We introduce an innovative approach to enhancing the empirical risk minimization (ERM) process in model training through a refined reweighting scheme of the training data to enhance fairness. This scheme aims to uphold the sufficiency rule in fairness by ensuring that optimal predictors maintain consistency across diverse sub-groups. We employ a bilevel formulation to address this challenge, wherein we explore sample reweighting strategies. Unlike conventional methods that hinge on model size, our formulation bases generalization complexity on the space of sample weights. We discretize the weights to improve training speed. The study of exciton-polarons has offered profound insights into the many-body interactions between bosonic excitations and their immersed Fermi sea within layered heterostructures. However, little is known about the properties of exciton polarons with interlayer interactions. Here through magneto-optical reflectance contrast measurements, we experimentally investigate interlayer Fermi polarons for 2s excitons in WSe$_2$/graphene heterostructures, where the excited exciton states (2s) in the WSe$_2$ layer are dressed by free charge carriers of the adjacent graphene layer in the Landau quantization regime. First, such a system enables an optical detection of integer and fractional quantum Hall states (e.g. $\nu=\pm1/3$, $\pm$2/3) of monolayer graphene. Furthermore, we observe that the 2s state evolves into two distinct branches, denoted as attractive and repulsive polarons, when graphene is doped out of the incompressible quantum Hall gaps. A longstanding challenge in mental well-being support is the reluctance of people to adopt psychologically beneficial activities, often due to lack of motivation, low perceived trustworthiness, and limited personalization of recommendations. Chatbots have shown promise in promoting positive mental health practices, yet their rigid interaction flows and less human-like conversational experiences present significant limitations. In this work, we explore whether the anthropomorphic design (both LLM's persona design and conversational experience design) can enhance users' perception of the system and their willingness to adopt mental well-being activity recommendations. To this end, we introduce Sunnie, an anthropomorphic LLM-based conversational agent designed to offer personalized well-being support through multi-turn conversation and recommend practical actions grounded in positive psychology and social psychology. An empirical user study comparing the user experience with Sunnie and with a traditional survey-based activity recommendation system suggests that the anthropomorphic characteristics of Sunnie significantly enhance users' perception of the system and the overall usability; nevertheless, users' willingness to adopt activity recommendations did not change significantly., Comment: In Submission

The helicity correlation of two back-to-back hadrons is a powerful tool that makes it possible to probe the longitudinal spin transfer, $G_{1L}$, in unpolarized hadronic collisions. In this work, we investigate the helicity correlation of back-to-back dihadrons produced in photon-nucleus collisions with both space-like and quasireal photons and explore its potential in understanding the flavor dependence of spin-dependent fragmentation functions. We present helicity amplitudes of partonic scatterings with both virtual and real photons and make numerical predictions for the dihadron helicity correlations at the future Electron Ion Collider experiment and the current RHIC/LHC ultra-peripheral collision experiment. We develop a stochastic inventory system which accounts for the limited patience of backlogged customers. While limited patience is a feature that is closer to the nature of unmet demand, our model also unifies the classic backlogging and lost-sales inventory systems which are special cases of the one we propose. We establish the uniform (asymptotic) optimality of the base-stock policy when both demand and patience distributions are known. When the backlogged demands become unobservable, we introduce a novel policy family that operates without backlogged demands information, and prove that it can approach the cost efficiency of the optimal policy in the system when the demand and patience distributions are known. Finally, we consider an online inventory control problem in which backlogged demand is unobservable and demand and patience distributions are also not known, and develop a UCB-type algorithm that yields a near-optimal policy. The regret bounds given by the algorithm are provably tight within the planning horizon, and are comparable to the state-of-the-art results in the literature, even in the face of partial and biased observations and weaker system ergodicity.

The unequal representation of different groups in a sample population can lead to discrimination of minority groups when machine learning models make automated decisions. To address these issues, fairness-aware machine learning jointly optimizes two (or more) metrics aiming at predictive effectiveness and low unfairness. However, the inherent under-representation of minorities in the data makes the disparate treatment of subpopulations less noticeable and difficult to deal with during learning. In this paper, we propose a novel adversarial reweighting method to address such \emph{representation bias}. To balance the data distribution between the majority and the minority groups, our approach deemphasizes samples from the majority group. To minimize empirical risk, our method prefers samples from the majority group that are close to the minority group as evaluated by the Wasserstein distance. Our theoretical analysis shows the effectiveness of our adversarial reweighting approach. Experiments demonstrate that our approach mitigates bias without sacrificing classification accuracy, outperforming related state-of-the-art methods on image and tabular benchmark datasets.

The importance of achieving fairness in machine learning models cannot be overstated. Recent research has pointed out that fairness should be examined from a causal perspective, and several fairness notions based on the on Pearl's causal framework have been proposed. In this paper, we construct a reweighting scheme of datasets to address causal fairness. Our approach aims at mitigating bias by considering the causal relationships among variables and incorporating them into the reweighting process. The proposed method adopts two neural networks, whose structures are intentionally used to reflect the structures of a causal graph and of an interventional graph. The two neural networks can approximate the causal model of the data, and the causal model of interventions. Furthermore, reweighting guided by a discriminator is applied to achieve various fairness notions. Counterfactual Explanations (CEs) help address the question: How can the factors that influence the prediction of a predictive model be changed to achieve a more favorable outcome from a user's perspective? Thus, they bear the potential to guide the user's interaction with AI systems since they represent easy-to-understand explanations. To be applicable, CEs need to be realistic and actionable. In the literature, various methods have been proposed to generate CEs. However, the majority of research on CEs focuses on classification problems where questions like "What should I do to get my rejected loan approved?" are raised. In practice, answering questions like "What should I do to increase my salary?" are of a more regressive nature. In this paper, we introduce a novel method to generate CEs for a pre-trained regressor by first disentangling the label-relevant from the label-irrelevant dimensions in the latent space. CEs are then generated by combining the label-irrelevant dimensions and the predefined output. The intuition behind this approach is that the ideal counterfactual search should focus on the label-irrelevant characteristics of the input and suggest changes toward target-relevant characteristics. Searching in the latent space could help achieve this goal. We show that our method maintains the characteristics of the query sample during the counterfactual search. In various experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed method is competitive based on different quality measures on image and tabular datasets in regression problem settings. It efficiently returns results closer to the original data manifold compared to three state-of-the-art methods, which is essential for realistic high-dimensional machine learning applications. While jet quenching in relativistic heavy-ion collisions has been extensively studied over decades, the polarization of quenched hadrons has rarely been discussed. It has recently been proposed that the correlations of dihadron polarization in $e^+e^-$ and $pp$ collisions provide a novel probe of the longitudinal spin transfer from hard partons to hadrons without requiring the colliding beams to be polarized. To support realistic experimental measurement of dihadron polarization with sufficient luminosity, we extend the aforementioned study to relativistic heavy-ion collisions by convoluting the vacuum fragmentation of partons with their energy loss inside the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We find that while the correlation functions of $\Lambda$-$\Lambda$ (or $\Lambda$-$\bar{\Lambda}$) polarization in peripheral collisions is consistent with those in $pp$ collisions, clear enhancement can be seen in central collisions. These correlation functions appear sensitive to different assumptions in the DSV parameterization of parton fragmentation functions, and therefore could place additional constraints on the spin-dependent fragmentation functions of quarks and gluons. Counterfactual Explanations (CEs) are an important tool in Algorithmic Recourse for addressing two questions: 1. What are the crucial factors that led to an automated prediction/decision? 2. How can these factors be changed to achieve a more favorable outcome from a user's perspective? Thus, guiding the user's interaction with AI systems by proposing easy-to-understand explanations and easy-to-attain feasible changes is essential for the trustworthy adoption and long-term acceptance of AI systems. In the literature, various methods have been proposed to generate CEs, and different quality measures have been suggested to evaluate these methods. However, the generation of CEs is usually computationally expensive, and the resulting suggestions are unrealistic and thus non-actionable. In this paper, we introduce a new method to generate CEs for a pre-trained binary classifier by first shaping the latent space of an autoencoder to be a mixture of Gaussian distributions. CEs are then generated in latent space by linear interpolation between the query sample and the centroid of the target class. We show that our method maintains the characteristics of the input sample during the counterfactual search. Lung cancer has been one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide for years. With the emergence of deep learning, computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) models based on learning algorithms can accelerate the nodule screening process, providing valuable assistance to radiologists in their daily clinical workflows. However, developing such robust and accurate models often requires large-scale and diverse medical datasets with high-quality annotations. Generating synthetic data provides a pathway for augmenting datasets at a larger scale. Therefore, in this paper, we explore the use of Semantic Diffusion Mod- els (SDM) to generate high-fidelity pulmonary CT images from segmentation maps. We utilize annotation information from the LUNA16 dataset to create paired CT images and masks, and assess the quality of the generated images using the Frechet Inception Distance (FID), as well as on two common clinical downstream tasks: nodule detection and nodule localization. Achieving improvements of 3.96% for detection accuracy and 8.50% for AP50 in nodule localization task, respectively, demonstrates the feasibility of the approach., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, submitted to MIDL 2023

Recently, the claim of room-temperature superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride at near-ambient conditions has attracted tremendous attention. Criticism of the work rises shortly, while further explorations are needed to settle the dispute. One of the intriguing observations is the pressured-induced color change, which has been reproduced in the lutetium dihydride LuH2 while its mechanism remains unclear. Through optical reflectivity measurements of LuH2 in the visible to near-infrared region, we observe strong light absorption next to the sharp plasmon resonance, which continuously shifts to higher energies with increasing pressure. It gives rise to the increased reflection of red light and suppressed reflection of blue light. Rydberg excitons, the solid-state counterparts of Rydberg atoms, have sparked considerable interest in harnessing their quantum application potentials, whereas a major challenge is realizing their spatial confinement and manipulation. Lately, the rise of two-dimensional moir\'e superlattices with highly tunable periodic potentials provides a possible pathway. Here, we experimentally demonstrate this capability through the observation of Rydberg moir\'e excitons (XRM), which are moir\'e trapped Rydberg excitons in monolayer semiconductor WSe2 adjacent to twisted bilayer graphene. In the strong coupling regime, the XRM manifest as multiple energy splittings, pronounced redshift, and narrowed linewidth in the reflectance spectra, highlighting their charge-transfer character where electron-hole separation is enforced by the strongly asymmetric interlayer Coulomb interactions. A fully implicit numerical scheme is established for solving the time fractional Swift-Hohenberg (TFSH) equation with a Caputo time derivative of order $\alpha\in(0,1)$. The variable-step L1 formula and the finite difference method are employed for the time and the space discretizations, respectively. The unique solvability of the numerical scheme is proved by the Brouwer fixed-point theorem. With the help of the discrete convolution form of L1 formula, the time-stepping scheme is shown to preserve a discrete energy dissipation law which is asymptotically compatible with the classic energy law as $\alpha\to1^-$. Furthermore, the $L^\infty$ norm boundedness of the discrete solution is obtained. Combining with the global consistency error analysis framework, the $L^2$ norm convergence order is shown rigorously. Several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the accuracy and the energy dissipation law of the proposed method. In particular, the adaptive time-stepping strategy is utilized to capture the multi-scale time behavior of the TFSH model efficiently.

A fully discrete implicit scheme is proposed for the Swift-Hohenberg model, combining the third-order backward differentiation formula (BDF3) for the time discretization and the second-order finite difference scheme for the space discretization. Applying the Brouwer fixed-point theorem and the positive definiteness of the convolution coefficients of BDF3, the presented numerical algorithm is proved to be uniquely solvable and unconditionally energy stable, further, the numerical solution is shown to be bounded in the maximum norm. The proposed scheme is rigorously proved to be convergent in $L^2$ norm by the discrete orthogonal convolution (DOC) kernel, which transfer the four-level-solution form into the three-level-gradient form for the approximation of the temporal derivative. Consequently, the error estimate for the numerical solution is established by utilization of the discrete Gronwall inequality. Numerical examples in 2D and 3D cases are provided to support the theoretical results.

In this paper, a temporal nonuniform $L1$ type difference scheme is built up for the time fractional diffusion-wave equation with the help of the order reduction technique. The unconditional convergence of the nonuniform difference scheme is proved rigorously in $L^2$ norm. Our main tool is the discrete complementary convolution kernels with respect to the coefficient kernels of the L1 type formula. The positive definiteness of the complementary convolution kernels is shown to be vital to the stability and convergence. To the best of our knowledge, this property is proved at the first time on the nonuniform time meshes. Two numerical experiments are presented to verify the accuracy and the efficiency of the proposed numerical methods.

Despite many applications regarding fractional calculus have been reported in literature, it is still unknown how to model some practical process. One major challenge in solving such a problem is that, the nonlocal property is needed while the infinite memory is undesired. Under this context, a new kind nabla fractional calculus accompanied by a tempered function is formulated. However, many properties of such fractional calculus needed to be discovered. From this, this paper gives particular emphasis to the topic. Some remarkable properties like the equivalence relation, the nabla Taylor formula, and the nabla Laplace transform for such nabla fractional calculus are developed and analyzed. We derive unconditionally stable and convergent variable-step BDF2 scheme for solving the MBE model with slope selection. The discrete orthogonal convolution kernels of the variable-step BDF2 method is commonly utilized recently for solving the phase field models. In this paper, we further prove some new inequalities, concerning the vector forms, for the kernels especially dealing with the nonlinear terms in the slope selection model. The convergence rate of the fully discrete scheme is proved to be two both in time and space in $L^2$ norm under the setting of the variable time steps. Energy dissipation law is proved rigorously with a modified energy by adding a small term to the discrete version of the original free energy functional. Two numerical examples including an adaptive time-stepping strategy are given to verify the convergence rate and the energy dissipation law.
