Mixed carbon materials composed of carbon nanotubes and graphene were applied as fire retardant filler in the fire resistive coating. The fire resistance, thermal stability, water resistance and mechanical properties were investigated respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to study the morphology and composition of the carbon chars. The results indicated that the combination of graphene and carbon nanotubes could have a synergistic effect on fire protection and thermal stability. Additionally, when the weight ratio of graphene and carbon nanotubes was 3:1, the coating exhibited “Excellent” fire resistance and flame retardancy index (FRI) was over 10. SEM, EDS, XRD analysis demonstrated that the carbon content of dense carbon layer achieved 40.97% and titanium pyrophosphate was generated. The coating with higher content of graphene exhibited better water resistance, mechanical properties and adhesion level.

In this study, three kinds of graphene were used as fire retardant fillers to improve the properties of waterborne intumescent fire resistive coatings. The surface area of graphene was measured by nitrogen adsorption-desorption method. The influences of surface area of graphene on fire resistance, thermal stability, smoke suppression and water resistance of the coatings were studied. SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS were used to investigated the structure and composition of the inorganic expansion layer. The spectra of FTIR and XRD demonstrated the inorganic expansion layer had the same chemical composition. The XPS result proved that graphene could enhance anti-oxidation of the inorganic expansion layer. The SEM images showed that the number of holes and cracks decreased with the addition of graphene. The results demonstrated that the graphene with surface area of 212 m2/g significantly enhanced the fire resistance, thermal stability, smoke suppression, water resistance of the fire resistive coatings effectively.

Bagasse was applied as fire-retardant filler to prepare the waterborne intumescent fireproof coating. The effect of bagasse on the properties of the fireproof coating was investigated by fire protection test, thermogravimetric (TG), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water resistance test and mechanical properties test. The result demonstrated the coating contained 1.5wt.% bagasse performed best in fire protection, thermal stability, oxidation resistance. Moreover, the char layer was dense and continuous. However, the fireproof coating contained 2 wt.% bagasse had excellent performance in water resistance test and mechanical properties test due to its properties of fiber. In addition, the components and chemical structure of char layer were characterized to study the flame retardant mechanism of bagasse in the fireproof coating.

With regard to the adiabatic principle of insulation, a novel multilayer cladding structure composites (MCSC) with vacuum inside was put forward, which could be used in high temperature insulation field. In the composites, SiO2 was used to fill the microcracks and protect the carbon matrix from oxidizing. This novel material was composed of two parts, one was the core material consisted of SiC foam ceramic, the other was the flawless outer shell consisted of carbon fiber reinforced composites with vacuum inside that produced by Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI) Pyrolytic Carbon (PyC) and silicasol-infiltration–sintering methods. Material density was 0.81 g/cm3. The effective thermal conductivity of MCSC ranged from 0.193 W/m · K to 0.721 W/m · K within the temperature from 303 K to 703 K, which was 13.5–23.3% lower than the value of SiC ceramic foam core materials. However, at 1473 K, the measured data of MCSC and SiC foam were 1.815 W/m · K and 1.911 W/m · K, respectively. It was only 5.02% lower than that of SiC foam. The new carbon materials bring significant progress in fire resistance coating and technology, especially carbon nano materials. Aiming to improve the fire resistance, expanded graphite (EG), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), fullerene (C60), graphene (Gr) were applied as filler in the waterborne intumescent coatings to investigate fire resistance, thermal stability, smoke suppression and water resistance. The effects of carbon materials on fire protection and smoke suppression of waterborne intumescent coating were investigated in detail by fire retardant test, thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), smoke density test and water resistance test. The carbon layers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and particle size distribution. The results of fire protection test and SEM indicated that the fire resistance of coatings was enhanced by adding 1% content of carbon materials. TGA analysis showed that carbon materials could increase the residual weight and thermal stability of the coatings. After immersed in water for 360 h, the results of water resistance test, the carbon materials could form barrier to improve the water resistance of the coatings. Especially, the graphene exhibited the best performance among all the carbon materials.
