PANP. Ultrasound-triggered vaporization of PFP in PANPs was utilized for real-time imaging track of the nanoparticles in vivo. In addition, macrophages were applied for the internalization of PANPs to form RAW-PANP with strong chemotaxis to accumulate around cancer cells. Nanoparticles with different contents did not cause M2 polarization compared with the control group but caused polarization toward M1. We compared the inherent tumor-homing behavior of macrophages containing different contents with that of normal macrophages and no significant abnormalities were observed. After injection into the tumor-burden mice, RAW-PANPs showed enrichment within tumor tissues. Upon the ultrasound cavitation-triggered burst, PTX was released in the tumor. Meanwhile, the release of anti-miR-221 improved the sensitivity of tumor cells to PTX. As a result, RAW-PANPs showed high efficiency in suppressing TNBC cell proliferation in vitro and inhibiting tumor growth and progression in vivo. The treatments did not induce liver, heart, or kidney injury. In conclusion, the current study not only developed a macrophage-carried, ultrasound-triggered, cancer cell-targeted chemotherapeutic system, but also demonstrated a miRNA-based technique to promote drug sensitivity of cancer cells, which holds strong potential to treat patients with TNBC, especially for those suffering drug-resistance. The innovation of this study is to use macrophages to deliver nanoparticles to the tumors and then use ultrasound locally to burst the nanoparticles to release the miRNA and PTX.

Abstract Fanconi anemia (FA) gene mutations are critical components in the genetic etiology of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). Fance −/− mice detected meiotic arrest of primordial germ cells (PGCs) as early as embryonic day (E) 13.5 and exhibited decreased ovarian reserve after birth. However, the mechanism of Fance defect leading to dysgenesis of PGCs is unclear. We aimed to explore the effect of Fance defects on mitotic proliferation of PGCs. Combined with transcriptomic sequencing and validation, we examined the effect of Fance defects on cell cycle, transcription–replication conflicts (TRCs), and multiple DNA repair pathways in PGCs during active DNA replication at E11.5 and E12.5. Results showed Fance defects cause decreased numbers of PGCs during rapid mitosis at E11.5 and E12.5. Mitotic cell cycle progression of Fance −/− PGCs was blocked at E11.5 and E12.5, shown by decreased cell proportions in S and G2 phases and increased cell proportions in M phase. RNA-seq suggested the mechanisms involved in DNA replication and repair. We found Fance −/− PGCs accumulate TRCs during active DNA replication at E11.5 and E12.5. Fance −/− PGCs down-regulate multiple DNA repair pathways at E11.5 and E12.5 including the FA pathway, homologous recombination (HR) pathway, and base excision repair (BER) pathway. In conclusion, Fance defect impaired the mitotic proliferation of PGCs leading to rapidly decreased numbers and abnormal cell cycle distribution. Proliferation inhibition of Fance −/− PGCs was associated with accumulated TRCs and down-regulation of FA, HR, BER pathways. These provided a theoretical basis for identifying the inherited etiology and guiding potential fertility management for POI.

Abstract The metal-support interaction (MSI) in heterogeneous catalysts plays a crucial role in reforming reaction to produce renewable hydrogen, but conventional objects are limited to single metal and support. Herein, we report a type of RhNi/TiO2 catalysts with tunable RhNi-TiO2 strong bimetal-support interaction (SBMSI) derived from structure topological transformation of RhNiTi-layered double hydroxides (RhNiTi-LDHs) precursors. The resulting 0.5RhNi/TiO2 catalyst (with 0.5 wt.% Rh) exhibits extraordinary catalytic performance toward ethanol steam reforming (ESR) reaction with a H2 yield of 61.7%, a H2 production rate of 12.2 L h−1 gcat −1 and a high operational stability (300 h), which is preponderant to the state-of-the-art catalysts. By virtue of synergistic catalysis of multifunctional interface structure (Rh-Ni δ−-O v -Ti3+; O v denotes oxygen vacancy), the generation of formate intermediate (the rate-determining step in ESR reaction) from steam reforming of CO and CH x is significantly promoted on 0.5RhNi/TiO2 catalyst, accounting for its ultra-high H2 production.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung tumor; however, we lack effective early detection indicators and therapeutic targets. Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4 gamma 1 (EIF4G1) is vital to initiate protein synthesis, acting as a scaffolding protein for the eukaryotic protein translation initiation factor complex, EIF4F, which regulates protein synthesis together with EIF4A, EIF4E, and other translation initiation factors. However, EIF4G1’s function in NSCLC cancer is unclear. Herein, transcriptome sequencing showed that knockdown of EIF4G1 in H1299 NSCLC cells upregulated the expression of various inflammation-related factors. Inflammatory cytokines were also significantly overexpressed in NSCLC tumor tissues, among which CXCL8 (encoding C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 8) showed the most significant changes in both in the transcriptome sequencing data and tumor tissues. We revealed that EIF4G1 regulates the protein level of TNF receptor superfamily member 10a (TNFRSF10A) resulting in activation of the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) pathways, which induces CXCL8 secretion, leading to targeted chemotaxis of immune cells. We verified that H1299 cells with EIF4G1 knockdown showed increased chemotaxis compared with the control group and promoted increased chemotaxis of macrophages. These data suggested that EIF4G1 is an important molecule in the inflammatory response of cancer tissues in NSCLC.

Introduction: Monitoring surface water through the extraction of water bodies from high-resolution remote sensing images is of significant importance. With the advancements in deep learning, deep neural networks have been increasingly applied to high-resolution remote sensing image segmentation. However, conventional convolutional models face challenges in water body extraction, including issues like unclear water boundaries and a high number of training parameters.Methods: In this study, we employed the DeeplabV3+ network for water body extraction in high-resolution remote sensing images. However, the traditional DeeplabV3+ network exhibited limitations in segmentation accuracy for high-resolution remote sensing images and incurred high training costs due to a large number of parameters. To address these issues, we made several improvements to the traditional DeeplabV3+ network: Replaced the backbone network with MobileNetV2. Added a Channel Attention (CA) module to the MobileNetV2 feature extraction network. Introduced an Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) module. Implemented Focal loss for balanced loss computation.Results: Our proposed method yielded significant enhancements. It not only improved the segmentation accuracy of water bodies in high-resolution remote sensing images but also effectively reduced the number of network parameters and training time. Experimental results on the Water dataset demonstrated superior performance compared to other networks: Outperformed the U-Net network by 3.06% in terms of mean Intersection over Union (mIoU). Outperformed the MACU-Net network by 1.03%. Outperformed the traditional DeeplabV3+ network by 2.05%. The proposed method surpassed not only the traditional DeeplabV3+ but also U-Net, PSP-Net, and MACU-Net networks.Discussion: These results highlight the effectiveness of our modified DeeplabV3+ network with MobileNetV2 backbone, CA module, ASPP module, and Focal loss for water body extraction in high-resolution remote sensing images. The reduction in training time and parameters makes our approach a promising solution for accurate and efficient water body segmentation in remote sensing applications.

Abstract Smart actuators that can convert external energy stimuli into mechanical energy output have great potential in industrial, biomedical, and military applications. However, the existed disadvantage such as complex fabrication process, single stimulus source, and the requirement of artificial energy restrict their further development. Herein, a MXene/polyethylene (PE)‐based soft actuator with multistimulus response and the ability to be driven by natural sunlight and human humidity is proposed through a simple method. Owing to the excellent electrical conductivity, high photothermal conversion capability, and surface hydrophilicity of MXene, the MXene/PE actuator exhibits rapid and large bending deformation in response to external multistimuli such as light, electricity, heat, and humidity. Owing to the simple preparation, and anisotropic, tailorable and programmable properties of the MXene/PE actuator, a soft robot that can crawl directionally under light conditions is constructed. In addition, based on the high sensitivity response of the actuator to light and humidity, smart clothing that can generate reversible bending deformation under natural sunlight as well as sweat conditions is developed. These results provide a new inspiration for the design of high‐performance soft actuators with multistimulus response, and demonstrate the potential applications of the MXene/PE actuators in smart devices, bionic robots, and wearable clothing.

This study examined the effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) on the intestinal flora of mice with allergic asthma and its molecular mechanism on lung injury and inflammation. Bioinformatics analysis examined LBP targets for allergic asthma and the gut microbial ecosystem. IL-13 was used to create an in vitro cell model of allergic asthma in lung epithelial cell LA-4 and ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice. LBP effects on inflammatory cell infiltration, mucus formation, proinflammatory factor release, and pulmonary epithelial fucosylation were examined after loss- and gain-function experiments. LBP therapy altered fecal microbial populations, decreased IL-15RA and FUT2 expression, and reduced pulmonary epithelial fucosylation in asthmatic mice. IL-15RA or FUT2 knockdown mimicked LBPs in asthmatic mice. More notably, LBPs or IL-15RA/FUT2 knockdown reduced pulmonary epithelial cell fucosylation. LBP reduces lung injury and inflammation in mice with allergic asthma by downregulating the IL-15RA/FUT2 pathway, inhibiting pulmonary epithelial fucosylation, and increasing anti-inflammatory intestinal flora.

Abstract Background DNA methylation is an essential factor in the progression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) to cervical cancer. The aim was to investigate the diagnostic value provided by methylation biomarkers of six tumor suppressor genes (ASTN1, DLX1, ITGA4, RXFP3, SOX17 and ZNF671) for cervical precancerous lesions and cervical cancer. Methods The histological cervical specimens of 396 cases including 93 CIN1, 99 CIN2, 93 CIN3 and 111 cervical cancers were tested for methylation-specific PCR assay (GynTect®) of score and positive rate. Among them, 66 CIN1, 93 CIN2, 87 CIN3 and 72 cervical cancers were further used for paired analysis. A chi-square test was used to analyze the difference of methylation score and positive rate in cervical specimens. The paired t-test and paired chi-square test were for analyzing the methylation score and positive rate in paired CIN and cervical cancer cases. The specificity, sensitivity, odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of the GynTect® assay for CIN2 or worse (CIN2 +) and CIN3 or worse (CIN3 +) were evaluated. Results According to the chi-square test trend, hypermethylation increased with severity of the lesions as defined by histological grading (P = 0.000). The methylation score above 1.1 was more common in CIN2 + than in CIN1. The DNA methylation scores in the paired groups of CIN1, CIN3 and cervical cancer were significant differences (P = 0.033, 0.000 and 0.000, respectively), except for CIN2 (P = 0.171). While the positive rate of GynTect® in each paired group had no difference (all P > 0.05). IntroductionImmunogenic cell death (ICD) is a form of regulated cell death that activates an adaptive immune response in an immunocompetent host and is particularly sensitive to antigens from tumor cells. Kidney clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) is an immunogenic tumor with extensive tumor heterogeneity. However, no reliable predictive biomarkers have been identified to reflect the immune microenvironment and therapeutic response of KIRC.MethodsTherefore, we used the CIBERSORT and ESTIMATE algorithms to define three ICD clusters based on the expression of ICD-related genes in 661 KIRC patients. Subsequently, we identified three different ICD gene clusters based on the overlap of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) within the ICD clusters. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to calculate the ICD scores.ResultsThe results showed that patients with reduced ICD scores had a poorer prognosis and reduced transcript levels of immune checkpoint genes regulated with T cell differentiation. Furthermore, the ICD score was negatively correlated with the tumor mutation burden (TMB) value of KICD. patients with higher ICD scores showed clinical benefits and advantages of immunotherapy, indicating that the ICD score is an accurate and valid predictor to assess the effect of immunotherapy.DiscussionOverall, our study presents a comprehensive KICD immune-related ICD landscape that can provide guidance for current immunotherapy and predict patient prognosis to help physicians make judgments about the patient’s disease and treatment modalities, and can guide current research on immunotherapy strategies for KICD.

When the workpiece surface exhibits strong reflectivity, it becomes challenging to obtain accurate key measurements using non-contact, visual measurement techniques due to poor image quality. In this paper, we propose a high-precision measurement method shaft diameter based on an enhanced quality stripe image. By capturing two stripe images with different exposure times, we leverage their different characteristics. The results extracted from the low-exposure image are used to perform grayscale correction on the high-exposure image, improving the distribution of stripe grayscale and resulting in more accurate extraction results for the center points. The incorporation of different measurement positions and angles further enhanced measurement precision and robustness. Additionally, ellipse fitting is employed to derive shaft diameter. This method was applied to the profiles of different cross-sections and angles within the same shaft segment. To reduce the shape error of the shaft measurement, the average of these measurements was taken as the estimate of the average diameter for the shaft segment. In the experiments, the average shaft diameters determined by averaging elliptical estimations were compared with shaft diameters obtained using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) the maximum error and the minimum error were respectively 18 μm and 7 μm; the average error was 11 μm; and the root mean squared error of the multiple measurement results was 10.98 μm. The measurement accuracy achieved is six times higher than that obtained from the unprocessed stripe images.

Silage maize is cultivated due to its high nutritional value as a forage. China’s recent agricultural policy promotes the popularization and cultivation of silage maize. The production of silage maize is affected by planting density and nitrogen application. Based on investigating the planting habits of local farmers, we adjusted the planting density and nitrogen application rate to optimize the growth of silage maize. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of planting density (65,000 plant ha−1 (D1), 80,000 plant ha−1 (D2), and 95,000 plant ha−1 (D3)) and nitrogen rate (150 kg ha−1 (N1), 230 kg ha−1 (N2), and 310 kg ha−1 (N3)) on growth, yield, and quality of silage maize using a two-factor random block design. Planting density and nitrogen fertilizer significantly affected plant height, stem diameter, leaf area index, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and starch of silage maize. In summary, the combination of a planting density of 80,000 plants ha−1 and a nitrogen application rate of 310 kg ha−1 produced a higher crude protein and starch yield and better palatability and quality; this result can aid silage maize growth.

The high spatial and temporal resolution of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) can improve the diagnostic accuracy of breast cancer screening in patients who have dense breasts or are at high risk of breast cancer. However, the spatiotemporal resolution of DCE-MRI is limited by technical issues in clinical practice. Our earlier work demonstrated the use of image reconstruction with enhancement-constrained acceleration (ECA) to increase temporal resolution. ECA exploits the correlation in k-space between successive image acquisitions. Because of this correlation, and due to the very sparse enhancement at early times after contrast media injection, we can reconstruct images from highly under-sampled k-space data. Our previous results showed that ECA reconstruction at 0.25 seconds per image (4 Hz) can estimate bolus arrival time (BAT) and initial enhancement slope (iSlope) more accurately than a standard inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) when k-space data is sampled following a Cartesian based sampling trajectory with adequate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this follow-up study, we investigated the effect of different Cartesian based sampling trajectories, SNRs and acceleration rates on the performance of ECA reconstruction in estimating contrast media kinetics in lesions (BAT, iSlope and Ktrans) and in arteries (Peak signal intensity of first pass, time to peak, and BAT). We further validated ECA reconstruction with a flow phantom experiment. Our results show that ECA reconstruction of k-space data acquired with 'Under-sampling with Repeated Advancing Phase' (UnWRAP) trajectories with an acceleration factor of 14, and temporal resolution of 0.5 s/image and high SNR (SNR ≥ 30 dB, noise standard deviation (std) < 3%) ensures minor errors (5% or 1 s error) in lesion kinetics. Medium SNR (SNR ≥ 20 dB, noise std ≤ 10%) was needed to accurately measure arterial enhancement kinetics. Our results also suggest that accelerated temporal resolution with ECA with 0.5 s/image is practical.

BackgroundAlthough SARS-CoV-2 vaccines have proven effective in eliciting a protective immune response in healthy individuals, their ability to induce a durable immune response in immunocompromised individuals remains poorly understood. Primary antibody deficiency (PAD) syndromes are among the most common primary immunodeficiency disorders in adults and are characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia and impaired ability to mount robust antibody responses following infection or vaccination.MethodsHere, we present an analysis of both the B and T cell response in a prospective cohort of 30 individuals with PAD up to 150 days following initial COVID-19 vaccination and 150 days post mRNA booster vaccination.ResultsAfter the primary vaccination series, many of the individuals with PAD syndromes mounted SARS-CoV-2 specific memory B and CD4+ T cell responses that overall were comparable to healthy individuals. Nonetheless, individuals with PAD syndromes had reduced IgG1+ and CD11c+ memory B cell responses following the primary vaccination series, with the defect in IgG1 class-switching rescued following mRNA booster doses. Boosting also elicited an increase in the SARS-CoV-2-specific B and T cell response and the development of Omicron-specific memory B cells in COVID-19-naïve PAD patients. Individuals that lacked detectable B cell responses following primary vaccination did not benefit from booster vaccination.ConclusionTogether, these data indicate that SARS-CoV-2 vaccines elicit memory B and T cells in most PAD patients and highlights the importance of booster vaccination in immunodeficient individuals.

Cadmium ion (Cd2+) exposure has been reported to associate with the prevalence of dyslipidemia, and contribute to the initiation and progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, Cd2+ exposure perturbed specific metabolic pathways and underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In the present study, through lipidomics analyses of differential metabolites in serum between the Cd2+-exposed mice and the control group, 179 differential metabolites were identified, among which phosphatidylcholines (PCs) accounted for 49 % metabolites. Moreover, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment assay indicates that PCs participate in the metabolic pathways, including the Arachidonic Acid (AA) metabolism, which also could be potential NAFLD biomarkers. Moreover, in vivo and in vitro results suggested that Cd2+ exposure induced PC synthesis and remodeling, and increased AA level by promoting fatty acid desaturase 1 (FADS1) to catalyze synthesis process instead of cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) mediated release pathway. Inhibition of FADS1 by T3364366 could reverse Cd-induced AA, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and triglyceride (TAG) levels, and it also reduce cisplatin resistance in HepG2 cells. This study provides new evidence of Cd2+-induced dyslipidemia and reveals underlying molecular mechanism involved in liver dysfunction of Cd2+ exposure.

Abstract A novel loop antenna is proposed here. This antenna uses an annular arm made of pure water to take the place of the metallic loop of a typical loop antenna. The water arm is enclosed by a resin loop tube. The arm has circular cross section to excite a travelling wave of the axially symmetric mode and propagates along the loop. To change the volumes of water in the tube, the proposed antenna may work in different states. When the tube is fully filled, the proposed water antenna works as a loop antenna. When the tube is partly filled, it looks like and also works as a water dipole antenna, which indicates pattern reconfigurability. Background: Migraineurs are often plagued by sleep disorders. The university student population is high in number and is more vulnerable to migraines. However, no study has analyzed the sleep quality of students with migraine and related contributing factors.Objective: We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale to assess the sleep of migraine patients among college students and to explore the influencing factors of sleep quality.Methods: We performed primary screening for migraine using the ID-migraine screening, and further assessed headache characteristics, sleep, anxiety, depression, and mobile phone addiction in college students with positive primary screening, then diagnosed migraine according to the third edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3). Finally, we analyzed the factors influencing sleep quality using Binary Logistic Regression Analysis. Those with scores greater than 5 points on the PSQI scale were believed to have poor sleep quality.Results: The prevalence of migraine was 6.6%. A total of 545 migraineurs were eventually included in the analysis, the incidence of poor sleep quality was 64.04%. The three factors of experiencing aura (OR = 2.966, 95%CI = 1.756–5.010, P < 0.05), anxiety (OR = 2.778, 95%CI = 1.434–5.382, P < 0.05), and high Mobile phone addiction index (MPAI) score (OR = 1.025, 95%CI = 1.002–1.049, P < 0.05) contributed enormously to poor sleep quality. Moreover, the factors of aura symptoms (OR = 3.796, 95%CI = 2.041–7.058, P < 0.05), anxiety (OR = 3.146, 95%CI = 1.473–6.719, P < 0.05), and MPAI score (OR = 1.028, 95%CI = 1.002–1.054, P < 0.05) influenced the sleep quality of female migraineurs rather than male migraineurs.Conclusions: The incidence of poor sleep quality is high among university students with migraine. Aura symptoms, anxiety, and high MPAI score influence the sleep quality of migraineurs, especially females. The proposal of prevention and intervention measures is of great importance to the physical and mental health of students with migraine.Clinical Trial Registration: identifier ChiCTR1800014343.

Hole is the most common symmetrical geometric structure of mechanical parts, and aperture and hole center distance are important measured dimensions in machining. However, existing visual measurement methods often require high equipment installation accuracy and low measurement accuracy. To solve the problem of projection deformation of the measured hole: Firstly, a local coordinate system is created, and the coordinate plane of the coordinate is parallel to the end face of the measured hole. Secondly, a cone is established, the end face of the measured hole is alike to the bottom face of the cone, and the optical center of the camera is the vertex. The space equation of the cone is represented by the coordinates of the center point of the hole. Finally, a cutting plane is established near the imaging plane of the camera, and the intersection line equation between the plane and the cone is obtained, and the diameter of the measured hole and the coordinates of the center of the circle are obtained through the parameters of the intersection line equation. In order to solve the problem of errors in edge points of the hole, geometric constraints based on the center of the circle are used to improve measurement accuracy. This experiment takes the automobile insert mold as the measured part and uses the measurement model of this paper to measure the aperture and hole center distance of the mold. The measurement results show that the measurement accuracy of the aperture is 0.018 mm, the measurement accuracy of the center distance of the hole is 0.05 mm, and the maximum relative error is 2.2%.

Abstract Background Manipulation of neural stem and progenitor cells (NSPCs) is critical for the successful treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI) by NSPC transplantation, since their differentiation into neurons and oligodendrocytes can be inhibited by factors present in inflamed myelin. In this study, we examined the effects of LINGO-1 on spinal cord-derived NSPC (sp-NSPC) differentiation, the underlying mechanisms of action, and the functional recovery of mice after transplantation of manipulated cells. Methods sp-NSPCs were harvested from female adult C57/BL6 mice after SCI induced with an NYU impactor. These cells were infected with lentiviral vectors containing LINGO-1 shRNA sequence or a scrambled control and transplanted into SCI mice. Tuj-1- and GFAP-positive cells were assessed by immunofluorescence staining. Wnt5a, p-JNK, JNK, and β-catenin expression was determined by Western blot and RT-qPCR. miRNAs were sequenced to detect changes in miRNA expression. Motor function was evaluated 0–35 days post-surgery by means of the Basso Mouse Scale (BMS) and by the rotarod performance test. Results We discovered that LINGO-1 shRNA increased neuronal differentiation of sp-NSPCs while decreasing astrocyte differentiation. These effects were accompanied by elevated Wnt5a protein expression, but unexpectedly, no changes in Wnt5a mRNA levels. miRNA-sequence analysis demonstrated that miR-15b-3p was a downstream mediator of LINGO-1 which suppressed Wnt5a expression. Transplantation of LINGO-1 shRNA-treated sp-NSPCs into SCI mice promoted neural differentiation, wound compaction, and motor function recovery. Conclusions LINGO-1 shRNA promotes neural differentiation of sp-NSPCs and Wnt5a expression, probably by downregulating miR-15b-3p. Transplantation of LINGO-1 shRNA-treated NSPCs promotes recovery of motor function after SCI, highlighting its potential as a target for SCI treatment.

A new Cu(II) complex, [CuL2(H2O)2]·H2O (HL = N-nicotinoylglycine), has been obtained using N-nicotinoylglycine, copper(II) acetate monohydrate and NaOH as raw materials. The structure of the Cu(II) complex was characterized by elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Cu(II) ion is six-coordinated with two N atoms from two pyridine groups of L ligand and four O atoms of four coordinated H2O molecules. The Cu(II) complex forms a 2D layered structure and 3D network structure by the interaction of O-H···O hydrogen bonds. The catalytic activities of the Cu(II) complex catalyst for benzyl alcohol oxidation were determined with molecular oxygen as oxidant.

Line-structured light calibration is an important step in the process of the visual measurement of structured light, and in the calibration process, the light plane equation is fitted by the camera coordinates of the data points on the light plane. There is error in solving the spatial coordinates of the data points, and the existing methods generally cannot effectively find the deviation points in the fitted data points, which leads to deviation when solving the parameters of the light plane equation. To correct the error caused by the deviation point in the calibration, this paper established a calibration method based on geometric constraints. In the method, the first constraint was that all fit points involved in the fitting had a certain consistency, and a part of the error points could be filtered by the distance from the data point to the light plane. In order to further improve the calibration accuracy, the laser was moved on a linear guide, the optimized objective function was established by the second geometric constraint, and the constraint was the relationship that the light plane at each position was parallel. In the experiment, a high-precision gauge block was used as the measured object, and the measurement results could be obtained. The calibration method can improve the calibration accuracy according to the experimental results.

This paper is concerned with the design of reconfigurable antennas based on pure water. Being a transparent, flexible, and readily available liquid, pure water can form a cylindrical stream that can be used to guide a leaky electromagnetic wave. By properly selecting the attenuation and phase constants of the leaky electromagnetic wave, the radiation characteristics of water antennas can be designed to suit different application requirements. By controlling the flow or size and shape of water, one can readily realize reconfigurable antennas of different operating frequencies, radiation patterns, and polarizations. Three novel antennas based on pure water are presented showing both simulated and measured results for their radiation performance. Topics that are worthwhile investigating in the future are also suggested.

We aim to explore the impact of economic agglomeration on the development of green total-factor productivity (GTFP) from both theoretical and empirical levels. We use the non-radial directional distance function method to formulate the GTFP index and further empirically study the impact of economic agglomeration on GTFP. The results indicate that: 1) there is a “U-shaped” curve relationship between economic agglomeration and GTFP, and the formation mechanism is that the economic agglomeration has a threshold effect on the agglomeration externalities such as infrastructure sharing, knowledge spillover, and labor market upgrading. 2) The mismatch of industrial structure is an important reason that the economic agglomeration in this region has not produced an obvious spatial spillover effect on other regions; relaxing restrictions on the concentration of economic activity to regional centers would contribute to the improvement of GTFP. 3) GTFP has the classic “snowball effect” in the time dimension but has the obvious “warning effect” in the space and time dimension. The conclusions of the research show that it is necessary to conform to the redistribution of economic geography, promote the rational allocation of human resources in the territorial space, and promote the coordination of economic agglomeration and green economic development goals.

Abstract Background We assessed the image quality of endometrial cancer lesions by readout segmentation of long variable echo-trains (RESOLVE) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) compared with that by single-shot echo-planar imaging (SS-EPI) DWI, aimed to explore the value of RESOLVE DWI for determining myometrial invasion and clinical stage in endometrial cancer. Materials and methods From April 2017 to March 2018, a total of 30 endometrial cancer patients (mean age 52.8 ± 9.0 years), who had undergone RESOLVE DWI and SS-EPI DWI, were included in the study. The image quality of endometrial carcinoma by two kinds of DWI scanning methods was compared qualitatively and quantitatively. The Spearman rank correlation test was used to assess the correlation of qualitative image quality scores between two readers. The accuracy of two DWI methods in detecting myometrial invasion and staging of endometrial carcinoma was calculated according to postoperative pathological results. The indexes were analyzed including sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV). A novel short backfire antenna realized by replacing the metallic wall with water wall is described in this paper. Through controlling the water flow in different layers, the proposed short backfire antenna based on a cylindrical waveguide made of water can switch between two different functions. When the proposed antenna works in Function I, it is a short backfire antenna with pencil beam. When it operates in the other function, conical beam is achieved, and its beam angle can be changed by controlling the height of water cylinder and water wall. A talented endophytic bacteria strain YINM00001, which showed strong antimicrobial activity and multiple antibiotic resistances, was isolated from a Chinese medicinal herb Peperomia dindygulensis Miq. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences demonstrated that strain was closely related to Streptomyces anulatus NRRL B-2000T (99.93%). The complete genome of strain YINM00001 was sequenced. The RAxML phylogenomic tree also revealed that strain YINM00001 was steadily clustered on a branch with strain Streptomyces anulatus NRRL B-2000T under the 100 bootstrap values. The complete genome of strain YINM00001 consists of an 8,372,992 bp linear chromosome (71.72 mol% GC content) and a 317,781 bp circular plasmid (69.14 mol% GC content). Genome mining and OSMAC approach were carried out to investigate the biosynthetic potential of producing secondary metabolites. Fifty-two putative biosynthetic gene clusters of secondary metabolites were found, including the putative cycloheximide, dinactin, warkmycin, and anthracimycin biosynthetic gene clusters which consist with the strong antifungal and antibacterial activities exhibited by strain YINM00001. Two new compounds, peperodione (1) and peperophthalene (2), and 17 known compounds were isolated from different fermentation broth. Large amounts and high diversity of antimicrobial and/or anticancer compounds cycloheximide, dinactin, anthracimycin, and their analogs had been found as predicted before, which highlights strain YINM00001 as an ideal candidate for further biosynthetic studies and production improvement of these valuable compounds. Meanwhile, several gene clusters that were highly conserved in several sequenced actinomycetes but significantly different from known gene clusters might be silent under proceeding fermentation conditions. Further studies, such as heterologous expression and genetic modification, are needed to explore more novel compounds from this talented endophytic Streptomyces strain.

Two extraction methods of accelerate solvent extraction (ASE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) were used to the extraction of trimethyl lead (TML) and triethyl lead (TEL), which were detected by gas chromatographer coupled with mass spectrometry. Sodium tetrapropylborate, as the derivatization reagent, was applied for the detection of gas chromatography. The recovery rate of ASE were about 88.2% (TML) and 86.4% (TEL) with 15 min consuming. The recovery rate of SFE were about 93.7% (TML) and 94.1% (TEL) with 40 min consuming. Two extraction methods of ASE and SFE were optimized, which were also analyzed in recovery, repeatability, accuracy, limit of detection (LOD) and other aspect. Both ASE and SFE exhibited rational recovery efficiency. The established methods were also applied to the real soil samples. SFE had better extraction effect according to time consumption, recovery rate, LOD and accuracy. However, ASE had more advantages in automated extraction, which could be applied to the pretreatment of large amounts of samples.

A novel actinobacterium, strain YIM 96748T, was isolated from a saline soil sample collected from the south bank of Aiding Lake in Xinjiang Province, Northwest China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain YIM 96748T is closely related to Amycolatopsis cihanbeyliensis BNT52T (98.9%) and Amycolatopsis jiangsuensis KLBMP 1262T (97.2%). The DNA–DNA relatedness between strain YIM 96748T and its closest type strain A. cihanbeyliensis BNT52T was 59.6%. The average nucleotide identity between strain YIM 96748T and its neighbor strain was 88.97%. Based on the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, it is concluded that strain YIM 96748T represents a novel species of the genus Amycolatopsis, whose name was proposed as Amycolatopsis aidingensis sp. nov. The type strain is YIM 96748T. To investigate the biosynthetic potential of producing secondary metabolites, the complete genome of YIM 96748T was sequenced and analyzed. The complete genome sequence of YIM 96748T consists of a 7,657,695-bp circular chromosome, comprising 7,162 predicted genes with a DNA G + C content of 70.21 mol%. Fifty-one putative biosynthetic gene clusters of secondary metabolites were found, including the antibacterial/antitumor agent TLN-05220, the antibacterial agent nocardicin A, the antifungal agent nystatin A1, and the osmolyte ectoine. The investigation of the secondary metabolites of A. aidingensis YIM96748T led to the discovery of two new phenylpropyl acetate enantiomers, amycoletates A (1) and B (2), and five known compounds: 4-hydroxy phenethyl acetate (3), 2-p-acetoxyphenylethanol (4), (S)-ethyl indole-3-lactate (5), (R)-ethyl indole-3-lactate (6), and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (7). One of the gene clusters 14, 36, and 43, which contain a single module of polyketide synthase, might be responsible for the biosynthesis of compounds 1 and 2 from compound 7 as a precursor. Further studies, including the one strain many compounds approach (OSMAC) and genetic modification, are needed to explore novel compounds from this talented halophilic Amycolatopsis strain.

The reference value of the oil film thickness and friction coefficient of the slipper pair is critical to the development of the piston pump, especially for 750 mL/r displacement piston pumps. To explore the computing method and range of the reference value mentioned applicable to 750 mL/r displacement piston pumps, this study aims to propose the modified calculation model of the oil film thickness based on the real clearance flowrate and obtain the value range of the friction coefficient of the slipper pair. Through the friction test of the slipper pair, the mean deviation ratio of the oil film thickness between the modified value, theoretical value, and the measured value was calculated and compared, respectively. The variation law of the friction under the influence of different speeds and working pressures was analyzed. Finally, the range of the equivalent friction coefficient with the upper and lower limit surfaces was obtained. The results show that the mean deviation ratio between the modified oil film thickness value and the measured value is mainly within 6%, while that of the theoretical method is mainly from 6% to 8%, and the mean of the difference between the two deviation ratios is about 3%, verifying the feasibility of the modified model used for the calculation of the reference value. Meanwhile, the value of the equivalent friction coefficient fluctuates in the range of 0.006–0.018, which is affected more significantly by the working pressure than the speed, suggesting that the working pressure can be given priority as the design basis of the friction coefficient for 750 mL/r displacement piston pumps.

Genetic testing has uncovered rare variants in complement proteins associated with thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) and C3 glomerulopathy (C3G). Approximately 50% are classified as variants of uncertain significance (VUS). Clinical risk assessment of patients carrying a VUS remains challenging primarily due to a lack of functional information, especially in the context of multiple confounding factors in the setting of kidney transplantation. Our objective was to evaluate the clinicopathologic significance of genetic variants in TMA and C3G in a kidney transplant cohort. We used whole exome next-generation sequencing to analyze complement genes in 76 patients, comprising 60 patients with a TMA and 16 with C3G. Ten variants in complement factor H (CFH) were identified; of these, four were known to be pathogenic, one was likely benign and five were classified as a VUS (I372V, I453L, G918E, T956M, L1207I). Each VUS was subjected to a structural analysis and was recombinantly produced; if expressed, its function was then characterized relative to the wild-type (WT) protein. Our data indicate that I372V, I453L, and G918E were deleterious while T956M and L1207I demonstrated normal functional activity. Four common polymorphisms in CFH (E936D, N1050Y, I1059T, Q1143E) were also characterized. We also assessed a family with a pathogenic variant in membrane cofactor protein (MCP) in addition to CFH with a unique clinical presentation featuring valvular dysfunction. Our analyses helped to determine disease etiology and defined the recurrence risk after kidney transplant, thereby facilitating clinical decision making for our patients. This work further illustrates the limitations of the prediction models and highlights the importance of conducting functional analysis of genetic variants particularly in a complex clinicopathologic scenario such as kidney transplantation.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) contribute to the cancer initiation, metastasis and drug resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Herein, we identified a miR-221/222 cluster as a novel regulator of CSCs in NSCLC. Targeted overexpression or knockdown of miR-221/222 in NSCLC cells revealed the essential roles of miR-221/222 in regulation of lung cancer cell proliferation, mammosphere formation, subpopulation of CD133+ CSCs and the expression of stemness genes including OCT4, NANOG and h-TERT. The in vivo animal study showed that overexpression of miR-221/222 significantly enhanced the capacity of lung cancer cells to develop tumor and grow faster, indicating the importance of miR-221/222 in tumorigenesis and tumor growth. Mechanistically, Reck was found to be a key direct target gene of miR-221/222 in NSCLC. Overexpression of miR-221/222 significantly suppressed Reck expression, activated Notch1 signaling and increased the level of NICD. As an activated form of Notch1, NICD leads to enhanced stemness in NSCLC cells. In addition, knockdown of Reck by siRNA not only mimicked miR-221/222 effects, but also demonstrated involvement of Reck in the miR-221/222-induced activation of Notch1 signaling, verifying the essential roles of the miR-221/222-Reck-Notch1 axis in regulating stemness of NSCLC cells. These findings uncover a novel mechanism by which lung CSCs are significantly manipulated by miR-221/222, and provide a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of NSCLC.

In patients with dense breasts or at high risk of breast cancer, dynamic contrast enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) is a highly sensitive diagnostic tool. However, its specificity is highly variable and sometimes low; quantitative measurements of contrast uptake parameters may improve specificity and mitigate this issue. To improve diagnostic accuracy, data need to be captured at high spatial and temporal resolution. While many methods exist to accelerate MRI temporal resolution, not all are optimized to capture breast DCE-MRI dynamics. We propose a novel, flexible, and powerful framework for the reconstruction of highly-undersampled DCE-MRI data: enhancement-constrained acceleration (ECA). Enhancement-constrained acceleration uses an assumption of smooth enhancement at small time-scale to estimate points of smooth enhancement curves in small time intervals at each voxel. This method is tested in silico with physiologically realistic virtual phantoms, simulating state-of-the-art ultrafast acquisitions at 3.5s temporal resolution reconstructed at 0.25s temporal resolution (demo code available here). Virtual phantoms were developed from real patient data and parametrized in continuous time with arterial input function (AIF) models and lesion enhancement functions. Enhancement-constrained acceleration was compared to standard ultrafast reconstruction in estimating the bolus arrival time and initial slope of enhancement from reconstructed images. We found that the ECA method reconstructed images at 0.25s temporal resolution with no significant loss in image fidelity, a 4x reduction in the error of bolus arrival time estimation in lesions (p < 0.01) and 11x error reduction in blood vessels (p < 0.01). Our results suggest that ECA is a powerful and versatile tool for breast DCE-MRI.

Abstract Knowledge of changes associated with the progression of growth‐related characteristics in rice plant is essential to make strategies for future breeding and crop management. However, thus far, little attention has been given to the identification of temporal changes of the traits concomitant with the year of release in rice genetic breeding. The objective of this study was to explore genetic gain for yield accrued in association with evolution of the growth phenotypes in a 2‐year field experiment conducted on the Yangtze River Basin of China. Fifteen rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, including 5 super high‐yielding rice, bred or widely cultivated from 1936 to 2005, were grown in irrigated field conditions with appropriate doses of commercial fertilizers during the rice‐growing season from May to October in 2013 and 2014. In both years, SPAD reading was high during vegetative and early grain filling stages, but it declined sharply at maturity. In general, SPAD reading increased with the progression in year of release of the cultivars and it correlated with yield benefit accrued. Similar to SPAD, the evolutionary trend also accounted for significant increases in LAI (leaf area index) and SLW (specific leaf weight), CGR (crop growth rate), LAD (leaf area duration), S/LA (spikelets/leaf area), and NAR (net assimilation rate). All growth parameters, except NAR, correlated positively with grain yield. Conversely, K (extinction coefficient) exhibited significant decline along with year of release, meaning more erect canopies. Gain of SLW in the newer cultivars enabled better light energy interception probably with higher RUE, which associated with increased SPAD amounting to low K values. It was opined that the reduced K improved light distribution across the leaves, which contributed to a grain yield advantage through increase of sink size (S/LA) over the 70‐year period.

Spontaneous extrusion of the distal catheter from the umbilicus following a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) for the treatment of hydrocephalus is an extremely rare complication. Here, we describe an 8-years-old boy who underwent a VPS for communicating hydrocephalus and thereafter the distal part of the catheter was extruded through the umbilicus. The extrusive part of the peritoneal catheter was successfully cut off with a laparoscope, keeping the remaining catheter in place and functional. The subsequent recovery process was uneventful. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of using laparoscopy to cut the protruding part and replace the shunt end. By keeping the function of the original shunt pipe, this case report offers an innovative and informative approach to treating this complication.

Background/Aims: This study aims to explore the effects of microRNA-214-5p (miR-214-5p) on the invasion and migration of Hepatocellular Carcinoma cells (HCC). Methods: Hepatocellular Carcinoma tissues and adjacent normal tissues from 44 hepatocellular carcinoma patients were prepared for this study. The HepG2 and BEL-7402 cells were transfected with miR-214-5p mimic and inhibitor. qRT-PCR was performed to detect the expressions of miR-214-5p. Transwell assays were used to detect the invasion and migration assays in HepG2 and BEL-7402 cells. A dual-luciferase reporter assay was conducted to examine the effect of miR-214-5p on Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Like (WASL/ N-WASP). Western blot and qRT-PCR were used to measure the expressions of the E-cadherin, N-cadherin and Vimentin proteins. Transwell chamber assays were performed to detect cell invasion and migration. Results: Compared with normal tissues, HCC tissues demonstrated significantly lower expression of miR-214-5p. Overexpression of miR-214-5p significantly inhibited the migration and invasion of HCC cells and inhibition of miR-214-5p promoted the migration and invasion. Additionally, miR-214-5p suppressed the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Further study showed WASL was a putative target gene of miR-214-5p. Up-regulating the expression of WASL could reverse the inhibition effect of miR-214-5p on invasion and migration. Conclusion: Our data suggested that miR-214-5p inhibited the invasion and migration of HepG2 and BEL-7402 by targeting WASL in Hepatocellular carcinoma.

Electrochemically synthesized nanosphere, nanorod and nanotube Fe2(MoO4)3 at optimized temperature and current density are characterized with XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS. Crystal lattices of the three types Fe2(MoO4)3 detected by HRTEM are well matched with the simulation analysis results from Materials Studio 6.0 based on the inorganic crystal structure database (ICSD) data and the modified XRD lattice parameters. The ratios of Fe/Mo on the surface resulted from XPS analysis are 1.47, 1.63 and 2.22 respectively for nanosphere, nanorod and nanotube. The mixture of Fe2(MoO4)3 with polytetrafluoroethylene dispersion are coated on glass carbon substrate as electrode for electrocatalytic performance test by cyclic voltammetries in 0.1 mol/L KOH and 1 mol/L methanol electrolyte. Methanol oxidation peak current density of the Nanotube- Fe2(MoO4)3/GCEs electrode is 3.27 mA/cm2 higher than 2.8 mA/cm2 of platinum foil electrode, which shows enhanced catalytic activity of Nanotube-Fe2(MoO4)3/GCEs. The cyclic stability in terms of peak current retention are 91%, 92% and 88% respectively for Nanosphere-Fe2(MoO4)3/GCE, Nanorod-Fe2(MoO4)3/GCE and Nanotube-Fe2(MoO4)3/GCE electrode after 220 cycles. It is concluded that nanosized Fe2(MoO4)3 could be promising alternative non-noble electro-catalysts for electro-oxidation of methanol in alkaline medium.

Planar motion mechanism (PMM) tests provide a means of obtaining the hydrodynamic derivatives needed to assess ship maneuverability properties. In this paper, the self-developed computational fluid dynamic (CFD) solver based on the open source code platform OpenFOAM, naoe-FOAM-SJTU, associated with the overset grid method is used to simulate the complex viscous flow field of PMM tests for a benchmark model Yupeng Ship. This paper discusses the effect of several parameters such as the drift angle and period on the hydrodynamic performance of the ship and compares the time histories of the predicted forces and moments with experimental data. To investigate the complex viscous flows with a large separation, four vortex identification methods are used to capture the vortex structures. The results show that the forces and moments are in good agreement in static drift and dynamic tests. By comparing the vortex structures, it is found that the third generation vortex identification methods, OmegaR and Liutex, are able to more accurately capture the vortex structures. The paper concludes that the present numerical scheme is reliable and the third generation vortex identification methods are more suitable for displaying the vortex structures in a complex viscous flow field.

Pitaya contains various types of polyphenols, flavonoid and vitamins which are beneficial for health and it is among the most important commercial tropical fruits worldwide. Endophytic bacteria might be beneficial for plant growth and yield. However, bacterial diversity in pitaya is poorly characterized. In this study, fruits of white and red pitayas from three different origins (Thailand, Vietnam and China) were chosen for endophytic bacteria diversity investigation by using Illumina HiSeq second-generation high-throughput sequencing technology. Large number of endophytic bacteria were detected and 22 phyla, 56 classes, 81 orders, 122 families and 159 genera were identified. Endophytic bacteria diversity was uneven among pitaya fruits from different origins and bacteria structure was different between white pitaya group and red pitaya group. Phylum Bacteroidetes, classes Bacteroidia and Coriobacteriia, orders Bacteroidales and Coriobacteriales, families Prevotellaceae, Bacteroidaceae, Ruminococcaceae, Paraprevotellaceae, Rikenellaceae, Alcaligenaceae and Coriobacteriaceae, genera Prevotella, Bacteroides, Roseburia, Faecalibacterium and Sutterella were statistically significant different species (P < 0.05) between white and red pitayas. These findings might be useful for growth improvement, fruit preservation and processing of different pitaya species from different origins.

When a planing boat sails at the free surface, the posture changes drastically with time, so the surface piercing propellers usually work in oblique flow. In this paper, numerical simulations are performed to predict the performance of PSP-841B with Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier−Stokes (URANS) method coupling with sliding mesh and volume of fluid (VOF) method. The results show that the predicted thrust and torque coefficients of PSP-841B are in good agreement with the experimental data. It proves the present numerical schemes are feasible and validated. These schemes are applied in the simulations of SPP-1 that is installed to a planing craft. In oblique flow, the ventilation volume of SPP-1 increases dramatically, resulting in the postponed transition of vented status that changes from the fully dry to partially wetted; at the low advance ratios, the thrust and torque coefficients are less than that in the horizontal case. As the advance speed increases, the vented mode of SPP-1 varies from full ventilation to partially wet, and the forces and moments get closer to the results in the horizontal flow. In addition, the blockage effect of air cavity to the inflow in oblique flow is more significant than the results in the horizontal case.

When operated under large water immersion, surface piercing propellers are prone to be in heavy load conditions. To improve the hydrodynamic performance of the surface piercing propellers, engineers usually artificially ventilate the blades by equipping a vent pipe in front of the propeller disc. In this paper, the influence of artificial ventilation on the hydrodynamic performance of surface piercing propellers under full immersion conditions was investigated using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. The numerical results suggest that the effect of artificial ventilation on the pressure distribution on the blades decreases along the radial direction. And at low advancing speed, the thrust, torque as well as the efficiency of the propeller are smaller than those without ventilation. However, with the increase of the advancing speed, the efficiency of the propeller rapidly increases and can be greater than the without-ventilation case. The numerical results demonstrates the effectiveness of the artificial ventilation approach for improving the hydrodynamic performance of the surface piercing propellers for high speed planning crafts.
