1. Investigation and Evaluation of Systematic Reviews of Prediction Models Published in Chinese Journals: Methodological and Reporting Quality

Abstract

ObjectiveTo analyze the methodological and reporting quality of systematic reviews of prediction models published in Chinese journals, with the aim of providing reference for enhancing the overall quality of Chinese systematic reviews of prediction models.MethodsWe searched the CNKI, WanFang Data, CBM, and VIP databases for Chinese systematic reviews of prediction models from inception to July 20, 2023. After two independent reviewers screened literature and extracted data, the AMSTAR(A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews) and PRISMA 2020(Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020) tools were used to assess the methodological and reporting quality of the included reviews.ResultsA total of 55 systematic reviews published between 2015 and 2023 were included, 12 of which were meta-analysis. The reviews covered various topics, mainly including cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and diabetes. The identified systematic reviews exhibited obvious deficiencies: items 1, 4, 5, 6, and 10 of AMSTAR showed poor methodological quality, and items 7, 10a, 12, 13a-f, 14, 15, 16a-b, 17, 20b-d, 21, 22, 23d, 24a-c, 25 and 26 of PRISMA 2020 needed improvement in reporting quality. Furthermore, a moderate positive correlation (r=0.58, P < 0.001) was observed between the methodological and reporting quality. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that a greater number of pages, more recent publications, and funding support were associated with higher methodological quality (P < 0.05). Similarly, a greater number of pages, more recent publications, qualitative systematic reviews, and funding support were associated with higher reporting quality, but the number of authors showed a negative association (P < 0.05).ConclusionThe methodological and reporting quality of existing systematic reviews of prediction models published in Chinese journals is relatively poor and demands improvement.

10. Intravital imaging and cavitation monitoring of antivascular ultrasound in tumor microvasculature

Abstract

Focused ultrasound stimulated microbubbles have been shown to be capable of inducing blood flow shutdown and necrosis in a range of tissue types in an approach termed antivascular ultrasound or mechanical ablation. In oncology, this approach has demonstrated tumor growth inhibition, and profound synergistic antitumor effects when combined with traditional platforms of chemo, radiation and immune therapies. However, the exposure schemes employed have been broad and underlying mechanisms remain unclear with fundamental questions about exposures, vessel types and sizes involved, and the nature of bubble behaviors and their acoustic emissions resulting in vascular damage, impeding the establishment of standard protocols. Here, ultrasound transmitters and receivers are integrated into a murine dorsal window chamber tumor model for intravital microscopy studies capable of real time visual and acoustic monitoring during antivascular ultrasound. Vessel type (normal and tumor affected), caliber, and viability are assessed under higher pressure conditions (1, 2, and 3 MPa), and cavitation signatures are linked to the biological effects. Vascular events occurred preferentially in tumor affected vessels with greater incidence in smaller vessels and with more severity as a function of increasing pressure. Vascular blood flow shutdown was found to be due to a combination of focal disruption events and network related flow changes. Acoustic emissions displayed elevated broadband noise and distinct sub and ultra harmonics and their associated third order peaks with increasing pressure. The observed vascular events taken collectively with identified cavitation signatures provide an improved mechanistic understanding of antivascular ultrasound at the microscale, with implications for establishing a specific treatment protocol and control platform., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Theranostics

Abstract

This paper studies a distributed policy gradient in collaborative multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), where agents over a communication network aim to find the optimal policy to maximize the average of all agents' local returns. Due to the non-concave performance function of policy gradient, the existing distributed stochastic optimization methods for convex problems cannot be directly used for policy gradient in MARL. This paper proposes a distributed policy gradient with variance reduction and gradient tracking to address the high variances of policy gradient, and utilizes importance weight to solve the {distribution shift} problem in the sampling process. We then provide an upper bound on the mean-squared stationary gap, which depends on the number of iterations, the mini-batch size, the epoch size, the problem parameters, and the network topology. We further establish the sample and communication complexity to obtain an $\epsilon$-approximate stationary point. Numerical experiments are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract

To learn a reliable people counter from crowd images, head center annotations are normally required. Annotating head centers is however a laborious and tedious process in dense crowds. In this paper, we present an active learning framework which enables accurate crowd counting with limited supervision: given a small labeling budget, instead of randomly selecting images to annotate, we first introduce an active labeling strategy to annotate the most informative images in the dataset and learn the counting model upon them. The process is repeated such that in every cycle we select the samples that are diverse in crowd density and dissimilar to previous selections. In the last cycle when the labeling budget is met, the large amount of unlabeled data are also utilized: a distribution classifier is introduced to align the labeled data with unlabeled data; furthermore, we propose to mix up the distribution labels and latent representations of data in the network to particularly improve the distribution alignment in-between training samples. We follow the popular density estimation pipeline for crowd counting. Extensive experiments are conducted on standard benchmarks i.e. ShanghaiTech, UCF CC 50, MAll, TRANCOS, and DCC.
