SignificanceAerosol-cloud interaction affects the cooling of Earth's climate, mostly by activation of aerosols as cloud condensation nuclei that can increase the amount of sunlight reflected back to space. But the controlling physical processes remain uncertain in current climate models. We present a lidar-based technique as a unique remote-sensing tool without thermodynamic assumptions for simultaneously profiling diurnal aerosol and water cloud properties with high resolution. Direct lateral observations of cloud properties show that the vertical structure of low-level water clouds can be far from being perfectly adiabatic. Furthermore, our analysis reveals that, instead of an increase of liquid water path (LWP) as proposed by most general circulation models, elevated aerosol loading can cause a net decrease in LWP.

Over the past 30 years, the Arctic Dipole Anomaly (DA) has repeatedly led to record lows in summer sea ice extent, with cloud radiative effects (CRE) playing a crucial regulatory role. Here, we reveal the CRE variations between positive and negative DA events and elucidate the slowing impacts of CRE on sea ice thickness (SIT) changes. The DA triggers robust meridional winds and transpolar drift, markedly reducing SIT in the Beaufort Sea (BeS), Chukchi Sea (CS), and East Siberian Sea (ESS), while increasing it in the Greenland Sea (GS). CRE significantly slow SIT changes, contributing +14.4, +4.4, +16.4, and −26.7 cm to changes from June to August, against total changes of −55.9, −29.4, −39.8, and +42.8 cm in September over BeS, CS, ESS, and GS, respectively. This study underscores the key impacts of CRE on sea ice variation, emphasizing their significance in the polar climate system. Plain Language Summary: The Arctic Dipole Anomaly is one of the principal atmospheric circulation patterns in the Arctic region, significantly influencing the spatial distribution of sea ice through induced changes in polar wind directions. These wind changes also affect the fraction of Arctic clouds and, by modifying cloud‐surface radiative forcing, alter the surface energy balance. Utilizing 20 years of multi‐source observation data along with reanalysis meteorology, we observed that during the summer, a positive Arctic Dipole Anomaly significantly decreases the thickness of sea ice in the Pacific sector and increases it in the Atlantic sector. During this period, variations in cloud‐surface radiative forcing substantially slow the extent of sea ice thickness reduction/increase. In other words, without considering the impact of cloud radiative forcing, the changes in sea ice thickness would be more severe. As a crucial element in the Earth's system, development of convective clouds is still insufficiently understood and simulated in both weather and climate models, particularly for small‐scale regional convective clouds. In this study, a series of convective clouds cases with relatively small scales are selected over south China, and the evolution characteristics of those convective clouds are investigated using high spatiotemporal resolution geostationary satellite data. Statistical results show that the shorter the life cycle or the smaller the area, the higher the proportion of convective clouds. Notably, approximately 79.23% of convective clouds have a life cycle of less than 3 hr, and 63.81% have an area of less than 500 km2 for selected cases. In addition, there are significant differences in the cloud characteristics and meteorological parameters during various convective cloud stages and durations. Nevertheless, the relative proportions of convective clouds at three identified stages remain relatively constant with almost no dependence on duration of convective clouds, which are 33.50%, 23.92%, and 42.58% for the developing, mature, and dissipation stages, respectively. In addition, we find that the cloud‐top cooling rate during the developing stage also affects the characteristics of the later stage of convective clouds. Quantitatively, the average cloud area and duration changed by 157.03 km2 and 0.17 hr when the cloud‐top cooling rate varies by 15 K/h. The initiation and evolution of convective clouds are not well resolved, making the simulation of convective clouds highly challenging among current weather and climate models, particularly in south China, a hotpot of convective clouds. Evolution characteristics of convective clouds with relatively small spatial scales are investigated in this study based on the high spatiotemporal resolution Himawari‐8 data. It shows that convective clouds have significant diurnal variation, while with short‐term (duration less than 3 hr) and small‐scale (area less than 500 km2) convective clouds dominant. In addition, there are significant differences in cloud characteristics and meteorological conditions for convective clouds at various stages or with different durations. However, the duration proportion of convective clouds at different stages (developing, mature, and dissipation stages) remains basically the same relative to the total convective cloud life cycle, no matter how long the duration of convective cloud life cycle is. The dilute-foam dispersion system improves oil recovery by reducing interfacial tension between oil and water, altering wettability, and diverting displaced fluids by plugging larger pores. An optimized foaming system is obtained by formability evaluation experiments, in which the half-life for drainage and foaming volume by different types and concentrations of surfactants are analyzed, followed by the addition of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) with varied concentrations to enhance the foam stability. Using COMSOL Multiphysics 5.6 software, the Jamin effect and plugging mechanism of the water–gas dispersion system in narrow pore throats were simulated. This dispersion system is applied to assist CO2 huff-n-puff in a low-permeability core, combined with the online NMR method, to investigate its effects on enhanced oil recovery from the pore scale. Core-flooding experiments with double-pipe parallel cores are then performed to check the effect and mechanism of this dilute-foam dispersion system (DFDS) on enhanced oil recovery from the core scale. Results show that foam generated by combining 0.6% alpha-olefin sulfonate (AOS) foaming agent with 0.3% HPAM foam stabilizer exhibits the strongest foamability and the best foam stability. The recovery factor of the DFDS-assisted CO2 huff-n-puff method is improved by 6.13% over CO2 huff-n-puff, with smaller pores increased by 30.48%. After applying DFDS, the minimum pore radius for oil utilization is changed from 0.04 µm to 0.029 µm. The calculation method for the effective working distance of CO2 huff-n-puff for core samples is proposed in this study, and it is increased from 1.7 cm to 2.05 cm for the 5 cm long core by applying DFDS. Double-pipe parallel core-flooding experiments show that this dispersion system can increase the total recovery factor by 17.4%. The DFDS effectively blocks high-permeability layers, adjusts the liquid intake profile, and improves recovery efficiency in heterogeneous reservoirs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The variability of stratospheric water vapor (SWV) plays a crucial role in stratospheric chemistry and Earth's energy budget, strongly influenced by sea surface temperature (SST). In this study, we systematically investigate the response of lower-SWV (LSWV) to regional sea surface temperature changes using idealized SST patch experiments within a climate model. The results indicate that LSWV is most sensitive to tropical sea surface temperature, with the strongest response occurring in late autumn and early winter. Warming of the tropical Indian Ocean and western Pacific (WP) leads to stratospheric drying, while warming of the tropical Atlantic (TA) and eastern Pacific results in stratospheric moistening. The drying impact on LSWV due to warming in the western Pacific Ocean exceeds the wet effect in the eastern Pacific Ocean by approximately 60%. The variations in tropical SST influence LSWV by modulating the temperature at the tropical tropopause layer, especially over the Indo-Pacific warm pool through Matsuno–Gill responses. Furthermore, the response of LSWV to tropical SST changes exhibits nonnegligible nonlinearity, which indicates the importance of nonlinearity in determining the LSWV response to global surface warming. Significance Statement: In this study, we explore how changes in the temperature of the ocean's surface can affect the amount of water vapor in the stratosphere, a layer of Earth's atmosphere. Understanding this relationship is important because water vapor in the stratosphere can influence both our climate and the chemistry of the atmosphere. Using a climate model, we found that water vapor in the lower stratosphere is especially responsive to temperature changes in tropical ocean regions. Specifically, when the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific get warmer, the stratosphere tends to get drier. On the other hand, warming in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific leads to more moisture in the stratosphere. The way these changes add up is complex and not simply a sum of individual parts, especially in tropical warm pool regions.
