Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed sub-Alfvenic solar wind intervals during encounters 8 - 14, and low-frequency magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in these regions may differ from that in super-Alfvenic wind. We apply a new mode-decomposition analysis (Zank et al 2023) to the sub-Alfv\'enic flow observed by PSP on 2021 April 28, identifying and characterizing entropy, magnetic islands, forward and backward Alfv\'en waves, including weakly/non-propagating Alfv\'en vortices, forward and backward fast and slow magnetosonic modes. Density fluctuations are primarily and almost equally entropy and backward propagating slow magnetosonic modes. The mode-decomposition provides phase information (frequency and wavenumber k) for each mode. Entropy-density fluctuations have a wavenumber anisotropy k_{||} >> k_{perp} whereas slow mode density fluctuations have k_{perp} > k_{||}. Magnetic field fluctuations are primarily magnetic island modes (delta B^i) with an O(1) smaller contribution from uni-directionally propagating Alfven waves (delta B^{A+}) giving a variance anisotropy of <{\delta B^i}^2> / = 4.1. Incompressible magnetic fluctuations dominate compressible contributions from fast and slow magnetosonic modes. The magnetic island spectrum is Kolmogorov-like k_{perp}^{-1.6} in perpendicular wavenumber and the uni-directional Alfven wave spectra are k_{||}^{-1.6} and k_{perp}^{-1.5}. Fast magnetosonic modes propagate at essentially the Alfv\'en speed with anti-correlated transverse velocity and magnetic field fluctuations and are almost exclusively magnetic due to beta_p<<1. Transverse velocity fluctuations are the dominant velocity component in fast magnetosonic modes and longitudinal fluctuations dominate in slow modes. Mode-decomposition is an effective tool in identifying the basic building blocks of MHD turbulence and provides detailed phase information about each of the modes.

Space weather is a multidisciplinary research area connecting scientists from across heliophysics domains seeking a coherent understanding of our space environment that can also serve modern life and society's needs. COSPAR's ISWAT (International Space Weather Action Teams) 'clusters' focus attention on different areas of space weather study while ensuring the coupled system is broadly addressed via regular communications and interactions. The ISWAT cluster "H3: Radiation Environment in the Heliosphere" (https://www.iswat-cospar.org/h3) has been working to provide a scientific platform to understand, characterize and predict the energetic particle radiation in the heliosphere with the practical goal of mitigating radiation risks associated with areospace activities, satellite industry and human space explorations. In particular, present approaches help us understand the physical phenomena at large, optimizing the output of multi-viewpoint observations and pushing current models to their limits. In this paper, we review the scientific aspects of the radiation environment in the heliosphere covering four different radiation types: Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs), Ground Level Enhancement (GLE, a type of SEP events with energies high enough to trigger the enhancement of ground-level detectors), Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) and Anomalous Cosmic Rays (ACRs). We focus on related advances in the research community in the past 10-20 years and what we still lack in terms of understanding and predictive capabilities. Finally we also consider some recommendations related to the improvement of both observational and modeling capabilities in the field of space radiation environment.

This Letter reports the first observational estimate of the heating rate in the slowly expanding solar corona. The analysis exploits the simultaneous remote and local observations of the same coronal plasma volume with the Solar Orbiter/Metis and the Parker Solar Probe instruments, respectively, and relies on the basic solar wind magnetohydrodynamic equations. As expected, energy losses are a minor fraction of the solar wind energy flux, since most of the energy dissipation that feeds the heating and acceleration of the coronal flow occurs much closer to the Sun than the heights probed in the present study, which range from 6.3 to 13.3 solar radii. The energy deposited to the supersonic wind is then used to explain the observed slight residual wind acceleration and to maintain the plasma in a non-adiabatic state. As derived in the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin limit, the present energy transfer rate estimates provide a lower limit, which can be very useful in refining the turbulence-based modeling of coronal heating and subsequent solar wind acceleration.

The transport of energetic particles in response to solar wind turbulence is important for space weather. To understand charged particle transport, it is usually assumed that the phase of the turbulence is randomly distributed (the random phase approximation) in quasi-linear theory and simulations. In this paper, we calculate the coherence index, $C_\phi$, of solar wind turbulence observed by the Helios 2 and Parker Solar Probe spacecraft using the surrogate data technique to check if the assumption is valid. Here, values of $C_\phi=0$ and $1$ indicate that the phase coherence is random and correlated, respectively. We estimate that the coherence index at the resonant scale of energetic ions ($10$ MeV protons) is $0.1$ at $0.87$ and $0.65$ au, $0.18$ at $0.29$ au, and $0.3$ ($0.35$) at $0.09$ au for super (sub)-Alfv\'enic intervals, respectively. Since the random phase approximation corresponds to $C_\phi=0$, this may indicate that the random phase approximation is not valid for the transport of energetic particles in the inner heliosphere, especially very close to the Sun ($\sim0.09$ au)., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, published in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

Evidence for the presence of ion cyclotron waves, driven by turbulence, at the boundaries of the current sheet is reported in this paper. By exploiting the full potential of the joint observations performed by Parker Solar Probe and the Metis coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter, local measurements of the solar wind can be linked with the large-scale structures of the solar corona. The results suggest that the dynamics of the current sheet layers generates turbulence, which in turn creates a sufficiently strong temperature anisotropy to make the solar-wind plasma unstable to anisotropy-driven instabilities such as the Alfv\'en ion-cyclotron, mirror-mode, and firehose instabilities. The study of the polarization state of high-frequency magnetic fluctuations reveals that ion cyclotron waves are indeed present along the current sheet, thus linking the magnetic topology of the remotely imaged coronal source regions with the wave bursts observed in situ. The present results may allow improvement of state-of-the-art models based on the ion cyclotron mechanism, providing new insights into the processes involved in coronal heating., Comment: 12 pages

Switchbacks are rapid magnetic field reversals that last from seconds to hours. Current Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations pose many open questions in regard to the nature of switchbacks. For example, are they stable as they propagate through the inner heliosphere, and how are they formed? In this work, we aim to investigate the structure and origin of switchbacks. In order to study the stability of switchbacks, we suppose the small-scale current sheets therein are generated by magnetic braiding, and they should work to stabilize the switchbacks. With more than one thousand switchbacks identified with PSP observations in seven encounters, we find many more current sheets inside than outside switchbacks, indicating that these microstructures should work to stabilize the S-shaped structures of switchbacks. Additionally, we study the helium variations to trace the switchbacks to their origins. We find both helium-rich and helium-poor populations in switchbacks, implying that the switchbacks could originate from both closed and open magnetic field regions in the Sun. Moreover, we observe that the alpha-proton differential speeds also show complex variations as compared to the local Alfv\'en speed. The joint distributions of both parameters show that low helium abundance together with low differential speed is the dominant state in switchbacks. The presence of small-scale current sheets in switchbacks along with the helium features are in line with the hypothesis that switchbacks could originate from the Sun via interchange reconnection process. The solar wind (SW) and local interstellar medium (LISM) are turbulent media. Their interaction is governed by complex physical processes and creates heliospheric regions with significantly different properties in terms of particle populations, bulk flow and turbulence. Our knowledge of the solar wind turbulence \nature and dynamics mostly relies on near-Earth and near-Sun observations, and has been increasingly improving in recent years due to the availability of a wealth of space missions, including multi-spacecraft missions. In contrast, the properties of turbulence in the outer heliosphere are still not completely understood. In situ observations by Voyager and New Horizons, and remote neutral atom measurements by IBEX strongly suggest that turbulence is one of the critical processes acting at the heliospheric interface. It is intimately connected to charge exchange processes responsible for the production of suprathermal ions and energetic neutral atoms. Solar energetic particles (SEPs) associated with flares and/or coronal mass ejection (CME)-driven shocks can impose acute radiation hazards to space explorations. To measure energetic particles in near-Mars space, the Mars Energetic Particle Analyzer (MEPA) instrument onboard China's Tianwen-1 (TW-1) mission was designed. Here, we report the first MEPA measurements of the widespread SEP event occurring on 29 November 2020 when TW-1 was in transit to Mars. This event occurred when TW-1 and Earth were magnetically well connected, known as the Hohmann-Parker effect, thus offering a rare opportunity to understand the underlying particle acceleration and transport process. Measurements from TW-1 and near-Earth spacecraft show similar double-power-law spectra and a radial dependence of the SEP peak intensities. Moreover, the decay phases of the time-intensity profiles at different locations clearly show the reservoir effect. We conclude that the double-power-law spectrum is likely generated at the acceleration site, and that a small but finite cross-field diffusion is crucial to understand the formation of the SEP reservoir phenomenon. We present a first theoretical modeling of joint Parker Solar Probe (PSP) - Metis/Solar Orbiter (SolO) quadrature observations Telloni et al 2022c. The combined observations describe the evolution of a slow solar wind plasma parcel from the extended solar corona ($3.5-6.3$ R$_\odot$) to the very inner heliosphere (23.2 R$_\odot$). The Metis/SolO instrument remotely measures the solar wind speed finding a range from $96-201$ kms$^{-1}$, and PSP measures the solar wind plasma in situ, observing a radial speed of 219.34 kms$^{-1}$. We find theoretically and observationally that the solar wind speed accelerates rapidly within 3.3 -- 4 R$_\odot$, and then increases more gradually with distance. Similarly, we find that the theoretical solar wind density is consistent with the remotely and in situ observed solar wind density. The normalized cross-helicity and normalized residual energy observed by PSP are 0.96 and -0.07, respectively, indicating that the slow solar wind is very Alfv\'enic. The theoretical NI/slab results are very similar to PSP measurements, which is a consequence of the highly magnetic field-aligned radial flow ensuring that PSP can measure slab fluctuations and not 2D. Finally, we calculate the theoretical 2D and slab turbulence pressure, finding that the theoretical slab pressure is very similar to that observed by PSP., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Switchbacks are sudden, large radial deflections of the solar wind magnetic field, widely revealed in interplanetary space by the Parker Solar Probe. The switchbacks' formation mechanism and sources are still unresolved, although candidate mechanisms include Alfv\'enic turbulence, shear-driven Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, interchange reconnection, and geometrical effects related to the Parker spiral. This Letter presents observations from the Metis coronagraph onboard Solar Orbiter of a single large propagating S-shaped vortex, interpreted as first evidence of a switchback in the solar corona. It originated above an active region with the related loop system bounded by open-field regions to the East and West. Observations, modeling, and theory provide strong arguments in favor of the interchange reconnection origin of switchbacks. Metis measurements suggest that the initiation of the switchback may also be an indicator of the origin of slow solar wind.

Zank et al. developed models describing the transport of low frequency incompressible and nearly incompressible turbulence in inhomogeneous flows. The formalism was based on expressing the fluctuating variables in terms of the Els\"assar variables and then taking "moments" subject to various closure hypotheses. The turbulence transport models are different according to whether the plasma beta regime is large or of order 1 or smaller. Here, we show explicitly that the two sets of turbulence transport models admit a conservation representation that resembles the well-known WKB transport equation for Alfv\'en wave energy density after introducing appropriate definitions of the "pressure" associated with the turbulent fluctuations. This includes introducing a distinct turbulent pressure tensor for 3D incompressible turbulence (the large plasma beta limit) and pressure tensors for quasi-2D and slab turbulence (the plasma beta order 1 or small regimes) that generalize the form of the WKB pressure tensor. Various limits of the different turbulent pressure tensors are discussed. However, the analogy between the conservation form of the turbulence transport models and the WKB model is not close for multiple reasons, including that the turbulence models express fully nonlinear physical processes unlike the strictly linear WKB description. The analysis presented here serves both as a check on the validity and correctness of the turbulence transport models and provides greater transparency of the energy dissipation term and the "turbulent pressure" in our models, which is important for many practical applications., Comment: 19 pages, 0 figure

Using quiet-time measurements of element oxygen within the energy range 7.3--237.9 MeV nuc$^{-1}$ from the ACE spacecraft at 1 au, we compare the energy spectra and intensities of anomalous and Galactic cosmic rays (ACRs and GCRs, respectively) during 1997--2020. Our analysis shows that the transition from ACR-dominated spectrum to GCR-dominated spectrum occurs at energies $\sim$15 to $\sim$35 MeV nuc$^{-1}$, and the transition energy $E_t$ is found to be well anticorrelated with varying solar activity. This is the first study of ACR-GCR transition energy dependence on the solar cycle variation. At energies below $E_t$, the index of the power-law ACR-dominated spectrum ($\gamma_1$) ranges from -2.0 to -0.5, whereas the GCR-dominated spectrum has a power-law index ($\gamma_2$) changing from 0.3 to 0.8 at energies ranging from $E_t$ to 237.9 MeV nuc$^{-1}$. Both $\gamma_1$ and $\gamma_2$ are positively correlated with solar activity. In addition, during the solar cycle 24/25 minimum period, the peak GCR intensity observed by ACE spacecraft is about 8\% above its 2009 value, setting a new record since the space age, while the peak ACR intensity is almost similar to that of the previous two solar cycles with the same pattern of solar magnetic polarity, indicating a different modulation mechanism between ACRs and GCRs.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) represent one type of the major eruption from the Sun. Their interplanetary counterparts, the interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs), are the direct manifestations of these structures when they propagate into the heliosphere and encounter one or more observing spacecraft. The ICMEs generally exhibit a set of distinctive signatures from the in-situ spacecraft measurements. A particular subset of ICMEs, the so-called Magnetic Clouds (MCs), is more uniquely defined and has been studied for decades, based on in-situ magnetic field and plasma measurements. By utilizing the latest multiple spacecraft measurements and analysis tools, we report a detailed study of the internal magnetic field configuration of an MC event observed by both the Solar Orbiter (SO) and Wind spacecraft in the solar wind near the Sun-Earth line. Both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) models are applied to reveal the flux rope configurations of the MC. Various geometrical as well as physical parameters are derived and found to be similar within error estimates for the two methods. These results quantitatively characterize the coherent MC flux rope structure crossed by the two spacecraft along different paths. Magnetic flux rope, formed by the helical magnetic field lines, can sometimes remain its shape while carrying significant plasma flow that is aligned with the local magnetic field. We report the existence of such structures and static flux ropes by applying the Grad-Shafranov-based algorithm to the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) in-situ measurements in the first five encounters. These structures are detected at heliocentric distances, ranging from 0.13 to 0.66 au, in a total of 4-month time period. We find that flux ropes with field-aligned flows, although occur more frequently, have certain properties similar to those of static flux ropes, such as the decaying relations of the magnetic fields within structures with respect to heliocentric distances. Moreover, these events are more likely with magnetic pressure dominating over the thermal pressure. About one-third of events are detected in the relatively fast-speed solar wind. Taking into account the high Alfvenicity, we also compare with switchback spikes identified during three encounters and interpret their inter-relations. We find that some switchbacks can be detected when the spacecraft traverses flux rope-like structures. The cross-section maps for selected events are presented via the new Grad-Shafranov type reconstruction. In this paper, we study the galactic cosmic ray (GCR) variations over the solar cycles 23 and 24, with measurements from the NASA's ACE/CRIS instrument and the ground-based neutron monitors (NMs). The results show that the maximum GCR intensities of heavy nuclei (nuclear charge 5-28, 50-500 MeV/nuc) at 1 AU during the solar minimum in 2019-2020 break their previous records, exceeding those recorded in 1997 and 2009 by ~25% and ~6%, respectively, and are at the highest levels since the space age. However, the peak NM count rates are lower than those in late 2009. The difference between GCR intensities and NM count rates still remains to be explained. Furthermore, we find that the GCR modulation environment during the solar minimum P24/25 are significantly different from previous solar minima in several aspects, including remarkably low sunspot numbers, extremely low inclination of the heliospheric current sheet, rare coronal mass ejections, weak interplanetary magnetic field and turbulence. These changes are conducive to reduce the level of solar modulation, providing a plausible explanation for the record-breaking GCR intensities in interplanetary space., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal Supplement
