15. Boosting photovoltaic performance of ternary organic solar cells by integrating a multi-functional guest acceptor

Abstract

Constructing ternary structure is one of the most effective design strategies to break the efficiency ceiling of traditional binary organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, a new Y-series non-fullerene acceptor (Y-T) featuring 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (DTBA) end groups is developed as a third component for the classical PM6:Y6 binary system. The champion power conversion efficiency of ternary OSCs is increased from 15.64% to 17.37% via incorporating 10 wt% Y-T, with the simultaneously enhanced open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.865 V, a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 26.90 mA/cm2, and a fill factor (FF) of 74.97%. The positive contribution of Y-T in the ternary blend can be ascribed to the improved spectroscopic complementarity and enhanced exciton utilization ratio due to the additional energy transfer process. Moreover, Y-T guest acceptor plays a critical role in adjusting the active layer morphology and facilitating three-dimension phase separation, resulting in a balanced charge transport and enhanced FF of ternary OSCs. This work provides insight into the molecular design of non-fullerene acceptor and suggest guidelines to rationally select guest component for ternary OSCs.

26. Integrated linker-regulation and ring-fusion engineering for efficient additive-free non-fullerene organic solar cells

Abstract

The rational molecular design and structural modification of quasi-two-dimensional fused perylene diimide (quasi-2D FPDI) acceptors have received growing attention for application in non-fullerene organic solar cells (NF-OSCs). Herein, we designed and synthesized two pairs of FPDI acceptors, one in the form of FPDI-π-bridge-FPDI with the π-bridge being either an axisymmetric thiophene (T) or a centrosymmetric thienothiophene (TT) unit, and the other being the corresponding ring-fusion counterpart. Four small molecule acceptors, namely T-FPDI, TT-FPDI, FT-FPDI and FTT-FPDI, were paired with a common PTB7-Th polymeric electron donor as active materials for a comparative study of the effects of linkers and ring fusion on their photovoltaic performances. The T-FPDI-based NF-OSC exhibited a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.50%, while a higher PCE of 7.17% with a simultaneous enhancement in the open circuit voltage (Voc), the short-circuit current density (Jsc) and the fill factor (FF) was achieved for the TT-FPDI-based solar cells. The solar cells based on the ring-fused FT-FPDI and FTT-FPDI acceptors displayed PCEs of 6.75% and 7.66%, respectively, both higher than those of the corresponding non-fused counterparts. Notably, the trade-off between theJscandVoc, commonly observed in fullerene OSCs, is alleviated in these systems. It is also worth noting that the NF-OSCs based on these FPDI acceptors do not need any solvent additives. This successful molecular engineering based on novel quasi-2D FPDI building blocks may inspire the development of emergent electron acceptors for high performance additive-free NF-OSCs.

Abstract

Photodetectors with good polarization detection ability are promising in many applications, such as remote sensing imaging and environmental monitoring. However, the traditional polarization detection systems fall short in meeting integration demands of the integrated‐circuits field due to additional optical elements. The emerging 2D materials with in‐plane anisotropic structures provide a possible method to fabricate remarkable polarization detectors. Modulating the band structure by gate voltage is an important strategy for developing optoelectronic devices. Herein, a polarized photodetector based on PdSe2/MoS2 out‐of‐plane heterojunction is fabricated. Due to its unique out‐of‐plane heterostructure, the device exhibits excellent photoresponse characteristics and polarization sensitivity, including an excellent responsivity of 10.19A/W, an extremely high external quantum efficiency of 2429%, a fast rise/decay time of 68/192 µs, and a high photocurrent anisotropy ratio of 3.09. Based on the adjustment of the built‐in electric field through gate voltage, the performance of the device can be accordingly modulated. As the gate voltage increases from −30 to 30 V, the responsivity gradually increases from 7.5 to 13A/W and the detectivity increases from 1.53 to 2.63 × 109Jones. Finally, its olarization imaging ability is demonstrated at different polarization angles. The findings indicate that PdSe2/MoS2 devices exhibit significant potential for polarized photoelectric detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
