Search

Precise predictions for nuclei near drip lines are crucial for experiments in new generation of rare isotope facilities. A multi-models investigation of the $Q_g$ systematics for fragments production cross sections, with $Q_g$ defined as the difference of mass excess (ME) between the projectile ($Z_{p}, A_{p}$) and the fragment ($Z_{f}, A_{f}$) nuclei $Q_{g}=ME(Z_{p}, A_{p})-ME(Z_{f}, A_{f})$, has been performed to verify the model prediction abilities for light neutron-rich isotopes in measured $^{40}$Ar + $^9$Be projectile fragmentation reactions from 57$A$ MeV to 1$A$ GeV. The models used are the FRACS parametrizations and the newly developed Bayesian neural networks (BNN) model. %method The results show that FRACS, BNN, and $Q_g$ extrapolations are generally consistent, except for fragments near the nuclear mass of the projectile. Additionally, both measured data and model extrapolations provide evidence for a shell closure at $N=$ 16 in fluorine and neon, as well as the disappearance of the traditional magic number $N=$ 20 in neon, sodium and magnesium.

Charge-changing cross-sections of $^{11-16}$C, $^{13-17}$N and $^{15-18}$O on a carbon target have been determined at energies around 300 MeV/nucleon. A nucleon separation energy-dependent correction factor has been introduced to the Glauber model calculation for extracting the nuclear charge radii from the experimental CCCSs. The charge radii of $^{11}$C, $^{13,16}$N and $^{15}$O thus were determined for the first time. With the new radii, we studied the experimental mirror-difference charge radii ($\Delta R_{\text {ch}}^{\text {mirror}}$) of $^{11}$B-$^{11}$C, $^{13}$C-$^{13}$N, $^{15}$N-$^{15}$O, $^{17}$N-$^{17}$Ne pairs for the first time. We find that the $\Delta R_{\text {ch}}^{\text {mirror}}$ values of $^{13}$C-$^{13}$N and $^{15}$N-$^{15}$O pairs follow well the empirical relation to the isospin asymmetry predicted by the $ab$ $initio$ calculations, while $\Delta R_{\text {ch}}^{\text {mirror}}$ of $^{11}$B-$^{11}$C and $^{17}$N-$^{17}$Ne pairs deviate from such relation by more than two standard deviations., Comment: 3 figures, submitted to Physics Letters B

We present the charge-changing cross sections (CCCS) of $^{11-15}$C, $^{13-17}$N, and $^{15,17-18}$O at around 300 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target, which extends to $p$-shell isotopes with $N < Z$ for the first time. The Glauber model, which considers only the proton distribution of projectile nuclei, underestimates the cross sections by more than 10\%. We show that this discrepancy can be resolved by considering the contribution from the charged-particle evaporation process (CPEP) following projectile neutron removal. Using nucleon densities from the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, we investigate the isospin-dependent CPEP contribution to the CCCS for a wide range of neutron-to-proton separation energy asymmetry. Our calculations, which include the CPEP contribution, agree well with existing systematic data and reveal an ``evaporation peak" at the isospin symmetric region where the neutron-to-proton separation energy is close to zero. These results suggest that analysis beyond the Glauber model is crucial for accurately determining nuclear charge radii from CCCSs., Comment: 5 figures

We present an observational study of the luminous red nova (LRN) AT\,2021biy in the nearby galaxy NGC\,4631. The field of the object was routinely imaged during the pre-eruptive stage by synoptic surveys, but the transient was detected only at a few epochs from $\sim 231$\,days before maximum brightness. The LRN outburst was monitored with unprecedented cadence both photometrically and spectroscopically. AT\,2021biy shows a short-duration blue peak, with a bolometric luminosity of $\sim 1.6 \times 10^{41}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$, followed by the longest plateau among LRNe to date, with a duration of 210\,days. A late-time hump in the light curve was also observed, possibly produced by a shell-shell collision. AT\,2021biy exhibits the typical spectral evolution of LRNe. Early-time spectra are characterised by a blue continuum and prominent H emission lines. Then, the continuum becomes redder, resembling that of a K-type star with a forest of metal absorption lines during the plateau phase. Finally, late-time spectra show a very red continuum ($T_{\mathrm{BB}} \approx 2050$ K) with molecular features (e.g., TiO) resembling those of M-type stars. Spectropolarimetric analysis indicates that AT\,2021biy has local dust properties similar to those of V838\,Mon in the Milky Way Galaxy. Inspection of archival {\it Hubble Space Telescope} data taken on 2003 August 3 reveals a $\sim 20$\,\msun\ progenitor candidate with log\,$(L/{\rm L}_{\odot}) = 5.0$\,dex and $T_{\rm{eff}} = 5900$\,K at solar metallicity. The above luminosity and colour match those of a luminous yellow supergiant. Most likely, this source is a close binary, with a 17--24\,\msun\ primary component., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures. Compact torus injection is considered as a high promising approach to realize central fueling in the future tokamak device. Recently, a compact torus injection system has been developed for the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, and the preliminary results have been carried out. In the typical discharges of the early stage, the velocity, electron density and particles number of the CT can reach 56.0 km/s, 8.73*10^20 m^(-3) and 2.4*10^18 (for helium), respectively. A continuous increase in CT density during acceleration was observed in the experiment, which may be due to the plasma ionized in the formation region may carry part of the neutral gas into the acceleration region, and these neutral gases will be ionized again. In addition, a significant plasma rotation is observed during the formation process which is introduced by the E*B drift. In this paper, we present the detailed system setup and the preliminary platform test results, hoping to provide some basis for the exploration of the CT technique medium-sized superconducting tokamak device in the future

GRANDMA is an international project that coordinates telescope observations of transient sources with large localization uncertainties. Such sources include gravitational wave events, gamma-ray bursts and neutrino events. GRANDMA currently coordinates 25 telescopes (70 scientists), with the aim of optimizing the imaging strategy to maximize the probability of identifying an optical counterpart of a transient source. SN 2018hti is a Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN~I) with an absolute $g$-band magnitude of $-22.2$ at maximum brightness, discovered in a metal-poor galaxy at a redshift of 0.0612. We present extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of this supernova, covering the phases from $\sim -35$ days to more than +340 days from the $r$-band maximum. Combining our $BVgri$-band photometry with {\it Swift} UVOT optical/ultraviolet photometry, we calculated the peak luminosity as $\sim 3.5\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Modeling the observed light curve reveals that the luminosity evolution of SN 2018hti can be produced by an ejecta mass of 5.8 $M_\odot$ and a magnetar with a magnetic field of $B=1.8\times10^{13}$~G having an initial spin period of $P_0=1.8$ ms. Based on such a magnetar-powered scenario and a larger sample, a correlation between the spin of the magnetar and the kinetic energy of the ejecta can be inferred for most SLSNe~I, suggesting a self-consistent scenario. Like for other SLSNe~I, the host galaxy of SN 2018hti is found to be relatively faint ($M_{g} = -17.75$ mag) and of low metallicity ($Z=0.3~Z_\odot$), with a star-formation rate of 0.3 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. According to simulation results of single-star evolution, SN 2018hti could originate from a massive, metal-poor star with a zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) mass of 25--40 $M_\odot$, or from a less massive rotating star with $M_\mathrm{ZAMS} \approx 16$--25 $M_\odot$. GRANDMA is a network of 25 telescopes of different sizes, including both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. The network aims to coordinate follow-up observations of gravitational-wave candidate alerts, especially those with large localisation uncertainties, to reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. In this paper, we detail GRANDMA's observational performance during Advanced LIGO/Advanced Virgo Observing Run 3 (O3), focusing on the second part of O3; this includes summary statistics pertaining to coverage and possible astrophysical origin of the candidates. To do so, we quantify our observation efficiency in terms of delay between gravitational-wave candidate trigger time, observations, and the total coverage. Using an optimised and robust coordination system, GRANDMA followed-up about 90 % of the gravitational-wave candidate alerts, i.e. 49 out of 56 candidates. This led to coverage of over 9000 deg2 during O3. The delay between the gravitational-wave candidate trigger and the first observation was below 1.5 hour for 50 % of the alerts. We did not detect any electromagnetic counterparts to the gravitational-wave candidates during O3, likely due to the very large localisation areas (on average thousands of degrees squares) and relatively large distance of the candidates (above 200 Mpc for 60 % of BNS candidates). We derive constraints on potential kilonova properties for two potential binary neutron star coalescences (GW190425 and S200213t), assuming that the events' locations were imaged., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures

We present the Global Rapid Advanced Network Devoted to the Multi-messenger Addicts (GRANDMA). The network consists of 21 telescopes with both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. They are connected together thanks to a dedicated infrastructure. The network aims at coordinating the observations of large sky position estimates of transient events to enhance their follow-up and reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. The GRANDMA program mainly focuses on follow-up of gravitational-wave alerts to find and characterise the electromagnetic counterpart during the third observational campaign of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. But it allows for any follow-up of transient alerts involving neutrinos or gamma-ray bursts, even with poor spatial localisation. We present the different facilities, tools, and methods we developed for this network, and show its efficiency using observations of LIGO/Virgo S190425z, a binary neutron star merger candidate. We furthermore report on all GRANDMA follow-up observations performed during the first six months of the LIGO-Virgo observational campaign, and we derive constraints on the kilonova properties assuming that the events' locations were imaged by our telescopes., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

The Frobenius-Perron theory of an endofunctor of a $\Bbbk$-linear category (recently introduced in [CG]) provides new invariants for abelian and triangulated categories. Here we study Frobenius-Perron type invariants for derived categories of commutative and noncommutative projective schemes. In particular, we calculate the Frobenius-Perron dimension for domestic and tubular weighted projective lines, define Frobenius-Perron generalizations of Calabi-Yau and Kodaira dimensions, and provide examples. We apply this theory to the derived categories associated to certain Artin-Schelter regular and finite-dimensional algebras., Comment: 31 pages

Structural phase transitions serve as the basis for many functional applications including shape memory alloys (SMAs), switches based on metal-insulator transitions (MITs), etc. In such materials, lattice incompatibility between phases often results in a thermal hysteresis, which is intimately tied to degradation of reversibility of the transformation. The non-linear theory of martensite suggests that the hysteresis of a martensitic phase transformation is solely determined by the lattice constants, and the conditions proposed for geometrical compatibility have been successfully applied to minimizing the hysteresis in SMAs. In this work, we apply the non-linear theory to a strongly correlated oxide system (W doped VO2), and show that the hysteresis of the MIT in the system can be directly tuned by adjusting the lattice constants of the phases. The results underscore the profound influence structural compatibility has on intrinsic electronic properties, and indicate that the theory provides a universal guidance for optimizing phase transforming materials., Comment: 5 figures plus supplementary materials

By analyzing large quantities of discharges in the unfavorable ion $ \vec B\times \nabla B $ drift direction, the I-mode operation has been confirmed in EAST tokamak. During the L-mode to I-mode transition, the energy confinement has a prominent improvement by the formation of a high-temperature edge pedestal, while the particle confinement remains almost identical to that in the L-mode. Similar with the I-mode observation on other devices, the $ E_r $ profiles obtained by the eight-channel Doppler backscattering system (DBS8)\cite{J.Q.Hu} show a deeper edge $ E_r $ well in the I-mode than that in the L-mode. And a weak coherent mode (WCM) with the frequency range of 40-150 kHz is observed at the edge plasma with the radial extend of about 2-3 cm. WCM could be observed in both density fluctuation and radial electric field fluctuation, and the bicoherence analyses showed significant couplings between WCM and high frequency turbulence, implying that the $ E_r $ fluctuation and the caused flow shear from WCM should play an important role during I-mode. In addition, a low-frequency oscillation with a frequency range of 5-10 kHz is always accompanied with WCM, where GAM intensity is decreased or disappeared. Many evidences show that the a low-frequency oscillation may be a novel kind of limited cycle oscillation but further investigations are needed to explain the new properties such as the harmonics and obvious magnetical perturbations., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

In typical nuclear physics experiments with radioactive ion beams (RIBs) selected by the in-flight separation technique, Si detectors or ionization chambers are usually equipped for the charge determination of RIBs. The obtained charge resolution relies on the performance of these detectors for energy loss determination, and this affects the particle identification capability of RIBs. We present an approach on improving the resolution of charge measurement for heavy ions by using the abundant energy loss information from different types of existing detectors along the beam line. Without altering the beam line and detectors, this approach can improve the charge resolution by more than 12\% relative to the multiple sampling ionization chamber of the best resolution., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) is a powerful technique developed in heavy-ion storage rings for measuring masses of very short-lived exotic nuclei. The IMS is based on the isochronous setting of the ring. One of the main parameters of this setting is the transition energy $\gamma_{t}$. %The transition energy $\gamma_{t}$ plays an important role in the isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS). It has been a challenge to determine the $\gamma_{t}$ and especially to monitor the variation of $\gamma_{t}$ during experiments. In this paper we introduce a method to measure the $\gamma_{t}$ online during IMS experiments by using the acquired experimental data. Furthermore, since the storage ring has (in our context) a relatively large momentum acceptance, the variation of the $\gamma_{t}$ across the ring acceptance is a source of systematic uncertainty of measured masses. With the installation of two time-of-flight (TOF) detectors, the velocity of each stored ion and its revolution time are simultaneously available for the analysis. These quantities enabled us to determine the $\gamma_{t}$ as a function of orbital length in the ring. The presented method is especially important for future IMS experiments planned at the new-generation storage ring facilities FAIR in Germany and HIAF in China., Comment: 7 pages

Electric-field (E-field) control of magnetism enabled by multiferroics has the potential to revolutionize the landscape of present memory devices plagued with high energy dissipation. To date, this E-field controlled multiferroic scheme at room temperature has only been demonstrated using BiFeO3 (BFO) films grown on DyScO3 (refs 1 and 2), a unique and expensive substrate, which gives rise to a particular ferroelectric domain pattern in BFO. Here, we demonstrate reversible E-field-induced switching of the magnetic state of the Co layer in Co/BFO (001) thin film heterostructures fabricated on SrTiO3 substrates. The angular dependence of the coercivity and the remanent magnetization of the Co layer indicates that its easy axis reversibly switches by 45{\deg} back and forth between the (100) and the (110) crystallographic directions of SrTiO3 as a result of alternating application of positive and negative voltage pulses on BFO. The coercivity of the Co layer exhibits a hysteretic behavior between two states as a function of voltage. To explain the observation, we have also measured the exact canting angle of the antiferromagnetic G-type domain in BFO films for the first time using neutron diffraction. These results suggest a pathway to integrating BFO-based devices on Si wafers for implementing low power consumption and non-volatile magnetoelectronic devices.

A prototype of a new CsI(Tl) telescope, which will be used in the reaction studies of light isotopes with energy of several hundred AMeV, has been constructed and tested at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The telescope has a multi-layer structure and the range information will be obtained to improve the particle identification performance. This prototype has seven layers of different thickness. A 5.0% (FWHM) energy resolution has been extracted for one of the layers in a beam test experiment. Obvious improvement for the identification of $^{14}$O and $^{15}$O isotopes was achieved by using the range information.

The superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of multilayers of electron-doped cuprates, composed of underdoped (or undoped) and overdoped La% $_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LCCO) and Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PCCO) thin films, is found to increase significantly with respect to the $T_{c}$ of the corresponding single-phase films. By investigating the critical current density of superlattices with different doping levels and layer thicknesses, we find that the $T_{c}$ enhancement is caused by a redistribution of charge over an anomalously large distance., Comment: 4 figures. Temperature and carrier density dependent spin dynamics for GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells (QWs) with different structural symmetry has been studied by using time-resolved Kerr rotation technique. The spin relaxation time is measured to be much longer for the symmetrically-designed GaAs quantum well comparing with the asymmetrical one, indicating the strong influence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling on spin relaxation. D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) mechanism has been revealed to be the dominant contribution for spin relaxation in GaAs/AlGaAs QWs. The spin relaxation time exhibits non-monotonic dependent behavior on both temperature and photo-excited carrier density, revealing the important role of non-monotonic temperature and density dependence of electron-electron Coulomb scattering. Our experimental observations demonstrate good agreement with recently developed spin relaxation theory based on microscopic kinetic spin Bloch equation approach., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Properties of proton resonances in $^{18}$Ne have been investigated efficiently by utilizing a technique of proton resonant elastic scattering with a $^{17}$F radioactive ion (RI) beam and a thick proton target. A 4.22~MeV/nucleon $^{17}$F RI beam was produced via a projectile-fragmentation reaction, and subsequently separated by a Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou ({\tt RIBLL}). Energy spectra of the recoiled protons were measured by two sets of $\Delta$E-E silicon telescope at center-of-mass scattering angles of $\theta_{c.m.}$$\approx$175${^\circ}$$\pm$5${^\circ}$, $\theta_{c.m.}$$\approx$152${^\circ}$$\pm$8${^\circ}$, respectively. Several proton resonances in $^{18}$Ne were observed, and their resonant parameters have been determined by an $R$-matrix analysis of the differential cross sections in combination with the previous results. The resonant parameters are related to the reaction-rate calculation of the stellar $^{14}$O($\alpha$,$p$)$^{17}$F reaction, which was thought to be the breakout reaction from the hot CNO cycles into the $rp$-process in x-ray bursters. Here, $J^\pi$=(3$^-$, 2$^-$) are tentatively assigned to the 6.15-MeV state which was thought the key 1$^-$ state previously. In addition, a doublet structure at 7.05 MeV are tentatively identified, and its contribution to the resonant reaction rate of $^{14}$O($\alpha$,$p$)$^{17}$F could be enhanced by at least factors of about 4$\sim$6 in comparison with the previous estimation involving only a singlet. The present calculated resonant rates are much larger than those previous values, and it may imply that this breakout reaction could play a crucial role under x-ray bursters conditions., Comment: 8 figures, 2 tables

Measurements of the Hall effect, thermoelectric power, magnetic susceptibility and upper and lower critical fields were performed on single crystals of SrFe(2-x)Ni(x)As2, an FeAs-based superconducting system that exhibits a reduced superconducting transition temperature Tc in comparison to most other iron-pnictide superconductors. Studies of the Hall and thermoelectric responses indicate that Ni substitution in this system results in a dominant electron-like response, consistent with electron doping in other similar systems but with a weaker change in the Hall coefficient and a more gradual change in the thermoelectric response with Ni concentration. For optimally doped samples with full superconducting volume fraction, the lower and upper critical fields were determined to be Hc1(1.8 K)= 0.08T and Hc2(0)= 25T, respectively, with lower-Tc samples showing reduced values and indications of inhomogeneous superconductivity. Comparable to other higher-Tc FeAs-based materials, the temperature dependence of the upper critical field, dHc2/dT, is linear over a wide temperature range, and the large values of Hc2(0) greatly exceed conventional estimates of paramagnetic and orbital limits., Comment: 9 pgs, 10 figs, slightly revised, updated references

After reviewing the problematic behavior of some previously suggested finite interval spatial operators of the symmetric Riesz type, we create a wish list leading toward a new spatial operator suitable to use in the space-time fractional differential equation of anomalous diffusion when the transport of material is strictly restricted to a bounded domain. Based on recent studies of wall effects, we introduce a new definition of the spatial operator and illustrate its favorable characteristics. We provide two numerical methods to solve the modified space-time fractional differential equation and show particular results illustrating compliance to our established list of requirements, most important to the conservation principle and the second law of thermodynamics., Comment: 14 figures

We investigated the in-plane angular magnetoresistivity (AMR) of $% T^{^{\prime}}$-phase La$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LCCO) thin films ($% x=0.06-0.15$) fabricated by a pulsed laser deposition technique. The in-plane AMR with $\mathbf{H}\parallel ab$ shows a twofold symmetry instead of the fourfold behavior found in other electron-doped cuprates such as Pr$% _{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. The twofold AMR disappears above a certain temperature, $T_{D}$. The $T_{D}(x)$ is well above $T_{c}(x)$ for $x=0.06$ ($\sim 110$ K), and decreases with increasing doping, until it is no longer observed above $T_{c}(x)$ at $x=0.15$. This twofold AMR below $T_{D}(x)$ is suggested to originate from an antiferromagnetic or spin density wave order., Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev. B, Vol. 80 (2009)

We discovered in simulations of sliding coaxial nanotubes an unanticipated example of dynamical symmetry breaking taking place at the nanoscale. While both nanotubes are perfectly left-right symmetric and nonchiral, a nonzero angular momentum of phonon origin appears spontaneously at a series of critical sliding velocities, in correspondence with large peaks of the sliding friction. The non-linear equations governing this phenomenon resemble the rotational instability of a forced string. By using a newly fitted multi-parameter potential to describe the van der Waals interaction between carbon and molecular hydrogen, we study the hydrogen storage inside carbon nanotubes (CNT's) under pressure in gigapascal range. Comparing with the results of graphite, we find that the shape change of the nanotubes (the curvature effect) provides a different storage mechanism for hydrogen. The negative free energy change for hydrogen storage inside CNT's makes it possible to use CNT's as the nanocontainer [Carbon 45, 315 (2007)]., Comment: 6 pages. We report the ultrafast and large third-order nonlinear optical properties of CdS nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in a polymeric film. The CdS NCs of 2-nm radius are synthesized by an ion exchange method and highly concentrated in the two layers near the surfaces of the polymeric film. The two-photon absorption coefficient and the optical Kerr coefficient are measured with laser pulses of 250-fs duration at 800-nm wavelength. The one-photon and two-photon figures of merit are determined to be 3.1 and 1.3, respectively, at irradiance of 2 GW/cm2. The observed nonlinearities have a recovery time of ~ 1 ps. The two-photon-generated free carrier effects have also been observed and discussed. These results demonstrate that CdS NCs embedded in polymeric film are a promising candidate for optical switching applications., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures
