Perivascular mural cells including vascular smooth cells (VSMCs) and pericytes are integral components of the vascular system. In the central nervous system (CNS), pericytes are also indispensable for the blood-brain barrier (BBB), blood-spinal cord barrier, and blood-retinal barrier and play key roles in maintaining cerebrovascular and neuronal functions. However, the functional specifications of pericytes between CNS and peripheral organs have not been resolved at the genetic and molecular levels. Hence, the generation of reliable CNS pericyte-specific models and genetic tools remains very challenging. Here, we report a new CNS pericyte marker in mice. This putative cation-transporting ATPase 13A5 (Atp13a5)marker was identified through single-cell transcriptomics, based on its specificity to brain pericytes. We further generated a knock-inmodel with both tdTomato reporter and Cre recombinase. Using this model to trace the distribution of Atp13a5-positive pericytes in mice, we found that the tdTomato reporter reliably labels the CNS pericytes, including the ones in spinal cord and retina but not peripheral organs. Interestingly, brain pericytes are likely shaped by the developing neural environment, as Atp13a5-positive pericytes start to appear around murine embryonic day 15 (E15) and expand along the cerebrovasculature. Thus, Atp13a5 is a specific marker of CNS pericyte lineage, and this Atp13a5-based model is a reliable tool to explore the heterogeneity of pericytes and BBB functions in health and diseases. The carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising method to both reduce greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and provide an alternative to fossil fuel by converting water and CO2 into high-energy-density chemicals. Nevertheless, the CO2RR suffers from high chemical reaction barriers and low selectivity. Here we demonstrate that 4 nm gap plasmonic nano-finger arrays provide a reliable and repeatable plasmon-resonant photocatalyst for multiple-electrons reactions: the CO2RR to generate higher-order hydrocarbons. Electromagnetics simulation shows that hot spots with 10,000 light intensity enhancement can be achieved using nano-gap fingers under a resonant wavelength of 638 nm. From cryogenic 1H-NMR spectra, formic acid and acetic acid productions are observed with a nano-fingers array sample. After 1 h laser irradiation, we only observe the generation of formic acid in the liquid solution. While increasing the laser irradiation period, we observe both formic and acetic acid in the liquid solution. We also observe that laser irradiation at different wavelengths significantly affected the generation of formic acid and acetic acid. The ratio, 2.29, of the product concentration generated at the resonant wavelength 638 nm and the non-resonant wavelength 405 nm is close to the ratio, 4.93, of the generated hot electrons inside the TiO2 layer at different wavelengths from the electromagnetics simulation. The recently derived exact representation of the quantum propagator in terms of semiclassical initial value representations (SCIVR) is used to optimize the width parameter in the SCIVR. Minimization of the expectation value of the correction operator related to the SCIVR leads to improved convergence of the representation. A test on a model one-dimensional double-well potential demonstrates that this optimization can give essentially exact results using only the first two terms in the SCIVR expansion of the exact propagator. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. Advancements in portable electronic devices and electric powered transportation has drawn more attention to high energy density batteries, especially lithium–sulfur batteries due to the low cost of sulfur and its high energy density. However, the lithium–sulfur battery is still quite far from commercialization mostly because of incompatibility between all major components of the battery—the cathode, anode, and electrolyte. Here a methodology is demonstrated that shows promise in significantly improving battery stability by multilayer encapsulation of sulfur particles, while using conventional electrolytes, which allows a long cycle life and an improved Coulombic efficiency battery at low electrolyte feeding. The multilayer encapsulated sulfur battery demonstrates a Coulombic efficiency as high as 98%, when a binder‐free electrode is used. It is also shown that the all‐out self‐discharge of the cell after 168 h can be reduced from 34% in the regular sulfur battery to less than 9% in the battery with the multilayer encapsulated sulfur electrode. A stable lithium sulfur battery is enabled by a multilayer encapsulated sulfur nanocomposite electrode. The inner coating layer is a metal‐oxide capable of anchoring long‐chain polysulfides and the outer coating layer is a conductive porous polymer resulting in a battery with more than 500 cycles.
