Metaflammation is low-grade inflammation triggered by chronic metabolic imbalance and caused by dysregulated metabolites in metabolic inflammatory syndrome (MIS), which includes four diseases: obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), atherosclerosis (AS), and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD, recently proposed to be replaced by metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, MASLD). These diseases exhibit apparent sex dimorphism as regards MIS. Estrogen not only plays a crucial role in gender differences in adults but also possesses an anti-inflammatory effect on many metabolic diseases. In this study, we present a prediction of the differential proteins and signal transduction of estrogen in MIS through network pharmacology and review the validated studies on obesity, T2DM, AS, and NAFLD. Subsequently, we compared them to obtain valuable targets, identify current gaps, and provide perspectives for future research on the mechanisms of estrogen in metaflammation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Like alien plant invasion, range expansion of native plants may threaten biodiversity and economies, rendering them native invaders. Variation in abiotic and biotic conditions across a large geographic scale greatly affects variation in traits and interactions with herbivores of native plant invaders, which is an interesting yet mostly unexplored issue. We used a common garden experiment to compare defensive/nutritional traits and palatability to generalist herbivores of 20 native (23.64° N–30.18° N) and introduced range (31.58° N–36.87° N) populations of Reynoutria japonica, which is a native invader following range expansion in China. We analyzed the relationships among herbivore pressure, climate, plant chloroplast haplotypes, leaf traits, and herbivore performance. Of the 16 variables tested, we observed range differences in 11 variables and latitudinal clines in nine variables. In general, herbivores performed better on the introduced plants than on the native plants, and better on the high‐latitude plants than on the low‐latitude plants within the introduced populations. Three key traits (leaf thickness, specific leaf area, and carbon‐to‐nitrogen [C:N] ratio) determined palatability to herbivores and were significantly associated with temperature and/or precipitation of plant provenance as well as with plant haplotypes but not with herbivore pressure. Our results revealed a causal sequence from plant‐range‐based environmental forces and genetic context to plant quality and palatability to herbivores in R. japonica. These findings suggest a post‐introduction evolution of R. japonica, which may partly explain the colonization success of this important native, but invasive plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The immune system appears to play a crucial role in how breast cancer responds to chemotherapy. In this study, we investigated a peripheral marker of immune and inflammation named the neutrophil to albumin ratio (NAR) to explore its potential relationship with pathological complete response (pCR) in locally advanced breast cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 212 consecutive breast cancer patients who received NAC. The NAR was calculated by examining the complete blood cell count and albumin level in peripheral blood before starting NAC. Through ROC curve analysis, we determined the optimal cutoff value for NAR as 0.0877. We used Pearson's chi-square test or Fisher's exact test to evaluate the relationship between NAR and pCR, as well as other clinical and pathological characteristics. Logistic regression models were employed for univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: The results of both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that NAR was associated with tumor pathological regression. The NAR high group had a higher pCR rate compared to the NAR low group (OR 3.127 [95% CI 1.545– 6.328]; p = 0.002). Conclusion: According to this study, it was observed that patients with breast cancer who had high levels of NAR were more likely to achieve pCR when undergoing NAC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is a safe and effective method for preventing embolic events in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. However, peri-device leaks (PDLs) are sometimes unavoidable. Controversy exists regarding whether PDLs lead to embolic events. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the association between PDLs and embolic events, including ischaemic stroke, transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs), and systemic embolism (SE). Methods: We conducted a systematic search of the PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases for studies published up to September 25, 2022, to compare the rate of ischaemic stroke/TIA/SE between the PDL group and the non-PDL group after LAAC. Results: Thirteen studies comprising 54,405 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The PDL group detected by transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) had a significantly higher rate of ischaemic stroke/TIA/SE than the non-PDL group (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.08–1.33, p = 0.0009). However, no difference in ischaemic stroke/TIA/SE was found between the PDL and non-PDL subgroups of the cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) group (OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 0.51–2.50, p = 0.77). CCTA and TEE showed different rates of PDL detection, with the CCTA group having a higher rate of PDL detection (p < 0.0001), especially for trivial leaks. Conclusions: PDL detected by TEE increases the risk of embolic events after LAAC. However, no association was found between PDL and ischaemic stroke/TIA/SE in the CCTA group, which showed a higher rate of PDL detection than TEE, particularly for trivial leaks. In the future, CCTA may be used to explore the relationship between PDL size and ischaemic stroke/TIA/SE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
