Abstract

Light is a promising renewable energy source and can be converted into heat, electricity, and chemical energy. However, the efficiency of light‐energy conversion is largely hindered by limited light‐absorption coefficients and the low quantum yield of current‐generation materials. Photonic crystals (PCs) can adjust the propagation and distribution of photons because of their unique periodic structures, which offers a compelling platform for photon management. The periodicity of materials with an alternating refractive index can be used to manipulate the dispersion of photons to generate the photonic bandgap (PBG), in which light is reflected. The slow photon effect, i. e., photon propagation at a reduced group velocity near the edges of the PBG, is widely regarded as another valuable optical property for manipulating light. Furthermore, multiple light scattering can increase the optical path, which is a vital optical property for PCs. Recently, the light reflected by PBG, the slow photon effect, and multiple light scattering have been exploited to improve light utilization efficiency in photoelectrochemistry, materials chemistry, and biomedicine to enhance light‐energy conversion efficiency. In this review, the fabrication of opal or inverse opal PCs and the theory for improving the light utilization efficiency of photocatalysis, solar cells, and photoluminescence regulation are discussed. We envision photon management of opal or inverse opal PCs may provide a promising avenue for light‐assisted applications to improve light‐energy‐conversion efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Supramolecular H-Aggregates of Squaraines with Enhanced Type I Photosensitization for Combined Photodynamic and Photothermal Therapy

Abstract

Combined photodynamic and photothermal therapy (PDT and PTT) can achieve more superior therapeutic effects than the sole mode by maximizing the photon utilization, but there remains a significant challenge in the development of related single-molecule photosensitizers (PSs), particularly those with type I photosensitization. In this study, self-assembly of squaraine dyes (SQs) is shown to be a promising strategy for designing PSs for combined type I PDT and PTT, and a supramolecular PS (TPE-SQ7) has been successfully developed through subtle molecular design of an indolenine SQ, which can self-assemble into highly ordered H-aggregates in aqueous solution as well as nanoparticles (NPs). In contrast to the typical quenching effect of H-aggregates on reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, our results encouragingly manifest that H-aggregates can enhance type I ROS (•OH) generation by facilitating the intersystem crossing process while maintaining a high PTT performance. Consequently, TPE-SQ7 NPs with ordered H-aggregates not only exhibit superior combined therapeutic efficacy than the well-known PS (Ce6) under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions but also have excellent biosafety, making them have important application prospects in tumor phototherapy and antibacterial fields. This study not only proves that the supramolecular self-assembly of SQs is an effective strategy toward high-performance PSs for combined type I PDT and PTT but also provides a different understanding of the effect of H-aggregates on the PDT performance.

39. Shape memory photonic materials: fabrication and emerging applications.

Abstract

Shape memory photonic materials (SMPMs) are intelligent stimuli-responsive materials combining two different disciplines: shape memory polymers and photonic crystals. SMPMs can be programmed to one or more optically stable temporary configurations and recover to the initial configuration after being triggered by various external stimuli. In the shape memory cycle, the variation and fixation of structural colors are synchronized with the changes occurring in their micro/nanostructure of SMPMs. Because of the unique shape memory effect of micro/nanostructures, the variation of structural color can accurately convert the external stimuli into visualized optical signals in the shape memory cycles. Therefore, SMPMs have shown great potential in various applications, including actuators, visual sensors, anti-counterfeiting labels, and smart display units. This review summarizes shape memory mechanisms, micro/nanostructure design strategies, recent developments, and promising applications of SMPMs. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of SMPMs are discussed.
