Search

The eXTP mission is a major project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), with a large involvement of Europe. Its scientific payload includes four instruments: SFA, PFA, LAD and WFM. They offer an unprecedented simultaneous wide-band Xray timing and polarimetry sensitivity. A large European consortium is contributing to the eXTP study, both for the science and the instrumentation. Europe is expected to provide two of the four instruments: LAD and WFM; the LAD is led by Italy and the WFM by Spain. The WFM for eXTP is based on the design originally proposed for the LOFT ESA M3 mission, that underwent a Phase A feasibility study. It will be a wide field of view X-ray monitor instrument working in the 2-50 keV energy range, achieved with large-area Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs), similar to the ones used for the LAD but with better spatial resolution. The WFM will consist of 3 pairs of coded mask cameras with a total combined field of view (FoV) of 90x180 degrees at zero response and a source localisation accuracy of ~1 arc min. The main goal of the WFM is to provide triggers for the target of opportunity observations of the SFA, PFA and LAD, in order to perform the core science programme, dedicated to the study of matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. In addition, the unprecedented combination of large field of view and imaging capability, down to 2 keV, of the WFM will allow eXTP to make important discoveries of the variable and transient X-ray sky, and provide X-ray coverage of a broad range of astrophysical objects covered under 'observatory science', such as gamma-ray bursts, fast radio bursts, gravitational wave electromagnetic counterparts. We report the discovery of a peculiar X-ray transient, EP240408a, by Einstein Probe (EP) and follow-up studies made with EP, Swift, NICER, GROND, ATCA and other ground-based multi-wavelength telescopes. The new transient was first detected with Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board EP on April 8th, 2024, manifested in an intense yet brief X-ray flare lasting for 12 seconds. The flare reached a peak flux of 3.9x10^(-9) erg/cm2/s in 0.5-4 keV, about 300 times brighter than the underlying X-ray emission detected throughout the observation. Rapid and more precise follow-up observations by EP/FXT, Swift and NICER confirmed the finding of this new transient. Its X-ray spectrum is non-thermal in 0.5-10 keV, with a power-law photon index varying within 1.8-2.5. The X-ray light curve shows a plateau lasting for about 4 days, followed by a steep decay till becoming undetectable about 10 days after the initial detection. Based on its temporal property and constraints from previous EP observations, an unusual timescale in the range of 7-23 days is found for EP240408a, which is intermediate between the commonly found fast and long-term transients. No counterparts have been found in optical and near-infrared, with the earliest observation at 17 hours after the initial X-ray detection, suggestive of intrinsically weak emission in these bands. We demonstrate that the remarkable properties of EP240408a are inconsistent with any of the transient types known so far, by comparison with, in particular, jetted tidal disruption events, gamma-ray bursts, X-ray binaries and fast blue optical transients. The nature of EP240408a thus remains an enigma. We suggest that EP240408a may represent a new type of transients with intermediate timescales of the order of about 10 days. The Chasing All Transients Constellation Hunters (CATCH) space mission is focused on exploring the dynamic universe via X-ray follow-up observations of various transients. The first pathfinder of the CATCH mission, CATCH-1, was launched on June 22, 2024, alongside the Space-based multiband astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) mission. CATCH-1 is equipped with narrow-field optimized Micro Pore Optics (MPOs) featuring a large effective area and incorporates four Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs) in its focal plane. This paper presents the system calibration results conducted before the satellite integration. Utilizing the data on the performance of the mirror and detectors obtained through the system calibration, combined with simulated data, the ground calibration database can be established. Measuring the relative positions of the mirror and detector system, which were adjusted during system calibration, allows for accurate installation of the entire satellite. Furthermore, the paper outlines the operational workflow of the ground network post-satellite launch.

Electron-beam microscopy and spectroscopy featuring atomic-scale spatial resolution have become essential tools used daily in almost all branches of nanoscale science and technology. As a natural supercontinuum source of light, free electrons couple with phonons, plasmons, electron-hole pairs, inter- and intra-band transitions, and inner-shell ionization. The multiple excitations, intertwined with the intricate nature of nanostructured samples, present significant challenges in isolating specific spectral characteristics amidst complex experimental backgrounds. Here we introduce the approach of synthetic complex frequency waves to mitigate these challenges in free-electron--light interaction. The complex frequency waves, created through causality-informed coherent superposition of real-frequency waves induced by free electrons, offer virtual gain to offset material losses. This amplifies and enhances spectral features, as confirmed by our electron energy loss and cathodoluminescence measurements on multi-layer membranes, suspended nanoparticles, and film-coupled nanostructures. Strikingly, we reveal that our approach can retrieve resonance excitation completed buried underneath the zero-loss peak, substantially enhance the quality of hyperspectral imaging, and resolve entangled multiple-photon--electron events in their quantum interaction. Our findings indicate the versatile utility of complex frequency waves in various electron-beam spectroscopy and their promising diagnostic capabilities in free-electron quantum optics.

The non-Abelian braiding describes the exchange behavior of anyons, which can be leveraged to encode qubits for quantum computing. Recently, this concept has been realized in classical photonic and acoustic systems. However, these implementations are constrained by adiabatic conditions, necessitating long operation distances and impeding practical applications. Here, we conceive and demonstrate a shortcut to adiabatic (STA) braiding of telecommunication light in three-dimensional silicon photonic chips. Our device comprises tri-layer silicon waveguides stacked and embedded in the SU-8 polymer, employing an STA strategy to expedite the braiding operations and give rise to compact devices that function as photonic quantum X, Y, and Z gates. We further experimentally observed non-Abelian braiding behaviors based on this STA-braiding scheme. Remarkably, this achievement represents the most compact braiding apparatus ever reported, with a size reduction of nearly three orders of magnitude compared to previous works. This work presents a feasible approach to accelerating adiabatic braiding evolutions, paving the way for compact, CMOS-compatible non-Abelian photonic devices.

The coalescence of binary neutron stars (BNS) is a prolific source of gravitational waves (GWs) and electromagnetic (EM) radiation, offering a dual observational window into the Universe. Lowering the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) threshold is a simple and cost-effective way to enhance the detection probability of GWs from BNS mergers. In this study, we introduce a metric of the purity of joint GW and EM detections $P_{\rm joint}$, which is in analogue to $P_{\rm astro}$ in GW only observations. By simulating BNS merger GWs jointly detected by the HLV network and EM counterparts (kilonovae and short Gamma-ray bursts, sGRBs) with an assumed merger rate density of BNS, we generate catalogs of GW events and EM counterparts. Through this simulation, we analyze joint detection pairs, both correct and misidentified. We find the following: 1. For kilonovae, requiring $P_{\rm joint}>$ 95\% instead of $P_{\rm astro}>95\%$ reduces the S/N from 9.2 to 8.5-8.8, allowing 5-13 additional joint detections per year and increasing the GW detection volume by 9-17\%; 2. For sGRBs, requiring $P_{\rm joint}>$ 95\% instead of $P_{\rm astro}$ reduces the S/N from 9.2 to 8.1-8.5; 3. Increasing kilonova or sGRB detection capability does not improve $P_{\rm joint}$ due to a higher rate of misidentifications. We also show that sub-threshold GW and kilonova detections can reduce the uncertainty in measuring the Hubble constant to 89-92\% of its original value, and sub-threshold GW and sGRB observations can enhance the precision of constraining the speed of GWs to 88\% of previously established values., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 8 pages, 7 figures

The brightest-of-all-time gamma-ray burst (GRB), GRB 221009A, is the first GRB observed to have emission line (up to 37 MeV) in its prompt emission spectra. It is naturally explained as \pair annihilation line that was Doppler boosted in the relativistic jet of the GRB. In this work, we repeatedly apply the simple optical depth argument to different physical processes necessary to produce an observable \pair annihilation line. This approach results in robust constraints on the physics of the line: We conclude that in GRB 221009A, the \pair pairs were produced at a radius greater than $4.3\times 10^{15}$\,cm from the central engine, and annihilated in a region between $1.4\times 10^{16}$\,cm and $4.3\times 10^{16}$\,cm. From these constraints, we established a self-consistent picture of \pair production, cooling, and annihilation. We also derived a criterion for pair production in the GRB prompt emission: $E_{\rm{iso}} \gtrsim3.3\times 10^{53} E_{\rm{peak},100} (1+z) R^2_{\rm{prod},16}~\text{erg}$. Using this criterion, we find tens of candidate GRBs that could have produced \pair in prompt emissions to annihilate. GRB 221009A is with the highest likelihood according to this criterion. Time-varying effects have unveiled new possibilities for manipulating electromagnetic waves through the temporal dimension. In this study, we experimentally explore these effects in the nonlinear optical process of terahertz (THz) generation using optically pumped indium tin oxide (ITO) films. The ultrafast carrier dynamics in the ITO film endow the second-order nonlinear susceptibility (\c{hi}(2)) with sub-picosecond temporal evolution, establishing a temporal boundary for the generated THz waves. We observe significant amplitude and frequency modulations in the THz generation at various transients, attributed to the time-varying complex amplitude of the \c{hi}(2). Moreover, we also observed polarization modulations when further exploiting the tensor properties of \c{hi}(2). This work advances the exploration of time-varying effects into the nonlinear regime through frequency down-conversion, effectively transferring the strong time-varying material response from the near-infrared (NIR) band to the THz band. These findings open up new opportunities for realizing time-varying phenomena that specifically require single-cycle modulation.

We present a comprehensive study based on multi-wavelength observations from the NuSTAR, NICER, Swift, Fermi, NEOWISE, and ATCA telescopes during the 2022 outburst of the black hole X-ray binary IGR J17091-3624. Our investigation concentrates on the heartbeat-like variability in the X-ray emission, with the aim of using it as a tool to unravel the origin of the non-thermal emission during the heartbeat state. Through X-ray timing and spectral analysis, we observe that the heartbeat-like variability correlates with changes in the disk temperature, supporting the disk radiation pressure instability scenario. Moreover, in addition to a Comptonization component, our time-averaged and phase-resolved spectroscopy reveal the presence of a power-law component that varies independently from the disk component. Combined with the radio to X-ray spectral energy distribution fitting, our results suggest that the power-law component could originate from synchrotron self-Compton radiation in the jet, which requires a strong magnetic field of about $B = (0.3$-$3.5)\times10^6$ G. Additionally, assuming that IGR J17091-3624 and GRS 1915+105 share the same radio-X-ray correlation coefficient during both the hard and the heartbeat states, we obtain a distance of $13.7\pm2.3$ kpc for IGR J17091-3624., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

IGR J17091-3624, in addition to GRS 1915+105, is the only black hole X-ray binary that displays ``heartbeat"-like variability characterized by structured flares with high amplitudes. In this study, we conduct a detailed phase-resolved analysis of the recently identified ``heartbeat"-like Class X variability in IGR J17091-3624 during its 2022 outburst, utilizing data from NICER and NuSTAR observations. A shortage in the high-energy (>20 keV) X-ray flux is detected at peak phases of the soft X-ray flare at a ~15 sigma confidence level from the phase-folded light curves. Furthermore, our phase-resolved spectral analysis reveals variations in the spectral shape, particularly showing significant synchronous variations in the disk temperature and flux with the count rate. These findings imply that the flare is primarily driven by instabilities within the accretion disk, consistent with previous studies on the well-known Class rho variability in GRS 1915+105. However, we also observe a positive correlation between the disk temperature and flux over the flare cycle, which differs from a loop relation between the two parameters found in the Class rho variability. This could suggest differences in underlying physical processes between the two variability classes. Variations in the Componization component during flares are also observed: the electron temperature and covering fraction show anti-correlations with the disk flux, revealing potential interactions between the accretion disk and the corona during these flares., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are commonly observed in X-ray light curves of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs); however, their origin remains a topic of debate. In order to thoroughly investigate variations in spectral properties on the QPO timescale, we utilized the Hilbert-Huang transform technique to conduct phase-resolved spectroscopy across a broad energy band for LFQPOs in the newly discovered BHXRB Swift J1727.8-1613. This is achieved through quasi-simultaneous observations from Neutron star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER), Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray (NuSTAR), and Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT). Our analysis reveals that both the non-thermal and disk-blackbody components exhibit variations on the QPO timescale, with the former dominating the QPO variability. For the spectral parameters, we observe modulation of the disk temperature, spectral indices, and reflection fraction with the QPO phase with high statistical significance (>5\sigma). Notably, the variation in the disk temperature is found to precede the variations in the non-thermal and disk fluxes by ~0.4-0.5 QPO cycles. We suggest that these findings offer further evidence that the type-C QPO variability is a result of geometric effects of the accretion flow., Comment: Accepted for pulication in The Astrophysical Journal

The Einstein Probe (EP) achieved its first detection and localization of a bright X-ray flare, EP240219a, on 2024 February 19, during its commissioning phase. Subsequent targeted searches triggered by the EP240219a alert identified a faint, untriggered gamma-ray burst (GRB) in the archived data of Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM), Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), and Insight-HXMT/HE. The EP Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) light curve reveals a long duration of approximately 160 s with a slow decay, whereas the Fermi/GBM light curve shows a total duration of approximately 70 s. The peak in the Fermi/GBM light curve occurs slightly later with respect to the peak seen in the EP/WXT light curve. Our spectral analysis shows that a single cutoff power-law (PL) model effectively describes the joint EP/WXT--Fermi/GBM spectra in general, indicating coherent broad emission typical of GRBs. The model yielded a photon index of $\sim -1.70 \pm 0.05$ and a peak energy of $\sim 257 \pm 134$ keV. After detection of GRB 240219A, long-term observations identified several candidates in optical and radio wavelengths, none of which was confirmed as the afterglow counterpart during subsequent optical and near-infrared follow-ups. The analysis of GRB 240219A classifies it as an X-ray rich GRB (XRR) with a high peak energy, presenting both challenges and opportunities for studying the physical origins of X-ray flashes, XRRs, and classical GRBs. Furthermore, linking the cutoff PL component to nonthermal synchrotron radiation suggests that the burst is driven by a Poynting flux-dominated outflow., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

Dead time is a common instrumental effect of X-ray detectors which would alter the behavior of timing properties of astronomical signals, such as distorting the shape of power density spectra (PDS), affecting the root-mean-square of potential quasi-periodic oscillation signals, etc. We revisit the effects of the dead time of Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) onboard Insight-HXMT, based on the simulation of electronic read-out mechanism that causes the dead time, and the real data. We investigate dead time effects on the pulse profile as well as the Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) signals. The dead time coefficient suggests a linear correlation with the observed count rate in each phase bin of the pulse profile according to the simulation of periodic signal as well as the real data observed on Swift J0243.6+6124. The Fourier-amplitude-difference (FAD) method could well recover the intrinsic shape of the observed PDS in the case that the PDS is from two identical detectors. We apply this technique on ME, by splitting the 9 FPGA modules into 2 groups. The results indicate that the FAD technique suits the case when two groups of detectors are not largely different; and the recovered PDS of Sco X-1 observed by ME slightly enhances the significance of the previously known QPO signal, meanwhile the root-mean-square of QPO is significantly improved. Spontaneous symmetry breaking plays a pivotal role in physics ranging from the emergence of elementary particles to the phase transitions of matter. The spontaneous breaking of continuous time translation symmetry leads to a novel state of matter named continuous time crystal (CTC). It exhibits periodic oscillation without the need for periodic driving, and the relative phases for repetitively realized oscillations are random. However, the mechanism behind the spontaneous symmetry breaking in CTCs, particularly the random phases, remains elusive. Here we propose and experimentally realize two types of CTCs based on distinct mechanisms: manifold topology and near-chaotic motion. We observe both types of CTCs in thermal atomic ensembles by artificially synthesizing spin-spin nonlinear interactions through a measurement-feedback scheme. Our work provides general recipes for the realization of CTCs, and paves the way for exploring CTCs in various systems.

We present an energy-dependent analysis for the type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the black hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8-1613 using Insight-HXMT observations. We find that the QPO fractional rms at energies above 40 keV is significantly higher than that below 20 keV. This is the first report of a high energy (HE)-rms excess in the rms spectrum of a black hole X-ray binary. In the high energy band, an extra hard component is observed in additional to the standard thermal Comptonization component at similar energy band. The value of the QPO HE-rms excess is not only correlated with the disk parameters and the photon index of the standard Comptonization component, but also exhibits a moderate positive correlation with the flux of the additional hard spectral component. No features in the QPO phase-lag spectra are seen corresponding to the additional hard component. We propose that the additional hard component in the spectrum may originate from jet emission and the associated QPO HE-rms excess can be explained by the precession of the jet base.

Topological singularities, such as Weyl points and Dirac points, can give rise to unidirectional propagation channels known as chiral zero modes (CZMs) when subject to a magnetic field. These CZMs are responsible for intriguing phenomena like the chiral anomaly in quantum systems. The propagation direction of each CZM is determined by both the applied magnetic field and the topological charge of the singularity point. While counter-propagating CZMs have been observed in 2D and 3D systems, the realization of co-propagating CZMs has remained elusive. Here we present the first experimental observation of co-propagating CZMs in magnetic photonic crystals hosting a single pair of ideal Weyl points WPs. By manipulating the crystal's structural configuration, we spatially alter the locations of the WPs, creating pseudo-magnetic fields in opposite directions between them. This arrangement results in a pair of CZMs that possess the same group velocity and co-propagate. Our work opens up new possibilities for topological manipulation of wave propagation and may lead to advancements in optical waveguides, switches, and various other applications., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Tellegen medium has long been a topic of debate, with its existence being contested over several decades. It was first proposed by Tellegen in 1948 and is characterized by a real-valued cross coupling between electric and magnetic responses, distinguishing it from the well-known chiral medium that has imaginary coupling coefficients. Significantly, Tellegen responses are closely linked to axion dynamics, an extensively studied subject in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the realization of Tellegen metamaterials in the microwave region through a judicious combination of subwavelength metallic resonators, gyromagnetic materials, and permanent magnet discs. We observe the key signature of the Tellegen response, i.e. a Kerr rotation for reflected wave, while the polarization remains the same in the transmission direction. The retrieved effective Tellegen parameter is several orders of magnitude greater than that of natural materials. Our work opens door to a variety of nonreciprocal photonic devices and may provide a platform for studying axion physics., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

POLAR-2 is a dedicated gamma-ray polarimeter currently foreseen to be launched towards the China Space Station around 2027. The design of the detector is based on the legacy of its predecessor mission POLAR which was launched in 2016. POLAR-2 aims to measure the polarization of the Gamma-ray Burst prompt emission within the 30-800 keV energy range. Thanks to its high sensitivity to gamma-ray polarization, as well as its large effective area, POLAR-2 will provide the most precise measurements of this type to date. Such measurements are key to improve our understanding of the astrophysical processes responsible for Gamma-Ray Bursts. The detector consists of a segmented array of plastic scintillator bars, each one of which is read out by a Silicon PhotoMultiplier channel. The flight model of POLAR-2 will contain a total of 6400 scintillators. These are divided into 100 groups of 64 bars each, in so-called polarimeter modules. In recent years, the collaboration has designed and produced the first prototypes of these polarimeter modules and subjected these to space qualification tests. In addition, in April 2023, the first of these modules were calibrated using fully polarized gamma-ray beams at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in France. In this work, we will present the results of this calibration campaign and compare these to the simulated performance of the POLAR-2 modules. Potential improvements to the design are also discussed. Finally, the measurements are used, in combination with the verified simulation framework, to estimate the scientific performance of the full POLAR-2 detector and compare it to its predecessor., Comment: Accepted for publication in JINST

We report data analysis results about the outburst evolution and spectral properties during the hard state of the recently discovered X-ray transient Swift J1727.8-163 as observed by \emph{Insight}-HXMT and NuSTAR. We find that the broadband X-ray spectrum of Swift J1727.8-163 is more complex than the most typical spectral patterns of black hole X-ray binary systems, with not only a comparatively weaker reflection component but also an additional spectral continuum component, manifesting itself as a hard X-ray tail beyond the thermal Comptonization description detectable below 100 keV. This additional component can be phenomenologically well fitted by adding an extra power-law model with high energy exponential cutoff in the 2-120 keV energy band. We made an attempt to explain the broadband X-ray spectral continuum with a thermal/non-thermal hybrid plasma corona scenario , and find an ultra high compactness parameter ($l_{\rm s}\sim2000$) and a steep non-thermal electron distribution ($\Gamma_{\rm inj}>4$), suggesting the source was accreting with high Eddington rates and that the electron acceleration mechanism is not very efficient. We also present a detailed multi-epoch analysis of spectral properties using \emph{Insight}-HXMT data to investigate the evolution of the key physical properties regarding the disk and corona during the hard states. No significant variation is found with the inner disk radius and the coronal temperature during this time period, and the weak reflection and hard X-ray tail features are persistent. We discuss the physical implications of our spectral analysis results in the context of disk-corona relation, particle acceleration, and jet contribution, during the rise of a black hole X-ray binary in outburst., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Owing to the broad energy coverage of Insight-HXMT in the hard X-ray band, we detected the highest energy of pulsation exceeding 200 keV around the 2017-2018 outburst peak of the first Galactic pulsating ultraluminous X-ray source (PULX) Swift J0243.6+6124, which is the highest energy detected from PULXs to date. We also obtained the highest energy of pulsation of every exposure during the outburst in 2017-2018, and found the highest energy is roughly positively correlated with luminosity. Using our newly developed method, we identified the critical luminosity being $4\times 10^{38}\, \rm erg\,s^{-1}$ when the main peaks of the low and high energy pulse profiles became aligned, which separates the fan-beam dominated and pencil-beam dominated accretion regimes. Above the critical luminosity, the phase of the main peak shifted gradually from 0.5 to 0.8 until the outburst peak in all energy bands is reached, which is in agreement with the phase shift found previously at low energies. Despite persistent efforts to understand the dynamics of creativity of scientists over careers in terms of productivity, impact, and prize, little is known about the dynamics of scientists' disruptive efforts that affect individual academic careers and drive scientific advance. Drawing on millions of data over six decades and across nineteen disciplines, associating the publication records of individual scientists with the disruption index, we systematically quantify the temporal pattern of disruptive ideas over individual scientific careers, providing a detailed understanding of the macro phenomenon of scientific stagnation from the individual perspective. We start by checking the relationship between disruption-based and citation-based publication profiles. Next, we observe the finite inequality in the disruptive productivity of scientists, diminishing gradually as the level of disruption increases. We then identify the initial burst phenomenon in disruption dynamics. It is further revealed that while early engagement in high disruption frictions away initial productivity, compared to initial advantage in productivity or impact, initial high disruption ensures more subsequent academic viability evidenced by a longer career span and relatively final higher productivity, but does not necessarily guarantee academic success throughout careers. Further analysis shows that increasing disruptive work is uncorrelated to overall productivity but negatively correlated with the overall impact. However, increasing disruptive work in the early career is associated with higher overall productivity, yet lower overall productivity in the later career. Our research underscores the urgent need for a policy shift that encourages a balance between the pursuit of disruptive efforts and the achievement of impactful outcomes.

Band crossing points, such as Weyl and Dirac points, play a crucial role in the topological classification of materials and guide the exploration of exotic topological phases. The Berry dipole, a three-dimensional band crossing point beyond the Chern class, hosts a dipolar Berry curvature field and gives rise to numerous nontrivial quantum geometric effects. It has been proposed that the Berry dipole exhibits oriented Landau levels, whose spectrum critically relies on the orientation of the applied magnetic field. However, experimental demonstration of this phenomenon has remained elusive. Here we experimentally demonstrate oriented Landau levels by carefully engineering an inhomogeneous acoustic lattice. We observe distinct Landau level spectra and different propagation properties when the orientation of the pseudomagnetic field is reversed. Notably, we discover a new type of helical zero modes whose existence critically depends on the magnetic field's orientation. Our work paves the way for studying band crossings beyond Chern-class crossing points, including Berry multipoles and even-dimensional monopoles. Furthermore, it offers new insight for exploring topological devices.

Non-Hermitian physics has received great attention recently. In particular, band structures in non-Hermitian systems can be engineered to exhibit various topological effects. Among them, one of the most intriguing phenomena is the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). Here, we investigate NHSE in systems featuring directed chains or directed graphs, where the arrows denote the directions of the non-reciprocal hopping between neighbouring nodes. We show that the systems exhibit pure skin modes with non-oscillatory wavefunctions, in contrast to previously studied NHSE. Interestingly, the sum of the decay constants along different directions for each skin mode obeys a power partition rule, i.e. their sum is a fixed value and the value of each constant only depends on the ratio between the non-reciprocal hopping parameters and is independent of detailed graph configurations. We present an analysis of the whole 2018 outburst of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 with Insight-HXMT data. We focus our study on the temporal evolution of the parameters of the source. We employ two different models to fit the disk's thermal spectrum: the Newtonian model DISKBB and the relativistic model NKBB. These two models provide different pictures of the source in the soft state. With DISKBB, we find that the inner edge of the disk is close to the innermost stable circular orbit of a fast-rotating black hole and the corona changes geometry from the hard to the soft state. With NKBB, we find that the disk is truncated in the soft state and that the coronal geometry does not change significantly during the whole outburst. However, the model with NKBB can predict an untruncated disk around a fast-rotating black hole if we assume that the disk inclination angle is around $30^\circ$ (instead of $\sim 60^\circ$, which is the inclination angle of the jet and is usually adopted as the disk inclination angle in the literature) and we employ a high-density reflection model. In such a case, we measure a high value of the black hole spin parameter with observations in the soft state, in agreement with the high spin value found from the analysis of the reflection features and in disagreement with the low spin value found by previous continuum-fitting method measurements with the disk inclination angle set to the value of the jet inclination angle., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. v2: refereed version

Cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) are the absorption features in the X-ray spectra of strongly magnetized accretion neutron stars (NSs), which are probably the most reliable probe to the surface magnetic fields of NSs. The high mass X-ray binary GX 301--2 exhibits a very wide, variable and complicated CRSF in the average spectra, which should be two absorption lines based on NuStar and Insight-HXMT observations. With the Insight-HXMT frequent observations, we performed the phase-resolved spectroscopy and confirmed two cyclotron absorption lines in the phase-resolved spectra, with their centroid energy ratio $\sim 1.6-1.7$ in the super-critical luminosity case. A major hindrance in understanding those CRSFs is the very poorly constrained magnetic inclination angle, which is also a fundamental property of a NS and key to understanding the emission characteristics of a pulsar. Comparing the phase-resolved CRSF with simulated X-ray spectra, the magnetic inclination angle is found to be $\gtrsim 70^{\circ}$, i.e., nearly orthogonal between the NS's spin and magnetic axies. Since their first discovery in the late 1960s, Gamma-ray bursts have attracted an exponentially growing interest from the international community due to their central role in the most highly debated open questions of the modern research of astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. These range from the intimate nuclear composition of high density material within the core of ultra-dense neuron stars, to stellar evolution via the collapse of massive stars, the production and propagation of gravitational waves, as well as the exploration of the early Universe by unveiling first stars and galaxies (assessing also their evolution and cosmic re-ionization). GRBs have stimulated in the past $\sim$50 years the development of cutting-edge technological instruments for observations of high energy celestial sources from space, leading to the launch and successful operations of many different scientific missions (several of them still in data taking mode nowadays). In this review, we provide a brief description of the GRB-dedicated missions from space being designed and developed for the future. The list of these projects, not meant to be exhaustive, shall serve as a reference to interested readers to understand what is likely to come next to lead the further development of GRB research and associated phenomenology., Comment: Accepted for publication on Universe. We report accretion-powered pulsations for the first time during thermonuclear bursts in hard X-rays, which were observed with Insight-HXMT in 2022 during the outburst of the accreting X-ray millisecond pulsar MAXI J1816-195. By stacking 73 bursts, we detected pulse profiles in 8-30 keV and 30-100 keV during bursts, which are identical to those obtained from the persistent (non-burst) emission. On average, no significant phase lag was observed between burst and persistent pulse profiles. In addition, we suggest that the interaction with burst photons can be used as a direct diagnostic to distinguish contributions from the hot plasma near polar caps and the corona around the accretion disk, which are highly degenerate in their spectral shapes., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to launch relativistic jets, which generate prompt emission by internal processes, and produce long-lasting afterglows by driving external shocks into surrounding medium. However, how the jet powers the external shock is poorly known. The unprecedented observations of the keV-MeV emission with GECAM and the TeV emission with LHAASO of the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A offer a great opportunity to study the prompt-to-afterglow transition and the impact of jet on the early dynamics of external shock. In this letter, we find that the cumulative light curve of keV-MeV emission could well fit the rising stage of the TeV light curve of GRB 221009A, with a time delay, $4.45^{+0.26}_{-0.26}$\,s, of TeV emission. Moreover, both the rapid increase in the initial stage and the excess from about \T+260\,s to 270\,s in the TeV light curve are tracking the light-curve bumps in the prompt keV-MeV emission. The close relation between the keV-MeV and TeV emission reveals the continuous energy-injection into the external shock. Assuming an energy-injection rate exactly following the keV-MeV flux of GRB 221009A, including the very early precursor, we build a continuous energy-injection model where the jet Lorentz factor is derived from the TeV time delay, and the TeV data is well fitted, with the TeV excesses interpreted by inverse Compton (IC) scatterings of the inner-coming prompt emission by the energetic electrons in external shock., Comment: ApJL accepted version; analytical derivation of SSC flux scaling with shock energy added

The inner fission barriers of the even-even uranium isotopes from the proton to the neutron drip line are studied with the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum. A periodic evolution for the ground state shapes is shown with the neutron number, i.e., spherical shapes at shell closures $N=$126, 184, 258, and prolate dominated shapes between them. In analogy to the shape evolution, the inner fission barriers also exhibit a periodic behavior: peaks at the shell closures and valleys in the mid-shells. The triaxial effect to the inner fission barrier is evaluated using the triaxial relativistic mean field calculations plus a simple BCS method for pairing. With the triaxial correction included, good consistency in the inner barrier heights is found with the available empirical data. Besides, the evolution from the proton to the neutron drip line is in accord with the results by the multi-dimensionally constrained relativistic mean field theory. A flat valley in the fission barrier height is predicted around the neutron-rich nucleus $^{318}$U which may play a role of fission recycling in the astrophysical $r$-process nucleosynthesis., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

MAXI J1816-195 is an accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) discovered in 2022. According to the Insight-HXMT data, the pulsations of this source extend all the way to over 100 keV, and its pulse profiles change from a single peak in low-energy range to double peaks in high-energy range. In this work, we simulate its energy spectra and pulse profiles with a Compton scattering Monte Carlo program. The simulation results suggest that the low energy X-ray source on the neutron star surface should be pencil-beamed radiations from the magnetic poles, and there should be a boundary layer in a hollow cylinder shape between the accretion disc and the neutron star surface: the up-scattering of the polar radiations in the boundary layer leads to the double peak structure of the high-energy pulse profile. Under this boundary layer geometry, we suggest that the rarity of AMXPs can be caused by the smearing of the boundary layer. To estimate the mass M and radius R of accretion-powered millisecond pulsars whose surface radiations are badly polluted by the accretion disk and boundary layer, the impact of Compton scattering in the boundary layer on the radiation should be removed before employing the X-ray pulse profile modeling method., Comment: 14 pages and 16 figures in total. Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) detectors are a competitive choice for current and upcoming astronomical missions. To understand the performance variations of CMOS detectors in space environment, we investigate the total ionizing dose effects on custom-made large-format X-ray CMOS detectors. Three CMOS detector samples were irradiated with a Co-60 source with a total dose of 70 krad and 105 krad. We test and compare the performance of these detectors before and after irradiation. After irradiation, the dark current increases by roughly 20 to 100 times, and the readout noise increases from 3 e- to 6 e-. The bias level at 50 ms integration time decreases by 13 to 18 Digital Number (DN) at -30 degree. The energy resolution increases from about 150 eV to about 170 eV at 4.5 keV at -30 degree. The conversion gain of the detectors varies for less than 2% after the irradiation. Furthermore, there are about 50 pixels whose bias at 50 ms has changed by more than 20 DN after the exposure to the radiation and about 30 to 140 pixels whose readout noise has increased by over 20 e- at -30 degree at 50 ms integration time. These results demonstrate that the performances of large-format CMOS detectors do not suffer significant degeneration in space environment., Comment: accepted by JATIS

We present the results obtained from an X-ray timing study of the new black hole candidate (BHC) Swift J1727.8-1613. The work is based on Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) observations carried out during the 2023 outburst. Prominent type-C low-frequency Quasi-periodic Oscillations (LFQPOs) are detected throughout the observations. With the substantial effective area of the Insight-HXMT at high energies, we examine the energy dependence of various parameters, including the centroid frequency, fractional rms, and phase lags of the type-C QPOs. Our findings align closely with those observed in high-inclination systems. During the initial stage of the outburst, a peaked noise component is also detected, the frequency of which is highly correlated with the LFQPO frequency, aligning with the Psaltis-Belloni-van der Klis (PBK) relation. By assuming that the peaked noise originates from the precession of the accretion disc, the spin of this source can be constrained. Our results suggest that this source may possess a high spin.

As the brightest gamma-ray burst ever observed, GRB 221009A provided a precious opportunity to explore spectral line features. In this paper, we performed a comprehensive spectroscopy analysis of GRB 221009A jointly with GECAM-C and Fermi/GBM data to search for emission and absorption lines. For the first time we investigated the line feature throughout this GRB including the most bright part where many instruments suffered problems, and identified prominent emission lines in multiple time intervals. The central energy of the Gaussian emission line evolves from about 37 MeV to 6 MeV, with a nearly constant ratio (about 10\%) between the line width and central energy. Particularly, we find that both the central energy and the energy flux of the emission line evolve with time as a power law decay with power law index of -1 and -2 respectively. We suggest that the observed emission lines most likely originate from the blue-shifted electron positron pair annihilation 511 keV line. We find that a standard high latitude emission scenario cannot fully interpret the observation, thus we propose that the emission line comes from some dense clumps with electron positron pairs traveling together with the jet. In this scenario, we can use the emission line to directly, for the first time, measure the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet ($\Gamma$) and reveal its time evolution (i.e. $\Gamma \sim t^{-1}$) during the prompt emission. Interestingly, we find that the flux of the annihilation line in the co-moving frame keeps constant. A approach for two-dimensional(2D) negative permeability in a $\Lambda$-type three-level atomic system interacting with a probe magnetic and the superposition of two orthogonal standing-wave fields is proposed. Through the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, two equally and tunable peak maxima of negative magnetic responses are observed in the x-y plane, and around the peak maxima region the negative permeability is isotropic. Left-handedness with three zero-absorption windows is achieved in a triple-quantum dot (TQD) system. With the typical parameters of a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure, the simultaneous negative relative electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are obtained by the adjustable incoherent pumping field and two inter-dot tunnelings. What's more, three zero-absorption windows in the left-handedness frequency bands are observed in the TQD system. The left-handedness with zero-absorption in solid state heterostructure may solve not only the challenge in the photonic resonant scheme for left-handed materials (LHMs) but also the application limitation of the negative refractive materials with large amount of absorption., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The Chasing All Transients Constellation Hunters (CATCH) space mission is an intelligent constellation consisting of 126 micro-satellites in three types (A, B, and C), designed for X-ray observation with the objective of studying the dynamic universe. Currently, we are actively developing the first Pathfinder (CATCH-1) for the CATCH mission, specifically for type-A satellites. CATCH-1 is equipped with Micro Pore Optics (MPO) and a 4-pixel Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) array. To assess its scientific performance, including the effective area of the optical system, on-orbit background, and telescope sensitivity, we employ the Monte Carlo software Geant4 for simulation in this study. The MPO optics exhibit an effective area of $41$ cm$^2$ at the focal spot for 1 keV X-rays, while the entire telescope system achieves an effective area of $29$ cm$^2$ at 1 keV when taking into account the SDD detector's detection efficiency. The primary contribution to the background is found to be from the Cosmic X-ray Background. Assuming a 625 km orbit with an inclination of $29^\circ$, the total background for CATCH-1 is estimated to be $8.13\times10^{-2}$ counts s$^{-1}$ in the energy range of 0.5--4 keV. Based on the background within the central detector and assuming a Crab-like source spectrum, the estimated ideal sensitivity could achieve $1.9\times10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ for an exposure of 10$^4$ s in the energy band of 0.5--4 keV. Furthermore, after simulating the background caused by low-energy charged particles near the geomagnetic equator, we have determined that there is no need to install a magnetic deflector.

In this paper, the sensing beam pattern gain under simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RIS)-enabled integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems is investigated, in which multiple targets and multiple users exist. However, multiple targets detection introduces new challenges, since the STAR-RIS cannot directly send sensing beams and detect targets, the dual-functional base station (DFBS) is required to analyze the echoes of the targets. While the echoes reflected by different targets through STAR-RIS come from the same direction for the DFBS, making it impossible to distinguish them. To address the issue, we first introduce the signature sequence (SS) modulation scheme to the ISAC system, and thus, the DFBS can detect different targets by the SS-modulated sensing beams. Next, via the joint beamforming design of DFBS and STAR-RIS, we develop a maxmin sensing beam pattern gain problem, and meanwhile, considering the communication quality requirements, the interference limitations of other targets and users, the passive nature constraint of STAR-RIS, and the total transmit power limitation. Then, to tackle the complex non-convex problem, we propose an alternating optimization method to divide it into two quadratic semidefinite program subproblems and decouple the coupled variables. Drawing on mathematical transformation, semidefinite programming, as well as semidefinite relaxation techniques, these two subproblems are iteratively sloved until convergence, and the ultimate solutions are obtained. Finally, simulation results are conducted to validate the benefits and efficiency of our proposed scheme.

We analyzed an observation with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array of the black-hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571 in the soft intermediate state, in which we detected a 2.5-ks long flare. Our spectral fitting results suggest that MAXI J1535-571 possesses a high spin of 0.97 (-0.10/+0.02) and a low inclination of approximately 24 deg. We observed a gradual increase in the inner disc radius, as determined from fits to the continuum spectrum. This trend is inconsistent with an increased flux ratio of the thermal component, as well as the source evolving towards the soft state. This inconsistency may be attributed to a gradual decrease of the color correction factor. Additionally, with a flare velocity of approximately 0.5 c and a higher hardness ratio during the flare period, the quasi-simultaneous detection of a type-B QPO in the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer data, and quasi-simultaneous ejecta launch through radio observations collectively provide strong evidence supporting the possibility that the flare originated from a discrete jet ejection., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables; accepted to be published in MNRAS

We conducted an analysis of 45 bursts observed from 4U 1636$-$53. To investigate the mechanism behind the light curve profiles and the impact of thermonuclear X-ray bursts on the accretion environment in accreting neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. This analysis employed both light curve and time-resolved spectroscopy methodologies, with data collected by the \textit{Insight}-HXMT instrument. We found that 30 bursts exhibited similar light curve profiles and were predominantly in the hard state, and two photospheric radius expansion (PRE) bursts were in the soft state. The light curves of most bursts did not follow a single exponential decay but displayed a dual-exponential behavior. The initial exponent had a duration of approximately 6 s. We utilized both the standard method and the `$f_{\rm a}$' method to fit the burst spectra. The majority of the `$f_{\rm a}$' values exceeded 1, indicating an enhancement of the persistent emission during the burst. Under the two comptonization components assumption, we suggest that the scattering of burst photons by the inner corona may mainly contribute to the persistent emission enhancement. We also observed an inverse correlation between the maximum $f_{\rm a}$ and the persistent emission flux in the non-PRE burst. This anti-correlation suggests that when the accretion rate is lower, there is a greater enhancement of persistent emission during the burst peak. Emergent collective modes in lattices give birth to many intriguing physical phenomena in condensed matter physics. Among these collective modes, large-area modes typically feature small-level spacings, while a mode with stable frequency tends to be spatially tightly confined. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a spectral-isolated photonic topological corner mode with a tunable mode area and stable frequency in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. This mode emerges from hybridizing the large-area homogeneous mode and in-gap topological corner modes. Remarkably, this large-area homogeneous mode possesses unique chirality and has a tunable mode area under the change of the mass term of the inner topological non-trivial lattice. We experimentally observe such topological large-area corner modes(TLCM) in a 2D photonic system and demonstrate the robustness by introducing disorders in the structure. Our findings have propelled the forefront of higher-order topology research, transitioning it from single-lattice systems to multi-lattice systems. The minimum variation timescale (MVT) and spectral lag of hundreds of X-ray bursts (XRBs) from soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) J1935+2154 were analyzed in detail for the first time in our recent work, which are important probes for studying the physical mechanism and radiation region. In this work, we investigate their differential and cumulative distributions carefully and find that they follow power-law models. Besides, the distributions of fluctuations in both parameters follow the Tsallis $q$-Gaussian distributions and the $q$ values are consistent for different scale intervals. Therefore, these results indicate that both parameters are scale-invariant, which provides new parameters for the study of self-organized criticality systems. Linear RMS-flux relation has been well established in different spectral states of all accreting systems. In this work, we study the evolution of the frequency-dependent RMS-flux relation of MAXI J1820+070 during the initial decaying phase of the 2018 outburst with Insight-HXMT over a broad energy range 1-150 keV. As the flux decreases, we first observe a linear RMS-flux relation at frequencies from 2 mHz to 10 Hz, while such a relation breaks at varying times for different energies, leading to a substantial reduction in the slope. Moreover, we find that the low-frequency variability exhibits the highest sensitivity to the break, which occurs prior to the hard-to-hard state transition time determined through time-averaged spectroscopy, and the time deviation increases with energy. The overall evolution of the RMS-flux slope and intercept suggests the presence of a two-component Comptonization system. One component is radially extended, explaining the strong disk-corona coupling before the break, while the other component extends vertically, contributing to the reduction of the disk-corona coupling after the break. A further vertical expansion of the latter component is required to accommodate the dynamic evolution observed in the RMS-flux slope. In conclusion, we suggest that the RMS-flux slope in 1-150 keV band can be employed as an indicator of the disk-corona coupling and the hard-to-hard state transition in MAXI J1820+070 could be partially driven by the changes in the corona geometry., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

We report timing and spectral studies of the high mass X-ray binary 4U 1700-37 using Insight-HXMT observations carried out in 2020 during its out-of-eclipse state. We found significant variations in flux on a time-scale of kilo-seconds, while the hardness (count rate ratio between 10-30 keV and 2-10 keV) remains relatively stable. No evident pulsations were found over a frequency range of $10^{-3}$-2000 Hz. During the spectral analysis, for the first time we took the configuration of different Insight-HXMT detectors' orientations into account, which allows us obtaining reliable results even if a stable contamination exists in the field-of-view. We found that the spectrum could be well described by some phenomenological models that commonly used in accreting pulsars (e.g., a power law with a high energy cutoff) in the energy range of 2-100 keV. We found hints of cyclotron absorption features around ~ 16 keV or/and ~ 50 keV., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The tidal disruption of a star around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) offers a unique opportunity to study accretion onto a SMBH on a human-timescale. We present results from our 1000+ days NICER, Swift and Chandra monitoring campaign of AT 2019avd, a nuclear transient with TDE-like properties. Our primary finding is that approximately 225 days following the peak of X-ray emission, there is a rapid drop in luminosity exceeding two orders of magnitude. This X-ray drop-off is accompanied by X-ray spectral hardening, followed by a 740-day plateau phase. During this phase, the spectral index decreases from 6.2+-1.1 to 2.3+-0.4, while the disk temperature remains constant. Additionally, we detect pronounced X-ray variability, with an average fractional root mean squared amplitude of 47%, manifesting over timescales of a few dozen minutes. We propose that this phenomenon may be attributed to intervening clumpy outflows. The overall properties of AT 2019avd suggest that the accretion disk evolves from a super-Eddington to a sub-Eddington luminosity state, possibly associated with a compact jet. This evolution follows a pattern in the hardness-intensity diagram similar to that observed in stellar-mass black holes, supporting the mass invariance of accretion-ejection processes around black holes., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJ
