11. Distribution of Kloosterman paths to high prime power moduli

Abstract

We consider the distribution of polygonal paths joining the partial sums of normalized Kloosterman sums modulo an increasingly high power p^n of a fixed odd prime p, a pure depth-aspect analogue of theorems of Kowalski-Sawin and Ricotta-Royer-Shparlinski. We find that this collection of Kloosterman paths naturally splits into finitely many disjoint ensembles, each of which converges in law as n->\infty to a distinct complex valued random continuous function. We further find that the random series resulting from gluing together these limits for every p converges in law as p->\infty, and that paths joining partial Kloosterman sums acquire a different and universal limiting shape after a modest rearrangement of terms. As the key arithmetic input we prove, using the p-adic method of stationary phase including highly singular cases, that complete sums of products of arbitrarily many Kloosterman sums to high prime power moduli exhibit either power savings or power alignment in shifts of arguments., Comment: 35 pages

12. Brief Report: Autistic Traits Predict Spectral Correlates of Vowel Intelligibility for Female Speakers

Abstract

A growing body of research finds that neurotypical autistic traits are predictive of speech perception and language comprehension patterns, but considerably less is known about the influence of these traits on speech production. In this brief report, we present an analysis of vowel productions from 74 American English speakers who participated in a communicative speaking task. Results show higher autistic trait load to be broadly and inversely related to spectral correlates of vowel intelligibility. However, the statistical significance of this relationship is specific to autistic traits along the pragmatic communication dimension, and limited to female speakers.

Abstract

As a dynamic organelle, lipid droplets (LDs) are intricately involved in lipid storage, metabolism and various life processes. Their aberrant behaviour commonly signifies cellular dysfunction, which may contribute to the occurrence of a variety of diseases, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Thus, it holds immense medical significance to develop specific probes targeting LDs to monitor the changes in the development of NAFLD. To this end, a D–π–A structural probe TSB was synthesized by Knoevenagel reaction based on triphenylamine and β-diketone boron difluoride. Optical studies revealed that probe TSB exhibited a strong solvation effect and a large Stokes shift (up to 299 nm in acetonitrile solution). Moreover, wash-free and co-localization experiments demonstrated the probe's precise targeting of LD sites within cells through a washing-free procedure with extreme specificity. Importantly, TSB has been validated for distinguishing between fatty liver and normal liver at the organ level, thereby holding potential for early diagnosis of NAFLD. These experimental findings will lay a theoretical foundation for the design and synthesis of more superior fluorescent probes specifically targeting LDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The object of the study is samples of food powders obtained by grinding the products of the collection and processing of a number of grain crops, using air-grinding technology in an improved jet mill. One of the most important problems of the modern food industry is that for the production of flour from cereals endosperm is used while the most important nutrients are found inshells and the germ of the grain. As a result of its grinding in conventional mills, common at existing mills, large pieces of bran and a large variation in the particle size of the grinding products are obtained, and this method is energy-intensive. According to the authors, the best solution to ensure truly whole grain grinding – that is, grinding grains with shells – is air grinding in jet mills. An improved jet mill makes it possible to grind both endosperm and grain shells into flour of the same consistency. From the same amount of raw material, therefore, it is possible to produce approximately 30% more final grinding products. It is also important that the improved jet mill, under proven conditions, spends no more energy for grinding than a conventional mill. For research, the most popular products ground in such a mill were taken – wheat flour (black grain), buckwheat flour (from roasted buckwheat) and wheat bran.The first two products are whole grain milled, and the bran is produced from the collapse of wheat grown in accordance with the requirements of organic farming. Samples of powders obtained by grinding these products in an improved jet mill were compared with control samples – produced from similar raw materials in a roller mill – the most common design in service with mills. Physical indicators of the powders, thermophysical properties and biotechnological parameters were carried out. The obtained results allow to state that whole grain grinding produced on an improved jet mill has the characteristics better or close to standard types of flour produced on conventional mills. It allows them to be used without significant changes in the formulation of products with their addition (bakery, pasta, etc.), and also to create new dietary, healthy products rich in biologically active substances.

49. Stretchable Oxygen-Tolerant Sensor Based on a Single-Atom Fe–N4Electrocatalyst for Observing the Role of Oxidative Stress in Hypertension

Abstract

Oxidative stress and related oxidative damage have a causal relation with the pathogenesis of hypertension. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the mechanism of oxidative stress in hypertension by applying mechanical forces on cells to simulate hypertension while monitoring the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from cells under an oxidative stress environment. However, cellular level research has rarely been explored because monitoring the ROS released by cells is still challenging owing to the interference of O2. In this study, an Fe single-atom-site catalyst anchored on N-doped carbon-based materials (Fe SASC/N–C) was synthesized, which exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at a peak potential of +0.1 V and can effectively avoid the interference of O2. Furthermore, we constructed a flexible and stretchable electrochemical sensor based on the Fe SASC/N–C catalyst to study the release of cellular H2O2under simulated hypoxic and hypertension conditions. Density functional theory calculations show that the highest transition state energy barrier from the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), i.e., O2to H2O, is 0.38 eV. In comparison, the H2O2reduction reaction (HPRR) can be completed only by overcoming a lower energy barrier of 0.24 eV, endowing the HPRR to be more favorable on Fe SASC/N–C compared with the ORR. This study provided a reliable electrochemical platform for real-time investigation of H2O2-related underlying mechanisms of the hypertension process.
