Abstract

We present an analysis on the heavy flavor hadron decay electrons with charm and beauty contributions decomposed via a data driven method in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV at LHC. The transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ spectra, nuclear modification factor $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ and azimuthal anisotropic flow $v_2$ distributions of electrons from charm and beauty decays are obtained. We find that the electron $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ from charm ($R_{\mathrm{AA}}^{\mathrm{c\rightarrow e}}$) and beauty ($R_{\mathrm{AA}}^{\mathrm{b\rightarrow e}}$) decays are suppressed at $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ $>$ 2.0 and $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ $>$ 3.0 GeV/$c$ in Pb+Pb collisions, respectively, which indicates that charm and beauty interact with and lose their energy in the hot-dense medium. A less suppression of electron $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ from beauty decays than that from charm decays at 2.0 $<$ $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ $<$ 8.0 GeV/$c$ is observed, which is consistent with the mass-dependent partonic energy loss scenario. A non-zero electron $v_2$ from beauty decays ($v_{2}^{\mathrm{b\rightarrow e}}$) is observed and in good agreement with ALICE measurement. At low $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ region from 1.0 to 3.0 GeV/$c$, a discrepancy between RHIC and LHC results is observed with 68\% confidence level, which suggests different degree of thermalization of beauty quark under different temperatures of the medium. At 3.0 GeV/$c$ $<$ $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ $<$ 7.0 GeV/$c$, $v_{2}^{\mathrm{b\rightarrow e}}$ deviates from a number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling hypothesis, which favors that beauty quark is unlikely thermalized in heavy-ion collisions at LHC energy., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

17. Continuous movement quantification in preterm infants using fiber mat: Advancing long-term monitoring in hospital settings

Abstract

Movement patterns in preterm infants can offer crucial insights into their physiological state including maturational development and sleep. These patterns can also serve as early indicators for potential deteriorations, such as cerebral palsy, sepsis, and epilepsy. In this study, we investigated a novel 2-D optical fiber mat system for the automated monitoring of infant movement, thereby enhancing the efficiency and safety of neonatal care in both the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and neonatal medium care unit (NMCU). The 20 preterm infants admitted to both NICU and NMCU were enrolled in the study. They underwent monitoring for a duration of 2–5 h using both an optical fiber mat and a camera which provided valuable movement annotations. The signals from the fiber mat were quantified, selected, and then integrated into a consolidated movement signal. This signal was subsequently transformed into binary states, distinguishing between “movement” and “still” based on the distribution of the movement signal. The proposed fiber mat system achieved a mean [standard deviation (SD)] area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) of 0.91 (0.05), and an F-score of 0.73 (0.09), when compared with manually annotated video recordings. This study demonstrates the feasibility of continuous movement monitoring for preterm infants within hospital settings. It illustrates the promising potential to evolve into a predictive tool for monitoring patient deterioration through the fusion of physiological information in both hospital environments and within the comfort of homes.

Abstract

First published October 30, 2009; doi: 10.1152/ajplung.00064.2009.--Since thrombin activation of endothelial cells (ECs) is well-known to increase endothelial permeability by disassembly of adherens junctions (AJs) and actinomyosin contractility mechanism involving myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation, we investigated the effects of bone marrow-derived progenitor cells (BMPCs) on the thrombin-induced endothelial permeability response. We observed that addition of BMPCs to endothelial monolayers at a fixed ratio prevented the thrombin-induced decrease in transendothelial electrical resistance, a measure of AJ integrity, and increased mouse pulmonary microvessel filtration coefficient, a measure of transvascular liquid permeability. The barrier protection was coupled to increased vascular endothelial cadherin expression and increased Cdc42 activity in ECs. Using small interfering RNA (siRNA) to deplete Cdc42 in ECs, we demonstrated a key role of Cdc42 in signaling the BMPC-induced endothelial barrier protection. Endothelial integrity induced by BMPCs was also secondary to inhibition of MLC phosphorylation in ECs. Thus BMPCs interacting with ECs prevent thrombin-induced endothelial hyperpermeability by a mechanism involving AJ barrier annealing, inhibition of MLC phosphorylation, and activation of Cdc42. adherens junctions; Cdc42; vascular endothelial cadherin; myosin light chain

Abstract

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is an unremitting disease defined by a progressive increase in pulmonary vascular resistance leading to right-sided heart failure. Using mice with genetic deletions of caveolin 1 (Cav1) and eNOS (Nos3), we demonstrate here that chronic eNOS activation secondary to loss of caveolin-1 can lead to PH. Consistent with a role for eNOS in the pathogenesis of PH, the pulmonary vascular remodeling and PH phenotype of Cav1-/- mice were absent in Cav1-/-Nos3-/- mice. Further, treatment of Cav1-/- mice with either MnTMPyP (a superoxide scavenger) or L-NAME (a NOS inhibitor) reversed their pulmonary vascular pathology and PH phenotype. Activation of eNOS in Cav1-/- lungs led to the impairment of PKG activity through tyrosine nitration. Moreover, the PH phenotype in Cav1-/- lungs could be rescued by overexpression of PKG-1. The clinical relevance of the data was indicated by the observation that lung tissue from patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension demonstrated increased eNOS activation and PKG nitration and reduced caveolin-1 expression. Together, these data show that loss of caveolin-1 leads to hyperactive eNOS and subsequent tyrosine nitration--dependent impairment of PKG activity, which results in PH.
