Teleoperation can be very difficult due to limited perception, high communication latency, and limited degrees of freedom (DoFs) at the operator side. Autonomous teleoperation is proposed to overcome this difficulty by predicting user intentions and performing some parts of the task autonomously to decrease the demand on the operator and increase the task completion rate. However, decision-making for mode-switching is generally assumed to be done by the operator, which brings an extra DoF to be controlled by the operator and introduces extra mental demand. On the other hand, the communication perspective is not investigated in the current literature, although communication imperfections and resource limitations are the main bottlenecks for teleoperation. In this study, we propose an intelligent mode-switching framework by jointly considering mode-switching and communication systems. User intention recognition is done at the operator side. Based on user intention recognition, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agent is trained and deployed at the operator side to seamlessly switch between autonomous and teleoperation modes. A real-world data set is collected from our teleoperation testbed to train both user intention recognition and DRL algorithms. In this paper, we establish a task-oriented cross-system design framework to minimize the required packet rate for timely and accurate modeling of a real-world robotic arm in the Metaverse, where sensing, communication, prediction, control, and rendering are considered. To optimize a scheduling policy and prediction horizons, we design a Constraint Proximal Policy Optimization(C-PPO) algorithm by integrating domain knowledge from relevant systems into the advanced reinforcement learning algorithm, Proximal Policy Optimization(PPO). Specifically, the Jacobian matrix for analyzing the motion of the robotic arm is included in the state of the C-PPO algorithm, and the Conditional Value-at-Risk(CVaR) of the state-value function characterizing the long-term modeling error is adopted in the constraint. Besides, the policy is represented by a two-branch neural network determining the scheduling policy and the prediction horizons, respectively. To evaluate our algorithm, we build a prototype including a real-world robotic arm and its digital model in the Metaverse. The experimental results indicate that domain knowledge helps to reduce the convergence time and the required packet rate by up to 50%, and the cross-system design framework outperforms a baseline framework in terms of the required packet rate and the tail distribution of the modeling error., Comment: This paper is accepted by IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, JSAC-SI-HCM 2024

This paper presents the Never Ending Open Learning Adaptive Framework (NEOLAF), an integrated neural-symbolic cognitive architecture that models and constructs intelligent agents. The NEOLAF framework is a superior approach to constructing intelligent agents than both the pure connectionist and pure symbolic approaches due to its explainability, incremental learning, efficiency, collaborative and distributed learning, human-in-the-loop enablement, and self-improvement. The paper further presents a compelling experiment where a NEOLAF agent, built as a problem-solving agent, is fed with complex math problems from the open-source MATH dataset. The results demonstrate NEOLAF's superior learning capability and its potential to revolutionize the field of cognitive architectures and self-improving adaptive instructional systems.

As an emerging concept, the Metaverse has the potential to revolutionize the social interaction in the post-pandemic era by establishing a digital world for online education, remote healthcare, immersive business, intelligent transportation, and advanced manufacturing. The goal is ambitious, yet the methodologies and technologies to achieve the full vision of the Metaverse remain unclear. In this paper, we first introduce the three infrastructure pillars that lay the foundation of the Metaverse, i.e., human-computer interfaces, sensing and communication systems, and network architectures. Then, we depict the roadmap towards the Metaverse that consists of four stages with different applications. To support diverse applications in the Metaverse, we put forward a novel design methodology: task-oriented design, and further review the challenges and the potential solutions. In the case study, we develop a prototype to illustrate how to synchronize a real-world device and its digital model in the Metaverse by task-oriented design, where a deep reinforcement learning algorithm is adopted to minimize the required communication throughput by optimizing the sampling and prediction systems subject to a synchronization error constraint., Comment: This paper is accepted by the IEEE Wireless Communications

Prediction has recently been considered as a promising approach to meet low-latency and high-reliability requirements in long-distance haptic communications. However, most of the existing methods did not take features of tasks and the relationship between prediction and communication into account. In this paper, we propose a task-oriented prediction and communication co-design framework, where the reliability of the system depends on prediction errors and packet losses in communications. The goal is to minimize the required radio resources subject to the low-latency and high-reliability requirements of various tasks. Specifically, we consider the just noticeable difference (JND) as a performance metric for the haptic communication system. We collect experiment data from a real-world teleoperation testbed and use time-series generative adversarial networks (TimeGAN) to generate a large amount of synthetic data. This allows us to obtain the relationship between the JND threshold, prediction horizon, and the overall reliability including communication reliability and prediction reliability. We take 5G New Radio as an example to demonstrate the proposed framework and optimize bandwidth allocation and data rates of devices. Recently, quadruped robots have been well developed with potential applications in different areas, such as care homes, hospitals, and other social areas. To ensure their integration in such social contexts, it is essential to understand people's proxemic preferences around such robots. In this paper, we designed a human-quadruped-robot interaction study (N = 32) to investigate the effect of 1) different facing orientations and 2) the gaze of a moving robot on human proxemic distance. Our work covers both static and dynamic interaction scenarios. We found a statistically significant effect of both the robot's facing direction and its gaze on preferred personal distances. The distances humans established towards certain robot behavioral modes reflect their attitudes, thereby guiding the design of future autonomous robots.

The metaverse has the potential to revolutionize the next generation of the Internet by supporting highly interactive services with the help of Mixed Reality (MR) technologies; still, to provide a satisfactory experience for users, the synchronization between the physical world and its digital models is crucial. This work proposes a sampling, communication and prediction co-design framework to minimize the communication load subject to a constraint on tracking the Mean Squared Error (MSE) between a real-world device and its digital model in the metaverse. To optimize the sampling rate and the prediction horizon, we exploit expert knowledge and develop a constrained Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm, named Knowledge-assisted Constrained Twin-Delayed Deep Deterministic (KC-TD3) policy gradient algorithm. We validate our framework on a prototype composed of a real-world robotic arm and its digital model. Compared with existing approaches: (1) When the tracking error constraint is stringent (MSE=0.002 degrees), our policy degenerates into the policy in the sampling-communication co-design framework. (2) When the tracking error constraint is mild (MSE=0.007 degrees), our policy degenerates into the policy in the prediction-communication co-design framework. (3) Our framework achieves a better trade-off between the average MSE and the average communication load compared with a communication system without sampling and prediction. For example, the average communication load can be reduced up to 87% when the track error constraint is 0.002 degrees. (4) Our policy outperforms the benchmark with the static sampling rate and prediction horizon optimized by exhaustive search, in terms of the tail probability of the tracking error. Furthermore, with the assistance of expert knowledge, the proposed algorithm KC-TD3 achieves better convergence time, stability, and final policy performance.

Predicting clinical outcomes to anti-cancer drugs on a personalized basis is challenging in cancer treatment due to the heterogeneity of tumors. Traditional computational efforts have been made to model the effect of drug response on individual samples depicted by their molecular profile, yet overfitting occurs because of the high dimension for omics data, hindering models from clinical application. Recent research shows that deep learning is a promising approach to build drug response models by learning alignment patterns between drugs and samples. However, existing studies employed the simple feature fusion strategy and only considered the drug features as a whole representation while ignoring the substructure information that may play a vital role when aligning drugs and genes. Hereby in this paper, we propose TCR (Transformer based network for Cancer drug Response) to predict anti-cancer drug response. By utilizing an attention mechanism, TCR is able to learn the interactions between drug atom/sub-structure and molecular signatures efficiently in our study. Furthermore, a dual loss function and cross sampling strategy were designed to improve the prediction power of TCR. We show that TCR outperformed all other methods under various data splitting strategies on all evaluation matrices (some with significant improvement). Extensive experiments demonstrate that TCR shows significantly improved generalization ability on independent in-vitro experiments and in-vivo real patient data. Nowadays the semi-tensor product (STP) approach to finite games has become a promising new direction. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on this prosperous field. After a brief introduction for STP and finite (networked) games, a description for the principle and fundamental technique of STP approach to finite games is presented. Then several problems and recent results about theory and applications of finite games via STP are presented. A brief comment about the potential use of STP to artificial intelligence is also proposed.

Two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics have been casted great attention owing to their promising prospects for miniaturized electronic and memory devices.Here, we proposed a highly stable 2D multiferroic, VOF monolayer, which is an intrinsic ferromagnetic half semiconductor with large spin polarization ~2 $\mu_{B}/V$ atom and a significant uniaxial magnetic anisotropy along a-axis (410 $\mu eV/V$ atom). Meanwhile, it shows excellent ferroelectricity with a large spontaneous polarization 32.7 $\mu C/cm^{2}$ and a moderate energy barrier (~43 meV/atom) between two ferroelectric states, which can be ascribed to the Jahn-Teller distortion.Moreover, VOF monolayer harbors an ultra-large negative Poisson's ratio in the in-plane direction (~-0.34). The Curie temperature evaluated from the Monte Carlo simulations based on the Ising model is about 215 K, which can be enhanced room temperature under -4% compressive biaxial strain.The combination of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity in the VOF monolayer could provide a promising platform for future study of multiferroic effects and next-generation multifunctional nanoelectronic device applications.

Transition metal dichalcogenides are rich in their structural phases, e.g. 1T-TaS2 and 1T-TaSe2 form charge density wave (CDW) under low temperature with interesting and exotic properties. Here, we present a systematic study of different structures in two-dimensional TaX2 (X=S, Se, Te) using density functional theory calculations with consideration of van der Waals interaction. All the normal phases present metal characteristics with various ground state and magnetic properties. The lattice reconstruction of CDW drastically affects the electronic and structural characteristics of 1T-TaS2 and 1T-TaSe2, leading to a transition from metal to insulator and an emergence of magnetic moment within periodic atomic clusters called the Star of David. The evaluated Heisenberg couplings indicate the weak ferromagnetic coupling between the clusters in monolayer. Furthermore, in bilayer commensurate CDW cases, we find intriguing phenomenon of the varying magnetic properties with different stacking orders. The magnetic moment in each layer disappears when two layers are coupled, but may sustain in certain stackings of interlayer antiferromagnetic configurations.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal oxide perovskites greatly expand the field of available 2D multifunctional material systems. Here, based on density functional theory calculations, we predicted the presence of ferromagnetism orders accompanying with an insulator-metal phase transition in bilayer $KNbO_{3}$ and $KTaO_{3}$ by applying strain engineering and/or external electric field. Indexes provide a method to access data in databases quickly. It can improve the response speed of subsequent queries by building a complete index in advance. However, it also leads to a huge overhead of the continuous updating during creating the index. An in-memory database usually has a higher query processing performance than disk databases and is more suitable for real-time query processing. Therefore, there is an urgent need to reduce the index creation and update cost for in-memory databases. Database cracking technology is currently recognized as an effective method to reduce the index initialization time. However, conventional cracking algorithms are focused on simple column data structure rather than those complex index structure for in-memory databases. In order to show the feasibility of in-memory database index cracking and promote to future more extensive research, this paper conducted a case study on the Adaptive Radix Tree (ART), a popular tree index structure of in-memory databases. On the basis of carefully examining the ART index construction overhead, an algorithm using auxiliary data structures to crack the ART index is proposed., Comment: 12 pages,15 figures

State Machine Replication (SMR) is a fundamental approach to designing service with fault tolerance. However, its requirement for the deterministic execution of transactions often results in single-threaded replicas, which cannot fully exploit the multicore capabilities of today's processors. Therefore, parallel SMR has become a hot topic of recent research. The basic idea behind it is that independent transactions can be executed in parallel, while dependent transactions must be executed in their relative order to ensure consistency among replicas. The dependency detection of existing parallel SMR methods is mainly based on pairwise transaction comparison or batch comparison. These methods cannot simultaneously guarantee both effective detection and concurrent execution. Moreover, the scheduling process cannot execute concurrently, which introduces extra scheduling overhead as well. In order to further reduce scheduling overhead and ensure the parallel execution of transactions, we propose an efficient scheduler based on a specific index structure. The index is composed of a Bloom Filter and the associated transaction queues, which provides an efficient dependency detection and preserve necessary dependency information respectively. Based on the index structure, we further devise an elaborated concurrent scheduling process. The experimental results show that the proposed scheduler is more efficient, scalable and robust than the comparison methods.

In this work, we propose a cross-layer framework for optimizing user association, packet offloading rates, and bandwidth allocation for Mission-Critical Internet-of-Things (MC-IoT) services with short packets in Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) systems, where enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB) services with long packets are considered as background services. To reduce communication delay, the 5th generation new radio is adopted in radio access networks. To avoid long queueing delay for short packets from MC-IoT, Processor-Sharing (PS) servers are deployed at MEC systems, where the service rate of the server is equally allocated to all the packets in the buffer. We derive the distribution of latency experienced by short packets in closed-form, and minimize the overall packet loss probability subject to the end-to-end delay requirement. To solve the non-convex optimization problem, we propose an algorithm that converges to a near optimal solution when the throughput of eMBB services is much higher than MC-IoT services, and extend it into more general scenarios. Furthermore, we derive the optimal solutions in two asymptotic cases: communication or computing is the bottleneck of reliability. Simulation and numerical results validate our analysis and show that the PS server outperforms first-come-first-serve servers., Comment: To appear on IEEE Internet of Things Journal (accepted with minor revision)
