However, the reason in about 50% of cases remains unknown and is defined as unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA). The immunological perspective in URSA has attracted widespread attention in recent years. The embryo is regarded as a semi-allogeneic graft to the mother. A successful pregnancy requires transition to an immune environment conducive to embryo survival at the maternal–fetal interface. As an important member of regulatory immunity, regulatory T (Treg) cells play a key role in regulating immune tolerance at the maternal–fetal interface. However, the role of Tc17 cells in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) remains unclear.Methods: The frequency of Tc17 cells in blood samples from 66 patients with HBV-ACLF was determined by flow cytometry. The levels of Tc17 cell-related cytokines were measured by FlowCytomix assays. The prognostic prediction accuracy was evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Survival was analyzed using Kaplan–Meier curves. Mortality predictors were determined by the Cox regression analysis.Results: The frequency of Tc17 cells was markedly higher in patients with HBV-ACLF than in those with chronic hepatitis B and normal control subjects. Increased frequencies of Tc17 cells may indicate liver injury and were positively correlated with disease severity. The Tc17 cell frequency was significantly higher in non-surviving patients with HBV-ACLF than in surviving patients. The ROC curve analysis showed that Tc17 cell frequency accurately predicted 90-day survival in patients with HBV-ACLF, with an accuracy equivalent to those of the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD), MELD-Na, and Chronic Liver Failure Consortium ACLF scores. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed an association between the increase in circulating Tc17 cells and poor overall survival in patients with HBV-ACLF. Moreover, the multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that Tc17 cell frequency was an independent predictor of overall survival in patients with HBV-ACLF.Conclusion: Tc17 cells may play a proinflammatory role in HBV-ACLF pathogenesis. Furthermore, the increased frequency of circulating Tc17 cells could be an independent prognostic biomarker in patients with HBV-ACLF. Keywords: liver disease, inflammation, prognosis, T cells

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the prevalent cardiac arrhythmia and can significantly impair the quality of life (QoL). Although catheter ablation (CA) is an established treatment for AF,post-procedural complications or perceived inadequate control of AF may diminish the QoL for some patients, potentially even to levels lower than pre-procedure. Preliminary findings from our previous pilot trial indicate that acupuncture may positively influence QoL in AF patients post-CA. This study aims to increase the sample size to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment to conventional medical therapy in improving QoL of patients with AF after CA., Methods and Design: This multicentre randomised clinical trial will be conducted in China. A total of 146 eligible patients will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either the acupuncture group or the sham acupuncture group. All patients will receive standard postablation care and undergo 18 sessions of acupuncture/sham acupuncture within 12 weeks following CA, followed by a 9-month follow-up period. The primary outcome is the change in the Atrial Fibrillation Effect on Quality-of-Life (AFEQT) summary score from baseline to months 6 after CA. Secondary outcomes include the changes in the AFEQT subscale scores at months 6, the AFEQT summary and subscale score at months 3 and 12, AF burden, AF recurrence, heart rate variability, number of cardioversions, repeat CA procedures, European Heart Rhythm Association score, number of arrhythmia-related hospitalisations, average heart rate, use of Six-Dimensional Health State Short Form to assess health status, costs incurred by disease treatment, Credibility/Expectancy Questionnaire and blinded assessments. Information on patients with rifampicin-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (RR-PTB) in Yangzhou City from 2012 to 2020 was obtained from the Information System of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The epidemic characteristics of RR-PTB patients were analyzed by using χ 2 test. The average annual registered incidence rate of RR-PTB patients in Yangzhou City from 2012 to 2020 was 0.57/100 000, and the difference between the registered incidence rates in each year was statistically significant ( χ 2 =29.326, P <0.001). The proportion of re-treated patients (64.8%) was higher than that of newly treated patients (35.2%, χ 2 =50.593, P <0.001). The registered incidence rate in males (0.91/100 000) was higher than that in females (0.24/100 000, χ 2 =80.566, P <0.001). The age distribution showed that the highest incidence rate was in the age group≥60 years (0.96/100 000) and the lowest was in the age group 0-<45 years (0.31/100 000, χ 2 =55.853, P <0.001). From 2012 to 2020, Baoying County had the largest number of registered RR-PTB patients (44 cases), and its registered incidence rate (0.64/100 000) was only lower than that of Guangling District (0.98/100 000). The registered incidence rate of RR-PTB patients in Baoying County during 2016-2020 also increased significantly compared to 2012-2015 ( P =0.001). Logistic regression was used to analyze the factors related to the treatment outcome of RR-PTB patients. The results showed that patients aged≥60 years and those classified as the re-treatment were risk factors for successful treatment of RR-PTB patients ( P <0.05). In summary, males, people aged≥60 years, patients classified as the re-treatment, and residents of Baoying County should be the key populations for RR-PTB epidemic prevention and control in Yangzhou City.

Background: Balloon catheter isolation is a promising auxiliary method for thermal ablation treatment of liver cancer. We aimed to explore the safety and effectiveness of balloon catheter isolation-assisted ultrasound-guided percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) in treating liver cancer in difficult anatomical locations., Methods: Data of 132 patients with 145 difficult-site liver cancer treated with ultrasound-guided percutaneous MWA were retrospectively analyzed. Participants were classified into the isolation (n = 40) and non-isolation (n = 92) groups based on whether the patients were treated using a balloon catheter prior to ablation. The major complication rates, local tumor residuals (LTR), and tumor follow-up for local tumor progression (LTP) at 6 and 12 months post-ablation were compared between the two groups., Results: The rates of major postoperative complications did not significantly differ between the isolation and non-isolation groups (2.5% vs. 4.3%, P = 0.609). The postoperative LTR rates were significantly different between the isolation and non-isolation groups (4.8% vs. 17.5%, P = 0.032). Balloon catheter isolation [odds ratio (OR) = 0.225, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.085-0.595, P = 0.009] and tumor diameter (OR = 2.808, 95% CI: 1.186-6.647, P = 0.019) were identified as independent factors influencing LTR rate. The cumulative LTP rates at 6 and 12 months after ablation showed no significant differences between the isolation and non-isolation groups (2.6% vs. 7.9%, P = 0.661; 4.9% vs. 9.8%, P = 0.676, respectively). Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that tumor diameter was an independent risk factor for cumulative LTP rate (OR = 3.445, 95% CI: 1.406-8.437, P = 0.017)., Conclusions: Balloon catheter isolation-assisted MWA was safe and effective in the treatment of difficult-site liver cancer. Pepper (Capsicum spp.) is an important fruit vegetable worldwide, and it is a rich dietary source of minerals for human being. Yet, the spatio-temporal distribution of pepper fruit mineral composition and the factors influencing such variations at global scale remain unknown. A global meta-analysis of 140 publications providing 649, 562, 690, 811 datapoints was conducted to quantify and evaluate the nutritional quality, comprising potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), of pepper fruits and its influencing variables. The analysis showed that the global average of K, Mg, Fe and Zn content in pepper fruits was 20-25 g kg -1 , 1-1.5 g kg -1 , 80-100 mg kg -1 , and 20-40 mg kg -1 , respectively. There had been a downward trend in pepper fruit nutritional quality over the last decade, especially for Fe and Zn. And, the concentration of all these four nutrients were at lower levels in less developed regions, especially in Africa. Our results showed that the vegetable "green pepper" contains more K, Mg, Fe and Zn than the "hot pepper" used as spice. The concentration of K, Mg, Fe and Zn were increased with fruit yield but that of Fe and Zn were decreased with increase in single fruit weight. Nutritional quality was optimal at mean annual temperature of 10 ℃ - 20 ℃, and was adversely affected when mean annual precipitation was < 500 mm. Pepper fruits produced at pH 6.5-7.5 had higher fruit K concentration while acidic soils (pH<6.5) favored higher Fe and Zn concentrations. The higher soil organic matter (SOM) generally improved the nutritional quality of the pepper. Two new ent-labdane diterpenoids, hypoestesins A-B (1-2) and five new labdane diterpenoids, hypopurolides H-L (3-7), were isolated from the aerial parts of Hypoestes purpurea. All of the structures were fully determined based on extensive analysis of 1 H, 13 C, 2D NMR, and HRESIMS data. The absolute configurations of 1-3 was established through comparing the experimental and calculated ECD curves and the structure of 5 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction experiment. Compounds 5-7 were unusual C23 labdane diterpenoids having a γ-acetonyl-α, β-unsaturated γ-lactone unit and each assigned as C-15 epimeric mixture. Furthermore, cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory activities of 3-7 were evaluated. The results showed that 3 had remarkable cytotoxic activity against HL-60, A549, SMMC-7721, MDA-MB-231, and SW480 cancer cell lines with IC 50 values ranging from 2.35 to 17.06 μM. Compound 4 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against HL-60 and SMMC-7721 cancer cell lines with IC 50 values of 15.12 ± 0.53 and 12.92 ± 0.60 μM, respectively. Antimony （Sb） is a major pollutant that poses a serious threat to the environment in the mining and processing of nonferrous metals, coexisting with sulfide and oxide of arsenic （As）. Microorganisms play an important role in the migration, transformation, and repair of metals in soil. The ecological effects of bioavailable Sb and As on the microbial community in antimony mining areas（mining and smelting areas）are still poorly understood. The Wenzel method and high-throughput 16S rDNA amplicon were used to characterize soil pollution characteristics in different functional areas, and the relationship between the bacterial community and bioavailable concentrations have been investigated comprehensively. The results showed that： Chemical speciation of Sb and As were amorphous, and poorly crystalline hydrous oxides of Fe and Al （F3） &gt; well-crystallized hydrous oxides of Fe and Al （F4） &gt; residual phases （F5） &gt; specifically adsorbed （F2） &gt; non-specifically adsorbed （F1）. According to the estimation of the potential ecological risk index （RI） and geo-accumulation index （ I geo ）, the Sb pollution degree was： smelting area &gt; mining area &gt; contrast area, in which the smelting area showed serious pollution, and the mining area showed moderate to severe pollution. The As pollution degree was： mining area &gt; smelting area &gt; contrast area, in which the mining area and smelting area showed moderate to severe pollution. High-throughput 16S rDNA amplicon showed that Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum in mining and smelting areas； Kaistobacter , Pseudomonas , Sphingomonas , and Lysobacter were the most abundant microbial genera； Geobacter and Luteolibacter had a high LDA score in mining areas； and Thiobacillus had a high LDA score in antimony-contaminated areas. Spearman correlation analysis, variation partitioning analysis （VPA）, and random forest （RF） analysis showed that Sb, As, bioavailable antimony [Sb （Bio）], and bioavailable arsenic [As （Bio）]were the main factors affecting the microbial community structure in different functional areas of antimony ore. Redundancy analysis （RDA） indicated that Sb and its bioavailable concentrations showed uniformly negative associations with the relative abundance of bacteria Nitrospirae and showed a significant positive correlation with Thiobacillus （ P <0.05）. The in-depth research on the ecological effects of bioavailable Sb and As on the bacterial community provides references and new perspectives for environmental monitoring and management.

Efficiently fabricating a cavity that can achieve strong interactions between terahertz waves and matter would allow researchers to exploit the intrinsic properties due to the long wavelength in the terahertz waveband. Here we show a terahertz detector embedded in a Tamm cavity with a record Q value of 1017 and a bandwidth of only 469 MHz for direct detection. The Tamm-cavity detector is formed by embedding a substrate with an Nb 5 N 6 microbolometer detector between an Si/air distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and a metal reflector. The resonant frequency can be controlled by adjusting the thickness of the substrate layer. The detector and DBR are fabricated separately, and a large pixel-array detector can be realized by a very simple assembly process. This versatile cavity structure can be used as a platform for preparing high-performance terahertz devices and opening up the study of the strong interactions between terahertz waves and matter., (© 2024. The precise recognition and sensing of steroids, a type of vital biomolecules, hold immense practical value across various domains. In this study, we introduced corral[4]BINOLs (C[4]BINOLs), a pair of enantiomeric conjugated deep-cavity hosts, as novel synthetic receptors for binding steroids. Due to the strong hydrophobic effect of their deep nonpolar, chiral cavities, the two enantiomers of C[4]BINOLs demonstrated exceptionally high recognition affinities (up to 10 12  M -1 ) for 16 important steroidal compounds as well as good enantioselectiviy (up to 15.5) in aqueous solutions, establishing them as the most potent known steroid receptors. Harnessing their ultrahigh affinity, remarkable enantioselectivity, and fluorescence emission properties, the two C[4]BINOL enantiomers were employed to compose a fluorescent sensor array which achieved discrimination and sensing of 16 structurally similar steroids at low concentrations., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The development of artificial receptors that combine ultrahigh-affinity binding and controllable release for active guests holds significant importance in biomedical applications. On one hand, a complex with an exceedingly high binding affinity can resist unwanted dissociation induced by dilution effect and complex interferents within physiological environments. On the other hand, stimulus-responsive release of the guest is essential for precisely activating its function. In this context, we expanded hydrophobic cavity surface of a hypoxia-responsive azocalix[4]arene, affording Naph-SAC4A. This modification significantly enhanced its aqueous binding affinity to 10 13  M -1 , akin to the naturally occurring strongest recognition pair, biotin/(strept-)avidin. Consequently, Naph-SAC4A emerges as the first artificial receptor to simultaneously integrate ultrahigh recognition affinity and actively controllable release. The markedly enhanced affinity not only improved Naph-SAC4A's sensitivity in detecting rocuronium bromide in serum, but also refined the precision of hypoxia-responsive doxorubicin delivery at the cellular level, demonstrating its immense potential for diverse practical applications., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The P1 phage has garnered attention as a carrier of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in Enterobacteriaceae. However, the transferability of ARGs by P1-like phages carrying ARGs, in addition to the mechanism underlying ARG acquisition, remain largely unknown. In this study, we elucidated the biological characteristics, the induction and transmission abilities, and the acquisition mechanism of the bla CTX-M-27 gene in the P1 phage. The P1-CTX phage exhibited distinct lytic plaques and possessed a complete head and tail structure. Additionally, the P1-CTX phage was induced successfully under various conditions, including UV exposure, heat treatment at 42 °C, and subinhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of antibiotics. Moreover, the P1-CTX phage could mobilize the bla CTX-M-27 gene into three strains of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and the following seven different serotypes of Salmonella : Rissen, Derby, Kentucky, Typhimurium, Cerro, Senftenberg, and Muenster. The mechanism underlying ARG acquisition by the P1-CTX phage involved Tn 1721 transposition-mediated movement of bla CTX-M-27 into the ref and mat genes within its genome. To our knowledge, this is the first report documenting the dynamic processes of ARG acquisition by a phage. Furthermore, this study enriches the research on the mechanism underlying the phage acquisition of drug resistance genes and provides a basis for determining the risk of drug resistance during phage transmission.

Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is a clinical syndrome characterized by chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, asthma and the development of significant airway symptoms following the ingestion of aspirin and other nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). At present, aspirin challenge is the gold standard for diagnosis. Aspirin desensitization and aspirin therapy after desensitization (ATAD) is one of the classical therapies. This paper described the application of aspirin desensitization and ATAD in AERD and provided the reference for the comprehensive treatment of AERD.

Objective: To validate the performance of a multi-omics combined test for early screening of high-risk liver cancer populations. Methods: 173 high-risk patients with liver cancer were prospectively screened in a real-world setting, and 164 cases were finally enrolled. B-ultrasound, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), and HCC screens were conducted in all patients. A multi-omics early screening test was performed for liver cancer in combination with multi-gene methylation, TP53/TERT/CTNNB1 mutations, AFP, and abnormal prothrombin (PIVKA-II). Differences in rates were compared using the chi-square test, adjusted chi-square test, or Fisher's exact probability method for count data. A non-parametric rank test (Mann-Whitney) was used to compare the differences between the two groups of data. Results: The HCCscreen detection had a sensitivity of 100% for liver cancer screening, 93.8% for liver cancer and precancerous diseases, 34.1% for positive predictive value, 99.2% for negative predictive value, and 0.89 for an area under the curve (AUC). Parallel detection of AFP, AFP+B-ultrasound, and methylation+mutation had a sensitivity/specificity and AUC of 31.3%/88.5% (AUC=0.78), 56.3%/88.2% (AUC=0.86), and 81.3%/82.4 % (AUC=0.84). At the same time, the disease severity range was significantly correlated with the methylation+mutation score, HCCscreen score, or positive detection rate (PDR). There was no significant correlation between AFP serum levels and methylation+mutation or HCCscreen scores, while there was a significant linear correlation between methylation+mutation scores and HCCscreen scores ( r  = 0.73, P  < 0.001). Conclusion: In real-world settings, HCCscreen shows high sensitivity for screening opportunistic, high-risk liver cancer populations. Furthermore, it may efficaciously detect liver cancer and precancerous diseases, with superior performance to AFP and AFP+ultrasound. Hence, HCCscreen has the potential to become an effective screening tool that is superior to existing screening methods for high-risk liver cancer populations.

The monophasic variant of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium with the antigenic formula 1,4,[5],12:i:- is one of the most common pathogenic bacteria causing global food-borne outbreaks. However, the research on molecular characteristics and evolution of monophasic S. typhimurium in China is still lacking. In the current study, 59 monophasic S. typhimurium strains were isolated from food animals and food products in South China between 2011 and 2018. A total of 87.5 % of monophasic S. typhimurium isolates were grouped into one independent clade with other monophasic S. typhimurium strains in China distinct from other countries by phylogenomic analysis. These isolates possess variable genotypes, including multiple ARGs on plasmid IncHI2, diverse evolutions at the fljAB locus, and virulence factors. Objective: To analyze the trend of mortality rate and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) of colorectal cancer attributable to dietary risk factors from 1990 to 2019 in China. Methods: Mortality rate and DALY rate of colorectal cancer attributable to dietary risk factors (diet high in processed meat, diet high in red meat, diet low in calcium, diet in low in fiber, diet low in milk, diet low in whole grains, dietary risks) were collected from the Global Burden of Disease study 2019 (GBD2019). Joinpoint regression model was selected to analyze the trend and an age-period-cohort model was used to estimate the effects of age, period and birth cohort. Results: Joinpoint regression analysis showed that the age-standardized mortality rate and age-standardized DALY rate of colorectal cancer attributable to diet high in processed meat, diet high in red meat, diet low in milk, diet low in whole grains and dietary risks showed an upward trend ( P <0.05) from 1990 to 2019, while those attributable to diet low in calcium and diet low in fiber showed a downward trend ( P <0.05). The mortality rate and DALY rate of colorectal cancer attributable to diet high in processed meat, diet high in red meat, diet low in milk, diet low in whole grains and dietary risks in age groups from 65 to 79 years showed a quicker upward trend than those in age groups from 25 to 64 years. The mortality rate and DALY rate attributable to diet low in calcium and diet low in fiber in age groups from 65 to 79 years showed a slower downward trend than those in age groups from 25 to 64 years. The mortality rate and DALY rate of colorectal cancer attributable to diet high in processed meat, diet high in red meat, diet low in calcium, diet low in fiber, diet low in milk, diet low in whole grains, and dietary risks increased with age after adjusting for period effect and cohort effect ( P <0.05). The mortality rate and DALY rate attributable to diet high in processed meat, diet high in red meat, diet low in calcium, diet low in milk, diet low in whole grains and dietary risks increased with period or cohort, while those attributable to diet low in fiber decreased with period or cohort. Period and cohort effect of dietary risk factors in this study were statistically significant ( P <0.001). Conclusions: Disease burden of colorectal cancer attributable to dietary risk factors in China showed an upward trend in general. Elderly population is high at risk and more attention should be paid to science popularization and education on dietary risk factors in prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer.

Objective: Depression is a common mental illness. Neural stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (NSC-EVs) are involved in repairing neuronal injury. We estimated the mechanism of miR-16-5p in depression rats., Methods: EVs were extracted from NSCs. The depression rat model was established by corticosterone (CORT) induction and treated with NSC-EVs. The depression behavioral/pathological changes in rats were assessed using forced swimming test, open field test, sucrose consumption test and western blotting. The neuronal apoptosis in hippocampal tissue were detected. CORT-induced PC12 cell model was established. EV uptake by PC12 cells was measured and PC12 cell apoptosis was detected. The downstream targets of miR-16-5p were predicted and verified. The expressions of miR-16-5p and MYB in rats, PC12 cells, and EVs were measured. Functional rescue experiments were conducted to verify the role of miR-16-5p and MYB in PC12 cell apoptosis., Results: CORT induction increased neuronal apoptosis in hippocampal tissue and induced depression-like behaviors in rats, while NSC-EV treatment improved depression-like behaviors and apoptosis in rats. In PC12 cells, NSC-EVs decreased CORT-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. NSC-EVs carried miR-16-5p into PC12 cells. miR-16-5p knockdown in EVs partially reversed the inhibitory effects of NSC-EVs on CORT-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. miR-16-5p targeted to inhibit MYB to repress CORT-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. In vivo experiments further verified that NSC-EVs reduced neuronal injury in CORT-induced depression rats via the miR-16-5p/MYB axis., Conclusion: NSC-EVs-mediated alleviation on neuronal injury by carrying miR-16-5p to target MYB was highly likely one of the mechanisms by which NSC-EVs mediated miR-16-5p in neuroprotection of depression rats., (Copyright © 2023 IBRO. Parasitoid wasps, notably egg parasitoids of the family Eupelmidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea), a key natural enemy of insect pests, offer a sustainable approach to pest management in agriculture. This study investigated the venom apparatus's developmental dynamics across 4 species of eupelmid egg parasitoids: Anastatus. japonicus , Anastatus fulloi , Mesocomys trabalae and Mesocomys albitarsis . A comprehensive anatomical investigation revealed differences in the dimensions of the venom apparatus across different developmental stages in adult females. We found that the venom apparatus of these 4 studied species consists of a venom gland and a reservoir with an associated Dufour's gland. As the length of post-emergence increases, a significant enlargement in the venom apparatus is evident across all the studied parasitoid species. Notably, M. albitarsis consistently exhibites the shortest venom gland length, whereas that of A. fulloi is the longest among the observed species. At the high day age, the width of venom glands of the 2 Mesocomys species surpasses those of the Anastatus species; for the volume of the venom reservoir, there is a steady increase in all 4 species before the age of 6–7 days, with a decline on 8th day, especially for A. japonicus . This research provided new insights into the developmental trajectories of venom apparatus in eupelmid egg parasitoids and the potential impact of venom potency on their success.

Classical and quantum space-to-ground communications necessitate highly sensitive receivers capable of extracting information from modulated photons to extend the communication distance from near-earth orbits to deep space explorations. To achieve gigabit data rates while mitigating strong background noise photons and beam drift in a highly attenuated free-space channel, a comprehensive design of a multi-functional detector is indispensable. In this study, we present an innovative compact multi-pixel superconducting nanowire single-photon detector array that integrates near-unity detection efficiency (91.6%), high photon counting rate (1.61 Gcps), large dynamic range for resolving different photon numbers (1-24), and four-quadrant position sensing function all within one device. Furthermore, we have constructed a communication testbed to validate the advantages offered by such an architecture. Through 8-PPM (pulse position modulation) format communication experiments, we have achieved an impressive maximum data rate of 1.5 Gbps, demonstrating sensitivities surpassing previous benchmarks at respective speeds. By incorporating photon number information into error correction codes, the receiver can tolerate maximum background noise levels equivalent to 0.8 photons/slot at a data rate of 120 Mbps-showcasing a great potential for daylight operation scenarios. Additionally, preliminary beam tracking tests were conducted through open-loop scanning techniques, which revealed clear quantitative dependence indicating sensitivity variations based on beam location. Based on the device characterizations and communication results, we anticipate that this device architecture, along with its corresponding signal processing and coding techniques, will be applicable in future space-to-ground communication tasks., (© 2024. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most important diseases which controlling its related risk factors, such as metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers, is necessary because of the increased mortality risk of that. The aim of our meta-analysis is to reveal the general effect of vitamin K supplementation on its related risk factors. Original databases were searched using standard keywords to identify all randomized clinical trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of vitamin K on CVD. Pooled weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI) were achieved by random-model effect analysis for the best estimation of outcomes. The statistical heterogeneity was determined using the Cochran's Q test and I 2 statistics. Seventeen studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled findings showed that vitamin K supplementation can reduce homeostatic model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (WMD: -0⋅24, 95 % CI: -0⋅49, -0⋅02, P = 0⋅047) significantly compared to the placebo group. However, no significant effect was observed on other outcomes. Subgroup analysis showed a significant effect of vitamin K2 supplementation compared to vitamin K1 supplementation on HOMA-IR. However, no significant effect was observed on other variables. Also, subgroup analysis showed no potential effect of vitamin K supplementation on any outcome and omitting any articles did not affect the final results. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Diarrhea is a frequently encountered gastrointestinal complication in clinical practice, and E. coli is one of the main causative agents. Although Qingjie decoction (QJD) has been shown to be highly effective in treating diarrhea by eliminating heat-toxin, the underlying molecular mechanisms and pathways of QJD remain unclear., Aim of Review: The aim of this research was to explore the effects and fundamental mechanism of QJD on diarrhea induced by E.coli in rats., Materials and Methods: Initially, we used UHPLC-MS/MS analysis to identify the chemical composition of QJD. Then, we constructed a visualization network using network pharmacology. Next, we utilized metabolomics to identify differentially expressed metabolites of QJD that are effective in treating diarrhea., Results: The chemical composition of QJD was analyzed using UHPLC-MS/MS, which identified a total of 292 components. Using a network pharmacology approach, 127 bioactive compounds of QJD were screened, targeting 171 potential diarrhea treatment targets. TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and CAT were identified as important targets through visualizing the PPI network. Enrichment analysis demonstrated significant enrichment in the TNF signaling pathway, IL-17 signaling pathway, and PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. QJD showed beneficial effects, such as increased body weight, decreased fecal water content, and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration in the duodenum and colon, as well as maintaining the structure of the duodenum and colon. Metabolomic analysis revealed 32 differentially expressed metabolites in the control, model and QJD-H groups, including glucose, valine, and cysteine. Functional analysis indicated that differential metabolites were related to energy metabolism, including glucose metabolism, TCA cycle, and amino acid metabolism., Conclusion: QJD significantly increased body weight, decreased water content in feces, relieved inflammatory cell infiltration, maintained the structure of duodenum and colon. Objective: We analyzed the risk factors for hypotension in patients with hemodialysis-associated superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) and effectiveness of endovascular intervention in hypotension related to SVCS., Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study. A total of 194 maintenance hemodialysis patients diagnosed with SVCS who were admitted to the Department of Nephrology, West China Hospital of Sichuan University from January 2019 to December 2021 were selected and divided into a hypotension group and a nonhypotension group. Demographic and clinical data were compared. Hypotension simply refers to blood pressure levels of <90/60 mm Hg on a nondialysis day. All patients received endovascular intervention., Results: Hypotension was found in 85 of the 194 patients. The following factors were significantly different between the hypotension and nonhypotension groups: body mass index, history of hypertension, tunneled-cuffed catheter as the means of dialysis access, azygos ectasis, SVC stenosis of >70% or occlusion, occlusion at the cavitary junction, serum calcium, diastolic left ventricular (LV) posterior wall thickness, LV end-diastolic volume, stroke output, and LV ejection fraction. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that hypertension history (OR, 0.314; P = .027), tunneled-cuffed catheter as vascular access (OR, 3.997; P < .001), SVC stenosis of >70% or occlusion (OR, 5.243; P < .001), LV posterior wall thickness (OR, 0.772; P = .044), and serum calcium (OR, 0.146; P = .005) were independent risk factors for hypotension. The mean values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure after intravascular treatment were significantly elevated from those before intervention (P < .001). The primary patency rates of SVC were 66.8%, 58.7%, and 50.0% at 3, 6, and 12 months after the procedure., Conclusions: The incidence of hypotension in patients with hemodialysis-associated SVCS is high. The identification of risk factors of hemodialysis-related hypotension provides insight into potential treatment strategies. Objective: The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (MWA) and percutaneous sclerotherapy (PS) for the treatment of large hepatic hemangioma (LHH)., Methods: This retrospective study included 96 patients who underwent MWA ( n  = 54) and PS ( n  = 42) as first-line treatment for LHH in three tertiary hospitals from January 2016 to December 2021. Primary outcomes were technique efficacy rate (volume reduction rate [VRR] > 50% at 12 months), symptom relief rate at 12 months and local tumor progression (LTP). Secondary outcomes included procedure time, major complications, treatment sessions, cost and one-, two-, three-year VRR., Results: During a median follow-up of 36 months, the MWA group showed a higher technique efficacy rate (100% vs. 90.4%, p  = .018) and symptom relief rate (100% vs. 80%, p  = .123) than the PS group. The MWA group had fewer treatment sessions, higher one-, two- and three-year VRR, lower LTP rate (all p  < .05), longer procedure time and higher treatment costs than the PS group (both p  < .001). MWA shared a comparable major complications rate (1.8% vs. 2.4%, p  = .432) with PS. After multivariate analysis, the lesion's heterogeneity and maximum diameter >8.1 cm were independent risk factors for LTP (all p  < .05). In the PS group, lesions with a cumulative dose of bleomycin > 0.115 mg/cm 3 had a lower risk of LTP ( p  = .006)., Conclusions: Both MWA and PS treatments for large hepatic hemangioma are safe and effective, with MWA being superior in terms of efficacy.

Gene chip is a high-throughput technique for detecting specific DNA sequences by DNA or DNA-RNA complementary hybridization, among which SNP genotyping chips have been widely employed in the animal genetics and breeding, and have made great achievements in cattle (Bos taurus), pigs (Sus scrofa), sheep (Caprinae), chickens (Gallus gallus) and other livestock. However, genomic selection applied in production merely uses genomic information and cannot fully explain the molecular mechanism of complex traits genetics, which limits the accuracy of genomic selection. With the continuous progresses in epigenetic research, the development of commercial methylation chips and the application of the epigenome-wide association study (EWAS), DNA methylation has been extensively used to draw the causal connections between genetics and phenotypes. In the future, it is hopefully expected to develop methylation chips customized for livestock and poultry and explore methylation sites significantly related to economic traits of livestock and poultry through EWAS thereby extending the understanding of causal variation of complex traits. Combining methylation chips and SNP chips, we can capture the epigenomic and genomic information of livestock and poultry, interpret genetic variation more precisely, improve the accuracy of genome selection, and promote the fine evolution of molecular genetic breeding of livestock and poultry. In this review, we summarize the application of SNP chips and depict the prospects of the application of methylation chips in livestock and poultry. This review will provide valuable insights for further application of gene chips in farm animal breeding.

Accurately distinguishing between enantiomeric molecules is a fundamental challenge in the field of chemistry. However, there is still significant room for improvement in both the enantiomeric selectivity (K R(S) /K S(R) ) and binding strength of most reported macrocyclic chiral receptors to meet the demands of practical application scenarios. Herein, we synthesized a water-soluble conjugated tubular host-namely, corral[4]BINOL-using a chiral 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) derivative as the repeating unit. The conjugated chiral backbone endows corral[4]BINOL with good fluorescent emission (QY=34 % ) and circularly polarized luminescence (|g lum | up to 1.4×10 -3 ) in water. Notably, corral[4]BINOL exhibits high recognition affinity up to 8.6×10 10  M -1 towards achiral guests in water, and manifested excellent enantioselectivity up to 18.7 towards chiral substrates, both of which represent the highest values observed among chiral macrocycles in aqueous solution. Recently, dinoflagellate blooms have frequently occurred in the coastal waters of Fujian, East China Sea. In June 2022, a fish-killing bloom of Kareniaceae species occurred in this region. In this study, four species of Kareniaceae, namely, Karenia longicanalis, K. papilionacea, Karlodinium veneficum, and Karl. digitatum were identified from this bloom event based on the results of single-cell PCR and clone libraries, and intraspecies genetic diversity was found in the Karl. veneficum population. The results of acute toxicity assays of the bloom water to two zooplankton species (Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia salina) demonstrated this bloom event strongly inhibited their swimming capacities and survival. Aims: To investigate the effects of M-CSF on myocardial injury in mice after MI by regulating different types of cardiac macrophages through the P2X7R/NLRP3/IL-1β signal pathway., Methods: A total of 60 C57BL/6J WT mice were used, with the Sham Group subjected to ligation without ligation through the LAD, the MI model was prepared by ligation of the LAD in the MC Group and MM Group, with the M-CSF reagent (500 μg/kg/d) being given an intraperitoneal injection for the first 5 days after surgery in the MM Group. All mice were fed in a barrier environment for 1 week. After the study, myocardial tissues were collected and IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, MCP-1, IFN-α, ANP, BNP, β-MHC, Collage I, Collage III, P2X7R, NLRP3, IL-1β, Bax, Caspase 3, C-Casp 3, Bcl-2, M1/2 macrophage, the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes, and the collagen deposition were detected., Results: The inflammatory response was significantly lower in the MM Group, the cardiomyocyte apoptosis, fibrosis, and hypertrophy were inhibited compared to the MC Group, and the levels of P2X7R, NLRP3, and IL-1β were also statistically lower in the MM Group. Backgroud: The current diagnostic criteria for refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP) among Mycoplasma pneumoniae Pneumonia (MPP) are insufficient for early identification, and potentially delayed appropriate treatment. This study aimed to develop an effective individualized diagnostic prediction nomogram for pediatric RMPP., Methods: A total of 517 hospitalized children with MPP, including 131 with RMPP and 386 without RMPP (non-RMPP), treated at Lianyungang Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021 were retrospectively enrolled as a development (modeling) cohort to construct an RMPP prediction nomogram. Additionally, 322 pediatric patients with MPP (64 with RMPP and 258 with non-RMPP, who were treated at the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University from June 2020 to May 2022 were retrospectively enrolled as a validation cohort to assess the prediction accuracy of model. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify RMPP risk factors among patients with MPP. Nomogram were generated based on these risk factors using the rms package of R, and the predictive performance was evaluated based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and using decision curve analysis (DCA)., Results: Multivariate analysis revealed five significant independent predictors of RMPP among patients with MPP: age (hazard ratio [HR] 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-1.33, P = 0.038), fever duration (HR 1.34, 95%CI 1.20-1.50, P < 0.001), lymphocyte count (HR 0.45, 95%CI 0.23-0.89, P = 0.021), serum D-dimer (D-d) level (HR 1.70, 95%CI 1.16-2.49, P = 0.006), and pulmonary imaging score (HR 5.16, 95%CI 2.38-11.21, P < 0.001). The area under the ROC curve was 90.7% for the development cohort and 96.36% for the validation cohort. The internal and external verification calibration curves were almost linear with slopes of 1, and the DCA curve revealed a net benefit with the final predictive nomogram., Conclusion: This study proposes a predictive nomogram only based on five variables. The nomogram can be used for early identification of RMPP among pediatric patients with MPP, thereby facilitating more timely and effective intervention., (© 2023. The aerial root mealybug, Pseudococcus baliteus Lit (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is an important invasive and quarantine pest that poses a potential threat to fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. As a result, phytosanitary treatments are necessary to ensure the commodities of international trade are free from these pests. To determine the minimum absorbed dose required for phytosanitary irradiation (PI) application, irradiation dose-response and large-scale confirmatory tests were conducted. Eggs that were 2, 4, and 6 days old and late gravid females (containing 0-day-old eggs) of P. baliteus were X-ray irradiated with doses of 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 Gray (Gy). The efficacy of preventing egg-hatching (mortality) was compared using two-way ANOVA, 95% confidence interval overlapping and lethal dose ratio test in probit analysis. The radiotolerance sequence of mealybugs egg was found to be 0 < 2 ≈ 4 < 6-day-old eggs, and their estimated LD99.9968 values with 95% confidence interval were 132.0 (118.9-149.5), 137.6 (125.2-153.7), 145.5 (134.5-159.1), and 157.4 (144.6-173.6) Gy, respectively. Subsequently, target doses of 135 and 145 Gy were used in the confirmatory gamma radiation treatments. No F1 generation neonates developed from a total of 47,316 late females irradiated at the measured dose of 107.7-182.5 Gy, resulting in the treatment efficiency of 99.9937% at the 95% confidence level. Therefore, the highest dose of 183 Gy measured in the confirmatory tests is recommended as the minimum absorbed dose in PI treatment of P. baliteus for establishing national and international standards., (© The Author(s) 2023. It is well established that increased excitability of the presympathetic neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) during hypertension leads to heightened sympathetic outflow and hypertension. However, the mechanism underlying the overactivation of PVN presympathetic neurons remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of endogenous corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) on the excitability of presympathetic neurons in PVN using Western blot, arterial blood pressure (ABP) and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) recording, CRISPR/Cas9 technique and patch-clamp technique. The results showed that CRF protein expression in PVN was significantly upregulated in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) compared with normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Besides, PVN administration of exogenous CRF significantly increased RSNA, heart rate and ABP in WKY rats. In contrast, knockdown of upregulated CRF in PVN of SHRs inhibited CRF expression, led to membrane potential hyperpolarization, and decreased the frequency of current-evoked firings of PVN presympathetic neurons, which were reversed by incubation of exogenous CRF. Perfusion of rat brain slices with artificial cerebrospinal fluid containing CRF receptor 1 (CRFR1) blocker, NBI-35965, or CRF receptor 2 (CRFR2) blocker, Antisauvagine-30, showed that blocking CRFR1, but not CRFR2, hyperpolarized the membrane potential and inhibited the current-evoked firing of PVN presympathetic neurons in SHRs. However, blocking CRFR1 or CRFR2 did not affect the membrane potential and current-evoked firing of presympathetic neurons in WKY rats. Overall, these findings indicate that increased endogenous CRF release from PVN CRF neurons enhances the excitability of presympathetic neurons via activation of CRFR1 in SHRs.

Paracoccus marginatus is a highly polyphagous invasive pest that poses a significant quarantine threat to tropical and subtropical countries. Infested commodities in international trade should undergo phytosanitary treatment, and irradiation is recommended as a viable alternative to replace methyl bromide fumigation. Dose-response tests were conducted on the 2-, 4-, and 6-day-old eggs and gravid females of P . marginatus using the X-ray radiation doses of 15-105 Gy with an interval of 15 Gy. Radiotolerance was compared using ANOVA, fiducial overlapping and lethal dose ratio (LDR) test, resulting in no significant difference among treatments, except for the overall mortality and LDR at LD 90 (a dose causing 90% mortality at 95% confidence level). The estimated dose for LD 99.9968 was 176.5-185.2 Gy, which was validated in the confirmatory tests. No nymphs emerged from a total of 60,386 gravid females exposed to a gamma radiation dose range of 146.8-185.0 Gy in the confirmatory tests. The largest dose in confirmatory tests should be the minimum threshold for phytosanitary treatment, consequently, a minimum dose of 185 Gy is recommended for the phytosanitary irradiation treatment of papaya mealybug-infested commodities, ensuring a treatment efficacy of ≥99.9950% at 95% confidence level.

Background: As ultrasound-guided percutaneous liver biopsy (PLB) has become a standard and important method in the management of liver disease in our country, a periodical audit of the major complications is needed., Aim: To determine the annual incidence of major complications following ultrasound-guided PLB and to identify variables that are significantly associated with an increased risk of major complications., Methods: A total of 1857 consecutive cases of PLB were included in our hospital from January 2021 to December 2021. The major complication rate and all-cause 30-d mortality rate were determined. Multivariate analyses were performed by logistic regression to investigate the risk factors associated with major complications and all-cause 30-d mortality following ultrasound-guided PLB., Results: In this audit of 1857 liver biopsies, 10 cases (0.53%) of major complications occurred following ultrasound-guided PLB. The overall all-cause mortality rate at 30 d after PLB was 0.27% (5 cases). Two cases (0.11%) were attributed to major hemorrhage within 7 d after liver biopsy. Fibrinogen less than 2 g/L [odds ratio (OR): 17.226; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.647-112.102; P = 0.003], post-biopsy hemoglobin level (OR: 0.963; 95%CI: 0.942-0.985; P = 0.001), obstructive jaundice (OR: 6.698; 95%CI: 1.133-39.596; P = 0.036), application of anticoagulants/antiplatelet medications (OR: 24.078; 95%CI: 1.678-345.495; P = 0.019) and age (OR: 1.096; 95%CI: 1.012-1.187; P = 0.025) were statistically associated with the incidence of major complications after PLB., Conclusion: In conclusion, the results of this annual audit confirmed that ultrasound-guided PLB can be performed safely, with a major complication rate within the accepted range. Scaling up superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) into a large array for imaging applications is the current pursuit. Although various readout architectures have been proposed, they cannot resolve multiple-photon detections (MPDs) currently, which limits the operation of the SNSPD arrays at high photon flux. In this study, we focused on the readout ambiguity of a superconducting nanowire single-photon imager applying time-of-flight multiplexing readout. The results showed that image distortion depended on both the incident photon flux and the imaging object. By extracting multiple-photon detections on idle pixels, which were virtual because of the incorrect mapping from the ambiguous readout, a correction method was proposed. An improvement factor of 1.3~9.3 at a photon flux of µ = 5 photon/pulse was obtained, which indicated that joint development of the pixel design and restoration algorithm could compensate for the readout ambiguity and increase the dynamic range.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a very common cardiac arrhythmia with an estimated prevalence of 33.5 million patients globally. It is associated with an increased risk of death, stroke and peripheral embolism. Although genetic studies have identified a growing number of genes associated with AF, the definitive impact of these genetic findings is yet to be established. Several mechanisms, including electrical, structural and neural remodelling of atrial tissue, have been proposed to contribute to the development of AF. Despite over a century of exploration, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying AF have not been fully established. Current antiarrhythmic drugs are associated with a significant rate of adverse events and management of AF using ablation is not optimal, especially in cases of persistent AF. This review discusses recent advances in our understanding and management of AF, including new concepts of epidemiology, genetics and pathophysiological mechanisms. We review the current status of antiarrhythmic drug therapy for AF, new potential agents, as well as mechanism-based AF ablation. Backgrounds: Percutaneous ultrasound (US) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided pancreatic biopsies are widely accepted in the diagnosis of pancreatic diseases. Studies comparing the diagnostic performance of US- and EUS-guided pancreatic biopsies are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the diagnostic yields of US- and EUS-guided pancreatic biopsies and identify the risk factors for inconclusive biopsies., Methods: Of the 1074 solid pancreatic lesions diagnosed from January 2017 to February 2021 in our center, 275 underwent EUS-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA), and 799 underwent US-guided core needle biopsy (US-CNB/FNA). The outcomes were inconclusive pathological biopsy, diagnostic accuracy and the need for repeat biopsy. All of the included factors and diagnostic performances of both US-CNB/FNA and EUS-FNA were compared, and the independent predictors for the study outcomes were identified., Results: The diagnostic accuracy was 89.8% for EUS-FNA and 95.2% for US-CNB/FNA (P = 0.001). Biopsy under EUS guidance [odds ratio (OR) = 1.808, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.083-3.019; P = 0.024], lesion size < 2 cm (OR = 2.069, 95% CI: 1.145-3.737; P = 0.016), hypoechoic appearance (OR = 0.274, 95% CI: 0.097-0.775; P = 0.015) and non-pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma carcinoma (PDAC) diagnosis (OR = 2.637, 95% CI: 1.563-4.449; P < 0.001) were identified as factors associated with inconclusive pathological biopsy. Hypoechoic appearance (OR = 0.236, 95% CI: 0.064-0.869; P = 0.030), lesions in the uncinate process of the pancreas (OR = 3.506, 95% CI: 1.831-6.713; P < 0.001) and non-PDAC diagnosis (OR = 2.622, 95% CI: 1.278-5.377; P = 0.009) were independent predictors for repeat biopsy. Biopsy under EUS guidance (OR = 2.024, 95% CI: 1.195-3.429; P = 0.009), lesions in the uncinate process of the pancreas (OR = 1.776, 95% CI: 1.014-3.108; P = 0.044) and hypoechoic appearance (OR = 0.127, 95% CI: 0.047-0.347; P < 0.001) were associated with diagnostic accuracy., Conclusions: In conclusion, both percutaneous US- and EUS-guided biopsies of solid pancreatic lesions are safe and effective; though the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNA is inferior to US-CNB/FNA. Objective: To observe the effect of herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion (Moxi) on the expressions of inflammatory factors and M1/M2 polarization in colonic mucosal macrophages in Crohn's disease (CD) rats, so as to explore its underlying mechanisms in the treatment of CD., Methods: Forty male SD rats were randomly divided into normal, model, Moxi and medication groups ( n =10). The CD model was established by enema of 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) solution (5%TNBS∶50% alcohol=2∶1, 3 mL/kg), once every 7 days, 4 times altogether. For rats of the Moxi group, cake-partitioned moxibustion was given to "Tianshu" (ST25) and "Qihai" (CV6), two moxa-cones for each acupoint every time, once daily for 10 days. For rats of the medication group, intragastric perfusion of mesalazine solution was given twice daily for 10 days. After the treatment, the colonic mucosa tissue was sampled, and the macrophages were isolated, purified and cultured. The pathological changes of colon tissues were observed by H.E. staining. The ultrastructure of colon tissue was observed by transmission electron microscopy. The expression levels of α7nAChR, NF-κB p65 and TNF-α in colon mucosal macrophages were detected by Western blot. The number of M1 and M2 macrophages in colon mucosa was detected by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence assay., Results: Compared with the normal group, the colon tissue of rats presented huge ulceration and inflammatory manifestations, the junction of colon epithelial cells was loose, the structure of organelles was damaged; the expression level of α7nAChR in macrophages of colon mucosa was significantly decreased ( P <0.01), while the expression levels of NF-κB p65 and TNF-α, and the number of M1 and M2 macrophages were increased ( P <0.01, P <0.05) in the model group. In comparison with the model group, the morphology and structure of colon mucosa tissues of rats in Moxi and medication groups were improved; the expression level of α7nAChR, the number of M2 macrophage in colon mucosa were significantly increased ( P <0.01, P <0.05), while the expression levels of NF-κB p65 and TNF-α, and the number of M1 macrophage were significantly decreased ( P <0.01, P <0.05) in both the Moxi and medication groups., Conclusion: Herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion may inhibit NF-κB activation by up-regulating the expression level of α7nAChR to promote the polarization of macrophages from M1 to M2 type, and reduce the proportion of M1 macrophages, inhibit the expression of TNF-α in colonic mucosa of CD rats, so as to relieve the intestinal inflammation.

Background: The hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is a group of rare blood disorders characterized by persistent eosinophilia and damage to multiple organs. HES can be either primary, secondary or idiopathic. Secondary HES are commonly caused by parasitic infections, allergic reactions or cancer. We described a pediatric case of HES associated with liver damage and multiple thrombi. A 12-year-old boy with eosinophilia was complicated with severe thrombocytopenia, liver damage, portal vein, splenic vein, and superior mesenteric vein thromboses. The thrombi recanalized after treatment with methylprednisolone succinate and low molecular weight heparin. No side effects appeared after 1-month., Conclusions: Corticosteroids should be used at an early stage of HES to prevent further damage to vital organs. Anticoagulants should be recommended only in cases with thrombosis which should be actively screened as a part of evaluation of end organ damage., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Parasitic wasps are abundant and diverse Hymenoptera insects that lay their eggs inside or on the external surface of the host and inject venom into the host to create a more favorable environment for the larvae to survive and regulate the host's immunity, metabolism, and development. But research on the composition of egg parasitoid venom is very limited. In this study, we used a combination of transcriptomic and proteomic approaches to identify the protein fractions of the venom in both eupelmid egg parasitoids, Anastatus japonicus and Mesocomys trabalae . We identified 3422 up-regulated venom gland genes (UVGs) in M. trabalae and 3709 in A. japonicus and analyzed their functions comparatively. By proteome sequencing, we identified 956 potential venom proteins in the venom pouch of M. trabalae , of which 186 were contained in UVGs simultaneously. A total of 766 proteins were detected in the venom of A. japonicus , of which 128 venom proteins were highly expressed in the venom glands. At the same time, the functional analysis of these identified venom proteins was carried out separately. We found the venom proteins in M. trabalae are well known but not in A. japonicus, which may be related to the host range. In conclusion, identifying venom proteins in both egg parasitoid species provides a database for studying the function of egg parasitoid venom and its parasitic mechanism.

Precisely acquiring the timing information of individual X-ray photons is important in both fundamental research and practical applications. The timing precision of commonly used X-ray single-photon detectors remains in the range of one hundred picoseconds to microseconds. In this work, we report on high-timing-precision detection of single X-ray photons through the fast transition to the normal state from the superconductive state of superconducting nanowires. We successfully demonstrate a free-running X-ray single-photon detector with a timing resolution of 20.1 ps made of 100-nm-thick niobium nitride film with an active area of 50  μ m by 50  μ m. By using a repeated differential timing measurement on two adjacent X-ray single-photon detectors, we demonstrate a precision of 0.87 ps in the arrival-time difference of X-ray photon measurements. Therefore, our work significantly enhances the timing precision in X-ray photon counting, opening a new niche for ultrafast X-ray photonics and many associated applications., (© The Author(s) 2023. Enriched environment (EE) is an important animal experimental paradigm to decipher gene-environment interaction. It is thought to be efficient in aiding recovery from certain metabolism disorders or cognitive impairments. Recently, the effects of EE during adolescence in mice gradually draw much attention. We first established an EE model in adolescent mice, dissected lipid metabolism, and further examined baseline level of anxiety and depression by multiple behavioral tests, including open field test (OFT), elevated zero maze (EZM), tail suspension test (TST), and forced swimming test (FST). EE mice exhibited lower weights, lower cholesterol than standard housing (SH) mice. Behaviorally, EE mice traveled more distance and had higher velocity than SH mice in OFT and EZM. Besides, EE mice showed reduced anxiety levels in OFT and EZM. Furthermore, EE mice also had less immobility time than SH mice in TST and FST. Thus, these results suggest that EE during adolescence has metabolic and behavioral benefits in mice.

Immune and inflammatory responses have an important function in the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, little is known about the immune landscape in peripheral circulation in patients with high-altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH). We apply single-cell transcriptomics to characterize the monocytes that are significantly enriched in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of HAPH patients. We discover an increase in C1 (non-classical) and C2 (intermediate) monocytes in PBMCs and a decrease in hypoxia-inducible transcription factor-1α (HIF-1α) in all monocyte subsets associated with HAPH. In addition, we demonstrate that similar immune adaptations may exist in HAPH and PH. Overall, we characterize an immune cell atlas of the peripheral blood in HAPH patients. Objective: Arsenic (As) and fluoride (F) are two of the most common elements contaminating groundwater resources. A growing number of studies have found that As and F can cause neurotoxicity in infants and children, leading to cognitive, learning, and memory impairments. However, early biomarkers of learning and memory impairment induced by As and/or F remain unclear. In the present study, the mechanisms by which As and/or F cause learning memory impairment are explored at the multi-omics level (microbiome and metabolome)., Methods: We stablished an SD rats model exposed to arsenic and/or fluoride from intrauterine to adult period., Results: Arsenic and/fluoride exposed groups showed reduced neurobehavioral performance and lesions in the hippocampal CA1 region. 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that As and/or F exposure significantly altered the composition and diversity of the gut microbiome，featuring the Lachnospiraceae&#95;NK4A136&#95;group, Ruminococcus&#95;1, Prevotellaceae&#95;NK3B31&#95;group, [Eubacterium]&#95;xylanophilum&#95;group. Metabolome analysis showed that As and/or F-induced learning and memory impairment may be related to tryptophan, lipoic acid, glutamate, gamma-aminobutyric acidergic (GABAergic) synapse, and arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism. The Chinese white wax scale insect, Ericerus pela Chavannes (Hemiptera: Coccidae), is one of the scale insects with great economic value and has been dispersed and reared in China for over one thousand years. Its mitochondrial genome provides essential information for the molecular identification and genetic study of this species. We assembled the complete mitochondrial genome of E. pela based on PacBio sequencing and analyzed its genomic features. The genome was 17,766 bp in length with 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and two rRNA genes. The analysis results showed E. pela had significant gene rearrangements involving tRNAs compared with other Coccoidea species. Furthermore, E. pela 's nine tRNAs were identified to have obvious truncated structures. The phylogenetic tree compiled of the species showed a long branch of the Coccoidea lineage, which indicated the high evolutionary rate in this group. Our study revealed the mitochondrial characteristics of E. pela and enriched the mitochondrial genetic information on Coccoidea species. It also determined the occurrence of gene rearrangement for the species in this superfamily.
