Neutrinophilic mediators are well-motivated messenger particles that can probe some of the least known sectors of fundamental physics involving nonstandard interactions of neutrinos with themselves and potentially with dark matter. In particular, light mediators coupling to the active neutrinos will induce new decay modes of the Standard Model mesons (e.g., $\pi^\pm, K^\pm \to \ell^\pm + \nu + \phi$), charged leptons (e.g., $\tau^\pm \to \pi^\pm + \nu + \phi$), and gauge bosons (e.g., $Z \to \nu + \bar{\nu} + \phi$). A common lore is that these decays suffer from infrared divergences in the limit of the vanishing mediator mass, i.e., $m_\phi \to 0$. Here, we show for the first time that including the 1-loop contributions of these mediators to the standard 2-body decays (e.g., $\pi^\pm,\,K^\pm \to \ell^\pm + \nu$, etc.), the infrared divergence from the 3-body decay cancels out exactly by virtue of the Kinoshita-Lee-Nauenberg theorem. Including these cancellation effects, we then update the existing laboratory constraints on neutrinophilic scalar mediators, thereby extending the limits far beyond the decaying parent particle mass and excluding a wider range of parameter space. We present the hidden-layer concatenated physics informed neural network (HLConcPINN) method, which combines hidden-layer concatenated feed-forward neural networks, a modified block time marching strategy, and a physics informed approach for approximating partial differential equations (PDEs). We analyze the convergence properties and establish the error bounds of this method for two types of PDEs: parabolic (exemplified by the heat and Burgers' equations) and hyperbolic (exemplified by the wave and nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations). We show that its approximation error of the solution can be effectively controlled by the training loss for dynamic simulations with long time horizons. The HLConcPINN method in principle allows an arbitrary number of hidden layers not smaller than two and any of the commonly-used smooth activation functions for the hidden layers beyond the first two, with theoretical guarantees. This generalizes several recent neural-network techniques, which have theoretical guarantees but are confined to two hidden layers in the network architecture and the $\tanh$ activation function. Our theoretical analyses subsequently inform the formulation of appropriate training loss functions for these PDEs, leading to physics informed neural network (PINN) type computational algorithms that differ from the standard PINN formulation. We propose a simple interpretation of the $\gamma\gamma$ excesses reported by both CMS and ATLAS groups at 95 GeV together with the LEP excess in the $Zb\bar{b}$ channel around the same mass in terms of a neutral scalar field in the minimal left-right symmetric model (LRSM). We point out that the scalar field which implements the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses has all the right properties to explain these observations, without introducing any extra scalar fields. The key point is that this scalar particle is hardly constrained because it couples only to heavy right-handed particles. As a result, the diphoton decay mode receives contributions from both mixing with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs and the heavy charged bosons in the LRSM, depending on the $SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry breaking scale $v_R$. We use multimessenger observations of the neutron star merger event GW170817 to derive new constraints on axion-like particles (ALPs) coupling to photons. ALPs are produced via Primakoff and photon coalescence processes in the merger, escape the remnant and decay back into two photons, giving rise to a photon signal approximately along the line-of-sight to the merger. We analyze the spectral and temporal information of the ALP-induced photon signal, and use the Fermi-LAT observations of GW170817 to derive our new ALP constraints. We consider the approximation of a class of dynamic partial differential equations (PDE) of second order in time by the physics-informed neural network (PINN) approach, and provide an error analysis of PINN for the wave equation, the Sine-Gordon equation and the linear elastodynamic equation. Our analyses show that, with feed-forward neural networks having two hidden layers and the $\tanh$ activation function, the PINN approximation errors for the solution field, its time derivative and its gradient field can be effectively bounded by the training loss and the number of training data points (quadrature points). Our analyses further suggest new forms for the training loss function, which contain certain residuals that are crucial to the error estimate but would be absent from the canonical PINN loss formulation. Adopting these new forms for the loss function leads to a variant PINN algorithm. We present ample numerical experiments with the new PINN algorithm for the wave equation, the Sine-Gordon equation and the linear elastodynamic equation, which show that the method can capture the solution well., Comment: 46 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables

Recent astrophysical transient Swift J1913.1+1946 may be associated with the $\gamma$-ray burst GRB 221009A. The redshift of this event is $z\simeq 0.151$. Very high-energy $\gamma$-rays (up to 18 TeV) followed the transient and were observed by LHAASO, additionally Carpet-2 detected a photon-like air shower of 251 TeV. Photons of such high energy are expected to readily annihilate with the diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL) before reaching Earth. If the $\gamma$-ray identification and redshift measurements are correct, new physics could be necessary to explain these measurements. This letter provides the first CP-even scalar explanation of the most energetic 18 TeV event reported by LHAASO. In this minimal scenario, the light scalar singlet $S$ mixes with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson $h$. The highly boosted $S$ particles are produced in the GRB and then undergo the radiative decay di-photon $S\rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ while propagating to Earth. The resulting photons may thus be produced at a remote region without being nullified by the EBL. Hence, the usual exponential reduction of $\gamma$-rays is lifted due to an attenuation that is inverse in the optical depth, which becomes much larger due to the scalar carriers., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

It was pointed out in a recent paper that the observed cooling rate of old, cold neutron stars (NS) can provide an upper limit on the transition rate of neutron to mirror neutron ($n-n'$). This limit is so stringent that it would preclude any discovery of $n \to n'$ oscillation in the current round of terrestrial searches for the process. Motivated by this crucially important conclusion, we critically analyze this suggestion and note an interesting new effect present in nearly exact mirror models for $n \to n'$ oscillation, which significantly affect this bound. The new element is the $\beta$ decay $n' \to p'+ e' +\bar{\nu}'_{e}$, which creates a cloud of mirror particles $n'$, $p'$, $e'$ and $D'$ inside the NS core. The $e'$ can "rob" the energy generated by the $n \to n'$ transition via $e-e'$ scattering enabled by the presence of a (minute) milli-charge in mirror particles. Charged lepton flavor violation is an unambiguous signature for New Physics. Here we present a summary of the theoretical and experimental status of the search for charged lepton flavor violation in heavy particle decays, in particular in the decays of the Z and Higgs bosons, and of the top quark. Decays of beyond-Standard-Model particles such as a Z' or an additional scalar particle are also discussed. We derive improved stellar luminosity limits on a generic light CP-even scalar field $S$ mixing with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson from the supernova SN1987A, the Sun, red giants (RGs) and white dwarfs (WDs). For the first time, we include the geometric effects for the decay and absorption of $S$ particles in the stellar interior. For SN1987A and the Sun, we also take into account the detailed stellar profiles. We find that a broad range of the scalar mass and mixing angle can be excluded by our updated astrophysical constraints. For instance, SN1987A excludes $1.0\times10^{-7} \lesssim \sin\theta \lesssim 3.0\times 10^{-5}$ and scalar mass up to 219 MeV, which covers the cosmological blind spot with a high reheating temperature. The updated solar limit excludes the mixing angle in the range of $1.5\times 10^{-12} < \sin\theta < 1$, with scalar mass up to 45 keV. The RG and WD limits are updated to $5.3\times 10^{-13} < \sin \theta < 0.39$ and $2.8\times 10^{-18} < \sin \theta < 1.8\times 10^{-4}$, with scalar mass up to 392 keV and 290 keV, respectively., Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, calculations updated, more references

We address a method of limiting neutron-mirror neutron mixing ($\epsilon_{nn'}$) by analyzing its effect on neutron star (NS) heating. This method employs observational bounds on the surface temperature of NSs to constrain $\epsilon_{nn'}$. It has been suggested that the bound obtained this way is so stringent that it would exclude any discovery of $n-n'$ oscillation in the currently planned terrestrial experiments at various laboratories. This conclusion motivated us to critically analyze this suggestion in more detail. In this note, we point out a very interesting new effect present in nearly exact mirror models, which can significantly affect this bound. The new element is that in nearly exact mirror models there is the mirror analog of $\beta$ decay, i.e. $n' \to p' + e' + \bar\nu'_e$, which creates a cloud of mirror particles $n'$, $p'$, $e'$, $D'$ and He$'$ inside the NS. The resulting $e'$ can "rob" the energy generated by the $n \to n'$ transition from the NS, via $e-e'$ scattering enabled by the presence of a (minute) millicharge in mirror particles. Such a tiny millicharge on mirror particles is highly likely in these models. This results in energy being emitted as unobserved mirror photons via fast mirror bremsstrahlung, whose effect is to relax the stringent bounds on $\epsilon_{nn'}$., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, more references, published in EPJC

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. Neutrinos are the Standard Model (SM) particles which we understand the least, often due to how weakly they interact with the other SM particles. Beyond this, very little is known about interactions among the neutrinos, i.e., their self-interactions. The SM predicts neutrino self-interactions at a level beyond any current experimental capabilities, leaving open the possibility for beyond-the-SM interactions across many energy scales. In this white paper, we review the current knowledge of neutrino self-interactions from a vast array of probes, from cosmology, to astrophysics, to the laboratory. We also discuss theoretical motivations for such self-interactions, including neutrino masses and possible connections to dark matter. We summarize the potential charged lepton flavor violation (LFV) from neutrino mass relevant models, for instance the seesaw mechanisms. In particular, we study, in a model-dependent way, the LFV signals at the high-energy hadron and lepton colliders originating from the beyond standard model (BSM) neutral scalar $H$, doubly charged scalar $H^{\pm\pm}$, heavy neutrino $N$, heavy $W_R$ boson, and the $Z'$ boson. For the neutral scalar, doubly charged scalar and $Z'$ boson, the LFV signals originate from the (effective) LFV couplings of these particles to the charged leptons, while for the heavy neutrino $N$ and $W_R$ boson, the LFV effects are from flavor mixing in the neutrino sector. In this work, by using the machine learning methods, we study the sensitivities of heavy pseudo-Dirac neutrino $N$ in the inverse seesaw at the high-energy hadron colliders. The production process for the signal is $pp \to \ell N \to 3 \ell + E_T^{\rm miss}$, while the dominant background is $p p \to W Z \to 3 \ell + E_T^{\rm miss}$. We use either the Multi-Layer Perceptron or the Boosted Decision Tree with Gradient Boosting to analyse the kinematic observables and optimize the discrimination of background and signal events. It is found that the reconstructed $Z$ boson mass and heavy neutrino mass from the charged leptons and missing transverse energy play crucial roles in separating the signal from backgrounds. The prospects of heavy-light neutrino mixing $|V_{\ell N}|^2$ (with $\ell = e,\,\mu$) are estimated by using machine learning at the hadron colliders with $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV, 27 TeV, and 100 TeV, and it is found that $|V_{\ell N}|^2$ can be improved up to ${\cal O} (10^{-6})$ for heavy neutrino mass $m_N = 100$ GeV and ${\cal O} (10^{-4})$ for $m_N = 1$ TeV., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables, more details and more references added, version published in JHEP

The P2 experiment aims at high-precision measurements of the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron-proton and electron-$^{12}$C scatterings with longitudinally polarized electrons. We discuss here the sensitivity of P2 to leptoquarks, which within the P2 energy range can be described in the language of Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We give the expected P2 limits on the SMEFT operators and on the leptoquark parameters, which will test energy scales up to 15 TeV. In many cases those limits exceed current constraints from LHC and atomic parity violation (APV) experiments. We also demonstrate that degeneracies of different SMEFT operators can partially be resolved by use of APV experiments and different targets (protons and $^{12}$C) at P2. Due to their unique set of multimessenger signals, neutron star mergers have emerged as a novel environment for studies of new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). As a case study, we consider the simplest extension of the SM scalar sector involving a light CP-even scalar singlet $S$ mixing with the SM Higgs boson. These $S$ particles can be produced abundantly in neutron star mergers via the nucleon bremsstrahlung process. We show that the $S$ particles may either be trapped in or stream freely out of the merger remnant, depending on the $S$ mass, its mixing with the SM Higgs boson, and the temperature and baryon density in the merger. In the free-streaming region, the scalar $S$ will provide an extra channel to cool down the merger remnant, with cooling timescales as small as ${\cal O}$(ms). On the other hand, in the trapped region, the Bose gas of $S$ particles could contribute a larger thermal conductivity than the trapped neutrinos in some parts of the parameter space, thus leading to faster thermal equilibration than expected. Therefore, future observations of the early postmerger phase of a neutron star merger could effectively probe a unique range of the $S$ parameter space, largely complementary to the existing and future laboratory and supernova limits. We study the non-standard interactions of neutrinos with light leptonic scalars ($\phi$) in a global $(B-L)$-conserved ultraviolet (UV)-complete model. The model utilizes Type-II seesaw motivated neutrino interactions with an $SU(2)_L$-triplet scalar, along with an additional singlet in the scalar sector. This UV-completion leads to an enriched spectrum and consequently new observable signatures. We examine the low-energy lepton flavor violation constraints, as well as the perturbativity and unitarity constraints on the model parameters. Then we lay out a search strategy for the unique signature of the model resulting from the leptonic scalars at the hadron colliders via the processes $H^{\pm\pm} \to W^\pm W^\pm \phi$ and $H^\pm \to W^\pm \phi$ for both small and large leptonic Yukawa coupling cases. We find that via these associated production processes at the HL-LHC, the prospects of doubly-charged scalar $H^{\pm\pm}$ can reach up to 800 (500) GeV and 1.1 (0.8) TeV at the $2\sigma \ (5\sigma)$ significance for small and large Yukawa couplings, respectively. A future 100 TeV hadron collider will further increase the mass reaches up to 3.8 (2.6) TeV and 4 (2.7) TeV, at the $2\sigma \ (5\sigma)$ significance, respectively. We point out that light gauge boson mediators could induce new interference effects in neutrino-electron scattering that can be used to enhance the sensitivity of neutrino-flavor-selective high-intensity neutrino experiments, such as DUNE. We particularly emphasize a destructive interference effect, leading to a deficit between the Standard Model expectation and the experimental measurement of the differential cross-sections, which is prominent only in either the neutrino or the antineutrino mode, depending on the mediator couplings. The low-energy $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry is well-motivated as part of beyond Standard Model physics related to neutrino mass generation. We show that a light $B-L$ gauge boson $Z{'}$ and the associated $U(1)_{B-L}$-breaking scalar $\varphi$ can both be effectively searched for at high-intensity facilities such as the near detector complex of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). Without the scalar $\varphi$, the $Z{'}$ can be probed at DUNE up to mass of 1 GeV, with the corresponding gauge coupling $g_{BL}$ as low as $10^{-9}$. In the presence of the scalar $\varphi$ with gauge coupling to $Z{'}$, the DUNE capability of discovering the gauge boson $Z{'}$ can be significantly improved, even by one order of magnitude in $g_{BL}$, due to additional production from the decay $\varphi \to Z{'}Z{'}$. The DUNE sensitivity is largely complementary to other long-lived $Z{'}$ searches at beam-dump facilities such as FASER and SHiP, as well as astrophysical and cosmological probes.
