Nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling is an important nonlinear phenomenon. We propose to stimulate the nonlinear tunneling in a spin-orbit-coupled spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. The system provides an experimentally tunable nonlinearity as well as multiple avoided crossings with tunable gap size in nonlinear dispersion relations. The nonlinearity generates tilted cusp and loop structures around the avoided crossings, and the physical consequence of these nonlinear structures is the nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling. The spin-momentum locking induced by the spin-orbit coupling leads to the time-resolved observation of the nonlinear tunneling by measuring atom populations., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

In atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, mean-field energy can support the existence of period-doubled density waves, which are similar to Bloch waves but have the double periodicity of the underlying lattice potentials. However, they are dynamically unstable. Here, we propose to use the spin-orbit coupling to stabilize the period-doubled density waves. We study Thouless pumping and arresting of gap solitons in a two-component Bose gas loaded into an optical superlattice. We show that, depending on the atomic interactions and chemical potentials, the two solitons can be simultaneously pumped or trapped, but we also identify regimes where one soliton is pumped and the other arrested. These behaviors can be understood by considering an effective model of the system based on a variational approach, which reveals that the soliton width is a suitable qualifier for the observed behaviours: solitons with a larger width get transported, while solitons with a smaller width get trapped. Since these width can be controlled by tuning interactions, it should be possible to observe all behaviours experimentally., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We study the impact of saturable nonlinearity on the presence and location of exceptional points in a non-Hermitian dimer system. The inclusion of the saturable nonlinearity leads to the emergence of multiple eigenvalues, exceeding the typical two found in the linear counterpart. To identify the exceptional points, we calculate the nonlinear eigenvalues both from a polynomial equation for the defined population imbalance and through a fully numerical method. Our results reveal that exceptional points can be precisely located by adjusting the non-equal saturable nonlinearities in the detuning space., Comment: 7 pages and 3 figures

One of brilliant achievements in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates is the discovery and observation of the supersolid stripe states. So far, all studied supersolid stripe states do not carry supercurrent. In this work, we reveal the existence of supercurrent-carrying supersolids in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. The supersolid family has a parabolic-like dispersion relation and carries supercurrent which is proportional to the quasimomentum. Energetic and dynamical instabilities can break supercurrent-carrying ability of this supersolid family. An insightful interpretation of the dynamical instability of supercurrent-carrying supersolids from the pure plane-wave phase is provided., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

In a trapped spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensate with miscible interactions, a two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling can introduce an unconventional spatial separation between the two components. We reveal the physical mechanism of such a spin-orbit-coupling-induced phase separation. Detailed features of the phase separation are identified in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. We further analyze differences of phase separation in Rashba and anisotropic spin-orbit-coupled Bose gases. We investigate families of soliton solutions in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate embedded in an optical lattice, which bifurcate from the nearly flat lowest band. Unlike the conventional gap solitons the obtained solutions have the shape well approximated by a Wannier function (or a few Wannier functions) of the underlying linear Hamiltonian with amplitudes varying along the family and with nearly constant widths. The Wannier solitons (WSs) sharing all symmetries of the system Hamiltonian are found to be stable. Such solutions allow for the construction of Wannier breathers, that can be viewed as nonlinearly coupled one-hump solitons. The breathers are well described by a few-mode model and manifest stable behavior either in an oscillatory regime with balanced average populations or in a self-trapping regime characterized by unbalanced atomic populations of the local potential minima (similarly to the conventional boson Josephson junction), with the frequencies controlled by the inter-atomic interactions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review A

Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in periodic potentials generate interesting physics on the instabilities of Bloch states. The lowest-energy Bloch states of BECs in pure nonlinear lattices are dynamically and Landau unstable, which breaks down BEC superfluidity. In this paper we propose to use an out-of-phase linear lattice to stabilize them. The stabilization mechanism is revealed by the averaged interaction. We further incorporate a constant interaction into BECs with mixed nonlinear and linear lattices, and reveal its effect on the instabilities of Bloch states in the lowest band., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRE

We propose a spin-orbit-coupled Floquet spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) which can be implemented by Floquet engineering of a quadratic Zeeman field. The Floquet spinor BEC has a Bessel-function-modulated Rabi frequency and a Floquet-induced spin-exchange interaction. The quantum phase diagram of the spin-orbit-coupled Floquet spinor BEC is investigated by considering antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic spin-spin interactions. In comparison with the usual spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 BEC, we find that a stripe phase for antiferromagnetic interactions can exist in a large quadratic Zeeman field regime, and a different stripe phase with an experimentally favorable contrast for ferromagnetic interactions is uncovered.

While usually the optical diffraction limit is setting a limit for the lengthscales on which a typical alkali Bose-Einstein condensate can be controlled, we show that in certain situations control via matter waves can achieve smaller resolutions. For this we consider a small number of impurity atoms which are trapped inside the density dip of a dark soliton state and show that any grey soliton can be obtained by just driving the impurity atoms. By controlling the driving force on the impurity, one can therefore fully control the position and velocity of the dark soliton, and also study controlled collisions between these non-linear objects., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

In a two-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, we demonstrate Rashba spin-orbit coupling can always introduce dynamical instability into specific zero-quasimomentum states in all parameter regimes. During the evolution of the zero-quasimomentum states, such spin-orbit-coupling-induced instability can fragment the states and lead to a dynamically patterning process. The features of formed patterns are identified from the symmetries of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. Supersolid is a special state of matter with both superfluid properties and spontaneous modulation of particle density. In this paper, we focus on the supersolid stripe phase realized in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate and explore the properties of a class of metastable supersolids. In particular, we study a one-dimensional supersolid whose characteristic wave number $k$ (magnitude of wave vector) deviates from $k_{m}$, i.e., the one at ground state. In other words, the period of density modulation is shorter or longer than the one at ground state. We find that this class of supersolids can still be stable if their wave numbers fall in the range $k_{c1}

Spin-1 spin-orbit-coupled spinor Bose-Einstein condensates have been realized in experiment. We study spin-orbit-coupled spinor gap solitons in this experimentally realizable system with an optical lattice. The spin-dependent parity symmetry of the spin-orbit coupling plays an important role in properties of gap solitons. Two families of solitons with opposite spin-dependent parity are found. Using an approximating model by replacing the optical lattice with a Harmonic trap, we demonstrate the physical origination of these two families. For a large negative quadratic Zeeman shift, we also find a type of gap solitons that spontaneously breaks the spin-dependent parity symmetry due to the ferromagnetic spinor interactions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review A

While a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate has been experimentally observed, its elementary excitations remain unclear in the stripe phase. Here, we systematically study the elementary excitations in three distinct phases of a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. We find that the excitation spectrum as well as the corresponding static response function and structure factor depend strongly on spin-orbit coupling parameters such as the quadratic Zeeman field and the Rabi frequency. In the stripe phase, besides two gapless Goldstone modes, we show the existence of roton excitations. Finally, we demonstrate that quantum phase transitions between these different phases including the zero-momentum, plane wave and stripe phases are characterized by the sound velocities and the quantum depletion.

We propose to detect phonon and roton excitations in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling by perturbing the atomic cloud with a weak barrier. The two excitation modes can be observed by moving the barrier along different directions in appropriate parameter regimes. Phonon excitations are identified by the appearance of solitary waves, while roton excitations lead to distinctive spatial density modulations. Optical lattice and spin-orbit coupling are typical experimental approaches to engineer dispersion. We reveal a self-interfering dynamics in a noninteracting Bose-Einstein condensate with the engineered dispersion by optical lattice or spin-orbit coupling. The self-interference results from the co-occupation of positive and negative effect mass regimes in the engineered dispersion. The physical origination of the self-interference is explained by the Wigner distribution function of the self-interfering wave-packet. Periodic band structures are a hallmark phenomenon of condensed matter physics. While often imposed by external potentials, periodicity can also arise through the interplay of couplings that are not necessarily spatially periodic on their own. Here, we investigate dynamics in a lattice structure that emerges from the simultaneous application of Raman and radio frequency coupling to a dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate. We demonstrate a variety of techniques including Kapitza-Dirac scattering, Bloch oscillations, and lattice shaking with spin and momentum resolved measurements. This combined coupling scheme allows for exceptional tunability and control, enabling future investigations into unconventional band structures such as quasi-flat ground bands and those with semimetal-like band gaps., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Spin-orbit coupling has novel spin-flip symmetries, a spin-1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate owns meaningful interactions, and a toroidal trap is topologically nontrivial. We incorporate the three together and study the ground-state phase diagram in a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with a toroidal trap. The spin-flip symmetries give rise to two different interesting phases: persistent flows with a unit phase winding difference between three components, and necklace states with even petal-number. A simple and efficient method to create gap solitons is proposed in a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. We find that a free expansion along the spin-orbit coupling dimension can generate two moving gap solitons, which are identified from a generalized massive Thirring model. We demarcate the unstable regimes of superfluids in a Rabi-coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of optical lattices.
