16. Application of Fractal to Evaluate the Drying Shrinkage Behavior of Soil Composites from Recycled Waste Clay Brick.

Abstract

Soil drying cracking is the most common natural phenomenon affecting soil stability. Due to the complexity of the geometric shapes of soil cracks during the cracking process, it has become a major problem in engineering science. The extremely irregular and complex crack networks formed in civil engineering materials can be quantitatively investigated using fractal theory. In this paper, fractal dimension is proposed to characterize the drying cracking characteristics of composite soil by adding recycled waste brick micro-powder. At the same time, the concept of the probability entropy of cracking is introduced to quantify the ordered state of crack development. Correspondingly, the endpoint value of probability entropy was solved mathematically, and the meaning of the probability entropy of cracking was clarified. In this study, the fracture fractal characteristics of composite soil mixed with different materials were first investigated. Then, five groups of composite soil-saturated muds with added recycled waste brick micro-powder of different contents were prepared in the laboratory. Using the evaporation test under constant temperature and humidity, the change rules of the fractal dimensions, probability entropy, crack ratios, and water contents of cracks during the cracking process of the soil samples were obtained. The results show that: (1) on the whole, the fractal dimensions of the soil samples added with recycled waste brick micro-powder of different contents increased over time, and the fractal dimensions of the soil samples without recycled waste brick micro-powder were obviously larger than those of the soil samples with recycled waste brick micro-powder. With the increase in the content of recycled waste brick micro-powder, the maximum fractal dimension decreased in turn. The maximum fractal dimensions of the five groups of soil samples were 1.74, 1.68, 1.62, 1.57, and 1.45. (2) The change trends of the probability entropy and fractal dimensions were similar; both of them showed an upward trend over time, and the probability entropy of the soil samples without recycled waste brick micro-powder was greater than that of the soil samples with recycled waste brick micro-powder. With the increase in the contents of recycled waste brick micro-powder, the probability entropy decreased in turn. The maximum values of the crack probability entropy of the five groups of soil samples were 0.99, 0.92, 0.87, 0.83, and 0.80. (3) Under the action of continuous evaporation, the moisture contents of the soil samples gradually decreased over time, while the crack ratios increased over time. To sum up, both from the perspective of the development process of the cracks of the soil samples and from the perspective of the final stable crack networks of the soil samples, the geometric shapes of the cracks of the soil samples without recycled waste brick micro-powder were the most complex. With the increase in the content of recycled waste brick micro-powder, the fractal characteristics of the cracks gradually changed from complex to simple. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

38. Ni enhanced reactivity of Fe/TiO2for selective catalytic reduction of NO with CO and the mechanism investigation

Abstract

The effect of surface synergetic oxygen vacancy constructed by bimetallic metal on CO selective catalytic reduction of NOx(CO-SCR) was investigated by loading Fe and Ni on TiO2. Herein, a series of NixFe1−x/TiO2was prepared by the wet impregnation method. The microstructures, elemental states, and reactivity of the prepared samples were characterized by XRD, HRTEM, EPR, H2-TPD, CO-TPD, NO-TPD, and XPS. The results show that the synergistic effect between Ni and Fe effectively optimized the dispersion of Fe and constructed abundant Ni-O-Fe bonds. Furthermore, the excellent CO trapping capacity led to an increased number of cNi-□-Fe structures (SSOV), which effectively promotes NO activation at low temperatures. The in situDRIFT spectra illustrated that N2O intermediate species rapidly transformed into N2-based species at 250 ℃, and the catalyst modified with Ni presented excellent NO conversion and N2selectivity. The Ni0.2Fe0.8/TiO2sample demonstrated almost 100% NO conversion, 93% N2selectivity, and considerable stability with a gas hourly space velocity of 33,000 h-1at 250 ℃. This work provides a novel way for the design and preparation of a bimetallic NO reduction catalyst to promote the further study of efficient CO-SCR catalysts.

39. Measuring trade openness and factor-specific production inefficiency with the stochastic frontier model.

Abstract

This thesis is composed of two chapters employing the same econometric technique: the stochastic frontier model. Chapter One offers a method of measuring trade openness at the country level, an issue which has long been important in the politics and economics of international trade. One existing method is first to predict each country's trade level in the absence of trade barriers using the Heckscher-Olin model, and then to attribute the departure of its actual trade from the model's prediction to its trade policy. One problem with this method is the difficulty of separating the degree of the departure due to trade barriers from the degree of departure due to other factors such as model mis-specification and measurement errors. As a result, the whole departure is taken as the impact of trade barriers. The major contribution of this essay is to introduce the stochastic frontier structure, a two-part composed error term with one non-positive and one two-sided term, into the trade model. This enables the first-order impact of trade barriers to be computed based on the one-sided term and therefore separated from other factors causing the departure. The rationale underlying this method is that trade barriers are the only factor having a first-order reducing effect on the net import. The proposed method gains significant support in various statistical tests. Measures of countries' trade barriers for each industry are also obtained. Chapter Two develops a more general form of the stochastic frontier production function model that allows for the measurement of inefficiency related to an individual factor. This model not only allows us to draw information from firms' input-output data regarding the efficiency of the firm as an economic unit, but also allows us to determine its efficiency in utilizing each type of input such as capital or labor. The model is applied to a sample of China's township, village and private (TVP) firms. The results indicate that these firms are relatively efficient in utilizing capital but inefficient in utilizing labor.
