Identification of key transcription factors from transcriptome data by correlating gene expression levels with transcription factor binding sites is important for transcriptome data analysis. In a typical scenario, we always set a threshold to filter the top ranked differentially expressed genes and top ranked transcription factor binding sites. However, correlation analysis of filtered data can often result in spurious correlations. In this study, we tested four methods for creating the gene expression inputs (ranked gene list) in the correlation analysis: star coordinate map transformation (START), expression differential score (ED), preferential expression measure (PEM), and the specificity measure (SPM). Then, Kendall's tau correlation statistical algorithms implementing the standard (STD), LINEAR, MIX-LINEAR, DENSITY-CURVE, and MIXED-DENSITY-CURVE weighting methods were used to identify key transcription factors. ED was identified as the optimal method for creating a ranked gene list from filtered expression data, which can address the "unable to detect negative correlation" fallacy presented by other methods. The MIXED-DENSITY-CURVE was the most sensitive for identifying transcription factors from the gene set and list in which only the top proportion was correlated. Ultimately, 644 transcription factor candidates were identified from the transcriptome data of 1,206 cell lines, six of which were validated by wet lab experiments. Vibration monitoring is one of the most effective approaches for bearing fault diagnosis. Within this category of techniques, sparsity constraint-based regularization has received considerable attention for its capability to accurately extract repetitive transients from noisy vibration signals. The optimal solution of a sparse regularization problem is determined by the regularization term and the data fitting term in the cost function according to their weights, so a tradeoff between sparsity and data fidelity has to be made inevitably, which restricts conventional regularization methods from maintaining strong sparsity-promoting capability and high fitting accuracy at the same time. To address the limitation, a stepwise sparse regularization (SSR) method with an adaptive sparse dictionary is proposed. In this method, the bearing fault diagnosis is modeled as a multi-parameter optimization problem, including time indexes of the sparse dictionary and sparse coefficients. Firstly, sparsity-enhanced optimization is conducted by amplifying the regularization parameter, making the time indexes and the number of atoms adaptively converge to the moments when impulses occur and the number of impulses, respectively. Then, fidelity-enhanced optimization is carried out by removing the regularization term, thereby obtaining the high-precision reconstruction amplitudes. Simulations and experiments verify that the reconstruction accuracy of the SSR method outperforms other sparse regularization methods under most noise conditions, and thus the proposed method can provide more accurate results for bearing fault diagnosis. With the rapid development and increasing energy production capacity of high-power wind turbines, a corresponding increase in maintenance requirements has been observed. Reducing the failure rate of wind turbines is a critical objective, alongside decreasing affiliated operation and maintenance costs. This review focuses on the status monitoring, fault diagnosis, fault prediction, and status evaluation of wind turbines. The early fault diagnosis of wind turbines is explored with regard to existing condition monitoring technology. Moreover, the current mathematics-based fault diagnosis and smart fault diagnosis technologies are further explored. Through comprehensive investigation, this paper summarizes the research status of wind turbine fault prediction and complete machine status evaluation, conclusively presenting relevant research points and trends in the fault diagnosis, fault prediction, and status assessment of high-power wind turbines. Due to the recent rapid development of the wind energy industry, many wind turbines that have been operational over long periods will face degradation caused by aging effects; hence, an appropriate aging assessment method for wind turbines and their components is essential for optimizing the asset management and maintenance strategy of a wind farm. An aging assessment method is proposed for wind‐turbine electric‐pitch systems by introducing four individual aging indicators based on the examination of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and failure data, i.e. function, energy‐consumption, temperature, and reliability indicators. To obtain a reliable comprehensive assessment, an information‐fusion method has been developed based on a given reference value; the weighting factors in the information fusion were calculated based on the reference value, while reliability and robustness were verified using the SCADA and failure data from a wind farm over three years. A randomized exploratory clinical trial comparing an experimental treatment with a control treatment on a binary endpoint is often conducted to make a go or no‐go decision. Such an exploratory trial needs to have an adequate sample size such that it will provide convincing evidence that the experimental treatment is either worthwhile or unpromising relative to the control treatment. In this paper, we propose three new sample‐size determination methods for an exploratory trial, which utilize the posterior probabilities calculated from predefined efficacy and inefficacy criteria leading to a declaration of the worthwhileness or unpromisingness of the experimental treatment. Simulation studies, including numerical investigation, showed that all three methods could declare the experimental treatment as worthwhile or unpromising with a high probability when the true response probability of the experimental treatment group is higher or lower, respectively, than that of the control treatment group.
