1. Real-Time Asphalt Pavement Layer Thickness Prediction Using Ground-Penetrating Radar Based on a Modified Extended Common Mid-Point (XCMP) Approach

Abstract

The conventional surface reflection method has been widely used to measure the asphalt pavement layer dielectric constant using ground-penetrating radar (GPR). This method may be inaccurate for in-service pavement thickness estimation with dielectric constant variation through the depth, which could be addressed using the extended common mid-point method (XCMP) with air-coupled GPR antennas. However, the factors affecting the XCMP method on thickness prediction accuracy haven't been studied. Manual acquisition of key factors is required, which hinders its real-time applications. This study investigates the affecting factors and develops a modified XCMP method to allow automatic thickness prediction of in-service asphalt pavement with non-uniform dielectric properties through depth. A sensitivity analysis was performed, necessitating the accurate estimation of time of flights (TOFs) from antenna pairs. A modified XCMP method based on edge detection was proposed to allow real-time TOFs estimation, then dielectric constant and thickness predictions. Field tests using a multi-channel GPR system were performed for validation. Both the surface reflection and XCMP setups were conducted. Results show that the modified XCMP method is recommended with a mean prediction error of 1.86%, which is more accurate than the surface reflection method (5.73%)., Comment: IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (2024)

4. Polar-Doc: One-Stage Document Dewarping with Multi-Scope Constraints under Polar Representation

Abstract

Document dewarping, aiming to eliminate geometric deformation in photographed documents to benefit text recognition, has made great progress in recent years but is still far from being solved. While Cartesian coordinates are typically leveraged by state-of-the-art approaches to learn a group of deformation control points, such representation is not efficient for dewarping model to learn the deformation information. In this work, we explore Polar coordinates representation for each point in document dewarping, namely Polar-Doc. In contrast to most current works adopting a two-stage pipeline typically, Polar representation enables a unified point regression framework for both segmentation and dewarping network in one single stage. Such unification makes the whole model more efficient to learn under an end-to-end optimization pipeline, and also obtains a compact representation. Furthermore, we propose a novel multi-scope Polar-Doc-IOU loss to constrain the relationship among control points as a grid-based regularization under the Polar representation. Visual comparisons and quantitative experiments on two benchmarks show that, with much fewer parameters than the other mainstream counterparts, our one-stage model with multi-scope constraints achieves new state-of-the-art performance on both pixel alignment metrics and OCR metrics. 5. An in-silico study of travel time estimation using Eikonal equation with finite element method in ultrasound imaging

Abstract

Estimating the travel time of ultrasound in an inhomogeneous medium is crucial for high-quality imaging, as with an accurate estimate of the distribution of speed of sound, phase aberration, which is normally viewed as one of the reasons for image degradation, can be corrected by multiple methods. In order to estimate the ultrasound travel time in an inhomogeneous medium, the approach using solutions to the eikonal equation is attractive, since it can be easily integrated into a conventional delay-and-sum beamformer. In our manuscript, we first propose employing the finite element method to solve the eikonal equation in ultrasound imaging, which is easy to extend to a high-order numerical scheme and potentially runs faster on GPU. Through a series of in-silicon experiments, our results are comparable to those of fast marching methods.

Abstract

Despite significant progress on the design and synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), precise control over microstructures of such materials remains challenging. Herein, two chiral COFs with well-defined one-handed double-helical nanofibrous morphologies were constructed via an unprecedented template-free method, capitalizing on the diastereoselective formation of aminal linkages. Detailed time-dependent experiments reveal the spontaneous transformation of initial rod-like aggregates into the double-helical microstructures. We have further demonstrated that the helical chirality and circular dichroism signal can be facilely inversed by simply adjusting the amount of acetic acid during synthesis. Moreover, by transferring chirality to achiral fluorescent molecular adsorbents, the helical COF nanostructures can effectively induce circularly polarized luminescence with the highest luminescent asymmetric factor (glum ) up to ≈0.01.

14. Pavementscapes: a large-scale hierarchical image dataset for asphalt pavement damage segmentation

Abstract

Pavement damage segmentation has benefited enormously from deep learning. % and large-scale datasets. However, few current public datasets limit the potential exploration of deep learning in the application of pavement damage segmentation. To address this problem, this study has proposed Pavementscapes, a large-scale dataset to develop and evaluate methods for pavement damage segmentation. Pavementscapes is comprised of 4,000 images with a resolution of $1024 \times 2048$, which have been recorded in the real-world pavement inspection projects with 15 different pavements. A total of 8,680 damage instances are manually labeled with six damage classes at the pixel level. The statistical study gives a thorough investigation and analysis of the proposed dataset. The numeral experiments propose the top-performing deep neural networks capable of segmenting pavement damages, which provides the baselines of the open challenge for pavement inspection. The experiment results also indicate the existing problems for damage segmentation using deep learning, and this study provides potential solutions.

Abstract

Weakly cemented coal measure strata are widely distributed in Xinjiang Mining Area, roof stability control is an important problem restricting coal mine safety production. By summarizing the types, causes and development trends of mining accidents in Xinjiang in recent 11 years, taking the roof accident of 1802 transportation lane of a coal mine in Dananhu Mining Area of Hami as an example, by the method of field investigation, laboratory test and field test, the characteristics and main influencing factors of typical roof disasters of weakly consolidated roadway in Xinjiang Mining Area are analyzed, and it is determined that the double damage of tunneling disturbance and roof water is the main cause of roof disasters of weakly consolidated roadway. Based on this, the anchoring force tests of roof bolts（cables） in different seepage areas were carried out, and the attenuation law of the anchoring force of roof bolts（cables） in areas with insignificant, moderate and large seepage was obtained with the exposed time of roof. The “active + passive” combined support technology system of weakly cemented surrounding rock roadway in different influence periods of “early-middle-late” and different spatial positions of weakly cemented surrounding rock roadway in “deep-middle-shallow” was constructed, and the control countermeasures of weakly cemented surrounding rock roadway roof in different periods and regions were proposed.

Abstract

Ordered interlayer stacking is intrinsic in two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) and has strong implications on COF's optoelectronic properties. Reversible interlayer sliding, corresponding to shearing of 2D layers along their basal plane, is an appealing dynamic control of both structures and properties, yet it remains unexplored in the 2D COF field. Herein, we demonstrate that the reversible interlayer sliding can be realized in an imine-linked tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based COF TTF-DMTA. The solvent treatment induces crystalline phase changes between the proposed staircase-like sql net structure and a slightly slipped eclipsed sql net structure. The solvation-induced crystallinity changes correlate well with reversible spectroscopic and electrical conductivity changes as demonstrated in oriented COF thin films. In contrast, no reversible switching is observed in a related TTF-TA COF, which differs from TTF-DMTA in terms of the absence of methoxy groups on the phenylene linkers. This work represents the first 2D COF example of which eclipsed and staircase-like aggregated states are interchangeably accessed via interlayer sliding, an uncharted structural feature that may enable applications such as chemiresistive sensors.
