Resonators and resonator-based oscillators are used in most electronics systems and they are classified as either mechanical or electrical, with fixed or difficult-to-tune resonant frequencies. Here, we propose an electro-superlubric spring, whose restoring force between two contacting sliding solid surfaces in the structural superlubric state is linearly dependent on the sliding displacement from the balanced position. We use theoretical analysis and finite element methods to study the restoring force and stability. The stiffness of this electro-superlubric spring is proportional to the square of the applied electric bias, facilitating continuous tuning from zero to several megahertz or gigahertz for the microscale or nanoscale resonators, respectively. Furthermore, we propose an electro-superlubric oscillator that is easily operated by varying a pair of harmonic voltages. The resonant frequency, resonant amplitude, quality factor, and maximum resonant speed can be continuously tuned via the applied voltage and bias. These results indicate significant potential in the applications of electro-superlubric resonators and oscillators. Microscale resonators are widely used in modern technology and achieving large tunability of their resonant frequency is highly desirable. Here, a design for electro-superlubric springs, based on a restoring force between sliding solid surfaces, is predicted to have continuously tunable resonant frequencies from zero to several GHz.

The anisotropic fracture toughness G(θ) is an intrinsic feature of graphene and is fundamental for fabrication, functioning, and robustness of graphene-based devices. However, existing results show significant discrepancies on the anisotropic factor, i.e., the ratio between zigzag (ZZ) and armchair (AC) directions, G_{ZZ}/G_{AC}, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Here, we investigate the anisotropic fracture of graphene by atomic steps on cleaved graphite surfaces. Depending on the relation between the peeling direction and local lattice orientation, two categories of steps with different structures and behaviors are observed. In one category are straight steps well aligned with local ZZ directions, while in the other are steps consisting of nanoscale ZZ and AC segments. Combined with an analysis on fracture mechanics, the microscale morphology of steps and statistics of their directions provides a measurement on the anisotropic factor of G_{ZZ}/G_{AC}=0.971, suggesting that the ZZ direction has a slightly lower fracture toughness. The results provide an experimental benchmark for the widely scattered existing results, and offer constraints on future models of graphene fracture.

Wear-free sliding between two contacted solid surfaces is the ultimate goal in the effort to extend the lifetime of mechanical devices, especially when it comes to inventing new types of micro-electromechanical systems where wear is often a major obstacle. Here we report experimental observations of wear-free sliding for a micrometer-sized graphite flake on a diamond-like-carbon (DLC) surface under ambient conditions with speeds up to 2.5 m/s, and over a distance of 100 km. The coefficient of friction (COF) between the microscale graphite flake, a van der Waals (vdW) layered material and DLC, a non-vdW-layered material, is measured to be of the order of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{upgreek} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document} }{}${10^{ - 3}}$\end{document}, which belongs to the superlubric regime. Such ultra-low COFs are also demonstrated for a microscale graphite flake sliding on six other kinds of non-vdW-layered materials with sub-nanometer roughness. With a synergistic analysis approach, we reveal the underlying mechanism to be the combination of interfacial vdW interaction, atomic-smooth interfaces and the low normal stiffness of the graphite flake. These features guarantee a persistent full contact of the interface with weak interaction, which contributes to the ultra-low COFs. Together with the extremely high in-plane strength of graphene, wear-free sliding is achieved. Our results broaden the scope of superlubricity and promote its wider application in the future., Wear-free sliding for an ultra-long distance of 100 km is achieved by microscale superlubric graphite/DLC heterojunctions under ambient conditions, promising wide application in micro-electromechanical systems, hard drives, bearings etc.

The structural superlubricity (SSL), a state of near-zero friction between two contacted solid surfaces, has been attracting rapidly increasing research interest since it was realized in microscale graphite in 2012. An obvious question concerns the implications of SSL for micro- and nanoscale devices such as actuators. The simplest actuators are based on the application of a normal load; here we show that this leads to remarkable dynamical phenomena in microscale graphite mesas. Under an increasing normal load, we observe mechanical instabilities leading to dynamical states, the first where the loaded mesa suddenly ejects a thin flake and the second characterized by peculiar oscillations, during which a flake repeatedly pops out of the mesa and retracts back. The measured ejection speeds are extraordinarily high (maximum of 294 m/s), and correspond to ultrahigh accelerations (maximum of 1.1×1010 m/s2). These observations are rationalized using a simple model, which takes into account SSL of graphite contacts and sample microstructure and considers a competition between the elastic and interfacial energies that defines the dynamical phase diagram of the system. Analyzing the observed flake ejection and oscillations, we conclude that our system exhibits a high speed in SSL, a low friction coefficient of 3.6×10−6, and a high quality factor of 3×107 compared with what has been reported in literature. In extended-reach and directional drilling, cuttings transport is a key issue associated with the efficiency of hole-cleaning and drilling operation. If the cuttings cannot be returned to the surface in time, many technical difficulties may arise such as excessive torque and drag, stuck pipe, and loss of well control. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach with Eulerian–Eulerian (EE) multiphase model was employed to comprehensively understand and analyze the effect of several drilling operation parameters, mud rheological properties, and specularity coefficient (representing various wellbore wall conditions) on the cuttings transport performance. A commercial CFD software (ANSYS FLUENT™ 19.1) was used to implement all simulations, and a sensitivity analysis was executed with an error of less than 5%. Furthermore, the motion patterns of cuttings were observed and analyzed under various factors. The results show that the cuttings transport performance is sensitive to the wellbore wall condition. In the lower side of annuli, the volume fraction of cuttings increases significantly by 28% with increasing specularity coefficients. Additionally, the combined influence of critical shear rate and flow rate on the cuttings distribution was investigated. The relative reduction rate of cuttings concentration decreased by 30% with increasing critical shear rate at the fluid velocity of 0.4 m/s, while that didn't change so obviously at the fluid velocity of 0.8 m/s.

Structural superlubricity (SSL) is a state of nearly zero friction and zero wear between two directly contacted solid surfaces. Recently, SSL was achieved in mesoscale and thus opened the SSL technology which promises great applications in Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS), sensors, storage technologies, etc. However, load issues in current mesoscale SSL studies are still not clear. The great challenge is to simultaneously measure both the ultralow shear forces and the much larger normal forces, although the widely used frictional force microscopes (FFM) and micro tribometers can satisfy the shear forces and normal forces requirements, respectively. Here we propose a hybrid two-axis force sensor that can well fill the blank between the capabilities of FFM and micro tribometers for the mesoscopic SSL studies. The proposed sensor can afford 1mN normal load with 10 nN lateral resolution. Moreover, the probe of the sensor is designed at the edge of the structure for the convenience of real-time optical observation. Calibrations and preliminary experiments are conducted to validate the performance of the design.

Currently, industries seek to optimize the development of technology from energy-saving, economic, and environmental perspectives. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is one of the most effective wastewater treatment systems. However, it requires considerable energy and causes significant operating costs. A recently emerged application of using fluidic oscillators (FOs) to generate microbubbles has attracted extensive attention, as it consumes much less energy and has proven to be a more energy-efficient technique. In this article, a microbubble generator based on FOs is introduced into the flotation tank, and an energy-saving water treatment system, namely fluidic air flotation (FAF), is presented. Using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, the flow pattern of the FAF is investigated. It is observed that FAF generates a dynamic flow pattern, which is beneficial for bubble removal. At the upper part of the separation zone, the flow pattern exhibits a wavy shape. The flow pattern at the lower part switches between clockwise and counterclockwise. The air distribution of the separation zone is also studied. It is found that the height of the “white water” zone almost linearly decreases with the increase in bubble diameter and diffuser size. FAF consumes almost no energy and occupies a small area, and it is expected to provide a promising solution to develop a new generation of the wastewater treatment system.

The partition of n-butanol in Winsor type III (W-III) microemulsions was investigated in this work. Three kinds of anionic surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dodecyl sulfonate (DSS), and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS)) and two kinds of anionic/cationic surfactant mixtures (SDS/octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) mixtures and DSS/OTAC mixtures) were studied. Internal standard gas chromatography was employed in n-butanol content analysis. The results showed that no water exists in the excess oil (EO) phase and no oil exists in the excess water (EW) phase. For the W-III microemulsions obtained by salinity scanning, relatively constant n-butanol content in the EO (11–12 v%) and EW (1–4 v%) was found under different salinities. Accurate measurement of n-butanol content in each phase is important for those systems having low solubilization ability. For the W-III microemulsions prepared using SDS/OTAC surfactant mixture, the percentage of n-butanol distributed into the interfacial layer decreased while the fraction of n-butanol in the interfacial layer first increased sharply and then tended to be stable with the addition of n-butanol. For the different optimum W-III microemulsion systems tested, most of the surfactant-to-alcohol molar ratio data are near 1:3, but obvious deviation could be observed for some data. On the basis of the accurate measurement of n-butanol content in the EO and EW phases, the standard free energy, ΔG in (T = 298.15 K) of n-butanol transferring from the EO phase to the interfacial region was calculated. The results show negative ΔG in values. For microemulsions with the same components, n-butanol content is an important factor influencing the ΔG in value, and a high absolute value of ΔG in leads to high solubilization ability.

In this paper, a new method based on SBR method is proposed to calculate the electromagnetic scattering problem of electrically large target. In traditional SBR method, the split size is usually less than 0.4 wavelength to ensure the accuracy. In this paper, the split size which could describe the shape of the target is enough. So the calculating memory and time can be reduced greatly. And the parallel technology is utilized to further accelerate the speed of the program.
