Abstract Cancer has emerged as a formidable challenge in the 21st century, impacting society, public health, and the economy. Conventional cancer treatments often exhibit limited efficacy and considerable side effects, particularly in managing the advanced stages of the disease. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), a contemporary non-invasive therapeutic approach, employs photosensitizers (PS) in conjunction with precise light wavelengths to selectively target diseased tissues, inducing the generation of reactive oxygen species and ultimately leading to cancer cell apoptosis. In contrast to conventional therapies, PDT presents a lower incidence of side effects and greater precision in targeting. The integration of intelligent nanotechnology into PDT has markedly improved its effectiveness, as evidenced by the remarkable synergistic antitumor effects observed with the utilization of multifunctional nanoplatforms in conjunction with PDT. This paper provides a concise overview of the principles underlying PS and PDT, while also delving into the utilization of nanomaterial-based PDT in the context of cancer treatment.

Abstract Nuclear lamin B1 (LMNB1) is a member of the nuclear lamin protein family. LMNB1 can maintain and ensure the stability of nuclear structure and influence the process of cell senescence by regulating chromatin distribution, DNA replication and transcription, gene expression, cell cycle, etc. In recent years, several studies have shown that the abnormal expression of LMNB1, a classical biomarker of cell senescence, is highly correlated with the progression of various malignant tumors; LMNB1 is therefore considered a new potential tumor marker and therapeutic target. However, the mechanism of action of LMNB1 is influenced by many factors, which are difficult to clarify at present. This article focuses on the recent progress in understanding the role of LMNB1 in cell senescence and malignant tumors and offers insights that could contribute to elucidating the mechanism of action of LMNB1 to provide a new direction for further research.

Background: The association between small-bowel adenocarcinoma (SBA) tumor size and prognosis is unclear, and we used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to assess the prognostic value of SBA tumor size. Methods: Patients with postoperative SBA were selected from the SEER database, and overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were used as outcome variables. Tumor size was used as a categorical and continuous variable, respectively, to adjust for confounders and analyze the association between SBA tumor size and prognosis using Cox proportional hazard regression, and the results were visualized using restricted cubic splines (RCS). Spearman correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the statistical correlation between tumor size and tumor invasion depth (T-stage). Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to estimate OS at different T stages. Results: When the tumor size was analyzed as a quantitative variable, the adjusted covariate model showed that the HR was 1.008 (P = 0.04) for OS and 1.021 (P = 0.03) for CSS. And regardless of OS or CSS, when the tumor size < 3–4 cm, there was a close linear relationship between tumor size and HR. Abstract Background The aim of this study was to conduct an in silico analysis of a novel compound heterozygous variant in breast cancer susceptibility gene 2 (BRCA2) to clarify its structure–function relationship and elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Methods A tumor biopsy sample was obtained from a 42-year-old Chinese woman during surgery, and a maxBRCA™ test was conducted using the patient’s whole blood. We obtained an experimentally determined 3D structure (1mje.pdb) of the BRCA2 protein from the Protein Data Bank (PDB) as a relatively reliable reference. Subsequently, the wild-type and mutant structures were predicted using SWISS-MODEL and AlphaFold, and the accuracy of these predictions was assessed through the SAVES online server. Furthermore, we utilized a high ambiguity-driven protein–protein docking (HADDOCK) algorithm and protein–ligand interaction profiler (PLIP) to predict the pathogenicity of the mutations and elucidate pathogenic mechanisms that potentially underlies TNBC. Results Histological examination revealed that the tumor biopsy sample exhibited classical pathological characteristics of TNBC. Furthermore, the maxBRCA™ test revealed two compound heterozygous BRCA2 gene mutations (c.7670 C > T.pA2557V and c.8356G > A.pA2786T). Through performing in silico structural analyses and constructing of 3D models of the mutants, we established that the mutant amino acids valine and threonine were located in the helical domain and oligonucleotide binding 1 (OB1), regions that interact with DSS1. Conclusion Our analysis revealed that substituting valine and threonine in the helical domain region alters the structure and function of BRCA2 proteins. This mutation potentially affects the binding of proteins and DNA fragments and disrupts interactions between the helical domain region and OB1 with DSS1, potentially leading to the development of TNBC. Our findings suggest that the identified compound heterozygous mutation contributes to the clinical presentation of TNBC, providing new insights into the pathogenesis of TNBC and the influence of compound heterozygous mutations in BRCA2.

Abstract Inflammasomes are thought to be important mediators of host defense against microbial pathogens and maintenance of gastrointestinal tract homeostasis. They can modulate caspase-1 to promote IL-18 and IL-1β secretion and promote phagocytosis induced by bacterial pathogens. NLRP3 is an inflammasome comprising a multiprotein complex assembled by pattern recognition receptors in the cell cytoplasm. It is a crucial component of the innate immune system. Dysregulation of NLRP3 may contribute to inflammatory diseases and intestinal cancers. Recent research suggests that NLRP3 plays an essential role in tumor development; therefore, intensive study of its mechanism is warranted as it could play a key role in the treatment of digestive system tumors. In this review, we discuss the mechanism and role of NLRP3 in tumors of the digestive system and response strategies to modulate NLRP3 for potential use in tumor treatment.

In this study, we investigate the underlying causes of drift in the time history curves of measured parameters obtained through strain electrical measurements and assess their impacts on load measurements. To address the challenge of efficiently processing large volumes of aircraft load data, we propose and analyze a multi-level parallel algorithm specifically designed for the data processing of aircraft load measurements. To achieve this objective, we discuss parallel processing at both medium- and fine-grained levels and develop two distinct parallel processing algorithms: one for coarse- and medium-grained aircraft-type data streams, and another for medium- and fine-grained takeoff and landing data streams. The efficacy of these algorithms is validated through the processing of load data measured on a specific aircraft wing. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach offers a novel technical pathway for large-scale scientific computations and enhances data processing efficiency in the domain of aircraft load spectrum analysis.

Through analysis of four aspects, including the distribution and production of global oil and gas fields, the distribution and changes of remaining recoverable reserves, the differences in oil and gas production between regions/countries, and the development potential of oil and gas fields with production capacity not built and to be built, this paper presents the situation and trends of global oil and gas development in 2022. It is found that, in 2022, oil and gas fields are widely distributed worldwide, and upstream production activities continue to recover; the oil and gas reserves decrease slightly year on year, and the oil and gas reserves in sea areas increase significantly; the oil and gas production increases continuously, and the key resource countries make a significant contribution in oil and gas production growth; the oil and gas fields with production capacity not built and to be built hold abundant reserves, and their development potential will be gradually released with the economic benefits increase. Further analysis is conducted from the perspectives of global oil and gas resources continuity, geopolitical risks, potential of international cooperation, and upgrade of unconventional oil and gas technology. Finally, in view of core business domains and strategies under the new situation, the Chinese oil companies are recommended to: (1) keep a foothold in onshore conventional oil and gas development by virtue of their comparative advantages and learning from other's experience in cooperation; (2) carry out pilot tests on development adjustment, and deepen the international cooperation in enhanced oil/gas recovery; (3) improve the oil and gas operation capabilities in sea areas to transform from follower as minority shareholder to joint venture and then to independent operations; and (4) seek appropriate ways for shale oil/gas development to reduce the dependence on foreign oil and gas.

ObjectiveThis study investigates the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a biophysical therapy for alleviating symptoms of functional bowel disorder (FBD) and associated psychological symptoms by targeting the brain-gut axis.MethodsWe conducted a comparative analysis involving 226 subjects, comprising the FBD group (n = 113) and a healthy control group (n = 113). Within the FBD group, participants were further divided into those who received rTMS therapy (FBD treatment group, n = 63) and those who did not (FBD control group, n = 50). The FBD treatment group was subcategorized based on the number of rTMS treatments received. We evaluated various factors, including gender, age, monthly household income, daily activity level, and sleep quality, as potential risk factors for FBD. Severity assessments of FBD and associated symptoms (constipation, anxiety, depression, and somatization disorders) were conducted using validated scales before and after treatment.ResultsOur findings revealed a higher incidence of FBD in women, with most cases emerging at age 50 or older. We identified lower monthly household income, reduced daily activity levels, and poorer sleep quality as factors associated with a higher likelihood of FBD. FBD patients exhibited higher scores for constipation, anxiety, depression, and somatization disorders compared to healthy controls. rTMS therapy was effective in reducing gastrointestinal symptoms, anxiety, depression, and somatization disorders among FBD patients. Notably, the extent of improvement was positively correlated with the number of rTMS sessions. No adverse effects were observed during the study.ConclusionOur study underscores the efficacy of biophysical therapy, specifically repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, in mitigating FBD symptoms and associated psychological distress. The treatment’s effectiveness is positively linked to the frequency of rTMS sessions.

Abstract Cilia are ubiquitous eukaryotic organelles responsible for cellular motility and sensory functions. The ciliary axoneme is a microtubule-based cytoskeleton consisting of two central singlets and nine outer doublet microtubules. Cryo-electron microscopy-based studies have revealed a complex network inside the lumen of both tubules composed of microtubule-inner proteins (MIPs). However, the functions of most MIPs remain unknown. Here, we present single-particle cryo-EM-based analyses of the Tetrahymena thermophila native doublet microtubule and identify 42 MIPs. These data shed light on the evolutionarily conserved and diversified roles of MIPs. In addition, we identified MIPs potentially responsible for the assembly and stability of the doublet outer junction. Knockout of the evolutionarily conserved outer junction component CFAP77 moderately diminishes Tetrahymena swimming speed and beat frequency, indicating the important role of CFAP77 and outer junction stability in cilia beating generation and/or regulation.

Abstract Background Bacterial viruses, phages, play a key role in nutrient turnover and lysis of bacteria in terrestrial ecosystems. While phages are abundant in soils, their effects on plant pathogens and rhizosphere bacterial communities are poorly understood. Here, we used metagenomics and direct experiments to causally test if differences in rhizosphere phage communities could explain variation in soil suppressiveness and bacterial wilt plant disease outcomes by plant-pathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum bacterium. Specifically, we tested two hypotheses: (1) that healthy plants are associated with stronger top-down pathogen control by R. solanacearum-specific phages (i.e. ‘primary phages’) and (2) that ‘secondary phages’ that target pathogen-inhibiting bacteria play a stronger role in diseased plant rhizosphere microbiomes by indirectly ‘helping’ the pathogen. Results Using a repeated sampling of tomato rhizosphere soil in the field, we show that healthy plants are associated with distinct phage communities that contain relatively higher abundances of R. solanacearum-specific phages that exert strong top-down pathogen density control. Moreover, ‘secondary phages’ that targeted pathogen-inhibiting bacteria were more abundant in the diseased plant microbiomes. The roles of R. solanacearum-specific and ‘secondary phages’ were directly validated in separate greenhouse experiments where we causally show that phages can reduce soil suppressiveness, both directly and indirectly, via top-down control of pathogen densities and by alleviating interference competition between pathogen-inhibiting bacteria and the pathogen. Conclusions Together, our findings demonstrate that soil suppressiveness, which is most often attributed to bacteria, could be driven by rhizosphere phage communities that regulate R. solanacearum densities and strength of interference competition with pathogen-suppressing bacteria. Rhizosphere phage communities are hence likely to be important in determining bacterial wilt disease outcomes and soil suppressiveness in agricultural fields. Video Abstract

Functional bowel disorder (FBD) is a common gastrointestinal disease syndrome characterized by dysmotility and secretion without known organic lesions. The pathogenesis of FBD is still unclear. In recent years, with the rise of neurogastroenterology, it has initially revealed its close relationship with the “brain-gut axis.” Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a technique for detecting and treating the nervous system, that is characterized by non-invasiveness and painlessness. TMS plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and provides a new method for the treatment of FBD. In this paper, we summarized and analyzed the research progress of using TMS therapy applied to patients with irritable bowel syndrome and functional constipation by domestic and foreign scholars in recent years by means of literature search, and found that TMS therapy could improve the intestinal discomfort and accompanying mental symptoms in patients with FBD.

Abstract Dry reforming of CH4 process can convert greenhouse gases into high‐value‐added fuels and chemicals with its broad application prospects in environmental protection and renewable energy. Non‐thermal plasma is considered an effective alternative method because it can activate CH4 and CO2 under low temperature and atmospheric pressure. This paper is aimed to optimize the plasma‐assisted dry reforming of CH4 process in a unipolar microsecond pulsed coaxial dielectric barrier discharge by investigating the effects of reactor structures. The results show that the conversions of reactants and the yields of syngas were significantly affected by the reactor structures. Specifically, a multi‐stage or foil external electrode and negative polar discharge could promote CH4 and CO2 conversions, gas product yields, and energy conversion efficiencies. For different electrodes, the maximal conversions of CH4 and CO2 were 20.4% and 14.1%, with an energy conversion efficiency of 4.4% under our experimental conditions. Higher conversions, yields, and energy conversion efficiencies were obtained with lower power input when applying heat insulation measures. CH4 conversion was promoted to 27.9% with a moderate energy conversion efficiency of 3.8%, but the conversion of CO2 was only 12% when packing materials into the reactor. The results can provide specific guidance for designing plasma or plasma‐catalytic dry reforming reactor.

Abstract Background Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZONs) are a type of nanomaterial that has presented anti-cancer properties in breast cancer (BC). However, the function of ABCC9 in BC and its correlation with ZONs are still elusive. Methods Here, we identified the crucial role of ABCC9 in modulating ferroptosis and doxorubicin (Dox) resistance in BC and the targeted function of ZONs to ABCC9. Results The silencing of ABCC9 significantly repressed the viability of BC cells. The knockdown of ABCC9 decreased the numbers of Edu-positive BC cells. Conversely, BC cell apoptosis was increased by the inhibition of ABCC9. Besides, the silencing of ABCC9 reduced the capability of migration and invasion of BC cells. Significantly, tumorigenicity analysis demonstrated that the tumor growth of BC cells was suppressed by the depletion of ABCC9 in the xenograft model of nude mice. Moreover, the treatment of ferroptosis activator erastin repressed cell viability of BC cells and ABCC9 overexpression rescued the repression. Similarly, the numbers of Edu-positive BC cells were inhibited by erastin and the overexpression of ABCC9 reversed the inhibitory effect of erastin. The levels of GSH were decreased and MDA, lipid ROS, and iron levels were increased by the treatment of erastin, while the ABCC9 overexpression could reverse these results in BC cells. Consistently, erastin suppressed the expression of ferroptosis inhibitory factors, including GPX4 and SLC7A11, in BC cells and the overexpression of ABCC9 rescued the expression. The IC50 value of Dox was reduced by the knockdown of ABCC9 in Dox-resistant BC cells (BC/Dox). The numbers of Edu-positive BC/Dox cells were attenuated by the depletion of ABCC9. Meanwhile, the apoptosis of BC/Dox cells was stimulated by the silencing of ABCC9. Furthermore, the treatment of ZONs attenuated Dox resistance of BC cells. ZONs remarkably repressed the expression of ABCC9 in BC/Dox cells. ZONs inhibited the cell viability of BC/Dox cells and the overexpression of ABCC9 reversed the repression. Moreover, the treatment of ZONs reduced GSH levels and enhanced MDA, lipid ROS, and iron levels in erastin-stimulated BC/Dox cells. Conclusions In conclusion, we discovered that the inhibition of ABCC9 by zinc oxide nanoparticles induces ferroptosis and attenuates Dox resistance in BC.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignant tumor in the world. CRC has high morbidity and mortality rates and it is a serious threat to human health. Ferroptosis is a unique form of iron-dependent oxidative cell death that is usually accompanied by iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Ferroptosis has attracted worldwide attention since it was first proposed. It plays an important role in the development of a variety of diseases, such as tumors, ischemia/reperfusion injury, nervous system diseases, and kidney damage, and it may serve as a new therapeutic target. This article reviews the mechanism of ferroptosis and the possibility to target ferroptosis pathways in CRC, providing new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of CRC.

Objective To investigate the relationship between preoperative proteinuria and postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). Methods We performed a search on databases included PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, from December 2009 to September 2020. Data extracted from eligible studies were synthesized to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). A fixed or random effects model was applied to calculate the pooled OR based on heterogeneity through the included studies. Results This meta-analysis of 11 observational studies included 203,987 participants, of whom 21,621 patients suffered from postoperative AKI and 182,366 patients did not suffer from postoperative AKI. The combined results demonstrated that preoperative proteinuria is an independent risk factor for postoperative AKI (adjusted OR = 1.65, 95%CI:1.44–1.89, p

Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) is a common pathophysiological process, which can occur in many conditions such as acute enteric ischemia, severe burns, small intestinal transplantation, etc,. Ischemia-reperfusion of the intestine is often accompanied by distal organ injury, especially liver injury. This paper outlined the signal pathways and cytokines involved in acute liver injury induced by intestinal I/R: the NF-κB Signaling Pathway, the P66shc Signaling Pathway, the HMGB1 Signaling Pathway, the Nrf2-ARE Signaling Pathway, the AMPK-SIRT-1 Signaling Pathway and other cytokines, providing new ideas for the prevention and treatment of liver injury caused by reperfusion after intestinal I/R.

Acute appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency in children. Despite the high incidence rate of appendicitis, it is sometimes misdiagnosed or missed. Complex appendicitis (CA) in children is characterized by a critical condition, several complications, and high mortality. Precision distinguishing between simple appendicitis and CA correctly is key to choosing appropriate treatment. A safe, cheap, rapid, extensive and accurate diagnostic marker of appendicitis will be of great significance for emergency general surgeons to treat suspected CA. Many studies have investigated possible diagnostic markers for the diagnosis of CA in children. In this study, studies related to CA in children in recent years are summarized, and the related markers and scoring system for the diagnosis of CA in children are summarized.

Atom probe tomography can image chemical composition at the nanoscale, but our understanding of how it images voids, or empty spaces, is still lacking. Here, the authors combine atom probe tomography, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and field-evaporation theory to show how voids are imaged and subsequently measured.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a manifestation of tissue or organ damage that is followed by ischemia and exacerbated by the return of blood flow to a previously damaged tissue or organ. The intestines are one of the most sensitive tissues and organs to I/R injury. Moreover, the adverse consequences of intestinal I/R (II/R) injury are not limited to the intestine itself and can also lead to damage of the distant tissues and organs. The mechanism of II/R is extremely complex and oxidative stress is the key link in the pathogenesis of II/R injury. This study summarizes the roles of oxidative stress and its signaling pathways involved in II/R. The signaling pathways that mitigate II/R injury include the nuclear factor erythroid-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-mediated signaling pathway, Wnt/β-catenin pathway, and phosphatidylinositol kinase 3 (PI3K)/Akt pathway; those that aggravate II/R injury include the Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway, Toll-like receptor (TLR) receptor-mediated signaling pathway, protein kinase CβII (PKCβII)/p66shc pathway, and microRNA (miRNA)/p66shc pathway; the effect of miRNA on related pathways and mitochondrial DNA translocation. The aforementioned pathways provide new ideas for further exploring the occurrence and development of II/R and more effective treatments for II/R injury.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver tumor. It is ranked the sixth most common neoplasm and the third most common cause of cancer mortality. At present, the most common treatment for HCC is surgery, but the 5-year recurrence rates are still high. Patients with early stage HCC with few nodules can be treated with resection or radiofrequency ablation (RFA); while for multinodular HCC, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) has been the first-line treatment. In recent years, based on medical engineering cooperation, nanotechnology has been increasingly applied to the treatment of cancer. Photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy are effective for cancer. This paper summarizes the latest progress of photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy for HCC, with the aim of providing new ideas for the treatment of HCC.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) is the most common autoimmune disease involving the thyroid gland. HT often clinically manifest as hypothyroidism due to the destruction of thyroid cells mediated by humoral and cellular immunity. The pathogenesis of HT is a complex process in which environmental factors, hereditary inclination, trace elements immune factors, cytokines, and DNA and miRNA all play an important role. Herein, we summarize the precision factors involved in the pathogenesis of HT and offer an update over the past 5 years to provide a theoretical basis for further investigation of the relevant targets for HT treatment.

BackgroundCombined hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma (CHC) is an uncommon subtype of primary liver cancer. Because of limited epidemiological data, prognostic risk factors and therapeutic strategies for patients with CHC tend to be individualized. This study aimed to identify independent prognostic factors and develop a nomogram-based model for predicting the overall survival (OS) of patients with CHC.MethodsWe recruited eligible individuals from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2004 and 2015 and randomly divided them into the training or verification cohort. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify independent variables associated with OS. Based on multivariate analysis, the nomogram was established, and its prediction performance was evaluated using the consistency index (C-index) and calibration curve.ResultsIn total, 271 patients with CHC were included in our study. The median OS was 14 months, and the 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates were 52.3%, 27.1%, and 23.3%, respectively. In the training cohort, multivariate analysis showed that the pathological grade (hazard ratio [HR], 1.26; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.96–1.66), TNM stage (HR, 1.21; 95% CI: 1.02 - 1.44), and surgery (HR, 0.26; 95% CI: 0.17 - 0.40) were independent indicators of OS. The nomogram-based model related C-indexes were 0.76 (95% CI: 0.72 - 0.81) and 0.72 (95% CI: 0.66 - 0.79) in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The calibration of the nomogram showed good consistency of 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates between the actual observed survival and predicted survival in both cohorts. The TNM stage (HR, 1.23; 95% CI: 1.01 - 1.49), and M stage (HR, 1.87; 95% CI: 1.14 3.05) were risk factors in the surgical treatment group. Surgical resection and liver transplantation could significantly prolong the survival, with no statistical difference observed.ConclusionsThe pathological grade, TNM stage, and surgery were independent prognostic factors for patients with CHC. We developed a nomogram model, in the form of a static nomogram or an online calculator, for predicting the OS of patients with CHC, with a good predictive performance.

Flash sintering has received wide attention lately due to its ultrafast densification process at low sintering temperature. However, the deformability of flash-sintered ceramics remains poorly understood. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was processed by flash sintering to study deformation mechanism. Transmission electron microscopy studies show that the flash-sintered YSZ contains ultrafine grains and dislocations. Strain rate jump tests at elevated temperature by in-situ microcompression indicate the existence of a large threshold stress. The activation energy of deformation is ∼145 kJ/mol, similar to the activation energy for oxygen vacancy migration. The deformation mechanisms of the flash-sintered YSZ at elevated temperatures are discussed.

Hyperspectral image-anomaly detection (HSI-AD) has become one of the research hotspots in the field of remote sensing. Because HSI’s features of integrating image and spectrum provide a considerable data basis for abnormal object detection, HSI-AD has a huge application potential in HSI analysis. It is difficult to effectively extract a large number of nonlinear features contained in HSI data using traditional machine learning methods, and deep learning has incomparable advantages in the extraction of nonlinear features. Therefore, deep learning has been widely used in HSI-AD and has shown excellent performance. This review systematically summarizes the related reference of HSI-AD based on deep learning and classifies the corresponding methods into performance comparisons. Specifically, we first introduce the characteristics of HSI-AD and the challenges faced by traditional methods and introduce the advantages of deep learning in dealing with these problems. Then, we systematically review and classify the corresponding methods of HSI-AD. Finally, the performance of the HSI-AD method based on deep learning is compared on several mainstream data sets, and the existing challenges are summarized. The main purpose of this article is to give a more comprehensive overview of the HSI-AD method to provide a reference for future research work.

Barium sulfate is widely used for gastroenterology imaging. Retention of barium in the appendix, where it acts as an appendicolith, thereby leading to obstruction and inflammation. Barium-associated appendicitis is a very rare complication of upper gastrointestinal imaging (UGI), especially in children. We present a case involving an 8-year-old girl who was diagnosed with acute appendicitis due to a barolith and required a laparoscopic appendectomy 6 weeks after UGI. After UGI, patients should be informed regarding possible retention of barium in the appendix, which can cause acute appendicitis. Then, a laparoscopic appendectomy was performed successfully. We should be cautious of this potential risk to prevent complications with early intervention in children.

Ectopic ovaries are a rare occurrence. A 33-year-old woman presented to our unit for evaluation of a 2-year history of sporadic abdominal pain that was becoming sharp and frequent. Computed tomography (CT) suggested a gastrointestinal tract mesenchymoma. An abdominal laparotomy was performed and the tumor was excised for pathologic evaluation. A rapid frozen section pathologic examination showed a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT). The final pathology report was an ectopic ovary with corpora lutea bleeding. Ectopic ovaries are benign and the present case is the first report involving an ectopic ovary mimicking a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). The patient recovered well after surgery. Maldevelopment of the genital tract can lead to ectopic ovaries and surgery is a good management choice. The present case provides a possible differential diagnosis for GISTs.

Precast concrete segmental bridges (PCSBs) have been widely used in bridge engineering due to their numerous competitive advantages. The structural behavior and health status of PCSBs largely depend on the performance of the joint between the assembled segments. However, due to construction errors and dynamic loading conditions, some cracks and leakages have been found at the epoxy joints of PCSBs during the construction or operation stage. These defects will affect the joint quality, negatively impacting the safety and durability of the bridge. A structural health monitoring (SHM) method using active sensing with a piezoceramic-based smart aggregate (SA) to detect the crack and leakage in the epoxy joint of PCSBs was proposed and the feasibility was studied by experiment in the present work. Two concrete prisms were prefabricated with installed SAs and assembled with epoxy joint. An initial defect was simulated by leaving a 3-cm crack at the center of the joint without epoxy. With a total of 13 test cases and the different lengths of cracks without water and filled with water were simulated and tested. Time-domain analysis, frequency-domain analysis and wavelet-packet-based energy index (WPEI) analysis were conducted to evaluate the health condition of the structure. By comparing the collected voltage signals, Power Spectrum Density (PSD) energy and WPEIs under different healthy states, it is shown that the test results are closely related to the length of the crack and the leakage in the epoxy joint. It is demonstrated that the devised approach has certain application value in detecting the crack and leakage in the joint of PCSBs.

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the outcome of a tissue-selecting therapy stapler (TST) for prolapsing hemorrhoids in HIV-infected patients. Sixty-two patients with stage III-IV hemorrhoidal prolapse were treated with TST by a single surgeon between June and November 2014. The TST group comprised 32 patients (4 females), and the TST + HIV group comprised 30 HIV-infected patients (3 females). Age, gender, and preoperative examination as well as intraoperative and postoperative features were assessed. There was no marked difference in hemorrhoidal prolapse between the TST and HIV + TST groups, except for patient satisfaction at 12 months. TST is an effective and safe technique for treatment of prolapsing hemorrhoids in HIV-infected patients.

To quantify the flood risks in cascade dam systems, it is critical to analyze the risk factors and potential breaking failure paths. In this study, Bayesian networks (BNs) were applied to create a flood risk analysis model for a cascade dam system. Expert experiment, historical data, and computational formulas were employed to estimate the prior probability and original conditional probability tables (CPTs) in the BN model; sensitivity analysis was used to ensure the original continuous breaking failure path in the system. To avoid the possible misperceptions of the probability of a certain event, Dam Breach Analysis Model (DB-IWHR) 2014 software and the flood regulation method were used to simulate the dam breaking progress. The posteriori continuous breaking failure paths were obtained, and then the original CPTs were refined based on the new evidence. The proposed method was applied to the Bala-Busigou-Shuangjiangkou (BL-BSG-SJK), which is located upstream of the Dadu River basin in China. The results show that three continuous breaking failure paths could be identified in the researched cascade dam system. A new BN model was created to determine the failure probability of the cascade dam system under the three continuous breaking failure paths. This analytical method may also be useful for other similar cases.

Traffic speed meters are important legal measuring instruments specially used for traffic speed enforcement and must be tested and verified in the field every year using a vehicular mobile standard speed-measuring instrument to ensure speed-measuring performances. The non-contact optical speed sensor and the GPS speed sensor are the two most common types of standard speed-measuring instruments. The non-contact optical speed sensor requires extremely high installation accuracy, and its speed-measuring error is nonlinear and uncorrectable. The speed-measuring accuracy of the GPS speed sensor is rapidly reduced if the amount of received satellites is insufficient enough, which often occurs in urban high-rise regions, tunnels, and mountainous regions. In this paper, a new standard speed-measuring instrument using a dual-antenna Doppler radar sensor is proposed based on a tradeoff between the installation accuracy requirement and the usage region limitation, which has no specified requirements for its mounting distance and no limitation on usage regions and can automatically compensate for the effect of an inclined installation angle on its speed-measuring accuracy. Theoretical model analysis, simulated speed measurement results, and field experimental results compared with a GPS speed sensor with high accuracy showed that the dual-antenna Doppler radar sensor is effective and reliable as a new standard speed-measuring instrument.

The strain rate sensitivity (SRS) and dislocation activation volume are two inter-related material properties for understanding thermally-activated plastic deformation, such as creep. For face-centered-cubic metals, SRS normally increases with decreasing grain size, whereas the opposite holds for body-center-cubic metals. However, these findings are applicable to metals with average grain sizes greater than tens of nanometers. Recent studies on mechanical behaviors presented distinct deformation mechanisms in multilayers with individual layer thickness of 20 nanometers or less. It is necessary to estimate the SRS and plastic deformation mechanisms in this regime. Here, we review a new nanoindentation test method that renders reliable hardness measurement insensitive to thermal drift, and its application on SRS of Cu/amorphous-CuNb nanolayers. The new technique is applied to Cu films and returns expected SRS values when compared to conventional tensile test results. The SRS of Cu/amorphous-CuNb nanolayers demonstrates two distinct deformation mechanisms depending on layer thickness: dislocation pileup-dominated and interface-mediated deformation mechanisms.

Background: The beneficial effects of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and sodium butyrate (NaB) on protection against cholestasis-induced liver fibrosis are not well known. This study aimed to explore the effects of FGF21 and NaB on bile duct ligation (BDL)-induced liver fibrosis. Methods: Wild-type (WT) and FGF21 knockout (KO) mice received BDL surgery for 14 days. Liver fibrosis was assessed by Masson's staining for fibrosis marker expressions at the mRNA or protein levels. Adenovirus-mediated FGF21 overexpression in the WT mice was assessed against BDL damage. BDL surgeries were performed in WT and FGF21 KO mice that were administered either phosphate-buffered saline or NaB. The effects of NaB on the energy metabolism and gut microbiota were assessed using stable metabolism detection and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results: BDL-induced liver fibrosis in the WT mice was accompanied by high induction of FGF21. Compared to the WT mice, the FGF21 KO mice showed more severe liver fibrosis induced by BDL. FGF21 overexpression protected against BDL-induced liver fibrosis, as proved by the decreasing a-SMA at both the mRNA and protein levels. NaB administration enhanced the glucose and energy metabolisms as well as remodeled the gut microbiota. NaB alleviated BDL-induced liver fibrosis in the WT mice but aggravated the same in FGF21 KO mice. Conclusion: FGF21 plays a key role in alleviating cholestasis-induced liver damage and fibrosis. NaB has beneficial effects on cholestasis in an FGF21-dependent manner. NaB administration can thus be a novel nutritional therapy for treating cholestasis via boosting FGF21 signaling and regulating the gut microbiota. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
