We constructed a frequently updated, near-real-time global power generation dataset: Carbon Monitor-Power since January, 2016 at national levels with near-global coverage and hourly-to-daily time resolution. The data presented here are collected from 37 countries across all continents for eight source groups, including three types of fossil sources (coal, gas, and oil), nuclear energy and four groups of renewable energy sources (solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy and other renewables including biomass, geothermal, etc.). The global near-real-time power dataset shows the dynamics of the global power system, including its hourly, daily, weekly and seasonal patterns as influenced by daily periodical activities, weekends, seasonal cycles, regular and irregular events (i.e., holidays) and extreme events (i.e., the COVID-19 pandemic). The Carbon Monitor-Power dataset reveals that the COVID-19 pandemic caused strong disruptions in some countries (i.e., China and India), leading to a temporary or long-lasting shift to low carbon intensity, while it had only little impact in some other countries (i.e., Australia). This dataset offers a large range of opportunities for power-related scientific research and policy-making.

We study $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with complex fermions at non-zero background charge. Motivated by multi-charge supersymmetric black holes, we propose a new $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK model with multiple $U(1)$ symmetries, integer charges, and a non-vanishing supersymmetric index, realizing features not present in known SYK models. In both models, a conformal solution with a super-Schwarzian mode emerges at low temperatures, signalling the appearance of nearly AdS$_2$/BPS physics. However, in contrast to complex SYK, the fermion scaling dimension depends on the background charge in the conformal limit. For a critical charge, we find a high to low entropy phase transition in which the conformal solution ceases to be valid. This transition has a simple interpretation: the fermion scaling dimension violates the unitarity bound. We consider $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ dualities proposed in the large central charge limit ($c\to\infty$) by Eberhardt. Here we propose the associated D1-D5 systems to be orbifolds of the standard $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ systems, thereby elevating the dualities to the finite-$c$ level on the boundary and to the quantum level in the bulk. In particular, we show that our brane systems yield low-energy sigma models whose subleading central charges match earlier predictions from bulk one-loop supergravity computations. In the case involving the Enriques surface, the finite-$c$ sigma model has a non-trivial elliptic genus which we use to microscopically explain both the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the subleading logarithmic correction to it for the associated macroscopic black brane., Comment: 34 pages. v3: minor improvements

In October of 2020, China announced that it aims to start reducing its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 20601. The surprise announcement came in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic which caused a transient drop in China's emissions in the first half of 2020. Here, we show an unprecedented de-carbonization of China's power system in late 2020: although China's power related carbon emissions were 0.5% higher in 2020 than 2019, the majority (92.9%) of the increased power demand was met by increases in low-carbon (renewables and nuclear) generation (increased by 9.3%), as compared to only 0.4% increase for fossil fuels. China's low-carbon generation in the country grew in the second half of 2020, supplying a record high of 36.7% (increased by 1.9% compared to 2019) of total electricity in 2020, when the fossil production dropped to a historical low of 63.3%. Combined, the carbon intensity of China's power sector decreased to an historical low of 519.9 tCO2/GWh in 2020. If the fast decarbonization and slowed down power demand growth from 2019 to 2020 were to continue, by 2030, over half (50.8%) of China's power demand could be provided by low carbon sources. Our results thus reveal that China made progress towards its carbon neutrality target during the pandemic, and suggest the potential for substantial further decarbonization in the next few years if the latest trends persist.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted human activities, leading to unprecedented decreases in both global energy demand and GHG emissions. Yet a little known that there is also a low carbon shift of the global energy system in 2020. Here, using the near-real-time data on energy-related GHG emissions from 30 countries (about 70% of global power generation), we show that the pandemic caused an unprecedented de-carbonization of global power system, representing by a dramatic decrease in the carbon intensity of power sector that reached a historical low of 414.9 tCO2eq/GWh in 2020. Moreover, the share of energy derived from renewable and low-carbon sources (nuclear, hydro-energy, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass) exceeded that from coal and oil for the first time in history in May of 2020. The decrease in global net energy demand (-1.3% in the first half of 2020 relative to the average of the period in 2016-2019) masks a large down-regulation of fossil-fuel-burning power plants supply (-6.1%) coincident with a surge of low-carbon sources (+6.2%). Concomitant changes in the diurnal cycle of electricity demand also favored low-carbon generators, including a flattening of the morning ramp, a lower midday peak, and delays in both the morning and midday load peaks in most countries. However, emission intensities in the power sector have since rebounded in many countries, and a key question for climate mitigation is thus to what extent countries can achieve and maintain lower, pandemic-level carbon intensities of electricity as part of a green recovery.

Due to the failure of thermodynamics for low temperature near-extremal black holes, it has long been conjectured that a "thermodynamic mass gap" exists between an extremal black hole and the lightest near-extremal state. For non-supersymmetric near-extremal black holes in Einstein gravity, with an AdS$_2$ throat, no such gap was found. Rather, at that energy scale, the spectrum exhibits a continuum of states, up to non-perturbative corrections. In this paper, we compute the partition function of near-BPS black holes in supergravity where the emergent, broken, symmetry is $PSU(1,1|2)$. To reliably compute this partition function, we show that the gravitational path integral can be reduced to that of a $\mathcal N=4$ supersymmetric extension of the Schwarzian theory, which we define and exactly quantize. In contrast to the non-supersymmetric case, we find that black holes in supergravity have a mass gap and a large extremal black hole degeneracy consistent with the Bekenstein-Hawking area. As shown in [1], two copies of the large $N$ Majorana SYK model can produce spontaneous breaking of a $Z_2$ symmetry when they are coupled by appropriate quartic terms. In this paper we similarly study two copies of the complex SYK model coupled by a quartic term preserving the $U(1) \times U(1)$ symmetry. We also present a tensor counterpart of this coupled model. When the coefficient $\alpha$ of the quartic term lies in a certain range, the coupled large $N$ theory is nearly conformal. We calculate the scaling dimensions of fermion bilinear operators as functions of $\alpha$. We show that the operator $c_{1i}^\dagger c_{2i}$, which is charged under the axial $U(1)$ symmetry, acquires a complex dimension outside of the line of fixed points. We derive the large $N$ Dyson-Schwinger equations and show that, outside the fixed line, this $U(1)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken at low temperatures because this operator acquires an expectation value. We study a large $N$ tensor model with $O(N)^3$ symmetry containing two flavors of Majorana fermions, $\psi_1^{abc}$ and $\psi_2^{abc}$. We also study its random counterpart consisting of two coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models, each one containing $N_{\rm SYK}$ Majorana fermions. In these models we assume tetrahedral quartic Hamiltonians which depend on a real coupling parameter $\alpha$. We find a duality relation between two Hamiltonians with different values of $\alpha$, which allows us to restrict the model to the range of $-1\leq \alpha\leq 1/3$. The scaling dimension of the fermion number operator $Q=i\psi_1^{abc} \psi_2^{abc}$ is complex and of the form $1/2 +i f(\alpha)$ in the range $-1\leq \alpha<0$, indicating an instability of the conformal phase. Using Schwinger-Dyson equations to solve for the Green functions, we show that in the true low-temperature phase this operator acquires an expectation value. This demonstrates the breaking of an anti-unitary particle-hole symmetry and other discrete symmetries. We also calculate spectra of the coupled SYK models for values of $N_{\rm SYK}$ where exact diagonalizations are possible. For negative $\alpha$ we find a gap separating the two lowest energy states from the rest of the spectrum; this leads to exponential decay of the zero-temperature correlation functions. For $N_{\rm SYK}$ divisible by $4$, the two lowest states have a small splitting.
