Abstract

Acquiring the most representative examples via active learning (AL) can benefit many data-dependent computer vision tasks by minimizing efforts of image-level or pixel-wise annotations. In this paper, we propose a novel Collaborative Panoptic-Regional Active Learning framework (CPRAL) to address the semantic segmentation task. For a small batch of images initially sampled with pixel-wise annotations, we employ panoptic information to initially select unlabeled samples. Considering the class imbalance in the segmentation dataset, we import a Regional Gaussian Attention module (RGA) to achieve semantics-biased selection. The subset is highlighted by vote entropy and then attended by Gaussian kernels to maximize the biased regions. We also propose a Contextual Labels Extension (CLE) to boost regional annotations with contextual attention guidance. With the collaboration of semantics-agnostic panoptic matching and regionbiased selection and extension, our CPRAL can strike a balance between labeling efforts and performance and compromise the semantics distribution. We perform extensive experiments on Cityscapes and BDD10K datasets and show that CPRAL outperforms the cutting-edge methods with impressive results and less labeling proportion., Comment: This is not the final version of our paper, and we will upload a final version later

Abstract

It is important to study the failure mechanism of concrete by observing the crack expansion and capturing key structures at the mesoscale. This manuscript proposed a method for efficiently identifying aggregate boundary information by X-ray computed tomography technology (CT) and a discrete element modeling method (DEM) for equivalent random polygon aggregates. This method overcomes the shortcomings of the Grain Based Model (GBM) which is impossible to establish a mesoscopic model with a large difference in grain radius. Through the above two methods, the CT slice images were processed in batches, and the numbers of edges, axial length, elongation of the aggregate were identified. The feasibility of the method was verified by the comparison between experimental and simulating results. Three mesoscopic models for different porosities were established. Based on aggregate statistics, this manuscript achieved the meso-model recovery to the maximum extent. The test results show that the crack appeared at the tip of the aggregate firstly, and then the broken boundary was applied in the direction of the applied load and around the pores. Finally, the crack was selectively expanded under the axial force. During the loading process, the minor principal stress was normally distributed. As the porosity and loading time increased, the heterogeneity increased.

We demonstrated a method to pattern catalyst viainkjet printing to grow SWNTs, using metal salt solutions as the inks and an ordinary office-use printer. We printed water solutions of cobalt acetate on hydrophilic Si substrates and grew high quality SWNT films.

44. Engineering active edge sites of fractal-shaped single-layer MoS2catalysts for high-efficiency hydrogen evolution

Abstract

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a crucial step in electrochemical water splitting that demands an efficient, cheap, and stable catalyst to succeed in practical applications. Two-dimensional (2D) layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), known to contain active edge sites and a chemically inert basal plane, has provided great promise as a non-precious alternative to platinum-based catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen production from water. Here, we directly synthesize fractal-shaped single-layer MoS2with large tensile strain on fused silica. The as-synthesized MoS2with a large amount of exposed edge sites is superior to the triangle-shaped MoS2grown on SiO2for catalyzing HER. By controlling the MoS2grain size and coverage, etc., we identify the active sites of the MoS2. Electrocatalytic activity of the MoS2for the HER correlates linearly with the number of edge sites with an enhanced activity of ~ 2.74 × 10−7μA μm−1, due to the increased supplying of electrons to the active edge sites caused by the large tensile strain. The optimal HER electrocatalyst of the fractal-shaped single-layer MoS2, which has an edge-to-substrate ratio of about 0.33 µm−1, exhibits superior HER catalytic activities such as a low overpotential of 185 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 45 mV/dec, an exchange current density of 50.9 μA cm−2, and long-term stability. The present study provides new ways to design 2D HER electrocatalysts, including controlling the geometry, strain, and modulating the electrical conductivity.

Owing to the lattice match, aligned CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite array films composed of CH3NH3PbI3 microribbons with the length at the sub-millimeter scale were fabricated on ST cut quartz which showed a fast photo-response. Abstract

Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) with diameters of 1.0–1.5 nm (with similar bandgap to crystalline silicon) are highly desired for nanoelectronics. Up to date, the highest reported content of s-SWNTs as-grown is ∼97%, which is still far below the daunting requirements of high-end applications. Herein, we report a feasible and green pathway to use H2O vapor to modulate the structure of the intermetallic W6Co7nanocrystals. By using the resultant W6Co7nanocatalysts with a high percentage of (1 0 10) planes as structural templates, we realized the direct growth of s-SWNT with the purity of ∼99%, in which ∼97% is (14,4) tubes (diameter 1.29 nm). H2O can also act as an environmentally friendly and facile etchant for eliminating metallic SWNTs, and the content of s-SWNTs was further improved to 99.8% and (14,4) tubes to 98.6%. High purity s-SWNTs with even bandgap determined by their uniform structure can be used for the exquisite applications in different fields.

47. Synthesis of crystalline WS 3 with a layered structure and desert-rose-like morphology.

Abstract

Tungsten disulphide has attracted great research interest due to its layered structure as well as physical and chemical properties. A less common type of tungsten sulphide, WS 3 , has also been studied as an electrochemical catalyst, but its crystal structure remains unclear because it has only been prepared in the amorphous form. In this work, crystalline WS 3 is synthesized with a desert-rose-like morphology through the sulphurization of WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O in a solvothermal reaction. The composition of WS 3 is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements as well as thermogravimetric experiment. The crystalline WS 3 also has a layered structure and is likely to belong to the trigonal crystal system. Its lattice parameters in the hexagonal description are 5.30 Å × 5.30 Å × 29.0 Å <90 ° × 90 ° × 120°>, which are determined by 3D electron diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction. The WS 3 shows potential as catalyst for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction.
