Strain-free GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) grown by droplet etching and nanohole infilling (DENI) are highly promising candidates for the on-demand generation of indistinguishable and entangled photon sources. The spectroscopic fingerprint and quantum optical properties of QDs are significantly influenced by their morphology. The effects of nanohole geometry and infilled material on the exciton binding energies and fine structure splitting are well understood. However, a comprehensive understanding of GaAs/AlGaAs QD morphology remains elusive. To address this, we employ high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and reverse engineering through selective chemical etching and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Cross-sectional STEM of uncapped QDs reveals an inverted conical nanohole with Al-rich sidewalls and defect-free interfaces. Subsequent selective chemical etching and AFM measurements further reveal asymmetries in element distribution. This study enhances the understanding of DENI QD morphology and provides a fundamental three-dimensional structural model for simulating and optimizing their optoelectronic properties.

Large-scale quantum networks require the implementation of long-lived quantum memories as stationary nodes interacting with qubits of light. Epitaxially grown quantum dots hold great potential for the on-demand generation of single and entangled photons with high purity and indistinguishability. Coupling these emitters to memories with long coherence times enables the development of hybrid nanophotonic devices incorporating the advantages of both systems. Here we report the first GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots grown by droplet etching and nanohole infilling method, emitting single photons with a narrow wavelength distribution (736.2 $\pm$ 1.7 nm) close to the zero-phonon line of Silicon-vacancy centers. Polarization entangled photons are generated via the biexciton-exciton cascade with a fidelity of (0.73 $\pm$ 0.09). High single photon purity is maintained from 4 K (g$^($$^2$$^)$(0) = 0.07 $\pm$ 0.02) up to 80 K (g$^($$^2$$^)$(0) = 0.11 $\pm$ 0.01), therefore making this hybrid system technologically attractive for real-world quantum photonic applications.

The simulation of open quantum dynamics on quantum circuits has attracted wide interests recently with a variety of quantum algorithms developed and demonstrated. Among these, one particular design of a unitary-dilation-based quantum algorithm is capable of simulating general and complex physical systems. In this paper, we apply this quantum algorithm to simulating the dynamics of the radical pair mechanism in the avian compass. This application is demonstrated on the IBM QASM quantum simulator. This work is the first application of any quantum algorithm to simulating the radical pair mechanism in the avian compass, which not only demonstrates the generality of the quantum algorithm, but also opens new opportunities for studying the avian compass with quantum computing devices., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The surface of semiconductor nanostructures has a major impact on their electronic and optical properties. Disorder and defects in the surface layer typically cause degradation of charge carrier transport and radiative recombination dynamics. However, surface vicinity is inevitable for many scalable nano-optical applications. Epitaxially grown quantum dots are the best candidate for high-performance single photon emission and show great potential for quantum technologies. Yet, these emitters only reveal their excellent properties if they are deeply embedded in a semiconductor host. Until today, quantum dots close to surfaces yield weak, broad, and unstable emissions. Here, we show the complete restoration of optical properties from quantum dots grown directly on a semiconductor surface. The vanishing luminescence from the as-grown sample turns into bright, ultra-stable, coherent and blinking-free single photon emission after sulphur passivation. Under quasi-resonant excitation, single photons are generated with 98.8% purity, 77% indistinguishability, linewidths down to 4 $\mu$eV and 99.69% persistency across 11 orders of magnitude in time. The emission is stable even after two years and when being subjected to nanomanufacturing processes. Some long-standing stumbling blocks for surface-dominated quantum dots are thereby removed, unveiling new possibilities for hybrid nano-devices and applications in quantum communication or sensing., Comment: New experiments show that the results have to be re-interpreted, most likely leading to a new manuscript

We review the spin radical pair mechanism which is a promising explanation of avian navigation. This mechanism is based on the dependence of product yields on (1) the hyperfine interaction involving electron spins and neighboring nuclear spins and (2) the intensity and orientation of the geomagnetic field. One surprising result is that even at ambient conditions quantum entanglement of electron spins can play an important role in avian magnetoreception. This review describes the general scheme of chemical reactions involving radical pairs generated from singlet and triplet precursors; the spin dynamics of the radical pairs; and the magnetic field dependence of product yields caused by the radical pair mechanism. The main part of the review includes a description of the chemical compass in birds. We review: the general properties of the avian compass; the basic scheme of the radical pair mechanism; the reaction kinetics in cryptochrome; quantum coherence and entanglement in the avian compass; and the effects of noise. We believe that the "quantum avian compass" can play an important role in avian navigation and can also provide the foundation for a new generation of sensitive and selective magnetic-sensing nano-devices., Comment: submitted to the special issue, "Quantum Information in Chemistry"--International Journal of Quantum Chemistry

The high quantum efficiency of photosynthetic complexes has inspired researchers to explore new routes to utilize this process for photovoltaic devices. Quantum coherence has been demonstrated to play a crucial role within this process. Herein, we propose a three-dipole system as a model of a new photocell type which exploits the coherence among its three dipoles. We have proved that the efficiency of such a photocell is greatly enhanced by quantum coherence. We have also predicted that the photocurrents can be enhanced by about 49.5 % in such a coherent coupled dipole system compared with the uncoupled dipoles. The Radical Pair Mechanism can help to explain avian orientation and navigation. Some evidence indicates that the intensity of external magnetic fields plays an important role in avian navigation. In this paper, based on a two-stage strategy, we demonstrate that birds could reasonably detect the directions of geomagnetic fields and gradients of these fields using a yield-based chemical compass that is sensitive enough for navigation. Also, we find that the lifetime of entanglement in this proposed compass is angle-dependent and long enough to allow adequate electron transfer between molecules., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

The radical pair mechanism is one of two distinct mechanisms used to explain the navigation of birds in geomagnetic fields. However, little research has been done to explore the role of quantum entanglement in this mechanism. In this paper, we study the lifetime of radical pair entanglement corresponding to the magnitude and direction of magnetic fields to show that the entanglement lasts long enough in birds to be used for navigation. We also demonstrate that, due to a lack of orientational sensitivity of the entanglement in the geomagnetic field, the birds are not able to orient themselves by the mechanism based directly on radical-pair entanglement. To explore the entanglement mechanism further, we propose a model in which the hyperfine interactions are replaced by local magnetic fields of similar strength. The entanglement of the radical pair in this model lasts longer and displays an angular sensitivity in weak magnetic fields, both of these factors are not present in the previous models., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures
