2. Factors Affecting Willingness to Communicate in English among Chinese Students in an International Academic Setting in Thailand

Abstract

Willingness to communicate (WTC) is the construct of a language learner's readiness to communicate with a specific person using the target language at a particular time (MacIntyre et al, 1998). This study aimed to investigate Chinese English learners' WTC in an international school in Thailand. The study used semi-structured interviews to identify the possible factors that could impact Chinese students' WTC in the international school context and how a different language environment (China vs Thailand) affected their WTC. Findings showed that the factors influencing the participants' WTC could be categorized according to cognitive, affective, motivational,sociocultural, and contextual variables. The study suggested that an L2-supportive learning environment can help increase the participants' self-confidence and self-esteem, which are very important factors affecting their WTC in English.

Abstract

\b{eta}-PdBi2 has attracted much attention for its prospective ability to possess simultaneously topological surface and superconducting states due to its unprecedented spin-orbit interaction (SOC). Whereas most works have focused solely on investigating its topological surface states, the coupling between spin and charge degrees of freedom in this class of quantum material remains unexplored. Here we first report a study of spin-to-charge conversion in a \b{eta}-PdBi2 ultrathin film grown by molecular beam epitaxy, utilizing a spin pumping technique to perform inverse spin Hall effect measurements. We find that the room temperature spin Hall angle of Fe/\b{eta}-PdBi2, {\theta}_SH=0.037. This value is one order of magnitude larger than that of reported conventional superconductors, and is comparable to that of the best SOC metals and topological insulators. Abstract

Objective To explore the effects of silencing endothelial PAS domain-containing protein 1 (EPAS1) on the proliferation, migration and invasion of human renal clear cell carcinoma cell line HiMet-ccRCC and to discuss the possible mechanism. Methods HiMet-ccRCC cells were divided into control (Con) group, negative control (NC) group and silencing EPAS1 expression group (EPAS1 siRNA group). RT-qPCR was used to detect the EPAS1 mRNA level in HiMet-ccRCC cells; MTT method was used to detect the proliferation of HiMet-ccRCC cells; Transwell experiment was used to detect the migration and invasion ability of HiMet-ccRCC cells; Western blot was used to detect the expression of E-cadherin,N-cadherin,MMP-9,PCNA. Results Compared with Con and NC group, the expression level of EPAS1 in HiMet-ccRCC cells in the EPAS1 siRNA group was significantly reduced (P＜0.05), the proliferation inhibition rate of HiMet-ccRCC cells was significantly increased and the counting of invasion and migration cells was significantly reduced (P＜0.05), the protein expression of E-cadherin in HiMet-ccRCC cells from EPAS1 siRNA group increased (P＜0.05)and the protein expression of N-cadherin, MMP-9 and PCNA reduced(P＜0.05). Conclusions Silencing EPAS1 could inhibit the proliferation, migration and invasion of HiMet-ccRCC cells and EPAS1 may be a potential biological target for gene therapy of renal clear cell carcinoma.

19. Magnetocaloric effect and phase transition critical behavior of La0.75Sr0.25Mn0.9Co0.1O3compound synthesized under the high pressure

Abstract

In this study, a novel method is proposed for producing perovskite rare-earth manganese oxide magnetic refrigeration materials that exhibit superior properties compared to similar materials. The maximum magnetic entropy change values for this sample are 1.44 and 3.75 J·kg−1·K−1for magnetic fields of 2 and 7 T, respectively. Additionally, its relative cooling power has been calculated to be 101.96 and 404.78 J·kg−1, indicating good performance. Both results were obtained using the sample synthesized under a pressure of 4 GPa, and the sample has undergone a second phase transition. The critical behavior of the sample fits well with the mean field model. For different magnetic fields, there is a significant overlap between the values of the maximum magnetic entropy change and the temperature-averaged entropy change, indicating that the refrigeration performance of the sample after high pressure can approach its maximum capability.

Abstract

Background: Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs), as ectopic lymphoid-like tissues, are highly similar to secondary lymphoid organs and are not only involved in chronic inflammation and autoimmune responses but are also closely associated with tumor immunotherapy and prognosis. The complex composition of the urological tumor microenvironment not only varies greatly in response to immunotherapy, but the prognostic value of TLSs in different urological tumors remains controversial. Summary: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and other full-text database systems. TLSs, kidney cancer, uroepithelial cancer, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer as keywords, relevant literature was searched from the time the library was built to 2023. Systematically explore the role and mechanism of TLSs in urological tumors. It includes the characteristics of TLSs, the role and mechanism of TLSs in urological tumors, and the clinical significance of TLSs in urological tumors. Key Messages: The prognostic role of TLSs in different urological tumors was significantly different. It is not only related to its enrichment in the tumor but also highly correlated with the location of the tumor. In addition, autoimmune toxicity may be a potential barrier to its role in the formation of TLSs through induction. Abstract

B cell malignancies frequently colonize the bone marrow. The mechanisms responsible for this preferential homing are incompletely understood. Here we studied multiple myeloma (MM) as a model of a terminally differentiated B cell malignancy that selectively colonizes the bone marrow. We found that extracellular CyPA (eCyPA), secreted by bone marrow endothelial cells (BMECs), promoted the colonization and proliferation of MM cells in an in vivo scaffold system via binding to its receptor, CD147, on MM cells. The expression and secretion of eCyPA by BMECs was enhanced by BCL9, a Wnt-β-catenin transcriptional coactivator that is selectively expressed by these cells. eCyPA levels were higher in bone marrow serum than in peripheral blood in individuals with MM, and eCyPA-CD147 blockade suppressed MM colonization and tumor growth in the in vivo scaffold system. eCyPA also promoted the migration of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma cells, two other B cell malignancies that colonize the bone marrow and express CD147.
