We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the nonlinearity management which describes Bose-Einstein condensates under Feshbach resonance. By using an averaging theory, we derive the Hamiltonian averaged equation and compare it with other averaging methods developed for this problem. The averaged equation is used for analytical approximations of nonlinearity-managed solitons.

We revisit the averaged equation, derived in Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 240201 (2003)] from the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with the nonlinearity management. We show that this averaged equation is valid only at the initial time interval, while a new Hamiltonian averaged NLS equation can be used at longer time intervals. Using the new averaged equation, we construct numerically matter-wave solitons in the context of the Bose-Einstein condensates under the Feshbach resonance management. We show that there is no threshold on the existence of dark solitons of large amplitudes, whereas such a threshold exists for bright solitons.

Two dimensional resonators with a smooth strictly convex boundary are known to possess a whispering gallery region supporting modes concentrated near the boundary. A new class of asymmetric resonant cavities is introduced, where a whispering gallery-like region is found deep inside the resonator. The construction of such resonators is a novel application of the geometric control methods. The results of numerical simulations and experiments are presented.

An exact pulse for the parametrically forced nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) is isolated. The equation governs wave envelope propagation in dispersion-managed fiber lines with positive residual dispersion. The pulse is obtained as a ground state of an averaged variational principle associated with the equation governing pulse dynamics. The solutions of the averaged and original equations are shown to stay close for a sufficiently long time. A properly adjusted pulse will therefore exhibit nearly periodic behavior in the time interval of validity of the averaging procedure. Furthermore, we show that periodic variation of dispersion can stabilize spatial solitons in a Kerr medium and one-dimensional solitons in the NLS with quintic nonlinearity. The results are confirmed by numerical simulations.
