Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a common psychiatric disorder that has a complex pathological mechanism. During the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, patients with SCZ had substantially higher rates of infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, as well as higher COVID-19 mortality relative to patients with other mental disorders. However, the reasons for these increased rates in patients with SCZ remain unknown. In this review, we hypothesize that certain molecular pathways exhibit abnormal function in both COVID-19 and SCZ, with a focus on those related to energy metabolism dysregulation, immune system disruption, and abnormalities of the central nervous system. We review that dysregulation of energy metabolism can result in disruptions to the immune system and abnormalities within the central nervous system (CNS). Furthermore, immune system disturbances may also contribute to CNS abnormalities in both SCZ and COVID-19. We also discuss macro-factors associated with the high infection and mortality rates of COVID-19 in patients with SCZ, including sociodemographic factors, reduced access to psychiatric healthcare, structural barriers to COVID-19 vaccination, and proposed approaches to mitigate these macro-factors.

Acquired hypothalamic obesity (HO) is a rare type of obesity caused by acquired disease-related and/or treatment-related damage to the hypothalamus, most commonly craniopharyngiomas. Effective management of HO is critical due to its significant impact on quality of life and resistance to conventional treatments. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the 12-month, 24-month and 60-month outcomes of bariatric surgery for HO caused by CPs compared with patients with common obesity (CO). Relevant studies were identified in MEDLINE and EMBASE databases until May 2024. A total of four matched case-control studies were included. The results indicated that bariatric surgery significantly reduced weight in patients with HO (22.98 ± 14.22/21.47 ± 9.61/19.07 ± 16.12% total weight loss, 12/24/60 months after surgery), but the effect was significantly less than that in CO controls (−6.17/−6.41/−7.72% total weight loss 12/24/60 months after surgery). Bariatric surgery can significantly reduce body weight in craniopharyngiomas-related HO, but the effect is less than that in matched patients with common obesity. Further studies are necessary to determine the best surgical or multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of acquired HO.

Abstract Bletilla striata has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat a variety of health diseases. Currently, metabolic causes of differences in medicinal values are unknown, due to the lack of a large-scale and comprehensive investigation of metabolites in Bletilla species. In order to gain a better understanding of the major chemical constituents responsible for the medicinal value, this study aimed to explore the metabolomic differences among three Bletilla species (Bletilla striata: Bs, Bletilla ochracea: Bo and Bletilla formosana: Bf). There were 258 different metabolites between ‘Bo’ and ‘Bf’, the contents of 109 metabolites had higher abundance, while 149 metabolites showed less accumulation. There were 165 different metabolites between the ‘Bs’ and ‘Bf’, content of 72 metabolites was increased and content of 93 metabolites was decreased. There were 239 different metabolites between the ‘Bs’ and ‘Bo’, content of 145 metabolites was increased and content of 94 metabolites was decreased. In the Bo_vs_Bf, Bs_vs_Bf and Bs_vs_Bo groups, the major differential categories were flavonoids, phenolic acids, organic acids and alkaloids. Moreover, the differential metabolites were clustered into clear and distinct profiles via K-means analysis. In addition, the major differential categories were flavonoids, phenolic acids, organic acids and alkaloids. The ‘Flavonoid biosynthesis’ (ko00941) and ‘Phenylalanine metabolism’ (ko00360) pathways were significantly enriched in Bo_vs_Bf, Bs_vs_Bf and Bs_vs_Bo comparisons. These results clarify the metabolomics in different Bletilla species, as well as providing basis for the phamaceutical value of novel species of Bletilla.

Abstract Background The Mediterranean diet (MD) has shown promising results in preventing type 2 diabetes, particularly in Mediterranean and European populations. However, the applicability of these benefits to non-Mediterranean populations is unclear, with contradictory findings in the literature. Methods In this study, we included 12,575 participants without diabetes at baseline from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). Dietary intake was measured by three consecutive 24-h dietary recalls. The Mediterranean diet adherence (MDA) was measured by a score scale that included nine components of vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, cereals, fish, red meat, dairy products, and alcohol. New-onset diabetes was defined as self-reported physician-diagnosed diabetes during the follow-up. Results During a median follow-up of 9.0 years, 445 (3.5%) subjects developed diabetes. Overall, there was an inverse association between the MDA score and new-onset diabetes (per score increment, HR 0.83, 95% CI 0.76–0.90). Habitat-specific thermal responses are well documented in various organisms and likely determine the vulnerability of populations to climate change. However, the underlying roles of genetics and plasticity that shape such habitat-specific patterns are rarely investigated together. Here we examined the thermal plasticity of the butterfly Bicyclus dorothea originating from rainforest and ecotone habitats in Cameroon under common garden conditions. We also sampled wild-caught butterflies from forest and ecotone sites and used RADseq to explore genome-wide population differentiation. We found differences in the level of phenotypic plasticity across habitats. Specifically, ecotone populations exhibited greater sensitivity in wing eyespot features with variable development temperatures relative to rainforest populations. Known adaptive roles of wing eyespots in Bicyclus species suggest that this morphological plasticity is likely under divergent selection across environmental gradients. However, we found no distinct population structure of genome-wide variation between habitats, suggesting high level of ongoing gene flow between habitats is homogenizing most parts of the genome.

Pseudallenes A and B (1 and 2), the new and rare examples of sulfur-containing ovalicin derivatives, along with three known analogues 3–5, were isolated and identified from the culture extract of Pseudallescheria boydii CS-793, a fungus obtained from the deep-sea cold seep sediments. Their structures were established by detailed interpretation of NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric data. X-ray crystallographic analysis confirmed and established the structures and absolute configurations of compounds 1–3, thus providing the first characterized crystal structure of an ovalicin-type sesquiterpenoid. In the antimicrobial assays, compounds 1–3 showed broad-spectrum inhibitory activities against several plant pathogens with MIC values ranging from 2 to 16 μg/mL.

The genus Quercus, which emerged ∼55 million years ago during globally warm temperatures, diversified into ∼450 extant species. We present a high-quality de novo genome assembly of a California endemic oak, Quercus lobata, revealing features consistent with oak evolutionary success. Effective population size remained large throughout history despite declining since early Miocene. Analysis of 39,373 mapped protein-coding genes outlined copious duplications consistent with genetic and phenotypic diversity, both by retention of genes created during the ancient γ whole genome hexaploid duplication event and by tandem duplication within families, including numerous resistance genes and a very large block of duplicated DUF247 genes, which have been found to be associated with self-incompatibility in grasses. An additional surprising finding is that subcontext-specific patterns of DNA methylation associated with transposable elements reveal broadly-distributed heterochromatin in intergenic regions, similar to grasses. Collectively, these features promote genetic and phenotypic variation that would facilitate adaptability to changing environments.

Preserving biodiversity under rapidly changing climate conditions is challenging. One approach for estimating impacts and their magnitude is to model current relationships between genomic and environmental data and then to forecast those relationships under future climate scenarios. In this way, understanding future genomic and environmental relationships can help guide management decisions, such as where to establish new protected areas where populations might be buffered from high temperatures or major changes in rainfall. However, climate warming is only one of many anthropogenic threats one must consider in rapidly developing parts of the world. In Central Africa, deforestation, mining, and infrastructure development are accelerating population declines of rainforest species. Here we investigate multiple anthropogenic threats in a Central African rainforest songbird, the little greenbul (Andropadus virens). We examine current climate and genomic variation in order to explore the association between genome and environment under future climate conditions. Specifically, we estimate Genomic Vulnerability, defined as the mismatch between current and predicted future genomic variation based on genotype-environment relationships modeled across contemporary populations. We do so while considering other anthropogenic impacts. We find that coastal and central Cameroon populations will require the greatest shifts in adaptive genomic variation, because both climate and land use in these areas are predicted to change dramatically. In contrast, in the more northern forest-savanna ecotones, genomic shifts required to keep pace with climate will be more moderate, and other anthropogenic impacts are expected to be comparatively low in magnitude. While an analysis of diverse taxa will be necessary for making comprehensive conservation decisions, the species-specific results presented illustrate how evolutionary genomics and other anthropogenic threats may be mapped and used to inform mitigation efforts. To this end, we present an integrated conceptual model demonstrating how the approach for a single species can be expanded to many taxonomically diverse species.

Quantifying and comparing the amount of adaptive evolution among different species is key to understanding how evolution works. Previous studies have shown differences in adaptive evolution across species; however, their specific causes remain elusive. Here, we use improved modeling of weakly deleterious mutations and the demographic history of the outgroup species and ancestral population and estimate that at least 20% of nonsynonymous substitutions between humans and an outgroup species were fixed by positive selection. This estimate is much higher than previous estimates, which did not correct for the sizes of the outgroup species and ancestral population. Next, we jointly estimate the proportion and selection coefficient (p + and s +, respectively) of newly arising beneficial nonsynonymous mutations in humans, mice, and Drosophila melanogaster by examining patterns of polymorphism and divergence. We develop a novel composite likelihood framework to test whether these parameters differ across species. Overall, we reject a model with the same p + and s + of beneficial mutations across species and estimate that humans have a higher p+s + compared with that of D. melanogaster and mice. We show that this result cannot be caused by biased gene conversion or hypermutable CpG sites. We discuss possible biological explanations that could generate the observed differences in the amount of adaptive evolution across species.

Predicting species' capacity to respond to climate change is an essential first step in developing effective conservation strategies. However, conservation prioritization schemes rarely take evolutionary potential into account. Ecotones provide important opportunities for diversifying selection and may thus constitute reservoirs of standing variation, increasing the capacity for future adaptation. Here, we map patterns of environmentally associated genomic and craniometric variation in the central African rodent Praomys misonnei to identify areas with the greatest turnover in genomic composition. We also project patterns of environmentally associated genomic variation under future climate change scenarios to determine where populations may be under the greatest pressure to adapt. While precipitation gradients influence both genomic and craniometric variation, vegetation structure is also an important determinant of craniometric variation. Areas of elevated environmentally associated genomic and craniometric variation overlap with zones of rapid ecological transition underlining their importance as reservoirs of evolutionary potential. We also find that populations in the Sanaga river basin, central Cameroon and coastal Gabon are likely to be under the greatest pressure from climate change. Lastly, we make specific conservation recommendations on how to protect zones of high evolutionary potential and identify areas where populations may be the most susceptible to climate change.

With the insertion a segment of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) inside the cavity, abundant dynamics of group velocity locked vector solitons (GVLVSs) in Er-doped fiber laser have been investigated by using graphene oxide/polyvinyl alcohol (GO/PVA) film as a saturable absorber (SA). The generated Kelly sidebands in emission spectra reveal peak-valley or valley-peak alternation and slightly shift in two orthogonal components, which are the characteristics of GVLVSs. Through proper adjustment of polarization controllers (PCs) inside the EDFLs cavity, versatile vector soliton dynamics such as polarization locked GVLVSs (PL-GVLVSs), polarization rotation GVLVSs (PR-GVLVSs), dual wavelength GVLVSs, bound state GVLVSs, bunch GVLVSs and harmonic mode-locking GVLVSs (HML-GVLVSs) have been observed. The separation between two emission peaks from the dual wavelength GVLVSs was controlled by the Lyot filter and related to the insertion length of PMF inside the cavity. Unlike PL-GVLVSs, the period-doubling phenomenon has been found in two orthogonal components of the PR-GVLVSs. Besides, the bound state GVLVSs were generated showing strongly modulated interference fringes in emission spectrum. For the bunch and HML GVLVSs, the number of solitons inside the cavity increased with the pump power, and it showed the quintuple solitons and the 7th HML-GVLVSs at the highest pump power.
