1. Orbital Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in 2H-NbS2 flakes

Abstract

Symmetry breaking in a layered superconductor with Ising spin-orbit coupling has offered an opportunity to realize unconventional superconductivity. To be more specific, orbital Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, exhibiting layer-dependent finite-momentum pairing, may emerge in transition metal dichalcogenides materials (TMDC) in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. Orbital FFLO state can be more robust against the magnetic field than the conventional superconducting state with zero-momentum pairing. This feature renders its potential in field resilient superconducting functionality. Although, orbital FFLO state has been reported in NbSe2 and MoS2, it is not yet clear if orbital FFLO state can be a general feature of TMDC superconductor. Here, we report the observation of orbital FFLO state in 2H-NbS2 flakes and its dependence on the thickness of flake. We conclude that the relatively weak interlayer coupling is instrumental in stabilizing orbital FFLO state at higher temperature with respect to the critical temperature and lower magnetic field with respect to paramagnetic limit in NbS2 in comparison to its NbSe2 counterpart.

4. Vortex-driven periodic and aperiodic magnetoresistance oscillations in cuprates

Abstract

The study of the interaction between superconductivity and charge ordering is helpful to resolve the pairing mechanism in high-temperature superconductors. Recently, several resistance oscillations studies trigger the speculation that a long-range charge ordering, with an enormous mesh size of several tens of nanometer, can possibly emerge in underdoped high Tc superconductor. However, spectroscopy studies have not traced this kind of long-range charge ordering. Here, we clarify the disagreement between the transport and spectroscopy studies on the mysterious long-range charge ordering by investigating the magneto-oscillations in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+{\delta} flakes. Inspired by the observation that the oscillations evolve from a periodic to an aperiodic one with decreasing doping level, we conclude that the magneto-oscillations can be generated by the interaction between vortices and superconducting loops that enclose randomly distributed underdoped puddles while an assumption of long-range charge ordering is not necessary.

5. Josephson Effect in NbS$_{2}$ van der Waals Junctions

Abstract

Van der Waals (vdW) Josephson junctions can possibly accelerate the development of advanced superconducting device that utilizes the unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductors such as spin-orbit coupling, spin-valley locking. Here, we fabricate vertically stacked NbS$_{2}$/NbS$_{2}$ Josephson junctions using a modified all-dry transfer technique and characterize the device performance via systematic low-temperature transport measurements. The experimental results show that the superconducting transition temperature of the NbS$_{2}$/NbS$_{2}$ Josephson junction is 5.84 K, and the critical current density reaches 3975 A/cm$^{2}$ at 2K. Moreover, we extract a superconducting energy gap $\Delta=0.58$ meV, which is considerably smaller than that expected from the single band s-wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) model ($\Delta=0.89$ meV).

Abstract

Novel materials incorporating electronic degrees of freedom other than charge, including spin, orbital or valley \textit{et al} have manifested themselves to be of the great interests and applicable potentials. Recently, the multipolar degrees of freedom have attracted remarkable attention in the electronic correlated effects. In this work, we systematically studied the transport, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the topological semimetal candidate PrBi in the framework of crystalline electric field theory. Our results demonstrate the $\Gamma_3$ non-Kramers doublet as the ground state of Pr$^{3+}$ (4$f^2$) ions. This ground state is nonmagnetic but carries a non-zero quadrupolar moment $\langle\hat{O}_2^0\rangle$. A quadrupolar phase transition is inferred below 0.08 K. No obvious quadrupolar Kondo effect can be identified. Ultrahigh-field quantum oscillation measurements confirm PrBi as a semimetal with non-trivial Berry phase and low total carrier density 0.06 /f.u. We discuss the interplay between low carrier density and $4f^2$ quadrupolar moment, and ascribe the weak quadrupolar ordering and Kondo effect to consequences of the low carrier density. PrBi, thus, opens a new window to the physics of topology and strongly correlated effect with quadrupolar degrees of freedom in the low-carrier-density limit, evoking the need for a reexamination of the Nozi\`{e}res exhaustion problem in the context of multi-channel Kondo effect., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Abstract

CO2 mineralized all-solid waste alkali-activated cementitious materials can not only realize the storage of CO2 mineralized, but also shorten the curing cycle of alkali-activated cementitious materials and improve their compressive strength. It is a promising way of CO2 capture and utilization. The effects of the ratio of alkali-activated cementitious materials, mineralized curing pressure and mineralized curing time on the carbon fixation rate and compressive strength of CO2 mineralized cementitious materials were studied. The results show that the calcium carbide slag as alkali activator is more suitable for mineralization curing, and the sample with the highest Ca/Si ratio has the best carbon fixation ability under the same curing condition. Increasing the curing pressure and curing time of CO2 can improve the properties of the samples. Physical and chemical characterization test results show that, the microstructure of the mineralized samples is more compact than that of the natural curing samples, and the calcite-type calcium carbonate produced in the curing process is helpful to increase the compressive strength of the material. The research results provide basic data and reference for the development of CO2 mineralization curing technology of all-solid waste alkali-activated cementitious materials.

Abstract

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) to value-added products is regarded as a sustainable strategy to mitigate global warming and energy crisis, and designing highly efficient and robust catalysts is essential. In this work, transition metal sulfides (TMS)-decorated CuS microflower-like structures were prepared via the one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method for ECR to CO, and the influence of TMS doping on ECR performance was demonstrated. Characterization of the catalysts was performed using XRD, FESEM-EDS, N2 physisorption, and XPS, revealing the successful loading of TMS, the formation of microflower-like architectures and the generation of sulfur vacancies. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that doping ZnS, Bi2S3, CdS and MoS2 improved the intrinsic CO2 reduction activity of the CuS catalyst. Particularly, the MoS2-CuS composite catalyst with imperfect petal-like structure showed uniform distribution of edge Mo sites, which worked synergistically with the formed grain boundaries (GBs) and undercoordinated S vacancy sites in promoting CO2 activation, stabilizing *COOH adsorption, facilitating *CO desorption, and lowering the energy barrier of the potential-limiting step for improved CO selectivity. The MoS2-CuS catalyst achieved a maximum CO selectivity of 83.2% at –0.6 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a high CO cathodic energetic efficiency of 100%. At this potential, the catalyst maintained stable catalytic activity and CO selectivity during a 333-min electrolysis process. 42. Performance Analysis of an Efficient Integration System of Coal-Fired Power Plant, Solar Thermal Energy and CO2 Capture.

Abstract

Coal-fired power plant is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The post-combustion capture is a promising method for CO2 emission reduction but the high thermal demand is unbearable. To address this issue, solar thermal energy and CO2 capture are jointly integrated into the coal-fired power plant in this study. The solar thermal energy is employed to meet the heat requirement of the CO2 capture process, thereby avoiding the electricity loss caused by self-driven CO2 capture. Furthermore, the heat released from the carbonation reaction of MgO adsorbent is integrated into the steam Rankine cycle. By partially substituting the extracted steam for feedwater heating, the electricity output of the power plant is further increased. According to the results from the developed model, the system could achieve a CO2 capture rate of 86.5% and an electricity output enhancement of 9.8% compared to the reference system, which consists of a self-driven CO2 capture coal-fired power plant and PV generation unit. The operational strategy is also optimized and the amount of CO2 emission reduction on a typical day is increased by 11.06%.
