The growing ``Hubble tension'' has prompted the need for precise measurements of cosmological distances. This paper demonstrates a purely geometric approach for determining the distance to extragalactic binaries through a joint analysis of spectroastrometry (SA), radial velocity (RV), and light curve (LC) observations. A parameterized model for the binary system is outlined, and simulated SA, RV, and LC data are computed to infer the probability distribution of model parameters based on the mock data. The impact of data quality and binary parameters on distance uncertainties is comprehensively analyzed, showcasing the method's potential for high-precision distance measurements. For a typical eclipsing binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the distance uncertainty is approximately 6% under reasonable observational conditions. Within a specific range of data quality and input parameters, the distance measurement precision of individual binary star systems is generally better than 10%. As a geometric method based on the simplest dynamics, it is independent of empirical calibration and the systematics caused by model selections can be tested using nearby binaries with known distances. By measuring multiple binary star systems or monitoring one binary system repeatedly, geometric distance measurements of nearby galaxies can be achieved, providing valuable insights into the Hubble tension and advancing our understanding of the universe's structure and evolution., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted by ApJ

Changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs), characterized by emerging or disappearing of broad lines accompanied with extreme continuum flux variability, have drawn much attention for their potential of revealing physical processes underlying AGN evolution. We perform seven-season spectroscopic monitoring on Mrk~1018, one of the earliest identified CL-AGN. Around 2020, we detect a full-cycle changing-look transition of Mrk~1018 within one year, associated with a nucleus outburst, which likely arise from the disk instability in the transition region between the outer standard rotation-dominated disk and inner advection-dominated accretion flow. Over the past forty-five years, the accretion rate of Mrk~1018 changed 1000 times and the maximum Eddington ratio reached 0.02. By investigating the relation between broad-line properties and Eddington ratio ($L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$), we find strong evidence that the full-cycle type transition is regulated by accretion. There exists a turnover point in the Balmer decrement, which is observed for the first time. The broad Balmer lines change from a single peak in Type 1.0-1.2 to double peaks in Type 1.5-1.8 and the double-peak separation decreases with increasing accretion rate. We also find that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the broad Balmer lines obeys FWHM$\propto (L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd})^{-0.27}$, as expected for a virialized BLR. The velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm line}$ follows a similar trend in Type 1.5-1.8, but displays a sharp increases in Type 1.0-1.2, resulting in a dramatic drop of FWHM/$\sigma_{\rm line}$. These findings suggest that a virialized BLR together with accretion-dependent turbulent motions might be responsible for the diversity of BLR phenomena across AGN population., Comment: 24pages, 12figures, accepted by ApJS

Changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei (CL AGN) exhibit drastic variations in broad emission lines (BELs), the mechanism of which remains unclear. Expanding the sample of CL AGN is helpful to reveal the mechanism. This study aims to identify more CL AGNs by cross-matching spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Our approach to identify CL AGN candidates is based on the automatic spectral fitting, followed by detailed visual inspections. Through this method, we present a sample of 88 CL AGNs, in which 77 sources being newly discovered. Within this sample, 59 CL AGNs primarily show the variability of the H$\beta$ line, 22 exhibit changes in both the H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ lines, and 7 mainly display variations in the H$\alpha$ line. Our findings reveal that the sequence of appearance and disappearance of the BELs aligns with the known CL sequence. We estimate the black hole mass and Eddington ratio for these CL AGNs, which range from $2.5\times 10^6$ to $8.0\times 10^8 M_\odot$ and from 0.001 to 0.13, respectively. The Eddington ratio is lower than that of most typical AGNs, and is consistent with the results of previous studies on CL AGN. We report two binary systems, LAMOST J035540+381550 (hereafter J035540) and LAMOST J035916+400732 (hereafter J035916), identified through the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) low-resolution survey (LRS). Each of these two systems contains an M-type star orbiting with a invisible compact object candidate. Follow-up spectroscopic observations of Palomar 200-inch telescope (P200) enhance radial velocity measurements. We use radial velocities from LAMOST and P200, as well as light curves from Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) to constrain orbital parameters. The masses of the visible M-type stars are estimated by fitting the MIST isochrones and SEDs. The mass functions for the unseen companions are: $0.22\pm 0.01 M_{\odot}$ for J035540 and $0.16\pm 0.01 M_{\odot}$ for J035916. With the orbital and stellar parameters derived above and assuming the orbital inclination is 90 degree (edge-on), we find that the minimum masses of the invisible companions exceeds that of the visible stars. The single-lined feature and the dynamical evidence suggest the presence of compact objects. J035540's ZTF light curve, modeled with PHOEBE, yields a compact object mass of $0.70^{+0.12}_{-0.05} M_{\odot}$. For J035916, ellipsoidal modulation analysis constrains the light curve amplitude, yielding a compact object mass range of $0.57-0.90 M_{\odot}$. The mass estimates indicate that both are likely white dwarfs. The stellar spectra from LAMOST Medium Resolution Survey can be used to search for compact objects in binaries. The LAMOST DR10 catalog includes > 980, 000 targets with multiple medium resolution spectra. We select the targets with large or rapid radial velocity variation, and obtained an input-sample of 1822 sources. We use light curves and spectra to identify and exclude eclipsing binaries and double-lined spectroscopic binaries in the input-sample. We finally derive a catalog of 89 candidates with well-folded radial velocity, which are all single-lined spectroscopic binaries, indicating an unseen companion residing in each system. The mass function of each system can be well constrained based on the radial velocity curve. In our sample, 26 sources have mass function higher than 0.1 $M_{\odot}$, among which 18 sources have ellipsoidal type light curves. In our opinion, compact objects are likely existent in all these 26 binaries, which are worth follow-up identification., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Continuum reverberation mapping with high-cadence, long-term UV/optical monitoring of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) enables us to resolve the AGN central engine sizes on different timescales. The frequency-resolved time lags of NGC 5548 (the target for the AGN STORM I campaign) are inconsistent with the X-ray reprocessing of the classical Shakura $\&$ Sunyaev disk model. Here we show that the frequency-resolved time lags in NGC 5548 can be well produced by the Corona-Heated Accretion-disk Reprocessing (CHAR) model. Moreover, we make the CHAR model predictions of the frequency-resolved time lags for Mrk 817, the source of the AGN STORM II campaign. We also obtain the frequency-resolved time lags as a function of the black-hole mass and Eddington ratio, which is valid for black-hole masses from $10^{6.5}$ to $10^9\ M_{\odot}$, and Eddington ratios from 0.01 to 1. Moreover, we demonstrate that, with the time spans of current continuum reverberation-mapping campaigns, the lag-luminosity relation of the CHAR model can be $\tau_{\mathrm{gz}}\propto L_{\mathrm{5100}}^{0.55\pm0.04}$, which is consistent with observations. We present a noteworthy transient AT 2021aeuk exhibiting three distinct optical flares between 2018 and 2023. It is hosted in a radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxy, with an optical image showing a minor tidal morphology and a red mid-infrared color W1-W2=1.1. Flares II and III exhibit rapid rises, and long-term decays (around 1000 days) with recurring after-peak bumps. The g-r color after subtracting the reference magnitude exhibited a rapid drop and recovery during Flare II, followed by the minor after-peak evolution in blue colors. We applied a canonical tidal disruption event (TDE) fitting on the light curves which gives a decay index p of $-2.99_{-0.14}^{+0.13}$ for Flare II and $-1.61_{-0.65}^{+0.34}$ for Flare III. The blackbody fitting shows lower temperatures ($\sim 10^{3.8}$K) with minor after-peak evolution. The blackbody radius ($\gtrsim 10^{16}\ \rm cm$) and luminosity ($\sim 10^{45}\rm erg\ s^{-1}$) are larger than the typical TDE sample's. The time lag (in rest frame) between ZTF g- and r-band ($\rm \tau_{g,r}=3.4^{+1.0}_{-0.9}$ days) significantly exceeds the prediction from the standard accretion disk. Pre-burst spectra reveal prominent Bowen fluorescence lines, indicating a vigorous or potentially long-lasting process that enriches the local metallicity. Additionally, we derived black hole masses of $\log\it{M}_{\bullet}\rm=7.09^{+0.18}_{-0.31}\ \it{M}_{\odot}$ and $\log\it{M}_{\bullet}\rm=7.52^{+0.08}_{-0.10}\ \it{M}_{\odot}$ using $\rm H\beta$ and $\rm H\alpha$ emission lines. The variation and recurring features of AT 2021aeuk are not likely induced by the radio-beaming effect or Type-II superluminous supernova (SLSN-II), however, we cannot rule out the possibility of TDE or enhanced active galactic nuclei (AGN) accretion process. The time-domain (TD) surveys of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) yield high-cadence radial velocities, paving a new avenue to study binary systems including compact objects. In this work, we explore LAMOST TD spectroscopic data of four K2 plates and present a sample of six single-lined spectroscopic binaries that may contain compact objects. We conduct analyses using phase-resolved radial velocity measurements of the visible star, to characterize each source and to infer the properties of invisible companion. By fitting the radial velocity curves for the six targets, we obtain accurate orbital periods, ranging from $\sim$ (0.6-6) days, and radial velocity semi-amplitudes, ranging from $\sim$ (50-130) km s$^{-1}$. We calculate the mass function of the unseen companions to be between 0.08 and 0.17 $M_{\odot}$. Based on the mass function and the estimated stellar parameters of the visible star, we determine the minimum mass of the hidden star. Three targets, J034813, J063350, and J064850, show ellipsoidal variability in the light curves from K2, ZTF, and TESS surveys. Therefore, we can put constraints on the mass of the invisible star using the ellipsoidal variability. We identify no X-ray counterparts for these targets except for J085120, of which the X-ray emission can be ascribed to stellar activity. Infrared excess is an important probe of sub-stellar companions and/or debris disks around white dwarfs (WDs). Such systems are still rare for in-depth understanding of their formation and long-term evolution. One of the largest spectroscopic surveys carried out by the Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) recently released more than $3000$ WDs, a significant fraction of which have not undergone excess search. Here we present cross-correlation of LAMOST DR5 WD catalog with the Pan-STARRS, SDSS, UKIDSS, 2MASS, and {\it WISE}. By performing SED (spectral energy distribution) fitting for 846 WDs with $WISE$ detections, we identify 50 candidates with infrared excess, including 7 candidate WD+M dwarf binaries, 31 candidate WD+brown dwarf (BD) binaries and 12 candidate WD+dust disk systems. 8 of the dust disk systems are our new identifications. Utilizing a systematic survey with accurate stellar parameters derived from spectral fitting, our work is an important addition to previous searches for infrared excess from SDSS and {\it Gaia} WDs, and provides a significant ($\gtrsim8\%$) complement to current database of WDs with candidate BD companions and dust disks. The frequencies of WD+BD binaries and WD+dust disk systems are constrained to be $\lesssim3.7\%$ and $\sim1.4\%$, respectively. The properties of candidate dust disk systems are discussed. Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxies are an important type of active galactic nucleus (AGN), generally expected to be accreting at high Eddington rate. The properties of their outflows and importance of AGN feedback remain intriguing. We report on the discovery of fast outflowing warm absorbers (WAs) in the NLS1 PG 1001+054, with velocities in the range of 7000 to 9000 kilometers per second. They are identified with blueshifted Lyman alpha, N v and Si iv lines in the high resolution ultraviolet (UV) spectra taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We perform photoionization modeling using XSTAR with three WAs. The derived physical properties are typical of WAs in terms of ionization and column density, whereas the outflow velocities are significantly higher. The estimated location of these WAs ranges from 1 to 73 parsecs away from the AGN. Together with previous detection of high ionization absorber in the X-ray for PG 1001+054, we suggest that the fast outflowing UV absorber is probably a part of a multiphase outflow. Such structure is likely produced by the outflow launched from AGN at accretion disk scale, which shocks the ambient ISM producing stratified absorbers. Assuming contribution from the three WAs at tens of parsecs, the estimated ratio between the kinetic power of the outflow and AGN Eddington luminosity could reach 1.7 percent, raising the possibility of sufficient influence on the host galaxy when compared to some theoretical models for efficient AGN feedback., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. Recent studies have revealed the global deposition on Earth of radioactive elements (e.g., $^{60}$Fe) resulting from the metal-enriched ejecta of nearby (within $\sim 100$ pc) supernova explosions. The majority of neutron stars in our Solar neighborhood remain to be discovered. Here we report the discovery of the nearest ($127.7 \pm 0.3$ pc) neutron star candidate in the single-lined spectroscopic binary LAMOST J235456.76+335625.7 (hereafter J2354). Utilizing the multi-epoch spectra and high-cadence periodic light curves, we measure the mass of the visible star ($M_{\rm vis}=0.70\pm 0.05\ M_{\odot}$) and determine the mass function of the invisible object $f(M)=0.525 \pm 0.004\ M_{\odot}$, i.e., the mass of the unseen compact object is $M_{\rm inv} \geq 1.26 \pm 0.03\ M_{\odot}$. The excess UV emission due to a hot supramassive white dwarf is absent. Hence, it is likely that J2354 harbors a neutron star. J2354 is X-ray dim (the $0.1$--$2.4$ keV luminosity $<10^{30}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$) since it is not detected in the ROSAT all-sky surveys in X-ray. One-hour exceptionally sensitive radio follow-up observations with FAST, the largest single-dish radio telescope, failed to reveal any radio pulsating signals (the potential pulse power at $1.4$ GHz is $<6.8\times 10^{23}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$). Hence, the neutron star candidate in J2354 can only be discovered via our time-resolved observations. The alternative scenario involving a nearby supramassive cold white dwarf cannot be fully excluded. Our discovery demonstrates a promising way to unveil the missing population of backyard inactive neutron stars or supramassive cold white dwarfs in binaries by exploring the optical time domain, thereby facilitating understanding of the supernovae explosion and metal-enrichment history in our Solar neighborhood., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted

We present LAMOST~J041920.07+072545.4 (hereafter J0419), a close binary consisting of a bloated extremely low mass pre-white dwarf (pre-ELM WD) and a compact object with an orbital period of 0.607189~days. The large-amplitude ellipsoidal variations and the evident Balmer and He~I emission lines suggest a filled Roche lobe and ongoing mass transfer. No outburst events were detected in the 15 years of monitoring of J0419, indicating a very low mass transfer rate. The temperature of the pre-ELM, $T_\mathrm{eff} = 5793_{-133}^{+124}\,\rm K$, is cooler than the known ELMs, but hotter than most CV donors. Combining the mean density within the Roche lobe and the radius constrained from our SED fitting, we obtain the mass of the pre-ELM, $M_1 = 0.176\pm 0.014\,M_\odot$. The joint fitting of light and radial velocity curves yields an inclination angle of $i = 66.5_{-1.7}^{+1.4}$ degrees, corresponding to the compact object mass of $M_2 = 1.09\pm 0.05\,M_\odot$. The very bloated pre-ELM has a smaller surface gravity ($\log g = 3.9\pm 0.01$, $R_1 = 0.78 \pm 0.02\,R_\odot$) than the known ELMs or pre-ELMs. The temperature and the luminosity ($L_\mathrm{bol} = 0.62_{-0.10}^{+0.11}\,L_\odot$) of J0419 are close to the main sequence, which makes the selection of such systems through the HR diagram inefficient. Based on the evolutionary model, the relatively long period and small $\log g$ indicate that J0419 could be close to the "bifurcation period" in the orbit evolution, which makes J0419 to be a unique source to connect ELM/pre-ELM WD systems, wide binaries and cataclysmic variables., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures, ApJ, 933, 193

Optical time-domain surveys can unveil and characterize exciting but less-explored non-accreting and/or non-beaming neutron stars (NS) in binaries. Here we report the discovery of such a NS candidate using the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. The candidate, designated LAMOST J112306.9+400736 (hereafter J1123), is in a single-lined spectroscopic binary containing an optically visible M star. The star's large radial velocity variation and ellipsoidal variations indicate a relatively massive unseen companion. Utilizing follow-up spectroscopy from the Palomar 200-inch telescope and high-precision photometry from TESS, we measure a companion mass of $1.24_{-0.03}^{+0.03}~M_{\odot}$. Main-sequence stars with this mass are ruled out, leaving a NS or a massive white dwarf (WD). Although a massive WD cannot be ruled out, the lack of UV excess radiation from the companion supports the NS hypothesis. Deep radio observations with FAST yielded no detections of either pulsed or persistent emission. J1123 is not detected in numerous X-ray and gamma-ray surveys. These non-detections suggest that the NS candidate is not presently accreting and pulsing. NGC 5548 is one of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected for our long-term spectroscopic monitoring with the Lijiang 2.4~m telescope, aiming at investigating the origin and evolution of the broad-line regions (BLRs), accurately measuring the mass of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs), and understanding structure and evolution of the AGN. We have performed five-season observations for NGC~5548 with the median sampling interval ranging from 1.25 to 3 days. The light curves of the 5100~\AA\ continuum and broad emission lines are measured after subtracting contamination of the host galaxy starlight. The time lags of the broad He~{\sc ii}, He~{\sc i}, H$\gamma$, and H$\beta$ lines with respect to the 5100~\AA\ continuum are obtained for each season and their mean time lags over the five seasons are 0.69, 4.66, 4.60, 8.43 days, respectively. The H$\gamma$ and H$\beta$ velocity-resolved lag profiles in the seasons of 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2021 are constructed, from which an ``M-shaped'' structure is found in 2015 but disappears after 2018. Our five-season reverberation mapping (RM) yields an averaged virial SMBH mass of $M_\bullet/10^7M_\odot=14.22$, with a small standard deviation of $1.89$. By combining the previous 18 RM campaigns and our five-season campaign for NGC~5548, we find that there exists a time lag of 3.5~years between the changes in the BLR size and optical luminosity. Changing-look active galactic nucleus NGC~4151, which has attracted a lot of attention, is undergoing the second dramatic outburst stage in its evolutionary history. To investigate the geometry and kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR), and measure the mass of supermassive black hole in NGC~4151, we perform a seven-month photometric and spectroscopic monitoring program in 2020--2021, using the 2.4 m telescope at Lijiang Observatory. We successfully measure the time lags of the responses from broad \ha, \hb, \hg, \hei, and \heii\ emission lines to continuum variation, which are $7.63_{-2.62}^{+1.85}$, $6.21_{-1.13}^{+1.41}$, $5.67_{-1.94}^{+1.65}$, $1.59_{-1.11}^{+0.86}$, and $0.46_{-1.06}^{+1.22}$ days, respectively, following radial stratification. The ratios of time lags among these lines are $1.23 : 1.00 : 0.91 : 0.26 : 0.07$. We find that the continuum lag between the ultraviolet and optical bands can significantly affect the lag measurements of \hei\ and \heii. Virial and infalling gas motions coexist in this campaign, which is different from previous results, implying the evolutionary kinematics of BLR. Based on our measurements and previous ones in the literature, we confirm that the BLR of NGC~4151 is basically virialized. Finally, we compute the black hole mass through multiple lines, and the measurement from \hb\ to be $ 3.94_{-0.72}^{+0.90} \times 10^7 M_{\odot}$, which is consistent with previous results. The corresponding accretion rate is $0.02_{-0.01}^{+0.01} L_{\rm Edd} c^{-2}$, implying a sub-Eddington accretor., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We search for compact objects in binaries based on Gaia DR3. A sample of ten targets is derived under the conditions: radial velocity variable, low temperature ($T_{\rm eff} < 6000$ K), high mass function ($f(M_2) > 1 M_\odot$), and ellipsoidal-like light curves. Two targets have LAMOST spectroscopic observations, one of which is a double-lined spectroscopic binary. The observational data of seven targets are not self-consistent, since their photometric periods are even shorter than the theoretical minimum orbital periods calculated by the stellar parameters from Gaia DR3. After excluding these seven inconsistent targets and another target contaminated by a near-bright star, the remaining two targets may contain compact objects worth follow-up observations. We compile a sample of 92 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z<0.75 with $gri$ photometric light curves from the archival data of the Zwicky Transient Facility and measure the accretion disk sizes via continuum reverberation mapping. We employ Monte Carlo simulation tests to assess the influences of data sampling and broad emission lines and select out the sample with adequately high sampling cadences (3 days apart in average) and minimum contaminations of broad emission lines. The inter-band time delays of individual AGNs are calculated using the interpolated cross-correlation function and then these delays are fitted with a generalized accretion disk model, in which inter-band time delays are a power function of wavelength, black hole mass, and luminosity. A Markov-chain Monte Carlo method is adopted to determine the best parameter values. Overall the inter-band time delays can be fitted with the $\tau \ \propto \lambda^{4/3}$ relation as predicted from a steady-state, optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disk, however, the yielded disk size is systematically larger than expected, although the ratio of the measured to theoretical disk sizes depend on using the emissivity -- or responsivity -- weighted disk radius. These results are broadly consistent with previous studies, all together raising a puzzle about the "standard" accretion disk model.

The quasar 3C 273 has been observed with infrared spectroastrometry (SA) on broad Pa$\alpha$ line and optical reverberation mapping (RM) on broad H$\beta$ line. SA delivers information about the angular size and structure of the Pa$\alpha$ broad-line region (BLR), while RM delivers information about the physical size and structure of the H$\beta$ BLR. Based on the fact that the two BLRs share the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) and viewing inclination, a combination of SA and velocity-resolved RM (SARM) thereby allows us to simultaneously determine the SMBH mass and geometric distance through dynamically modeling the two BLRs. We construct a suite of dynamical models with different geometric configurations and apply a Bayesian approach to obtain the parameter inferences. Overall the obtained masses and distances are insensitive to specific BLR configurations but more or less depend on parameterizations of the vertical distributions. The most probable model, chosen in light of the Bayes factor, yields an angular-size distance of $\log\,(D_{\rm A}/{\rm Mpc}) = 2.83_{-0.28}^{+0.32}$ and SMBH mass of $\log\,(M_\bullet/M_\odot)=9.06_{-0.27}^{+0.21}$, which agrees with the relationships between SMBH masses and bulge properties. The BLRs have an inclination of $5_{-1}^{+1}$ degrees, consistent with that of the large-scale jet in 3C 273. Measuring the quasar distance through joint analysis of spectroastrometry (SA) and reverberation mapping (RM) observations is a new method for driving the development of cosmology. In this paper, we carry out detailed simulation and analysis to study the effect of four basic observational parameters (baseline length, exposure time, equivalent diameter and spectral resolution) on the data quality of differential phase curves (DPCs), furthermore on the accuracy of distance measurement. In our simulation, we adopt an axis symmetrical disc model of broad line region (BLR) to generate differential phase signals. We find that the differential phases and their Poisson errors could be amplified by extending the baseline, while the influence of OPD (optical path difference) errors can be reduced during fitting the BLR model. Longer exposure time or larger equivalent diameter helps reduce the absolute Poisson error. Therefore, the relative error of DPCs could be reduce by increasing any of the above three parameters, then the accuracy of distance measurement could be improved. In contrast, the uncertainty of $D_{\rm{A}}$ ( absolute angular distances) could be improved with higher spectral resolution, although the relative error of DPCs would be amplified. We show how the uncertainty of distance measurement varies with the relative error of DPCs. For our specific set of model parameters, without considering more complicated structures and kinematics of BLRs in our simulation, it is found that the relative error of DPCs $<$ 20$\%$ is a limit for accurate distance measurement. The relative error of DPCs have a lower limit (roughly 5$\%$) and the uncertainty of distance measurement can be better than 2$\%$.

The optical light curves of quiescent black hole low-mass X-ray binaries often exhibit significant non-ellipsoidal variabilities, showing the photospheric radiation of the companion star is veiled by other source of optical emission. Assessing this "veiling" effect is critical to the black hole mass measurement. Here in this work, we carry out a strictly simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric campaign on the prototype of black hole low-mass X-ray binary A0620-00. We find that for each observation epoch, the extra optical flux beyond a pure ellipsoidal modulation is positively correlated with the fraction of veiling emission, indicating the accretion disk contributes most of the non-ellipsoidal variations. Meanwhile, we also obtain a K2V spectral classification of the companion, as well as the measurements of the companion's rotational velocity $v \sin i = 83.8\pm1.9$ km s$^{-1}$ and the mass ratio between the companion and the black hole $q=0.063\pm0.004$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results from a spectroscopic monitoring campaign to obtain reverberation-mapping measurements and investigate the broad-line region kinematics for active galactic nuclei (AGN) of Mrk~817 and NGC~7469. This campaign was undertaken with the Lijiang 2.4-meter telescope, the median spectroscopic sampling is 2.0 days for Mrk~817 and 1.0 days for NGC~7469. We detect time lags of the broad emission lines including H$\beta$, H$\gamma$, He~{\sc ii} and He~{\sc i} for both AGNs, and including Fe~{\sc ii} for Mrk~817 with respect to the varying AGN continuum at 5100~\AA. Investigating the relationship between line widths and time lags of the broad emission lines, we find that the BLR dynamics of Mrk~817 and NGC~7469 are consistent with the virial prediction. We estimate the masses of central supermassive black hole (SMBH) and the accretion rates of both AGNs. Using the data of this campaign, we construct the velocity-resolved lag profiles of the broad H$\gamma$, H$\beta$, and He~{\sc i} lines for Mrk~817, which show almost the same kinematic signatures that the time lags in the red wing are slightly larger than the time lags in the blue wing. For NGC~7469, we only clearly construct the velocity-resolved lag profiles of the broad H$\gamma$ and H$\beta$, which show very similar kinematic signatures to the BLR of Mrk~817. These signatures indicate that the BLR of Keplerian motion in both AGNs seemingly has outflowing components during the monitoring period. We report the results of a multi-year spectroscopic and photometric monitoring campaign of two luminous quasars, PG~0923+201 and PG~1001+291, both located at the high-luminosity end of the broad-line region (BLR) size-luminosity relation with optical luminosities above $10^{45}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$. PG~0923+201 is for the first time monitored, and PG~1001+291 was previously monitored but our campaign has a much longer temporal baseline. We detect time lags of variations of the broad H$\beta$, H$\gamma$, Fe {\sc ii} lines with respect to those of the 5100~{\AA} continuum. The velocity-resolved delay map of H$\beta$ in PG~0923+201 indicates a complicated structure with a mix of Keplerian disk-like motion and outflow, and the map of H$\beta$ in PG~1001+291 shows a signature of Keplerian disk-like motion. Assuming a virial factor of $f_{\rm BLR}=1$ and FWHM line widths, we measure the black hole mass to be $118_{-16}^{+11}\times 10^7 M_{\odot}$ for PG~0923+201 and $3.33_{-0.54}^{+0.62}\times 10^7 M_{\odot}$ for PG~1001+291. Their respective accretion rates are estimated to be $0.21_{-0.07}^{+0.06} \times L_{\rm Edd}\,c^{-2}$ and $679_{-227}^{+259}\times L_{\rm Edd}\,c^{-2}$, indicating that PG~0923+201 is a sub-Eddington accretor and PG~1001+291 is a super-Eddington accretor. While the H$\beta$ time lag of PG~0923+201 agrees with the size-luminosity relation, the time lag of PG~1001+291 shows a significant deviation, confirming that in high-luminosity AGN the BLR size depends on both luminosity and Eddington ratio. Black hole mass estimates from single AGN spectra will be over-estimated at high luminosities and redshifts if this effect is not taken into account., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, accepted

Observing a telluric standard star for correcting the telluric absorption lines of spectrum will take a significant amount of precious telescope time, especially in the long-term spectral monitoring project. Beyond that, it's difficult to select a suitable telluric standard star near in both time and airmass to the scientific object. In this paper, we present a method of correcting the telluric absorption lines by combining the advantages of long slit spectroscopy. By rotating the slit, we observed the scientific object and a nearby comparison star in one exposure, so that the spectra of both objects should have the same telluric transmission spectrum. The telluric transmission spectrum was constructed by dividing the observed spectrum of comparison star by its stellar template, and was used to correct the telluric absorption lines of the scientific object. Using the long slit spectrograph of Lijiang 2.4-meter telescope, we designed a long-term spectroscopic observation strategy, and finished a four-year spectroscopic monitoring for a pair of objects (an active galactic nuclei and an non-varying comparison star). We applied this method to correct the telluric absorption lines of the long-term monitored spectra by Lijiang 2.4-meter telescope, and investigated the variation of the telluric absorptions at Lijiang Observatory. We found that the telluric absorption transparency is mainly modulated by the seasonal variability of the relative humidity, airmass and seeing. Using the scatter of the [O~III] $\lambda$5007 fluxes emitted from the narrow-line region of active galactic nuclei as an indicator, we found that the correction accuracy of the telluric absorption lines is 1%., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figure, accepted for publication in RAA (Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics)

As one of the most interesting Seyfert 1 galaxies, PG 2130+099 has been the target of several reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns over the years. However, its measured broad H$\beta$ line responses have been inconsistent, with time lags of $\sim$200 days, $\sim$25 days, and $\sim$10 days being reported for different epochs while its optical luminosity changed no more than 40%. To investigate this issue, we conducted a new RM-campaign with homogenous and high cadence (about $\sim$3 days) for two years during 2017--2019 to measure the kinematics and structure of the ionized gas. We successfully detected time lags of broad H$\beta$, He II, He I, and Fe II lines with respect to the varying 5100\AA continuum, revealing a stratified structure that is likely virialized with Keplerian kinematics in the first year of observations, but an inflow kinematics of the broad-line region from the second year. With a central black hole mass of $0.97_{-0.18}^{+0.15}\times 10^7~M_{\odot}$, PG 2130+099 has an accretion rate of $10^{2.1\pm0.5}L_{\rm Edd}c^{-2}$, where $L_{\rm Edd}$ is the Eddington luminosity and $c$ is speed of light, implying that it is a super-Eddington accretor and likely possesses a slim, rather than thin, accretion disk. We developed a spectroscopic monitoring project to investigate the kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) with ultra-fast outflows (UFOs). Mrk~79 is a radio-quiet AGN with UFOs and warm absorbers, had been monitored by three reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns, but its BLR kinematics is not understood yet. In this paper, we report the results from a new RM-campaign of Mrk~79, which was undertaken by Lijiang 2.4-m telescope. Mrk~79 is seeming to come out the faint state, the mean flux approximates a magnitude fainter than historical record. We successfully measured the lags of the broad emission lines including H$\beta~\lambda4861$, H$\gamma~\lambda4340$, He II $\lambda4686$ and He I $\lambda5876$ with respect to the varying AGN continuum. Based on the broad H$\beta~\lambda4861$ line, we measured black hole (BH) mass of $M_{\bullet}=5.13^{+1.57}_{-1.55}\times10^{7}M_{\odot}$, estimated accretion rates of ${\dot{M}_{\bullet}}=(0.05\pm0.02)~L_{\rm Edd}~c^{-2}$, indicating that Mrk~79 is a sub-Eddington accretor. We found that Mrk~79 deviates from the canonical Radius$-$Luminosity relationship. The marginal blueshift of the broad He II $\lambda4686$ line detected from rms spectrum indicates outflow of high-ionization gas. The velocity-resolved lag profiles of the broad H$\gamma~\lambda4340$, H$\beta~\lambda4861$, and He I $\lambda5876$ lines show similar signatures that the largest lag occurs in the red wing of the lines then the lag decreases to both sides. These signatures should suggest that the BLR of Keplerian motion probably exists the outflow gas motion. All findings including UFOs, warm absorbers, and the kinematics of high- and low-ionization BLR, may provide an indirect evidence that the BLR of Mrk~79 probably originates from disk wind., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

3C 273 is an intensively monitored flat-spectrum radio quasar with both a beamed jet and blue bump together with broad emission lines. The coexistence of the comparably prominent jet and accretion disk leads to complicated variability properties. Recent reverberation mapping monitoring for 3C 273 revealed that the optical continuum shows a distinct long-term trend that does not have a corresponding echo in the Hbeta fluxes. We compile multi-wavelength monitoring data from the Swift archive and other ground-based programs and clearly find two components of emissions at optical wavelength. One component stems from the accretion disk itself and the other component can be ascribed to the jet contribution, which also naturally accounts for the non-echoed trend in reverberation mapping data. We develop an approach to decouple the optical emissions from the jet and accretion disk in 3C 273 with the aid of multi-wavelength monitoring data. By assuming the disk emission has a negligible polarization in consideration of the low inclination of the jet, the results show that the jet contributes a fraction of ~10% at the minimum and up to ~40% at the maximum to the total optical emissions. This is the first time to provide a physical interpretation to the "detrending" manipulation conventionally adopted in reverberation mapping analysis. Distance measurements for extragalactic objects are a fundamental problem in astronomy and cosmology. In the era of precision cosmology, we urgently need better measurements of cosmological distances to observationally test the increasing $H_{0}$ tension of the Hubble constant measured from different tools. Using spectroastrometry, GRAVITY at The Very Large Telescope Interferometer successfully revealed the structure, kinematics and angular sizes of the broad-line region (BLR) of 3C 273 with an unprecedentedly high spatial resolution. Fortunately, reverberation mapping (RM) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) reliably provides linear sizes of their BLRs. Here we report a joint analysis of spectroastrometry and RM observations to measure AGN distances. We apply this analysis to 3C 273 observed by both GRAVITY and an RM campaign,and find an angular distance of $551.5_{-78.7}^{+97.3}\, {\rm Mpc}$ and $H_{0}=71.5_{-10.6}^{+11.9}\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$. Advantages of the analysis are 1) its pure geometrical measurements and 2) it simultaneously yields mass of the central black hole in the BLR. Moreover, we can conveniently repeat measurements of selected AGNs to efficiently reduce the statistical and systematic errors. Future observations of a reasonably sized sample ($\sim 30$ AGNs) will provide distances of the AGNs and hence a new way of measuring $H_{0}$ with a high precision $\left(\lesssim 3\%\right)$ to test the $H_{0}$ tension., Comment: 52pages, 9 figures

We report results of the first reverberation mapping campaign of I Zwicky 1 during $2014$-$2016$, which showed unambiguous reverberations of the broad H$\beta$ line emission to the varying optical continuum. From analysis using several methods, we obtain a reverberation lag of $\tau_{\rm H\beta}=37.2^{+4.5}_{-4.9}\,$ days. Taking a virial factor of $f_{_{\rm BLR}}=1$, we find a black hole mass of $M_{\bullet}=9.30_{-1.38}^{+1.26}\times 10^6 M_{\odot}$ from the mean spectra. The accretion rate is estimated to be $203.9_{-65.8}^{+61.0}\,L_{\rm Edd}c^{-2}$, suggesting a super-Eddington accretor, where $L_{\rm Edd}$ is the Eddington luminosity and $c$ is the speed of light. By decomposing {\it Hubble Space Telescope} images, we find that the stellar mass of the bulge of its host galaxy is $\log (M_{\rm bulge}/M_{\odot}) = \rm 10.92\pm 0.07$. This leads to a black hole to bulge mass ratio of $\sim 10^{-4}$, which is significantly smaller than that of classical bulges and elliptical galaxies. After subtracting the host contamination from the observed luminosity, we find that I Zw 1 follows the empirical $R_{\rm BLR}\propto L_{5100}^{1/2}$ relation., Comment: accepted by APJ

We compiled a sample of 73 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with reverberation mapping (RM) observations from RM campaigns including our ongoing campaign of monitoring super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs). This sample covers a large range of black hole (BH) mass $(M_{\bullet}=10^{6-9}~M_\odot)$, dimensionless accretion rates $(\dot{\mathscr{M}}=10^{-2.7}-10^{2.7})$ and 5100~\AA~luminosity $(L_{5100}=10^{42-46}~\rm erg~s^{-1})$, allowing us to systematically study the AGN variability and their relations with BH mass, accretion rates, and optical luminosity. We employed the damped random walk (DRW) model to delineate the optical variability of continuum at 5100~\AA~and obtained damped variability timescale ($\tau_{\rm d}$) and amplitude ($\sigma_{\rm d}$) using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. We also estimated the traditional variability amplitudes ($F_{\rm var}$), which provide a model-independent measure and therefore are used to test the DRW results. We found that AGN variability characteristics are generally correlated with $(M_{\bullet},\dot{\mathscr{M}},L_{5100})$. These correlations are smooth from sub-Eddington to super-Eddington accretion AGNs, probably implying that the AGN variability may be caused by the same physical mechanism., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, after ApJ proof

Despite many decades of study, the kinematics of the broad-line region of 3C~273 are still poorly understood. We report a new, high signal-to-noise, reverberation mapping campaign carried out from November 2008 to March 2018 that allows the determination of time lags between emission lines and the variable continuum with high precision. The time lag of variations in H$\beta$ relative to those of the 5100 Angstrom continuum is $146.8_{-12.1}^{+8.3}$ days in the rest frame, which agrees very well with the Paschen-$\alpha$ region measured by the GRAVITY at The Very Large Telescope Interferometer. The time lag of the H$\gamma$ emission line is found to be nearly the same as for H$\beta$. The lag of the Fe II emission is $322.0_{-57.9}^{+55.5}$ days, longer by a factor of $\sim$2 than that of the Balmer lines. The velocity-resolved lag measurements of the H$\beta$ line show a complex structure which can be possibly explained by a rotation-dominated disk with some inflowing radial velocity in the H$\beta$-emitting region. Taking the virial factor of $f_{\rm BLR} = 1.3$, we derive a BH mass of $M_{\bullet} = 4.1_{-0.4}^{+0.3} \times 10^8 M_{\odot}$ and an accretion rate of $9.3\,L_{\rm Edd}\,c^{-2}$ from the H$\beta$ line. The decomposition of its $HST$ images yields a host stellar mass of $M_* = 10^{11.3 \pm 0.7} M_\odot$, and a ratio of $M_{\bullet}/M_*\approx 2.0\times 10^{-3}$ in agreement with the Magorrian relation. In the near future, it is expected to compare the geometrically-thick BLR discovered by the GRAVITY in 3C 273 with its spatially-resolved torus in order to understand the potential connection between the BLR and the torus., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

NGC 5548 has been well spectroscopically monitored for reverberation mapping of the central kinematics by 19 campaigns. Using the maximum entropy method in this Letter, we build up a high-quality velocity-delay map of the H$\beta$ emission line in the light curves of the continuum and the line variations observed between 2015-2016. The map shows the response strength and lags of the velocity fields of the H$\beta$ emitting regions. The velocity-delay structure of the map is generally symmetric, with strong red and blue wings at time lag $\tau \leq 15$ days, a narrower velocity distribution at $\tau \geq 15$ days, and a deficit of response in the core. This is suggestive of a disk geometry of the broad-line region (BLR). The relatively weaker H$\beta$ response at the longer lags in the red side indicates anisotropic emission from the outer part of the BLR. We also recover the velocity-delay maps of NGC 5548 from the historical data of 13 years to investigate the long-term variability of its BLR. In general, the BLR of NGC 5548 was switching between the inflow and virialized phases in the past years. The resultant maps of seven years reveal inflow signatures and show decreasing lags, indicating that the changes in the BLR size are related to the infalling BLR gas. As one of the series of papers reporting on a large reverberation mapping campaign of super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we present the results of 10 SEAMBHs monitored spectroscopically during 2015-2017. Six of them are observed for the first time, and have generally higher 5100 \AA\ luminosities than the SEAMBHs monitored in our campaign from 2012 to 2015; the remaining four are repeat observations to check if their previous lags change. Similar to the previous SEAMBHs, the H$\beta$ time lags of the newly observed objects are shorter than the values predicted by the canonical $R_{\mathrm{H\beta}}$-$L_{5100}$ relation of sub-Eddington AGNs, by factors of $\sim2-6$, depending on the accretion rate. The four previously observed objects have lags consistent with previous measurements. We provide linear regressions for the $R_{\mathrm{H\beta}}$-$L_{5100}$ relation, solely for the SEAMBH sample and for low-accretion AGNs. We find that the relative strength of Fe II and the profile of the H$\beta$ emission line can be used as proxies of accretion rate, showing that the shortening of H$\beta$ lags depends on accretion rates. The recent SDSS-RM discovery of shortened H$\beta$ lags in AGNs with low accretion rates provides compelling evidence for retrograde accretion onto the black hole. These evidences show that the canonical $R_{\mathrm{H\beta}}$-$L_{5100}$ relation holds only in AGNs with moderate accretion rates. Type 1 active galactic nuclei display broad emission lines, regarded as arising from photoionized gas moving in the gravitational potential of a supermassive black hole. The origin of this broad-line region gas is unresolved so far, however. Another component is the dusty torus beyond the broad-line region, likely an assembly of discrete clumps that can hide the region from some viewing angles and make them observationally appear as Type 2 objects. Here we report that these clumps moving within the dust sublimation radius, like the molecular cloud G2 discovered in the Galactic center, will be tidally disrupted by the hole, resulting in some gas becoming bound at smaller radii while other gas is ejected and returns to the torus. The clumps fulfill necessary conditions to be photoionized. Specific dynamical components of tidally disrupted clumps include spiral-in gas as inflow, circularized gas, and ejecta as outflow. We calculate various profiles of emission lines from these clouds, and find they generally agree with H$\beta$ profiles of Palomar-Green quasars. We find that asymmetry, shape and shift of the profiles strongly depend on [O III], luminosity, which we interpret as a proxy of dusty torus angles. We study the long-term variability in the optical monitoring database of Ark~120, a nearby radio-quiet active galactic nucleus (AGN) at a distance of 143 Mpc (z=0.03271). We compiled the historical archival photometric and spectroscopic data since 1974 and conducted a new two-year monitoring campaign in 2015-2017, resulting in a total temporal baseline over four decades. The long-term variations in the optical continuum exhibit a wave-like pattern and the Hbeta integrated flux series varies with a similar behavior. The broad Hbeta profiles have asymmetric double peaks, which change strongly with time and tend to merge into a single peak during some epochs. The period in the optical continuum determined from various period-search methods is about 20 yr and the estimated false alarm probability with null hypothesis simulations is about 1*10^-3. The overall variations of the broad Hbeta profiles also follow the same period. However, the present database only covers two cycles of the suggested period, which strongly encourages continued monitoring to track more cycles and confirm the periodicity. Nevertheless, in light of the possible periodicity and the complicated Hbeta profile, Ark~120 is one candidate of the nearest radio-quiet AGNs with possible periodic variability, and it is thereby a potential candidate host for a sub-parsec supermassive black hole binary., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, and 4 tables; to match the published version

The hidden broad-line regions (BLRs) in Seyfert 2 galaxies, which display broad emission lines (BELs) in their polarized spectra, are a key piece of evidence in support of the unified model for active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, the detailed kinematics and geometry of hidden BLRs are still not fully understood. The virial factor obtained from reverberation mapping of type 1 AGNs may be a useful diagnostic of the nature of hidden BLRs in type 2 objects. In order to understand the hidden BLRs, we compile six type 2 objects from the literature with polarized BELs and dynamical measurements of black hole masses. All of them contain pseudobulges. We estimate their virial factors, and find the average value is 0.60 and the standard deviation is 0.69, which agree well with the value of type 1 AGNs with pseudobulges. This study demonstrates that (1) the geometry and kinematics of BLR are similar in type 1 and type 2 AGNs of the same bulge type (pseudobulges), and (2) the small values of virial factors in Seyfert 2 galaxies suggest that, similar to type 1 AGNs, BLRs tend to be very thick disks in type 2 objects., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

NGC 5548 is the best-observed reverberation-mapped active galactic nucleus with long-term, intensive monitoring. Here we report results from a new observational campaign between January and July, 2015. We measure the centroid time lag of the broad H$\beta$ emission line with respect to the 5100 \AA continuum and obtain $\tau_{\rm cent} = 7.20^{+1.33}_{-0.35}$ days in the rest frame. This yields a black hole mass of $M_{\bullet}=8.71^{+3.21}_{-2.61} $x$ 10^{7}M_{\odot}$ using a broad H$\beta$ line dispersion of $3124\pm302$ km s$^{-1}$ and a virial factor of $f_{_{\rm BLR}}=6.3\pm1.5$ for the broad-line region (BLR), consistent with the mass measurements from previous H$\beta$ campaigns. The high-quality data allow us to construct a velocity-binned delay map for the broad H$\beta$ line, which shows a symmetric response pattern around the line center, a plausible kinematic signature of virialized motion of the BLR. Combining all the available measurements of H$\beta$ time lags and the associated mean 5100 {\AA} luminosities over 18 campaigns between 1989 and 2015, we find that the H$\beta$ BLR size varies with the mean optical luminosity, but, interestingly, with a possible delay of $2.35_{-1.25}^{+3.47}$ yrs. This paper reports results of the third-year campaign of monitoring super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) between 2014-2015. Ten new targets were selected from quasar sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which are generally more luminous than the SEAMBH candidates in last two years. H$\beta$ lags ($\tau_{_{\rm H\beta}}$) in five of the 10 quasars have been successfully measured in this monitoring season. We find that the lags are generally shorter, by large factors, than those of objects with same optical luminosity, in light of the well-known $R_{_{\rm H\beta}}-L_{5100}$ relation. The five quasars have dimensionless accretion rates of $\dot{\mathscr{M}}=10-10^3$. Combining measurements of the previous SEAMBHs, we find that the reduction of H$\beta$ lags tightly depends on accretion rates, $\tau_{_{\rm H\beta}}/\tau_{_{R-L}}\propto\dot{\mathscr{M}}^{-0.42}$, where $\tau_{_{R-L}}$ is the H$\beta$ lag from the normal $R_{_{\rm H\beta}}-L_{5100}$ relation. Fitting 63 mapped AGNs, we present a new scaling relation for the broad-line region: $R_{_{\rm H\beta}}=\alpha_1\ell_{44}^{\beta_1}\,\min\left[1,\left(\dot{\mathscr{M}}/\dot{\mathscr{M}}_c\right)^{-\gamma_1}\right]$, where $\ell_{44}=L_{5100}/10^{44}\,\rm erg~s^{-1}$ is 5100 \AA\ continuum luminosity, and coefficients of $\alpha_1=(29.6_{-2.8}^{+2.7})$ lt-d, $\beta_1=0.56_{-0.03}^{+0.03}$, $\gamma_1=0.52_{-0.16}^{+0.33}$ and $\dot{\mathscr{M}}_c=11.19_{-6.22}^{+2.29}$. This relation is applicable to AGNs over a wide range of accretion rates, from $10^{-3}$ to $10^3$.
