1. Investigation Report on the Production and Utilization Status of Experimental Mini-pigs

Abstract

Objective To understand the current situation of the experimental miniature pig industry and promote its good development.Methods Using Questionnaire Star to design the survey content, the survey was conducted by targeted push and voluntary filling. The valid questionnaires collected were classified and summarized by EXCEL2010 software.Results A total of 35 entities participated in the survey, including 12 production entities and 23 user entities. There were 1 623 employees in the 35 entities, 927 (57.11%) with college degree or below, and 696 (42.89%) with bachelor degree or above. The largest number of employees have majors in animal science and animal medicine. The salary level of employees in the production entity is higher than that of the user entity, but the research output (published papers and patents) rate of the user entity in the past 5 years is higher than that of the production entity. The current inventory of miniature pigs in 12 production entities was 5 353, of which 3 471 (64.84%) were Bama pigs and 5 243 (97.95%) were ordinary grade pigs. The vaccination rate of swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease was 100%, and the animal mortality rate of seven entities was ≤3.0%. The profit of ordinary grade miniature pigs was 954 yuan/head, and that of SPF grade miniature pigs was 10 037 yuan/head.Conclusion It is suggested to strengthen market supervision, expand the channels for introducing professional and technical talents, accelerate the research of new quality testing technologies, promote the rapid transformation of miniature pig scientific research achievements, and establish a public service platform to strengthen information communication between supply and demand sides. We hope to work together with our colleagues to jointly promote the normalized, standardized, healthy and stable development of the experimental miniature pig industry.

Abstract

Abstract Background Our earlier work in the ultrasonograpy of localized scleroderma (LS) suggests that altered levels of echogenicity and vascularity can be associated with disease activity. Utrasound is clinically benign and readily available, but can be limited by operator dependence. We present our efforts to standardize image acquisition and interpretation of pediatric LS to better evaluate the correlation between specific sonographic findings and disease activity. Methods Several meetings have been held among our multi-center group (LOCUS) to work towards standardizing sonographic technique and image interpretation. Demonstration and experience in image acquisition were conducted at workshop meetings. Following meetings in 2007, an ultrasound measure was developed to standardize evaluation of differences in echogenicity and vascularity. Based upon our initial observations, we have labeled this an ultrasound disease activity measure. This preliminary measure was subsequently evaluated on over 180 scans of pediatric LS lesions. This review suggested that scoring levels should be expanded to better capture the range of observed differences. The revised levels and their definitions were formulated at a February 2009 workshop meeting. We have also developed assessments for scoring changes in tissue thickness and lesion size to better determine if these parameters aid evaluation of disease state. Results We have standardized our protocol for acquiring ultrasound images of pediatric LS lesions. A wide range of sonographic differences has been seen in the dermis, hypodermis, and deep tissue layers of active lesions. Preliminary ultrasound assessments have been generated. The disease activity measure scores for altered levels of echogenicity and vascularity in the lesion, and other assessments score for differences in lesion tissue layer thickness and changes in lesion size. Conclusions We describe the range of sonographic differences found in pediatric LS, and present our efforts to standardize ultrasound acquisition and image interpretation for this disease. We present ultrasound measures that may aid evaluation of disease state. These assessments should be considered a work in progress, whose purpose is to facilitate further study in this area. More studies are needed to assess their validity and reliability.

Abstract

Climate change-related environmental stresses can negatively impact crop productivity and pose a threat to sustainable agriculture. Plants have a remarkable innate ability to detect a broad array of environmental cues, including stresses that trigger stress-induced regulatory networks and signaling pathways. Transcriptional activation of plant pathogenesis related-1 (PR-1) proteins was first identified as an integral component of systemic acquired resistance in response to stress. Consistent with their central role in immune defense, overexpression of PR-1s in diverse plant species is frequently used as a marker for salicylic acid (SA)-mediated defense responses. Recent advances demonstrated how virulence effectors, SA signaling cascades, and epigenetic modifications modulate PR-1 expression in response to environmental stresses. We and others showed that transcriptional regulatory networks involving PR-1s could be used to improve plant resilience to stress. Together, the results of these studies have re-energized the field and provided long-awaited insights into a possible function of PR-1s under extreme environmental stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
