23. Constructing a Thin Layer of the Concentrated Polyelectrolyte Solution on the Hydrogel Surface That Can Considerably Improve the Solar Evaporation Efficiency

Abstract

Converting solar energy to evaporative energy to obtain clean water has been intensively studied. However, the efficiency of the reported solar evaporators remains limited, and their construction is complex and challenging to control. Here, we report a facile method for constructing efficient solar evaporators by utilizing a thin-layer, highly concentrated polyelectrolyte solution as the evaporation layer. Under an electric field, a single layer of polyelectrolyte–shelled micelles is grafted onto a hydrogel surface, controllably and stably modifying highly concentrated polyelectrolyte chains on the outermost surface. These chains, with their low chemical potential, efficiently absorb water to form the evaporation layer. Theoretical calculations indicate that the water molecules in the evaporation layer possess high energy as the hydrogen bonds between them are significantly disrupted, thus minimizing the evaporation energy. Consequently, for simulated seawater and under 1 kW m–2irradiation, the as-prepared evaporator without a photothermal component achieves a high evaporation rate of 3.74 kg m–2h–1(1.5 times the highest nonphotothermal hydrogels) and that with photothermal particles β-Ti3O5reaches a record-breaking value (6.92 kg m–2h–1). Remarkably, the ion rejection ratio is as high as 99.97% due to repulsion from the positively charged polyelectrolyte.

Abstract

Comprehensive Summary: Kasha's exciton model proposes that T1 energy levels of organic compounds are insensitive to molecular aggregation and microenvironment change because of negligible small transition dipole moments of T1 states. This model holds true in most organic systems till now. Here we report the fabrication of twisted organic phosphors with intramolecular charge transfer characters and flexible molecular structures. When doped into different organic matrices, the twisted phosphor adopts different conformation, exhibits distinct phosphorescence colors and T1 energy levels, which violates Kasha's exciton model in organic system. Given that the change of phosphorescence colors and maxima can be readily distinguished by human eyes and conventional instrument, the twisted phosphors would be exploited as a new type of molecular probe, which would exhibit potential application in optical sensing and stimuli‐responsive systems. Abstract

Living system involves a plenty of delicate processes where a tiny structural variation of biological substance may lead to drastic change of the fate of the living system. Inspired by this, in artificial photofunctional systems, if tiny structural variation changes the fate of excited states, a new class of advanced material would emerge for optical analysis, sensing, and next‐generation display is reasoned. However, such delicate processes remain rarely explored in photofunctional systems, especially in room temperature organic afterglow systems. Here the attachment/detachment of methoxy group can switch off/on twisted intramolecular charge transfer property in difluoroboron β‐diketonate systems is reported. In addition, structural isomerization triggers afterglow transformation from room temperature phosphorescence to thermally activated delayed fluorescence. 41. NNMT enriches for AQP5+cancer stem cells to drive malignant progression in early gastric cardia adenocarcinoma

Abstract

ObjectiveEarly gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (EGCA) is a highly heterogeneous cancer, and the understanding of its classification and malignant progression is limited. This study explored the cellular and molecular heterogeneity in EGCA using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq).DesignscRNA-seq was conducted on 95 551 cells from endoscopic biopsies of low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia, well/moderately/poorly differentiated EGCA and their paired adjacent nonmalignant biopsy samples. Large-scale clinical samples and functional experiments were employed.ResultsIntegrative analysis of epithelial cells revealed that chief cells, parietal cells and enteroendocrine cells were rarely detected in the malignant epithelial subpopulation, whereas gland and pit mucous cells and AQP5+stem cells were predominant during malignant progression. Pseudotime and functional enrichment analyses showed that the WNT and NF-κB signalling pathways were activated during the transition. Cluster analysis of heterogeneous malignant cells revealed that NNMT-mediated nicotinamide metabolism was enriched in gastric mucin phenotype cell population, which was associated with tumour initiation and inflammation-induced angiogenesis. Furthermore, the expression level of NNMT was gradually increased during the malignant progression and associated with poor prognosis in cardia adenocarcinoma. Mechanistically, NNMT catalysed the conversion of nicotinamide to 1-methyl nicotinamide via depleting S-adenosyl methionine, which led to a reduction in H3K27 trimethylation (H3K27me3) and then activated the WNT signalling pathway to maintain the stemness of AQP5+stem cells during EGCA malignant progression.ConclusionOur study extends the understanding of the heterogeneity of EGCA and identifies a functional NNMT+/AQP5+population that may drive malignant progression in EGCA and could be used for early diagnosis and therapy.
