Weyl points are often believed to appear in pairs with opposite chirality. In this work, we show by first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis that single Weyl phonons with linear dispersion and double Weyl phonons with quadratic dispersion are simultaneously present between two specific phonon branches in realistic materials with trigonal or hexagonal lattices. These phonon Weyl points are guaranteed to locate at high-symmetry points due to the screw rotational symmetry, forming a unique triangular Weyl complex. In sharp contrast to conventional Weyl systems with surface arcs terminated at the projections of a pair of Weyl points with opposite chirality, the phonon surface arcs of the unconventional triangular Weyl complex connect the projections of one double Weyl point and two single Weyl points. Importantly, the phonon surface arcs originating from the triangular Weyl complex are extremely long and span the entire surface Brillouin-zone. Furthermore, there are only nontrivial phonon surface states across the iso-frequency surface, which facilitates their detection in experiments and further applications. Nontrivial low-energy excitations of crystalline solids have insightfully strengthened understanding of elementary particles in quantum field theory. Usually, topological quasiparticles are mainly focused on fermions in topological semimetals. In this work, we alternatively show by first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis that ideal type-II Weyl phonons are present in zinc-blende cadmium telluride (CdTe), a well-known II-VI semiconductor. Importantly, these type-II Weyl phonons originate from the inversion between the longitudinal acoustic and transverse optical branches. Symmetry guarantees the type-II Weyl points to lie along the high-symmetry lines at the boundaries of Brillouin zone even with breaking the inversion symmetry, exhibiting the robustness of protected phonon features. The nontrivial phonon surface states and surface arcs projected on the semi-finite (001) and (111) surfaces are investigated. The phonon surface arcs connecting the Weyl points with opposite chirality, guaranteed to be very long, are clearly visible. Self-sensing composites performance largely relies on the sensing fillers property and interface. Our previous work demonstrates that the microwires can enable self-sensing composites but with limited damage detection capabilities. Here, we propose an optimization strategy capitalizing on dual interfaces formed between glass-coat and metallic core (inner interface) and epoxy matrix (outer interface), which can be decoupled to serve different purposes when experiencing stress; outer interfacial modification is successfully applied with inner interface condition preserved to maintain the crucial circular domain structure for better sensitivity. We found out that the damage detection capability is prescribed by periodical structural integrity parameterized by cracks number and location in the case of damaged wires; it can also be optimized by stress transfer efficiency with silane treated interface in the case of damaged matrix. The proposed self-sensing composites enabled by a properly conditioned dual-interfaces are promising for real-time monitoring in restricted and safety-critical environments., Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Carbon, a basic versatile element in our universe, exhibits rich varieties of allotropic phases, most of which possess promising nontrivial topological fermions. In this work, we identify a distinct topological phonon phase in a realistic carbon allotrope with a body-centered cubic structure, termed bcc-C$_{8}$. We show by symmetry arguments and effective model analysis that there are three intersecting phonon nodal rings perpendicular to each other in different planes. The intersecting phonon nodal rings are protected by time-reversal and inversion symmetries, which quantize the corresponding Berry phase into integer multiples of $\pi$. Unlike the electron systems, the phonon nodal rings in bcc-C$_{8}$ are guaranteed to remain gapless due to the lack of spin-orbital coupling. The nearly flat drumhead surface states projected on semi-infinite (001) and (110) surfaces of bcc-C$_{8}$ are clearly visible. Our findings not only discover promising nodal ring phonons in a carbon allotrope, but also provide emergent avenues for exploring topological phonons beyond fermionic electrons in carbon-allotropic structures with attractive features., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic topological materials have recently drawn significant importance and interest, due to their topologically nontrivial electronic structure within spontaneous magnetic moments and band inversion. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose that chromium dioxide, in its ferromagnetic pyrite structure, can realize one pair of type-II Weyl points between the $N$th and $(N+1)$th bands, where $N$ is the total number of valence electrons per unit cell. Other Weyl points between the $(N-1)$th and $N$th bands also appear close to the Fermi level due to the complex topological electronic band structure. The symmetry analysis elucidates that the Weyl points arise from a triply-degenerate point splitting due to the mirror reflection symmetry broken in the presence of spin-orbital coupling, which is equivalent to an applied magnetic field along the direction of magnetization. The Weyl points located on the magnetic axis are protected by the three-fold rotational symmetry. The corresponding Fermi arcs projected on both (001) and (110) surfaces are calculated as well and observed clearly. This finding opens a wide range of possible experimental realizations of type-II Weyl fermions in a system with time-reversal breaking., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We propose that the topological semimetal features can co-exist with ferromagnetic ground state in vanadium-phosphorous-oxide $\beta$-V$_2$OPO$_4$ compound from first-principles calculations. In this magnetic system with inversion symmetry, the direction of magnetization is able to manipulate the symmetric protected band structures from a node-line type to a Weyl one in the presence of spin-orbital-coupling. The node-line semimetal phase is protected by the mirror symmetry with the reflection-invariant plane perpendicular to magnetic order. Within mirror symmetry breaking due to the magnetization along other directions, the gapless node-line loop will degenerate to only one pair of Weyl points protected by the rotational symmetry along the magnetic axis, which are largely separated in momentum space. Such Weyl semimetal phase provides a nice candidate with the minimum number of Weyl points in a condensed matter system. The results of surface band calculations confirm the non-trivial topology of this proposed compound. This findings provide a realistic candidate for the investigation of topological semimetals with time-reversal symmetry breaking, particularly towards the realization of quantum anomalous Hall effect in Weyl semimetals., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Resistively Detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (RD-NMR) has been used to investigate a two-subband electron system in a regime where quantum Hall pseudo-spin ferromagnetic (QHPF) states are prominently developed. It reveals that the easy-axis QHPF state around the total filling factor $\nu =4 $ can be detected by the RD-NMR measurement. Approaching one of the Landau level (LL) crossing points, the RD-NMR signal strength and the nuclear spin relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ enhance significantly, a signature of low energy spin excitations. However, the RD-NMR signal at another identical LL crossing point is surprisingly missing which presents a puzzle.

We investigate the topological structure of the decimal expansions of the three famous naturally occurring irrational numbers, $\pi$, $e$, and golden ratio, by explicitly calculating the diversity of the pair distributions of the ten digits ranging from 0 to 9. And we find that there is a universal two-phase behavior, which collapses into a single curve with a power law phenomenon. We further reveal that the two-phase behavior is closely related to general aspects of phase transitions in physical systems. It is then numerically shown that such characteristics originate from an intrinsic property of genuine random distribution of the digits in decimal expansions. Thus, mathematical irrational numbers are not so physically irrational as long as they have such an intrinsic property., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Temperature dependence of the longitudinal and Hall resistance is studied in the regime of localization-delocalization transition. We carry out measurements of a scaling exponent $\kappa$ in the Landau level mixing region at several filling factors. The localization exponent $\gamma$ is extracted using an approach based on the variable range hopping theory. The values of $\gamma$ and $\kappa$ are found to be universal, independent of filling factor in our sample. We can conclude that although Landau level mixing can change the degeneracy of a quantum Hall state, the value of the scaling exponent remains the same for a given sample that contains a fixed disorder profile., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

In condensed matter physics, the study of electronic states with SU(N) symmetry has attracted considerable and growing attention in recent years, as systems with such a symmetry can often have a spontaneous symmetry-breaking effect giving rise to a novel ground state. For example, pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet of broken SU(2) symmetry has been realized by bringing two Landau levels close to degeneracy in a bilayer quantum Hall system. In the past several years, the exploration of collective states in other multi-component quantum Hall systems has emerged. Here we show the conventional pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnetic states with broken SU(2) symmetry collapsed rapidly into an unexpected state with broken SU(4) symmetry, by in-plane magnetic field in a two-subband GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system at filling factor around $\nu=4$. Within a narrow tilting range angle of 0.5 degrees, the activation energy increases as much as 12 K. While the origin of this puzzling observation remains to be exploited, we discuss the possibility of a long-sought pairing state of electrons with a four-fold degeneracy., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures
